Tiler Peck brings the ballet bravura
WHEN YOU ARE PROMOTED at the age of 20 to principal dancer with a major American ballet company, you must be doing something right. We’re talking about Tiler Peck, who has been a principal dancer with New York City Ballet for 12 years. In addition to dancing, she has expanded her reach in the dance world to put together an evening of four works that demonstrate the span and caliber of her talent as well as that of some of her dance friends. Turn It Out with Tiler Peck makes its West Coast premiere at the Center next month. Peck curated the program and dances in three of the four pieces—she choreographed the fourth. Criticaldance.org calls the show “sheer physical
brilliance... These dancers are loving their art and their pleasure is infectious.” The opening work is Thousandth Orange, danced to a piece of the same name by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw: The music is performed by a piano quartet live on stage. It was choreographed by Tiler while she was struggling with a serious neck injury that limited her movement and nearly ended her career. In spite of that, she created a beautiful piece with six dancers elegantly weaving between solos, duets and ensembles. Peck knows how to make her fellow dancers look good, and clearly has a stellar choreographic career ahead of her when she retires from dancing. Peck had long wanted to work with Alonzo King, founder of LINES Ballet, and he responded immediately when she contacted him. King created Swift Arrow, a pas de deux for Peck and fellow NYCB dancer Roman Mejia to music by jazz composer Jason Moran. Inspired by a Hindu

In this program Peck shows her love for her fellow dancers as they, in turn, lean into the beauty of dance and make every move look natural. It’s clear that everyone on the stage is having a blast and the feeling is infectious. The premiere in New York was sold out, and it will certainly do the same here. philosophy, the dancers seem to merge into oneness. Can you tap dance en pointe? You can if you are Tiler. In Time Spell, she is joined by star tap dancer Michelle Dorrance—who danced at the Center with her company last season— and choreographer Jillian Myers. FT.com calls it a “ballet-tap-modern marathon” as dancers both en pointe and taps share the stage. Peck hopped on a miked tap floor with Dorrance, “her pointe shoes beating out a furious Kitri-style taconeo, a classical counterpoint to the demon hoofer by her side.” In the rehearsal room, the ballet barre is the indispensable piece of equipment all dancers use for class. In Barre Project: Blake Works II, the barre is the star as four dancers use it in quick-moving sequences. It was choreographed by William Forsythe as he and Peck worked together over Zoom from opposite ends of the country during the pandemic lockdown. Thestage.co.uk calls it “increasingly explosive movement… keeping a scalpel-like sharpness and demonstrating an almost hypnotic prowess,” while theartsdesk.com describes it as “classical technique pushed to challenging extremes of speed… The precision detail with which [Peck] packs the realms of super-fast steps is a joy.”

Mandy Patinkin doing what he loves best
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE who have only seen Mandy Patinkin on television, starring in such hits as Homeland, Chicago Hope, and The Good Fight, or in iconic films such as The Princess Bride. In fact, Patinkin also is a Tony winner and Broadway legend. This guy can belt out a song! You can experience it for yourself when he comes to the Center in November with Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Being Alive. He will be accompanied by Adam Ben-David on the piano. Being Alive is a collection of many of Patinkin’s favorite Broadway and American Songbook hits, from Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter to Harry Chapin, with a few unexpected surprises in the mix. It’s a dazzling musical journey that will have the audience enthralled. Patinkin loves performing concerts. “It’s my absolute favorite thing to do of all the things I’m privileged to get to do, because of the immediacy” he told Broadwayworld.com. “We are doing it for the audience, not ourselves but for others. We come alive. The concert world has what the film and television do not have… which is the immediacy of the audience.” Patinkin grew up singing in choirs and high school musicals. But when he went to college,
he became involved with acting in plays, which led to acceptance into the famed Juilliard School. He continued to act in plays and says none of his classmates—who included Robin Williams, William Hurt and Kelsey Grammer—knew he could sing. After graduation he performed in some stage productions, working alongside Meryl Streep, John Lithgow, and Sam Waterston. Then, in 1979, Andrew Lloyd Webber cast him in Evita, with Patti LuPone. It shot Patinkin to stardom, earning him a Tony Award. He soon received another Tony nomination for his role in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. The subsequent decades have seen him in front of audiences in a range of entertainment mediums—plays, musicals, movies, television and concerts. Patinkin was raised in Conservative Judaism, so it’s natural that he can sing in Yiddish. He is proud of his heritage and includes that in his concerts, singing some classic American songs that he has translated into Yiddish, such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “Hokey Pokey.” He also takes on surprising songs (not in Yiddish) like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” not usually seen on play lists today! He’s an entertainer that crosses generations in popularity. Patinkin “fills the stage with his presence …” says Broadwayworld.com. “There’s a sense that the audience is simply spending an evening with a friend and each number is more of a whim than a carefully selected and rehearsed piece.” Patinkin told The Guardian (UK) that he hates disappointing anyone, including his audiences. There’s not much chance of that. It’s inconceivable that you won’t have the time of your life. Get your tickets now. RENÉE AND HENRY SEGERSTROM CONCERT HALL November 2 | Tickets start at $39

