PFC's elite Team Adidas Oct. 14th 2012
It’s ON!... Team Adidas, Starts with 5-1 win over LW Shark FC. in Gold Coast SDL.
Juan Gonzalez – Midfielder for PFC, engineer of the quick transition attack on LW Sharks FC. Plantation FC Team Adidas took a major step towards winning the Gold Coast SD League with an impressive 5-1 win over LW Sharks FC at Cypress Soccer Park, Coral Spring FL. With the player eager to get the ball on the roll, they certainly display it in this encounter. 17 minutes in the first half the breakthrough came when Manuel Gonzalez and Gonzalo Demujica played one-two combination to dismiss the LW Sharks defenders, then Gonzalo puts away a well placed strike to put PFC 1-0 lead. LW Shark probing attacks did put PFC Team Adidas on the retreat, midway first half. Acosta cautioned play rewarded LW Sharks FC a free kick just 10 yards out from the penalty area. With a direct shot on goal the ball looped to upper left hand corn of the goal and Goalkeeper Cedric Guichard – from PFC youth program had no chance to stop it. The game is now 1-1 and PFC Team Adidas now realize their opponent is here to play, they stepped up the tempo with quick passes and which gives Ahmed Ibraham (from the youth program) his first goal on his debut playing for Team Adidas.
Jaime Saenz - Forward, Top striker for PFC Team Adidas scoring his first goal to start the 2012-2013 season. SoccerDroid eMagazine - November 2012
10
Now the “IT’s ON”… Jamie Saenz PFC Team Adidas top striker his first goal of the season to put them up 3-1. LW Sharks FC could not keep up the pace for PFC Team Adidas quick passes and transition style of play. Five minutes in the second half and PFC Team Adidas is on it again, quick passes and transition plays had LW Sharks on heels. Fast pace, accurate passing on the left side between Darwin Aldair, Kenneth Jackson which served a low cross to Gonzalo in front of the goal, which then made a beautiful pass (set play) to Juan Gonzalez the chance to strike at goal with unstoppable shot which curve, like a “Messi style goal” and it’s 4-1. Still LW Sharks FC try to steal a march on couple counter attacks,
Demujica - Forward on the move as PFC looks unstoppable in the 2nd half against LW Sharks FC.
As the game wore on, PFC run of plays worn down LW Sharks FC defensive plays, they end up fouling Cleveland BrownFormer USA youth prospect in the penalty box. Jaime Saenz stepped up and executed well with a well placed penalty and scored. Now it‘s 5-1 and PFC Team Adidas now knows they have this game sealed. As for the fans and PFC Team Adidas manger, this is encouraging. They are happy for this first win in The Gold Coast SD League (pre-season league games) a spring –board to defend their title in next CASA League season 2012-2013.
Manuel Gonzalez - Midfielder, undoubtedly one the most skilled player with precise passing thread LW Sharks FC.
but with PFC Team Adidas well organized defense, tactical positioning and strength, Sharks could not attack with that decisive “bit” to score again.
The coaching staff , “We have a lots more to get done to be on the right path” according to Anis Jerbi and Michael Barton coaches of team PFC.

Individualism…..or the lack of it!
I
am no Mourinho or Guardiola, but after undergoing
the L1 and L2 Coach Ed courses together with the License Holders Course organized by Premier Skills, I look back at my first three years as a football educator before this moment and realize how false my sessions used to be! It has also opened my eyes a lot to the problems I see with coaching in Malta: I see many “know--it--alls” and ex--footballers who talk, talk, talk, who believe they can coach purely because of their position or playing reputation, but who quiet frankly, can’t and don’t! I see a lot of coaches that focus on their own personal success and results when they should be focusing on developing players – It’s all about how many games they`ve won! I see a lot of coaches that do it as a hobby or as a side job to earn extra pocket money, without realizing how delicate their role is! What most of the coaches have in common is that they don’t understand that coaching isn’t easy! We as coaches are responsible for a child's dream – every young kid wants to become a professional footballer! A few percentage end up making it, but that shouldn't stop all good kids becoming the best they can be. The potential in ANY child is tremendous – and one can only obtain the best out of them with the right coaching!
