Formidable Females is a collection that celebrates females of the Rio Grande Valley who left their mark on history.
The items in this collection represent national and local achievements. Anne Armstrong achieved several “firsts” for women, including becoming co-chair of a Republican National Convention, keynote speaker at a Republican National Convention, counselor and Cabinet member under President Nixon, and U. S. Ambassador to Great Britain. In 1987, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Others in the collection include Cleo Dawson Smith, who often appeared on national talk shows to discuss psychology; Emilia Schunior Ramírez, a distinguished educator and author of the lower Rio Grande Valley; and Margaret H. McAllen, a founder of what is now the Museum of South Texas History.