Amor Towles follows his passion
WHAT DO YOU DO when you’ve written a bestselling book that’s flying off the shelves? Amor Towles—who took a leap of faith when he wrote Rules of Civility 12 years ago—will be at Segerstrom Center November 6 as part of the In Conversation Series. He’ll discuss his surprise success and the inspirations for his three books. Towles grew up in Boston and earned degrees at Yale and Stanford universities. As a child he started writing stories almost as soon as he learned how to write. While at Yale, he met Peter Matthiessen, co-founder of the prestigious Paris Review magazine, who became a mentor to him. But when Towles decided on graduation to take a job at an investment firm, Matthiessen threw his hands up, telling the young man he would never write a book if he took that path. For many years, it looked as if Matthiessen was right. Towles did well in finance, but still dreamed of a writing career. He tried to write a book alongside his day job but tossed it aside as unreadable. He tried again and this time was successful. The result was Rules of Civility, which came out in 2011 and quickly became a best seller. Towles quit his day job.
The first book was followed by A Gentleman in Moscow, which spent more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list. His most recent book, The Lincoln Highway, was chosen as Amazon’s Best Book of the year for 2021. In all, Towles’ books have sold more than 5 million copies. NPR calls his writing “elegantly constructed and compulsively readable.” Of Lincoln Highway, it says, “Hitch onto this delightful tour de force and you’ll be pulled straight to the end, helpless against the inventive exuberance of Towles’ storytelling.” “The characters Amor Towles creates… are so vivid, so specific, and so downright enjoyable to spend time with that I would have sworn they were based on real people,” wrote the Santa Barbara Independent. But no, they are all created in Towles’ imagination. “I always start with a very simple idea, a conceit that has popped into my head and which can be described in a sentence’” he says. “In the years that follow, I’ll keep returning to the idea, picturing the characters, the settings, the events, eventually filling a few notebooks while slowly gaining an understanding of the story as a whole,” he told Literary-Arts.org. He uses that to make a detailed outline of the story, then gives himself a year to write the first draft. “That’s when the people come to life.” Towles says his novels are firmly rooted in character rather than detailed historic research. Nevertheless, anyone who has read his books can see that he has done the groundwork. No matter when or where he sets his books, readers know that Towles will take them into worlds they probably never imagined. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the author himself about how he grabs these ideas and makes them best sellers. RENÉE AND HENRY SEGERSTROM CONCERT HALL November 6 | Tickets start at $49

