HELPING NATURE LIVE LARGE. SINCE 1874.

Long before we were a museum, we were just a bunch of naturalists and curiosity seekers who loved studying, exploring, and learning. About nature. About wildlife. About this amazing place we call home. And 150 years later, we still gather every day to do just that.

Be part of the biggest year in our history by visiting The Nat, becoming a member, or taking part in our nature activities. Visit sdnat.org.

Our work spans Southern California and the Baja California Peninsula. Pictured here, coastal San Diego County.

can you hear it now? the sound of your inner voice no longer on mute

The whispering wind through the bamboo forest, the crunch of your boots on miles of private hiking trails, the deep exhale after a day of fitness for mind, body, and spirit, the irrepressible sigh of a massage every day. The ring of your inner voice calling you back. It’s all inside.

THIS WAY TO NEVERLAND

“GO ON A journey from the second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning…” As part of its 46th anniversary season, Broadway San Diego presents the touring, high-flying (literally) musical Peter Pan, July 30-Aug. 4 at the San Diego Civic Theatre. A thriller for all ages for nearly 70 years, the timeless tale centers on Peter, once a “normal” child who ran away to a mysterious place called Neverland so he would never grow up and die. Along with his mischievous partner in crime, the scene-stealing fairy Tinker Bell, Peter visits the Darling children (Wendy, John and Michael) in their London bedroom one night—taking them on an extraordinary adventure filled with magic and pirates, led by Captain Hook. At one point, the children are taken captive and ordered to “walk the plank.”

Playwright Larissa FastHorse’s enchanting production is based on the original story by J.M. Barrie—with choreography by Lorin Latarro and directed by Lonny Price—featuring iconic songs such as “I Won’t Grow Up,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I’m Flying” and “Neverland.” 1100 Third Ave., downtown, broadwaysd.com

BALBOA PARK TO THE BAY

MUSIC IS IN the air this summer at two of our favorite alfresco San Diego venues. An annual tradition of 40-plus years, Balboa Park’s popular Twilight in the Park concert series comprises live music and dancing at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion—taking place at 6:30 p.m. most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 29—all free of charge. (Come at 5 p.m. for free dance lessons by the International Dance Association of San Diego County.) The concert lineup includes the Jazz Jammers on July 23; Matchbox Twenty Too on July 25;

crowd-favorite the Bayou Brothers on Aug. 14; Coronado Concert Band on Aug. 27; and the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra on Aug. 28. balboapark.org/twilight-concerts

Among the myriad July concerts at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, we’re particularly excited about Beethoven by the Bay on July 12—an all-Beethoven concert with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and violinist Geneva Lewis. The repertoire includes the overture to Creatures of Prometheus; Beethoven’s Violin Concerto; and his epic Symphony No. 5. Nicolas Ellis conducts. theshell.org

The 7 Fingers presents Duel Reality—an electric one-act production that combines theater, acrobatics and music—at The Old Globe July 6-Aug. 4. theoldglobe.org In the world-premiere drama Derecho, running at La Jolla Playhouse July 23-Aug. 18, two sisters— a politician and a struggling musician—find their relationship tested as a series of intense thunderstorms unleashes around them. lajollaplayhouse.org Lamb’s Players Theatre stages the Tony-winning musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, through Aug. 18—with a multitalented adult cast portraying middle school students. lambsplayers.org

MUSEUMS

Must-See Marvels at Balboa Park

TWO BALBOA PARK museums offer dynamic new exhibits to check out this summer. Get to know one of the most prolific artists of the 20th and 21st centuries at The San Diego Museum of Art, which presents Jasper Johns: Drawings & Prints, on view through Oct. 27. Jasper Johns, age 94, is an acclaimed painter, sculptor, draftsman and printmaker; and a central figure in the development of postwar art. The exhibit showcases 14 of Johns’ significant works on paper, includ-

ing six original drawings on loan from the artist, dating from 1960 to 2021. sdmart.org Now on view at the park’s Comic-Con Museum, Becoming Betty Boop makes its worldwide debut. Exclusive to the museum, the multimedia exhibit spotlights the history and evolution of the iconic, animated cartoon

character—from her debut in the film Dizzy Dishes in 1930; to her glamorous costumes; to screenings of Betty Boop films; to insights on the eight women who have voiced Betty over the years; to never-before-seen artifacts, dolls, comic books, masks and much more. comic-con.org/museum

SK MUSIC DIRECTOR INON BARNATAN

how he came up with the theme for this year’s La Jolla Music Society SummerFest, “Inside Stories,” and he’ll quote Heinrich Heine: “When words leave off, music begins.” The impulse to both tell stories through music and tell the stories behind the music led Barnatan—himself a worldacclaimed concert pianist—to plan the 19 concerts and

invite dozens of the world’s top chamber and classical musicians for the 38th SummerFest. Barnatan promises the festival will be “an exploration into the depth of storytelling through the universal language of music.”

