Get ready for an interlude of riotous laughter as Jefferson McDonald and Matthew McGloin take us on a musical comedic journey about their would-be careers as concert pianists. The talented duo trade stories about piano lessons, pushy parents, and eccentric teachers while playing everything from Bach to Billy Joel. This wildly popular show not only hits all the right notes, it tickles the ivories and your funny bone too.

According to the legendary Billie Holiday, “Blues is to jazz what yeast is to bread.” With 26 glorious, hot, torchy songs fueling this revue, a powerful cast of singers plumb the innermost reaches of their hearts, sharing the heartbreak and humor of life and the indomitable will to do more than survive. You’ll hear such favorites as “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” and “Wasted Life Blues.” Whether you’re a novice or die-hard jazz fan, prepare yourself for a thrilling evening you won’t soon forget.

Three tweaked versions of A Christmas Carol land in San Diego this year to remind you of the true meaning of Christmas. At The Old Globe Theatre (theoldglobe.org), doing double duty with the always-popular family musical, Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (running through Dec. 31), is a second holiday show: Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show, which received its West Coast premiere in 2019. Written by Gordon

Greenberg and Steve Rosen, and directed by Greenberg, the familyfriendly comedy, set in San Diego circa 1919, is a sly, fast-paced parody of the Dickens play that still includes all the parts audiences love best— including the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future. There’s a local twist: Scrooge is now a British émigré who moves to San Diego from England to seek his fortune at the PanamaCalifornia Exhibition.

That way the entire play can be set in our very own Balboa Park and surrounding communities, and include many local jokes and references in the script. (And keep an eye out for some unusu ally “wintery” San Diego weather during the show.) Intrigued? Performances run through Dec. 24.

At Cygnet Theatre (cygnettheatre.com) in Old Town—and back for its eighth season—this production of A Christmas Carol gets a musical

makeover by artistic director Sean Murray— featuring original music by Billy Thompson, live sound effects, and even puppets. The inexhaust ible Murray is also direct ing, and this year is even stepping into the lead role of Scrooge for the first time. See him pull off this tour de force in performances staged at Old Town Theatre, through Dec. 24.

BARRY

This year Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! celebrates a milestone: its 25th holiday season at The Old Globe. That’s an astonishing run by any measure: presidents and potentates have come and gone, but The Grinch endures. Children who were featured in our company two decades ago are now adults with kids of their own. And new generations of theatregoers continue to settle into our seats for their first dose of Seussian sweetness and magic.

All of us at The Old Globe are doing a lot of thinking about this amazing show’s silver anniversary. We think about how much the world has changed since its first year, and how much The Grinch has given us an anchor of constancy and love throughout. We think about how the Globe has grown in a quarter century: three sizes, just like the Grinch’s heart, and thanks in no small part to him! Mostly, though, we think about the impact this show has made on hundreds of thousands of San Diegans. This sweet story has become central to how our city celebrates the holiday season, and we are simultaneously astonished and delighted that this is so. We’ve planned some special events to surround this 25th year, all of which are aimed at commemorating not us, but instead Dr. Seuss. He conferred magic on all of us through this story. His beautiful imagination, as interpreted 25 years ago by the creators of this musical, is what has been so meaningful for so many over such a long period of time. The Old Globe has merely been the vessel. We salute Dr. Seuss and his legacy, and we thank Dr. Seuss Enterprises and its visionary CEO Susan Brandt for a productive and happy partnership that we hope will go on for another 25 years, and then some.

The Grinch is on our stage thanks to the generosity of Audrey Geisel, one of the Globe’s most valued friends. I had the special privilege of getting to know Audrey in the last years of her life. I’d visit her office in La Jolla, which was the very room in which her late husband Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss himself, wrote and drew the books that have become cherished by children worldwide. It was a true thrill to be there, and a special delight to be able to thank Audrey in person for her ongoing support. Now it is an honor to memorialize her here by noting that her ongoing largess will sustain and stabilize this institution for generations to come. She changed the Globe in her lifetime by setting this production in motion, and in her death she supports us through a powerful legacy.

