Welcome to Outside SCR here at the beautiful Mission San Juan Capistrano. What a joy to celebrate our fourth season of this inimitable programming in partnership with one of Orange County’s premier cultural touchstones. We are happy you are here and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this work.
Driven by imaginative and innovative storytelling, The Old Man and The Old Moon has something for everyone. Its musical narrative and timeless message of hope moved me as I witnessed the wonder that comes with a deep and meaningful “search.” I’ll say no more as it’s best that it unfolds before you with the twilight, as we wait for the real moon to make its majestic nightly entrance.
I want to offer a note of thanks here to our company as we celebrate the final production of the 60th season and embark on a new chapter across several areas of our beloved South Coast Repertory. There is much to anticipate even as we remain keenly connected to our legacy. There is time, too, for reflection and introspection. All that seems appropriate on these grounds surrounded by family members of all ages engaged in the time-honored, beautiful art of live theatre. Thank you for prioritizing your time and resources and centering them on the arts and this unique experience of Outside SCR. I’m always curious about your experiences—and a sincere “thank you” to so many of you who have shared your thoughts with me—and I’m available to you. Email is below my signature.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy our evening under the “moon” and look forward to “searching” with you soon, as we investigate opportunities ahead for SCR.
Warmly,
David Ivers Artistic Director, Ivers@scr.org
Gratitude for a Mission Accomplished
Greetings and an enthusiastic welcome to Outside SCR!
As we embark on the fourth year at Mission San Juan Capistrano, we are both excited and happy to be back again, performing The Old Man and The Old Moon and sharing an unforgettable and magical evening of storytelling in this beautiful setting. We do so with the knowledge that this is our final summer at the Mission and with hearts full of gratitude for so many who made this possible.
We are indebted to our visionary Board of Trustees, our talented and devoted staff, artists and volunteers and the very generous support of our Honorary Producers and supporters. Their passion and commitment are inspiring and allow us to create the unique theatrical experience that is Outside SCR.
We also remain grateful to Mechelle Lawrence Adams and her wonderful team for embracing the idea of a partnership to bring live theatre to this historic setting, spotlighting our two organizations to a larger community. We are fortunate to have received the guidance and support of our colleagues at the Mission and we celebrate our collaboration, achievements and the friendships formed from working together.
Last but certainly not least, Outside SCR would not be possible without you. Your attendance and support make tonight a meaningful experience and help build a bridge into another community outside of our home in Costa Mesa. It’s because of you that we do what we do and we are eternally grateful.
As the sun sets, the moon rises and the folk music begins, we’re so glad you joined us on this summer evening.
Cheers and enjoy!
Paula Tomei Managing Director
Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory, founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson, is led by Artistic Director David Ivers and Managing Director Paula Tomei. SCR is recognized as one of the leading professional theatres in the United States. It is committed to theatre that illuminates the compelling personal and social issues of our time, not only on its stages but through its wide array of education and engagement programs.
While its productions represent a balance of classic and modern theatre, SCR is renowned for The Lab@SCR, its extensive new-play development program, which includes one of the nation’s largest commissioning programs for emerging, mid-career and established writers and composers. Each year, SCR showcases some of the country’s best new plays at the Pacific Playwrights Festival, which attracts theatre professionals from across the country. Of SCR’s more than 546 productions, one-quarter have been world premieres, whose subsequent stagings achieved enormous success throughout America and around the world. SCR-developed works have garnered two Pulitzer Prizes and eight Pulitzer nominations, several Obie Awards and scores of major new-play awards.
The David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center is home to the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage, the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage and the 94-seat Nicholas Studio. SCR is a professional, nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation, partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, foundations, corporations and individuals. It is a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), a national collective-bargaining association; and Arts Orange County, the official local arts agency.
The theatre operates under an agreement between LORT; Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers; the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, an independent national labor union; and United Scenic Artists, the union of scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers.
We are pleased to support South Coast Repertory in our beautiful home of San Juan Capistrano at the historic Mission. At St. Margaret’s we believe in the transforming power of the arts and that everyone is on an artistic journey. Through experiences in the visual arts, music, dance, theater and technical arts, St. Margaret’s students of all ages discover personal interests and the fundamentals of art forms, cultivate their talents and valuable life skills of communication, creativity, empathy, persistence, vision and voice, and nurture the artists within.