The Malta Football Association, since the new President Norman Darmanin Demajo was elected 2 seasons ago, has strived to improve the level of Maltese football. They provided70% of clubs with new training facilities, they have improved the running organization of football events and have worked closer to the Youth FA (association responsible for youth football on the island), and provided and distributed more funds for the academies. They kicked off an ambitious project with the 1998 age group – the MFA selected boys to take part in an ongoing program that consists of two training sessions and a full days training every week. Furthermore, they reduced the Coach Edu coaching courses fee from the ridiculous fees they were at. All this sounds like great development on such a small island with limited resources………BUT have they improved the coaching in order to develop better players? Are the sessions realistic to the game? Are all the players constantly involved or are they lining up in ques waiting for turns? Do the sessions keep the players on their toes by having them make decisions on time and space throughout?
SoccerDroid eMagazine - November 2012
17
Everyone in Malta boasts that they are teaching their team the ‘Barcelona way’ – and all you see while going around sessions is control and pass or one touch football. It is a false belief that Barcelona play one or two touch football – they do use it when necessary, but not because the coach tells them play one/two touch because they have recognized that is the right option! How many times do you see Pique running out with the ball from the back and overloading in midfield, or Xavi and Iniesta twisting and turning through midfield. The potential here in Malta is big for such a small island, however, coaches remove that little bit of brilliance which the kid can offer when expressing himself by forcing them to play one and two touch. I am forever seeing players giving the ball away because they try play one touch when they actually had the time and space to turn and keep the ball that little bit longer, and create something out of it. Football is a team game, but you need an individual’s piece of magic to sometimes make things happen, that’s why no matter how off teams are on a day, you just know that players like Xavi, Iniesta , Messi or Naymar create that extra meter of space and take full advantage of it, they will punish you.
That’s why it is our duty as coaches to let the show their individualism and deliver real sessions and exercises related to the game rather than us controlling them as if they’re PlayStation players. Our coaching must give players the tools which will help their decision making in the game. I am proud in saying that since having met Roger and Sam in England and been on the Premier Skills courses, my coaching has improved tremendously, and the improvement of every kid, no matter the age and ability has been phenomenal. It was these fantastic results which made me obliged to pass on this to other maltese coaches and introduce Premier Skills Practice Play methodology into my Footy4U Football School. Having said all this about Malta, what worries me is that after having visited a number of professional academies in Europe, there appears to be the same problem! And with a lot of our boys going up on trial and even on the verge of signing, I ask myself if they will remain good players or even make the step up and become great players if they enter this system?

Birth of :
The new vision‌ 3rd June 1892 - Tradition When the Football League was founded in 1888, Anfield was one of the League's original grounds. On September 8th of that year - the very first Saturday of League football - Anfield welcomed as visitors Accrington to play not against the 'Reds', but the 'Blues' of Everton Football Club.
John Houlding's split from Everton that gave birth to Liverpool – 1892.
The blue and white quartered shirts of Everton FC made quite a name for themselves at Anfield winning the League Championship in 1891, but this is to run ahead slightly. Both teams owe their existence to a Reverend Chambers of the then newly constructed and now, totally demolished, church - St Domingo, and to John Houlding - Tory MP and Mayor of Liverpool who ultimately caused Everton FC to leave Anfield and who created Liverpool Football Club
.
SoccerDroid eMagazine - November 2012
20
St Domingo's football team was a strictly amateur affair created amid the belief that young lads could better be kept on the path of religious well-being through a healthy passion for competitive team games. After only a year or so of enthusiastic play in Stanley Park, they renamed themselves Everton Football Club in honour of the location of their founding church. The St Domingo's team met however not at Church, but the Queen's Head Hotel in Village Street adjacent to "Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House". From this Everton F.C. gained their curious nickname of "The Toffees". In adopting the name Everton, the team ensured that they would permanently struggle to be located with confidence by those from outside of the city and lead to Royalty asking "Tell me, from which part of the country is the city of Everton?" nearly a century later.
