PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Summer is upon us and the Hamptons is in unique form. A Hamptons summer without most events or social functions has an unusual feel — more calm and peaceful. Reminds me of how it was in the 1980s before smart phones took over our lives. As most of us have more time, enjoying the simple things in life seems to be the theme for this summer. The Hamptons offers many ways to enjoy the natural world as well as the distinct personalities of the towns and villages throughout the area. One of my favorites is to explore. It’s always fun to be a little adventurous and try new things, or discover new places. There are many hidden gems and secret treasures waiting for you. Although most large events, including charity events, have been canceled this summer, some fundraising galas will be held online. Other non-profits will be reaching out for donations and some will have matching-donation programs. The non-profits and charity causes need your support more than ever, and you can easily donate via their websites. Please consider contributing to the Southampton Hospital. Its services are vital to the Hamptons, for residents and visitors alike. Support is especially critical now because the hospital’s resources have been pushed to the maximum during these past few months. You can learn more about the hospital’s many programs and services and donate via southampton.stonybrookmedicine.edu/giving. Now that the Hamptons stores and restaurants are opening again, please remember small businesses are relying on your help this summer because of the pandemic shut-down. Many local businesses will continue to have restrictions throughout the summer. Instead of buying online, please support the Hamptons community by shopping locally in the small businesses and village shops. Summer in the Hamptons is a gift. Enjoy every moment!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
July is a magical time in the Hamptons. We’ve all hit our summer stride — tans are deep and our routines are set. Many I’ve spoken to have developed new talents during these unprecedented times. Some have explored cooking, others gardening, and I’ve even heard of someone who is now making furniture! Recently, I have noticed a common fire within us all, igniting a desire to become socially active and learn more about American history. Passions for politics as well as environmental activism are like never before. I know these times have felt awful and frightening for many, but there is a new consciousness growing that is important and inclusive. I hope in your daily lives you explore how you can be a part of the history that’s currently in the making. There are so many ways to contribute, from financially supporting organizations to volunteering. And never discount the simplest of contributions — your voice. Have those hard conversations about your views with those who have completely opposite views. Trust me, you can make a difference! Enjoy the rest of July and be safe. With love,
Devorah Rose

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR
It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-summer in the Hamptons, and thankfully we have now entered Phase 4 on the East End. As you may know, restrictions are still in place requiring local business owners to continue operating under limited capacity and to adhere to social distancing guidelines. We are incredibly dedicated to our loyal readers and equally grateful for the substantial ongoing support we receive from our clients during this unprecedented time. Although this magazine thoroughly enjoys hosting our much anticipated indoor and outdoor seasonal events, to be on the safe side, we have decided to temporarily postpone large gatherings. None the less, we are looking forward to celebrating our annual Polo Hamptons event at a later date in August in a more intimate way, so please stay tuned! In the historic villages on the East End, savvy business owners have created safe accommodations utilizing a tremendous amount of sidewalk space especially for dining outdoors at 5 star farm-to-table restaurants. Aside from eating out, there are endless activities available in the Hamptons which will keep you busy amidst pandemic guidelines. From baking in the sand on scenic Coopers Beach in Southampton, to sailing, kayaking, and paddle boarding in the enchanting village of Sag Harbor, or surfing, fishing, and boating in the Atlantic Ocean off Montauk, whatever activities you choose to engage in this summer, it is certain the experience will remain enjoyable and memorable. And really, what could possibly be a better summer vacation destination than the cluster of charming villages surrounded by a pristine landscape on Long Island’s South Fork known as the legendary Hamptons? Stay safe and enjoy your summer!

eau-Rivage in Geneva, Switzerland, is the hotel pearl of the city. The hotel, perfectly situated on Lake Geneva, is the kind of unique luxury that feels like home. Each suite and room is gorgeous and offers contemporary amenities and modern-day technology. The royal rooms feel lavish yet welcoming, and offer beautiful views over the lake. Family-owned since 1865, the Beau-Rivage has a particular attention to detail that will amaze you. Each of the Belle Époquestyled suites are individually designed in luxurious fabrics and rich colors. Each suite has contemporary luxuries like TVs hidden in mirrors and a personal steam room in the bathroom. The attention to detail and elegance continue in the one-Michelin-star restaurant Le Chat Botté. Spend an evening in quiet elegance in this classic French restaurant, enjoying a memorable meal that is beautifully presented. Under the executive
chef Dominique Gauthier, Le Chat Botté is one of Geneva’s standout restaurants. The hotel is dripping in rich history. The property is where Eleanor Roosevelt worked on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Countless royals and celebrities have also called the Beau-Rivage home. One famous guest was Empress Elizabeth of Austria, a fabulous 19th-century royal who famously died in the hotel after being stabbed by an anarchist in 1898. A statue devoted to her stands in front of the hotel. The hotel has perfect views of the two biggest sites in Geneva: Mont-Blanc to the south, and the Jet d’Eau fountain in Lake Geneva, which soars over 460 feet. Head to beau-rivage.ch/en/ to check out more. You shouldn’t miss this stunning hotel that has been passionately preserved from generation to generation for over 150 years. Social Life

