Dear Friends,
As you embrace the falling leaves, cooler temperatures, and the start of the school year, we hope this month’s upcoming events will make your transition from the end of summer to the beginning of fall smooth and seamless.
Two acclaimed Broadway creations grace our Segerstrom Hall stage: The hilariously clever production of The Book of Mormon is a show perfect for jaw-drops and laughs and still one of the world’s most popular musicals. Les Misérables returns later this month with its sensational and romantic story. A gorgeous post-modern performance staged by the matchless Complexions Contemporary Ballet is a one-night-only production that you won’t want to miss!
Two Grammy Award-winning artistic forces in the world of jazz—
Terence Blanchard with the Turtle Island Quartet and Catherine Russell—will bless your ears in the evenings at Samueli Theater. And over in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, spend an evening in conversation with award-winning author Tara Westover or celebrate the music of Laurel Canyon in the 1970s with Jessica Vosk’s California Dreamin’.
As the flowers lose their color and the green begins to fade, find color in the music and arts here at the Center. We are thrilled to have you join us!

It’s not your imagination: Ain’t Too Proud arrives at the Center
THE STORY OF PHENOM singing group The Temptations is told in Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, opening next month for two weeks. This Broadway hit was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won for Best Choreography.
The musical follows the extraordinary journey of five young men who had voices from heaven and used them to escape from the streets of Detroit all the way to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal set to the beat of the group’s treasured hits, including “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” and so many more. The musical is based on the 1988 memoir The Temptations, co-written by Otis Williams and Patricia Romanowski. Williams, at age 81, is the last surviving original member of the group.
“This show is a mirror of true life; joy, heartbreak, bigotry, alienation, success,” says Rolling Stone. “Ain’t Too Proud is simply beyond just the music.” The Guardian says, “The production is stufed full of their hits, such as ‘My Girl’ and ‘Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,’ all of which sound red hot to this day.” You’ll be tempted to sing along with all the great songs, although we recommend letting our stars do the crooning.
Billboard magazine has named The Temptations the greatest R&B group of all time. At their height in the ’60s and ’70s, their music covered a wide variety of styles, including classic R&B, psychedelic soul, pop, funk, rock ‘n’ roll, and adult contemporary. The unmistakable harmonies took The Temptations to the top of the charts creating an amazing 42 Top Ten Hits with 14 reaching number one.
But it wasn’t always easy. Ain’t Too Proud tells how the original members met, the groundbreaking heights they hit, and how personal and political conflicts threatened to tear the group apart as the United States fell into civil unrest. Over the years there were changes in the line-up as some members left or passed away, but the fabulous sound the group created never stopped.
Ain’t Too Proud is directed by Des McAnuf, who directed the long-running Jersey Boys and knows his way around hit tunes. The flawless performances and faultless choreography perfectly set up the 31 songs on the show’s playlist.
It’s the next best thing to experiencing The Temptations in concert.

Calder Quartet premieres new commission for the Center
THE CALDER QUARTET RETURNS to the Center with an extraordinary program that ranges from Schubert to a new commission, with two rarely performed pieces by Julius Eastman and Ann Southam in between. Joining the quartet is Timo Andres, a pianist and composer who wrote two of the pieces being performed, including a world premiere commissioned by Center supporters Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting.
The Calder brings immediacy and context to the works they perform, creating an artfully crafted musical experience that captivates audiences. The Los Angeles Times says the Calder is “one of America’s great string quartets,” while The New York Times calls them “superb” and “imaginative, skillful creators.” Winners of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, they explore a broad spectrum of repertoire, and are widely known for the discovery, commissioning,
recording, and mentoring of some of today’s best emerging composers.
Eastman, who died in 1990, was a Black American composer and pianist whose work is associated with musical minimalism. He was a piano prodigy and studied at the renowned Curtis Institute. In the years after graduation, Eastman composed minimal compositions and collaborated with experimental composers including John Cage and Lukas Foss. But he slid into addiction and homelessness, and much of his work was lost — literally — when he was evicted from an apartment and much of his belongings were thrown away. Today, says composer and critic Kyle Gann, “His pieces sound particularly distinctive, as though he had not only absorbed minimalism, but could see into its future.”
Canadian composer Ann Southam was also known for her minimalist and lyrical style. She
was attending secretarial school when she decided to drop out and pursue her interest in music, which up to that time had just been a hobby.
In the early 1960s she was accepted at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied piano and composition. She was passionate about electronic music in the 1960s, but after buying a home and a grand piano in the ’70s she began composing acoustic pieces, including the one on our program. Southam had a career that encouraged other women composers of the day to fight to be accepted in the composition field.