The fledgling Everton played in a number of locations but settled in a greenfield site between Anfield Road and Walton Breck Road. So was born one of the great names in world football - Anfield. The team prospered and became financially sound with astute guidance from their President Mr John Houlding. John Houlding was a brewer, local council member and later Mayor of Liverpool.
For a man responsible for the development of Everton and the creation of Liverpool Football Club, it is amazing how little he is remembered. There are however a few landmarks in the area where Houlding was known as "King John of Everton". The very short 'Houlding Street' has on it's corner the 'Sandon' pub. This pub was once owned by Houlding and he led many meetings of Everton Football Club from here in the bowls pavilion that existed to the rear. The place was also used as a dressing room by the players for many years. Both Everton and later Liverpool football teams were first photographed in front of this bowls pavilion. It can be questioned whether Everton would have been one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888 without Houlding's assistance. He brought Everton to Anfield in 1884. They previously rented a little field in Priory Road, north of Stanley Park, but they were unwelcome because of the noisy crowds on match days. So Houlding went to his friend and fellow brewer, Mr. Orrell, who owned a place in Anfield Road and conducted the business to get a new home ground. But it was from this point on that criticism of the club President started to grow from some members of the Everton board, building up to a crisis in 1892.
It was not the rent alone that annoyed the board members. Houlding also wanted only his sparkling ales to be sold at the ground, and he of course profited very considerably from this arrangement. However it was still John Houlding that helped the club out when they need money to buy players and rebuild the ground.
SoccerDroid eMagazine - November 2012
21
The Sandon's use as dressing room was an arrangement that really only suited Houlding as he again benefited from his players drinking his products. A letter in the Liverpool Echo in January 1892 suggested that Houlding didn't want the club to move out of the pub. The writer says: "It's a disgrace that at a big club such as Everton, players have to walk through hordes of people on match days."
Jack Balmer achieved much in his 17-year Anfield career, not least the feat of scoring hattricks in three consecutive games in 1946 The conflict on how the club should be managed and conduct its business came to a head in 1889-90. The rent at Anfield went up again. Everton FC paid ÂŁ100 in 1884. By 1889-90 Houlding was charging them ÂŁ250. Houlding had many practical and realistic solutions on how they could solve this situation. One was to transform Everton into a plc. On the 15th of September 1891 he chaired a meeting about the issue. The local press was banned as he predicted trouble ahead. And trouble it was. Houlding suggested that Everton FC should buy Anfield and also some land he owned adjoining the ground. The price seemed high and the members said no. Although with the growing development of football and the club, the land would soon have paid for itself. In October the same year, the on-going deadlock over this situation resulted in the vast majority of the Board and players of Everton F.C. walking out to build a new ground. Houlding explained why this situation arose in a match programme against Cliftonville in April 1893. He pointed out that he had given Everton a rent free loan until the club started to make money. If the club had gone bust he would have lost it all.
Despite making no profit in this respect, the issue that upset the members at Everton most was his plan to sell Anfield and the land adjoining, with Houlding himself profiting. He felt it was a reasonable reward for the risk he had ventured in the club for nine years. Houlding, as the ambitious businessman he was, saw a great future for the club. He wanted the club to have its own home ground and wanted them to buy land so the club could expand in due course. Unfortunately most of the Everton FC board members failed to share his forward thinking and lacked confidence. They wanted instead a long term rent deal on all the land, but for this to be acceptable to Houlding, he wanted a rent at a price considered too high for the Club. The members reacted to that by "offering" Houlding less rent. Houlding unsurprisingly refused to accept this stating that he did not want to be dictated: "I cannot understand why a gentleman that has done so much for the club (Everton) and its members should be given such treatment". The official split between Houlding and Everton took place on the 12th of March 1892. At a members meeting one of the opponents George Mahon, led the meeting when John Houlding unexpectedly turned up. Mahon stood up to give the club's President the chair. But surrounded by "enemies" Mr. Houlding said the famous words: "I'm here on a trial, and a criminal never takes the chair". He then left the club with 1819 other members.