THE MALE BAG By Anthony Michael
Raining on Pride There sure isn’t a lot to celebrate this summer — except Pride! Typically, parades and festivals occur in June during Pride Month, but since social distancing has made those all but impossible, it seems observation of Pride has simply extended to the entire summer. Maybe beyond. And that’s ok, especially when designers get into the mix. We chose a couple of our favorite Pride-inspired togs whose sales will give non-profits a boost this year. And that’s a good thing, too.
Tom Snyder tomsnyder.com A Social Life favorite, Tom Snyder has gone all in with its Art of Pride Collection. Nine leading LGBTQ artists were tapped to create original works of art to appear on tees and sweatshirts ($98+), and 25% of sales will be donated to LGBTQ organizations. Get one of each! And, while you’re at it, pick up an exclusive Tom Snyder X Timex Pride watch ($199). “I had been doing research in the Timex archive and when I saw this watch from the Seventies with the multi-colored disks, I wanted to refresh it and make it a celebration of Pride,” writes Snyder. “Pride is obviously about love and inclusiveness, and the different colors of the watch embody that.”

Ron Dorff always screams sexy, so how is the brand turning up the volume this summer? A collaboration with openly gay freestyle skier and Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy for the WORTHY T-Shirt ($75), in a limited edition of 300. Proceeds will go to the Los Angeles LGBT Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation. While you’re poking around the site, consider the iconic Ron Dorff exerciser shorts ($110) inspired by the rugby shorts of the early ’70s.
You were wondering where the rain was coming into the narrative, right? Well, I’ve naturally been trying every high-end hand sanitizer out there. My new favorite? D.S. & Durga’s Big Sur After Rain ($30). I have been to Big Sur after rain, and I don’t recall the specific fragrance, but this will do. Eucalyptus, magnolia, Pacific spray, wet wood . . . and, of course, alcohol. You know the women from Big Little Lies are soaking in it. Social Life

THE BITTERSWEET TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR By Kristy Rao
A
diet high in sugar can weaken your immune system and increase your risk for obesity and chronic diseases such hypertension and diabetes, each associated with a higher incidence of Covid-19 hospitalization. Sugar is destructive to our health in so many ways. Yet our country remains the largest consumer of sweeteners and also one of the largest global sugar importers. Colonists consumed a yearly average of 4 pounds of sugar. Today, a typical American consumes 150 pounds a year. The USDA recommends no more than 10 teaspoons of sugar a day. Most of us consume 30 teaspoons a day. Sadly, we eat a yearly average of only 8 pounds of broccoli. Even before refined sugar existed, humans sought out sweet foods. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate found in many healthy foods such as beans, vegetables, and fruit. In the presence of fiber, sugar molecules enter the bloodstream slowly. However, refined sugar is a different story. It is nutrient-deficient and not easy to digest. In fact, our bodies have to use stored minerals and enzymes to absorb it properly. Sugar intake can actually create nutritional deficiencies and increase our blood sugar to a level that results in nervous tension and hyperactivity, eventually leaving us fatigued and even depressed. Sugar can be as addictive as certain drugs. Eating even a small amount leaves us desiring more. Also, suddenly quitting can cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches, mood swings, fatigue, and other cravings. Sugar hides in a lot of foods, such as canned vegetables, baby food, vitamins, peanut butter, bread, and tomato sauce. You could be getting plenty even after cutting out desserts and candy. Even presumably healthy and organic foods can contain a ton of it. In fact, as I was helping revamp a client’s kitchen one day, I found a granola bar that contained more sugar than a donut. So what can you do? Be mindful. A 16-ounce frappuccino is basically like having 3 donuts. Be mindful of these deceptive products that pack in refined sugar. Start looking at labels. Corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, glucose, and fructose are sugars.
Kristy Rao, Photo by Frank Rocco
Eat balanced meals and don’t skip meals. Include a mix of healthy fats, carbs, and protein at each meal. Balanced meals are more satiating, keeping you fuller and more energized for longer. They also balance your blood sugar levels to prevent cravings after dinner. Also, get enough sleep! When we are run down or very hungry, our bodies crave quick sources of energy like refined sugar. And finally, avoid packaged foods. They are high in hidden sugars, preservatives, and trans fats, which only drive sugar cravings! And remember that our cravings also stem from our emotions. This is a stressful time for most of us. Since we associate sweet treats with joy, we often think they will make us feel better when we are sad, anxious, or angry. In reality, though, they just make us feel worse. Instead, opt for a piece of 70% dark chocolate, a cup of herbal tea, or even try meditating, taking a calming bath, or calling up a good friend. The changes you make, however small, will become habits over time. You can banish those sugar cravings and take control. Along with consuming more nutrient-dense whole foods, minimizing added sugars can keep your immune system more resilient. Kristy Rao kristyraohealth.com Social Life

