In the most current nine seasons alone, over 170 productions have been selected for presentation, including 38 world premieres. Seventeen productions have subsequently been produced in New York. imothy Regler was raised in Los Angeles and exposed to live theatre at an early age thanks to school ﬁeld trips to local theatres. The Bob Baker Marionettes left him awestruck at age four, and later, a production of The Glass Menagerie inspired him to pursue an acting career. When it became abundantly clear acting was not his vocation, he began a successful career producing and directing television shows, including 17 years as executive producer of Judge Judy.

A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE Tim gives generously to Center Theatre Group as a member of its Artistic Director’s Circle, a group dedicated to supporting Michael Ritchie’s artistic vision for the company. Tim’s philanthropy is motivated by a desire to provide Los Angeles youth the same access to the arts he had growing up and, hopefully, to influence the trajectory of their lives. A longtime cheerleader for CTG’s Education and Community Partnerships programs, Tim focused his ADC support on the world premiere of Kimber Lee’s different words for the same thing at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (see sidebar). In addition to the professional production, a group of students at the Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts is mounting Lee’s play under the guidance of teaching artist Leslie Ishii — a professional artist also trained as an educator — and members of CTG’s artistic staff. This is the first time CTG has offered a program of this kind, creating a unique way for these budding artists to discover their creative voices and develop their craft.

LEAVING A LEGACY This innovative way to nurture student creativity appealed to Tim, the former chair of CTG’s Education and Community Partnerships committee. He feels today’s technology limits young people’s exposure to live theatre. “As the generation grooming young people today, I believe we have a duty to share our legacy and invite them to experience what we bring to the table in the arts.” CTG turns 50 in 2017, and Tim plans to be around when the company turns 100 so he can welcome more students to one of its three venues ... as his guests. “I’ll only be 112,” he says. “It’s not outside the realm at this point.” ○

Tim retired from his producing duties last April and is busier than ever. When not at the theatre, he enjoys music and dance, entertaining close friends at his home outside of San Diego, and anything that sparks his creativity.

Kimber Lee: The play is about life in this particular town. It’s about the ripples through the network of relationships in this town. But it’s also about … in a very real way, the people who live in the place where I grew up. There’s a very particular type of resilience that they have. … There are people who have experienced unimaginable pain, and I’m in such awe of the way that people can pick up the pieces and keep going, because they have to. The only other option is to lay down and quit, and the fact that you can sustain that kind of a blow, and that much damage, and get yourself back up and just keep going is such a beautiful thing to me. … So that spirit kind of pervades all of these stories … these people are connected to each other and related to each other, and you start to see the places where the connections are frayed, and the places where they’re still so strong. That’s a beautiful thing to me. A Harmonic Interlude

n March 22, Center Theatre Group Corporate Circle members, donors, students and educators gathered at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for Season Celebration 2014. This annual gala celebrates the generosity of the Corporate Circle and raises money for Center Theatre Group’s Education and Community Partnerships programs. The evening began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner in the Eva and Marc Stern Grand Ballroom. Highlights of the event included a Q&A with Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, creators of the musical Harmony, and a jaw-dropping performance by Pablo Lopez, the second place national finalist in the 2013 August Wilson Monologue Competition. Following dinner, guests made their way to the Ahmanson Theatre, where a special performance of Harmony capped off the evening. ○

Overcoming Adversity Beaty Reveals the Journey Behind His Art

ver 200 CTG donors, educators and students gathered on March 17 for an Up Close Dialogue with Daniel Beaty, author and performer of the world-premiere production of The Tallest Tree in the Forest.

Sharing stories from his book Transforming Pain to Power, Beaty described a painful upbringing with an older brother and father, both addicted to drugs. Footage of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired him to overcome adversity and discover his purpose, he said. Beaty then electriﬁed the audience with an excerpt from The Tallest Tree, the true story of Paul Robeson, and a reading of his poem “Knock Knock,” two riveting examples of his talent. Beaty then encouraged the audience to think about what obscured their freedom so that they might create a better future for themselves and their communities. He achieved this in his life by transforming the pains of his childhood into the creative power that drives his career, he said. Beaty’s experiences have led him to advocate for a fairer incarceration system and to mentor students at Venice High School as part of a program called P.O.P.S. (Pain of the Prison System). ○

n April 5, members of The Fringe @ Center Theatre Group, a philanthropic group of young professionals, explored the remarkable story of the Comedian Harmonists with a backstage tour of Harmony. Attendees were transported to the historical milieu of 1920s Germany, when the Comedian Harmonists — an extraordinary group of six friends — took the world by storm with their signature blend of sophisticated close harmonies and uproarious stage antics. ○

HERE ARE SOME TIDBITS THE FRINGE LEARNED ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: • There were 21 cast members, all under the age of 32. • There were over 400 individual vintage and custommade costume pieces in the show. Some of the most memorable costumes were handmade, including the Rabbi’s wool suit and the singers’ purple suit jackets. The costume designer, Tobin Ost, drew inspiration from the recent ﬁlm adaptation of Anna Karenina in creating the show’s style. • Many of the props were replicas of original pieces from the 1920s and ’30s, including the record, telegram, German newspaper and German currency. • A wall of windows comprised the backdrop. Different scenes projected onto the windows transported the cast and the audience from place to place. • The set was built at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, and included an automated bridge, a red curtain and columns that came in and out of various scenes. The bridge alone weighed over 1,000 pounds.