A Sweet, Song-filled Conclusion
Welcome to South Coast Repertory’s Outside SCR production of The Old Man and The Old Moon, the sweet, song-filled conclusion to our theatre’s milestone 60th season. As President of the theatre’s Board of Trustees, I am delighted that you are here with us tonight. We are deeply grateful to our friends at Mission San Juan Capistrano for their partnership in making Outside SCR possible these past four years.
The annual summertime performances “under the stars” at the Mission were introduced in 2021 in the midst of the pandemic as a means of presenting high-quality, uplifting theatre in a safe, friendly and casual setting. This approach continues with The Old Man and The Old Moon, an epic journey filled with mystery and romance, all set to a musical score that is both wonderfully fresh and welcomingly familiar. In all, it’s a marvelous and fitting finale to our 60th season!
Looking ahead to SCR’s 2024-25 season, we’ve planned an eclectic mix that includes music, comedy, drama and three world premieres. We’ll also provide high-quality education and community outreach activities such as the Theatre for Young Audiences series for elementary school students, free Neighborhood Conservatory theatre workshops in low-income schools, free and deeply discounted student tickets through the Theatre Access and MyStage programs—and more.
As we approach the end of our budget year, every donation is critical to helping us stay on track. If you didn’t get a chance to donate this season, now is a great time to make your gift. Give now at scr.org/donate or scan the QR code below. Your support makes performances like this possible.
Please enjoy The Old Man and The Old Moon and join us at SCR in the upcoming season.
Sincerely,
Talya Nevo-Hacohen President, Board of Trustees, South Coast Repertory
SCR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit theatre. We rely on annual, tax-deductible contributions to cover approximately 30% of the cost to produce each season of plays and offer education and outreach programs each year.

Welcome to the Mission
On behalf of the Mission Preservation Foundation, I am so happy you chose to join us this summer for Outside SCR at Mission San Juan Capistrano featuring The Old Man and The Old Moon in the historic Central Courtyard.
Here at Mission San Juan Capistrano, we celebrate the arts, culture, and traditions every day. However, it had been 100 years since the Mission, as a landmark, offered theatre experiences on its hallowed grounds. This exciting partnership gave the opportunity to do something important when the pandemic forced our mutual closures and ceased our entities’ routine operations.
As you experience the production of The Old Man and The Moon, I hope you leave inspired to support both SCR and the Mission. Our entities are nonprofits that rely on the support of an engaged and generous community. For nonprofits like ours, the margins of profit are thin, but the impact of your investment is priceless. We both need the public’s continued goodwill, support, and stewardship. Your attendance this evening is an endorsement that places like the Mission still matter, and that the live outdoor theatre experience is like no other. We thank you for being here.
Working alongside South Coast Repertory to deliver an outdoor theatre experience here for the past four
summers has been not only special, but historic. SCR’s care of the site and the very special effort to design a stage that could beautifully fit in with the setting is beyond impressive. Kudos! In fact, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Paula Tomei, David Ivers, and their entire team on this outstanding program/ partnership. We thank them all for their passion, professionalism, dedication, and total commitment to the success of the program. (We also wish the amazing Paula Tomei all the best on her retirement as well. It is well deserved, for sure!).
Finally, as the Mission’s Executive Director, I also want to take a moment to invite you to visit our official website at: missionsjc.com to plan a return visit, guided or audio tour, to experience a special event such as Capistrano Lights during the holiday season. We would welcome your return and hope to find you walking the path in years to come.
I hope you enjoy the show…and as we say here at the Mission, “Vaya Con Dios!”

MAKING A MOON FOR THE MISSION: Five Questions for Director
South Coast Repertory’s production of The Old Man and The Old Moon is directed by Kim Martin-Cotten—a longtime fan of PigPen Theatre Co., the group of seven musician/performers who co-created the piece. Prior to the start of rehearsals, Martin-Cotten answered some questions about the musical play—and building a thrilling, multigenerational experience for audiences at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
South Coast Repertory: When were you first introduced to The Old Man and The Old Moon?
Kim Martin-Cotten: Around 2011, PigPen Theatre Co., a group of performers out of Carnegie Mellon, was starting to do some work in New York, and I saw a piece they were developing at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn. They were wonderful musicians and terrific storytellers, and they were building stories that felt like ‘new campfire tales.’ Not long after, The Old Man and The Old Moon had a run off-Broadway in 2012, but I didn’t get to see it then. It was later, when I was working at Kansas City Rep [which produced the show in 2022], that I became acquainted with it.
This production is at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. How did that influence your artistic concept?
Well, the Mission is such a magical place. So, for me, it’s all about how the music and the story of the play meets the magic of the space. It’s an opportunity to bring theatre into an environment that already has deep beauty and a vibrant history.
