Impatience In Our Game! The impatience that is so prevalent in football in this country is due to low playing ability; impatience is a ‘camouflage’ for poor skills and limited tactical knowledge; resulting in FEAR in every corner of the game! Impatience radiates through all sections of football in this country. From the top down to junior levels, the sad demands for simplistic performances that avoid difficult decisions and actions has created ‘robotic’ reactions and stifled performances and this mediocrity is then perceived as satisfactory by most associated with the game here.
Miguel Pérez Cuesta, commonly known as Michu of Swansea FC
Skill acquisition creates confidence and confidence is the ‘armour’ that protects the playing of the game from being reduced to simplistic monotony. Individual skill, gradually nurtured and embellished to gel with team-play, is the ‘holy grail’ for all coaches, junior to senior, to seek and develop.
A football team should consist of skilful individuals in every position—even goalkeepers. Fear of mistakes is lessened when each player is comfortable on the ball and has the ability to combine effectively with team-mates. Impatience when pressurized is not something that should contort the playing style of individual or team as it does here today; Barcelona are the present day example of individual flare and team style as opposed to the ‘huff and puff’ recognized as the English and the American soccer games. We have seen several attempts to improve the playing style here over the last few years, Arsenal – Wigan – and Swansea, have shown the ‘guts’ to make changes to the historical game-style ‘expected’ to be played here. Each have had their problems when trying to ‘re-educate’ Directors, Staff, Players, Media and Fans. The ‘upand-at-`em’ culture that persists throughout our game is incredibly difficult to overcome and the clubs’ who try to introduce more sophistication find the transition almost impossible. Winning is the key. Whilst results are positive all sections of the football public will accept a more subtle approach to the playing of the game. However, should results fall away, impatience returns with a venom and the fear from beyond the field of play is soon transferred onto it! SoccerDroid eMagazine - May 2013

The problem of lack of individual playing ability is the main concern with clubs’ trying to ‘fast-track’ from ‘direct play’ to a ‘keep-ball’ style. Lack of talent in the country has forced the game into what we mostly see now and attempting to ‘force’ a more sophisticated playing style onto ‘unprepared’ players is unlikely to succeed. Playing with more concern about possession is fine as long as the players are able to produce the skills – especially when opponents pressurize those questionable and unreliable skills!! Gervinho of Arsenal FC
To play possession football requires all players to be highly capable performers on and off the ball. The players who tend to have more time and space to begin attacking play – are back players. We have rarely conceived the idea that our back players should be equally good starters of attacking play but merely good stoppers of it! So right at the beginning of the ‘keep-ball performance’ we find players without the playing quality to provide the ‘opening prelude’. Opposing teams’ recognize this weakness and make it difficult for limited skills to flourish – this causes panic especially when nervous back players are caught close to their own goal.
Football of the quality we see from abroad has been ‘downloaded’ over many years to players as they have developed – not forced in a few months! Skill quality in all positions is maximised abroad whereas here we have substituted ability for athleticism. Yes, athleticism etc. is an important ingredient in top sporting ability, but we have sacrificed skill to the ‘God of power and pugilism’. Tactical variations that are necessary to offset the problem of pressurization in games is virtually non-existent due to the inability of our players to modify and adapt the ‘installed roboticism’ they have acquired from day one of their football upbringing. It has become painfully obvious that the playing quality we see today here, even with the ‘imported mercenaries’, is falling further and further behind other leading football nations. The impatience ‘infecting’ our game is not just seen on the fields of play, but in Boardrooms, amongst Committee’s and Selectors etc. at all levels, who see winning as a priority without noting that….. ‘all fame is fleeting’ and that ‘patience is a virtue’.

