Lets Get the Cleverness… Back into Our Game

F

or many years we at Premier Skills have been

advocating the crucial need for greater individuality from our players and just as importantly greater tactical individual cleverness in all areas of the field. The questions I challenge myself to answer when watching players developed in the English system are: Do our full backs always have to run, pass and support in that 8 meter wide tight channel that runs from the back third to the front third? Can they occasionally run inside with and without the ball creating an overload in midfield whilst at the same time pulling wide opponents in field to create more room for wide attackers? Can’t we challenge our centre backs to run Kenny Dalglish through the “front striker defense force” to create problems for opposing midfield markers by outnumbering them. Can we get our back players into midfield to create softer passing options in to front players by lessening the distance? or even opportunities for the back players to carry on running in to the top third? Is it possible that both full backs and centre backs could show confidence and skill by working with both feet in order to screen and protect the ball when in the tight midfield pressure zone? Wouldn’t it be even greater if their vision gave them the awareness to play ahead of themselves’ and make timely changes of direction and turns to avoid running in to blind alleys?

Wouldn`t we all like to see in central midfield, players running laterally across opponents. Why can`t we have clever midfielder’s that use “moving screens” to perform take overs, wall passes and lateral give and go`s with “quick patience” in order to create linkage opportunities with front players? Do our midfielders have the judgment to change the tempo, turn out and start again or stay with the ball in order to maintain possession before upping the tempo again to with penetrative individualism or linkage? Why can’t we develop wide players who when in the top third can run and exploit space inside as well as outside defenders and critically be able to use both feet to protect the ball? I mean it’s not as if Pele, Maradona, Gazza and Messi haven’t shown the prototype!!!

Paul GASCOIGNE (GAZZA)

I further ask myself in the latest clutch of English International front men do we rarely see anyone who can “slyly” create that yard of space in those “half positions” in the top third that Bergkamp, Dalglish and to a lesser extent Sheringham made look so easy? Why is it our front players always seem to showing for the ball at “100 miles an hour” with a defender tight on their back? -‘ fight football’ at its most torrid. Compare with Cantona whose first touch would often pull the defender away from the space so he could then reverse pass in to the linking player in support…………genius! and so so clever. We rarely, if ever, see those qualities in our players and I see that we are falling further and further behind in the style, individualism and craft our players display in comparison with Spain, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Portugal and Brazil to name a few. We rarely, if ever, see those qualities in our players and I see that we are falling further and further behind in the style,

individualism and craft our players display in comparison with Spain, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Portugal and Brazil to name a few. In my opinion it’s not the players who are at fault because they are merely the products of the development system and coaching methodology they have been subjected to. Coaches at all levels especially grass roots need the commitment and coaching expertise to bring skill and tactical cleverness back in to the game. We need coaches with the insight to produce ‘naturally’ skilled great players and great teams. Those qualities I’ve mentioned can and should be carefully and cleverly introduced to our kids from the very start of their playing and coaching experience. Our aim must be to produce Charlton, Gazza, Maradona, Messi and Iniesta types by the’ bucket load’. Our aim should be to make our game cleverer and more skilfull than anywhere else. I’m sure those coaches who have attended our Practice Play courses will testify that our methodology encourages these clever qualities at all levels of the work. We are committed to producing clever innovative coaches who in turn will produce gifted skilful and clever players. Football’s a great game join us in our efforts to produce players who will amaze and excite us. I hope this article will strike a chord with us all and inspire us to adopt a new impetus and spread the word; Let’s coach the cleverness back in to our game! Messi and Iniesta

_________ How to Create Positive Change in Your Family A successful family life is really about change – personal change, growth and development. It’s a topic most people give lip service, nod in agreement about its necessity, but avoid whenever possible. We know there are areas in our parenting and home life where we need to make some changes. Changes in: Eating habits to make everyone healthier Communication skills so conversations are less defensive and more productive Schedules (lessons and practice sessions) for more balance to family life We see lots of areas where we want our children (or our spouses!) to change and we run into the same resistance that we face with our own fears or stubbornness. We seek the comfort of the status quo, even if it’s not working. It’s important for us to understand why people tend to resist change, even when we are convinced it is the right thing to do. People will embrace change only if one of the following is true. They Hurt Enough – People will not exercise the self-discipline of hard work until after they’ve suffered the embarrassment of being fired or not making a team. They Learn Enough – People will not lose weight until they learn from their doctor that their heart is at risk or they’re too slow to make the starting lineup. They Love or Want Enough – People will change their jam-packed daily routine to make room for a new sport or exercise because they absolutely love the activity itself. SoccerDroid eMagazine - March 2013

