PROVIDING HEALING & HOPE FOR KIDS SINCE 2006

For More Than 17 years, Valley Residents Have Counted on South Texas Health System® Children’s for a Wide Range of Pediatric Services

Since opening its doors in March 2006, South Texas Health System Children’s has been providing families in the Rio Grande Valley with highquality, close-to-home pediatric care in a colorful, kid-friendly setting that helps put young patients (and their families) at ease.

The 107-bed facility is staffed by nurses, therapists, and clinicians who are specially trained in caring for children, as well as highly skilled physicians with the expertise needed to treat a wide range of conditions.

Emergency Care Just for Kids

South Texas Health System Children’s is especially proud to have been the first pediatric facility in the area with a dedicated pediatric emergency department.

Today, their emergency department provides roundthe-clock care for conditions and injuries, including the following:

• Appendicitis

• Asthma and difficulty breathing

• Complications from chronic or congenital illnesses

• Cuts, burns, or broken bones

• Head injuries

• High and persistent fevers

• Severe infections or allergic reactions

The pediatric emergency physicians and nurses there are skilled at helping to calm young patients’ fears so they can be more receptive to procedures and treatment.

Asthma Center of Excellence

Another thing that sets the facility apart is its Asthma Program. It holds certification from The Joint Commission and is one of the few pediatric asthma programs in the nation recognized as a Center of Excellence. In fact, it was the first in Texas and second in the nation to be designated as such.

Children there receive personal, individualized care from physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists, specially trained to help them manage their asthma and breathe easier. The program also offers education and support to help kids, and their parents understand the condition, learn how to live as symptom-free as possible, and prevent future asthma attacks.

Comprehensive Pediatric Services

In addition to providing just-for-kids emergency care and being an Asthma Center of Excellence, South Texas Health System Children’s provides a wide range of specialty pediatric services, including:

• Gastroenterology

• Orthopedics/Sports Medicine

• Scoliosis/Spine

• Neurology

• Infectious Disease

• General Surgery

• Cardiology

• Ear, Nose & Throat

• Anesthesia

• Pulmonology

• And many more

A Setting and Services Designed Especially for Kids

Being in the hospital can be stressful and difficult for children and their families. South Texas Health System Children’s features a kidfriendly, comfortable atmosphere, with large pediatric playrooms, an outdoor Children’s healing garden, and a virtual playroom that allows pediatric patients to take part in arts & crafts activities from the comfort of their hospital room.

Child Life specialists at the facility help patients and their families deal with the stress and anxiety they may feel, working with children to reassure them and make sure they understand treatments and procedures.

When needed, the Ronald McDonald Family Room® provides a special place where parents and families can take a break. Operated

in collaboration with the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Rio Grande Valley, the Ronald McDonald Family Room has three overnight sleeping rooms, a living room, a kitchen, and laundry, as well as bathroom and shower facilities.

It’s all part of South Texas Health System Children’s commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care for the children of the Valley at a facility that has become a beloved part of the community.

If your child is ill or injured, South Texas Health System Children’s is there. Since 2006, they have earned the confidence of our community by demonstrating, every day, that your child’s health is their purpose.