AT THE TABLE FOR A NICE SUMMER FAMILY DINNER By Liana Werner-Gray
It’s a different type of summer this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a delicious and fun family dinner. I’m so excited to share this recipe for your family to enjoy making together. Kids love helping make this satay sauce with these different ingredients. I use organic chicken, but you can also make satay grass-fed beef strips, fish, or shrimp. The key here is the satay sauce. It’s ridiculously and divinely delicious. My friends call it “crack sauce” because it’s addictive. But it’s also made with only wholesome, anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is a great opportunity to bring back some old family traditions like cooking together and enjoying each other during some relaxing and delicious table time.
Instead of using peanut butter, to keep it nut free and create an amazing satay flavor, I use SunButter, which is an organic, non-gmo, roasted sunflower seed butter. I serve my satay over a rice substitute, red lentil risoni by Explore Cuisine. It’s completely grain free, plus lower in carbs and higher in protein than rice. For juiciness and a buttery satay flavor I use Nutiva’s organic coconut oil with butter flavor. Finished with some fresh lime and cilantro, it’s the ideal summer dinner! Save some leftovers for the next day too. Food is a teacher: it can be a powerful medicine or poison. This is the type of meal that will leave you feeling satisfied and will nourish your brain for days. Social Life

Peppers are easy to grow simply by scraping the seeds of a fresh pepper into a hole a half-inch deep. Peppers take a bit longer to grow, but yields a colorful harvest. Strawberry seeds from the outside of the berry can be removed with a toothpick and planted directly into soil. You will grow beautiful plants with sweet berries. Microgreens grow from bought seeds and take from three to five weeks to be tall enough to harvest. They are filled with concentrated nutrients that can top off a salad or be the greens for your smoothie. Some, like arugula, have a strong taste and a small portion goes a long way. Baby lettuce also grows from bought seeds that yield sweet crisp lettuce. Lettuce prefers cooler weather, but can be managed throughout the summer.
K
eeping healthy is a lifestyle. Try gardening in pots to grow organic delicious fruit and vegetables even in the smallest places. To be healthy, we should eat the colors of the rainbow, which produce an enchanted and nutritious garden, to feed our bodies and for our visual pleasure. This year I tested some garden hacks for planting and used seeds I had in the house or had ordered online. My entire garden is organic and has never been fed chemicals. Celery is easy to grow from a store-bought bunch. Cut about 2 inches from the bottom, balance the stump with four toothpicks, place in one inch of water, and place in a sunny spot. When lush green stalks begin to grow from the center, transfer to dirt. Starting in water is a common recommendation, but I experimented by placing my celery stump directly into dirt. It worked!
These simple food hacks can be started in your home and even work in the winter with the correct lighting. It is joyful to watch the bright green celery stalks growing against the purple lettuces and microgreens. As the rainbow appears, it’s just like having flowering plants, which I chose to leave out this year. All this planting took me about a half hour. I will replenish the celery, microgreens, and lettuces, but the other plants will continue to yield fruit and vegetables all summer. Growing whole foods will help us with our wellness goals. Food isn’t about deprivation but about keeping a healthy lifestyle. Gorgeous hair makes one feel alive and sexy. It is the thing most desired by individuals experiencing hair issues. Angelo David Salon strives to make each client look stunning and feel worthy of poetic sentiments. The salon’s creative director and owner, Angelo David Pisacreta, wants to bestow each client with his gift of beauty confidence. His Midtown Manhattan salon is one of the best in the industry and a destination for boosting your self-assurance. Clients around the world have experienced the wonder of his work, including even those who suffer from alopecia or hereditary hair loss. Addressing underlying issues is just the beginning of Angelo’s skill set as a master stylist. Reflecting on the passion that drives him, he explains, “I’m a veteran in the industry, with prestigious clientele and a salon on Madison Avenue. I’ve become an expert in hair care because I live and breathe it every day. I am always looking for new ideas and I love being a pioneer in what I do.” Angelo is also the incredible inventor of his popular line of couture hair. This luxury hair can command as much as $3,000 to $10,000. “Faux hair has now become part of our culture; it’s no longer taboo to talk about it.” Hairpieces may be prevalent in salons, but according to Angelo, “You must know how to do it right and go all in.”

ROCHELLE & JUNE JACOBS SKIN CARE MAVENS By Bennett Marcus
I
n 2003, the skincare entrepreneur June Jacobs started her eponymous business while opening her own laboratory to manufacture the company’s products. Her daughter, Rochelle Jacobs, wanted in, and even prepared a PowerPoint presentation to persuade her mother to bring her on her team, which was met with a resounding no. However, June’s business partner saw potential in Rochelle, and the mother-daughter team have been partners since 1999. MOTHER-DAUGHTER BUSINESS Both mother and daughter are committed to combining cutting-edge science with botanical remedies. “I decided with the June Jacobs line to make it natural, to have no paraffins, no preservatives, no sulfates, no dyes, and to make sure the scent was with an aromatic and not with a fragrance,” June explains. Coming from a large family whose ancestral home was in the Mediterranean, June went back to her roots in developing her skincare line. “I remember visiting them and seeing all these gorgeous Middle Eastern women putting this stuff on their faces, and my mother said, ‘That’s why they look beautiful, that’s why they look young.’ ” June Jacobs followed that tradition in creating her line. “It’s very clean, very simple, it just has the best, highest percentage of those antioxidants that really work.” THEIR PRIVATE LABORATORY “In order to successfully bring products to fruition quickly, you really need to have research and development people,” June says. Most companies depend on outside labs, and a product can take a year or more to come to market. When June gets an idea, she simply calls her chemist, and within 60 days or so, it is up and running. “I’m never put in the back of the line; I never have inventory issues.” NATURALLY SERIOUS In August 2018, June and Rochelle introduced their new line of cleanly made, ethically developed and clinically tested skincare: Naturally Serious. Launched exclusively at Sephora stores and Sephora online, Naturally Serious combines naturally derived powerhouse ingredients with serious, cutting-edge technology. naturallyseriousskin.com
Rochelle and June Jacobs
PRESTIGE COSMETICS They do make some private label items for prestige cosmetics companies, but the lab is mostly devoted to the June Jacobs brand as well as the Peter Thomas Roth skincare line, in which she is also a partner. The company uses a proprietary blend of goji berry, green tea, pomegranate, grape seed, and African black tea in every product, and just last year they were granted a 20-year patent on this formula, a rarity. HOTELS & SEPHORA CHINA Along the way, Rochelle spearheaded projects that led to the company’s growth, such as entering the competitive spa industry. In 2015, June Jacobs cosmetics launched in Sephora stores across China. Rochelle had to build teams there to make sure it all rolled out smoothly and learn what Chinese consumers want. She says, “Having 200 doors in one country is definitely a different business model.” She also oversaw a rebranding of the full product line, organizing products into eleven collections based on their benefits, such as hydrating or anti-aging, and updating the packaging. June Jacobs drives the innovation, and Rochelle Jacobs takes over from there. “Once we have a product, I am then, of course, the guinea pig. I make sure everything feels good and does what it’s supposed to do.” junejacobs.com Social Life

