To Kill a Mockingbird reimagined for a new generation
“I WANT TO BE the Jane Austen of the American South.” That’s what Harper Lee said in her last interview in 1964 about her masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird. Now, Academy Award® winner Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Lee’s Pulitzer Prizewinning book comes to the Center with a new look at this great novel. Richard Thomas stars in the iconic role of Atticus Finch.
Rolling Stone gives the production 5 stars, calling it “an emotionally shattering landmark production of an American classic,” and New York magazine calls it “a real phenomenon. Majestic and incandescent, it’s filled with breath and nuance and soul.”
Lee wanted to be the “chronicler of small town, middle class, Southern life, as opposed to the gothic, Tobacco Road, plantation life stories.” In telling the story of a principled lawyer and a Black defendant in the 1930s Deep South, she created a book that is still relevant today. The novel, written in 1960, was set in the fictional small town of Maycomb, Alabama, a stand-in for her own hometown of Monroeville.
Sorkin presents a new angle on the story: It’s told by Scout, her brother Jem, and their best
friend Dill. They are now grown up and looking back at one of the defining moments of their childhood—the trial of a Black man accused of rape who is defended in court by Atticus Finch, father of Scout and Jem. Finch “is wrenched from his faith in the goodness of humankind toward a more sober assessment of the limits of human decency,” says the Washington Post Sorkin told the Hollywood Reporter about the change: “In the book you’ve got a guy who’s got all the answers,” he said, “and in this play you’ve got a guy who’s wrestling with the questions.”
In an online interview, Thomas talks about how this production has taken issues from the book and brought them into the present day, highlighting more about the environment in which the Black characters live. “Sorkin keeps the integrity of the play,” says Thomas. “Atticus is frustrated about wanting to make things right, but he can’t do as much as he wants to.”
Sorkin says of his version, “It’s not an exercise in nostalgia and it’s not an homage to one of America’s favorite books. Mockingbird should reflect an increased awareness of racism then and now,” says Sorkin. It’s still Lee’s book, but

The idea of a deaf opera singer might seem improbable. Sorkin focuses on themes that are still relevant and have new meaning now. Atticus as the protagonist believes good can be found in everyone but as the play goes on, he realizes he doesn’t know his neighbors as well as he may have thought. Sorkin also gives the two Black characters larger roles, with more to say.
Yaegel T. Welch, who plays Tom Robinson, the trial defendant, says, “With everything happening in America today, it feels like an honor to be able to tell this story. It’s as much about how racism transforms a white community as it is about how it destroys a Black family.”
“I don’t think it’s possible to experience this story and not feel something,” says Jacqueline Williams, who plays Calpurnia, the Finchs’ housekeeper, who has much more to say than she did in the book. “Part of me wishes we didn’t need this story as much as we do.”
“Patrons will be surprised by what happens when they are in the theater,” says Sorkin. “It’s very much about us today.”

Awards. His concerts are sell-outs, and he has appeared with the country’s leading conductors and orchestras. With his powerful baritone, he sings every genre from contemporary to jazz, opera, pop and the Great American Songbook. He has starred in films and on television. During the pandemic he often spent time on his balcony serenading his neighbors. He even knows how to ride a bicycle on a high wire.
BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL has nothing to prove when he performs at the Center for one night only next month in the Center’s Headliners Series. He’s what we would refer to as a singing, acting multi-tasker.
Stokes (as he likes to be called) has been described as “the last leading man” by The New York Times, having starred in numerous top Broadway musicals and taken home two Tony
He doesn’t just sing the songs. He inhabits the song and its character, sometimes in surprising ways. “Mr. Mitchell is a storyteller of the highest order, informed by the heart, and delivered with passion and humor … so much humor,” says Broadwayworld.com. “To sit in a room with him and watch the overwhelming displays of emotion that wash over his face and that effectively alter his physicality is a special treat.” His acting chops are certainly used as he connects strongly with his audience through a song’s words.
Call it the Brian Stokes Mitchell effect. You will want to fall under his spell, even if it’s just for one evening.