“Music, after all, has the unique ability to tell stories without uttering a single word, conveying emotions and experiences that resonate deeply within our souls,” Barnatan says. “This year, we’ll delve into narratives

“Since I became Music Director, SummerFest has grown significantly in both scale and ambition,” Barnatan adds. “We’ve expanded our repertoire to include more contemporary works and innovative collaborations. Getting to know the hall, our audience, and gaining their trust has allowed us to take more creative risks; and it’s been rewarding to see our community embrace these changes with enthusiasm.”

SummerFest—which runs from July 26 to Aug. 24 at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center (aka The Conrad) in La Jolla—sees the return of many popular artists; as well as many debuts. Barnatan says he

The tale is that of a soldier’s pact with the devil; and the musical performances will be led by British composer and conductor Thomas Adès—returning for a second year as SummerFest’s Composer-in-Residence.

The Soldier’s Tale is part of the festival’s ongoing Synergy Initiative—a series co-produced by Barnatan and investor and philanthropist Clara Wu Tsai—which invites creators of music, dance, spoken word and visual /CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER is full of mistaken identities, rapid-fire dialogue, and unexpected twists. Camoletti’s recipe for comedic confusion combines some sexy hanky-panky and miscommunication. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

MARC SHAIMAN, award-winning composer, lyricist, orchestrator, and musician, has successfully created music for TV, films, recordings, and theater since entering show business at the age of 16 in 1976.

Shaiman has been OSCAR® nominated seven times (for Mary Poppins Returns, Sleepless In Seattle, Patch Adams, The First Wives Club, The American President, and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut).

He has received three TONY® Award nominations (winning one for co-writing the score to Hairspray with co-lyricist Scott Wittman), eight GRAMMY® Award nominations (winning two for The Original Cast Recordings of Hairspray and Some Like It Hot), twelve EMMY® Award nominations (winning one for his work on Billy Crystal’s Academy Award hosting), two Golden Globe nominations (for the song “The Star” (co-written with Mariah Carey) and his score for Mary Poppins Returns), and two BAFTA nominations (for Sleepless In Seattle and Mary Poppins Returns).

Shaiman’s other film work includes Beaches, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, City Slickers, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, A Few Good Men, Sister Act (1 & 2), George of the Jungle, In and Out, Hocus Pocus (1 & 2), The Bucket List, Parental Guidance, and Bros. He served as an Executive Producer of the successful film adaptation of his Broadway musical Hairspray.

The original musicals he has co-written for Broadway and The West End are Hairspray ( TONY® and Olivier Award winner for Best Musical), the TONY®-nominated Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, the TONY®-winning Catch Me If You Can, the Olivier Award-winning Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, and most recently, the TONY® and GRAMMY® Award-winning Some Like It Hot. The most award-winning musical of last season, Some Like It Hot will launch a North American tour in fall 2024. Next up is the Broadway version of Smash, the television show for which Marc & Scott were nominated for two EMMY® Awards.

Other Broadway credits are composing incidental music for revivals of The Odd Couple (with Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick) and Plaza Suite (starring Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick).

Broadway concert credits are Peter Allen: Up In One, Bette Midler’s Divine Madness, Ellie Greenwich’s Leader Of The Pack, and Patti LuPone On Broadway.

Shaiman has co-produced and arranged award-winning recordings for music icons such as Bette Midler, Harry Connick Jr., and Mariah Carey, including the GRAMMY®winning recordings “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and “From A Distance.”

His television ventures include The Sweeney Sisters on SNL, countless award and talk show appearances with Billy Crystal, Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Lane, and Martin Short, Jenifer Lewis’ Jackie’s Back, the EMMY®-winning SNL 40th, the aforementioned Smash and Rogers: The Musical for Marvel’s Hawkeye. His three most recent projects for television are the Rob Reiner-directed HBO documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, The Kennedy Center Honors, where he arranged and performed in tribute to his friend Billy Crystal, and—with Scott Wittman and Pasek & Paul—co-writing the song “Which Of The Pickwick Triplets Did It,” which Steve Martin performed on Only Murders In The Building. FOURTH OF JULY WITH THE

COMMODORES

PROGRAM

TO BE ANNOUNCED FROM THE STAGE

Approximate program length: 1 hour, 30 minutes

ABOUT THE ARTIST

For three decades, the COMMODORES have remained a force in the music industry. “The Legends of Motown”, “Hit, After Hit, After Hit”, “GRAMMY® Award Winners”, “All The Emotion, All the Excitement”, “If You Haven’t Seen Them Live, You Haven’t Heard The Commodores”.

