Canada West News
Northern British Columbia's Michael Henman and British Columbia's Katalin Tolnai were named the Canada West Soccer Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday. Henman accomplished a feat the conference has not seen in at least 16 years, as far back as the record books recall. He started the weekend hungry, heading in a corner kick just minutes into the Timberwolves' first game against Victoria Friday evening. After the Vikes tied it up, Henman wasted no time in striking back, jumping on a pass flicked into the box. The fourth year striker added an insurance marker in the second half to secure his hat trick and lead the Timberwolves to their first win of the season. He wasn't done there. Henman grabbed the spotlight again Sunday in the rematch, as the only player to record a goal on either team. But he didn't just record one. He again notched three goals, becoming the only player in the CW record books (dating to 2006) to post back-to-back hat tricks. The Henman Show ended the weekend with six goals, seven shots and six shots on goal. His two hat tricks are also the first recorded in a single CW season since 2018. Earlier in the week, Tolnai took a tough 1-0 game against the Victoria Vikes and turned it on its head in mere minutes shortly into the second half. Tolnai took a feed from teammate Danielle Steer and buried it with authority, scoring high over the goalkeeper's head, giving her no chance on the play. Five minutes later, Tolnai stole a pass, cut down the middle with four Vikes in pursuit and scored far-side with a perfectly placed kick. Soon after, the third-year midfielder rushed to a lob pass and headed it home to score her third goal in just over seven minutes. Those scores changed the tide of the game as Tolnai led the Thunderbirds to their third straight win of the season. Her feat showed the league her ability as an instant gamechanger. With the impressive hat trick, Tolnai became the 20th player in CW history (dating to 2006) to record three goals within a half.
WEEK 3 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

British Columbia's Katalin Tolnai and Mount Royal's Mohamed El Gandour were named the Canada West Soccer Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday. Tolnai repeats as the Player of the Week after scoring all four goals her Thunderbirds posted as they took down the Alberta Pandas then the defending U SPORTS champions MacEwan Griffins in a couple close matches over the weekend. She began her tear Friday, perfectly placing a long-range free kick over the Pandas defenders and goalkeeper late in the first half. She followed it up with another well-struck kick after turning around her defender and finding the short-hand corner of the net. Her two scores were the sole goals in the game and kept the T-Birds rolling through conference action. Not even the defending national champions had a response for Tolnai, as she posted another two goal night to gift her team a 2-1 victory. Tolnai's second of the evening was a doozy, going bar down on the Griffins' goalkeeper. Meanwhile, El Gandour led an MRU squad that put on a show for Calgary soccer fans over the weekend. In the team's first game against Lethbridge, the fourth-year forward tore toward a pass from the outside and made no mistake as he buried it behind the Pronghorns' goalkeeper. Sixty seconds later, El Gandour struck again, finishing another one-timer to quickly double the Cougars' lead and put the game out of Lethbridge's reach. El Gandour returned Sunday with two beautifully placed free kicks that beat the Saskatchewan goalkeeper by hugging the net posts. The Cougars' captain proved his speed, anticipation and skill as MRU picked up two convincing wins at home.

Mount Royal's Mohamed El Gandour and MacEwan's Grace Mwasalla were named the Canada West Soccer Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday. El Gandour repeats as the Player of the Week after playing a key part in each of the Cougars' three goals that gifted them wins over Pacific Division favourites, UBC and TWU this weekend. The fourth-year forward began his campaign with a highlight reel goal Saturday. He made a swift move past a UBC defender, turned on the jets and blasted one into the far side of the T-Birds' net. His goal stood as the lone mark in the game, giving MRU their fifth win of the season. He followed it up with another game-opening score Sunday against Trinity Western. The Cougars' captain struck a well-placed shot off a pass from teammate Alex Kemsley. El Gandour was hot all weekend, buzzing around the net with six shots on goal. The Spartans, determined to stop him, were given a red card after an El Gandour scoring chance. This let the forward line up a penalty shot, which was saved, but Skylar Rogers buried the rebound. El Gandour's two goals and his assist helped the Cougars to 1-0 and 2-0 victories against tough Pacific Division rivals.
Meanwhile, Grace Mwasalla was having a weekend of her own, opening the Griffins' scoring Saturday when her shot deflected off a defender and passed the keeper. She then fielded a pass, used her body to get it past the defence, and stretched out to strike it home for a skillful goal. Mwasalla's two goals helped the Griffins to a 3-0 victory over the visiting UNBC Timberwolves, simultaneously pushing MacEwan's record above .500 and the T-Wolves' record below the mid mark. The second-year forward followed her two-goal performance up with another show, netting the only goal in a tight affair with the Calgary Dinos Sunday. Mwasalla streaked through the middle, controlling the ball in her few quick strides before finishing inside the right post. With the goal, the Griffins handed the Dinos just their second loss of the year. Mwasalla's three-goal weekend bolstered the defending national champs up to 4-2-0 on the season.