21

To help your family move forward requires someone who will champion the cause of change and lead the crusade for improvement in a credible way. However successful change in a family is based more on feeling the need for change rather than thinking the need for change. Emotions carry more weight than facts! When people feel the need for change, they are far more committed to it than when they think about the need for change. The trick is to give them an experience through which they feel the need for something new. This must include painting a picture (vision) of what the new outcome will look like. The more attractive the new vision, the more energy is created for moving toward it. One of the best examples of this takes place in the movie "Remember the Titans." In 1971, Coach Herman Boone was faced with the newly integrated football team of a high school in Alexandria, Virginia. To help his biracial team become one in spirit, Coach Boone took the boys on a run through the woods in the middle of the night until they arrived at the site of the battle of Gettysburg. As they stood overlooking the battlefield where over 50,000 men lost their lives "fighting a battle we’re still fighting today", Herman Boone warns, "If we don’t come together, we too will be destroyed." It was a powerful emotional moment during which the need for personal change became a strong feeling within each member of the team. As a result, new behaviors followed. Your challenge is two-fold. First, you must identify the specific change that would benefit your family. What’s holding up your family from becoming what it was meant to be? Secondly, what experience can you give your children that would be the equivalent of the run to Gettysburg from "Remember the Titans"? What could you show your children so they would feel the need for change, rather than argue the facts? Be the parent that creates meaningful change by reaching their hearts rather than lecturing their minds

Celtic FC “Old Firm”

from the since

1887

Celtic Football Club is a Scottish football club based in Glasgow, which plays in the Scottish Premier League. The club was established in 1887, and played its first game in 1888. Celtic have a long-standing rivalry with Rangers; the two Glasgow clubs are collectively known as the Old Firm. Celtic Football Club was formally constituted at a meeting in St. Mary's church hall in East Rose Street (now Forbes Street), Calton, Glasgow, by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid on 6 November 1887, with the purpose of alleviating poverty in the East End of Glasgow by raising money for the charity Walfrid had instituted, the Poor Children's Dinner Table. Walfrid's move to establish the club as a means of fund-raising was largely inspired by the example of Hibernian who were formed out of the immigrant Irish population a few years earlier in Edinburgh. Walfrid's own suggestion of the name 'Celtic' (pronounced Seltik), was intended to reflect the club's Irish and Scottish roots, and was adopted at the same meeting. The club has the official nickname, "The Bhoys". However, according to the Celtic press office, the newly established club was known to many as "the Brother Walfrid, founder of Celtic bold boys". A postcard from the early 20th century that pictured Football Club the team, and read "The Bould Bhoys", is the first known example of the unique spelling. The extra h imitates the spelling system of Gaelic, where the letter b is often accompanied by the letter y. On 28 May 1888, Celtic played their first official match against Rangers and won 5–2 in what was described as a "friendly encounter". Neil McCallum scored Celtic's first ever goal. The squad that played that day was largely composed of players signed from Hibernian. Celtic's first kit consisted of a white shirt with a green collar, black shorts, and emerald green socks. The original club crest was a simple green cross on a red oval background. A team photo from the early days of the club, In 1889 Celtic reached the final of the Scottish Cup, before the adoption of the nownow-famous this was their first season in the competition, but hooped jerseys

lost 2–1 in the final. Celtic again reached the final of the Scottish Cup in 1892, but this time were victorious after defeating Queen's Park 5–2 in the final. Several months later the club moved to its new ground, Celtic Park, and in the following season won the Scottish League Championship for the first ever time. In 1895, Celtic set the League record for the highest home score when they beat Dundee 11–0.

1967 was Celtic's annus mirabilis. The club won every competition they entered: the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Glasgow Cup, and the European Cup. Under the leadership of Stein, the club defeated Inter Milan 2–1 at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, on 25 May 1967. Celtic thus became the first British team, and the first from outside Spain, Portugal and Italy to win the competition.

The Celtic squad that went on to win the 1967 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Nicknamed; The Hoops, Hoops The Bhoys

In 1897, the club became a Private limited company and Willie Maley was appointed as the first 'secretary-manager'. Between 1905 and 1910, Celtic won the Scottish League Championship six times in a row. In both 1907 and 1908 Celtic also won the Scottish Cup, this was the first time a Scottish club had ever won the Double. During World War I, Celtic won the league four times in a row, including 62 matches unbeaten between November 1915 and April 1917. Ex-player and captain Jimmy McGrory took over in 1945. Under McGrory, Celtic defeated Arsenal, Manchester United and Hibernian to win the Coronation Cup, a one-off tournament held in May 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Elizabeth II.

