The car is the star

Photos: Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade

In films, a moving car is easy to devise. But what about on a theater stage? Can the illusion really deceive a discerning theater crowd?

You can find out when Back to the Future the Musical arrives in Orange County. Adapted for stage by the iconic film’s creators, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, it premiered in London and won the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. (That’s the British version of the Tony Awards.) It’s now Stateside and coming to Segerstrom Center on December 26. The show has 16 original songs along with the film’s hits including “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and “Back in Time.”

The story is a lot like the movie. Let’s hit the refresh button. When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine (a DeLorean car) built by eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past, and send himself … back to the future.

The show is getting rave reviews. “A jawdropping spectacle that hits all the right

buttons,” says USA Today, while Entertainment Weekly says, “Brings all the magic from the screen to the stage.”

But back to the car. “I think the most important rule we gave ourselves is the car is the star,” Finn Ross, the musical’s video designer, told NPR. Timeout.com says, “No question, the DeLorean is magnificently done.”

Set designer Tim Hatley made a car that was a bit smaller than a regular-sized DeLorean so it could fit onstage and then filled it with gadgets that help the illusion. Ross told NPR that rest is magic—LED lights, scrims, video, sound, and more that will thrill audiences as the car peels out, leaving a trail of sparks. (Of course, no one is telling how it actually happens.) As Timeout.com says, “Where this musical is going, you don’t need roads.” Your own car will never feel the same.

The golden glow of success

It started 50 years ago when the idea of building a performing arts center in Orange County was being seriously discussed among a group of arts supporters. They decided to kickstart that goal and hold a fundraising dinner and concert, which became known as Candlelight Concert.

This year’s very special 50th anniversary event will bring the golden glamour of Orange County for the biggest fundraiser in the Center’s history. Stephanie Argyros and John Ginger will share the spotlight as this year’s Candlelight Chairs, and the evening will include a special private performance by an incomparable superstar artist. Lugano Diamonds will be the luxury jewelry presenting sponsor.

“I am delighted to have been chosen as co-chair for this year’s Candlelight Concert,” says Argyros. “My family has been involved in

supporting the Center for decades and it is incredible to now be celebrating half a century of wonderful entertainment. I want to give a special thanks to all the previous co-chairs of Candlelight. It’s an honor to follow in their footsteps.”

In 1974 the founders’ committee, which included Tom Moon, Gordon Hodge, and Ruth Ding and had almost no budget, was offered an empty Kresge dime store at no cost to hold their first event, but it was in rough shape. There were large rips in the carpet. The walls had holes, electrical wires were sticking out of sockets, and the paint was scratched. In an effort to hide the imperfections and lack of electricity, the committee decided to light the evening with candles—lots of them. It would give a truly

magical effect, and maybe people wouldn’t notice the room’s poor condition.

The gala was held in December, and holiday decorations were loaned by a department store. Entertainment was provided by renowned conductor Carmen Dragon and the Glendale Symphony with the Master Chorale. The first Candlelight Concert was successful in presenting an elegant event and raised $5,000.

Thus, a tradition began.

From that inauspicious beginning the committee’s efforts paid off, and the Center opened in 1986 (it was then called Orange County Performing Arts Center). The Candlelight celebration continued to be held at outside venues until 1996, when the tradition of dining on the Segerstrom Hall stage began, and subsequent Candlelight Concerts came home.

“This was once a bean field and from that to a concert by a top entertainer at this year’s

event, what an evolution,” says longtime board member Sally Crockett. “This community has grown the same way. The growth of housing and businesses in this area is partly because of the desirability of this cultural center. That’s what the Center is all about.”

Candlelight Concert has become Orange County’s premiere annual holiday social event and fundraiser for Segerstrom Center for the Arts (the Center was renamed in 2012). The evening incorporates a private concert by a top name artist and dinner set on the Segerstrom Hall stage. Every year, the décor theme is a closely kept secret by the committee, with the stage only being revealed when a curtain is raised after the concert. Whether it’s the Amalfi coast, New York City’s Art Deco skyline, or even Christmas trees hanging upside down over the tables, the planning committee always presents an awe-inspiring scene.