For 10 of these 25 years I have had this happy and spectacular (and big and green and hairy) tradition so close to the heart of my professional and personal lives. In The Grinch I see the ways that the theatre really does its work. This art form brings strangers together to create one audience, one community. It shows us great and moving stories like this one: a classic fable about healing and family and love and the balm that is the holiday spirit. And, magically, it makes us feel better.

On behalf of the Board, artists, and staff of The Old Globe, I wish you a joyous holiday season. And I thank you for helping us deliver to San Diego 25 extraordinary years of theatre magic.

Thanks for coming. Enjoy the show.

The Old Globe has presented the musical Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! for 25 years, but this beloved story has been around for much longer. Learn all about the twists and turns the story has taken over the years to reach you onstage today!

1948: Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) moves to La Jolla, California.

1966: The animated Grinch television adaptation airs. The cartoon features the voice of Boris Karloff and has been a Christmas classic ever since.

1984: Dr. Seuss is awarded a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation. He was the first (and still only) person to receive this prestigious honor for writing children’s books.

1957: The book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is published. Dr. Seuss was 53 years old when the book was published, the same age as The Grinch!

1977: A television prequel called Halloween Is Grinch Night airs.

P6 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE THE PLAY

1998: The first production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! premieres at The Old Globe. This production starred a young Vanessa Hudgens (of High School Musical fame) as Cindy-Lou Who!

2006: The Grinch opens on Broadway. The same year, The Old Globe did a workshop of the show where they introduced a new shopping number, “It‘s the Thought That Counts.” Both Broadway and San Diego tried out different shopping numbers. The San Diego version was considered the better song and was added to the Broadway show in 2007.

A new Grinch costume makes its debut. It’s made out eight pounds of dyed green yak hair!

2006: The first Old Globe Grinchmas Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on the Globe’s Copley Plaza. This year marks our 17th annual tree lighting, which delights thou sands of San Diegans every year.

2011: The first sensoryfriendly production of the show is presented.

2003: The incredibly popular song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” from the animated cartoon is added to the musical. Initially, the song was used as Old Max’s introduction song.

2007: The popular song “Fah Who Foraze” from the animated cartoon is added to the show.

2020: An audio version of the show is broadcast in conjunction with KPBS Radio.

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the theatres, The Old Globe kept the spirit of Christmas alive through quarantine. The radio production featured beloved and long-running Grinch veterans, actors new to the show, and even a former Who kid (Charlotte Mary Wen) returning all grown up in the role of Mama Who.

arts engagement year in

review

We in the Arts Engagement Department are wrapping up a fantastic year of free community programming across the county while simultaneously gearing up for a new, adventurous year of making theatre matter to even more people in 2023. Join me in taking a moment to celebrate some significant developments in the world of arts engagement throughout 2022:

In January, School in the Park, our long-running program in partnership with Wilson Middle School and Rosa Parks Elementary School, continued in person, expanding to include new students from Clark Middle School.

February saw the return of AXIS, our free plaza programming series. We were thrilled to present the first-ever Lunar New Year celebration to over 1,000 delighted audience members.

Come April, we hosted the return of the Celebrating Community Voices night in the Powers New Voices Festival, presenting the work of SoulKiss Theatre, which developed plays through our Community Voices playwriting workshop.

In May, the Free Student Matinee program returned to in-person field trips and pre-show workshop school visits. Students were enchanted to attend the matinee performance of Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ and meet cast members after the performance. We also were honored to announce our binational partnership with Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) on May 31 to promote and increase accessibility to the performing arts in the border region.

This led us to our Globe for All Tour of Mala in June, presented in Spanish and English in San Diego and Tijuana. Hundreds of audience members witnessed the profoundly moving solo performance on local community stages!

Our summer was jam-packed with the first-ever in-person Theatre Design Studio, where students worked directly with Globe artisans and production personnel to learn the skills and techniques involved in technical theatre. We also hosted the return of Summer Shakespeare Studio on location at Hoover High School. Students from all over San Diego delved deeply into the creative exploration and performance of Henry V

September brought a slew of fall programs to our campus and communities: a new year of the expanded School in the Park, adult workshops across San Diego, new student matinees, and the beloved return of our Docent Tour program. Welcome back, Docents!