THÉOTIME LANGLOIS DE SWARTE is not your ordinary Baroque violin player. Look at one of his videos on Youtube. Standing in a bare room with cement walls, he plays Vivaldi’s lively Violin Concerto in B minor on his Jacob Stainer 1665 violin. A man who looks like a boxer and dances like Nureyev leaps and swirls around him, sometimes in a menacing manner as Langlois de Swarte plays. It’s mesmerizing. So is the dancing. A reviewer at Gramaphone says, “Théotime Langlois de Swarte reminds me why I fell in love with the Baroque violin… His playing is joyful; it is wild and beautiful, inventive and efficient.” Langlois de Swarte and Le Consort are the second offering on the Chamber Series calendar. Théotime (pronounced Tay-o-T-ym) is something of a rare thing in music: He loves the compelling musical personalities in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. As a leading Baroque chamber ensemble co-directed by harpsichordist Justin Taylor, Le Consort comprises four young musicians who interpret Baroque repertoire with enthusiasm, sincerity, and modernity. While they play recognized names like Vivaldi, Bach and Rameau, they also seek out lesser-known composers including John Eccles and Giovanni Battista Reali. You might expect this from a seasoned musician, but Langlois de Swarte was only 20 years old when he formed the ensemble. Langlois de Swarte began violin lessons at the age of four and by the age of nine began learning Baroque violin alongside his modern studies. He entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 17, still focusing on the modern, but he couldn’t ignore the pull of Baroque. A year later he won a place in Les Arts Florissants, a renowned Baroque music ensemble founded by conductor William Christie. Although it

A journey through Baroque Europe might not have been the best fit for him, the experience confirmed for Langlois de Swarte that his heart was firmly with Baroque works. “I realized I wanted to find forgotten composers and express myself through their music as if it were mine, composed yesterday,” he told The Strad. (He is still close friends with Christie.) He wasted no time in pursuing this dream. Not long after Le Consort was founded, representatives from the prestigious recording company Harmonia Mundi attended one of his concerts and soon offered him a contract. Langlois de Swarte was thrilled when they agreed to release recordings of music that included some of his favorite—but primarily unknown—composers. It could have been a risk, but the company’s faith was rewarded and Langlois de Swarte’s recordings have sold well. He has just released his fifth recording—a CD with concertos by Vivaldi, Leclair and Locatelli. Langlois de Swarte is only 27 and the future holds many options for him, including this, Le Consort’s current first North American Tour. He is interested in conducting. And, he told The Strad, he continues his search to “find music that hasn’t been heard. There is so much music, even by Vivaldi, that has remained buried in libraries.” That will remain for another concert. With a dozen pieces planned for his Center debut in November, there is more than enough for Langlois de Swarte and Le Consort to show you why Francesco Maria Veracini might become your new favorite composer. Your legacy at the Center SEGERSTROM CENTER INVITES YOU to help ensure we can continue our mission of quality artistic programming and education programs. Does that sound like a big job? Not if we all join in. Just listen to Carol and Kent Wilken, long-time supporters and Legacy Society members. “One of the best things the Center’s founders did was to encourage the endowment,” says Kent. “Planned giving is an important part of that.” The Wilkens have been contributors to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts since its beginning in 1983, when the foundation was being laid and it was called Orange County Performing Arts Center. “In the ’80s I became a member of The Guilds of the Center, which was created to help raise funds for building a performing arts center,” says Carol. “A remarkable woman, Elaine Redfield, wrote a letter to Henry Segerstrom and asked, ‘Your land would be the perfect spot to build a performing arts center. Would you donate it?’ Mr. Segerstrom returned her letter with an answer of yes in less than a week. “Opening day in 1986 was spectacular,” Carol continues. “One of the things I remember was Henry Segerstrom on the stage saying that the facility was paid for. And it was, because of all the generosity and excitement that had been generated in the three years it took to build the Center. That is part of our family’s legacy.”
One of the programs the Wilkens have supported for 30 years is Summer at the Center, a two-week musical theater camp held on the Center campus. This is one of the most important programs we do and has been helping high risk high school-level youth for more than three decades. It’s an intensive experience during which the teens learn to build critical life skills in specially designed music and theater workshops. The students may come from difficult backgrounds, but they discover how to overcome adversity in their lives, build self-esteem, develop social skills and become peer role models, putting them on a better path to a more positive future. “It’s so heartwarming to see these kids at the conclusion of the program,” says Kent. “The teens present a performance for family, friends and the public, and they exude happiness and confidence. The Center has taught them that, and the endowment has helped make it possible.” Every visit to the Center shows the necessity of planned giving to support the arts for generations. “Everywhere you look on the Center campus there is art and activity, children and music and lively entertainment,” says Carol. “It has just blossomed and grown, and I think a lot of people understand why it’s necessary,” says Kent. “We want to keep moving forward. It’s going to get bigger and better for generations to come.” A planned gift to the Center can help achieve your philanthropic and personal goals for you and your loved ones, as well as provide greater financial flexibility and significant tax benefits. There are many ways to include the Center in your estate plans that can be created at any time. The Legacy Society honors individuals who have made a commitment to contribute a planned gift to the Center or have made an outright gift to the Center’s endowment fund. For more information regarding Legacy Society or free estate planning resources please contact Elizabeth Kurila, senior director, gift planning strategies (714) 942-6275 EKurila@scfta.org, or visit our website at scfta.giftlegacy.com.

