Non-Profit Spotlight: Valley Scholars Program

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

The Valley Scholars Program

The Valley Scholars Program was established in 1997 through a partnership between South Texas College, members of the local community, and representatives from business and industry. Its mission is to recognize and promote academic excellence by providing financial assistance and leadership development opportunities to academically gifted and highly motivated students.

The program recruits students from high schools within Hidalgo and Starr counties who graduate within the top 10% of their class or obtain an average of 80 or above. Program participants are supported throughout their studies with scholarship funding, specialized advisement, and community service opportunities as they work toward the completion of an associate degree. More than 1,020 students have participated in the program and continued their education at premier universities around the state and nation.

“The Valley Scholars Program provided me with essential support to achieve my goal of earning a degree in medicine. It provided a mentor support system during times when I faced academic and financial obstacles.” - Dr. Belinda Hernandez.