Works by Timo Andres open and close the program. The 38-year-old will play the piano for both. Andres was only 24 when the LA Philharmonic commissioned a work from him, which was performed by the Phil and John Adams. He has gone on to receive commissions from Wigmore Hall London, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebauw Amsterdam, and more. Andres has also made a career of piano recitals, for which he is in great demand.
His work has been praised for blending traditional and contemporary sounds. Guardian has described Andres’ work as having “playful intelligence and individuality.” The New Yorker said of his first album in 2010 that Andres is “quietly awesome” and described his music as “the kind of sprawling, brazen work that a young composer should write.”
The Calder, named after the famed American artist, is much in demand. The ensemble plays at major venues around the world and collaborates with renowned musicians. The New York Times says it “showed that the time-honored string quartet format still proves fertile ground for innovation and surprise in the hands of imaginative, skillful creators.”
“Every time I hear the Calder, it’s reached a new level,” says Mark Swed of the Los Angeles Times. “That remains true… as the Calder takes its place as one of America’s most satisfying quartets.”

MASTERING THE ART OF THE BEDROOM
95 YEARS OF SWEDISH EXCELLENCE
Since 1926, four generations of the Ljung family have aspired to produce the most comfortable and technologically advanced beds on the market.
As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices.
Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientifc community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide.
The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.
Educating Tara
WHAT DOES IT TAKE to complete a Ph.D at Cambridge University (UK) when you were raised with a minimal homeschooling education? That’s a question answered by Tara Westover in her best-selling book, Educated. She will open the 2023–24 In Conversation Series later this month with a discussion about the book and her life.
Westover, the youngest of seven children, wrote about her isolated upbringing in rural Idaho by parents who were Mormon and suspicious of modern medicine, schooling, and anything involving the government. Her mother was a midwife and alternative healer and took care of any injuries that happened to the children during their work in the family scrap yard. Her father was a harsh taskmaster and one of her brothers was violent towards her.
Realizing as a teen that she wanted more than what the family ofered, Westover knew education was the way out: Another brother had already left for college. She bought textbooks and educated herself to a level that enabled her to be admitted to Brigham Young University with a scholarship. How was that experience? “I felt like a dancer on stage who had missed rehearsal,” she told The Guardian (UK). “I made some excruciating mistakes. But then again, after years of knowing virtually nothing at all, I found learning so exciting.” In the book she wrote, “The skill I was learning was a critical one: the patience to read things I could not yet understand.”
It was clear to her professors that she had talent, and one encouraged her to take a semester to study at prestigious Cambridge University. Westover excelled, and subsequently earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. there.
In 2018 Westover wrote her book. Educated spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list and was nominated for many book awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award. The book caused an
estrangement from most of her family but she hopes one day they can repair the damage.
Westover, who today is a senior research fellow at Harvard University, was awarded the National Humanities Medal this year by President Biden. She has not written another book, but that may still happen. “It was so hard learning how to [write] properly it seems a waste of all that efort not to do more of it,” she says.
This will be a fascinating start to the series. It will continue in November with Amor Towles, who wrote the acclaimed Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow; in February with Kristin Hannah, who penned The Nightingale and more than a dozen other books; and the series concludes in April with Michael Pollan, author of An Omnivore’s Dilemma
Each person in this diverse group brings something unique to the audience about their books, what inspires them and how their lives have shaped their art.

THE SAMUELI NAME has long been associated with the Center, not least for Samueli Theater, which opened in 2006 with a capital gift from the Samueli family. In its intimate space, we have presented a wide assortment of jazz, cabaret, chamber music, and family shows. But it hasn’t stopped there.
Extending its long-standing commitment, the Samueli Foundation recently gave the Center a generous three-year grant to support free, inclusive programming on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and in Samueli Theater. The gift builds on the Foundation’s belief that everyone should have access to high-quality arts programming. Community events on our plaza help drive a vibrant arts environment in Orange County.
“We are delighted to continue the strong connection between the Samueli Foundation and the Center,” says Lindsey Spindle, the Foundation’s president. “Expanded programming in both the Samueli Theater and the Plaza creates substantially more
opportunities for everyone in Orange County to experience multi-cultural artistic excellence.”
The Center broke ground for the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza in 2017, and since then it has played host to a wide variety of performances and festivals, artistic programs, and special events. During the pandemic, the Plaza became a place for people to gather safely in the open air. If there was ever a time when we needed to listen to live music and share space with others this was it, and the Plaza became an important area for the general public to put their isolation aside for a bit. Safe, mandated spacing was marked out and everyone was able to keep their distance while they enjoyed live entertainment.