The challenge is telling a story about the moon when we still have sunlight with us for 45 minutes. So, our folktale begins with a three-dimensional version of the moon in a handheld form that then transitions into a representation through lighting as night falls. We’re leaning into a kind of theatrical magic that isn’t ‘how did do they do that?’
Kim Martin-Cotten
but instead ‘look at what they’re doing.’ It’s visible shapeshifting.
Will you talk a little bit about the music in the show?
Much of the story centers on the nautical world of the British Isles. So, Pig Pen’s indie-folk rock sound also nods to the sea shanty in this show. There are guitars, a bit of accordion, some fiddle and piano and lots of percussive sounds. We have a wonderful pair of music directors, Matt MacNelly and Armando Gutierrez. Together, we’re attempting to shift the music’s sound a little bit so it retains it’s original spirit, but also with a bit of blues and rock mixed in. I hope it will be as much a wonderful concert as it is a piece of theatre.
How will you and the ensemble build the storytelling in this production?
The cast includes some super musicians who play multiple instruments and some actors who are incredibly physical performers. On top of that, there are a few who have a lot of experience with puppetry. We’ve assembled a great complement— seven super performers with multiple skillsets. Together, we’ll layer in the musical component first, and then we’ll start moving into movement and puppetry. The music will be the bed of the show, and then we’ll add the physical punctuation.
What aspects of your personal artistry are you excited to explore in The Old Man and The Old Moon?
The Old Man and The Old Moon is the kind of music-driven, physical storytelling that I love to direct. It tells a magical story that offers tremendous fun as well as great heart, and I love the puzzle of moving through the landscape of this epic adventure with the daily discovery of inventive solutions and figuring out how to do that in imaginative ways. And if you dream it up the right way, this story can delight audiences of all ages.

Your Theatrical Journey Doesn’t End Here
by Brian Robin
The epic theatrical trip you’re taking tonight with The Old Man and The Old Moon is just the beginning of the journey. Come for the ingenious creativity of PigPen Theatre Co., at a historic mission, come back to experience the entertaining, laughter-filled, mouthwatering adventures of Little Shop of Horrors. Then, stay for the holiday tradition and timeless classic that is A Christmas Carol .
South Coast Repertory’s 2024-25 season embraces the old, the new and everything in between. It is a season filled with the joyous, the poignant and the thought-provoking—all with one element in common.
They are all imaginative stories, deftly and entertainingly told.
“ We are a theatre that fosters a wide variety of significant productions, from major musicals to exploring stories about different cultures and communities—both inside and outside our community. That a ll feels exciting to me,” SCR Artistic Director Ivers said. “This is a really engaging season that has a lot of thought to it.”
The season’s journey begins with Little Shop of Horrors, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, music
by Alan Menken and based on the film by the late Roger Corman. The cult-classic that moved from Broadway to Hollywood and into American popular culture runs Sept. 21-Oct. 19 on the Segerstrom Stage.
Following Little Shop of Horrors is the first of the season’s three world premieres, all products of The Lab@SCR, the theatre’s renowned new play development initiative. Joan by Daniel Goldstein, running Oct. 27-Nov. 24 on the Julianne Argyros Stage, is the latest installment of the American Icon series. Directed by Ivers, this comedic and soul-baring play about legendary comedian Joan Rivers tells the story of a mom and an entertainment trailblazer who were one and the same. Ivers describes it as “a surprising comedy about a mother and a daughter trying to find their place.”
“We’re opening the season with a lot of joy between Little Shop of Horrors and Joan,” Ivers said.
The joy continues into the holidays with SCR’s annual tradition, A Christmas Carol . It closes 2024 with its 44th season, Nov. 30-Dec. 24, on the Segerstrom Stage. SCR Founding Member Richard Doyle returns as Ebenezer Scrooge.
The new year begins with a name familiar to SCR—Sanaz Toossi. The Orange County native got her artistic start at the SCR Conservatory. Now, she returns as a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright with
her critically acclaimed Wish You Were Here. The story of five friends navigating the turmoil of pre- and post-revolution Iran as they try finding the bond that once connected them runs Jan. 12-Feb. 2, 2025 on the Julianne Argyros Stage.
“Her play is about finding home and we have the honor of her saying ‘yes’ to coming back to SCR and Orange County with this beautiful play,” Ivers said. “Those parallels are obviously important to us, having Orange County and Southern California represented in our season. Sanaz started out in our Conservatory, and her mother and family have been involved with this organization.”