“The
Mothers and Daughters
This season, a new series is joining the Center’s performance calendar: In Conversation. We have three fascinating and celebrated authors: Amy Tan, Fran Lebowitz and Erik Larson. Each person in this diverse group brings something unique to share with the audience about their books, what inspires them, and how their lives have shaped their art. Tan opens the series on January 23.
Tan’s early forays into writing were far from the books that have made her famous. As a freelance writer she completed many projects for business companies, including Bank of America, IBM and Pacific Bell, but this was to pay the bills. For real fulfillment, she began writing The Joy Luck Club on the side. The career she was meant to have had begun.
Today, Amy Tan is best known as the author of that book, which was made into a successful film, as well as five other novels, including The Bonesetter’s Daughter and The Kitchen God’s Wife. Her work often focuses on Chinese mothers and their daughters, derived from her own experience. Tan says, “I’m not writing sociology; it just so happens this is what happened in my own family. Who we become has so much to do with the experiences we’ve had.” Tan’s books have become so popular that she has to remind people they are works of fiction.
She was born to Chinese parents who emigrated to the Bay Area to escape the Chinese Civil War. There were dark secrets for Tan to discover, many of which found their way into her writing and make her books so compelling. Much of her work focuses on her Chinese heritage and what she experienced as she was growing up. It obviously resonates with readers. “A lot of what I write is emotion based. I have to feel the story,” says Tan. “If I’ve written it well, the readers will feel the emotions too and they will find relevance in their own lives.”
“Amy Tan has a wonderful eye for what is telling, a fine ear for dialogue, a deep empathy
for her subject matter,” says The New York Times. “They sing with a rare fidelity and beauty.”
Tan’s novels are all New York Times bestsellers, and her memoir, two children’s books, and numerous magazine articles enjoy popular acclaim. Today she’s the subject of a PBS documentary and is still sought after for what she has to say about writing, families, and the trauma and resilience that shaped her. Her mother had hoped Tan would become a doctor and for many years they had a difficult relationship. Now she says her own measure of success is the joy she can bring others. “I [was] successful in making my mother happy,” says Tan. “Those are the moments of true success.”
This will be an exceptional opportunity to hear Tan share what made her who she is as a writer and the paths she has taken, which include becoming a renowned artist.

Think Pink!
WHEN AN ASPIRING POLITICIAN—and talented pianist—in Portland, Oregon, decided that political events and rallies needed better music, he also decided he would be the one to make the change happen. And so Pink Martini was born; the group comes to Segerstrom Hall January 12.
The founder is Thomas Lauderdale, and he gained a new career as the band’s leader and dazzling pianist. Featuring a dozen musicians and with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages around the world. The band’s music genres include pop, Latin, jazz, rock, easy listening, and more.
Soon after it was established, Lauderdale invited an old college friend, China Forbes, to join the band as lead singer and to help write songs. “All of us in Pink Martini have studied different languages as well as different styles of music from different parts of the world,” says Forbes. “Inevitably, our repertoire is wildly diverse. It’s a bit like an urban travelogue, but we are very much an American band.”
“Pink Martini have become an international phenomenon by mixing glamour and
sophisticated easy listening with multilingual songs and the unexpected,” says the Guardian (UK). “There were German Japanese, Croatian, French, Turkish and Greek numbers … the audience were on their feet. Pink Martini’s unlikely multilingual formula works magnificently.”
The band’s first hit was “Sympathique,” released in 1997. The song—written and sung in French—was nominated in France as Song of the Year and Best New Artist at the Victoires de la Musique Awards in 2000. It’s still wildly popular there: French workers sing it during employment strikes. The chorus starts “Je neveux pas travailler” (“I don’t want to work”).
After making their European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, and has released 12 albums, including Dream a Little Dream, recorded with four von Trapps, greatgrandchildren of the original Captain and Maria von Trapp of movie fame.
It might all sound gimmicky, but these musicians are seriously talented, and often the vocals are eclectic. One of the band’s recent albums was called Je dis oui! (I Say Yes) and featured vocals from fashion icon Ikram Goldman (she sourced Michelle Obama’s first inauguration gown), civil rights activist Kathleen Saadat, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. The album itself had 15 tracks sung in 8 different languages: French, Farsi, Armenian, Portuguese, Arabic, Turkish, Xhosa and English. Talk about global inclusivity and collaborative spirit!
The music is exhilarating and uplifting,” says Lauderdale. “I think it brings a lot of happiness. This music and band carry reminders of the beauty that can still exist in the world.”
Pink Martini is presented with generous support from Steven and Herma Brenneis