Pittsburg born and raised, girl-next-door Beth Stern is not your average celebrity wife. Knowing that she is married to Howard Stern, the king of all media, you might be surprised to learn that Beth is a sensitive and down-to-earth woman. She loves animals and nature so deeply that she has built her life around both. And what a life it is. She and Howard and their many felines live in a warm and happy Southampton home perched beyond the dunes on one of the famous beaches that the Hamptons are known for. Her spirit is connected to the Hamptons in the most magical way — through her affinity for its endangered wildlife and its fragile environment. Don’t be surprised if you see the glowing beauty picking up rubbish on the beach to help protect the animals from harm. With an infinite love for her husband, an unwavering dedication to her pets, and a commitment to saving wildlife, it’s no wonder that Beth’s inner lovliness radiates as brightly as her obvious external beauty. Social Life sat down with Beth to learn more about what drives and moves her.
As a passionate animal-rights activist, what projects are you involved in right now? I am so proud to say that the project I’ve been working on for the last five years is up and running! North Shore Animal League America’s Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center was a vision of mine that has come to life. The center is a cage-free homeaway-from-home environment for felines while they wait for their forever homes. It broke my heart to see cats in cages. Cats at NSALA are now able to spend their days in spacious rooms until they are adopted. They are all so happy and thriving in this new space. We named it after our bulldog, Bianca, who loved our resident cats. Is there a particular cause that is very close to your heart? Yes, absolutely! Howard and I have six resident cats and, at the moment, I am fostering a senior cat whose owner passed away, a mama kitty and her five nursing babies, and six orphaned kittens. We have a special area of our home designated for the fosters.
I share their journeys with me on my Instagram page @bethostern and find forever families for them through social media. Has life in the Hamptons changed since the pandemic? Howard and I haven’t left our property since March. Life is so different. A lot more simple, but I pray every day that there will be a vaccine so we can go back to normal life. We have decided to not socialize at all until this happens. We connect with our friends virtually through Zoom and Facetime. Where do you go to find peace and quiet? There is a lot of peace and quiet these days being quarantined in our house! I have to say my kitten foster room is where I find lots of joy these days. Do you have a favorite spot in the Hamptons? A beach or restaurant? Our backyard!! There is nothing better.

How’s Howard? He’s still able to broadcast his show during this time, so he’s been busy working. He spends his free time doing watercolors and drawing with graphite. He’s been working on some exquisite Hamptons beach landscapes. It’s my birthday this week, and he usually paints something beautiful and meaningful for me. He’s actually painting in his office right now.

ALL THINGS
ALEXA RAY JOEL By Devorah Rose
What have you been working on? Quarantine puts things on hold a little bit, but I’m still working. I’m focusing on a new song called Heavy Eyes and will be releasing a single for it on iTunes in the future. I really enjoy sharing music and right now is such an important moment to do that because people need the catharsis. Describe your experience of the new normal. I’m a homebody, so it’s not as jarring as it is for most people. I’m happy when I have my candles lit, my cat near me, and can hear my cat purring. I need to have music playing. I need to be reading or writing. Home life for me is so important. I think the new normal is the right time to say it’s okay to draw inward and explore that inner life we all have. Recently you participated in the Kaufman Music Center’s Day of Musical Giving. Can you tell us about that? For the event I sang Beautiful Sights, a song that I wrote when I was nineteen. I felt like an outcast then who didn’t fit a certain mold of who I was supposed to be, and I was trying to define how to stay true to myself. I cried while I was writing it because I felt so intensely while writing it. It’s about exploring