The Shop is Now Open Celebrating Theatre as Part of Everyday Life in Boyle Heights

n March 29, people of all ages gathered at Center Theatre Group’s prop and costume shop in Boyle Heights to celebrate The Shop, a new program that welcomes community members into our home and makes theatre a part of everyday life. A free festival with art-making activities, performances, live music from local band Cuicani, and tours of the 9,945-square-foot warehouse launched this exciting new effort. Programming for The Shop began in January, when CTG presented a series of free play readings and costume displays in partnership with local libraries and arts organizations. From April to June, the programming continued at The Shop with free workshops in mask-making, fabric dying, furniture upholstery and more. Community members connected with one another, explored their creativity and practiced theatre skills, which CTG hopes will enrich their personal and professional lives. Activities are hosted bilingually in Spanish and English. Audience member Alicia Almazan, who attended a reading at the Robert Louis Stevenson Library, said: “Nunca había presenciado algo así. Qué bueno! Sería bonito que vinieran más seguido, tenerlos en nuestra comunidad, porque no tenemos oportunidad de ver estos eventos.”

Enter Vanya Pierce Entertains Donors With Stories

aughter erupted from a dining room at the Jonathan Club as four-time Emmy Awardwinner David Hyde Pierce entertained a group of 80 donors for a Theatre Artists Dinner in March. Alongside Artistic Director Michael Ritchie, Pierce shared stories about his career and his most recent role as director of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the Mark Taper Forum. A DRAMATIC BEGINNING Pierce knew from an early age he had dramatic leanings. As a child he liked falling down the stairs of his parents’ home, pretending he had been shot to death. “There was something theatrical about that,” he said. “Those were the early warning signs.” He later aspired to be a concert pianist but eventually realized his limitations. After dabbling in acting, he decided to pursue it seriously and graduated from Yale with degrees in theatre and English. One of his professors at the time encouraged him to seek work in New York rather than attend drama school in London.

As luck would have it, Pierce auditioned for a new play, Beyond Therapy, which was written by Christopher Durang (who also wrote Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike). His first professional job was the Broadway show. “It was the greatest experience you could possibly have — until the opening night, and The New York Times hated it,” he said. “We closed in two weeks.”

COMING FULL CIRCLE Durang and Pierce nevertheless maintained their friendship. “He came to me with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” Pierce said. “He had actually written the character of Vanya for himself and decided not to do it. That is when he contacted me, and fortunately I was able to do it. It is such a tour de force for an actor.” Pierce proceeded to play the part off and on Broadway, earning standing ovations from enthusiastic audiences and, eventually, a Tony Award nomination for best actor in 2013. “The feeling that I always got from the audience in that standing ovation is gratitude,” he said. “It was palpable. I never experienced that before. This was something about people being so grateful to have been taken to wherever this play takes you, in the way that it takes you.” ○

This production is part of a world tour that started in Toronto, and after Los Angeles will head to Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. An international cast has been assembled for this production from Canada, the United States of America, Australia and the United Kingdom. The performance lasts approximately two hours and 30 minutes including an intermission. This production of The Last Confession opened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Toronto, on April 19, 2014. The Last Confession was first performed on April 27, 2007, at the Chichester Festival Theatre. It subsequently toured the U.K. and was produced by Paul Elliott & Duncan C. n 1962, Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council. His objective was to open the windows of the Church to the world. The Council began an overhaul of the Church’s laws and adopted an approach of reconciliation and collaboration towards the other faiths of the world.

connections, had been hired by Paul to act as the Church’s financial consultant. By the last year of Paul’s reign, Sindona was lodged in an American prison. His replacement as consultant to the Vatican was an Italian financier called Roberto Calvi, a man with an equally murky financial past.

John died in 1963 before the Council’s work was completed. His successor was Paul VI. In the 15 years during Paul’s reign, the reactionary element of the Church, primarily located within the Vatican’s administrative body known as the Curia, sought to undo all that had been accomplished by the Second Vatican Council and to restore the concept of an autocratic and aloof church that had existed prior to John XXIII.

