My wealth. My priorities. My partner. You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help. The Private Bank uses a proprietary approach called the LIFE Wealth Cycle to find those gaps—and help you achieve what is important to you. SM

THE ICONIC AMPHITHEATER CELEBRATES A CENTURY OF MUSIC UNDER THE STARS. / BY LIBBY SLATE /
The summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl has been presenting alfresco concerts since 1922; its pre-concert picnicking is almost as renowned as its performances. No wonder the venue was named the Amphitheater of the Decade at the Pollstar Awards last year, adding to its 15 Outdoor Concert Venue of the Year awards. Here’s a look back at the Bowl’s beginnings and at its special place in the world of performing arts today. Cheers!
PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 13
THE MUSIC CENTER downtown had Dorothy Buffum Chandler as the driving force behind its creation in the 1960s. Four decades earlier, the Hollywood Bowl had Artie Mason Carter. Carter, a piano prodigy and music teacher originally from Missouri, may not be as well known as Chandler. But she had the same vision: establishing a permanent home for concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, then a fledgling orchestra, and the fundraising skills and tenacity to make it happen—in her case in an outdoor canyon then known as Daisy Dell. On July 7, 1922, after a 15-month campaign, the LA Phil played its first summer concert at the re-named Hollywood Bowl and—with the exception of the cancellation of

the 2020 season due to the pandemic—has performed there every year since. The Bowl celebrates its 100year history this summer with the eclectic mix of musical artists and styles it’s known for, beginning with an opening-night concert June 3 featuring LA Phil music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel and the orchestra, Gwen Stefani, ballet star Roberto Bolle, jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). “Thanks to the vision of Gustavo Dudamel and the collaboration of an astonishing roster of guest artists,” said LA Phil CEO Chad Smith at the season announcement, “our centennial season will celebrate the enduring spirit of the Hollywood Bowl and everything this magical place has
meant to generations of musicians and music lovers alike.” There are a number of programming nods this season to the Bowl’s history, according to Derek Traub, author of the coffee table book Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years. “We don’t hit you over the head with it, but there’s a meaningful connection that I think is going to make for a memorable and powerful summer,” he says. The book is available at the Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall gift shops and online. The July 17 performance of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” from Die Walküre, for instance, recalls a 1930s production—though this time, the ride will not include women on horseback carrying lit torches down the hillsides. /CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR When a young Latino theater composer by the name of LinManuel Miranda first burst onto the scene in 2008 with this groundbreaking show, it started a revolution. For the first time on the Broadway stage, audiences were able to experience a new, 21st century kind of theater. Where modern language and contemporary musical sounds were meshed together in a wholly original story and song cycle that included rap, hip-hop, salsa and Composer and lyricist, Lin-Manuel Miranda (left) with Director, Benjamin Perez (right). traditional Broadway ballads. A universal immigrant story that includes three generations, was highlighted with familiar characters, fresh orchestrations, and electrifying dance numbers. IN THE HEIGHTS was Lin’s first major work, and in my mind, it’s his emotional masterpiece. While he has gone on to great success and notoriety with his multi-award-winning phenomenon HAMILTON, (as well as family-favorites MOANA and ENCANTO) he admits that much of what he succeeded in doing in HAMILTON, he learned from writing IN THE HEIGHTS. This show has absolutely changed my life. It’s given me a nationwide Family of performers and friends. It’s expanded my understanding, knowledge, and respect for our hard-working people whose only hope is to live their American Dream. It’s breathed new life into the musical theater. It’s touched older people with its depiction of a generation that is seldom represented on the stage. It’s inspired young people and people of color to find their place in the Arts. It is a distinguished story of a Latin culture that doesn’t include gangs, drugs, guns, pregnancy, or prison. It has given me more joy and pride in the past 10 years than I can possibly express. I hope you embrace our Familia as your own. We are your grandparents and parents, your children and your friends, your neighbors, and the people you work with. We are a vibrant, loving community of American immigrants searching for a better life. We are figuring out what to bring with us from the old country, and what to embrace in this new century. Take the journey, feel the rhythm of our neighborhood, and let us into your heart. I promise you, it’s a ride worth taking. Benjamin Perez, Director