the eccentric side of yourself and celebrating your individuality. It’s about being whoever you want to be and never feeling confined by societal norms and standards. That message cannot be said enough to a young person . . . especially young musicians finding their voice. People deserve to be who they are and celebrated for that. All eccentricities make a person that much more beautiful. What do you think about the Kaufman Music Center’s mission to stimulate the appreciation of and participation in musical performance and education? Music education is important and it works. As a teenager I took classical music training. I learned how to play Chopin and Beethoven on the piano, and my work is very rooted in classical influence. I wouldn’t be the writer that I am today without piano lessons. I feel thankful that my parents were encouraging of me being artistic. Dad [Billy Joel] played the piano and Mom [Christie Brinkley] would dress me up and film me singing. I’m following in my parents’ footsteps by telling these kids what my parents told me, which is to follow your dreams. Chase your dreams and don’t let anything get in the way. Don’t let outside structures hinder your instincts.
F E AT U R E S
What was your musical education? Similar to my father, I’m not a technically minded learner, so neither of us knows how to read music. My father sounds out Beethoven or the Beatles when he plays one of their works. I learned music through motion memory in my fingers. I would hear my teacher playing a song and then I would get it into my fingers and get it from there. Some kids are amazing technical learners. Everyone learns differently, but it’s all about support in whatever different way the student learns best. When I was learning the piano, I would memorize the pattern of the sounds and then I would trust my instincts.
I understand you helped raise funds for The Felix Foundation. The Felix Foundation raises funds for foster kids. It’s a beautiful mission, and when anyone asks me to sing for kids, I will never say no. I’m similar to my dad in that way. The fundraiser we held was a virtual show. Right now everyone has been going through emotional twists and turns so I chose to perform Summer, Highland Falls. Construction-wise I find it to be one of my father’s most brilliant songs. It’s a beautiful study of the human condition and really befitting of the times. It’s about feeling extremes. My favorite line is, “…and I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own.”
Can you tell us more about your process? I’m an emotional person and my art is based on instinct. You play a chord that matches the emotion you are feeling. Music is an instinctual and emotional art form. In this regimented world, status, and all of these societal constructs, music is such a liberating freedom. It’s an escape from all that.
I love your Instagram page (@alexarayjoel) and how personal you’ve made it. I especially enjoy all the music you’ve been posting recently. People have really responded to the music and want me to play more and that means a lot to me. I think people want to feel that escape, and I’m more than happy to oblige. Social Life

What was a recent posting on Instagram? I posted a song called Hide Away. It’s all about escapism. I’m just an enthusiast for escapism. If you listen to my clips and my writing, you will see that escapism is a running theme. People tell me to tone that theme down and ask me if I am in touch with reality, but everyone need an escape. Everyone needs an oasis that they can go to. Maybe it’s a piece of art, music, or poetry that can give you a sense of oasis and take you away for a little bit. If I can share my songs about escapisms, musings, or poetry that people can relate to and that provides some escape, then that brings meaning and purpose to my life. I don’t think there is anything more beautiful than sharing your soul. We need more baring of one another’s truth to get to a more peaceful place. SocialLifeMagazine.com
How is quarantining in the Hamptons going? I’m here with my fiancé, Ryan, and my cat, Stella. My mom is thrilled because she has all her kids here . . . so, yes, she is happy as a clam. We all kind of do our own thing and come together for dinner. We take the boat out a lot and do it in a safe socially distancing way. We are all staying on the safer side with quarantine for sure. It’s beautiful to have a community at this time. It reminds you of how important family is. I’m also getting my music set up here. I have a piano that I’m getting tuned so that I can work here, and I’m looking forward to that. A very special thank you to Ryan J. Gleason for the incredible images of Alexa. COMMAND EDUCATION CHRISTOPHER RIM: LEADING COLLEGE ADMISSIONS IN THE ERA OF COVID-19 By Rodney Sparrow
Christopher Rim
HAMPTONS POP-UP With the influx of families relocating to the Hamptons following the pandemic, many parents have been scrambling to make use of their children’s normally packed summer schedules. Across the country, internships and summer camps have been canceled, leaving many parents unsure of how to effectively plan their children’s summer. Because of this, Christopher Rim, the founder and CEO of Command Education, a premier education and college admissions consultancy headquartered in NYC, has been more involved than ever in the Hamptons, with the majority of his NYC-based clients having moved out East. In fact, demand has been so strong in the Hamptons that Christopher intends to spend the rest of the summer and much of the fall in Amagansett. In addition to video calls and distance-mentoring, the team has been busy with in-person meetings and tutoring sessions often arranged by their clients. Christopher and his team of mentors have been helping students in the Hamptons make the most of their summers to best set them up for success through high school and beyond.
FORBES 30 UNDER 30 IN EDUCATION Christopher Rim is not your typical education and college consultant. At 25, he was the youngest on the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Education in 2018 and has also received President Barack Obama’s Lifetime Achievement Award. When Christopher was in high school, he had neither a 4.0 GPA nor perfect standardized test scores, yet was the only applicant from over a dozen at his high school who was accepted to Yale. Christopher knew he lacked the perfect numbers Ivy League schools reputedly desired, but he also knew that his unique extracurricular activities made him stand out among his peers. Perhaps Yale recognized Christopher’s entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to start his first company in 8th grade, a global non-profit organization in high school, and Command Education while at Yale, which is “the nation’s leader in consulting admissions consulting,” according to People magazine in 2019. YALE CENTER FOR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE During his time at Yale, Christopher studied psychology under Dr. Marc Brackett, director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. As a research assistant, Christopher helped conduct a school climate survey of tens of thousands of high school students. The survey found that 75% of the words that students used to describe how they felt at school were negative. The most common were “tired,” “stressed,” and “bored.” Christopher wanted his work with students to help them feel just the opposite, and knew acting on his passions had led to his fulfillment and success. In a process Christopher calls “finding a hook,” mentors work with students to identify and develop their passions, which they are encouraged to explore in the classroom and within their community. Mentors guide students to excel academically, boost their confidence, and excite them about potential lifelong passions. In exploring their passions, students also have the opportunity to work with and learn from Command Education’s full-service in-house marketing team, which includes designers and a web developer. This team helps students expand their projects by guiding them as they build a website, develop branding and social media strategies, and garner press for student accomplishments. COMMAND EDUCATION’S SENIOR MENTORS At Command Education, each student has a mentor, someone to relate to and look up to. For high school seniors, mentors map out a plan for the entire college application process, from helping students choose the perfect schools to brainstorming and drafting compelling college essays. DR . ROBIN GANZERT JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS DR . ROBIN GANZERT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF AMERICAN HUMANE
For 143 years, American Humane has been the country’s leading voice for the humane treatment of animals. Can you tell me a little about the history of American Humane and what you are doing now to make a better world for our best friends? American Humane is this country’s very first national humane organization. We were founded in 1877 around the issue of protecting farm animals from mistreatment and went on to pioneer virtually all of the humane protections and advances for animals over the past century and a half. Today, we protect and improve the lives of nearly one billion animals around the world each year, helping ensure the proper treatment of hundreds of millions of farm animals, rare and endangered species in zoos and aquariums, and beloved animal actors appearing in movies and television through our well-known No Animals Were Harmed® program. We also rescue animals suffering in natural disasters, puppy mills, and large-scale hoarding and cruelty cases. I understand your rescue team has had a very busy year. Tell me how American Humane Rescue got started and what you’ve been doing during the past 12 months. It’s a fascinating story. Our American Humane Rescue program was actually born during World War I, when we were invited by the U.S. Secretary of War to save and care for war horses that were being killed and wounded in great numbers on the battlefields of Europe. American Humane volunteers deployed even before U.S. forces did, and we rescued and cared for 68,000 injured horses each month. Following the war, we turned our hand to saving animals in other types of calamities and have responded