Tiny Dancers
IS 3 YEARS OLD TOO YOUNG for a child to start ballet classes? You might think so if you watched 12 little girls in pink leotards hopping around the studio with their teacher. It may look like they are playing—there is a lot of giggling—but, in fact, they are learning the first elements of dance steps on which they will build proper technique in each subsequent level of their dance education.
At the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center, PrePrimary classes start at age 3. When the school opened in 2015, these classes were waitlisted and extra sessions were added to the schedule. Parents understood the importance of building a safe and solid dance foundation from the very start.
“I enrolled my 5-year-old twin daughters in the ABT School because of its structured program, says Whitney Gonzalez. “ABT also has fantastic teachers. Mrs. Jones, who teaches my daughters, has a love for children and ballet that make her classes warm and welcoming. I could not have picked a better school for my children
to begin their ballet journey.”
Bad training can happen to the best dancers. Maria Tallchief (1925–2013), who is considered America’s first major prima ballerina (and was a Native American), wrote of her first dance teacher: “She was a wretched instructor who never taught the basics.” The teacher put her in pointe shoes at age 5, (this usually happens at about age 12). “It’s a miracle I wasn’t permanently harmed.” Tallchief was eventually placed with a new teacher, and the rest is ballet history.
This is why it makes sense for a child to start ballet lessons at the age of 3 or 4 with a reputable dance school, one that knows how to introduce children to the joy of dancing and teach them correctly while making it fun.
Elaina and Kedrick Francis have three children at the ABT School: Flynn is 5 years old and in Pre-Primary and Mabel is 7 and in Primary B. (Their older daughter, Rosey, is 10 and in Level 3.) “After putting my children in classes for toddlers elsewhere, I realized there was a lot of effort going out with little reward,” says Elaina. “At ABT Gillespie School, the classes are calm without a second of wasted time. They come out tired and happy and sharing what they did in class using proper French terminology, knowing they have spent an hour doing something of

value. They carry themselves differently—taller and more confident.”
“At the ABT Gillespie school, we take into consideration how children develop,” says Sarah Jones, the school’s interim director. “Each class introduces age-appropriate material in a healthy and engaging way, and each exercise is carefully crafted with a connection to steps they will learn in the future. This occurs from Pre-Primary dancers all the way through Level 7 at age 18.”
For instance, hopping across the studio like bunnies starts to strengthen the muscles they will eventually use to perform a sauté—standing with feet together, then pushing off from the toes, jumping straight up and landing in a proper plié
When the 3-year-olds march from one red star on the floor to another across the studio, it teaches them the coordination needed to move in a straight line while learning the sharp dynamics of the step. What seems like play now (more giggling!) will develop at advanced levels as specific movements, allowing them to build upon what they started at this age.
Students also acquire important skills that will integrate into all parts of their lives as they grow. “ABT gives my daughters the opportunity to build friendships while creating a passion for the art,” say Whitney.
Young dancers learn discipline, to be good listeners, how to take direction, to pay attention, and to be considerate of each other. In this
age of instant gratification, they learn patience and how to work well with others. “As they get older and join a dance company they will likely begin in the corps de ballet,” says Jones. “They have to learn multiple roles quickly and be able to change gears as they prepare to dance in a different work than they did two days ago. At the same time, they are learning a lot about teamwork: A good corps moves as one.”
Whether these young dancers grow up to be principals with a leading ballet company or decide they would rather keep their feet on the ground, the training they receive now at the ABT Gillespie School will always stand them in good stead.
This year, second semester enrollment opened on November 28 for classes beginning the week of January 3, 2023. Like the school’s opening year, classes are already filled and additional Pre-Primary and Primary classes are being added to the schedule. Scan the QR code here for more information.

Takács Quartet
THE GRAMMY WINNING Takács Quartet, longtime favorites of Segerstrom Center audiences, returns to Samueli Theater next month. The program includes works by Britten, Bartok and Dvořák.
The program highlights themes of displacement and return, which are also explored by Edward Dusinberre, the quartet’s British first violinist, in his recently released new book, Distant Melodies: Music in Search of a Home. Ticketholders will receive a link for an online pre-concert talk by Dusinberre about the program and book, and he will sign copies after the performance.
“What a gem of a book!” says Marc-André Hamelin, renowned pianist and composer. “Dusinberre mingles historical perspective with personal and practical experience relating to a quartet repertoire that has meant a lot to him over the years. The result is a brilliantly engaging narrative.”
The Takács Quartet formed in 1975 in
Budapest and within two years had won First Prize and Critic’s Choice at the International String Quartet Competition in France. They continued to win the leading music competitions and have solidified a reputation for innovative programs. Today, the ensemble is based at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and the line-up of musicians has changed (only one original member remains), but it continues to thrill audiences.
“What endures about the Takács Quartet, year after year, is how equally the four players carry the music,” says the Guardian (UK). That’s a great reason to see them again.

