Joaquina Kalukango is in paradise
Are we living in a golden age for Broadway performers and creators? There do seem to be many great new shows written by a younger generation of playwrights and starring upand-coming talent who really shine. That would certainly include Joaquina Kalukango.
This powerhouse singer opens the Cabaret season on a strong note. Kalukango is being hailed as Broadway’s next great leading lady. In 2022 she won a Tony® Award for her leading role in the musical Paradise Square, a role she created: The director, Moisés Kaufman, hired her without an audition. Kalukango described her Paradise Square character as “a firecracker,” she told Town and Country magazine. “She’s able to see into people’s true hearts.”
“Kalukango [in Paradise Square] reminds us what a superb vocalist and musical actress she is,” says nystagereview.com. “Her rendering of
‘Let It Burn’ is a master class on how to stop a show cold … and stop the show she did, earning a sustained standing ovation.”
Kalukango was born in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a middle school teacher who recommended she attend a performing arts high school.
Kalukango thinks the teacher may have been joking after she had a self-described “terrible performance” in a school talent show. But Kalukango had the last laugh, as she went on to graduate from The Juilliard School and quickly found work, successfully acting on television and films as well as theater for the past decade and making her presence felt.
It’s theater that really energizes her, and Kalukango thrives on the collective energy of standing up in front of an audience. “Theater is like being in the playoffs every night,” she says. “It’s always changing based on who comes into the space. You never know what’s going to happen.”
After some understudy and off-Broadway work, Paradise Square really set her singing career in motion. She initially was part of an ensemble in the show, but as development of the work continued, Kalukango’s character rose to become the heroine, the one audiences would cheer for. She did not disappoint. The Chicago Tribune predicted her Tony win. “Kalukango will be formidable competition for anyone and everyone come Tony Awards time.”
With a cabaret engagement last year at New York’s Café Carlyle under her belt, Kalukango is expanding her fan base. She has a natural ability to connect with people, and that will certainly be demonstrated in Samueli Theater. This will be a phenomenal opening for the season.

Samara Joy: the new voice of jazz
In our 2022–23 season, jazz vocalist Samara Joy performed in Samueli Theater. This season she will be on stage in Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, and it will sell out.
Joy is only 24 years old, but don’t call her a newbie. At the 2023 Grammys, her second album won Best Jazz Vocal Album and she won Best New Artist, while in 2024 she won Best Jazz Performance. Her voice is rich and velvety, earning her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, who calls her “a young woman who seems like Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald are both living in her body.”
Joy had the jazz gene but she just didn’t know it. She was brought up surrounded by music. Her grandparents founded The Savettes, a well-known gospel choir, and her father was a vocalist and bass player who toured with gospel singer Andraé Crouch. Gospel was then her dominant influence.
Joy attended Fordham High School for the Arts, where she sang with the school’s jazz band and with them won Best Vocalist at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition. But it wasn’t until she enrolled in SUNY Purchase and declared as a voice major that she woke up to the real possibilities of jazz. Her new college friends introduced her to the great jazz vocalists and Joy was hooked.
“When I first encountered jazz, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how I feel at home,’” she told huffpost.com. “When you have a gift, you can’t run away from it. I had to practice and develop my own individual voice within the music. I loved the fact that I could just be myself and express myself… There’s nothing like that feeling.”
She went on to win the prestigious Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition at 19, before she graduated.
It’s only been a few years since Joy started recording and she has the jazz world in the palm of her hand. “She sheds new light on jazz classics alongside her deep understanding of the canon and the singers before her,” says
artsinmichigan.com. The New York Times calls her a “silky-voiced rising star … helping jazz take a youthful turn,” and NPR says Joy’s “a classic jazz singer from a new generation.”
“There was so much to enjoy in her London show,” says londonjazznews.com. “The capturing of the moods of different songs, and her refreshing way with jazz standards, her ease as a performer. She absolutely packed out the Jazz Cafe last night.”
As a Gen Z’er, Joy is posting on social media and garnering new fans. “That’s where my generation is,” she told NPR. “I posted a couple of videos on TikTok, and a month later, 100,000 people. People say, ‘I found you on TikTok, and I just had to come see a show.’ Anything to share the music—and then, if people my age are attracted to it and they want to know more about it, that’s cool.”
As Joy tours and fills even larger venues she says it’s incredible to see the thousands of people who come to hear her. “I’m still very much a student,” says Joy. “This is only the beginning. There is much, much more to come.”
We look forward to that.