They remain the only Scottish team to have reached the final. The players that day subsequently became known as the "Lisbon Lions". Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Lennox and Bobby Murdoch formed part of that famous team, andnow rank among the greatest ever Celtic players. The following year Celtic lost to Racing Club of Argentina in the Intercontinental Cup. Celtic reached the

European Cup Final again in 1970, but were beaten 2–1 by Feyenoord at the San Siro in Milan. On 19 October 1957, Celtic defeated Rangers a record 7–1 in the final of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park in Glasgow, retaining the trophy they had won for only the first time the previous year. The scoreline remains a record win in a British domestic cup final. Former Celtic captain Jock Stein succeeded McGrory in 1965. Stein guided Celtic to nine straight Scottish League wins from 1966 to 1974, establishing a world record which was not equalled until 1997. SoccerDroid eMagazine - March 2013 25

Celtic reached the European Cup Final again in 1970, but were beaten 2–1 by Feyenoord at the San Siro in Milan. Despite further domestic success in the 1980s, the Bank of Scotland informed Celtic that it was calling in the receivers on 3 March 1994 as a result of the club exceeding a £5 million overdraft. However, expatriate businessman Fergus McCann wrested control of the club, and ousted the family dynasties which had controlled Celtic since its foundation. According to media reports, McCann took over the club minutes before it was to be declared bankrupt. McCann reconstituted the club business as a public limited company – Celtic PLC – and oversaw the redevelopment of Celtic Park into a 60,832 all-seater stadium. In 1998, under Dutchman Wim Jansen Celtic won the title again and prevented Rangers from beating Celtic's 9-in-a-row record.

Martin O'Neill

Martin O'Neill, a former European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest, took charge of the club in June 2000. Under his leadership, Celtic won three SPL championships out of five and in his first season in charge, the club also won the domestic treble, making O'Neill only the second Celtic manager to do so after Jock Stein. In 2003, around 80,000 Celtic fans travelled to watch the club compete in the UEFA Cup Final in Seville. Celtic lost 3–2 to FC Porto after extra time, despite two goals from Henrik Larsson during normal time. The exemplary conduct of the thousands of travelling Celtic supporters received widespread praise from the people of Seville (not one supporter was arrested) and the fans were awarded prestigious Fair Play Awards from both FIFA and UEFA "for their extraordinarily loyal and sporting behaviour

Arthur Antunes Coimbra, better known as Zico, is a Brazilian coach and former footballer. Often called,

"White Pelé Pelé" " Born March 3rd 1953 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He is commonly considered one of the most skilled finishers and one of the best passers ever and possibly the world's best player of the late 70's and early 80's. He is also considered as one of history's greatest playmakers and free kick specialists, able to bend the ball in all directions with pace. The gifted midfielder was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004. Also according to Pelé, Pelé, generally considered the best footballer ever, "throughout the years, the one player that came closest to me was Zico Zico“. “. Zico scored 52 goals in 72 international matches for Brazil, and represented them in the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups. They did not win any of those tournaments, even though the 1982 squad is considered one of the greatest Brazilian national squads ever. Zico is often considered one of the best players in football history not to have been on a World Cup winning squad. He was chosen 1981 and 1983 Player of the Year. Zico has coached the Japanese national team, appearing in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and winning the Asian Cup 2004, and Fenerbahçe, Fenerbahçe, who were a quarter--finalist in 2007 quarter 2007––08 in the Champions League under his command. He was announced as the head coach of CSKA Moscow in January 2009. On 16 September 2009, Zico was signed by Greek side Olympiacos for a twotwo-year contract after the club's previous coach, Temuri Ketsbaia Ketsbaia,, was sacked. He was fired four months later, on 19 January 2010. 2010

On 30 May 2010, Zico announced that he would become the new Soccer Executive/Director for Flamengo,, coming back to the team Flamengo where he won his most important honors after 25 years. One of his demands is that his salary won't be paid by the club. Instead, it will be paid by Flamengo's sponsors such as Olympikus and BMG. His contract is for four years. Zico came from a lowerlower-middle middle--class family, in the neighborhood of Quintino, Quintino, Rio de Janeiro. In common with many Brazilians, he spent much of his youth dreaming of playing professional football. In 1967, while still a teenager, he had a scheduled trial at América, América, where his brothers Antunes and Edu were playing at the time. But he caught the attention of the radio reporter and friend, Celso Garcia, who asked Zico's father to take him to a trial at Flamengo instead. Being a fan of Flamengo, Flamengo, Zico had his father's approval, beginning his path towards becoming one of the most admired players in the history of the sport. Physically Zico was not strong, and his history of determination and discipline began with a hard muscle and body development program conducted by the Physical Education teacher José Roberto Francalacci. Francalacci. A combination of hard work and also a special diet sponsored by his team enabled him to develop a strong body and become an athlete. This later proved to be essential for his success.