Paul died in 1978. The Cardinals elected a compromise candidate — Albino Luciani, a Cardinal from Venice who chose the name Pope John Paul I. In the 33 days of his reign, he turned out to be far more liberal than the reactionaries ever suspected. The night before he died, he had decided to remove the most senior of the reactionaries from power as well as Bishop Marcinkus who headed the scandal-ridden Vatican Bank. Because he died the next day, his reforms were never implemented.

Paul was elected by the liberal faction of the Church to implement the reforms of the Vatican Council. However, he turned out to be incapable of decisive action and instead equivocated between the positions of both sides. In fact, John XXIII had referred to Paul when he was a Cardinal as his ‘Hamlet Cardinal.’ In the last year of Paul’s reign, the struggle intensified. Paul was nearly 80 years old and in poor health. The reactionary forces within the Church began maneuvering in an effort to elect a conservative Pope who would do away with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The liberals, on the other hand, were mostly outside Rome and only loosely organized. At the same time, the Church was in a state of economic crisis. The reforms of the Vatican Council had significantly increased the costs of administering the Church. Michele Sindona, a man with mafia

Questions were raised in the press as to whether Pope John Paul I had been murdered and a battle developed among the Cardinals over the election of the next Pope. The play mirrors the confession of Cardinal Benelli, the man who had engineered the election of Pope John Paul I in 1978. That confession recounts the events that occurred before, during and immediately after the Pope’s 33-day reign, and Benelli’s ambition to become Pope himself. Dominic Muldowney became Director of Music at the National Theatre in 1981, and held the post for 16 years. He has amassed a formidable list of accomplishments over the past three decades for films, television and theatre — his score for Michael Radford’s film of George Orwell’s 1984 remains one of the most unique film soundtracks ever to be recorded. CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE. Festival 2014 is a landmark season for Chichester. It marks the reopening of the newly refurbished Chichester Festival Theatre, following a major capital project, RENEW, to restore and upgrade its Grade II* listed building. EDWARD L. RADA (Managing Director) returned to Center Theatre Group in 2011 after previously serving as CTG’s Chief Financial Officer for 12 years (1996–2008). BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 24th season at CTG. Previously, he managed Broadway and touring productions including Tru, Born Yesterday, The Gospel at Colonus, Annie, A Chorus Line, Working, The Wiz, and Legends!, which premiered at the Ahmanson Theatre in 1986 and starred Mary Martin and Carol Channing. Doug is a member of the Achievement Hall of Fame of Chagrin Falls Schools in Ohio and a graduate of Albion College. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013 Doug received The Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award. LINDSAY ALLBAUGH (Producing Associate) is a member of Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff and has served in varying capacities for the past nine years. Lindsay also serves as the artistic coordinator for CTG’s Sherwood Award, which supports emerging Los Angeles artists. In addition to her work for CTG, Lindsay is the co-artistic director at the Elephant Theatre Company in Hollywood. Producing credits include the upcoming production of different words for the same thing at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and most recently The Nether at the KDT, and Waiting for Godot at the Taper. Directing credits include the West Coast premieres of 100 Saints You Should Know and Never Tell (Elephant), the world premiere of Revelation (Elephant), Supernova (Elephant) and Kate Crackernuts, Gray City, Aloha Say the Pretty Girls (Harvard/ART). since 2006 on more than 50 musicals, plays and special events including both pre-Broadway productions and Broadway tours. Some of his favorites include Follies, God of Carnage and The Black Rider (having previously worked on Robert Wilson productions in Boston, Houston and São Paulo, Brazil). Prior to CTG, he was the marketing manager for the last two of his 11 seasons with The Santa Fe Opera, and worked in various capacities at Yale Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theatre and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, among others. He graduated magna cum laude with his studies in film and theatre from Washington University in St. Louis, and received an MFA in theatre management from the Yale School of Drama. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the ® theatre — including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays ® nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989 Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

nce upon a time there was a chair Not a big chair, not a small chair. Just a chair. The problem was it no longer fit in. Mother said, “That chair has got to go!” Father said, “But that chair belonged to my mother. I can’t part with it.” And so it went. The poor lonely chair lived in a corner gathering dust. One day mother had enough and she said, “If that chair isn’t gone by tomorrow, then you go!” Father fretted. What to do? Sister fretted, what to do? Along came wise Aunt Jane who said, “I have the best idea! LET’S DONATE THE CHAIR TO COUNCIL THRIFT. The chair will be bought by a nice person and it will have a nice new life in a nice new home. Plus, it will help NCJW/LA to provide services for at-risk women, children and families!” Father was relieved. Sister was relieved. And mom, well, she went out and bought a nice new chair.

June 22 - July 27 From New York’s Shakespeare in the Park to Balboa Park, Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein makes his debut on the Globe’s outdoor stage with one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Despite the prejudices in Venice, the brilliant general Othello excels both on the battlefield and in the halls of state. But when he marries Desdemona, his envious lieutenant Iago sets in motion a diabolical plan to destroy him. With a superb cast led by Blair Underwood (“L.A.
