People love Funny Girl
It could be a disaster to have your son-in-law turn your life story into a Broadway musical. But that’s what happened to Fanny Brice, and thank goodness he did!
That musical is Funny Girl, coming to the Center in May with all the fun, grit, and songs you love, including “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “People,” and “I’m the Greatest Star.” It’s a bittersweet comedy that tells the story of the indomitable girl from the Lower East Side of New York City who rose to stardom and the tempestuous relationship she had with gambler Nicky Arnstein, her second husband.
The story proves one thing: You can’t judge a book by its cover. Brice was not a particularly attractive woman, and her heavy local accent could grate. No one believed she could be a star,
but then a funny thing happened: Brice became a beloved performer.
Her son-in-law was film producer Ray Stark, who, after Brice’s death, thought the story would make a great show and produced the original Broadway hit musical. It opened in 1964 and starred Barbra Streisand (who also starred in the film version four years later).
Sixty years later, Funny Girl the musical is back with a fantastic production starring Katerina McCrimmon as Brice. Anyone who grew up with Funny Girl the movie might feel intimidated by Streisand’s famous powerhouse performance. Not McCrimmon. She gives Streisand a run for her money when she blows the walls out with “Don’t Rain on my Parade” in the first act.

“McCrimmon is a triplethreat dynamo who holds the audience’s focus every second she’s on stage, boasting a nasal Brooklyn bray in the comedic scenes, and a bell-toned belt for Jule Styne’s soaring tunes like ‘People’ that gave me chills just like a vintage Babs album,” says Orlando Weekly
“Funny Girl is a show that lives or dies on the abilities of the actress playing the titular role,” says Attractions magazine. “Katarina McCrimmon is an absolute powerhouse of a singer. Showing equal parts vulnerability and bravado, McCrimmon truly brings the multi-faceted Brice to life on stage.”
With one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and an updated book by Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic, you don’t want to miss the show Vogue magazine calls “Vivacious and delightfully glitzy.” Don’t let anyone rain on your parade—get your tickets now.
Segerstrom Hall May 28 – June 9 | Tickets start at $39
In her lifetime Fanny Brice’s theater roles were only a small part of her career. She had major hits singing “My Man” and “Second-Hand Rose,” both of which she premiered in Ziegfield Follies of 1921. For the next 30 years Brice’s fans continued to request she sing “My Man,” and in 1999 her recording of the hit song received a posthumous Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
Brice began making films in the 1920s. In the 1930s she created and starred in a hit radio show playing the wildly popular character of Baby Snooks, a bratty toddler. She was in her 40s at the time and played the role until her death at age 59 in 1951.

New jazz season goes black and white
The Center’s 2024–25 jazz season is leaning black and white… as in the keys of a piano. Three of our artists are pianists who each have their own particular approach, whether it’s Southern charm, Caribbean influences, or streaming small concerts from an artist’s home that are heard all over the world in real time.
Samara Joy makes a welcome return to the Center. She’s only 24 years old but she’s gone supersonic. Shortly after Joy’s previous appearance in Samueli Theater, she won Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammys and her second album won Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Joy had the jazz gene in her for quite a while, but she just didn’t know it. She was brought up surrounded by gospel and Motown music, and in high school she sang with the jazz band. But it wasn’t until she enrolled in college and declared as a voice major that she woke up to the possibilities of jazz. Campus friends introduced her to some jazz recordings and Joy’s career soon took off.
Now her voice is being called a once-in-ageneration sensation, and film director Regina King calls her “a young woman who seems like Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald are both living in her body.”
“When you have a gift, you can’t run away from it,” Joy told Huffpost. “I had to practice and develop my voice. I loved the fact that I could just be myself and express myself… There’s nothing like that feeling.”
Sean Mason didn’t learn to play the piano until he was in his early teens, but he’s made up for lost time by becoming a unique voice in jazz, steeped in the Southern echoes of his childhood home in North Carolina. The Sean Mason Quintet makes its Center debut with a sound that is described as highly melodic and infectious.
It was Branford Marsalis who heard Sean playing, suggested he move to New York City, and then told his brother Wynton Masalis to look out for this talent-driven kid. Mason made the most of it, quickly securing performances and residencies at some of the city’s most wellknown jazz clubs, all while attending The Juilliard School.

Sean Mason
Last year he released his debut album, The Southern Suite, and the music is timeless. It hits the intersection of the lowdown blues joint, the pew of a Black Baptist church, and the glamour of a Broadway score: uptown elegance mixed with downtown grit.
Even though Mason is in his mid-20s, his maturity stands out in his music, which is all instrumental. It embodies the essence of the Southern experience, celebrating the fun and joy of life.
We’re also celebrating some jazz birthdays this season, including pianist Monty Alexander, who is turning 80. This Grammy-nominated keyboard icon returns to the Jazz Series with his wide repertoire of music that includes the American Songbook, blues, gospel, and bebop.
Alexander was born in Jamaica, and his music still shows its playful Caribbean influences. He was 17 when his family moved to Miami, where he played in clubs and picked up on American jazz influences. Two years later Frank Sinatra happened to hear Alexander and invited him to New York City where Alexander became a club favorite. He performed with Sinatra and soon counted other popular jazz musicians, including Miles Davis, Count Basie, and Milt Jackson, as friends.
He told Strand magazine that he wants his concerts to “bring people together and have fun.” Alexander is a perennial festival favorite and has appeared at the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival 23 times since 1976. For the past
decade he’s been the artistic director and performer at his own Monty Alexander Jazz Festival in Maryland. He continues doing gigs with other musicians and appearing on dozens of recordings.
“Even now, it’s one world of music for me,” says Alexander. “Even though I do this thing and the other thing, at the end of the day it’s Monty Alexander. I still seem to make people happy.”
When did you last hear a cappella gospel music that could make angels weep? Take 6 is the model for vocal genius, with six voices that sound like a finely tuned orchestra. The group makes its Center debut for Christmas, with a captivating take on holiday classics that will make you forget the traffic jams outside.
Formed in the 1980s, the lineup has changed a few members over the years, but never the crystal tones that make their music sound so magic. They can do just about any genre, integrating gospel with inspirational lyrics, to jazz, R&B, doo wop, and blues. The cross section of artists that they have worked with include Don Henley, Queen Latifah, Randy Travis, CeCe Winans, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Jacob Collier.
But like a finely tuned orchestra the group continues to push boundaries with their concerts and their many recordings. This is an evening that will make the holidays sound better than you’ve ever imagined.
We’re welcoming the new kid on the block to the Jazz Series. The recently created Pacific Jazz Orchestra (PJO) calls Los Angeles home, of course! With the city’s talent pool of musicians, where else could you put together an ensemble like this representing jazz, a uniquely American