In 1971, he had some appearances in the professional team but only one year later, after 116 matches and 81 goals in the youth team, Zico was promoted to Flamengo's professional squad. While at Flamengo, Zico was a key player during the most glorious period of the team's history. Along with many other titles, in his first period at Flamengo he led the team to victory in the 1981 Copa Libertadores, the 1981 Intercontinental Cup, and four national titles (1980/82/83/87)Zico made goals in all imaginable ways, was also a great assister and team organizer, and was known for his excellent vision of the field. He was a two-footed player and an expert at free kicks.

In the 1978 World Cup against Sweden, Zico headed a corner kick into the goal in the final minute of the match, apparently breaking a 1–1 tie. However, in a call that became infamous, the Welsh referee Clive Thomas disallowed the goal, saying that he had blown the whistle to end the match while the ball was still in the air. 1982 World Cup would see Zico as part of a fantastic squad, side by side with Falcão, Sócrates, Cerezo and Júnior. In spite of his 4 goals and great skills by that squad, the team was defeated by Paolo Rossi and Italy in the second round.

After receiving offers from AS Roma and AC Milan, it seemed right to move to Italy, and in a multi-million dollar transaction he was hired to play for Udinese Calcio. Though leaving Flamengo fans in sadness, he caused a commotion in Udine by making fans to dream about better days for the city's club. In the 1983–84 Serie A, his first in Italy, his partnership with Franco Causio took Udinese to a higher level, gaining respect from giants Juventus and Roma. His personal top scorer dispute against

Juventus's Michel Platini was exciting – Zico scored 19 goals, one fewer than top scorer Platini, having played 6 fewer matches than the French footballer. His following season would be punctuated by injuries, suspensions due to openly attacking referees, and a great match against Napoli's Diego Maradona – his last one as a bianconero. Ultimately Udinese failed to win any relevant competition and Zico returned to Brazil and Flamengo, sponsored by a group of companies SoccerDroid eMagazine - March 2013 40

On his return, he suffered a knee injury after a violent tackle from Bangu's defender Marcio Nunes,, which interrupted his career for several Nunes months. He played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup while still injured, and missed a penalty during regular time in the quarterquarter-final match against France. The match ended in a tie which led to a shootout. Zico then scored his goal but after penalties missed by Sócrates and Júlio César, Brazil were knocked out. Recovered from injuries, things improved for Zico in 1987 when he led Flamengo to Módulo Verde title. In December 1989 Zico made his last official appearance for Flamengo in a Brazilian National Championship match against rivals Fluminense Fluminense.. Zico made the first goal and Flamengo won the match 55-0. Two months later, he would play his last match ever as a Flamengo player facing a World Cup Masters team composed of names like Eric Gerets Gerets,, Claudio Gentile, Franco Causio Causio,, Alberto Tarantini, Tarantini, Jorge Valdano Valdano,, Mario Kempes Kempes,, Paul Breitner Breitner,, KarlKarlHeinz Rummenigge and Falcão Falcão.. With 731 matches for Flamengo Flamengo,, Zico is the player with the 2nd most appearances for the club. His 508 goals make him the club's top scorer ever. The achievements of the greatest idol in Flamengo's history inspired the Brazilian singer Jorge Benjor to write a song in his honour – Camisa 10 da Gávea – helping create the mystique of the club's number 10. Zico also represented Brazil in the World Cup of Masters, scoring in the final of the 1990 and 1991 editions.

In 1991, Zico interrupted his political assignment when he accepted an offer to join the Sumitomo Metal Industries Soccer Club in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, to help the club secure a place in Japan's first fully professional soccer league that was set to officially launch in 1993 – J. League. Zico played for Sumitomo in 1992, the last season before the old Japan Soccer League was disbanded, and finished as the league's top scorer. When the new league launched, the small town club, renamed Kashima Antlers, was not expected to compete with richer, more glamorous clubs like Yokohama Marinos and Verdy Kawasaki. Zico Zico,, however, helped the Antlers to win the J.League Suntory Series and a runnersrunners-up finish in its inaugural season, leading the club to cement its place among the league's elite. His discipline, talent and professionalism meshed very well with Japanese culture, and his influence earned him the nickname, "God of Soccer” from Japanese soccer fans. Zico retired from professional football during the 1994 season but received an invitation to play Beach Soccer. He returned to Kashima to become the Antlers' technical adviser in 1995, splitting his time between Japan and Brazil – where he still managed to find time to play Beach Soccer. One year later, in 1996, he founded CFZ (Zico (Zico Football Centre) in Rio de Janeiro. Zico founded another club, named CFZ de Brasília, in 1999. By this time, he was a local legend in Japan for having built a contender from almost nothing and putting the city of Kashima on the map. A statue in his honor stands outside Kashima Soccer Stadium.

