MASTERING THE ART OF THE BEDROOM

95 YEARS OF SWEDISH EXCELLENCE

Since 1926, four generations of the Ljung family have aspired to produce the most comfortable and technologically advanced beds on the market.

As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices. Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientific community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide. The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.

High-flying musical for the child in all of us

Peter Pan is the classic story of the boy who won’t grow up and his adventures in Neverland with new friends the Darling children. Families will be charmed by the show coming to the Center in August. But this production will be a bit different.

“The overall story is fun, imaginative, and varied, which keeps the young theatregoers engaged,” says Talkin’Broadway.com. “The importance of family, even if non-traditional, and of letting kids be kids, remain major themes.”

Peter Pan is full of excitement and adventure and features iconic and timeless songs including “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Neverland.”

The original play by J.M. Barrie opened 120 years ago, when life was just a bit different than today. This is the first production to set the show in current day. The scene in the Darling children’s bedroom opens with a bored teenager babysitting the children, rather than Nana, the St. Bernard dog. Wendy is on her phone attempting to create a video she hopes will go viral.

There are a few other changes. In the original play there were some character depictions were not in tune with the 21st century. It was time to correct some anachronistic ideas.

“The plot celebrates, rather than derides, indigenous peoples,” says Talkin’Broadway.com. “The changes are appropriate and not heavy handed.”

In this production the story has been given a sensitive update in a new adaptation by celebrated Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse (Sigcangu Lakota Nation). “I am thrilled to be part of bringing Peter Pan to life for a new generation,” said FastHorse in a statement. “If you loved this musical before, you will still see the show that enchanted you, while discovering a Peter Pan that everyone can enjoy,

without harm, for many years to come.”

It begins when Peter Pan and his mischievous sidekick, Tinker Bell, fly into the bedroom of the Darling children late one night. With a sprinkle of fairy dust and a few happy thoughts, the children—and audience—are taken on a magical journey they will never forget. The special effects are breathtaking.

“This reimagined production addressed the need for a script update and it did not disappoint,” says Broadwayworld.com. “The cast was nothing short of fantastic, featuring a youthful and diverse ensemble that breathed new life into their roles. Nolan Almeida as Peter Pan, Cody Garcia as Captain Hook, Hawa Kamara as Wendy, and the rest of the ensemble, including the talented Lost Boys, Indians, and pirates, exhibited remarkable chemistry, making the performance truly captivating.”

As for Wendy’s video, we think footage of Capt. Hook dancing with the Lost Boys would be more than enough to keep people clicking on her Tik Tok.

Plastic fantastic

Dixie, Dixie, Dixie. What’s not to love about our favorite Tupperware sales gal? Some reps just tell you how great the cupcake carrier is. Dixie Longate will not only do that but also show you how it can be used for transporting Jello shots—37 of them. Now that’s thinking outside the plastic box.

Dixie’s Tupperware Party returns to Samueli Theater, 72 years after Brownie Wise started the original party in 1951 while working for the Tupperware company. (Dixie worships Brownie.) Most women organized parties as a way to socialize and earn some money. For Dixie it was a condition of her prison release when her parole officer told her she needed to get a job. (Please don’t ask her what she was in for.) What experience did she have to offer an employer? In this case, her gift of the gab was just the thing to guarantee her success as a Tupperware saleswoman. It was also a great excuse to be able to drink on the job.

Then, in 2007, a friend suggested she take her party to Broadway. Dixie could get out of Mobile, Alabama and take a break from her three kids. The show actually went off-Broadway, where it was nominated for prestigious awards. She didn’t win, but she did make a lot of sales, so Dixie decided to take her Tupperware on the road and share her story—and find new customers.

Dixie loves entertaining America, and it has made her Tupperware’s second-highest product salesperson—in real life! That’s the great thing about her party-shows: You can actually buy Tupperware. She has catalogues and order forms available and hopes you will fill them with lots of cool stuff (but it’s not required). She needs to send some money back to those kids. What really makes the shows funny is, of course, Dixie herself. “Dixie includes audience participation and a little bit of empowerment and homespun wisdom, resulting in Dixie’s Tupperware Party leaving your heart a little

bigger and your food a little fresher,” says Broadwayworld.com.

