CITY OF EDINBURG HOSTS HEARTFELT 9/11 REMEMBRANCE

The City of Edinburg held its 4th Annual 9/11 Patriot Day of Remembrance 5K Memorial Run/Walk on September 7, 2024, bringing together hundreds of runners, walkers, and community members in a powerful tribute to the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. LONE STAR NATIONAL BANK KNOWS

SMALL BUSINESS LOANS

Leading with Heart and Authenticity Natasha Del Barrio:

In the fast-paced world of automotive dealerships, where profit margins and sales quotas often dominate, Bert Ogden Auto Group offers a refreshingly different model. As a young, large automotive company, Bert Ogden isn't just another dealership group. It's a family-owned business deeply rooted in its commitment to the community, employees, and customers. With 24 stores and over 1,200 employees, Bert Ogden stands out by refusing to let its growth overshadow its familial atmosphere.

At the heart of this approach today is Natasha Del Barrio, a dynamic CEO who embodies the values instilled by her predecessors, Robert C. Vackar and Janet Ogden Vackar. Described by those who know her as warm and welcoming, Natasha is committed to a leadership style that prioritizes authenticity, kindness, and respect. Her approach is holistic, recognizing the importance of each employee's role and making sure no one feels like a mere number. For Natasha, success isn't solely measured by profit but by the collective success and happiness of the entire Bert Ogden family.

Founded by Janet's father, Bert Ogden, the dealership is deeply embedded in the community. "Bob and Janet captured the heart of the community because they genuinely care," Natasha shares. "They've created a culture that's as much about community involvement as it is about selling cars." This legacy of community love and commitment guides the organization's long-term vision with Natasha at the helm, looking 30 to 35 years down the road to ensure stability and growth for future generations.

The Road to the C-Suite

Natasha’s career with the auto group began when she was just a high school junior working part-time as the assistant to the marketing director. She then earned her BBA in marketing and MBA from UTRGV Legacy Institute, UT Pan American. She went on to work for Citi Group and JP Morgan Chase as a Dealer Development Manager and Assistant Vice President, managing business portfolios for 140 automotive dealers across Texas. Returning to Bert Ogden in 2012 as the Corporate Strategist, she was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2017.

Embracing Authentic Leadership

For Natasha, being a leader means embracing her natural qualities. "Women often feel the need to overcompensate, to project a masculine style of leadership," she notes. However, she believes the true strength of her leadership lies in her authenticity. "Be your most authentic self," she advises, emphasizing qualities like empathy, nurturing, and care as the cornerstones of effective leadership. Her focus on authenticity is intertwined with her strong sense of faith, which she describes as her "God-given talent to help others."

Her leadership style also reflects her mentors' influence, particularly Bob and Janet Vackar. Known for their genuine care for the community and employees, Bob and Janet set the foundation for Bert Ogden's family-oriented culture. Bob's analytical approach as a CPA and Janet's warmth has shaped the organization's unique blend of professionalism and personal connection.

Natasha often asks herself, "What would Bob do?" as she navigates challenges, staying true to the principles they taught her.

Natasha believes that creating a supportive environment where team members can manage themselves is essential. Her open-mindedness and ethical approach allow for new ideas to flow, which fosters innovation and growth within the business. Her motto, "Do the right thing, every time, all the time," echoes throughout the company, reminding each employee of their moral responsibility to one another and to their clients.

Creating a Lasting Legacy

Natasha and her team aren't just focused on the present; they are thinking 30 to 35 years into the future. Weekly discussions are held about how to ensure the company's longevity and relevance for the next generation. This vision extends to succession planning and preparing future leaders, ensuring that the Bert Ogden legacy remains strong and true to its roots.

For Natasha, the most rewarding aspect of her role is seeing the entire Bert Ogden team come together, united in their shared mission. "Every employee has a moral responsibility with each other and with our clients," she states, underscoring the importance of integrity and trust within the organization.