Tony Kushner: wordsmith extraordinaire
What was the play where an angel with gigantic wings crashes through a ceiling? That was Angels in America, Tony Kushner’s famous and award-winning two-part theater epic. But that is only a fraction of what his career has included.
Kushner will be the first guest on the 2024–25 In Conversation series to talk about his groundbreaking work and issues in the news today. Kushner will be interviewed by Frank Rich, a writer at large with New York magazine covering politics and culture. Before joining New York, Rich had a distinguished career with The New York Times.
Angels in America is an epic telling of the AIDS epidemic as it played out in 1980s Reaganera New York. The plays received praise for its dialogue and exploration of social issues. “Mr. Kushner has written the most thrilling American play in years,” wrote The New York Times. A decade after the play’s premiere, Metro Weekly labeled it “one of the most important pieces of theater to come out of the late 20th century.”
Angels in America received numerous awards, including the 1993 and 1994 Tony Awards for Best Play. The play’s first part, Millennium Approaches, received the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Kushner has gone on to have a successful screenplay career, especially collaborating with Steven Spielberg on a number of films, including Munich, Lincoln, West Side Story, and The Fabelmans. He worked with Mike Nichols, writing the screenplay for Angels in America as a miniseries for HBO. He’s written a musical— Caroline, or Change—plays and books on difficult or political (or both) subjects, and won prestigious awards, including a National Medal
of Arts from President Barack Obama. Kushner is open about his politics: His six-word memoir is “At least I never voted Republican.”
Frank Rich has had a varied and successful career. In addition to his journalism, he has been a creative consultant for HBO for 15 years. He was executive producer of the hit drama Succession and the long-running comedy Veep, as well as a limited series about the Watergate scandal. He won Emmys for both Succession and Veep and was twice a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. During his long career at The New York Times, he was an op-ed writer from 1994–2011, and chief drama critic from 1980–1993, crossing over with Angels in America. For his career as a drama critic Rich was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2015.
Rich pulls no punches in his own opinions. He wrote The Greatest Story Ever Sold: The Decline and Fall of Truth from 9/11 to Katrina. After the word “truthiness” was coined by Stephen Colbert, Rich took it up and uses it frequently when writing about problems in culture and politics.
Kushner and Rich together will be an exciting evening of fascinating, opinionated dialogue.

Helloooooo, Mrs. Doubtfire has arrived
What would you do, in a difficult family situation, to be with your children when you’ve been kicked out of the house? Would you put on a body suit, a full-face mask, grey wig, the ugliest brown shoes you’ve ever seen, and pretend to be a Scottish nanny?
Her name is Mrs. Doubtfire and she brings her no-nonsense voice to the Center in September.
Mrs. Doubtfire: The New Musical Comedy is based on the 1993 film with Robin Williams, which in turn was based on a 1987 YA novel by Anne Fine about a family dealing with a messy divorce. Dad Daniel is a struggling out-of-work actor whose alter ego is Peter Pan: he doesn’t want to grow up. After losing custody of his three children in his own messy divorce, he creates the kindly character of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives.
As his new character takes on a life of its own,
Daniel finds himself in some tricky situations as he tries to keep the real identity of the nanny a secret. But ultimately Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel about how to be a father.
“I guarantee you haven’t had this much fun at the theater in a long time,” says MDtheareguide. com. “The entire cast, ensemble and creative team shine in this production.” The Chicago Tribune says, “This loveable, big-hearted musical comedy delivers.”
The star is Rob McClure, who originated the role on Broadway and now takes it on tour. “McClure is a great performer who proves a wide-ranging mimic,” says the Chicago SunTimes. “He gets the heart of the story’s arc just right.” Of course, he will be compared to Robin Williams’ film performance. McClure’s “performance is worth the price of admission alone,” says MDtheaterguide.com. “He does Robin Williams proud but makes his own mark as the character.”
But Daniel is not simply in want of some lessons in maturity. The audience will understand his need to be with his children, and the young members of his family want opportunities to grow a better relationship with Dad. “The best thing about Mrs. Doubtfire is that it restores the heartfelt message of the original book—that divorce doesn’t have to be an end for a family, but can simply be a new chapter,” says Newcitystage.com. There is no such thing as a perfect family, but love and laughter will see them through difficult times.
In all, “This production is reminiscent of the old-time Broadway musical comedies, full of big laughs and big numbers,” says MDtherareguide. com. “For an evening of pure entertainment and laughter, don’t miss Mrs. Doubtfire.”

