HELPING NATURE LIVE LARGE. SINCE 1874.

Nearly 150 years ago, a group of naturalists got together to study and share their love of this amazing place we call home. They wanted to learn more about nature and help others enjoy it more. It’s still what we do every day. In the field, and in the Museum. Your support keeps The Nat thriving. Which keeps nature thriving, too.

Help preserve, protect, and nurture nature in our region for the next 150 years. Please scan the QR code to support The Nat today.

Three Local Theaters Present Different Takes on A Christmas Carol by

DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, there are some warhorses you can rely on being presented by your local performing arts groups. The Nutcracker, for example, is a mainstay of ballet companies that often pays the bills for the rest of the year. Here in San Diego, Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! has become

a reliable family-friendly hit at The Old Globe. And of course, many theater companies add Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to their repertoires around this time.

This year, though, three of our leading local theater companies are each approaching the latter holiday classic in their own ways. Cygnet Theatre is presenting its own musical adaptation. The Old Globe offers a one-man show, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story

“Every time I do it, hear it, watch it, I experience something new. As one grows old with it, different themes and characters sing out as if hidden all this time, waiting for you to catch up to them.”— Sean Murray

Director, Sean Murray, who also directs and stars in the show, Cygnet Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, Nov. 29-Dec. 24, is adapted from the original and features original music by Billy Thompson. Audiences will also enjoy creative stagecraft, puppetry and live sound effects.

“I have been a fanatical fan of the book for so many years,” Murray says. “Every time I do it, hear it, watch it, I experience something new. As one grows old with it, different themes and characters sing out as if hidden all this time, waiting for you to catch up to them. There are discoveries to be made /CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

FROM BARRY

This year Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! celebrates its 27th holiday season at The Old Globe. That’s an astonishing run by any measure: presidents and potentates have come and gone, but The Grinch endures. Children who were featured in our company two decades ago are now adults with kids of their own. And new generations of theatregoers continue to settle into our seats for their first dose of Seussian sweetness and magic.

All of us at The Old Globe are doing a lot of thinking about this amazing show’s run. We think about how much the world has changed since its first year, and how much The Grinch has given us an anchor of constancy and love throughout. We think about how the Globe has grown since the beginning in 1998: three sizes, just like the Grinch’s heart, and thanks in no small part to him! Mostly, though, we think about the impact this show has made on hundreds of thousands of San Diegans. This sweet story has become central to how our city celebrates the holiday season, and we are simultaneously astonished and delighted that this is so. But it’s been Dr. Seuss who has conferred magic on all of us through this story. His beautiful imagination, as interpreted by the creators of this musical, is what has been so meaningful for so many over such a long period of time. The Old Globe has merely been the vessel. We salute Dr. Seuss and his legacy, and we thank Dr. Seuss Enterprises and its visionary CEO and president Susan Brandt for a productive and happy partnership that we hope flourish for many, many more years.

The Grinch is on our stage thanks to the generosity of Audrey Geisel, one of the Globe’s most valued friends. I had the special privilege of getting to know Audrey in the last years of her life. I’d visit her office in La Jolla, which was the very room in which her late husband Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss himself, wrote and drew the books that have become cherished by children worldwide. It was a true thrill to be there, and a special delight to be able to thank Audrey in person for her ongoing support. Now it is an honor to memorialize her here by noting that her ongoing largess will sustain and stabilize this institution for generations to come. She changed the Globe in her lifetime by setting this production in motion, and in her death she supports us through a powerful legacy.

I’m blessed that my work at the Globe puts me in yearly contact with this happy and spectacular (and big and green and hairy) tradition. In The Grinch I see the ways that the art form of theatre really does its work. Theatre brings strangers together to create one audience, one community. It shows us great and moving stories like this one: a classic fable about healing and family and love and the balm that is the holiday spirit. And, magically, it makes us feel better.

On behalf of the Board, artists, and staff of The Old Globe, I wish you a joyous holiday season. And I thank you for helping us deliver to San Diego 27 extraordinary years of theatre magic.

Thanks for coming. Enjoy the show.

