Preserving Fragile Objects
By Melissa Peña, Collections & Exhibits Coordinator at the Museum of South Texas History
The Museum of South Texas History is home to a vast collection of artifacts such as porcelain, china, glass, silver, and other fragile dishware that require careful storage for long-term preservation.

We begin the process of preserving these items by assigning each piece an identification number. We then analyze each item for details to list on the condition report, such as chips, stains, abrasions, and accretions, to name a few. After the description is complete with all the necessary information, we create a file for each number and update it in our database, CatalogIt. Next, we photograph each fragile object to have a clear visual of the condition of the artifacts at the time of acquisition.

Storing fragile objects can also be done at home. Archival quality storage supplies can be found at art & craft supply stores and online. Look for products labeled acid-free, archival, and specific to storing dishware, such as narrow and compact boxes. Something to consider when storing fragile

items is damage from breakage. With that said, make sure to fill all empty spaces and in between items with acid-free tissue paper to ensure there is no space for items to move around in the box. Do not use materials like bubble wrap or other plastics that can stain and imprint onto fragile objects over time. Keep dishware together by set and label boxes to minimize searching and unwrapping your entire collection. Do not stack boxes as over time the weight of each box can warp other boxes, which can lead to breakage. Also, be sure to store boxes in low areas on a shelf and not on the ground to avoid any accidental damage.