CENTURY MODERNISM
KAA Design continues Los Angeles’ rich tradition of residential modernism, an architectural style embedded in the city’s DNA. / by roger grody / THOUGH UNENLIGHTENED commentators might view Los Angeles as a city overwhelmed by nondescript housing tracts, the city has in fact inspired monumental achievements in residential design, notably its brilliant expressions of modernism. The architecture pioneered by Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler and John Lautner continues to evolve in L.A., and KAA Design is among the contemporary firms contributing to the movement’s momentum.

Founded in 1988 by architect Grant Kirkpatrick, KAA Design has attracted a clientele of A-list Hollywood celebrities, high-profile financiers and billionaire philanthropists. Much of the firm’s philosophy is documented in the founder’s 2018 book, California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick and KAA Design. “We really don’t have a consistent signature look, and we’re proud of that,” says KAA Design partner Duan Tran, explaining that all commissions reflect the respective personalities of their clients. Tran summarizing the firm’s

approach: “We specialize in lifestyledriven design that incorporates warm, organic materials within contemporary design sensibilities.” He emphasizes that the firm’s luxury residences are connected to the environment through materials that provide warmth and softness. The KAA partner believes that when modern residential architecture ignores natural conditions, the results can be austere boxes with plentiful attitude but minimal soul. By fully embracing natural elements, KAA’s work echoes the optimism expressed by the midcentury modern masters when
they discovered Southern California’s climate and views. “Our work conveys that same sense of optimism, a feeling that anything’s possible,” says Tran, pointing out that by pushing the envelope, both structurally and aesthetically, clients can live on the edge—sometimes literally. Perhaps no project better connects KAA’s work to the legacy of California modernism than a Hollywood Hills residence completed a decade ago. Spectacular city views are showcased in a cantilevered, glassensconced living and dining pavilion, a direct nod to Pierre Koenig’s

Case Study House #22 (aka Stahl House), the quintessential midcentury-modern masterpiece memorialized by photographer Julius Shulman. Its material palette is restrained, with little more than white plaster, steel, wood and generous expanses of glass necessary to pull off a look that is minimalist but not austere, at once modern and classic. A residence in the Hill Section of Manhattan Beach reflects KAA's sleek contemporary style. Its exterior concrete and glass are warmed by rough-hewn limestone and horizontal stained-cedar siding. has a graceful curvilinear steel-andwood staircase and a broad skylight; a ficus tree serves as much as sculpture as living flora. “This project is a great example of weaving indoor and outdoor spaces so that the house isn’t simply defined by its exterior walls,” Tran says. Its interior walls are clad in Anamosa limestone; two wings of the second level are connected by a glass-floored bridge that contributes to the drama of the design. Floor-toceiling glass panels retract to create seamless transitions from indoors to out, maximizing ocean views from the triple-lot site. Water features include a court-
yard koi pond and infinity-edge pool; lush tropical landscaping provides the illusion of an even larger parcel while ensuring privacy from neighboring properties. To accommodate demand for more traditional residential architecture, KAA Design Group has established Evens Architects. Led by partner Erik Evens, this division celebrates the Mediterranean architecture of Spain, Italy and France, and even Morocco, all of which have earned their place in L.A.’s diverse architectural fabric. Chef Jon Yao relocates his Michelin-lauded Kato to downtown’s Row DTLA. / jenn