The Commodores aren’t just any group. They have staying power. Just like their hit song “Brick House,” the Commodores have created a foundation that just won’t budge.

After churning out hit after hit in the Motown days, the Commodores still hadn’t achieved GRAMMY® recognition. This wasn’t to be until 1986, without Lionel Richie, when the Commodores released Night Shift

In 1968 the group was formed while all the members were in college at Tuskeegee Institute. After being discovered by Berry Gordy, the Commodores went on to sell over 60 million records for Motown. With hits like “Machine Gun” and “Sail On”, the Commodores became proven artists. They proved it then. They proved it in 1986 with “Night Shift”, and now they are ready to prove it again.

Unlike many other groups, the Commodores haven’t rested on their early hits. Quite the contrary, the Commodores have continued to put out quality work. With the creation of their new label, the Commodores released Commodores Hits Vol. I, Commodores Hits Vol. II, Commodores Christmas, and Commodores XX-No Tricks. The newest CD Commodores Live was recorded during the groups 1997 U.S. tour and released in December 1998 along with the TV special of the same name. The Commodores believe in their work, but they are not the only ones:

“Seventies phenoms return with a self produced album filled with some great music. The Commodores look set for a fantastic return.”

-BRE Music Report

“Venerable pop/R&B band issues its first single in five years engaging vocals woo with warmth and restraint.”

Please note: the San Diego Symphony does

-Billboard

The successful Commodores of the present have not only produced six new albums, and embarked upon a world-wide tour, but have created their own record label, Commodores Records and Entertainment. Today, the Commodores stand not only as talented and successful musicians, but as artists determined to continue their success into the future. 

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Australian conductor CHRISTOPHER DRAGON is the Music Director of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Colorado Symphony. He joined the Colorado Symphony in the 2015/2016 Season as Associate Conductor – a position he held for four years. For three years prior, Dragon held the inaugural position of Assistant Conductor with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch.

Dragon has a versatile portfolio ranging from live-topicture performances including Nightmare Before Christmas, Toy Story and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, a wide variety of collaborations with artists such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Cynthia Erivo and Joshua Bell, to standard and contemporary orchestral repertoire such as Danny Elfman’s Violin Concerto, Eleven Eleven; all areas of which he has become highly sought after. Christopher has become known for his charisma, high energy and affinity for a good costume, consistently delivering unforgettable performances that has made him an audience favourite.

Recent highlights include his successful debut with the San Francisco Symphony, performances of Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton with Danny Elfman reprising the role of Jack Skellington and historic performances with Nathaniel Rateliff at Walt Disney Concert Hall and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Upcoming debuts include the WRD Funkhausorchester, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.

Christopher is highly sought after as a guest conductor and has worked with San Francisco Symphony, Utah Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. In Australia, he has guest conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. His 2015 debut performance at the Sydney Opera House with John Pyke and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was released on album by ABC Music and won an ARIA the following year.

He has also conducted at numerous festivals including the Breckenridge and Bangalow Music Festivals, with both resulting in immediate re-invitations. RADY SHELL SUMMER 2024 SEASON

HARRY CONNICK, JR.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

HARRY CONNICK, JR.’s career has exemplified excellence across multiple platforms in the entertainment world over the past three decades. He has received GRAMMY® and EMMY® awards as well as TONY® nominations for his live and recorded musical performances, his achievements in film and television and his appearances on Broadway as both an actor and a composer. Connick continues to establish himself as a best-selling musician and singer, a composer, actor and legendary live performer, with millions of recordings sold around the world.

The foundation of Connick’s art is the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at the age of five. Highlights of his music career include several multi-platinum recordings such as When Harry Met Sally, Blue Light, Red Light, When My Heart Finds Christmas, Come By Me, and Only You. True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter, was released in 2019 and followed by the Broadway show that he wrote (including arranging and orchestrating about 1100 pages of music) and directed. The show, Harry Connick, Jr.- A Celebration of Cole Porter, honored the musical achievements of one of America’s most respected songwriters. In 2020 as the world entered the pandemic lockdown, Connick retreated to his home studio and emerged with an album of songs of faith and inspiration. Alone With My Faith, released during the spring of 2021, displays the sheer breadth of Connick’s talents as he wrote new songs, arranged all songs, played every instrument, and sang every voice. Alone With My Faith earned Connick his 16th career GRAMMY® nomination for Best Roots Gospel Album.

