_________ Align Your Parenting Decisions with Your True North Values James Burke was the CEO of Johnson & Johnson in the 1980s during Tylenol’s biggest crisis. When contaminated Tylenol made it on to the shelves of stores in Chicago, Burke insisted on pulling his product from every shelf in America to ensure the safety of the public. This led to high praise and increased levels of trust for Johnson & Johnson because the leader did the right thing, in spite of the huge expense. For Burke the decision came naturally because of his moral compass. We each have a built-in "compass" that offers direction for decision-making. Just as a mechanical compass shows magnetic north, your internal compass shows you True North values. These values should be considered whenever you lead family choices. There are five crucial parenting choices observed by your children everyday. Are your choices in alignment with your True North values?

T

he mood you choose to display when you arise each

morning to meet and greet your children is the first observable behavior noticed. Parents often underestimate the significance of these moments, but children tend to take a "reading" from a parent’s mood and internalize it. It’s quite natural for children to make assumptions about the family’s health and future based on the climate created by the mood of the parents. The mood of a parent ripples throughout the family like electricity. Your demeanor when reacting to family challenges is another indication of your commitment to True North. A calm tone in your voice says, "I’m confident we can handle this situation," whereas panic in your voice says, "I’m threatened by this and you should be, too." When a crisis or challenge hits your family, all eyes will look to you for a reaction. When family life is under attack, be sure to reflect a calm resolve that says, "I believe in you and our ability to solve this issue." Your choice in how you initiate change within the family is critical to the success of that change. While change is inevitable, the choices you make regarding how and when will say volumes about your True North. Your style of delivery about any change telegraphs the level of empathy you have for your children who must adjust quickly to the change. Share your understanding of the discomfort change creates.

How you choose to react to appropriate behaviors and inappropriate behaviors indicates your True North values. Are you able to separate the doer from the deed? When behavior does not meet agreed upon standards, is compassionate correction readily available, or only punishment? When it comes to praise, children watch for consistency. Do you praise effort or only results? Your approach will appear fair if you’ve provided a clear definition of what excellent behavior looks like. Nothing speaks louder to children than how their parents treat coaches. How you react to your coach shows everyone how it should be done. Your values in terms of respect, self-control, responses to winning and losing are obvious to your children as they watch you react to both the good coaches and the struggling coaches. Parents with high credibility are the ones who have strong convictions about what they value. They are admired because their beliefs are very clear, and their actions are consistent with those beliefs. Demonstrate to your children that you not only know your True North, but you intend to honor it – even when it’s not the easiest thing to do.

THE FORWARD PASS

M

oving a football purposely around a

football pitch against active opposition is not easy, it requires various skills brought together at the same time to accomplish successfully. Passing is the linkage of the game, whether it is performed with any part of the body (hands included if by goalkeepers). Teams’ who have players able to use their individualism in conjunction with an ability to combine with team-mates when necessary, have ‘gold dust’ at their disposal ….. Barcelona are a great example! As individualism has faded from our game, the importance of passing and receiving the ball has increased. The unpredictable ‘tanner ball player’ of the past has been forsaken for a safer option…. the ‘negative passer’.

Messi undoubtedly one of the greatest passer

Passing can be made unpredictable just as dribbling is, but in today’s football obvious, simplistic passing tends to be the rule. Passes backwards and sideways are made too frequently in all areas of the field when better passing options forward are available.

However, when forward passes over varying distances into more pressurized situations are made they tend to break down un-necessarily so often in games. Too often the use of the forward pass into mid-field is dispensed with as longer passes to front players is preferred. Our front players have an annoying tendency to prefer making runs in beyond opposing defenses rather than have a pass to their feet and in the vast majority of cases ball possession is lost; the impatience in our game supersedes preparatory playing aspects! The most regular cause for forward passes to go astray is usually due to too much speed given to the pass forcing receivers to make difficult controls to retain possession whilst under pressure from opponents. The percentage of slower passes forward into both mid-field and front positions should be much higher than we see at present. The combination of incorrect passing speed and over-stretched distances between passer and receiver allows marking defenders the opportunity to make successful interceptions and challenges for the ball.