The tables themselves are set with sumptuous decorations and, of course, candles. The scenery starts at the Segerstrom Hall entrance with a red carpet and decorations and continues on through the orchestra lobby with a cocktail bar and comfortable seating where guests can gather and chat before the performance. Past entertainers have included Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Andrea Bocelli, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Carole King, and Michael Bublé.

The funds raised support the Center’s array of outstanding entertainment, artistic, education, and community engagement programs, as well as the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School and Studio D: Arts School for all Abilities. Education programs, including Summer at the Center and Disney Musicals in Schools, as well as activities on the plaza all have support from Candlelight Concert fundraising.

“We thought the first Candlelight would be the only one,” says Ding. “We never thought it would continue to this day. I’m so proud of what we started and where we are today.”

“When you come to a performance, you leave uplifted,” says John Ginger. “I thank the founders for their vision 50 years ago, and as co-chair of this year’s Candlelight Concert, we look forward to moving successfully into the next 50 years.”

Christmas songs in a new way

Sometimes you don’t need any musical instruments to create an awesome concert. Sometimes all you need is a few voices—six, to be exact.

Take 6, a multi-award-winning a capella sextet, will celebrate Christmas at the Center, putting their unique sound to all your holiday favorites.

This is not an old-time barbershop quartet. This is jazz, pop, and R&B like you’ve never heard it. A cover of a Paul McCartney song? They’ve done that.

Singing on Sesame Street and contributing to the soundtrack of a Spike Lee film? They’ve done that too. The group has earned 10 Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. After relations between our country and Cuba were normalized, they were the first musical group chosen to perform there.

Take 6 began in the 1980s as a college quartet at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. Two other students heard the group rehearsing in a stairwell, joined in, and ultimately became part of the group. With six voices, this group can do complicated sound levels one just doesn’t imagine unless they are coming from musical instruments.

Photo: John Abbott

Take 6 is going strong more than 30 years later, with four of the original members still part of the group. (The two newbies joined in the early ’90s.) Quincy Jones is a huge fan, and they have collaborated with the likes of Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley, k.d. lang, Queen Latifah, and Nnenna Frelon. The skills are versatile enough to enable them to play at jazz festivals, pop shows, and big concert halls. “Take 6 is, arguably, the most legendary a cappella group still singing,” says bandwagmag.com.

Take 6 has released 16 albums. How has the sextet managed to remain together all these years? “The key is that the guys still like each other,” says Claude McKnight, the founder of the group.

“We have times when things get tough, but we pull together because of the love and respect we have for each other,” says Joey Kibble, who joined the group in 1991. In addition to Take 6, the members also have individual side projects that speak to their own interests. “It adds even more credibility and depth to the group as a whole, enriched by each of our outside skills and experiences,” says Kibble, who also does

motivational speaking. Kibble’s older brother, Mark, is one of the group’s original members and music arranger, for which he won his own Grammy.

“Whether singing traditional gospel tunes or pop tunes, Take 6 is about the artistry of vocal arrangement and vocal blend,” says Jazz Today. “The group is a treasure, still living and singing before us.”

Join us for this enticing evening of harmony and pure joy that will transport you to musical heaven and back.

We treat more than just your cancer.

At UCI Health, we expertly address your cancer with innovative treatments and clinical trials. But we don’t stop there. We consider all your healthcare needs and work with specialists across UCI Health to care for you beyond your cancer diagnosis.

Your fight is our fight, and together, we never cease in our commitment to a cancer-free world.

Visit ucihealth.org/cancer or call 714-500-7891 to schedule a next-day consultation.

Dr. David I. Lee is a nationally recognized fellowship-trained urologist who specializes in prostate cancer surgery.

As everyone gets ready for the Thanksgiving holiday, with shopping and football and pumpkin pie to look forward to, we also reflect on what we have to be grateful for. At the Center, we hope that the performances and activities we present are part of that list and that you and your loved ones will consider a gift to help your local performing arts community.