When asked about her goals, Natasha emphasizes her desire to leave a meaningful impact. "Show up for other people, and everything will work out," she advises. Her dedication to helping team members overcome challenges, offering them advice, or simply listening exemplifies her approach to leadership. "Do you want me to listen, get involved, or give advice?" she often asks. The response, she

says, is usually just to listen.

Her greatest legacy, though, is with her three beautiful children, Ethan, Connor, and Cora.

Expanding Horizons with New Facilities

As part of Bert Ogden Auto Group's growth strategy, Natasha has spearheaded the development of several cutting-edge facilities, each designed with a unique flair and purpose. The new Chrysler, Dodge, Ram + Jeep dealership in Harlingen, a 40,000-square-foot, high-tech marvel, stands out with its efficient customer flow and impressive, large U.S. flag. The Bert Ogden Auto Group proudly displays the largest U.S. flags in the Rio Grande Valley at their facilities.

Then there's the Genesis dealership, a standalone space designed to provide Genesis customers with a premium experience, complete with floating glass walls and water features. This modern facility is a testament to Bert Ogden's commitment to offering customers a world-class experience.

The recent addition of a Mercedes-Benz dealership is particularly close to her heart, as it fills a gap in Bert Ogden's luxury lineup. Inspired by Art Deco architecture, this facility resembles a modern car museum and offers customers a one-of-a-kind experience in the Valley.

Finally, the new BMW dealership in Pharr draws inspiration from the architectural elegance of Manhattan boutiques. With three stories of glass, the design allows customers to see the service area, reflecting transparency and openness. When asked about future projects, Natasha could not comment specifically but promised the Rio Grande Valley would see new and unique dealerships coming to our market in the next few years.

I love attending social events with a food buffet. However, I never know the etiquette rules for getting food from the buffet bar. What do I need to know?

Buffets are very common at social events your food from the buffet table to your plate others to start before you get your food must feed everyone at the party so don’t overload your plate

I have been so fortunate to attend many social events this season, and I know it is polite to send a thank you card afterward. However, I am always stuck with what to write. Do you have any advice?

Just do it! The sooner, the better Write the thank you note as if you were speaking with the person you are thanking Keep it short and sweet, but personalize the note by referring to the event you attended Finally, always remember that a thank you note is an extra way of telling the person you truly value what has been done for you

I was recently invited to a friend’s home for a big community event. I noticed that some of the guests arrived with a hostess gift. The event was to promote local nonprofits, so I was unsure if a hostess gift was necessary. When should I bring a hostess gift?

A hostess gift is a lovely way to thank them for their hospitality It does not have to be elaborate or expensive, but it should always be given when you are invited to someone’s home for an event Wine, flowers, specialty food items, and small items for the house all make good hostess gifts .

The Rio Grande Valley Leadership Class recently embarked on its inaugural session with a dynamic day of learning and exploration that spotlighted key locations in the McAllen area. Participants started their journey at Quinta Mazatlán, a renowned urban sanctuary dedicated to environmental education and sustainability. Here, they gained insight into the region's rich natural heritage and learned about the site's role in connecting the community to South Texas’ unique environment and wildlife.

The session continued with a focus on aviation and the transformative impact of the McAllen International Airport. Jeremy Santoscoy, Director of Aviation at McAllen International Airport, provided valuable insights into aviation’s role in regional connectivity, showcasing how the airport enhances business and tourism throughout the RGV. The airport’s operations and future expansion plans highlighted its importance as a major gateway to the South Texas region and beyond.

Next, the class visited Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages’ manufacturing and distribution plant in McAllen, where they were welcomed by Rodrigo Gomez, Director of Sales & Operations, South Area, and an active member of the RGV Partnership. The group gained a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Coca-Cola’s bottling process, from production and quality control to distribution logistics, and saw firsthand the intricate operations required to keep one of the world’s most recognized beverages flowing from factory to table across South Texas.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors, whose generosity and support made this first session a success. Your contributions are invaluable in helping our leaders grow and better serve the Rio Grande Valley community. Thank you for partnering with us to make this experience possible!