“Once Dixie starts talking there’s no stopping her,” says The Hollywood Reporter. “But the most important part of a Tupperware party isn’t the Tupperware, it’s the party. In the end, Dixie knows it’s not “the fantastic plastic crap” that matters, it’s the people.”

This is your opportunity to buy the Ultimate Silicone Stand-Up Bag set or that fabulous cupcake/shots carrier and laugh while doing it. And remember, if you sit in front, Dixie might make you part of the show!

Samueli Theater July 10–14 | Tickets start at $39

WARNING

The show is quite bawdy and there is a lot of drinking, so it’s not appropriate for children. Hey, even Dixie left her kiddos at home.

Give us a clue

Can you really make a stage show out of the premise of a board game? We have a clue about this.

Clue comes to the Center in July for some summer fun for everyone. It’s got all the usual suspects, rooms, and potential murder weapons of the classic Hasbro board game that is still wildly popular today. But in this theater production, who gets the first roll of the dice? It’s a hilarious whodonit.

A diverse group of characters has been invited by Mr. Boddy to Boddy Manor. He has been blackmailing all the guests (who do not know each other), but what does he expect to be the result of this party? Probably not his own death, but he’s the first body on the floor. From there, the most entertaining murder and mayhem ensues and not even the butler is safe.

“Let murder begin!” says the Louisville Courier Journal. “Clue is chock-full of giggleworthy one-liners and physical comedy that

ratchets up to a thrilling conclusion.”

“This Clue doesn’t take itself too seriously,” says the Minneapolis Star Tribune, but the director’s “fluid, fast-paced production has the cadence of musical comedy … and the taut script teems with insider and har-har puns.”

The game Clue was invented in England during World War II, inspired in part by the mass popularity of Agatha Christie’s murder-mystery novels. It crossed the pond in 1949 and was an instant hit. Setting the mystery in a country house lent an extra layer of mystery, with murder being harder to solve in an isolated location with lots and lots of rooms and potential murder weapons.

Look out for a twist somewhere in the show. Is it the “twist” of a knife? Or will it be something “wrench”ing? We can’t give you a clue.

Puppets, Peter Pan, and Gruffalos

Young children like to copy what their parents are doing. And how often do we hear the plaintive “You do it, so why can’t I?” The Center’s Family Series is a perfect opportunity to answer that with, “You can!” When the whole family attends a performance in the series, kids can feel just like the grown-ups in the big performance halls. Performances are held in Samueli Theater, so children have a good view and won’t miss a minute of the show.

The series has two tiers: the Discovery Series for families and children ages 4-8, and the Explorer Series for families and children ages 7 and older. The Center’s education department brings the best of professional youth performances from around the world to Orange County specifically for our family audiences.

The Discovery Series is thrilled to debut a Center original musical co-produced with the renowned Cahoots NI, a leading Northern Irish theater company producing outstanding works for all ages. The Musicians of Bremen Live! is set in the American Southwest and follows four critters—a mule, chicken, bobcat, and coyote— who must leave their homes and agree to make a journey across the desert together. They intend to go to the big city and become famous as a musical band. But how will they get along? It’s not likely they would be friends in another situation—a chicken and a coyote? No way! They must find a way to get along and look after each other. This new musical will delight the

whole family and features live music, story, and song, along with plenty of theatrical magic.

What can a little kindness do for someone’s spirit? In Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch, poor Mr. Hatch doesn’t have any friends and leads a very dull life working in a shoelace factory and eating his lunch alone. One day a surprise package lands on his front porch with a thoughtful card. It changes his life—he starts smiling and helping his neighbors—until he’s told the package was delivered to the wrong house. Will the magic of kindness continue, or will he go back to his lonely days? Axis Theatre Company draws young eyes up to engage them in interactive experiences. This show is deceptively simple, completely fresh, and memorable.

