Preserving Fragile Objects By Melissa Peña, Collections & Exhibits Coordinator at the Museum of South Texas History
The Museum of South Texas History is home to a vast collection of artifacts such as porcelain, china, glass, silver, and other fragile dishware that require careful storage for long-term preservation.
We begin the process of preserving these items by assigning each piece an identification number. We then analyze each item for details to list on the condition report, such as chips, stains, abrasions, and accretions, to name a few. After the description is complete with all the necessary information, we create a file for each number and update it in our database, CatalogIt. Next, we photograph each fragile

object to have a clear visual of the condition of the artifacts at the time of acquisition. Storing fragile objects can also be done at home. Archival quality storage supplies can be found at art & craft supply stores and online.