The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving is national #GivingTuesday, and this year you can join millions of Americans on December 3 who will donate to support a favorite non-profit organization. By choosing the Center, your donation will not only benefit our renowned

programming of music and dance, but also our life-changing education and community engagement programs.

Post pandemic, the Center has returned to a full season of performances, with full theaters that attest to the popularity of our engagements. But we want to ensure that we keep that successful momentum going and growing.

The Center is an integral part of this community. Your support also enables special programs such as Summer at the Center, Disney Musicals in Schools, and Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities, an all-inclusive space for children of all abilities to explore their full physical, social, and creative potential through high quality, joyful dance and music instruction.

The Center provides free year-round programming on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza with activities geared for all ages. During the summer the plaza plays host to Movie Mondays, which for more than a decade has shown family-friendly movies. Friday nights feature a music series that includes a variety of sounds by local artists. Tuesday night dance offers lessons in a variety of dance types, and Winter Prom is a popular event to dress up in your favorite prom era and dance the night away.

The Center is here for everyone, helping to create a culturally connected and vibrant community. Whether you love Broadway musicals or silent discos on the plaza, everyone can incorporate the performing arts into their lives. You can help us continue to thrive.

For more information about #GivingTuesday and how you can participate, visit us at scfta.org/givingtuesday or contact Friends Membership Services at (714) 556-2122, ext. 4433.

Meet a really famous dance celebrity at Nutcracker Camp

Have you met the Sugar Plum Fairy? Now is your opportunity at Nutcracker Camp at the Center. You don’t need any dance experience to enjoy the festivities.

This one-day event, ideal for ages 3–7, includes everything little Claras and Fritzs could dream of. Campers will be introduced to the story of The Nutcracker, one of the world’s most popular ballets, in a fun and enriching environment.

The morning will include a ballet class with live piano accompaniment, story time, and a Nutcracker-themed arts and crafts project. Children will learn some choreography, and there will be a guest performance by preprofessional students from the ABT Gillespie School. Best of all, campers will have a special opportunity to have their photo taken with a real live Sugar Plum Fairy!

Nutcracker Camp December 14 or 21, 2024 9:30 am–12:30 pm • $65

The camp will be held in the studios backstage in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and led by dance teachers certified in American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum.

Class size is limited so reserve your place as soon as possible!

Holiday magic

The Nutcracker returns in an enchanting production by American Ballet Theatre

In a whirl of dancing snowflakes and mice making mischief, The Nutcracker returns to Segerstrom Hall with American Ballet Theatre’s superb production of this classic ballet. Even people who don’t like ballet love this Nutcracker! It’s hard not to get excited. It has amazing sets, colorful costumes, a cast of more than 100 performers, and of course, stellar performances from some of the world’s leading dancers.

The Orange County Register praises it as a “colorful, cinematic creation filled with spectacle, humor and eye-popping costumes,” and the Los Angeles Times calls it “A joyful Nutcracker that is ravishing and clever enough to inspire multiple viewings.” Pacific Symphony performs the evocative Tchaikovsky score, which takes Clara and her Prince on a dreamlike journey with life-sized toy soldiers, dancing flowers, and a beautiful pas de deux by the Prince and Princess. You’ll walk out of the theater smiling and hoping to dream of sugar plums.

Fiesta Navidad

Join us for one of Orange County’s most beloved annual holiday traditions as the GRAMMY® Award-winning Mariachi Los Camperos returns to Segerstrom Center with Fiesta Navidad. The group has become a firm favorite at the Center during the holidays, performing here for more than 20 years.

The mariachi group was created in 1961 by Natividad “Nati” Cano. With Nati leading the band for the next 50-plus years, the group played at prestigious venues through the United States and Mexico, including Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, the Getty Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Mr. Cano played a fundamental role in the development of mariachi music in the United States by training and mentoring new generations of mariachi musicians. They were the first Mariachi group to perform in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Nati, who passed away in 2014, has been succeeded by Jesus “Chuy” Guzman, who continues the rich music and cultural tradition of mariachi.

Filled with music and dance, this colorful celebration of Mexican holiday traditions is perfect for the whole family.