James Vásquez has directed Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! every year since 2009, and was a cast member even before that. That’s a long time in Who-ville! These are 10 of his favorite stories and factoids from his time with San Diego’s favorite holiday musical.

Getting “Ready”

We have a phrase in rehearsal when getting ready to start a runthrough of a song or moment. I will say, “Ready, steady,” and all the kids respond back with “ready, steady, freddy, spaghetti....”

A new word gets added every year. I think our response is up to about 17 words at this point. I can’t remember them, but somehow the kids do, and it gets passed down year after year.

Onstage Mishaps, Part 1

A stage manager’s nightmare, but during one show the automation malfunctioned and the Who-ville house just starting spinning. I was playing Grandpa Who at the time. I grabbed Eileen Bowman, who was playing Grandma, and we dodged the house and ran offstage. (It wasn’t really that dramatic—but it is a funny memory.)

A Certain Sparkle

John Lee Beatty’s set always shines—but it’s also literal. There’s glitter on the set pieces, and a new coat of glitter is added every year when the sets are brought out of storage. It helps make everything look bright and new for another season.

Onstage Mishaps, Part 2

Years ago we had a terrible storm in San Diego. At the end of the show when it “snows,” all of the Whos stage left got a little more than they bargained for. There was a tiny leak in the roof above, and we started feeling the rain onstage. And with the soap bubbles used as snow, some of it started to foam up on us.

Whatchama-who Weekend

We have a whole weekend dedicated to staging and perfecting “Whatchama-who.” Starting with “no noise, no toys” and slowly adding toys and building up to noise. We also have a Who-ville secret language surrounding “Whatchama-who.”

And Speaking of Toys…

For a long time, there were a bunch of little hidden toys throughout the set. All black-and-white toys: a stuffed orca, a panda bear, a Stormtrooper. Onstage, we can see them. But from the audience, they blend right into the rest of the world.

Who’s Who in Who-ville

We don’t list these names in the program, but everyone in the Who ensemble has a unique name we use, all derived from the look of their costume. For example, Scallop has a dress with curved, scalloped edges, and Palm Springs’ shirt looks like he could be on vacation. Can you guess which characters are named Lady Bug, Phyllis, and Bootsie?

It’s Tough Being a Grinch

The Grinch costume can be hot and heavy. The green hair alone on the costume weighs eight pounds! Our actors make it look easy, but as soon as The Grinch gets offstage, you can usually find him sitting right in front of a fan with a large water bottle nearby.

A Long Way Down

The Grinch elevator, used to help The Grinch slide down the red proscenium, was only installed about seven years ago. Until that point, The Grinch held on tightly and wiggled his way down the wall.

Grinchy Legacy

One of the nice things about this show running for so many years is that people have been with it for a long time. So at the closing party each year, we give badges out for folks who have been with the show for 5, 10, 15, 20 years. We continued this during the pandemic by mailing badges to everyone involved in the radio version. We even have an unofficial Grinch Hall of Fame!

a rts engageme n t a banner year for

Looking at the year in review, I see fresh vision aligned with excellence in programming, which provided magical, surprising, and impactful experiences for our many friends and partners. Here is just a glimpse into our year in Arts Engagement:

globe for all

Globe for All brings an abbreviated adaptation of a Shakespeare play to audiences that may have never interacted with Shakespeare or a live theatrical event, and is performed in their neighborhoods. Our play this year was As You Like It, and it delighted community members from Oceanside to Tijuana.

In 2024, Globe for All grew! Our beloved GFA went from a three-week tour to now being on the road for four weeks. We typically perform in churches, libraries, schools, correctional facilities, and community centers. This year we added new partners like TERI Campus of Life, which serves our neurodiverse friends in North County, as well as several new high schools and learning centers.

camp studio

Camp Studio made its premiere at the Old Globe serving nearly 60 students in second through eighth grades. This was the first camp held at The Old Globe for elementary and middle schoolaged children in over 20 years! Our camp attracted students from all over the region and we had a blast exploring classes like acting, puppetry and devised theatre, dance, and music. We are excited to add this program to our department’s mission.

