Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Shea Battie – VIU Mariners

The PACWEST is proud to announce the soccer Athletes of the Week following the opening weekend of play.

Lightning-quick midfielder Shea Battie had a dynamite start to her fifth season as a Mariner. In Saturday’s home opener, Battie scored the first two goals of the game, the first one just 10 minutes into the contest as the Mariners defeated the defending PACWEST champion Capilano Blues 4-2. In Sunday’s rematch, while trailing Capilano 1-0 in the second half, Battie launched a picture-perfect header off a cross from Abby Duncan to tie the game. It was a goal that stood as the eventual game-tying score.

Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Kia Ahmadpour – Capilano Blues

The first-year Blues goalkeeper was crucial for his side in a pair of weekend draws at VIU. Kia Ahmadpour was the busier of the two keepers in both games against the Mariners and was credited with 15 saves, including nine in Sunday’s match. The Blues conceded a goal in the first minute on Sunday, but Ahmadpour closed the door after that, allowing his team to eventually tie the game. Making his debut in Blues colours, Ahmadpour played all 180 minutes to open the PACWEST schedule.

Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Olivia Mazurenko – VIU Mariners

Fourth-year midfielder Olivia Mazurenko was credited as the engine that drove the bus as part of two dominant wins for the Mariners in Week 2 recording three assists in a 3-0 win over the Langara Falcons and 4-0 over the Douglas Royals. One assist set up Courtney Ingram down the wing for the opening goal against Langara, while another was a sublime through-ball past the Royals defense to put PACWEST goal scoring leader Shea Battie into the clear for the 2-0 goal. Head Coach Bobbie Taylor noted that Mazurenko “was truly a game changer both days.”

Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Takumi Ota – Langara Falcons

This past weekend, Takumi Ota scored a key goal against the VIU Mariners that helped his club gain the upper hand with a 2-0 lead. On Sunday against Capilano, he generated enough power and pressure for the Falcons and scored two magical goals, closing out an outstanding three goal weekend.

Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Maya Smith – Capilano Blues

Having not scored a PACWEST goal coming into the 2022 season, Maya Smith exploded for a four-goal weekend including a hat trick Saturday in a 3-2 win over the Douglas Royals. The Port Coquitlam product followed that up with a breathtaking strike late in the second half for the gamewinning goal in Sunday’s 2-1 result over VIU. After missing Week 2 due to injury, Smith came off the bench in both games this past weekend and provided energy and skill for the Blues and helped improve the team’s record to 3-2-1 on the season.

Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Riku Suga – Douglas Royals

On Saturday, the Royals traveled to West Vancouver and came away with a draw versus the Capilano Blues and Riku Suga scored in the first half after his club fell behind early to notch things up at 1-1. Later in the game Suga assisted on the Royals second goal and was a constant threat throughout the match and led the attack while also contributing defensively. Then on Sunday, Suga was instrumental in the Royals 3-2 win over the Falcons as he scored the game winning goal with minutes left as they had to battle from behind all game and even fell to 10 men in the last 15 minutes.