_________ Fake It Until You Make It – Does That Really Work? Minimal exposure to sport psychology reveals
Body poses that reduce our size signal weakness something we intuitively know: Our minds can and pessimism to the brain. change our bodies. Lots of research verifies the Posing like Superman or Superwoman is mentally reality that a change in an athlete’s thinking – beneficial because of the shift in hormones that is from negative to positive or the other way generated. Those who interviewed the subjects in around -- can cause a physical change in Cuddy’s study reported that a two minute power performance levels. But here’s an interesting pose prior to the interview produced an authentic question: Do our bodies change our minds? Does "presence" of enthusiasm, passion, and a comfort it work the other way around? level not found in the subjects that were no t asked According to Harvard social psychologist Amy Cuddy, the answer is "yes", and we may want to let our children know what her research has revealed. It seems that our body language not only communicates to others, but also communicates to ourselves. Feelings of power, confidence, assertiveness, and optimism are associated with higher levels of the hormone testosterone, while feelings of powerlessness, doubt, risk-aversion, and pessimism are associated with higher levels of the stress reactor hormone cortisol.
to assume a power pose before the interview.
We’ve always known that strong leaders in any field have higher testosterone and lower cortisol in stressful situations than most people. What we didn’t know is that assuming certain body postures for as little as two minutes can actually increase testosterone and decrease cortisol in the body. Body poses that expand our size produce greater feelings of confidence and optimism.
Dr. Rob Gilbert, a sport psychologist from Montclair, New Jersey made it most clear when he said, "Act the way you want to become, until you become the way you act." It’s easier to act your way into a feeling than to feel your way into an action! Show your child how to use two minutes in the privacy of their room to take advantage of the body-mind connection.
The phrase "fake it until you make it" contains more truth than just wishful thinking. The practical application is that any of us, including our children, can increase the chances of performing confidently and ultimately becoming more of what we were meant to be by managing our body language. Cuddy’s research confirms that all we need is our body and two minutes of time. The good news is that by consistently using our bodies AND our minds we can do more than fake it; we can become it.

History of Santos Football Club of Brazil The history of Santos Futebol Clube goes from the football club's founding in 1912 and up to current time. Santos FC, also known simply as "Santos" and familiarly as "Peixe", is based in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil. The team was founded in on April 14, 1912, by the initiative of three sports enthusiasts from Santos by the names of Raimundo Marques, Mário Ferraz de Campos, and Argemiro de Souza Júnior. In 1962, the club participated in their first of many South American competitions, and has since amassed seven CONMEBOL trophies and a quadruple. In 1971, Santos co-founded the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top-tier in Brazilian football, along with a string of other clubs. Football was introduced to Brazil by a Scottish expatriate named Thomas Donohue, with the first football match played in Brazil in April 1894, played on a pitch marked out by Donohue next to his workplace in Bangu, In the 1870s, like many other British workers, a Scottish expatriate named John Miller, worked on the railway construction project in São Paulo with other European immigrants.
In 1884, Miller sent his 10-year-old son Charles William Miller to Bannister School in Southampton, England to be educated. Charles was a skilled athlete who quickly picked up the game of football at the time when the Football League was still being formed, and as an accomplished winger and striker Charles held school honors that gained him entry into the Southampton Football Club team, and later into the County team of Hampshire. On his return to Brazil, Charles brought two footballs and a set of Hampshire FA rules in his suitcase. He then taught the rules of the game to players in São Paulo.