MISSION UNITES FOR 9/11 MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

On September 11, 2024, the City of Mission partnered with Mission Regional Medical Center to host a 9/11 Memorial Tribute. The event was a powerful demonstration of the community’s unity, as attendees came together to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to recognize the bravery of first responders who stepped up in the face of tragedy.

The ceremony featured speeches and moments of silence, allowing participants to reflect on the profound impact of this day. The presence of so many community members, city officials, first responders, and students shows that, even after all these years, we will never forget about the thousands of lives tragically lost. Each element of the tribute served as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring spirit that has carried the nation forward.

15TH ANNUAL MISSION PINK 5K

Mission Regional Medical Center proudly hosted the 15th Annual Mission Pink 5K on October 12th, 2024, celebrating with a true Quinceañera of hope and resilience. This year was a record-breaking event, with over 2,000 participants, including runners, walkers, survivors, and families, united across the Rio Grande Valley to support a vital cause: providing free mammogram screenings for underserved women. With generous sponsorship from HEB, Walmart, and the City of Mission, our community demonstrated an unwavering commitment to raising awareness about breast cancer, which affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. Together, we continue to champion life-saving screenings, education, and wellness, ensuring no woman fights alone.

¡FANDANGO! TRIUMPHS OVER STORMY SKIES

On Saturday, Oct.5, the dark clouds gathered. Rain poured from the sky not once, not twice, but three times during the day. By the late afternoon, the rain finally stopped, and ¡Fandango! Homegrown in the RGV was on. The rain did not dampen the spirits of the fandangueros who gathered at the Museum of South Texas History to enjoy a festive evening of auction fun, drawings for great prizes, good food, and generous friends…all to support the preservation services and innovative programming of MOSTHistory, a museum homegrown in the RGV.

Thank you to all the auction donors, table hosts, bidders, committee members, and vendors who contributed to making ¡Fandango! a memorable and financially successful event!

DID YOU KNOW

that Falcon Dam was made with ancient technology developed 2,200 years ago in the Roman Empire?

Over two thousand years ago, Roman engineers at a Greek colony near modern Naples in Italy discovered that using a mixture of lime and volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius yielded a uniquely strong building material. This mixture of volcanic ash, also known as pozzolan, with lime and water became known as Roman Concrete or hydraulic cement and was particularly useful in building harbors and other underwater structures but also was used to build the Colosseum in Rome as well as many Roman buildings and aqueducts that still stand today.

Though the original recipe was lost in time, modern engineers knew enough that when they came to build Falcon Dam in the 1950s, they used 22 million pounds of volcanic ash from a quarry known as La Puerta in Starr County just east of Rio Grande City and mixed it with Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water to replicate the Roman technique and that went into pouring the dam.

A Climate-Changing Event 27.4-million-years ago in the Rio Grande Valley

Twenty-seven million years ago, twenty meters of volcanic ash from a violent eruption of a distant caldera buried the south Texas coastal forest of the Oligocene Epoch, some 60 miles inland from the present Gulf coast in Starr County. Outcrops of volcanic ash can be traced over 200 miles from northern Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. This deposit is a unique discovery researched by Dr. Juan González, UTRGV professor of Geology for the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences and Co-Director of the CHAPS Program. His work has revealed a unique aspect of the geological story of the Rio Grande Valley since he first came upon this outcrop of volcanic ash in 2011.

The volcanic ash used as pozzolan for Falcon Dam comes from this 20-meter-thick deposit of ash known in the geologic literature as the “Catahoula Volcanic Ash.” The ash can

be easily seen along Starr County’s main road, US Highway 83/Interstate 2. Once the violent eruption of a caldera injected a large volume of ash into the atmosphere, the ash was transported eastward by the prevailing winds, and eventually, it rained on the earth’s surface. The thick blanket of ash altered the landscape permanently, burying all the vegetation and geographical features in a short period of time, perhaps only a few days to just a few weeks. The exact location of the caldera that produced the ash remains unknown, but it likely had a western source in one of many active volcanic centers in the Sierra Madre Occidental, about 500 kilometers southwest in Mexico. This speculation is supported by the chemical affinity of the ash and its age of 27.4 million years.