One year after his George Gershwin Alone played to sell-out audiences, acclaimed pianist and storyteller Hershey Felder returns to SCR Feb. 19-March 2 for Rachmaninoff and the Tsar. This new musical play brings audiences on a mystical musical journey, with Felder playing the famous Russian composer and expat alongside British-Italian actor Jonathan Silvestri as Tsar Nicholas II.
Felder also brings his popular Great American Songbook Sing-Along to the Segerstrom Stage for one night—March 3, 2025.
Following that comes another journey of joy and whimsy—the Theatre for Young Audiences and Families production of The Incredible Book Eating Boy,
book by Madhuri Shekar, music by Christian Magby and lyrics by Christian Albright, based on the book by Oliver Jeffers. Directed by SCR Artistic and Audience Engagement Associate H. Adam Harris, this hilarious family musical celebrates the joys of reading through a boy who devours knowledge by eating books. It runs Feb. 28-Mar. 16, 2025 on the Julianne Argyros Stage.
The second world premiere is yet to be announced at the time of printing this program. But it w ill run April 5-May 4, 2025 on the Segerstrom Stage and serve as one of two anchor production during the May 2-4 Pacific Playwrights Festival (PPF).
The second anchor is a PPF product—The Staircase by Noa Gardner. A featured reading at the 2023 PPF, this mysterious story about a Hawaiian mother and son holding on, letting go and figuring out how to cope with an uncertain future is the season’s third world premiere. It runs April 27-May 18, 2025 on the Julianne Argyros Stage.
“Our audiences are going to get something very few theatres offer. All these different kinds of works are represented by all these different communities,” Ivers said. “I’m really excited. I don’t choose plays in a bubble. This is a reflection of what’s important and we’re excited to be doing these things that are part of the tradition and legacy at SCR—while having a sharp eye to what’s ahead.”

IN CLASS AND IN THE COMMUNITY
Putting the ‘Creator’ in Creativity
It’s low-tech theatre that becomes high-art storytelling. Putting every element of the craft— music, acting, puppetry, props, costumes, sets— into a tale that enlightens and entertains. But above all, to Hisa Takakuwa, it educates.
When she watches The Old Man and The Old Moon by PigPen Theatre Co., Takakuwa—SCR’s Conservatory and Educational Programs Director—sees the blueprint for SCR’s award-winning conservatory.
“ The Old Man and The Old Moon is so much about a multitalented ensemble of actors coming together to tell a story inventively and with great imagination,” Takakuwa said. “The skills people are seeing on stage are the very skills we’re trying to encourage— creativity, problem-solving, working together, exploring and using imagination. We want our students to understand themselves, others, the world and the entire human experience.”
In everything she and her teaching staff of professional theatre artists do, from conducting classes in acting, playwriting, musical theatre and improv, to directing advanced Youth Conservatory students in productions, Takakuwa stresses the concept of building not only individual skills, but group and ensemble skills. And who better to shine an example-casting spotlight on than Alex Falberg, Ben Ferguson, Curtis Gillen, Ryan Melia, Matt Nuernberger, Arya Shahi and Dan Weschler?
The seven members of PigPen Theatre Co. met as drama students at Carnegie Mellon University. They began writing music together, then writing plays that blended that music with imagination and creativity. Equally as important, this creativity came in a package—an ensemble package that combined the myriad talents each member possessed. Acting, singing, writing, creating props out of ordinary items—even puppeteering? All of it is in play.
Every PigPen play highlights teamwork, creative storytelling and the pushing of boundaries toward a common goal. Not coincidentally, those are the lessons Takakuwa wants to impart to both youth and adult students at SCR’s Conservatory.
“At its heart, theatre is an ensemble skill that is about developing and giving of yourself with others,” Takakuwa said. “I think what’s good is we approach
training as a way to build artistic skills and life skills. That means also building individual skills and ensemble and community, or company, skills.
“By teaching the arts in this fashion, we’re hoping that we’re encouraging growth and understanding that can serve young people throughout their lives—regardless of whether or not they pursue the arts professionally. We’re hoping at the individual level, that young people can find, develop, explore creativity and build self-expression through acting training. And that perhaps even more importantly, they can find an ability to work constructively with other people.”
Takakuwa doesn’t have far to go to find examples of how well this process-based approach works. Among SCR’s Youth Conservatory alums are pediatric neurosurgeons, college professors, teachers, attorneys and—yes—a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright in Sanaz Toossi.
Like PigPen, these alums shot for the moon. And reached it.