Nutcracker camp: no experience required YOU’VE HEARD OF summer camp, but here at the Center we have Nutcracker Camp! The Center’s ABT Gillespie School will host two camps on Saturday, December 9 and Saturday December 16 for children ages 3–7. You don’t need to be a dance student, just a fan of this celebrated holiday classic. This is an opportunity to experience the magic of this ballet in a fun, interactive way. Campers will have a dance class with live musical accompaniment and learn a piece of choreography from the ballet as well as enjoy Nutcracker-themed arts and crafts and a story time. A visit from pre-professional dancers studying at our school will perform excerpts from The Nutcracker in full costume, and campers can have their photo taken with them.
The Nutcracker Camps will take place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. There will be matinee performances of American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker on both days, so consider booking tickets to enjoy all the adventures of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince. There will be discounts available for campers and their family and friends. Each camp is limited to 20 campers, so make your reservation now.

You get a free pass SEGERSTROM CENTER for the Arts has launched a new way to make attending free events on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza even easier. We have created Plaza Pass, a resource accessible on your phone for easy entrance to Plaza events instead of having to check in on our website for every occasion. Think of it like a gym pass or library card. The Plaza Pass is free—a registration form can be found on the Center’s website and there is an option to sign up at online event listings. You only sign up once and you no longer need to RSVP, just show up, show your pass, and you’re in. No more having to commit in advance to attending a free event; you can be spontaneous when life gets busy. It will help speed guests though the event entry process, so no one will have to wait in long lines. The Plaza Pass will live in your phone wallet and will have a unique barcode assigned to you. (Paid events will still use digital tickets.) It is for patrons over 18 years old; youth under 18 can accompany a pass holder and there is an option to sign up in person during select Plaza events.
The pass will also help us tailor plaza programming to ensure we are reaching all our potential audiences. Patrons will have opportunities to share with us what they enjoy and what they’d like to see presented in the future. Using that information, the Center will be able to introduce new events and music that reflects our diverse audience. Some things will stay the same: Attendance will be first come, first admitted, and bag checks will continue. The Center is making it as easy as possible for you to enjoy all the exciting free programming we have for you. We look forward to seeing you and introducing this new enhancement to your Center experience.

MISSION CASA provides a powerful voice and a meaningful connection for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are trained, dedicated, ordinary citizens with
extraordinary hearts.
BE A VOICE OF HOPE You are not a foster parent or caretaker, you are a powerful voice making a real difference at a critical turning point in a child's life. As a volunteer, you can make all the difference for a child in the Orange County foster care system. CASA volunteers advocate for children, developing a relationship with them through outings, quality time, and most importantly, listening.
This commitment enables our advocates to interact with all professionals involved in the child’s case and make recommendations directly to the court, ensuring the child’s best interests are heard.

Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation
WE LOVE BROADWAY, but we also love Broadway when it’s skewered by Forbidden Broadway, the show that spoofs beloved musicals and more. The New York Post calls the show “Gut-bustingly funny!” The newest incarnation is Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation, coming to Samueli Theater November 16-18. Creator Gerard Alessandrini is back with “the best edition of Forbidden Broadway,” says The New York Times. Newyorktheatreguide.com says, “The current iteration brilliantly keeps the laughter flowing. It’s a delight from start to finish. Alessandrini has an incredible gift for finding the funny.” What began 40 years ago as a way for him to showcase his acting talents has become a comedy juggernaut. Get ready for an all-new line-up of Broadway shows ripe for humor. There are so many! Frozen;
Hamilton; Dear Evan Hansen; Moulin Rouge; Come from Away; Wicked... more than 30 shows are featured. Even Lin Manuel Miranda himself gets the treatment. “Forbidden Broadway is a godsend, and this is a strong edition,” says talkinbroadway.com. Taking a swipe at the musical Tootsie, the main character is played here by 16-year-old Joshua Turchin in a red sequined gown. His rendition of “Toot-Toot-Tootsie,” a 1922 gem originally sung by Al Jolson, is a brilliant and unexpected nod. Turchin, who is a multi-talented performer (singer, actor, dancer, writer, musician and more) also takes on Dear Evan Hansen. The new production of Oklahoma! also comes in for lampooning as “Woke-lahoma.” There’s so much to take on, including the famous ballet dream scene—here danced in Fosse style—stage lighting and woke cowboys.