Connick has appeared in 20 feature films with actors such as Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Renée Zellweger, Sigourney Weaver, and Morgan Freeman. His work on television includes starring roles on Will and Grace, South Pacific and American Idol. Following his very successful stint as a mentor on American Idol, Connick was invited to join Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban at the judges’ table for Seasons XIII, XIV and XV. The Los Angeles Times noted that viewers should tune in to Idol, “if only for Connick. He’s magnetic, as well as the most eager to hear new talent, the hardest to impress and the first to offer technical advice.” While Entertainment Weekly raved that he brings a “frank honesty but also lighthearted energy” to the show, “offering thoughtful critiques” resulting in a “fun, rollicking viewing experience.” When Australia’s Seven Network rebooted Australian Idol in 2022, Connick happily joined the judges’ panel for the relaunch.

Please note: the San Diego Symphony does not appear on this concert.

In 2016, he launched Harry, a national daytime television show, which earned 11 Daytime EMMY® nominations, including nominations for best host, and a Critics’ Choice nomination for best talk show. In December of 2021, he stepped into the shoes of Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks in Annie Live! which aired on NBC. Meanwhile for his appearances on Broadway, Connick has received TONY® nominations as both a lead actor in The Pajama Game and as a composer/ lyricist for Thou Shalt Not

Despite his busy career, Connick has always found the time to be charitable and has done some of his most important work in his efforts to help New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He, along with friend Branford Marsalis, conceived of “Musicians’ Village,” and its centerpiece the Ellis Marsalis Center. Musicians’ Village provides homes for indigent musicians while the Center uses music as its focal point of a holistic strategy to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and

social injustice. Connick’s honors, including a star on the celebrated Hollywood Walk of Fame, induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, Honorary Doctorates from Tulane and Loyola Universities and the Jefferson Award for Public Service, have not led Harry Connick, Jr. to slow his creative pace; they only confirm his determination to apply his talents in ways that prove inspirational to other artists and public-spirited citizens. 

The Musicians, members of the Board of Directors and the Administrative Staff wish to gratefully acknowledge the growing list of friends who give so generously to support the San Diego Symphony. To make a gift, please call (619) 615-3901. The following listing reflects pledges entered as of March 6, 2024.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

One of today’s leading musical artists, TONY® Award-winning Maestro TED SPERLING is a classically trained musician whose career has spanned from the concert hall and the opera house to the Broadway stage. Presently Artistic Director of MasterVoices, he has led such symphony orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Boston Pops, San Diego Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, the Iceland Symphony, Czech National Symphony, and BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera. Formerly Principal Conductor of the Westchester Philharmonic, Mr. Sperling is a multi-faceted artist also known for his work as orchestrator, singer, pianist, violinist, violist, director, and music director.

With MasterVoices, Maestro Sperling has led acclaimed productions of rarely-heard gems as both director and conductor. These include Kurt Weill’s The Firebrand of Florence, Knickerbocker Holiday, The Road of Promise (based on The Eternal Road and subsequently recorded on Navona Records), and the 2018-19 season’s sold — out three — performance run of Lady in the Dark at New York City Center. Other notable productions with the group include Carnegie Hall performances of Stephen Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle, George and Ira Gershwins’ satirical musicals Of Thee I Sing and Let ‘Em Eat Cake, a reconstruction of Victor Herbert’s Babes in Toyland, and Song of Norway; the New York City premieres of David Lang’s battle hymns at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum; and Ricky Ian Gordon’s operas The Grapes of Wrath at Carnegie Hall and 27 at New York City Center.

During the pandemic season of 2020-2021, Maestro Sperling spearheaded a filmed production of Adam Guettel’s Myths and Hymns for MasterVoices, producing and music directing 24 short musical films and directing roughly half of them. This project was nominated for a Drama League Award, and featured over 100 artists collaborating remotely, including Renée Fleming, Take 6, Jennifer Holliday and Julia Bullock. Now that live performances are back, Maestro Sperling is supervising national and international productions of My Fair Lady, The King and I, and Fiddler on the Roof. He has symphonic engagements in the U.S. and Europe and continues to teach at NYU, conducting three different orchestras and training the next generation of Broadway musicians and conductors.

Sperling has conducted multiple concerts for PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center, the American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center, and the Lyrics and Lyricists series at the 92nd Street Y. He conducted Audra McDonald in a double bill of La Voix Humaine and the world premiere of Send: Who Are You? I Love You? at the Houston Grand Opera. He won the 2005 TONY® and Drama Desk Awards for his orchestrations of Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also Music Director.