Liverpool F.C. was formed on the 15th of March 1892. It was at John Houlding's house in Anfield Road that he and his closest friends left from Everton FC, formed a new club. William.E.Barclay, a great football enthusiast, strongly suggested that they should go on with a new name: Liverpool. However, it was not until 3rd June that the name Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Ltd was formally recognised by the Board of Trade, and the club could start to make history. CONCACAF FIFA World Cup™ qualifying
All on the line in CONCACAF Eddie Johnson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 90th minute, to lift the USA to a 21 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in CONCACAF FIFA World Cup™ qualifying on October 12, 2012. Eddie took a nice pass from substitute Alan Gordon and headed the ball past goalkeeper Molvin James for the winner. The Americans appeared to be heading to a surprising draw with win-less Antigua before Johnson's heroics at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in St. John's. The result moves the USA to top of their qualifying group, three points ahead of Guatemala and Jamaica. The USA have one more game in the semi-final qualifying round on Tuesday. Johnson scored his first goal in the 20th minute, heading home another accurate cross, this time from Graham Zusi. Antigua tied it up just five minutes later with Pete 'Big Pete' Byers driving into the area on the right and then sending the ball to Dexter Blackstock, who was inside the six-yard box for an easy finish. The Americans created few chances after halftime and Antigua nearly went in front in the final ten minutes as Byers curled a drive just wide of the right post. Antiguan goalkeeper James then produced a good save on Michael Bradley's header to keep the match even.
Carlos Ruiz scored with a header in the 85th minute and gave Guatemala a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on Qct. 12th 2012 to put the Chapines on the verge of advancing to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.
Mexico scored five times in the final 12 minutes and subdued Guyana 5-0 Friday night to formally eliminate the Caribbean side from CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Mexico, which already had secured its place in the sixteam final round of qualifying, won its fifth straight having outscored its opponents 13-2.

The Final Round hexagonal qualifying stage will be played from Feb. 6 through Oct. 15, 2013. The USA finished at the head of the group with a 4-1-1 record and 13 points and improved its 2012 record to 9-2-2, earning its best winning percentage (0.769) in the modern era. Jamaica (3-21, 10 points) took second place in Group A and moved ahead of Guatemala on goal differential following its 4-1 victory against Antigua & Barbuda.
Jamaica - Dane Richards scored twice in the final 12 minutes, completing Jamaica's 4-1 victory over Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday and providing the goals necessary to send the Reggae Boyz into the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Richards volleyed a ball from eight meters in the 78th that was played into the middle by Rodolph Austin, who had worked his way past three defenders on the right side of the penalty area. He added a finale 10 minutes later to assure Jamaica of advancing. Combined with the United States' 3-1 victory over Guatemala in Kansas City, Kansas, in a match that was played simultaneously, the Americans won Group A with 13 points, three more than both the Chapines and Jamaica. But Richards' goal gave Jamaica a plus-3 goal difference, two better than Guatemala. The result leaves Jamaica as the only Caribbean representative in the six-team "hexagonal" round and returns the Reggae Boyz, who qualified for the 1998 World Cup, to the final phase of qualifying after it missed in 2010.

Buddle looking for goal to spark his injury comeback for L.A. Oct. 11, 2012 The Int'l break offers time to adjust, prepare - Timber The good news for the Portland Timbers is they’ll have plenty of time to recuperate from Oct. 7th, 3-0 loss to rival Seattle Sounders. McAuley said the club will take advantage of extended international break to fix some issues on the training field. The team trained again Thursday and have one more session on Friday before a weekend off.
Edson Buddle knows what he most needs these days is a goal, and he believes he's going to get one any moment now. That wouldn't quite complete his comeback from knee surgery, but it sure would help him find his place with the LA Galaxy. The veteran forward has tallied just twice in a campaign loaded with little setbacks and one big stoppage, a three-month absence after undergoing surgery at the end of May to repair his right meniscus. “That's the most important thing for a striker,” said Buddle, who is eight away from his 100th MLS regularseason goal. “That's how I eat – what I'm paid to do is score goals.”