Kaka one of best ball passer with transitional attack

SoccerDroid eMagazine - January 2013

22

Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez great passer of the ball

The art of receiving is also compromised when ball speed and distance are disregarded. Being able to receive the ball in a half-turned, ‘screening’ position is virtually impossible when ball speed and travel length is incorrect. Ball retention from forward passes is vital if successful attacking play is to be achieved. A carefully directed forward pass provides a receiver with a much better chance to retain the ball for him/herself as well as offering more opportunity for further team linkage to develop and prosper as play moves towards the opposing goal. Barcelona, have developed a passing game that focuses on slower passing speeds over shorter distances in the majority of cases. Their use of the forward pass is often delivered to simply draw opponents away from positions through which other passes can then be sent or into which colleagues can run. Playing in this way makes receiving

The faster forward pass that Barcelona sometimes delivers to exploit an attacking opportunity is not always successful even though these players have extremely high skill levels ………our teams’ with less skill and tactically awareness ‘hit’ fast passes too frequently over long distances and expect to play successful football……… it hasn’t worked in the past for us, it doesn’t work now and success playing this way just isn’t going to happen in the future! We must educate our coaches, and subsequently the players they work with, to embrace a more controlled passing gamestyle in which forward passes are not sent ‘rocket-like’ to distant targets, but are delivered to receiving players in all parts of the field with greater care and suitability. Individual and team performances should not be a matter of luck on the day.

Leon Britton rated as Europe top passer of the ball.

We must develop a playing attitude and a game-style that gives all players a better chance to display their playing skills and not just their physical and athletic qualities whilst our teams’ must make combination play a dominant feature of our game. Forward passes must ‘stick’ more often. Like forward running with the ball, the forward pass must become a possession conscious ‘penetrative thrust’ in our game and not the ‘give-away’ pass it has become. By John Cartwright

T

he story begins in February 1900 with Franz John, a

Berliner, and the 18 names on the club's corporate charter, the first of many Bayern players to come. The team's rise began in 1907, when the Bayern Reds moved to their new home, the Bayern Ground on Munich's Leopoldstrasse. Local opposition team, FC Wacker, found out which way things were heading with an 8-1 defeat in the opening match. Bayern's first success was a top place in Munich football, an achievement spectators at the Bayern Ground watched in relative comfort from a proper stand. Their first real peak came in 1910, when the team became Eastern Region Champions. Bayern became a household name in Germany, but after Simetsreiter, Goldbrunner and Moll had boosted the 1936 Olympic team in Berlin, the football spirit died. The Second World War broke out and was to still the pulse of sport in Germany for many years. But it would be a while before a German team without Bayern players became a rare sight, even though the Reds won the 1957 DFB (German Football Federation) Cup. In a sell-out match in front of 42,000 spectators at Augsburg's Rosenau Stadium, Bayern captain, Jobst led the team to a 1-0 victory over Fortuna D端sseldorf. But this was followed by a short period without victories. Managed from 1962 by construction magnate, Wilhelm Neudecker, Bayern faced disappointment in 1963, when they were not allowed to play in the newly established Bundesliga. But two years later FC Bayern stormed the so-called upper house of German football, coached by Tschik Cajkovski, who died in 1998. The club then entered an extraordinary period of development, which saw the emergence of Franz Beckenbauer and other great names in Bayern's history.

Beckenbauer had joined the Reds instead of the Blues (Munich 1860) after an argument, and Cajkovski now played him in the promotion play-offs. Behind him, in goal, stood a certain Sepp Maier. In front of him, on the opposite side of the pitch, a stocky young man called Gerd M端ller (whom Cajkovski would later affectionately dub 'the little fat m端ller') played the ball with consummate reliability.

1967 saw the Bavarians conquer their first European summit. Immediately after winning the Cup 4-0 over Hamburg SV, Beckenbauer's team achieved a kind of double. Franz 'Bull' Roth, the player who regularly scored the vital goals and earned the name 'Mr. European Cup', scored in the 109th minute to bring Bayern a 1-0 victory against Glasgow Rangers. The European Cup Winners' Cup belonged to the Bavarians. The dream had come true in Nuremberg. SoccerDroid eMagazine - January 2013