to virtually every major national and international disaster from Pearl Harbor to 9/11 to devastating tornadoes to countless hurricanes, floods, and even the Japanese earthquake and nuclear meltdown. In just the past year, we’ve helped save animals caught in the disastrous floods that drowned Oklahoma, the monster Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, and the absolutely apocalyptic Australian wildfires, which burned 40,000 square miles of the continent — 12,000 square miles more than were burned in the Amazon, and 100 times more than the California wildfires, where we deployed our trained rescue team and delivered critical supplies. This is extraordinary work! Can you tell our readers how American Humane is responding to the Covid-19 pandemic? Robin, I am honored to be involved with the Feed the Hungry campaign. The thought of millions of animals in this country going without food and medical supplies is terrifying. STEVEN BERNSTEIN JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS STEVEN BERNSTEIN, THE PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ABOUT THE NEW PLAN FOR THE HOSPITAL’S SUMMER PARTY, WHICH BENEFITS THE JOHN AND JENNY PAULSON EMERGENCY ROOM.
With so many events cancelled, why are you going ahead with an annual fundraising party on August 1st? My team and I were wondering the same thing for a few weeks — could we hold an event that was safe for everyone and still be enjoyable? That’s when we came up with a very creative hybrid solution — a unique Summer Party. The reason for holding an event is two-fold. First, the annual Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Summer Party raises much-needed funds to support our Jenny and John Paulson Emergency Department, which is open 24 hours, 365 days a year for all residents and visitors to the East End. We are proud to say that no one is turned away. Our emergency department played a key role in our response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and so it is as important as ever to continue to raise funds for this vital community resource. Thanks to some very loyal supporters, we are well into the process of raising funds to build a new East Hampton satellite emergency department, and soon we will begin our capital campaign for the new Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. We have a deep understanding of what we need to continue offering to East End residents and visitors — the most advanced healthcare now and in the future. These plans are part of the reimagined future healthcare system that blends the best in academic medicine with the strengths of community-based care. Second, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for our hospital from this community. People of all different means, businesses of all different sizes — from

