Eat Your Vegetables Melrose newcomer and plant-based eatery Avant Garde Bistro puts the spotlight on seasonal vegetables in an array of cold and hot dishes. A mostly California wine list includes natural wines and a selection of low-abv craft cocktails inspired by what’s in season. Crossroads Kitchen, one of the first restaurants in L.A. to bring fine dining to plant-based fare, has been a favorite of high-profile celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Beyonce. Chef Tal Ronnen crafts unique dishes such as “fried calamari” from mushrooms and an eggplant fillet that tastes like the real deal but rest assured, everything on the menu, including the Feta cheese and ice cream, is vegan.

Market Venice Tucked away in an alley one of the oldest buildings in Venice Beach lies Market Venice, a new indoor-outdoor restaurant just a few short blocks from the ocean. The menu is a love letter to Italy. Many of the ingredients are hand-picked from the Santa Monica Farmers Market early in the morning. Consider the melt-in-your-mouth sea bream garnished with tangy Meyer lemons and the juicy heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella and lemon basil. The menu features a selection of offbeat wine and craft cocktails that taste as good as they look. Surf ’n’ Turf Mastro’s, the high-end restaurant chain, opened its ninth California location in the downtown area, adjacent to the vibrant L.A. Live entertainment complex and Crypto. com Arena. Mastro’s Ocean Club sits in a 14,000-squarefoot space and specializes in fresh seafood, raw bar offerings, a two-foot-tall seafood tower, and creative

[1] AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC IT’S THE FOURTH mostattended aquarium in the nation—and for good reason. Located in Long Beach, the aquarium showcases more than 100 exhibits and offers several
hands-on live encounters. Open through April 2023, the new Babies! exhibit allows visitors to come face to face with rescued baby sharks, tiny color-changing cuttlefish, mini sea jellies, and a young desert tortoise.

for the Whole Family [2] LA BREA TAR PITS AND MUSEUM THIS LANDMARK SPOT appeals to adults and children alike. Outside, you can view the active tar pits for free, which showcases the remains of plants and animals
dating back to the Ice Age. Inside the museum, you’ll be able to watch scientists at work as they clean and identify fossils. Younger kids will be impressed by the complete skeletons of extraordinary animals
like saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons. The museum itself is fairly small and unintimidating for toddlers, and the large outdoor park area is a great spot for a family picnic.

Interactive displays (think: game tables and a jelly lab) can keep the kids engaged. Pro tip: The aquarium is conveniently situated between several family-friendly restaurants, perfect for a pre- or -post-visit meal.

[3] CALIFORNIA SCIENCE CENTER WHETHER YOUR LITTLE one is a budding scientist or not, the California Science Center, located downtown, is a top contender when it comes to family fun. The main exhibits are indoors, when your family needs a break from the sun. Start your visit with the 3D Under the Sea IMAX show before hitting up the center’s world-class exhibits and attractions. Must-sees
include the immersive womb room in the Life! Beginnings exhibit, which follows the human journey from conception to birth. For aviation lovers, Air & Space features a unique collection of giant aircraft, spacecraft, and space probes.
[4] ROOFTOP CINEMA CLUB LOOKING FOR AN experience that takes advantage of breathtaking rooftop views? Book a movie

screening at one of Rooftop Cinema Club’s three locations: the Arts District, Downtown L.A., and El Segundo. The alfresco experience features comfortable chairs and loveseats, classic movie snacks, and stunning skylines that’ll make for an idyllic photo op. Family-friendly films are scheduled before 4:30 p.m., but doors open well before the screening, so everyone can engage in lawn games such as cornhole and giant Jenga.
[5] LOS ANGELES ZOO AND BOTANICAL GARDENS THE ZOO IS home to more than 2,100 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles and features a variety of exhibits and experiences that will captivate the little ones. Check out the Elephants of Asia exhibit, which sprawls across 6.5 acres and offers up four areas for viewing these gentle giants. The Rainforest of the Americas is also

Today’s food halls are a natural evolution of suburban mall food courts—just slicker, sleeker, and perhaps a little more stimulating for those who’d choose currywurst over corn dogs. These multiconcept meccas are proliferating across Los Angeles, often serving as culinary incubators for rising chefs and allowing established names to expand their repertoires. They’re the perfect way to experience the local food scene and feast on some of the city’s best bites in one go. After all, why dine at just one restaurant when you can sample irresistible offerings from several? Here are seven epicurean paradises designed to spoil you with a profusion of tasty choices.
▶ Grand Central Market Over
the past decade, this 105-year-old emporium located in downtown —a foodie favorite and tourist attraction—has undergone a renaissance that mirrors the area’s own revitalization. Once a hub for grocery and deli purveyors, the market has evolved into a collective of conceptdriven stalls from entrepreneurial chefs, even serving as a launchpad for some of L.A.’s hottest food trends (we’re looking at you, Eggslut sandwiches). Today, it hosts about 38 vendors—a mix of legacy tenants, like China Cafe and Roast to Go, as well as newer, homegrown talent. Within these walls, you’ll find a veritable melting pot of flavors: Ramen Hood turns out all-vegan noods; Thai
restaurant Sticky Rice highlights organic, locally sourced ingredients; Sarita’s Pupuseria produces handmade Salvadoran pupusas; and Shiku serves Korean comfort food inspired by dosirak (packed lunch boxes).
▶ Northridge Eats Tucked within a strip mall, this small but mighty newcomer gathers several Asian flavors under one roof to meet the growing demand for Asian food in the San Fernando Valley. Its four restaurants take your taste buds on a journey through East Asia and Southeast Asia: Inspired by Singapore’s famed hawker food center, Maxwell Chicken Rice makes such exceptionally good Hainan chicken that some Singaporeans call it a
taste of home. At Kotsu, you’ll slurp down Fukuoka-style tonkotsu ramen in 12-hour pork bone broth. Akafuji does fresh nigiri and handrolls, but it’s their refreshingly affordable omakase that has everyone talking. Meanwhile, Mee Dee Thai Kitchen offers a modernized spin on Thai fare—sprinkling tom yum seasoning over shoestring fries and pairing hot chicken sliders with green curry aioli.