Year-End Tax-Planning Strategies
THE CENTER HAS BROUGHT you thrills and excitement that only happen through the performing arts. You can’t imagine your life without experiencing the exhilaration of live music, dance and Broadway musicals, and you want to ensure future generations can do the same.
Your support can help make possible expanded programming in innovative and exciting ways and secure the Center’s future. If this resonates with you, there are charitable planning strategies that can help you lower your income taxes this year while supporting Segerstrom Center.
Donor Advised Fund (DAF)
• If you are looking for an end-of-year deduction but want more time to make thoughtful giving decisions, consider a donor advised fund (DAF). You can make grants from your DAF now and in the future to support our work and other causes you care about.
Zero Tax Gift and Sale
• If you are planning to sell an asset like securities, real estate or a business, before you sell, consider a “zero tax” charitable gift and sale. By making a gift of part of the asset before the sale, you can use a tax saving charitable deduction to significantly lower or eliminate the capital gains tax on the sale.
IRA Charitable Rollover
• Congress made permanent the law that allows people age 70½ or older who own an IRA to make cash gifts directly from their IRA to charity. For many people, this is the best tax-wise way to give. An IRA rollover gift will not be included in your taxable income and may qualify for your required minimum distribution. Contact us to learn more.
If you would like further information on these end of year planning strategies, please contact Elizabeth Kurila, senior director of gift planning strategies at ekurila@scfta.org or direct at (714) 942-6275.

Synopsis: ACT I
Scene 1, The Kitchen
On Christmas Eve, the Stahlbaum kitchen is alive with activity as cooks and housekeepers bustle about preparing for the family’s annual holiday party. The Nanny keeps a watchful eye over the Stahlbaum children, Clara and Fritz. Once preparations are done, everyone adjourns to the parlor to greet the guests. Clara turns back as she exits and is startled to see a mouse. She runs to join the others in the dining room. With the kitchen completely empty, more mischievous mice appear and scurry about looking for scraps of the holiday meal.
Scene 2, The Party
The Stahlbaums welcome family and friends to their grand parlor replete with holiday decorations, including a beautiful Christmas tree. The party grows festive with music and dance as Clara’s godfather, Drosselmeyer, magically appears. A skilled toymaker always full of the most inventive surprises, Drosselmeyer entertains everyone as he presents four lifesized dolls. However, these dolls cannot be played with, and Clara is disappointed. Then, Drosselmeyer gives Clara a unique Nutcracker handsomely dressed as a soldier. Fritz becomes jealous of his sister and rushes at her, snatching the Nutcracker from her and breaking it. A heartbroken Clara looks on as Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Stahlbaum family retires for a long winter night’s rest.
Scene 3, The Battle
During the night, a sleepy Clara tiptoes back down the staircase in search of her beloved Nutcracker. As the clock strikes midnight, Clara sees Drosselmeyer’s face on the clock and becomes distressed by mice scampering into the room from all sides. The Nutcracker tries to help her but is carried away by the mice. Drosselmeyer appears just in time to catch Clara as she faints from fright. As she recovers, Clara sees her house change all around her. The Christmas tree grows large and wondrous. The Nutcracker heroically summons the toy soldiers to help fend off the scurrying mice. The fierce Mouse King arrives and engages in a duel with the Nutcracker. Just when it seems the evil Mouse King may be victorious, Clara takes off her shoe and bravely throws it at him, casting a fatal blow. As the mice quickly retreat, the Nutcracker transforms into a young Prince.
Scene 4, The Snow
The Stahlbaum parlor suddenly becomes quite cold and snowflakes begin to fall. At first, the snow falls gently as if in a waltz but it builds into a frightful blizzard. Drosselmeyer brings a small sleigh to rescue Clara and the Prince from the freezing snow, and the moonlight guides them on a shining path for their journey over snowcovered hills.
ACT II
Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy
Drosselmeyer navigates the sleigh through the blizzard to safety in the sunny Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her subjects are amazed to learn of Clara’s bravery in killing the Mouse King, and the Fairy commands a festival in honor of Clara, featuring charming dances from around the world. As the celebration draws to a close, Clara receives her greatest Christmas wish and sees herself transformed into a beautiful Princess to dance in the arms of her Nutcracker Prince.

EPILOGUE — Christmas Morning
As the joyous celebration and magic kingdom fade, Clara suddenly finds herself alone in her room on Christmas morning, wondering: “Was this all a dream?”
There will be one intermission.

She takes care of our family one generation to the next.
Grams is the heart of the family. To honor her, we decided to give our daughter her name. We’d hoped to surprise her with the news when she visited us at the hospital, but the pandemic put a stop to that. We mentioned our disappointment to Lisa, our Whittier Trust Advisor, and the next thing you know, we’re getting a video call from Grams on her brand new tablet that Lisa set up for her. Our daughter Carolyn met her great grandmother and namesake on her very rst day. And it was all because Lisa takes care of everything with our family, including the little things