The large volume of ash that the eruption poured into the atmosphere was undoubtedly an event of catastrophic proportions and wreaked devastating consequences for the region’s climate, ecology, and environment. Millions of years later, it is possible to observe evidence of the ancient landscape in the occasional fossil impressions of plants, also called “casts.” Large amounts of petrified wood formed as the result of the burial of the maritime forest by the volcanic ash. Through the process of silicification, the substitution of silica from ash dissolved in groundwater for the trees’ original cellulose over the course of millions of years.

It is possible to observe thick outcrops of the Catahoula volcanic ash, it’s almost pure white color, standing out on US Highway 83 in Rio Grande City and the municipality of Escobares.

This aspect of Rio Grande Valley’s geoheritage is highlighted on the CHAPS Program’s Ancient Landscapes of South Texas trail. For more information, go to www.utrgv.edu/ancient-landscapes-southtexas or scan the QR codes below.

Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP) is a FREE 12-step program that has been in existence since 1988 in Hidalgo County and provides support and recovery services for youth, adults, and their families affected by substance abuse.

Today’s youth are experiencing increased exposure to alcohol and drugs while having limited opportunities for drug-free social interactions. PDAP’s youth group program provides a safe, supportive, inclusive environment where teenagers can connect, share their struggles, and participate in 12-step recovery programs. With the guidance of licensed substance abuse counselors, they receive the support they need to overcome substance abuse. PDAP encourages youth to stop by during their downtime, offering activities like games, arts and crafts, basketball, or simply hanging out. Most importantly, PDAP provides a supportive, sober space for meaningful, nonthreatening social interactions.

In addition to offering individual and group counseling services, PDAP is dedicated to community engagement, regularly participating in outreach and educational events to raise awareness about substance abuse. These efforts help to educate our community, prevent substance use and abuse, and connect individuals and families to important resources.

AUTUMN ITCH: MANAGING YOUR PUP’S SEASONAL ALLERGIES

It is finally autumn, and with that comes allergy season for dogs in Texas. As the seasons change, many dogs experience uncomfortable allergy symptoms that can leave them itching, scratching, and suffering. These allergies can be triggered by various allergens found in plants, insects, foods, and medicines. However, seasonal allergies are often linked to environmental elements like plant pollens or mold spores, especially during spring or autumn. Our friends at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine have some great information regarding allergies your dog could experience and how to alleviate any allergy-related issues your dog may have, so read on to learn more about how to recognize allergy symptoms, tips for managing seasonal allergies, and treatment options.

Recognizing the Symptoms Seasonal allergies in dogs can manifest in several ways, including:

• Red, inflamed skin

• Hotspots

• Itching and scratching at the skin, ears, or underarms

• Chewing on paw pads

• Nose rubbing on the ground

• Frequent ear infections

• Licking or scooting their anal glands

• Sneezing

These symptoms tend to occur at specific times of the year and may coincide with blooming plants or decomposing leaves.

Tips to Manage Seasonal Allergies There are several steps you can take to reduce your dog’s exposure to allergens:

• Wipe your dog’s paws and underside after outdoor activities to remove pollen and mold spores.

• Use air conditioning and recirculation settings to minimize outdoor allergens indoors.

• Employ dehumidifiers in areas prone to mold and air purifiers in the home.

• Keep dogs current on flea/tick preventatives, as some dogs are allergic to flea bites.

• Regularly clean dog bedding in hot water and maintain a short lawn to reduce allergen exposure. Treatment Options

• Prescription Medications: Many options, from tablets to shampoos, can help relieve allergy symptoms, often in consultation with a veterinarian.

• Over-the-counter medications: Always consult your vet before giving your dog any medication to ensure proper dosing.

• Immunotherapy: This method uses injections to help build your dog’s tolerance to specific allergens over time, providing longer-term relief.

Proper care and attention can help your dog enjoy a more comfortable allergy season. Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for dogs, but with proper care, management, and treatment options, you can help alleviate their symptoms. You can help your dog enjoy a more comfortable and healthier allergy season by reducing allergen exposure and consulting your vet for the right treatments.