Jane Yada’s Center legacy
Jane Fujishige Yada is very modest about her three years as chairwoman of the Center’s board of directors.
“This has been such an amazing tenure,” she says. “But I didn’t do it by myself. Everyone at the Center, from my fellow board members to theater operations personnel, and our wonderful ushers and volunteers, has played important roles in keeping the Center at the top of its game.”
Yada became chairwoman in 2021 while the Center was still closed due the pandemic. It was a tense time when no one was sure what it meant for the future of indoor performances, but Yada led the Center’s efforts to safely reopen for indoor performances while keeping audiences, performers and staff safe.
“Even after we reopened, we faced show cancellations and a large number of patrons who were not quite ready to return,” she says. “But 2023–24 has been a breakthrough season. Broadway shows have been selling out, tickets sales across the board are great, and patrons are glad to be able to attend performances comfortably again.”
Yada is thrilled that the demand for programs from the Education department has grown post pandemic. One such program is Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS), an education initiative that develops sustainable theater programs in four Orange County Title I public elementary schools each year. Yada was delighted that Stoddard Elementary School in Anaheim, which she once attended, had been awarded the program in 2023.
There is a roster of 30-minute Disney KIDS
Musicals schools can choose from. Stoddard picked The Lion King KIDS as its production and Yada, along with some members of the Center’s education team, was invited to watch a rehearsal at the school one afternoon. The children were excited to have a special audience, and proud that a former pupil of their school was there. “The children had worked hard making costumes and scenery, and they really got into the acting too!” says Yada. “The character of Scar was pretty fierce, even if he was being performed by a 3rd grader. All the kids were so enthusiastic. It’s remarkable that Center programs like this can make such a difference to the confidence and communication skills of these young people.”
She takes pride in having helped strengthen the long-time Center partnership with American Ballet Theatre, one of the world’s leading ballet companies and America’s National Ballet Company. Highlights in the past two years include the North American premieres of Like Water for Chocolate last season and Woolf Works this season.
Yada is also proud of two dance productions that occurred before most international dance companies were ready to travel. Working with Elizabeth Segerstrom and the Henry and Elizabeth Segerstrom Foundation, in 2022 the

Center hosted a unique dance event, Reunited in Dance, which brought together some of the best dancers in the world who had been displaced by the war in Ukraine.
These artists of multiple nationalities had been dancing in Russia and Ukraine and had to leave quickly. Those who were in other countries when war broke out knew they could not return. But they wanted to keep dancing and show that their spirit would not be broken by politics. The one-night-only evening of mixed repertory was a showcase of exceptional talent never before seen on stage together.
The following year the United Ukrainian Ballet brought a production of the classic Giselle to the Center. Yada was delighted that this large, full-length story ballet sold out four performances and that the inspiring story behind the making of the ballet led to a documentary produced by actress Sarah Jessica Parker. The Kennedy Center and Segerstrom Center for the Arts were both featured in the film.
Closer to home, the Center has been mindful of its artistic partners, Pacific Symphony, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, and Pacific Chorale. “Our partners are very important, and we work closely together on scheduling and special events,” says Yada. “I’m glad we strengthened the already strong relationships and put in place postpandemic assistance to ensure they were able to rebuild their audiences and remain solvent.”
What does one do after leaving such an exciting and fulfilling term? Yada is a keen fan of her hometown Angels baseball team and the Ducks hockey team, and loves attending games. And, of course, she will still serve on the Center’s board, continuing to help guide this institution through many more years of bringing joy to performing arts lovers and the wider community.
“It was such an honor to be elected to this position,” says Yada. “The past few years have been unprecedented, but the Center has navigated the ride and come out the other side better than ever.”
Following Yada in the chairman’s seat will be John Phelan, currently the chair of the board development committee. Phelan joined the board in 2018 and has been active in board development, planning and finance at the Center. It goes without saying that he loves the arts—he and his wife, Sherry, enjoy Broadway and dance performances.
“It is a tribute to Jane’s work as board chairwoman that the Center has returned to full capacity performances and is in the best shape it has been in many years. I plan to build on that success and foundation laid by Jane for continued excellence at the Center,” says Phelan. “It’s is such an important part of our community, and we will continue strive to be an arts home for everyone in Orange County.”