They’ll return Monday to prepare for their next game Oct. 21, on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps, where despite the Seattle result they can still clinch their first Cascadia Cup of the MLS era.
He had 15 in 2008 and 17 (plus two more in the playoffs) two years ago, but he hasn't been able to contribute the way he'd like since returning to LA in January following a year in Germany. He's never been 100 percent this season and since returning to the field in August he has struggled to make an impact, still trying to find his path back.

Goal! Raheem Sterling find the back of the net with a goal just inside the area to bottom left hand corner of the goal. Liverpool win 1-0 Reading, assist by Luis Suarez . A first home win for Liverpool and Manager Brendan Rogers
The England U21 international netted his first senior goal to give Brendan Rodgers his first top-flight win at Anfield with the Reds. Johnson, who was the Liverpoolfc.com journalists' star man, admitted it was no more than the youngster deserved to net the only goal of the game. Forward Raheem Sterling scored his first Liverpool goal to give manager Brendan Rodgers his maiden home win in the Barclays Premier League against his former club Reading. The England Under-21 winger, at 17 years and 317 days old, became the club’s second-youngest Premier League goals corer behind Michael Owen. The first half was almost all Liverpool but the hosts lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Sterling found himself in the best attacking positions on several occasions but only managed to get a shot on target once. Left-back Glen Johnson was also enjoying a lot of possession in the final third but he looked more threatening when cutting inside on his right foot.

2012 French champions merge luck with talent (FIFA U17 girls world cup) Throughout the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Azerbaijan 2012, champions France showed not just confidence, strength and elegance, but also a remarkable level of consistency. By beating Korea DPR 7-6 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw in the Final, France again demonstrated those key qualities. However, Lady Luck played a part as well.
The smiles are in stark contrast to the tears that flowed after the final of the recent UEFA European Women’s U-17 Championship, a match that Les Bleuettes lost to Germany, also via a penalty shoot-out.

That miss spelled the end of the New Zealand 2008 champions’ dream of a second title and ended AFC representatives' 100 per cent success rate, with Korea Republic having won the second edition of this competition at Trinidad & Tobago 2010. Final defeat thus confirmed, the No16 fell sobbing to the turf, where her also disconsolate teammates quickly rushed to comfort her. One of the pre-tournament favorites for the crown at Azerbaijan 2012, Korea DPR started the competition well but found it increasingly difficult to click into gear come the knockout stages – eventually succumbing to a strong French side in the decider.
After no fewer than 15 penalties, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title was still in the balance at the Tofig Bahramov Stadium in Baku when Korea DPR’s Ri Un-Yong stepped up to take her spot-kick, only to be denied by the gloves of France goalkeeper Romane Bruneau.

U.S. Women’s Soccer League - Going Belly-Up? The league, which played with six teams in 2011, announced it was going on hiatus in January amid a lawsuit with one of its owners, Dan Borislow, who owned the Florida franchise magicJack. The league and Borislow announced Friday that they had settled their litigation; in a separate statement the league announced that it had decided to terminate all operations. The league’s owners had lost several million dollars during its three-year run.
Talks on a new women's professional league have progressed to the point where it is possible a new circuit, with the backing of U.S. Soccer and under the management of the United Soccer Leagues, could kick off in 2013, according to U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. U.S. Soccer has had discussions with 11 groups representing 10 cities. The groups include former teams in Women's Professional Soccer, which folded before it started its 2012 season, as well as
.
MLS teams and current USL teams Player salaries and travel costs were two of the biggest expenses for the two previously failed women's leagues, with the high salaries commanded by National Team players proving particularly onerous for team owners, who also needed to have those players in their squads in order to sell tickets. The WPS got a boost when national team players returned to the league following the 2011 Women's World Cup, but not enough to keep it together for 2012. It’s perhaps thought the buzz generated from this year's Olympic win could help launch another league next year, although that was the thinking when the Women's United Soccer association was launched in 2001 on the heels of the 1999 Women's World Cup.