25

1977 was a year of change and a year without titles. Franz Beckenbauer said a temporary farewell to the club and headed for Cosmos New York and the US League. A year later, Gerd M체ller would follow him across the Atlantic to Fort Lauderdale. In 1979, at just 27 years old, Uli Hoeness became manager, replacing Beckenbauer advisor, Robert Schwan. Pal Cernai succeeded Guyla Lorant as coach, and club president, Neudecker, left when the team rejected former Lion, Max Merkel, as coach. The new boss of Bayern was Willi O. Hoffman. But better times lay ahead. In 1980, Paul Breitner and the young Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the pair dubbed 'FC Breitnigge', led Bayern to its first championship title for six years. In 1981 the trophy returned to Munich again, and in both years HSV, Stuttgart and Lautern took second, third and fourth places. 1982 witnessed the legendary cup victory over Nuremberg, which Bayern won 4-2 after trailing 0-2. Dieter Hoeness, his head bleeding and bandaged, played on to the end of the match and contributed one of the goals. But in the same year there was defeat in the Champions' Cup, where Bayern lost 1-0 to Aston Villa. And there was defeat for Germany in the World Cup final against Italy, though Breitner entered the history books as the only German to have scored a goal in two World Cup Finals. Still, Bayern's achievements did not go unrecognized.

Eleven times between 1965 and 1981, Bayern produced Germany's footballer of the year: Beckenbauer (4), Maier (3), Muller (2), Rummenigge and Breitner. In 1988,Jupp Heynckes arrived to take on the task of building a new team, following the departures of Matth채us, Brehme, Eder, Hughes, Michael Rummenigge and Pfaff. But though Heynckes brought home the 1989 and 1990 Champions' titles, the European Cup continued to elude the Munich club. Nevertheless, when Germany became world champions again in 1990, the team included six Bayern players: Augenthaler, Reuter, Thon, Kohler, Pfl체gler and Aumann.

Franz Beckenbauer

Karl Karl--Heinz Rummenigge

Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who had both offered their help if needed, now becamevice presidents of Bayern Munich. In the 93/94 season, the 'Kaiser' stepped in for the luckless Ribbeck and Bayern took the championship. But Rehhagel also had to go in the second half of the season, even though Bayern reached the final of the UEFA Cup with two unforgettable semi-final games against Barcelona. After a 2-2 draw at Munich's Olympic Stadium, it looked as if it was over. But the return match at Barcelona's Estadio Camp Nou turned into a victory parade. Babbel and Witeczek scored the goals in that 2-1 victory on 16th April 1996, which the fans still talk about to this day. Franz Beckenbauer, President of Bayern Munich since 1994, was amongst those standing on the sidelines during the final matches. That year, the 2-0 and 3-1 against Orondins Bordeaux gave Bayern its first title win in this competition, but it was Dortmund who became national champions. Trapattoni returned to the club. Two more years as Bayern coach brought two further titles: Champions in 1997, Cup winners in 1998. When the Maestro left, a whole city bowed its heads in respect. He had sealed his place in the hearts of the fans with a passionate speech that attained cult status for phrases like 'The bottle's empty. We're all smashed'. Ottmar Hitzfeld succeeded Trap and achieved a near perfect first year with a 15th Championship victory, and appearances in the DFB Cup final and Champions League final. But that 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in Barcelona, when European Cup victory disappeared in a matter of a few seconds, was a bitter pill to swallow. Can Hitzfeld, Effenberg and the rest of the team recapture what was lost last year in the coming season, which includes FC Bayern's 100th birthday on 27th February? The timing would be perfect. Bayern opened the new millennium in spectacular fashion, claiming the Champions League, the domestic championship, the World Club Cup and the German Cup in quick succession. Bayern ended the old millennium on a low note with the devastating defeat to Manchester United in the 1999 Champions League final, but the team built around Oliver Kahn, Stefan Effenberg and Giovane Elber swiftly set about making amends in the new century. There was even better to come in 2000-2001. The omens were not good after an early German Cup exit to unfancied Magdeburg, but after 34 Bundesliga matches, Bayern again finished top of the standings. And again the glory was earned in dramatic fashion as Patrik Andersson blasted a stoppage-time equalizer in Hamburg with almost the last kick of the last match, snatching the title from rivals Schalke 04, whose game had already finished.

2001-2 was always likely to be a let-down, although Bayern still ended the campaign with a trophy. Dortmund and Leverkusen finished above the Reds in the league and Schalke registered a 2-0 success over Munich in the German Cup semifinal, but a Sammy Kuffour goal sealed a 1-0 victory against Boca Juniors in November 2001 and the Reds brought home the World Club Cup for the second time in their history. The Champions League campaign ran until the quarter-finals, where Real put an end to Bavarian hopes. Germany's most successful club bounced back in the Bundesliga the following year, winning the 2002-3 title with a massive 16 point advantage over surprise runners-up Stuttgart after totally dominating the domestic season. The Reds kept their focus for the German Cup final and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Kaiserslautern including a Michael Ballack brace. The playmaker successfully stepped into Stefan Effenberg's shoes and claimed the Player of the Year accolade as Bayern sealed their fourth double.