It’s not a rumor: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is live at the Center
Remember when you used to put an album on the record player and listen to it start to finish?
Classic Albums Live wants to take you back to those days. It recreates the legendary albums of the ‘60s and ‘70s live on stage, note for note and cut for cut. It sounds just like the real band.
Now, it brings Rumours by Fleetwood Mac to Segerstrom Hall. The multi-Grammy-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inductee band is one of rock’s most enduring, iconic bands with one of the most successful albums in rock ‘n’ roll history.
Classic Albums Live was founded in 2003 by Craig Martin and has become the ultimate destination for music lovers wanting to hear the greatest albums performed live, including The Beatles, David Bowie, U2, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.
Rumours is layered and full of nuance and can be a tricky album to recreate, with hits such as “Don’t Stop,” “Go Your Own Way,” “The Chain,” and “You Make Loving Fun.” These gigs use some of the best musicians in the business, enabling the audience to feel as if they are actually at a Fleetwood Mac concert.
“All our energy is put into the music,” says Martin. “We want the performance to sound exactly like the album.” Dispensing with costumes and impersonations (no funky moustaches or fringed waistcoats), Classic Albums Live concentrates solely on the music. “These albums are historic and stand the test of time. We create something that endures and connects.” For instance, even parts such as George Harrison’s sitar playing in the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” are not overlooked. Musicians will either learn a new instrument or Martin will get a performance request from a musician who already plays that instrument. Rumours was released in 1977. It has
frequently been called one of the greatest albums of all time and was certainly the best of the Fleetwood Mac albums. Rumours sold over 40 million copies worldwide. It won Album of the Year at the 1978 Grammys and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.
Over the years since its release, the album has only garnered more popularity and recognition for its astonishing music. In 1999, Vibe featured it as one of 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century. In 2001, VH1 ranked the record at number 16 during its 100 Greatest Albums countdown. Rolling Stone ranked it at number 25 in its special issue of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
“I sell nostalgia,” says Martin. “Music takes us back to the prime of our lives and, for a lot of us, those memories can be pretty golden.”
Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow, it will soon be here, so buy your tickets now.

Funny for the whole family
Brian Regan went to college with the intention of becoming an accountant. He also was on the football team, and it was a coach who noticed how funny he was and suggested a theatrical direction for his future.
Good call, coach! Regan has distinguished himself as one of the premiere comedians in the country. But don’t expect any “locker room humor.” He is also known for refraining from profanity and taboo subjects. He finds a balance of sophisticated writing and his hilarious physicality, creating a fan base that spans generations.
His break came when he was invited onto The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1991 and he’s never looked back. He was a guest on Jerry Seinfeld’s web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, who describes Regan as “one of my favorite, favorite stand-up comedians.”
Entertainment Weekly calls him, “Your favorite comedian’s favorite comedian” while Vanity Fair calls Regan, “The funniest stand-up alive.” Having built his 30-plus year career on the strength of his material alone, Regan’s nonstop theater tour continues to delight audiences everywhere.
Between eight hour-long specials, multiple landmark tours, and history-making stand-up moments, Regan is a true performer whose material appeals to a wide audience. His quick one-liners and everyday observations make his act a great comedic experience and one you won’t want to miss!
After all, who else could find the humor in trying to mail a package at a UPS store?

Complexions Contemporary Ballet celebrates the big 3-0
Roll out the cake and blow up the balloons! Complexions Contemporary Ballet is celebrating its 30th birthday. The company is popular with Center dance fans. In a review of its performance here last year, LA Dance Chronicle wrote, “The Segerstrom Center was near capacity and the audience loved every minute of this concert.”
For its Center engagement in September, the company brings a new work: For Crying Out Loud. It is choreographed by Dwight Rhoden, who, with Desmond Richardson, founded the company in 1994. Rhoden turned to a new U2 album for music and inspiration. During the pandemic, the band reworked many of their songs, recording them using acoustical instruments and stripping them right down to the bone. The result was a new album: Songs
of Surrender. Rhoden uses this recording of the band’s iconic songs for a performance that is both moving and uplifting.
“The piece overall is undeniably a fine example of Rhoden’s choreographic style,” says crticaldance.com, “which skillfully exploits and enlarges the scope of his dancers’ abilities, [which are] of the highest artistic and physical caliber.”
“Let it be said that this company of dancers is highly trained, well-rehearsed, and extremely capable in terms of the physical demands of classical ballet coupled with the techniques of modern dance,” says LA Dance Chronicle. “They are precise and deliberate in their movement and clean in their execution.”
Both Rhoden and Richardson were dancers with Alvin Ailey American Dance, and Rhoden has created more than 90 dance pieces for Complexions. The company has appeared in major dance festivals all over the world and numerous awards, including The New York Times’ Critics Choice Award. In addition to Songs of Surrender the company will dance a selection of short works.
With these dancers and music by U2, this one-night-only engagement will sell out quickly. Don’t miss this extraordinary dance event.

We are pleased to support South Coast Repertory in our beautiful home of San Juan Capistrano at the historic Mission. At St. Margaret’s we believe in the transforming power of the arts and that everyone is on an artistic journey. Through experiences in the visual arts, music, dance, theater and technical arts, St. Margaret’s students of all ages discover personal interests and the fundamentals of art forms, cultivate their talents and valuable life skills of communication, creativity, empathy, persistence, vision and voice, and nurture the artists within.