In addition to his directing work with MasterVoices, Mr. Sperling’s work as a stage director includes the world premieres of four critically acclaimed original musicals Off-Broadway — including The Other Josh Cohen and See What I Wanna See — and a noted production of Lady in the Dark at the Prince Theater in Philadelphia, starring Andrea Marcovicci. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale University, and received the Faculty Prize at The Juilliard School. He made his Broadway stage debut as Wallace Hartley in Titanic and appeared as Steve Allen in the finale of Season Two of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. 

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

NICOLAS ELLIS is Music Director of the Orchestre National de Bretagne, Principal Guest Conductor of Les Violons du Roy, as well as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Orchestre de l’Agora, which he founded in Montreal in 2013.

Known for his versatility in a vast repertoire, Nicolas has distinguished himself with the Orchestre de l’Agora by the conception of concerts with a dramaturgical approach. In collaboration with the Opéra de Montréal, the Agora has presented a number of opera projects in atypical venues in Montreal, including The Turn of the Screw which took place in an industrial warehouse, and L’Enfant et les Sortilèges presented at the Théâtre le Paradoxe, a church converted into a performance space that offers arts training to marginalized youths. In addition, concerts such as Electra and Iphigenia featuring the music of Mozart, Gluck and Haydn with soprano Karina Gauvin, and Bach, le voyage éphémère, used unique lighting effects to create immersive musical experiences for a wide variety of audiences. Alongside the Orchestre de l’Agora, Nicolas won a JUNO award in the Classical Album of the Year, Large Ensemble category for the album Viola Borealis featuring violist Marina Thibeault. Agora also won the Opus Prize for Musical Event of the Year for the Gala de la Terre featuring Mahler’s 3rd symphony, a major fundraising event for several environmental organizations. The eclecticism of Agora’s repertoire as well as the talent and curiosity of its musicians constitute the core of the ensemble’s artistic identity, as demonstrated by its recent critically acclaimed productions of Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea and the contemporary music showcase titled Big Bang. In keeping with the Agora’s outreach mission, Nicolas has set up musical creation projects with teenagers coping with mental illness, educational workshops for children, and a series of monthly concerts for the inmates at the Bordeaux Prison in Montreal.

Nicolas is one of the most active conductors on the Canadian scene. He has been invited to conduct the Vancouver Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the I Musici de Montréal Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. In the 2023-2024 season, he will make his American debut with the San Diego Symphony and will also be conducting Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra de Montréal and Die Fledermaus at the Opéra de Québec, as well opening the 2024 Festival de Lanaudiere with the orchestra de L’Agora in July. The 20242025 season will see Nicolas guest conducting with Tampere Philharmonic, Luxembourg Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Orchestre Métropolitain, and Edmonton Symphony. He will be conducting L’Enfant et les Sortilèges at Opera de Montreal and Magic Flute at Opera de Rennes.

Among the musical encounters and projects that have strongly influenced him are his former position as Artistic Collaborator of the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin from 2018 to 2023, and his role as assistant conductor to Raphaël Pichon and the Ensemble Pygmalion in opera productions at the Opéra comique, the Festival d’Aixen-Provence, and the Salzburg Festival.

Nicolas Ellis is the recipient of the 2017 Fernand Lindsay Career Grant, was named revelation of the year 2018-2019 by RadioCanada and has also been awarded the Prix Goyer Mécénat Musica 2021. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

New Zealand-born violinist GENEVA LEWIS has forged a reputation as a musician of consummate artistry whose performances speak from and to the heart. Lauded for “remarkable mastery of her instrument” (CVNC) and hailed as “clearly one to watch” (Musical America), Geneva is the recipient of a 2022 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant and Grand Prize winner of the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Competition. Additional accolades include Kronberg Academy’s Prince of Hesse Prize, being named a Performance Today Young Artist in Residence, and Musical America’s New Artist of the Month. Most recently, Geneva was named one of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists.

Since her solo debut at age 11 with the Pasadena POPS, Geneva has gone on to perform with orchestras including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, Pensacola Symphony and Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and with conductors including Nicholas McGegan, Edwin Outwater, Michael Feinstein, Sameer Patel, Peter Rubardt, and Dirk Meyer. The 2022-23 season includes performances with the Auckland Philharmonia, North Carolina Symphony, Augusta Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Austin Symphony and Arkansas Symphony. In recital, recent and upcoming highlights include performances at Wigmore Hall, Tippet Rise, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Washington Performing Arts, Merkin Hall, and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts.