The Center’s community engagement department outdoes itself with ideas for original outdoor activities. It’s become a space where fun is expected.
In October, the iconic cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show is screened for enthusiastic fans with a “Hallo-Queen Spooktacular” Drag Show that kicks of the nights festivities. The
first 200 guests to arrive receive prop bags that follow the film’s antics to make for an exciting immersive experience.
In December we celebrate Holidays Around the World, a day of festive fun complete with a variety of performances from music acts and dance groups that celebrate global holiday traditions. Families can enjoy making crafts together and drinking hot cocoa and also experience the magic of snowfall on the Plaza!
In the spring we honor Women’s History Month with ¡DAMAS!, an evolving celebration that highlights local women in music, dance, and small businesses.
The Plaza is also the site of the annual Beckman Arts and Science Family Festival. This free family day is a celebration of the connections between arts and science and features an assortment of engaging, hands-on activities for the entire family.
In the summer we host a wide variety of things to do, including Summer Sounds, a series of free concerts on Friday nights, and
Mondays
Movie Mondays, a long-time Center favorite. The Coollab Festival is a collaboration with a local open mic called The Coollab Project, a culmination of local hip hop jazz musicians coming together to perform alongside some of OC’s rising talents. Fans of the music collective, can enjoy a variety of photo ops, vendors, food trucks and dancing all night long. Our All Abilities Celebration focuses on performances, workshops, and local organizations highlighting individuals with disabilities.
From spring to fall we host Tuesday Night Dance classes, which feature a diferent style every month, including Bollywood, Hula, Broadway, and Belly Dance. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to try something new and have fun.
These are just a few of the events we ofer on the Plaza, and the Center is always thinking of new ways to engage with our community. We’re very grateful to the Samueli Foundation for this gift that helps enable the Center to share the arts with everyone.
Miho Hazama: East to West
MIHO HAZAMA WAS IN COLLEGE when she discovered jazz music, an encounter that changed the trajectory of her life and career. Now, this rising star makes her Center debut with her jazz chamber orchestra, m_unit, which includes strings, horns, woodwinds and a piano/ bass/drums rhythm section.
Hazama is a gifted composer, conductor and arranger. “As a composer, she maximizes the sound and scope of the instruments in her ensemble,” says Downbeat. “As a conductor, she makes sure each sound gets its own hearing as it cycles into prominence… Hazama’s compositions are as economical as they are lush — a tricky balance.” Jazz Times says the ensemble is “a classy large ensemble that keeps the listener guessing and enchanted.”
Hazama began her music career when she learned to play electric keyboard at the age of three. She attended a private music
conservatory in Japan where she studied classical composition and arrangement. Her career might have stayed in the classical music world had she not attended a concert by her college’s big band. It was her first experience of hearing jazz.
“I thought they sounded really cool,” she told Jazzspeaks.com. “I thought I might be able to experience something exciting in the band, so I started playing piano with them. From that point on, I became more and more interested in jazz composition.”
After earning her undergraduate degree, Hazama headed to New York City, home of a multitude of jazz music venues, and attended the Manhattan School of Music for a master’s degree. Her professors encouraged her composition, telling her she had a unique and interesting voice in the jazz genre. Hazama says she
continued on page 20
discovered something about herself in the thriving music scene. “Before I studied abroad, I was struggling to find my own voice, something that truly said, ‘This is me.’” In the big city she found her bold and unique musical self, heavily influenced by Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely and Vince Mendoza, who sparked her interest.
Hazama received a Grammy nomination for her third album, and Downbeat magazine named her one of their “25 for the Future.”
“Hazama’s boldly organic and singularly exciting collective is a breath of fresh air,” says All About Jazz. “Her uncanny ability to remain intellectually stimulating and vibrantly spirited is what makes her work singularly innovative.” She’s in demand around the world not just as a composer but also as a conductor.
Her conducting style may look delicate but she draws out a big sound, and these days she has ample opportunities to show that of Hamaza has been appointed the permanent guest conductor of Metropole Orkest in the Netherlands, the largest full-time ensemble of its kind, and she is associate artistic director of the New York Jazzharmonic.
She also has a great sense of humor. In 2019 Hazama was appointed chief conductor of the prestigious Danish Radio Big Band. On her arrival at Copenhagen airport she was welcomed by a dozen musicians playing “Willkommen” (from Cabaret) and a conductor’s baton was presented to her on a red velvet pillow. She took the baton with a flourish and began leading the players in another song as other passengers passed them with rather puzzled looks — it’s all on YouTube.