Journey to Oz, presented by Experiential Theater Company, is not your ordinary telling of the familiar story. Patrons may think they are coming to watch a performance, but they might want to brush up their acting skills before they arrive. This company says if you are in the room, you are in the show!

“Audiences find out very quickly that they are there to be in a play,” says the show’s author, Christopher Park. “They take on roles as cocreators and collaborators who sing, dance, and act alongside professional performers. It is a safe environment, so no matter what the audience’s interest in participating, everyone feels just as welcome to watch as those who come up and play.”

14 SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
The Gruffalo’s Child

Your little munchkin could play a Munchkin or a Winkie or even Dorothy! The story is inspired not only by the famous Oz books but also L. Frank Baum’s personal journal entries and historic newspaper headlines, so there are surprises around every corner, even if you know the Oz story.

Wendy Darling herself tells the reimagined story of Peter Pan in Underneath a Magical Moon, a sparkling new production from Tutti Frutti. In this new narrative, the Darling children are camping in their garden playhouse. You’re invited to join them and fly into a fantastical world of adventure where, if you close your eyes and believe, you really can make anything happen. You might even meet hip-hop pirates. This production has exquisite live music and songs, and a sprinkle of fairy dust, and invites audiences of all ages to never grow up.

The Gruffalo is a famous name among young folks, but did you know he has kids? In The Gruffalo’s Child, his young daughter has been told not to go out at night because she might encounter the Big Bad Mouse. She’s not sure this creature exists so she sneaks out anyway on a windy night when everyone is asleep. She encounters woodland creatures and learns what can happen when you don’t obey your parents. This wonderful adaptation of the beloved book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler combines physical storytelling, humor, and original music to create a lively performance for all ages. Created by London-based Tall Stories Theatre Company, young imaginations will run wild with songs, laughs, and scary fun.

The Explorer Series begins with Jazzy Ash & the Leaping Lizards. A Center favorite, Ashli St. Armant is a musical treasure hunter and brings everyone on a Crescent City-inspired music adventure. (That’s the nickname for New Orleans.) She and her band highlight traditional songs, rhythms and rhymes that have been handed down by African Americans for generations. Delving into the history of jazz, she introduces jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and shares family stories. This interactive program will have everyone out of their seats as Ashli leads a call-andresponse sing-along, an imagined Mardi Gras parade and a grand finale that will have

everyone on their feet. (Beignets not included.)

The Explorer Series always includes a performance from the Center’s Broadway Series appropriate for younger audiences. This season you’re invited to Annie, who reminds you that sunshine is just around the corner. Featuring the iconic book and score, the world’s most famous orphan shows us that when times are tough it may be hard to hold on to hope, but determination can get you through. This musical is a celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit, and remains the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks that may come your way.

Philomena is having a difficult time fitting into a new life with her stepfamily. In The Magic City, she hides in the attic to escape her annoying stepbrother and creates a miniature city. Later, she wakes up and finds that her city has come alive! Created by Manual Cinema, this story uses overhead projectors, paper shadow puppets, actors on camera, and live music for a story that explores the complexities and joys of building a family. Manual Cinema makes immersive stories for stage and screen that are filled with liveliness, ingenuity, and theatricality.

All performances also include one hour of free, fun activities for families to enjoy before the show. Children and their families can enjoy being creative and exploring themes of the show they are about to see.

Additionally, Somebody Loves You , Mr. Hatch, Underneath a Magical Moon, and The Gruffalo’s Child will offer Sensory Friendly/Relaxed performances for those families needing a more relaxed sensory environment.

New season, new music

Classical music. Many people think it’s stuffy, conservative and boring. Think again! There are works on the 2024-25 Chamber Series that were written within our own lifetimes, and even just last year. Others hark back to medieval times. Experience and enjoy the season’s musical conversation between centuries.