Deeply passionate about collaboration, Geneva has had the pleasure of performing with such prominent musicians as Jonathan Biss, Glenn Dicterow, Miriam Fried, Kim Kashkashian, Gidon Kremer, Marcy Rosen, Sir András Schiff, and Mitsuko Uchida, among others. She is also a founding member of the Callisto Trio, Artist-in-Residence at the Da Camera Society in Los Angeles. Callisto received the Bronze Medal at the Fischoff Competition as the youngest group to ever compete in the senior division finals. They were recently invited on the Masters on Tour series of the International Holland Music Sessions and performed at the celebrated Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

An advocate of community engagement and music education, Geneva was selected for the New England Conservatory’s Community Performances and Partnerships Program’s Ensemble Fellowship, through which her string quartet created interactive educational programs for audiences throughout Boston. Her quartet was also chosen for the Virginia Arts Festival Residency, during which they performed and presented masterclasses in elementary, middle, and high schools.

Geneva received her Artist Diploma and Bachelor of Music as the recipient of the Charlotte F. Rabb Presidential Scholarship at the New England Conservatory, studying with Miriam Fried. Prior to that, she studied with Aimée Kreston at the Colburn School of Performing Arts. Past summers have taken her to the Marlboro Music Festival, Ravinia Steans Institute, Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Workshop, International Holland Music Sessions, Taos School of Music and the Heifetz International Music Institute.

Geneva is currently performing on a violin by Zosimo Bergonzi of Cremona, c. 1770 courtesy of Guarneri Hall NFP and Darnton & Hersh Fine Violins, Chicago. 

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Nicholas Buc is an Award-winning composer, conductor and arranger with over 20 years experience in the music industry. He has composed music for film, television and the concert hall, with some of his work being screened at festivals and theatres around Australia, Asia and the US. As the recipient of the prestigious Brian May Scholarship, he completed a Master’s degree in Scoring for Film and Multimedia at New York University, receiving the Elmer Bernstein Award for Film Scoring.

He recently completed work on the new Australian feature film Slant, starring Sigrid Thornton and Pia Miranda, which won Best Australian Feature at Monster Fest 2022. He also scored the Ukrainian documentary Slava, which won Best Short Film at Byron All Shorts Flickerfest 2023.

He has worked with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Chris Botti, Amanda Palmer, Ben Folds and Australian pop sensation Tina Arena. He has written arrangements for Birds of Tokyo, Missy Higgins and Vera Blue as well as working on Junior MasterChef, The Voice Australia and the 2021 AFL Grand Final.

Nicholas is highly sought after as a conductor for live film concerts, having conducted the world premieres of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Lion King (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017), Shrek 2 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

He is also the only person in the world to have conducted all three original Star Wars films in concert…in one day! 

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Having composed the music for more than 130 film and television productions, JAMES HORNER was among the world’s most prolific and beloved film composers. He earned two ACADEMY® Awards and two GOLDEN GLOBE® Awards, eight additional ACADEMY® Award nominations, five additional GOLDEN GLOBE® nominations, and he won six GRAMMY® awards. Horner’s Titanic soundtrack completed a record-breaking run of 16 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, and it remains the largest selling instrumental score album in history, having sold more than 27 million copies worldwide.

Known for his stylistic diversity, his other film credits include Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind, Glory, The Perfect Storm, Aliens, Legends of the Fall, Field of Dreams, The Mask of Zorro, Clear and Present Danger, Courage Under Fire, The Missing, Patriot Games, Jumanji, An American Tail, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Ransom, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Land Before Time, Willow, The Rocketeer, Apocalypto, Cocoon, Gorky Park, and Star Treks II and III. His final feature film projects were director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Wolf Totem, Patricia Riggen’s The 33, and Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw

Born in Los Angeles in 1953, Horner spent his formative years in London where he attended the Royal College of Music. His initial interest was avant-garde classical music. Returning to California, Horner continued his education at USC, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Composition, and UCLA, where he earned a Doctorate in Music Composition and Theory. In 1980, Horner was approached by the American Film Institute to score a short film, after which he left the academic world and began working for Roger Corman at New World Pictures. There, he became acquainted with a number of young directors including Ron Howard, for whom he would later score such films as Willow, Cocoon, and Apollo 13 among many others. Also during his time at New World, Horner met a young cameraman named James Cameron, with whom he would later collaborate on Aliens, Avatar, and Titanic. Horner went on to collaborate with many of Hollywood’s most noted filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, William Friedkin, Mel Gibson, Oliver Stone, and Francis Ford Coppola.

Horner likened his approach to composing to that of a painter, where the film serves as the canvas and musical color is used to describe and support the film’s emotional dynamics. An accomplished conductor, Horner preferred to conduct his scores directly to picture and without the use of click tracks. He also composed several concert works including A Forest Passage, commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra, Pas de Deux, a double concerto for violin and cello, and Collage: A Concerto for Four Horns and Orchestra, premiered by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in March of 2015.