October and November are our busy season. Our Globe for All Tour of Henry V, directed by Johanna McKeon, visited communities from Oceanside to Tijuana and everywhere in between. And our Día de Muertos coLAB program originated a new community-centered performance piece devised with bilingual Globe artists.

And here we are in December, and I hardly cracked the surface of everything accomplished in 2022! Whew! Our team may be evolving (we miss our recently departed leader Freedome Bradley-Ballentine!), but we will continue to passionately charge forward in delivering thrilling programming to our beloved community. We love you, see you next year! 

Everyone makes mistakes - it’s human nature. But what happens when a mistake has dire life-changing consequences? “Eight years ago, I made a terrible mistake that ultimately led to my incarceration.” Now on parole, Jen came to the stark realization, “Being [justice impacted] makes it harder to get a job.” This is especially challenging to Jen as she has always been an enterprising young woman, gaining certi cations to work in many areas, including as a dental hygienist and a dog trainer.

When she learned about Kitchens for Good, Jen hadn’t considered cooking as a career, but she was adamant about creating a better future for herself. The Culinary Apprenticeship program provided a way for her to do that. With its skills training and relationships with Employer Partners throughout San Diego, Jen wouldn’t be hamstrung by background checks and judgement, and would be able to pursue a sustainable career in the hospitality industry. “I knew I needed to go out on a limb to get this training, because otherwise, I had no idea how I was going to secure employment given my status.” Since joining the Kitchens for Good program, Jen has not only gotten her con dence back, but also discovered a passion for cooking. “I see myself being in this industry for a very long time. Thank you so much Kitchens for Good.”

Your support enables us to offer new life opportunities to individuals like Jen. For the 10 weeks of skills training, here’s what your donation can provide for an Apprentice: $50 = Classroom Supplies $125 = Professional Uniforms $250 = Bus Passes $500 = Food for Cooking/Baking Classes Text KITCHENS to 24365 to donate today! minds behind Kindred—South Park’s den of highdesign cocktails, vegan fare and deathmetal tunes—dream up a new bar, you just know it’s going to be weird in the coolest way. And Mothership delivers. The “tropical space adventure” feels like an ‘80s rocket ship voyage to an alien planet—complete with shooting stars and out-of-this-world drinks. The “Base Camp Protocol of Food & Drink” (i.e., the menu) features astronomical libations named Forbidden Frequency and Away Mission; plus creative vegan dishes with simple names like “Noodle” and “Potato.” 2310 30th St., South Park, 619.630.2187

Ever heard of a genever cocktail bar? Be Saha Hospitality Group (Tahona, Oculto 477, Wormwood) brings us San Diego’s first. Botanica is both a cocktail bar and gallery showcasing modern art and NFT digital art. Explore the history and flavors of genever—the precursor to gin and one of Europe’s oldest distilled spirits. Botanica serves it up in flutes (traditionally sipped with your hands behind your back, if you dare); and in the form of creative cocktails. Guests can also sample other gins and botanical spirits; plus gourmet plates by executive chef Tiffany Tran. 3139 University Ave., North Park, 619.310.6370

The owners of The Rose in South Park have debuted a new concept in North Park, and it’s downright adorable. Inspired by Mabel, co-owner Chelsea Coleman’s beloved dog (whose sweet portraits dot the walls), Mabel’s Gone Fishing is a one part bistro, spotlighting coastal fare from the Iberian Peninsula; and one part cocktail bar, devoted mainly to small-batch gins and wines sourced from Spain and Portugal. Feast on oysters and cured halibut; pintxo-style snacks such as smoked mackerel toast; shareable plates like sword fish schnitzel, kampachi col lar, clams ‘n’ ham with grilled sourdough, and blistered Padron peppers with goat cheese; and whipped rice pudding with lemon-verbena meringue and passionfruit sorbet for dessert. To drink: a selection of G&Ts, martinis and Mediterranean-inspired cocktails with fun names— such as the Spanish Cobbler, Gothic Quarter, La Barce loneta and the signature Mabel’s Negroni. 3770 30th St., North Park, 619.228.9851

In this holi day version, the legendary Francis, Jinx, Smudge and Sparky at first aren’t really sure why they’ve been brought back to Earth for another posthumous performance.