The end of WPS would marks the second time in nine years that a women’s professional league has failed despite the popularity of the U.S. women’s national team, which became a sensation last summer during the Women’s World Cup in Germany. In 2003, the Women’s United Soccer Association collapsed despite the effort of stars like Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy and tens of millions of dollars of investments. WPS launched in 2009 on a much smaller scale but suffered from several of the same problems as WUSA – miniscule television ratings and disappointing attendance. Several top players have called for a semi-pro model that will allow them to continue to play competitively but require them to hold down other jobs as well.

Johan Cruyff Cruyff:: Dutch soccer master A
tragedy of the history of the World Cup is
Johan Cruyff's participation in just one finals tournament. A visionary thinker, Cruyff's impact on Dutch football is such that he is credited with spearheading (possibly even inventing) the style of 'Total Football' that saw him win a host of honours in the late 60s and early 70s, but his appearance in what has been termed 'The Lost Final' in 1974 was, sadly, his single appearance at football's showpiece event.
As the model for an entire generation, Cruyff's artistry led the way for an entirely new breed of footballer and changed the philosophy of the game from its very root. His career was never one to follow an established path - as he showed with his attitude to sponsors, fellow team-mates and authority over the years - but in the collective spirit of the Dutch system, he provided the injection of individualism that it needed to succeed. As a youngster, Cruyff was brought through the youth ranks at Ajax Amsterdam and made his debut for the club at the age of 17. He immediately began directing traffic. A skinny kid, with incredible stamina, Cruyff's understanding of space (even at that early stage) was apparent. It has been the subject of many books, but the movement, speed and grace with which the midfielder moved the ball around was something to behold and his creative talent was at the heart of all that was good about Ajax.
Up until 1970, Holland's international record was not far away from that of Poland in terms of appearances at major tournaments (their last being in 1938). However, by the time 1974 rolled around, the impact of Cryuff and Rinus Michels in bringing 'Total Football' to the world had made the Dutch one of the favourites to lift the trophy. With a host of players from his days at Ajax, including Johan Neeskens, Ruud Krol and Johnny Rep at his disposal, Holland's new coach Michels made the changes at international level that he had successfully managed domestically and it brought immediate success. Although they netted nine against Norway and eight against Iceland, to showcase their skills in the qualifiers, the Dutch still needed a lucky break to get them to the tournament as Belgium's Jan Verheyen had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside in the dying seconds of their final game which would have seen Michels' side forced to miss out once again. However, luck was on their side and Cruyff (who had left Ajax to join Michels at Barcelona in 1973) was the focal point as the side headed to West Germany. Two weeks before the tournament, the Dutch lost 20 to a Second Division German side, but in their final friendly they hammered Argentina 4-1 in a friendly to restore confidence. The opening game of the tournament provided signs that Cruyff 's mission to ingrain his attacking instincts would serve his country well and, up against the ultra-defensive Uruguayans, they won 2-0 (although it could have easily have been six).

In helping change the very essence of the game, Cruyff accumulated a host of personal honours, chief among them his eight Eredivisie titles, three back-to-back European Cups from 1971-73 and three European Player of the Season trophies in four seasons from 1971-74. He invented the 'Cruyff Turn' - a move which confused the most accomplished of defenders - and then forged a successful career as a manager with both Ajax and Barcelona before eventually retiring from the game completely in 1996. The one glaring omission from Cruyff's CV is on the international stage. That most likely still gives the great man nightmares to this day.