Tragically, Horner died in 2015 when the single-engine aircraft he was piloting crashed in a remote area of northern Ventura County. He was 61 years old. Horner is survived by his wife, Sara, and his daughter Emily. He left behind a legacy of some of the most influential and acclaimed music in the history of cinema. 

JEWEL & MELISSA

ETHERIDGE

PROGRAM

To be announced from the stage

Approximate program length: 3 hours (includes one, 20-minute intermission)

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JEWEL is a multi-platinum singer-songwriter, visual artist, and New York Times best selling author. As a lived experience expert and pioneer in the mental health space, Jewel is passionate about democratizing wellness, equal rights, and inspiring at-risk youth with a whole human approach to education.

Please note: the San Diego Symphony does not appear on this concert.

Throughout her career Jewel has been nominated 33 times for several music awards from prestigious organizations including The GRAMMY®’s, American Music Awards, MTV Awards, VH1 Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and the Country Music Awards. She has won 21 times for various categories such as Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Favorite Female Artist and more.

Heralded by the New York Times as “One of the best singer-songwriters since Joni Mitchell,” Jewel has earned four GRAMMY® Award nominations and has sold over 30 million albums. Jewel credits her great mentors Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who took the time to encourage her as a young artist. The producer of THE VOICE Mark Burnett calls Jewel “One of the greatest singer-songwriters in history.”

Jewel was on the cover of TIME Magazine and Rolling Stone. She performed on Saturday Night Live, the Super Bowl, NBA Finals and for the Pope and President of the United States. She has experimented with several genres over her career with top hits in Folk, Pop, Club, Country, Standards, Children’s and Holiday music. Jewel was chosen to finish Johnny Cash’s half written songs for a posthumous CD created by Cash’s son, John Carter Cash. Recently, in the musical extension to her debut art experience, Jewel released, The Portal: A Meditative Journey.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 GRAMMY® Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a GRAMMY® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second GRAMMY® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singers for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy® Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 GRAMMY® telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.

On October 7, 2016 Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014’s critically lauded This Is M.E. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. She followed that up with the release of The Medicine Show in April, 2019. For The Medicine Show, Melissa reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks and sounds as rousing as ever, bringing a new level of artistry to her 15th studio recording. The Medicine Show deals with universal themes of renewal, reconciliation, reckoning, compassion and, most profoundly, healing.

In June of 2020, Etheridge launched her own live streaming subscription and single ticket concert platform, Etheridge TV and has done over 200 live streams in 2020. On September 17, 2021, Melissa released a new album called One Way Out. The 9-track album is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s that never made the cut….until now! The time is finally right, and fans will finally get a deeper glimpse to who Melissa was then. October 2022 saw Melissa’s return to the theatre with her one woman show, My Window — A Journey Through Life The critically acclaimed, sold-out run premiered at New World Stages on October 13 and opened at Circle In the Square Theatre on Broadway in September 2023. 

Hershey Felder’s newest musical play will feature him in the role of composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff alongside British-Italian actor Jonathan Silvestri in the role of Tsar Nicholas II. Having safely left Russia during the 1917 revolution, Rachmaninoff eventually made his home in Beverly Hills, but always longed for the Tsarist Russia that he knew and loved as a young man. Featuring Rachmaninoff’s most beloved compositions, this promises to be another mystical musical journey in the Hershey Felder style that patrons have come to know and love. Book, Music & Lyrics by Jonathan Larson

Directed and Choreographed by Katie Banville

Musical Direction by Dr. Randi Rudolph

July 3 – August 4

Before he electrified the world with Rent, Jonathan Larson was a young man struggling to make his mark in the theater. While he waits tables and seeks his big break, the pressure to give it all up grows as Jon approaches his 30th birthday. Will he sell out to keep the lights on? Will he lose the love of his life? Will he finally write the soaring song that can change everything? And if he does, will anyone be there to see it? Set in 1990 and scored by the music that redefined a genre, tick, tick… BOOM! cracks open the ticking-time-bomb world of creating theater to celebrate the power of finding your voice and holding on to a dream.

Does chasing the dream have an expiration date?

arts to collaborate across their different art forms. Later in the festival, the Synergy Initiative will feature the world premiere of a performance by pianist Conrad Tao and tap-dancer Caleb Teicher; and the intersection of jazz and technology featuring jazz pianist Dan

Tepfer. Tepfer’s Natural Machines program explores the intersection between natural and mechanical processes, as he improvises at the piano and interacts in real time with computer-written programs.

While almost all the SummerFest concerts take place in The Conrad’s Baker-Baum Concert Hall,

Clockwise from top left: Brandee Younger; The Conrad’s Baker-Baum Concert Hall; VOCES8; Dan Tepfer.