Alissandrini spreads the net wide. There is a spoof of “Whatever Lola Wants” from Damn Yankees, and actress Jenny Lee Stern does a spot-on Judy Garland complaining about all the actresses trying to portray her in movies and on stage. Forbidden Broadway has always found a way to play to Broadway buffs while still staying fun for those who have only seen the biggest blockbuster of the year (or the movie version). Alessandrini says he uses his less Broadwaysavvy mother as a litmus test to see how it plays. “Children always like it,” he told the Des Moines Register. “They love the tunes, they love the singing, they love the costume changes.” The costumes and wigs are pitch perfect— “There are something like 75 costume changes in the show,” says Alessandrini—and the cast should be commended for its ability to keep up with the quick switchovers. There’s no Frozen
Elsa hair on a green witch, or Hamilton coat on Beetlejuice. Big Broadway stars can sometimes be seen in the New York audience. Alessandrini told the Des Moines Register that he has probably roasted Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone the most: “They always came to see their parodies.” He adds that Stephen Sondheim was also a frequent audience member. “He was always interested in what we did.” Whether it’s the latest Tony winner or a show that was popular before you were born, there’s something for everyone to laugh about. Get your tickets now because “The Phantom,” “Curly,” and “Elphaba” are waiting to entertain you. SAMUELI THEATER November 16–18 | Tickets start at $79

Time travel with Postmodern Jukebox WHEN SCOTT BRADLEE started shooting videos in college of his friends performing jazz music in his basement, it was just for a hoot. And when they started performing modern rock songs in the style of past music genres, it was just an extra layer of fun. They posted the results on YouTube. Then they recorded a medley of 1980s songs in the style of ragtime, and things started to take off. They did “A Motown Tribute to Nickelback” and a 1940s cover of Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” Things went off the charts. But Center fans know all this because they have welcomed Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ) here several times. Now PMJ returns with a new show, Life in the Past Lane. It’s like a walk through a vintage music store run by a Top 40 radio station. “They take a song that the present audience is familiar with and manipulate its style to fit different moment in time,” says the Washington Square News. “They flawlessly integrate the old and the new.” Their concerts regularly sell out and they have an international following.
Postmodern Jukebox has a musical rolodex full of today’s most exciting vocalists, instrumentalists, and tap dancers to call on as it takes its world-wide audience through a time capsule of the popular music styles of the past 100 years. What would your grandma think of your favorite Swifty tune if it was sung like a 1950s Chuck Berry song? Would Uncle Bob think twice about a hip-hop song if he heard it sounding like a 1940s swing style? They’ve done Justin Bieber as a Dixieland tune, Radiohead in a jazz mode, and Blink 182 in ballad style—and it all works. Whether you’re a vinyl aficionado or a TikTok fashionista, you’ll love the rollicking fun PMJ creates in its celebration of the greatest 20th century musical genres—the perfect patina of “vintage” and “modern.” Catch a ride with PMJ for an unforgettable trip through 100 years of timeless music. HOPE HERE
means breast cancer loses and life wins
Women are the strength that uplifts, the wisdom that guides, the heart of our families, friends, and communities. Yet, as women, how often do we embrace our own well-being with the same passion we share with others? At City of Hope, we know that early detection can mean victory over breast cancer and a promise to those who look up to you, rely on you, and love you. Scheduling an annual mammogram can help ensure you will be there for the laughter, the milestones, and all the countless moments that make your world complete.
TO SCHEDULE YOUR ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM, CALL 949.671.4100. Most major PPO plans and Medicare accepted.