H6 was a major milestone moment for our theatre. Thousands of San Diegans participated with some form of engagement that was facilitated by way of workshops, classes, walk-on opportunities, being filmed and incorporated into the play, or simply taking a moment to build a rose with us on the plaza. We did in fact make history with our partners and we are excited to see how this experience shaped our future.

Two of our Arts Engagement team members were selected to present their workshop titled, Reflecting Shakespeare: a Model for Building Performance and Communities in Vulnerable Populations at the International Teaching Artist Conference in New Zealand. We were thrilled to be able to represent The Old Globe and the important work facilitated by our rehabilitative program on an international stage!

The coast-hugging Pacific Surfliner offers 11 round trips daily between SoCal’s major performing-arts hubs by BENJAMIN EPSTEIN

Live in San Diego and want to see Gustavo Dudamel lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall before he takes over at the New York Philharmonic—but don’t want to face five or more hours driving there and back? Not to mention parking and gas?

Live in Los Angeles and want to experience San Diego’s newly renovated Jacobs Music Center or spectacular on-thewater Rady Shell—both of them homes of the San Diego Symphony? Ditto the driving? Readers of Performances Magazine in both cities might consider Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner—and relax. Listen to music. Read or listen to a book. Watch a movie on your phone. Have a glass of wine. Enjoy the ocean views.

Not surprisingly, the coasthugging Surfliner train represents the second busiest

intercity passenger rail corridor in the U.S. There are 11 round trips daily between San Diego and Los Angeles.

Seating can be Unreserved Coach or

reserved and roomier Business Class upstairs. The Market Cafe offers sandwiches, salads, snacks and sweets; plus craft beer, California wines and cocktails.

Surfliner stops include San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot and L.A.’s Union Station, Spanish Baroque and Mission Moderne masterpieces, respectively. Both are very

near those cities’ major performing-arts venues.

Station in downtown Los Angeles; the Los Angeles Music Center is minutes by Uber/Lyft from the station entrance.

Music Center venues include Walt Disney Concert Hall, home of the L.A. Phil and L.A. Master Chorale; the Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum, premiere destinations for L.A. theater; and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, venue for L.A. Opera and the center’s dance series.

You can stay directly opposite the Frank Gehrydesigned Disney Hall, with its asymmetric sweeping curves, at the Conrad

An arts anchor for the Grand itself is on tap for 2025: Refik Anadol

Accommodations at the 305-room luxury Conrad hotel feature floor-to-ceiling windows; there’s a new spa and a rooftop pool and bar with downtown views.

On-property dining: Celebrity chef José Andrés presents the cuisine of his native Spain through a California lens at San Laurel; cocktails are superb. Its terrace directly overlooks Disney Hall.

Off-property: Beautiful new Camélia is a FrenchJapanese bistro in downtown’s Arts District; its owners—chef and beverage director, respectively—are highly regarded for their izakaya and sake bar in nearby Echo Park.

Charismatic music director Rafael Payare leads the orchestra at the Jacobs Music Center downtown, recently reopened following a $125 million renovation; and the spectacular outdoor Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, opposite historical Coronado.

The Jacobs Center began life as the Fox Theatre movie palace in 1929. The orchestra took it over, and extensively renovated it, 40 years ago. Its elaborate decor remains; remarkably, rising above it since 1989 is late-modernist Symphony Towers, second tallest skyscraper in San Diego.

The center’s recent revitalization adds a tunable acoustic canopy, state-of-the-art digital sound and lighting, performance configuration including a choral terrace and embedded Robert Morton pneumatic pipe organ, new seating and finishes, restored archi-

tectural details, and enhanced amenities.

The center is a fiveminute walk from the Alma boutique hotel, newly added to Marriott Bonvoy’s Tribute Portfolio. Alma’s design celebrates the region’s Mexican heritage, street culture and tattoo-inspired art.

Notable among some 200 accommodations are four penthouse suites with differing floor-toceiling views of the Pacific Ocean, Coronado and downtown.