Brimming with confidence after the knife-edge finale, the Reds travelled to Milan on 23 May 2001 for the Champions League final against Valencia. Bayern had been on a European revenge mission all season, knocking out Manchester United in the quarter-finals and then seeing off Madrid with a 1-0 away win and a 2-1 success at home. Olli Kahn was the hero of that unforgettable night in Milan, saving three penalties in the shoot-out after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time to seal Munich's fourth European Champions Cup title, a quarter of a century after a the previous success

FC Bayern Munich 2012 UEFA Cup Final

Allianz Arena, Arena, home field for FC Bayern Munich The summer of 2004 saw a change in the managerial hot seat at Bayern. Felix Magath replaced the eminently successful Ottmar Hitzfeld, and immediately picked up where his predecessor had left off. Magath, a keen proponent of the values of discipline, organization and fitness - he often had his players work out with medicine balls and lead-weighted jackets – set an historic new record in the course of the next two years, leading FCB to the domestic cup and league double in both 2004-5 and 20056. Even mighty Munich had not previously achieved backto-back double triumphs. The club’s new home ground certainly played a part in that success. May 2005 saw the curtain finally fall at the Olympic Stadium. After 33 extremely successful seasons, Bayern moved to the Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning to the north of the city. The Arena is a football-only stadium and boasts a capacity of 69,000. Within a very short space of time, fans and players alike enthusiastically settled to their new home. Christmas came slightly early at the Bridge as the Blues turned on the style, especially in the second half of this one-sided encounter Lampard, making the 500th Premier League start of his career, had the chance to test Brad Guzan very early on after Torres had been illegally impeded when the ball was played forward for the first time.

Clint and Ade put Leon Britton under pressure. Andre Villas-Boas pinpointed the pressing game as key to Sunday's 1-0 victory against Swansea at the Lane. The team's intent to pressurize Swansea in possession was clear from the first whistle and worked a treat. The visitors were afforded no time on the ball and therefore couldn't play their usual passing game. The pressure also led to chances after winning the ball high up the pitch, especially in the first half, but we had to wait until the 75th minute for Jan Vertonghen to finally break the Swans' defensive resistance with the winner. U.S. Soccer Unveils Name of New Women’s Soccer League. “ The League Will Begin Play in the Spring of 2013”

The new eight-team women’s soccer league will be called the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The league, which will be administered by U.S. Soccer, will begin in the spring of 2013. The new league logo is appropriately red, white and blue and features the silhouette of a female soccer player about to strike a shot. Soccer Jersey To soccer legend Diego Maradona of Argentina, "giving everything for the shirt" is a player's motto. In other words, the soccer jersey is everything a team stands for.

Numbers Game - What do the Numbers Mean?

In soccer's earliest days you might have been just a number. And you were lucky to be among the top 11. But what did those numbers mean? Numbers were placed on official soccer jerseys so media, fans, and players themselves could distinguish one from another. Players were initially numbered based on starting formation. Top players were numbered 1-11 beginning with the goalkeeper. It worked kind of like baseball's batter order, one through nine. If you wore the number 12 or over, most likely you were a soccer substitute. Over time, the formation varied from one country to another. With the influx of television and media making soccer more visible and popular, numbers became associated with certain players, which increased marketing of numbered soccer team jerseys. The first 11 players were definitely in the lineup. In more recent decades importance assigned to a number is no longer limited to the first 11 players. But one number stands alone, and that is the "One" belonging only to the goalkeeper.

The Changing Jersey Since the beginning, and despite the absence of any mention of uniform in the 11 points of the Cambridge Rules established in 1848, the soccer uniform has evolved. By and large, the soccer uniform is pretty basic. It involves only a short-sleeved jersey, soccer shorts, socks, shoes, and shin guards. In its simple design, the soccer uniform keeps players cool during the warm seasons, when the game is most often played. During most of the Victorian age (1837 - 1901) players had no uniforms, just white shirts and pants with colorful caps or scarves to tell teams apart. And often players wore long trousers. And so it was until about 1870 when the English FA Cup received so much media attention that the public demanded that teams wear clothing that distinguished them from one another. Team colors were often chosen according to the school or club they represented, such as the white jersey adorning the Shrewbury School's blue Maltese Cross. Often teams not of the rich society opted for a less expensive look. SoccerDroid eMagazine - January 2013