Tepfer will give two shows on Aug. 15 in the venue’s more intimate cabaret-style space, The JAI. That is also the setting for two shows featuring jazz harp phenom Brandee Younger and her trio, who will perform there on Aug. 8.

“For the past few years, we’ve continued

to expand the breadth of festival programming by incorporating two evenings of Jazz @ The JAI and our Synergy Series, which has provided many avenues for artistic expression outside of our standard performances,” adds Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal. “This series invites top creators

of music, dance, spoken word and visual arts to collaborate across their different art forms; and produce performances that inspire our audiences in unexpected and powerful ways.”

Barnatan’s programming for the various concerts ranges widely, from early music in “Baroque

Fantasia” (works by Vivaldi, Purcell, Telemann and Rebel) on Aug. 2; to a selection of compositions written in, or influenced by, our home state in “California Dreamin’” on Aug. 17. In addition to performing and conducting in several concerts, Thomas Adès will do a “Takeover” of The BakerBaum Concert Hall on Aug. 1, curating an evening that showcases him as composer, teacher, pianist and conductor of works by Francisco Coll and De Falla in addition to his own “Forgotten Dances.”

SummerFest is known for having a festive vibe, and that will continue with the return of Midweek Masterworks on Wednesdays. These are shorter, intermission-less concerts that Barnatan says contextualize cornerstones of the repertoire; and are followed by a complimentary drink for ticket holders in The Conrad’s Wu Tsai QRT. yrd. The musicians often come outside to mingle and raise a glass with patrons. Midweek Masterworks this summer will feature a dramatic reading from the Tony Award-winning play Amadeus, along with a performance of Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 for Winds “Gran Partita;” a program of alternating

works by Mozart and contemporary composer Arvo Pärt; “Notes on a Scandal,” featuring works by Gesualdo, Debussy, and Franck; and “Instrumental Stories,” with works by Bartók, Michi Wiancko, and Brahms.

“My favorite part about planning SummerFest is the creative puzzle of curating the festival’s program,” says Barnatan. “I love envisioning how different pieces and performances will come together to create a cohesive and compelling artistic journey. It’s incredibly satisfying to see these ideas come to life on stage, knowing that they will resonate with both the musicians and the audience.”

This year sees the return of SummerFest favorites James Ehnes, Augustin Hadelich, Stefan Jackiw, Alexi Kenney, Tessa Lark, Blake Pouliot,

Masumi Per Rostad, Jay Campbell, Sterling Elliott, Alisa Weilerstein, Joyce Yang, Anthony McGill, and Kronos Quartet’s Paul Wiancko—among many more. Making their SummerFest debuts are conductors Jonathan Cohen and Ludovic Morlot, the Brandee Younger Trio, Dan Tepfer, The Paper Cinema, and the acclaimed vocal group VOCES8—among others. In fact, Adès’ influence can be felt in the greaterthan-usual number of artists from the UK who will perform at SummerFest this year—including the debut of Scottish guitar sensation Sean Shibe. Among other performances, Shibe will give the U.S. premiere of Adès’ “Forgotten Dances.”

“I’m especially excited about Conrad Tao’s Counterpoint II event, part of the Synergy Initiative, which will be a new program created by Conrad on piano and tap dancer extraordinaire Caleb Teicher, fusing contemporary selections with beautifully crafted classical standard,” Rosenthal says. “I’m also looking forward to having the best wind players in the world here with us for Mozart’s ‘Gran Partita.’”

“SummerFest offers a unique blend of artistic excellence, a supportive

and intimate atmosphere, and the stunning setting of La Jolla. Very few musicians can resist playing concerts in a world-class hall, alongside worldclass colleagues—when combined with an environment that feels like a home away from home, and also happens to include stunning beaches and perfect weather,” Barnatan says. “The deep connections and shared passion for music create a magnetic pull that keeps them returning to join us year after year.

“Arriving in La Jolla and reuniting with the artists is always a joyous occasion. There’s a sense of excitement and anticipation as we start rehearsals, and the energy is palpable. Working in The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, which we’ve come to know intimately, is a big part of that. But it’s mostly about the musicians and the audience coming back together, like coming home for the holidays with friends and family that you really enjoy spending time with. The staff of the festival is the best in the business and make it incredibly inspiring to collaborate in such a dynamic and supportive environment.”

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees . . . The new Performances program platform, accessed on any digital device, is among the more enduring innovations to have come out of the pandemic. The platform provides the programs for 20 Southern California performing-arts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Ahmanson Theatre to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.

The touchless platform provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates and numerous other

arts-centric features. Audiences receive a link and a code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too.

Screens go dark when curtains go up and return when house lights come back on. Updates—such as repertory changes, understudy substitutions and significant new donations—can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary. Other features include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.