art form? The artistic director and conductor for the 40-piece orchestra is Chris Walden, who has worked with the top musicians and singers in the industry.
“It’s not a symphony orchestra, but it’s also not just a big band,” said Walden to Variety. “It’s a hybrid ensemble with instrumentation that allows us to explore the boundaries of jazz and create collaborations with a wide range of guest artists.”
For its Center debut, PJO will celebrate the 80th birthday of singer/songwriter/pianist Ivan Lins, an icon in Brazilian music, who joins the evening along with guests Jane Monheit and Lee Ritenhour. Lins’ songs have been covered by many of the big names in jazz, including George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Sting, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Bublé, just to name a few. He keeps on releasing successful albums and has won three Latin Grammys. Lins loves working with an orchestra. “If I was a rich guy, all my albums would have orchestra or a big band,” he told Downbeat magazine.
This is also a welcome return for Monheit, a Center favorite. She already has a Lins connection: She has performed with Lins and writes English lyrics for him.
Monheit grew up in a musical family and even at a young age was drawn to jazz and Broadway musicals. Having performed for more than 20 years, she has made 12 studio albums and countless recorded guest appearances, including here at the Center.
Grammy winner Ritenhour played his first recording session at 16, and the following year he worked with Tony Bennett. As an L.A. native he was in the right place at the right time. This jazz guitarist also works with fusion, crossover and post-bop, as well as Brazilian jazz: He has recorded with Lins. Ritenhour is a legend in the business and in great demand as a sessions
artist. He has celebrated more than 60 years in the business and isn’t slowing down yet, as we’ll see at this concert.
The Emmet Cohen Trio makes its Center debut. Cohen is a multitalented pianist, who started playing at age 3. At 21 he was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. But he really made his name during the pandemic when he, his trio, and special guest artists—including Samara Joy, Christian McBride, and Joe Lovano—began Live from Emmet’s Place, recorded in his New York City apartment. Thousands of jazz fans around the world watched on the live stream and millions more watched the videos.
The massive popularity has moved to IRL and he’s now performing in festivals, music venues and jazz clubs around the world, including Village Vanguard, Ronnie Scott’s in London, and the Cotton Club in Tokyo.
Of course, he and his fellow musicians are immensely talented, but there’s more to it. The Guardian praises “Cohen’s energy, exceptional musicianship, and likable personality” and “his inclusive brand of jazz, incorporating the entire tradition of the genre from the 1920s to the present day.” Have you heard any stride piano lately?

Funny Girl
Welcome to musical comedy heaven! Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theatre has the whole shebang!
Featuring one of the greatest musical scores of all time, including classic songs “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People,” this bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage . Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened—she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway

Rock star with a cello
Is the phrase “cello rock star” an oxymoron? It’s certainly not one that is often heard, unless you are talking about Stjepan Hauser. This Croatian classical/crossover cello musician has his own ideas about music. “My passion is to show the world the versatility of the cello,” says Hauser. He and his band will be in Samueli Theater for one performance only next month and you will not want to miss it.
While it’s not unusual to hear a Pops orchestra play pop or rock music, Hauser takes it to new levels. “When I play my arrangements of these rock songs on cello, I’m giving a whole new dimension to a song,” Hauser told Strings magazine. “It sounds like a classical piece written for the cello. And people think, ‘Wow, that’s classical music.’ With a totally different approach it sounds like something new.”
His classical credentials are impeccable. Hauser studied at Trinity College of Music in
London and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Before he had graduated he was chosen to play in two gala concerts to honor cello virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich.
In 2011, two years after he graduated, he released an album: Brahms, Beethoven & Bruch for Clarinet, Cello and Piano. The same year he was invited to tour with Elton John as a member of his band. (He has also played with U2 and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.)
2011 was also the year that Hauser and his friend and fellow cellist, Luka Šulić, performed a cellos-only cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” It was a runaway hit and YouTube sensation, and he gained the moniker Rock Star with a Cello.
Hauser and Šulić went on to form 2CELLOS and were the first instrumental act to perform as special guests on an episode of Glee 2CELLOS has now recorded four albums and played in world-famous venues including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House and Madison Square Garden.
“The great thing about cello is that it has all the range,” he says. “The cello is everything, low and high and in between. It’s the perfect register that’s so nice, warm, and gentle. It’s really pleasing to hear anytime.”
Hauser is also keeping an eye out for the next generation of musicians. He has created the HAUSER Music Foundation to help young, talented musicians overcome barriers, including building educative infrastructures and providing assistance to underserved regions where school music programs are nonexistent.
This concert will be an extraordinary performance of cello pyrotechnics that align beauty, elegance, and true rock muscle. You will want to be right up front.