On property dining: The Café offers all meals daily; dinner highlights are as diverse as Japanesepurple-potato patatas bravas, braised-lamb rigatoni, and swordfish with coconut forbidden rice.

Off-property: Consider Asian-inspired steakhouse Animae from chefs Brian Malarkey and Tara Monsod; it's newly Michelin-listed and just around the corner from Santa Fe Depot.

whenever one dives into its pages or sits down to watch an interpretation of it on film or on stage. Therefore, when I adapted the book, I passionately committed to bring the experience of the show to the stage as written by Mr. Dickens, himself.”

Murray says he hasn’t added anything to A Christmas Carol, but rather reduced it to the essentials. “It is a magical story that covers so much ground, travels through time, ghosts, celebrations of family, homey Christmas dinners, darkness and light. My feeling is that the best version is the one that happens in one’s mind while reading or listening to it. The audience visualizes the special effects to their likings. So, we present the story in a highly theatrical way that welcomes the audiences’ imaginations to fill in the visuals through the use of puppetry, music, live sound effects, and a storytelling approach that invites the audience to participate with us in reexploring this story.

“I let Dickens do the work, and try to get out of his way and just support him with a staging that invites all to rehear and rediscover why this story is so universal. Not as many people have read

the book as one might think; or their opinions may be based upon film versions and other interpretations. But ours goes back to the source at every level, and people new to our production are surprised to hear it as if completely new to them.”

At The Old Globe, A Christmas Carol will be pared down in a different way: as a oneperson show. Written by Jefferson Mays, Susan Lyons and Michael Arden, and directed by the Globe’s Barry Edelstein, A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story Told by Jefferson Mays sees Mays return to the Globe Dec. 12-22, after his San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award–winning 2013 performance

“I think A Christmas Carol is the secondgreatest Christmas story ever told,” Mays says. “Its themes of family, loss, loneliness, poverty, kindness, community, charity, mortality and love are, of course, timeless; and it’s hard to find anything to match it as a tale of personal transformation and redemption. Full of indelible characters who’ve independently impressed themselves upon our collective consciousness, it is shot through with Dickens’ exuberant energy, humor, sense of the grotesque, compassion and social

Mays points out his solo show will be performed with minimal technical support, and in the round. “I hope it will be like hearing a tale told around a fireside after dinner,” he says. “I will let Dickens’ brilliant words drive and shape the evening, and trust that the most wonderful special effects will be produced in the imaginations of the audience. I hope that this will be an evening which reduces (and perhaps ultimately expands) theater in its purest form: an actor, an engaged, imaginative audience, and a cracking good yarn.”

Your Local Theater Presents: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Again receives its world premiere at the Playhouse Nov. 19-Dec. 15.

“A Christmas Carol is one of the great stories about change—that people can change, that awful people can change into something new, something better,” says Waters. “It’s about transformation, and theater at its most essential is about transformation. Anna’s play is an entirely new play about the actors and stage managers who make this much beloved holiday tradition year after year. [It’s] both satire and a love letter to all the people who sacrifice many things in order to make something that audiences cherish.”

Carol seems to be in no danger of waning. “It’s a redemption story. Everyone loves those!” says Edelstein, who is also The Old Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director. “Ebenezer Scrooge is an angry, self-centered narcissist who lives entirely cut off from any kind of productive human interaction. The three spirits he meets—past, present and future—show him how necessary it is to make simple, loving connections to others. His last-minute transformations, from loner to family man, from miser to philanthropist, from curmudgeon to delight, inspire us to turn away from our own ‘scrooginess’ and love the people around us.”

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees . . . The new Performances program platform, accessed on any digital device, is among the more enduring innovations to have come out of the pandemic. The platform provides the programs for 20 Southern California performing-arts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Ahmanson Theatre to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.

The touchless platform provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates and numerous other

arts-centric features. Audiences receive a link and a code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too.

Screens go dark when curtains go up and return when house lights come back on. Updates—such as repertory changes, understudy substitutions and significant new donations—can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary. Other features include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.