Westhampton to Montauk — contributed to the hospital in so many different ways to help us take care of this community. The collective support of the community was a wonderful reminder of what we are capable of when we all come together. From early on, we knew that as soon as possible, we would find new ways to give back to this community that has given so much to us. And, Jean, we thank you and your family for your continued support So, tell us how this reinvented, hybrid Summer Party will work this year? The first big difference is that our honorees will be our healthcare heroes. It was immediately obvious to us that this year our event must honor and thank all of our staff: all our nurses, physicians, therapists, cleaning, catering, security, and administration employees who responded to the Covid-19 pandemic with unparalleled dedication, bravery, and professionalism. Steve, this is an excellent idea. The healthcare heroes of the hospital truly deserve to be honored. The second thing is that it is impossible to hold one big event in Southampton as we have done for the past 61 years. This is where we became creative. Instead of one event, we are organizing multiple small events all over the East End. Our theme, Gala in the Garden, has become Gala in Your Garden. Anyone who buys a table to the Summer Party will receive a flower display and a delicious party box full of drinks, appetizers, and other treats. Then the table purchasers will have the option of ordering dinner for up to 10 people from a local restaurant. Everything will be delivered to enable our table patrons to host a party at home. Jean we thank you for serving on our host committee and for purchasing a table for the Summer Party. SocialLifeMagazine.com
I can’t think of anything more important to support in the community than the hospital. And I know many others feel this way too. Healthcare is vitally important to everyone who lives in the Hamptons. The third important difference is that this year, in an effort to support the East End economy, which has been hit so incredibly hard, every single one of our gala vendors is a local East End business. The virtual part of the evening is titled ‘7 Minutes at 7.’ We are asking as many people as possible to join us just for 7 minutes at 7 p.m. on August 1 to thank and toast our healthcare heroes. How can our readers buy a table to the Summer Party and how much do they cost? All the information is on our website. Tables start at $5,000 and go up to $100,000. This year for the first time ever there will be a $50 ticket, which will enable just about everyone to join us for the toast and celebrate safely at home! The inspiring show was shot over three days at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016, which means the original cast, including Miranda as Hamilton, can be seen. Miranda says, “The reason HamLin Manuel Miranda, Jonathan Geoff ilton works is because there is no distance between the story and what happened 200-some-odd years ago and now, because it looks like America now. SOCIETY
RACHEL’S RADAR SOCIAL LIFE By Rachel Heller
O
ur social lives continue even though major events have been cancelled. In today’s world we must socialize in another way and adapt to the new, and I can’t say it any other way. The different ways one must socialize have to be clever and safe at the same time. This poses a challenge for all of us, but socializing is still possible. There are different ways to do so as long as you do it within your comfort zone. Our species is defined by our social interactions. Health is more than just physical fitness. For most people, being healthy requires social interaction with friends and family. Time outdoors, exercise, and fun activities are necessary, not just beneficial. When making decisions about social contact during the coronavirus pandemic, we need to weigh the risk of the interaction versus the potential benefits to your overall health. BIKE RIDE One way is to organize a limited group of friends to go on a bike ride. This is safer than being indoors during Covid and is also in compliance with distancing rules. This organized activity allows you to share a common goal and challenge with other like-minded riders and stay in a covid-free safe zone. PHOTOGRAPHY Outdoor photography is a great option for observing and enjoying nature while documenting these extraordinary times. You can inspire others to appreciate nature by sharing your pictures.
Or you can even form a photography group with others who have a passion for photography. Discovering new ways to enjoy being social is part of the journey. PICNIC Another fun activity is a picnic with your crew. Eating together outdoors with a select few is fine as long as you stay apart when your masks are off for eating. Find a roomy spot along the water or in a park, depending on where you are located. I’ve been enjoying Ohza, pre-mixed canned mimosas that I pack for the boat as well as picnics. The company will deliver six-packs to your home. Instead of a huge wine bottle, pack mimosas in your picnic basket. HOME EVENTS | DINNERS Outdoor dinner parties are my personal favorite. The dinner party has made a resurgence in the new Covid world. Now, more than ever, being at home enjoying your family and friends is the key to happiness. We need others to sustain our happiness and the pandemic has only heightened our appreciation of the social world we live in. Rachel Heller Instagram: @rachelhellerxo Social Life

REFLECTING ON SOCIETY AND THE TIMES THROUGH ART SANDY COHEN’S ART COLLECTION STEALS OUR HEARTS By Veda Falmouth
I
n this time of rapid change and adjustment, the Hamptons artist Sandy Cohen has been a frequent topic of conversation because her innovative art reflects current happenings. Her work is spectacular. Social Life sat down with Sandy to learn more. What are you currently working on? I’ve been commissioned by one of my longtime clients to create large-scale matching paintings for her homes in Manhattan, Paris, and London. I’ve never embarked on this type of project, and it’s been very interesting so far. Has the pandemic ignited an artistic flame? This pandemic has become completely Sandy Cohen politicized. There is a change coming. People pulling in different directions. It feels like a time of either submission or revolt. This fascinates me, inspiring me to create pieces reflecting what people are truly thinking and feeling during this confusing time. Can you talk to us about your painting style? The truth is that I don’t have one painting style. I think that’s part of what makes me unique as an artist in this current market. I refuse to conform to the idea that an artist has to stick to one repetitive style. That seems like the opposite of what true art is. It’s boring. It’s safe. Art must evolve along with the artist and the world around them. Tell us about the profiles of some of your recent clients? I’m truly humbled by the fact that my work appeals to a very broad clientele. Bankers, Wall Street types, CEOs of well-known

corporations, builders, WWF wrestlers, fashion designers, film producers, doctors, hip-hop artists, royals, actors, even children enjoy and own my work. What’s more interesting than the profiles of my clients are the personal stories they share with me and the friendships I develop with them. I enjoy working with people one-on-one and they enjoy being a part of the artistic process and experience. We just love your work! What is next for you? I’m exhibiting at Gallery 23 in Chelsea this summer. I’m also working on an animated series being developed by my collector Saud Al Thani, who’s become more like a brother to me. I love animation so I’m stoked! Sandy Cohen sandycohenart.com Instagram: @sandycohensart Social Life

Knowing each buyer or renter has his or her own idea of what defines his or her Hamptons experience, he is well versed on the inventory of each village and hamlet on the East End.