They simply wore white. Wealthy teams could afford to sport its club's colors, but were required to provide alternate colors just in case two teams showed up to a game with the same color. And players were expected to foot the bill until soccer became professional, in which case the team paid for it. Soccer shirts welcomed the twentieth century with a traditional look that created a giant fashion trend around the world. Players sported a tailored jersey made from durable, natural fibers in a variety of collar designs. Most popular among them were laced crew necks and wide vertical stripes. Horizontal stripes were common also. In the 1930s, collared rugby-style shirts replaced crew necks, most visibly the 1933 Arsenal red shirt with white sleeves, and a wide, white collar. Within a few years' time numbered shirts were introduced in Britain, and after the war the trend began to spread to other parts of the world. The jersey changed little over the coming decades. It wasn't until World War II that strides were made in the evolution of the soccer uniform.

In the mid-1900s teams began wearing light, synthetic fabrics, creating a look that became the mother of the modern soccer jersey. And so we saw the "continental style" jersey featuring lighter, short-sleeved v-neck designs, although some parts of Europe were already sporting sleek, lightweight looks. Meanwhile, Brazil had a look all its own a yellow shirt with green collar and cuffs, the brain child of young newspaper illustrator whose handiwork won a national design contest.

The soccer uniform entered the revolutionary 1960s having departed from the long, baggy shorts and button-down shirts of the prior decade, to V-necks and rounded collars. The following 20 years found jerseys becoming more commercial, as teams sought to sell replicas of signature jerseys of notable players complete with team logos, and which were made with lighter, cooler fabrics. In keeping with the sleek 60s look, shirts came in bold solid colors, making soccer jerseys more visible in under the stadium lights. The next decade found designers including their logos on the sleeves and fronts of European and English soccer jerseys. The 1970s marked a time that returned to traditional colors with circular necks, and striped looks. By mid-1980s the media began to accept the idea that jerseys worn by professional soccer players should patronize various brands. This kicked off an era of soccer jersey marketing like never seen before. And soccer jerseys were continuing to be made of lighterweight, durable polyester. The 1990s marked a time of increasing commercialism for the soccer shirt, with replica shirts baring the logos of professional teams being widely marketed. No longer made of cotton, technology continues to produce jerseys that are lighter and more breathable than ever, with fabrics made from cotton blends of nylon and polyester. From the 1800s to the modern age of soccer, jerseys evolved with the times, and ever-changing demands of the player, recreational and professional alike.

Core Exercises to strengthening the body pillar In the U.S., about 75% of yoga participants are women, as are 90% of Pilates participants -- but men are catching on as "core strength" is the new rage in fitness. It’s had been reported, that men tend to prefer exercises and activities like bench press, that can be directly measured by reps and weight, however, the tide may be turning as pro-athletes are looking to "core strength" to prevent injury. 1. Glute Bridge: Lie face up on the ground with your arms to the side, knees bent and heels flat on the ground. Lift hips until knees, hips and shoulders are in a straight line. Hold for two-to-three seconds. Repeat several times.

2. Lateral Pillar Bridge:

Lie on your side with your forearm on the ground under your shoulder. Push your hip off the ground . Create a straight line from your ankles to your shoulder. Hold this position for 15-to 30 seconds. Repeat several times. SoccerDroid eMagazine - January 2013

3. Plank with Arm Lift: Start in a push-up position with your feet and shoulders apart. Without moving your torso, lift your right arm up and slightly to the right. Hold for one to two seconds. Then switch to the right arm and do the same. Repeat several times.

Core-strengthening exercises seek to bolster all the muscles of the torso from top to bottom and front to back, creating a balance that enables athletes to stand tall, limbs in alignment down to their feet and hands. The particular exercises that strengthen core muscles involve stretching and balance routines that also enhance flexibility....Many sports-medicine specialists expect corestrength exercises to become the third leg of public-health recommendations in regard to workouts. Just as cardiovascular exercise is promoted for heart health and resistance training for strong bones, experts expect corestrengthening movements to gain public-health favor for avoiding muscularskeletal pain and injury, particularly of the neck, back and hips. "In the sports and fitness worlds, the benefits of core strength exercise are accepted facts," says Bill Sonnemaker, a personal trainer and spokesman for IDEA Health & Fitness Association, an educational association for fitness professionals.