▶ SteelCraft Long Beach Built
with repurposed shipping containers, this urban haven pays homage to Long Beach’s claim as the secondlargest port in the world. The openair setup—colorful containers, string lights overhead, and communalstyle seating outfitted with reclaimed wood tables—practically begs for a family outing. Thankfully, SteelCraft’s eight vendors make it easy to please every palate (even picky little ones!) with a lineup of craft brews and strong coffees, artisanal burgers and pizzas, street tacos and burritos, refreshing acai bowls, and Belgian waffles served either sweet or savory. Its stellar curation is only part of what makes SteelCraft
so appealing; the space is also a lively community gathering spot with concerts, trivia nights, and other events.
▶ Citizen Public Market This
expansive 7,500-square-foot space is more than a market-hall—it’s also a fascinating relic of Culver City history, located where the local newspaper was published in 1929. The architectural landmark was also the city’s first structure to get on the National Register of Historic Places. Now you can drink in the Art Deco and Beaux Arts details while you drink up a well-made latte at Goodboybob Coffee or, in the evening, a craft cocktail at Bar Bohemien on the inviting outdoor rooftop, where comedy and trivia nights often take place. Food-wise, Citizen has secured eateries from some of L.A.’s culinary visionaries—Nancy Silverton’s Pizzette and Brandon Kida’s Go Go Chicken among them—in addition to outposts of cult-favorites like Jolly Oyster.

Santa Monica THE COASTAL CITY THAT NEIGHBORS MALIBU, VENICE, PACIFIC PALISADES, AND BRENTWOOD In the 1800s, orator Tom Fitch called Santa Monica “the Zenith City by the Sunset Sea.” The 21st-century version of Santa Monica fulfills its early promise with a bustling downtown and beach that attract millions of visitors each year. Pacific Coast Highway connects SaMo with elite coastal draws Malibu and Pacific Palisades. Venice and its main drag Abbot Kinney Boulevard attracts an eclectic crowd; upscale Brentwood is home to the Getty Center and numerous A-listers.
SANTA MONICA Third Street Promenade, three pedestrian-only
blocks on 3rd Street between Broadway and Wilshire Boulevard, teems with visitors browsing dozens of shops, including H&M and Anthropologie, and gawking at the myriad street artists. The Promenade is lined with all manner of eateries, as do the surrounding streets, with versatile dining experiences such as cozy pub Ye Olde King’s Head as well as Michelin-starred siblings Rustic Canyon for small plates and Cassia for Asian fusion. Anchoring the Promenade at Broadway is Santa Monica Place, an
open-air shopping center with Nordstrom, 80 boutiques, and a top-level Dining Deck. Steps away is the western terminus of the Metro Expo Line, which connects Santa Monica by light rail to downtown Los Angeles. Santa Monica Pier, built in 1909, is at the end of Colorado Avenue and features Pacific Park, a mini amusement park with food stands and rides. Take a ride on the Pacific Wheel, a solar-powered and LED-lit Ferris wheel.
MALIBU A few miles north of Santa Monica along Pacific Coast Highway is Malibu. Many of the city’s best destinations are visible from PCH, including renowned restaurants with ocean views, notably the casual Malibu Seafood and the upscale Nobu
Malibu. Celebrity-frequented Malibu Country Mart serves as the area’s town square; its Lucky’s steakhouse is new. Adjacent Malibu Village and Malibu Lumber Yard offer plenty more shops and restaurants.
PACIFIC PALISADES There’s more than what initially meets the eye in seemingly sleepy Pacific Palisades. Palisades Village—from the developer of The Grove and the Americana at Brand—has more than 40 boutiques. The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine on Sunset Boulevard is a 10-acre oasis with a koiand swan-filled lake. The area’s crown jewel is the Getty Villa, inspired by a Julius Caesar–era villa and dedicated to the study of the art and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.