Hazama says that after she came to New York and was encouraged by friends and teachers, “I got to the point where I decided I wanted my music to be heard by a wider audience.” She is accomplishing that in a big way. Join us and see what all the fuss is about.

marigolds. Music and dancing are also part of this celebration honoring the cycle of life. It’s an important event in Latin communities in the United States, especially here in Southern California.
Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian (indigenous to southern Mexico) mother and an American father. Born in Oaxaca and raised there and in Minnesota, she embraces both sides of her heritage. With her singular voice she reinterprets various styles of contemporary music and weaves them with traditional Mexican and Mesoamerican music, incorporating indigenous Mixtec, Zapotec and Maya with her Spanish and English. “Lila Downs has a voice that can overwhelm an audience with varied emotions, from the exuberance of a mezcal-soaked fiesta to the lament of a woman scorned,” says Minnesota Public Radio News. With a symbolic stage presence and emotional storytelling through song, Downs’ singing transcends all language barriers.
MULTIPLE GRAMMY WINNER Lila Downs returns to the Center to celebrate one of Mexico’s most colorful holidays, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. She will be here October 11 for this celebration of Mexican tradition and culture. “Nothing compares to seeing Lila Downs live,” says LatinJazzNet.com.
As a time to honor departed family and friends, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 2, All Souls Day. Living family and friends create altars at the graves of loved ones, decorating them with candles and garlands of
An evening with Downs is a fascinating musical journey. Her music is as varied as the ancient cultures that serve as her inspiration. The Washington Post describes Downs’ sound as “brassy mariachis and bluesy boleros, old folk tales and new social-justice anthems that all make perfect sense together.” As a passionate human rights activist, Downs’ lyrics often focus on stories of social injustice and the experiences within the suppressed Latin American community of women of indigenous and working-class origins.
She makes a strong connection with her fans, who are all ages and backgrounds. “I am very fortunate,” says Downs. “People who follow my music belong to all walks of life.” Join us and you too will become a Lila Downs fan.

IT’S OKAY TO WEAR GLASSES; it’s okay to have curly hair; it’s okay to have an invisible friend; it’s okay to be missing a tooth; it’s okay to have a llama in your garden!
In Todd Parr’s long-time popular book It’s Okay to Be Diferent, he helps children see that no matter who you are or what you like, it’s all okay and you should always feel good about yourself. That’s the message Todd wants everyone to hear, and since it was released more than two decades ago, it remains a popular resource for teaching diversity and tolerance.
Now it comes to the Center’s Family Series presented by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. The show It’s Okay to Be Diferent incorporates three of Parr’s books including The Earth Book and This Is My Hair. helps inspire young ones to help keep the earth happy and healthy, while This Is My H children that everyone’s hair can be silly and do things you don’t expect, like stand on end or get chewing gum stuck in it or become a giant shampoo bubble.
“It’s inspiring for me to see my books come to life on stage,” says Parr. “I’ve always believed story time should be fun, and this will be the ultimate experience of my books for young and old alike.”
The Mermaid Theatre has a sterling reputation for its innovative family programming and unparalleled touring circuits that allows children almost everywhere to experience original theater, many for the first time. It was founded more than 50 years ago and each year presents more than 400 performances for 200,000 spectators. In addition to Canada and the United States, the company has toured to more
than a dozen countries. The company has been to the Center several times and is always popular.
Arrive an hour before the show starts and join us for free, fun activities that families can enjoy together. This is a great way to play together creatively, explore the themes of the performance and connect with other patrons. Past pre-show activities have included puppet making, drum circles, conducting lessons and even a silent disco! It will be oodles of fun for the whole family.
SAMUELI THEATER
October 14–15 | Tickets $20
“There’s a light, over at the Frankenstein Place.”
AUDIENCES CAN’T GET ENOUGH of Dr. Frank N. Furter and his friends in the seemingly haunted mansion (actually Oakley Court, now a hotel near Windsor, UK). They will be back on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza for a seasonal screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show This Center tradition is now in its third year.
The pre-show party will be hosted by Miss Clair Voyance, along with her sinister drag sisters. And since the date will be Friday the 13th (ooooo, spooky!) they will perform a Halloween-themed drag show. Be sure to arrive early for the best spots and for your special goodie bag with all the props you need to be an active participant in the show. Only the first 200 guests will receive one, and you don’t want to miss out.
Don’t be like some of the movie’s characters, "Lost in time, and lost in space...” Join your friends in another time warp—on the Plaza!