In the final group game, up against a tough, abrasive Brazil side virtually unrecognisable from the 1970 World Cup vintage of Pele and Tostao, Cruyff once again proved the difference as he sealed a 2-0 win after the Dutch had, uncharacteristically, been dominated in the opening exchanges. He would lead Holland into their first major final to face European champions West Germany and many assumed that, thanks to their attacking style, he would end the tournament with the trophy trophy. However, despite the fact that the Germans could consider themselves lucky to be in the final after a particularly poor run that saw them booed by their own fans, the side led by talismanic defender Franz Beckebauer walked away with the prize having turned around a 1-0 deficit. On the day of the match, German tabloid Bild Zeitung had run a headline of 'Cruyff, Sekt, nackte M채dchen und ein k체hles Bad' (Cruyff, champagne, naked girls and a cool bath) which maintained that the Dutch side had partied into the early hours with some unnamed German girls prior to the Brazil match. Michels accused the German press of mind games and no pictures were ever printed of the alleged 'party,' but the result was that it disrupted Holland's preparations. Indeed, according to writer Auke Kok, Cruyff spent hours on the phone the day before the final attempting to convince his wife, Danny, that nothing had happened.
The 'Cruyff Turn' - a move which confused most players. Having burst onto the scene in 1964 with his club, Holland's failure to qualify for the 1966 World Cup in England ensured that Cruyff would not make his international bow until after the tournament had finished. He made his debut against Hungary, and was sent off in only his second game for his country against Czechoslovakia, but qualifying defeats to Poland and Bulgaria in 1970, meant that the Dutch would have to wait for a further four years for their chance to unleash him at a World Cup. The side bounced back from a disappointing 0-0 draw with Sweden in the next game to demolish Bulgaria 4-1 and progress to the next round, with Cruyff coming into his own in a group that featured Brazil, Argentina and East Germany. Scoring twice against Argentina in a 4-0 win, the midfielder baffled his opponents to such an extent that they were forced to resort to flagrant fouling to keep the score respectable. They simply could not handle the fluid attacking movements of the Dutch.
Cruyff's international exploits may have only seen him play in a single World Cup, and accrue just 48 appearances for his country (albeit scoring 33 goals in the process), but his career will be remembered for his impact on the sport as a whole. His insight, vision and trailblazing approach to ensuring that attacking football remained an integral part of the game mark him out as one of the greats; a true Dutch master. The History of FIFA World Cup - Jules Rimet Cup The original trophy was 35cm high and weighed approximately 3.8 kg. The statuette was made of sterling silver and gold plated, with a blue base made of semiprecious stone (lapis lazuli). There was a gold plate on each of the four sides of the base, on which were engraved the name of the trophy as well as the names of the nine winners between 1930 and 1970.
T
wo years before the inaugural FIFA World Cup™ in
1930, the newly drafted regulations stipulated that the winners should be rewarded with a new trophy, with French sculptor Abel Lafleur being assigned this prestigious task. The little trophy had a hazardous existence. The Italian Vice-President of FIFA, Dr.Ottorino Barassi, hid it in a shoe-box under his bed throughout the Second World War and thus saved it from falling into the hands of occupying troops. Then in 1966, the cup disappeared while on display as part of the build-up to the World Cup in England and was only recovered, buried under a tree, by a little dog called Pickles. Finally, in 1983, it was stolen again, this time in Rio de Janeiro, and apparently melted down by the thieves. The Brazilian Football Association, who had earned the right to keep the trophy after having won it three times, ordered a replica to be made.
FIFA President Jules Rimet's dream was realized as Uruguay hosted the inaugural FIFA World Cup in its centenary year. Only four European teams made the long sea journey and the Final was an all-South American affair, with Uruguay beating neighbors Argentina just as they had done in the 1928 Olympic final. Trailing at half-time, the hosts triumphed 4-2 in the newly built Estadio Centenario to become football's first world champions. SoccerDroid eMagazine - November 2012

The current FIFA World Cup Trophy cannot be won outright, as the regulations state that it shall remain FIFA's own possession. The new trophy is 36 cm high, made of solid 18-carat gold and weighs 6175 grams. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite while the bottom side of the Trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup winner since 1974.