Classical music keeps evolving. Which era you prefer is a matter of personal taste, but through time composers have continued to create new sounds and push the genre forward.

The Esmé Quartet starts our series with a welcome return. The quartet is fairly new, having formed just eight years ago, but has already raked in major prizes from top string competitions, including first prize and four special prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.

While the Esmé is superb when playing the recognized canon of string quartet music, the ensemble also likes to spotlight what is new. For this appearance, they will play a piece by American composer Augusta Read Thomas. Music critic Edward Reichel wrote, “Augusta Read Thomas is without question one of the best and most important composers that this country has today. She has a lot to say and says it in a way that is intelligent yet appealing and sophisticated.” Thomas’s piece is friendly and approachable, while also stretching the idea of what classical music can be.

The Fauré Quartett is a German piano quartet, and the ensemble is considered a pioneer in this genre. It quickly realized that this combination of instruments offered new insights into undiscovered repertoire. The quartet has premiered newly found works written in the 1930s as well as contemporary pieces composed specifically for them. The ensemble has made highly regarded benchmark recordings with works by Mozart, Brahms, and Mendelssohn and pop songs by Peter Gabriel and Steely Dan all on the same album.

The Chamber Series changes gears with a two-piano concert by Matthew Aucoin and Connor Hanick. Polymath Aucoin is a composer, conductor, pianist, and writer, best known for composing operas. In 2016 he was appointed Los Angeles Opera’s first ever artist-inresidence and has conducted a number of productions there. Hanick is praised by The New York Times as a pianist whose “technical refinement, color, crispness, and wonderous variety of articulation benefits works by any master.”

The concert will open with a work Aucoin composed for himself and Hanick. The closer will be a lively piece by American composer John Adams, called “Hallelujah Junction.” Adams used a truck stop of that name in Northern California as his inspiration: He had a cabin nearby. The truck stop is now gone, but its spirit remains in this exuberant two-piano piece.

18 SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Fauré Quartett Théotime Langlois de Swarte

The Takács Quartet was founded 49 years ago. Today, only one original member remains in the ensemble, but it has maintained its magnificent sound. The Takács is at the top of its game and has been consistent in artistic excellence and its approach to standard repertoire and more recent works. In Southern California the Takács plays exclusively for the Center’s Chamber Series, and we are delighted to have them.

For this season’s engagement, they bring an additional cellist for Shubert’s Quintet in C Major. This is one of the composer’s most popular works and will be a treat for the audience.

The program will also include a work by Haydn and String Quartet No. 2 by Sir Benjamin Britten, which premiered in 1945. He wrote the piece to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Baroque English composer Henry Purcell, whom he admired and considered to be one of England’s leading composers. “Henry Purcell also influenced [Britten’s] musical development,” says musicologist Melvin Berger. “Purcell’s qualities, which Britten described as “clarity, brilliance, tenderness and strangeness,” were among the traits he wanted in incorporate into his own writing.” Britten, in turn, has had a major impact on the composers that followed.

Calidore Quartet returns with another string quartet commissioned by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting and written by Han Lash, whose pieces are beautiful, expressive, and in great demand. This is the third commission for the Calidore by the Schlichtings.

The ensemble is barely 13 years old and has already won some of the most prestigious competitions and awards in classical music. The quartet made headlines by winning the $100,000 Grand Prize at the 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition, the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, and an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The critics are equally effusive. The Washington Post says, “Four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think, and feel as one.”

Chamber music fans were thrilled last season by the performance of 28-year-old French violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte and his quartet, Le Consort. Baroque music returns this season with

Les Arts Florissants and Langlois de Swarte. Les Arts was founded by Texan William Christie, a harpsichordist and conductor who is renowned for his support of Baroque music and opera.