The eight-team National Women’s Soccer League, the latest attempt over the past 12 years to establish a sustainable Division I women’s professional league, begins play this weekend with four games spread across the United States. But this time there is a twist: the league is administered by the United States Soccer Federation, the sport’s national governing body, and the best players will be paid by the federations of the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Perhaps the average USWNT fan does not know much about the teenage sensation, Lindsey Horan. After her first-ever senior team roster selection, and predicted debut in the upcoming Algarve Cup, that will almost certainly no longer be the case. The 18-year-old's path to the senior national team is an unorthodox one. Most of her career has been unique. Instead of attending college and competing in the NCAA, Horan left the states for Europe, specifically France and the famous club, Paris SaintGermain, to play professional soccer. She is the first member of the senior women's U.S. team to forgo college as well as the first American woman to ever get a professional contract in Europe immediately following high school. The recent controversy surrounding Liverpool forward Luis Suarez and his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has left the Uruguayan striker facing months of inactivity, as the FA handed down a hefty 10-match ban in his direction. ROGER MILLER – Cameroon’s “Connu pour son Célèbre après la danse d’angle” (Known for his famous corner post dancing) Roger Miller (born Albert Roger Mooh Miller, 20 May 1952) born in the Cameroonian capital of Yaoundé, he moved constantly as a child because of his father's railroad job. He signed for his first club in Douala as a 13-year-old. At 18, he won his first league championship with another Douala club. In 1974, by which time he had moved to Tonnerre Yaoundé and was awarded the African Footballer of the Year award. In 1977, he was lured to Europe by the French club Valenciennes. However, he was kept on the reserves for two years. In 1979, he joined AS Monaco, but shuttled between the reserves' bench and the injury list. The next year, he joined Bastia, but still did not flourish. He finally found stardom at Saint-Etienne in 1984; he then starred for Montpellier from 1986 to 1989, and became a member of the club's coaching staff after retiring from French football
Roger Miller doing his famous corner post dancing after scoring goals) A retired Cameroonian footballer who played as a striker. He was one of the first African players to be a major star on the international stage.
He played in three World Cups for the Cameroon national team. He achieved international stardom at 38 years old, an age at which most forwardplaying footballers have retired, by scoring four goals at the 1990 World Cup, the most memorable of which came in the match against Colombia when he dispossessed the showboating Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita 35 yards from goal, going on to score in the empty net with Higuita stranded. He helped the Cameroon team reach the quarterfinals.
He is also remembered for his trademark goal celebration of running to the corner flag and performing a dance. In the years that have followed, he has been recognized as a pioneer of the many unconventional and imaginative goal celebrations seen since then. He was named one of the 125 greatest living football players in 2004 by the legendary Brazilian football player Pelé. While playing in France, he made his first appearance for the Cameroon national team (in 1978). He was a member of Cameroon's team at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, having a goal disallowed against Peru in their first match. SoccerDroid eMagazine - May 2013 40
Cameroon went out with three draws from their three first-round games. Two years later, he was part of the squad competing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. He first retired from international football in 1987, and eventually moved to RĂŠunion in the Indian Ocean for his retirement. However, in 1990, he received a phone call from the President of Cameroon Paul Biya, who pleaded with him to come out of retirement and rejoin the national team. He agreed, and went to Italy with the Indomitable Lions for the 1990 World Cup.
38-year old Milla emerged as one of the tournament's major stars. He scored four goals in Italy, celebrating each one with a dance around the corner post that has become a popular goal celebration ever since. Two of his goals came against Romania in Cameroon's second game, and two more came in extra time against Colombia in the last 16 to carry Cameroon to the quarter-finals, the furthest an African team had ever advanced at the World Cup (Senegal matched this feat in 2002, and Ghana matched it in 2010). In the quarter-final match against England, Milla confirmed his supersub legend by entering in the second half with Cameroon trailing 1–0 and drawing a penalty and then setting up a goal for Ekeke to give Cameroon the lead before eventually losing 3–2. His second goal celebration against Colombia has been the subject of the 2010 World Cup Coca Cola advertisement
Four years later, and incredibly Milla was back for USA 94. Although Cameroon were eliminated at the group stage, he still managed to grab a goal against Russia, thereby setting a new record as the oldest scorer at a FIFA World Cup, at the age of 42. It is not his only record; he is also the first African to have played in three finals tournaments. A man of great generosity and humanity, he now devotes his time to African causes. An itinerant ambassador for Cameroon and UNAIDS, he is tireless in his globe-trotting work, but don't ever ask him how many goals or caps he has. "I don't know. It never interested me. Football was all that mattered." The quote sums up the man.

The introduction of captain's armband and captainship in soccer The first international match was played between England and Scotland in 1872the two captains for these teams were Robert Gardner for Scotland and Cuthbard Ottoway for England. The captainancy has always existed as The Laws Of The Games state a captain is needed to decide the toss at the start of the match and before a penalty shootout. The armband is simply a symbol of the captaincy which shows the crowds and the players who to look at for inspiration as it his responsibility to be a role model for the fellow players
The 1936 FA Cup Final was a football match between Arsenal and Sheffield United on 25 April 1936 at Wembley. Harry Hooper of Sheffield United and Alex James of Arsenal, two Captains shake hands at the start of the matchThe showpiece match of English football's primary cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (better known as the FA Cup), it was the 64th Cup final, and the fourteenth at the national stadium.

The team captain of an association football team, sometimes known as the skipper, is a team member chosen to be the on-pitch leader of the team: it is often one of the older or more experienced members of the squad, or a player that can heavily influence a game. The team captain is usually identified by the wearing of an armband. The only official responsibility of a captain specified by the Laws of the Game is to participate in the coin toss prior to kick-off (for choice of ends) and prior to a penalty shootout. Contrary to what is sometimes claimed, captains have no special authority under the Laws to challenge a decision by the referee. However, referees may talk to the captain of a side about the side's general behaviour when necessary. At an award-giving ceremony after a fixture like a cup competition final, the captain usually leads the team up to collect their medals
Any trophy won by a team will be received by the captain who will also be the first one to hoist it, similar to a captain in the National Hockey League when they raise the Stanley Cup. The captain generally provides a rallying point for the team: if morale is low, it is the captain who will be looked upon to boost their team's spirits. Captains may join the manager in deciding the first team for a certain game. In youth or recreational football, the captain often takes on duties, that would, at a higher level, be delegated to the manager. The captain is usually a midfielder or defender, and less often the goalkeeper; a striker, due to the more onedimensional nature of his position up front, is rarely called upon to wear the armband.