VENICE In the early 1900s, Abbot Kinney developed Venice as an American version of the Italian city; the canals in his version are now lined with multimillion-dollar residences. His namesake Abbot Kinney Boulevard is Venice’s coolest street, with restaurants such as Gjelina and distinctive boutiques that make for an altogether entertaining stroll. For a municipality measuring less than 2 square miles, WeHo wields enormous influence over the L.A. lifestyle. SUNSET STRIP After dark, the iconic strip of Sunset Boulevard between Doheny Drive

through the city, are filled with restaurants such as the new Theía and design showrooms and boutiques from some of the hottest up-and-coming clothing and accessories designers. The two streets bracket the landmark eight-level Beverly Center. Bloomingdale’s, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton boutiques, and restaurants including refined seafood destination Angler, are among more than 160 draws.

In the heart of Hollywood, check out classic theaters and eclectic museums; see the stars embedded on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; or tour the site of the Academy Awards show. For a different kind of starry scene, head to Griffith Park for stargazing at the Griffith Observatory or the thousands of acres used for horseback riding and hiking.
HOLLYWOOD + HIGHLAND The entertainment and shopping complex of
Ovation Hollywood was a catalyst for the rebirth of Hollywood Boulevard. Its Dolby Theatre is the current home of the Academy Awards show, and its central Babylon Court frames views of the iconic Hollywood sign. Erected in 1923 to advertise a housing development, the sign’s 45-foot-high letters originally read “Hollywoodland.” Other draws include the Japan House gallery, the new Anvio VR virtual reality experience, and dining spots such as Cho Oishi for sushi and shabu-shabu. Next door to Hollywood & Highland is the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman’s
SHOWTIME Just opposite Hollywood & Highland is the ornate, lavishly illuminated El Capitan Theatre. Restored by Disney, it offers special presentations of the studio’s releases. The 1922 Egyptian Theatre screens eclectic artsy and classic fare. The landmark Pantages Theatre stages megahit musicals such as Hamilton. The Hollywood Bowl is the largest, and best, outdoor amphitheater in the U.S. The Los Angeles Philharmonic takes up residence in the summer; picnicking there under the stars is among
the city’s most memorable experiences.
WALK OF FAME The sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard (La Brea Avenue to Gower Street) and three blocks of Vine Street (Yucca Street to Sunset Boulevard) are inlaid with the legendary brass-and-terrazzo stars honoring celebrities from the entertainment industry. More than 2,400 stars are enshrined beneath visitors’ feet. Marilyn Monroe’s star is steps from Hollywood & Highland. John Lennon’s is in front of the Capitol Records Building, an architectural landmark designed to resemble a stack of records.

GRIFFITH PARK Among the largest urban parks in America, Griffith Park is an ideal place to hike, take a train ride, or golf. The Charlie Turner Trailhead begins at Griffith Observatory, one of the world’s great planetariums and a frequent film location. The hike up Mount Hollywood (3 miles round trip) provides spectacular views of L.A. skyscrapers and the Hollywood sign; the Greek Theatre is a legendary outdoor music venue. Also here: the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens and the Autry Museum of the American West, founded by the late singingcowboy Gene Autry.

Downtown CULTURE AND COOL: THE MUSIC CENTER, THE ARTS DISTRICT, L.A. LIVE, AND DYNAMIC DINING Downtown Los Angeles has undergone an eye-popping renaissance. Historic art deco structures share the streetscape with glass-clad towers, and celebrities have snapped up lofts in century-old buildings. The arts thrive along Grand Avenue as well as in the hip Arts District. L.A. Live is sports central; Chinatown and Olvera Street are fun cultural excursions; to the southwest, Exposition Park offers a trio of major museums.
GRAND AVENUE The heart of L.A.’s performing arts scene and the site of its most
dramatic architecture, Grand Avenue lives up to its name. Four venues on Bunker Hill make up the Music Center. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is home to LA Opera, the Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum host theatrical productions and architect Frank Gehry’s spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall is the home of the LA Philharmonic. Opposite is the 12-acre Grand Park.
BUNKER HILL Not far from the Ahmanson Theatre is the postmodern Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. A short walk south on Grand
is The Broad museum, a stunning edifice funded by and housing the contemporary art collection of philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. Angels Flight is a vintage funicular that climbs to California Plaza from Hill Street. The Bunker Hill Steps rise five stories at the U.S. Bank Tower. Across the street is the art deco-style Central Library.
OLVERA STREET The city’s origins date back to 1781 and the building of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, a historic monument that comprises 27 buildings along the festive pedestrian concourse Olvera Street. The city’s oldest building, Avila Adobe is here, along with Mexican restaurants, mariachi bands, and merchants selling arts, crafts, and food. Across the street is
Union Station, the largest railroad passenger terminal in the western United States; a few blocks away is L.A.’s oldest restaurant, built in 1908, Philippe the Original.
CHINATOWN Chinatown is the destination for dim sum—and dining at foodie meccas such as Howlin’ Ray’s for Nashville hot chicken—or browsing for clothing and home goods. Cultural highlights include the ornate Thien Hau Temple. Dodger Stadium is a short drive away, as is San Antonio Winery, which offers tours and tastings.