After Brazil's first presidential election in many years, the new president Fernando Collor de Mello appointed Zico as his Minister of Sports. Zico stayed at this political assignment for about a year and his most important contribution was a piece of legislation dealing with the business side of sport teams. Over 160 million Thunderers have been manufactured by Hudson & Co., which is still based in Birmingham, England. Apart from football, Hudson whistles have also been used by crewmen on the Titanic, by British 'bobbies' (policemen) and by reggae musicians. Today the Fox 40 series of whistles are very popular with many referees because of their "pea-less" design. 1860/70s: A toolmaker in England, called Joseph Hudson, converted his humble washroom at St. Marks Square in Birmingham, which he rented J Hudson & Co made 1890's escargotfor 1s. 6d. As Bakelite started to develop as a moulding material, the first early plastic whistles were made. 1920: An improved 'Acme Thunderer' dates from around 1920. It was designed to be smaller, shriller and with its tapered mouthpiece, and was more comfortable for referees. Whistle 'Model No. 60.5, a small whistle with a tapered mouthpiece produces a high pitch - and could have been the type of whistle used in the first Wembley Cup Final held on 28 April 1923 between Bolton Wanderers (2) v West Ham United (0) and was designed for use in big 2004: There are many whistle manufacturers, crowds. The Tornado 635 is extremely powerful, in pitch and loudness. Its unique unconventional design is for those who want something that really stands out from the crowd. Three different and distinctive sounds; perfect for "three on three" or any situation where games are played in close proximity. The Thunderer 560 is a smaller whistle, with a high pitch. The 'Pro-Soccer' whistle, first used in 1930, had a special mouthpiece and a barrel for even greater power and a higher pitch for use in a noisy stadium. 1988: The.' first made by Hudson was used at World Cups, UEFA Champion League matches and at the F.A. The Tornado 2000, was probably the ultimate in power whistles.

The popular Fox 40's range also offers some excellent whistles. The FOX Classic - is their loudest, shrillest penetrating power whistle. Its patent pea-less design is ideal for outdoor safety as it is virtually indestructible, has no moving parts to jam or freeze and can be heard up to a mile away. Carbohydrates for training Carbohydrate provides an important, but relatively short-lived, supply of fuel for exercise, and the storage depots, in the form of glycogen, must be refilled each day from carbohydrate foods in the diet. Everyday eating and drinking plans for athletes need to provide enough carbohydrate to fuel their training programmes and to optimize the recovery of muscle glycogen stores between workouts. General targets can be provided for carbohydrate needs, based on the each individual’s size and the demands of their training programme

Strategies for choosing carbohydrate foods and drinks and for optimising glycogen recovery When the gap between training sessions is less than approximately 8 hours (as when training twice daily), carbohydrate intake should start as soon as practicable after the first session to maximize the effective recovery time. There may be some advantages in meeting carbohydrate targets through a series of snacks during the early recovery phase. Solid and liquid forms of carbohydrate are both suitable for recovery eating, but some choices may be more practical than others because of appetite, convenience or personal preferences.

During longer recovery periods (24 hours), the pattern and timing of carbohydrate-rich meals and snacks do not appear to be critical, and can be organized according to what is practical and comfortable for each athlete. Given the amount of carbohydrate that may need to be consumed, high carbohydrates foods will need to be spread out over the full 24 hours. It is valuable to choose nutrient-rich carbohydrates and to add other foods to recovery meals and snacks to provide a of protein and other nutrients. These nutrients may assist in other recovery processes, and in the case of protein, may promote additional glycogen recovery when carbohydrate intake is below fuel intake targets. Adequate energy intake is also important for optimal glycogen recovery; the restrained eating practices of some athlete, particularly females, make it difficult to meet carbohydrate intake targets and to optimize glycogen storage from this intake. (see Table below). Prepared: IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Commission By: Professor Louise Burke, Australia Professor Ron Maughan, UK