A total of 53 designs were submitted to FIFA by experts from seven countries, with the final choice being the work of Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. He described his creation thus: "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. _________ How to Gain Momentum in Youth Soccer Without a Timeout
One of the most beautiful aspects of soccer is that coaches and teams have no ability to call a timeout. As the sport can be heavily dictated by momentum, your players simply will have to stem the tide for the duration of the half before they can rest and re-gather their thoughts. Unlike basketball, in which teams can stop a game for a few minutes when the opposition goes on a 10-0 run, soccer teams have to tough it out. In that time your team may give up several goals that could decide the game. So as a coach, how can you inject a bit of resiliency to your team that will help them overcome the opposition and regain control of the match?
First things first, you need to get your players to calm down and limit mistakes. Costly turnovers and mental errors are just as much the cause of a momentum shift as one team clicking and working well. Therefore, instead of pushing your defenders to simply blast the ball upfield in the hopes of sparking a successful counter-attack, maintain some possession and slow the game down. Slowly move the ball up to the middle of the park and pass it around for several minutes without making any pronounced attacks. This can be extremely beneficial to your team because it will help the players relax and re-gain confidence. Also, it will frustrate the opposition who was desperately trying to snatch the game during their hot spell. Having your team play keep-away is the best way to regain control of a game.
Also, during this spell have your players refrain from rushing into an attack. Attacks generally fail to score a goal roughly 90% of the time, and with your team having been on the back pedal for a while, you don’t want to just give the ball back to the other team. Therefore, keep the ball around the middle of the park until nerves are calmed and your team can begin to think about scoring goals. Soccer is as much about defending as attacking, and do realize that possession is the best defense. How can the other team score when they don’t have the ball? Also, during an opponent’s charge, look for dead ball situations to slow the game down. When your team wins a throw-in, don’t keep up the pace and rush to throw in the ball. Instruct your players to take some time and ease the opponent’s momentum. Sometimes, even have a player grab the ball and hold it just for a teammate to ease on over and take the ball. This is not quite time-wasting tactics. It presents an opportunity for your players to calm down and regroup. Shifts in momentum are what make sports exciting and unpredictable. When momentum is in your favor, the team is clicking and chances seem to come out of thin air, while losing that momentum can result in teams being totally overwhelmed and liable to make costly errors. As a coach, you need to prepare your team to handle both these situations in the best possible way. Try to establish possession in order to sway the game, and make an effort to simply slow the game down so that the opposing momentum doesn’t lose you a game during a rough, five-minute spell.

Carbohydrates for training Carbohydrate provides an important, but relatively short-lived, supply of fuel for exercise, and the storage depots, in the form of glycogen, must be refilled each day from carbohydrate foods in the diet. Everyday eating and drinking plans for athletes need to provide enough carbohydrate to fuel their training programmes and to optimize the recovery of muscle glycogen stores between workouts. General targets can be provided for carbohydrate needs, based on the each individual’s size and the demands of their training programme
Strategies for choosing carbohydrate foods and drinks and for optimising glycogen recovery When the gap between training sessions is less than approximately 8 hours (as when training twice daily), carbohydrate intake should start as soon as practicable after the first session to maximize the effective recovery time. There may be some advantages in meeting carbohydrate targets through a series of snacks during the early recovery phase. Solid and liquid forms of carbohydrate are both suitable for recovery eating, but some choices may be more practical than others because of appetite, convenience or personal preferences.
During longer recovery periods (24 hours), the pattern and timing of carbohydrate-rich meals and snacks do not appear to be critical, and can be organized according to what is practical and comfortable for each athlete. Given the amount of carbohydrate that may need to be consumed, high carbohydrates foods will need to be spread out over the full 24 hours. It is valuable to choose nutrient-rich carbohydrates and to add other foods to recovery meals and snacks to provide a of protein and other nutrients. These nutrients may assist in other recovery processes, and in the case of protein, may promote additional glycogen recovery when carbohydrate intake is below fuel intake targets. Adequate energy intake is also important for optimal glycogen recovery; the restrained eating practices of some athlete, particularly females, make it difficult to meet carbohydrate intake targets and to optimize glycogen storage from this intake. (see Table below). Prepared: IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Commission By: Professor Louise Burke, Australia Professor Ron Maughan, UK