A club captain is usually appointed for a season. If he is unavailable or not selected for a particular game, then the club vice-captain will be appointed to perform a similar role. The match captain is the first player to lift a trophy should the team win one, even if he was not the club captain. A good example of this was in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final when match captain Peter Schmeichel lifted the trophy for Manchester United as club captain Roy Keane was suspended. In the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, match captain (who was the vice-captain) Frank Lampard jointly lifted the trophy for Chelsea with club captain John Terry (who was suspended, but given permission by UEFA). A club may appoint two distinct roles: a club captain to represent the players in a public relations role, and correspondent on the pitch. Manchester United has had both of these types of captains; Roy Keane was the club captain on and off the pitch from 1997 to 2005 as he was a regular in the starting eleven, but his successor Gary Neville while nominally club captain from 2005 to 2010 had made few first team appearances due to injuries and in his absence other players (Rio Ferdinand or vice-captain Ryan Giggs) were chosen to skipper the team on the field, such as in the 2008 (Ferdinand was captain as he was in the starting XI, while Giggs was a substitute) and 2009 UEFA Champions League Finals, respectively. After Neville retired in 2011, regular starter Nemanja Vidić was named as club captain. A vice-captain is a player that is expected to captain the side when the club's captain is not included in the starting eleven, or if, during a game, the captain is substituted or sent off. Often the vice-captain is appointed the new club captain upon the departure of the incumbent, such as Ike A vice-captain is a player that is expected to captain the side when the club's captain is not included in the starting eleven, or if, during a game, the captain is substituted or sent off. Often the vice-captain is appointed the new club captain upon the departure of the incumbent, such as Iker Casillas taking over from Raúl González at Real Madrid and Philipp Lahm succeeding Mark van Bommel at Bayern Munich. Casillas and Lahm held the captaincies of their respective national teams, Spain and Germany, respectively, when they assumed the same role at their clubs.. SoccerDroid eMagazine - May 2013 46
Have you made the jump from static stretching to dynamic stretching? I remember distinctly the warm-up routines I went through as a young high school athlete. Nothing but lots of ballistic exercises from jumping jacks to mountain climbs to squat thrusts. All, I might add, to the four-count military cadence. When I hit college, in came the static stretching standard that has been the basis for all warm-up routines for many years now. Now, we have a new, scientifically researched standard that is being promoted as the more effective way to really warm-up and, at the same time, improve power, balance, and flexibility. Welcome to “Dynamic Stretching!”In fact, I just left one of our high school’s summer conditioning sessions where the first activity written on the schedule was “Dynamics.” We are most fortunate in Greenville, South Carolina, to have as a partner to our sports programs the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Their team includes the Acceleration Sports Institute (ASI) and Proaxis Therapy. These two companies, like Steadman Hawkins, are national leaders in their respective fields. The last two workshops we had for our coaches included sessions on dynamic stretching presented by the ASI and Proaxis staffs. These were powerful presentations, with actual demonstrations and video clips of dynamic stretching routines. Suffice it to say that all of our teams have embraced these as the basis for their warm-up routines. To watch our teams come out before a game, and start to do exercises that more closely resemble ballet dancers warming up than athletes getting ready for competition, is quite a site. Dynamic stretching replaces the old static stretching routine of holding each position for ten to thirty seconds for warming up before practices and competitions. Its name, “dynamic,” defines each exercise as requiring some kind of movement. These exercises come with names like “straight-leg march,” “scorpion,” “spider-man walks,” “hand-walks,” “Grouchos” and “butt kicks.” The research on dynamic stretching counters the static method with results showing an increase in overall athletic performance. Many findings indicate that static stretching actually decreases muscle strength (at least temporarily) whereas dynamic stretching increases strength, power, balance and range of motion. Since dynamic exercises require movement, they literally warm the muscles by increasing blood flow significantly.