Chef Jon Yao dreams of three Michelin stars. His original Kato in West Los Angeles garnered one Michelin star in 2019, just three years after it opened, and last year he received the Michelin Guide’s young chef award. But Yao has always set his sights for the top, and now, with Kato’s new location downtown, his three-star aspiration seems significantly more attainable. This year, Yao and Like Water Hospitality partners Nikki Reginald and Ryan Bailey transported Kato from its humble Sawtelle-adjacent strip mall space to the culinary playground Row DTLA. The new spot puts Kato in good company; neighbors include chef Brandon Go’s Michelin-lauded Hayato and

and a bar, not at the previous location. Yao, dressed in black, oversees each dish in the open kitchen. The tasting menu might start with a sea-urchin
donut with Iberico ham and browned butter, then a dish of Kaluga caviar, geoduck, squashini and koji served with warm, pillowy-soft milk bread.
A recent meal continued with a version of suan cai yu with fermented napa cabbage and Chinese mustard relish; its delicate Chinese mustard broth, a fumetlike tisane made with fish bones and michiu, was ladled tableside. Yao’s take on shun de yu sheng features slices of coal-seared sea bream wrapped around aromatic parcels of perilla and radish. The bundles are served with a Taiwanese “five flavor” sauce infused with perilla house-made chili oil. Kato’s tasting menu often reflects Yao’s

On July 27, a concert commemorating Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra pays tribute to the woman who headlined the firstever live television broadcast at the Bowl, The Colgate Comedy Hour, and the pop crooner whose first appearance was controversial because he wasn’t considered a “legitimate” artist by some. There’s also an uncanny, and meaningful, connection between Bowl founder Carter and Dudamel, says Traub, LA Phil’s manager of philanthropy communications. “You have these two people who passionately and profoundly believe that music can change everything—lives and families and communities—and that it’s this instrument of building democracy,” he notes. “And to see them sepa-
rated by 100 years and by two continents [Dudamel is from Venezuela], yet their words are almost identical, it was one of those things where you realize, ‘Oh, the DNA of who we are today started at the very beginning.’ “I’ve been a writer at the LA Phil for a decade— I’ve read every word that Gustavo has said for the last 10 years. To hear his beliefs coming out of the mouth of this woman who was born in Missouri in the 1880s was absolutely mind-blowing.” It took Traub a year to research the Hollywood Bowl book and another year to write it and participate in its editing. He and others went through hundreds of boxes of letters, programs, production notes and thousands of photographs in the LA Phil archives and in collections elsewhere; they selected Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years and, above, author Derek Traub

between 150 and 200 photos for publication. The book’s 10 thematic chapters consider various aspects of the Bowl such as the part it has played in politics. There are also interviews with Bowl patrons about why the venue is special to them. “We really wanted this book to feel different,” Traub says. “We wanted it to feel like a look into the Bowl’s unknown history. A lot of the stories in the book are passed down from generation to generation. We wanted to invite people in with that.” It’s not just audience members who love the Bowl; numerous artists come back time and again.
Joshua Bell, who performs the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Aug. 12 and 13, estimates he’s played there about 20 times since his debut in 1986. “It’s a special atmosphere for a classical venue. I love that it’s not just used for rock concerts, that it’s used for classical concerts and packs in 10,000 people or more to hear Beethoven or Tchaikovsky,” he says. “You get your music connoisseurs and you get your people who don’t go to classical concerts very often, but who are listening to classical music and enjoying the atmosphere. “It’s become a ritual of sorts for me—there are

never two days in a row in my life that are the same, so it’s nice that there’s some place that I enjoy almost yearly for 30 years. “It has so many memories for me,” Bell adds. Among them, he cites meeting one of his best friends, actor Matthew Labyorteaux, at a rehearsal for his debut, and, of course, his 2005 induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. “It was probably the most packed [Bowl audience] I’ve ever played for,” Bell recalls. “There was a blimp up in the sky, with [the three inductees’] names. That’s the only time you’ll see my name next to Frank Sinatra and Trisha Yearwood! “But I guess that sums up the Hollywood Bowl— it embraces all music. That was kind of cool.” Cool, indeed. Happy 100th, Hollywood Bowl!