Langlois de Swarte auditioned for a place in Les Arts while a student. He had an interest in Baroque music, and although he wasn’t the right long-term fit for the group, he played with the ensemble for a couple of years before he formed his own quartet (at the age of 20). His time with Les Arts confirmed that Baroque music would be his first musical love, and he has since appeared as a guest soloist with the ensemble. For this engagement the program will center primarily on Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” The piece may be 300 years old, (the same age as Langlois de Swarte’s violin) but it remains fresh and as popular as ever.

The season closes with the return of Jordi Savall and his ensemble, Hespèrion XXI. Savall is a major figure in the field of early Western music, with a repertoire that touches on hundreds of years, including medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and classical.

Savall leads a small ensemble that plays period instruments. The group has traveled the world presenting music that reflects the early European works mixed with some Northern African sounds. “Refined, stately pieces were mixed with fiery numbers in which the sparks flew,” says InReview. “Savall often does this in his concerts: He spices things up no end.”

He formed Hespèrion XX in 1974. (It became XXI in 2000 to reflect the new century.) For those who love the early composers, Savall obliges with the obscure as well as the better known, including Dowland, Purcell, Gibbons and Tye.

He sees music as a way to overcome prejudice of past history. “Music is the best school for learning to share and accept others,” Savall says. “You share everything when you play music with people; this is something very intimate.”

This sentiment is probably a mantra for every group and every musician on our season, and they share that intimacy with us, their audience.

Banking on the Center

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has a stellar reputation as a place for everyone to enjoy the best of the performing arts. It is lucky to count many of Orange County’s top businesses as supporters, enabling not just international programming, but also community engagement and educational programming. PNC Bank is one of those businesses.

PNC Bank founded in 1865, established its regional presidents model in Orange County in 2021, and has made a positive mark. It’s an institution that combines the local connection of a community bank with the capabilities, technology, security, and resources of a leading national bank. Regional President Jarrod Ingle leads the market’s overall business and philanthropic efforts. Locally, the PNC team supports a wide variety of businesses with traditional and more complex banking and lending needs. Other services include asset management, commercial real estate and mortgage finances.

But that’s not all PNC Bank does. It is proud of its involvement in the local creative community. At the Center, PNC Bank has already sponsored trumpeter Chris Botti’s performance in April and the musical comedy Funny Girl, which includes that hymn to true love, “Don’t Rain on my Parade.” This summer, it will sponsor two more shows: the comedy Clue and Peter Pan, which will thrill patrons of all ages.

PNC Bank knows what a flourishing artistic landscape can mean for Orange County residents, who have world-class performances at their front door. It helps build a stronger community as well as drive local economic growth, and benefits everyone who lives and works here.

There are other benefits to having such a large performing arts institution locally: It can open perspectives for people of all ages with its

strong education department, which supports more than 350,000 individuals a year with quality arts instruction in both the community and on campus.

Much like the Center, PNC feels strongly about helping children in their early years learn how to thrive, creating a brighter future for them. Launched in 2004, the PNC Grow Up Great® is a $500 million, bilingual early childhood education initiative to help prepare children, particularly underserved children from birth through age 5, for success in school and life.

Since the start of PNC Grow Up Great, PNC has partnered with early childhood education experts to develop valuable resources and programs to support children, families, and early education teachers. Studies show that children who participate in high-quality preschool are more likely to achieve academically and to contribute to society in their adult lives.

The Center’s education department has especially strong focus in this area. It’s one reason there are often lines of buses in front of the concert halls disgorging hundreds of young students to see a Center Family Series production in Samueli Theater or hear a symphony orchestra in the concert hall. It may be the first time many children have been inside a theater, and they never forget the thrill and excitement of discovering this new experience.

Overall, the Center makes Orange County an attractive place for families to live, while employers can emphasize this amenity to potential job candidates. And who wouldn’t love the free events on the plaza? It’s hard to beat that.

“The Center impacts everyone, from young children to long-time residents,” says Ingle. “At PNC we are embedded in the fabric of the communities in which we live, work, and play. We believe in the power of the arts to change lives, build community and increase the economic vitality of our region. The Center is important to Orange County in so many ways and we are happy to be part of that.”