FAME THE LUXURY STONE EXPERT & DIRECT IMPORTER By Jennifer Rothschild
Y
ou may have the biggest house on the block, on the beach or steps from the bay. But, nothing — and we mean nothing — sings luxury home more than exquisite stone accenting the inside of your home. Fame is well known in the Hamptons and beyond for her ability to source inimitable natural stone across a broad selection of marble, quartzite, precious stone, unique granite, limestone, and so much more. Fame operates a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Connecticut and a showroom in the Hamptons, and is the sought-out, go-to person for all things stone for the home. Social Life sat down with her to learn more about how she does it.
Hermes Quartzite
Developer: Bruce Bronster | Photographer: Daniel D’Ottavio
Why is finding the right type of stone for your various rooms so important? Every room sets a different tone and where stone will be used should determines the final selection. You may find something gorgeous for a wall, but it may not be optimal for a kitchen countertop in terms of maintenance, aesthetics, or installation. You also want your various stone selections to communicate well with each other, so that your home doesn’t end up looking like a showroom. You always have to keep in mind that as beautiful as a slab may be, its beauty in your home will depend on where it’s used and how it’s installed. As a stone expert, I know how to take advantage of stone slabs to maximize their beauty. Social Life
HOME
How would your clients describe sourcing stone at Fame Luxury Stone? It’s funny you ask that. Most recently, one of my favorite designer clients described it as “such a sexy experience to see so many beautiful stone selections perfectly lined up in a massive warehouse.”
Calacatta Black
Calacatta Murcielago
Can you give us advice about finding the perfect kitchen stone? The kitchen is an important space as it brings everyone together. It is also a space that you may be using very often. I’m a huge fan of quartzite at the moment. Quartzite offers a lot of the appeal that marble possesses in terms of natural beauty, but is more resilient. I also like granites with leathered or honed finishes. A cool finish can be a conversation piece because it makes the stone look completely different from one that’s been polished. Marble is interesting because it is so feared, yet it’s the most sought after by high-end clientele. This gorgeous stone seduces homeowners to ultimately possess it regardless of the maintenance. I have to be cutting-edge with my products, so I offer highly advanced marble sealers that prevent etching and staining. When my clients learn about all their options, they are then able to winnow down their selections and get what they truly desire. What stone is the rarest? And which is most coveted by your clients? I created an entire line of designer stones, which consists of rare selections. Some of my rare stones that clients absolutely love are Calacatta Murcielago, Lincoln Quartzite, and Luxury White Quartzite. However, I specialize in rare blocks and, most recently, I imported an absolutely one-of-a-kind marble for book-matched wall applications. I believe a seasoned designer with an eye for stone will be the client for it.

LISA MAYSONET BRINGS GLOBAL REALTY EXPERTISE TO NYC & THE HAMPTONS By Elizabeth Elston
W
ith 40 years of success selling Manhattan’s top properties, go-to luxury real estate expert Lisa Maysonet is making waves in the red-hot Hamptons market. To better serve her longstanding New York clients, Maysonet — the tour-de-force behind Group Maysonet at Sotheby’s International Realty — is now marketing the East End’s most exclusive residences and new developments.
“This expansion into the Hamptons is exciting and very energizing,” says Maysonet, who started her career in the real estate industry at Walters & Samuels when she was just 17 years old. “I love the amazing homes out here. My New York buyers are out here. Now I’m out here, and I’m bringing my deep love of real estate and global expertise with me.” For decades, Maysonet has been a key marketing advisor to the world’s top developers, influencing the design of and exclusively marketing for over a dozen well-known new developments and conversions, such as Park South Lofts. In 2015, Lisa, alongside her husband and partner, Gary Kabol, successfully negotiated the WeWork deal at 88 University Place for $70 million. “I’ve worked with real estate professionals, architects, and developers in markets like Hong Kong, Russia, Canada, and Israel,” she says. “I study the product, the finishes, the layouts, the development, how they do things, and bring that knowledge, expertise, and passion to the homes I sell to my clients.” Her new Hamptons office complements her established Madison Avenue business, where she has handled more than $1 billion in real estate transactions to date, along the city’s best-known Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue addresses. Maysonet’s outstanding real estate track record has earned her coverage in the New York Times, the New York Post, People, CNN/Money, Forbes.com, Manhattan Living, the NY Observer, The Real Deal, NY Living, Fox 5, the Discovery Channel, WB 11, and Germany’s ProSeiban network. She is also a member of the Real Estate Board of New York, Long Island Board of Realtors, Associated Builders & Owners Association, Professional Women in Construction, Association of Real Estate Women, Parents League of NY, Covenant House for Homeless Teens, Children’s Aid Society, and Spirituality for Kids. She also volunteers at God’s Love We Deliver. “I started in this business in 1970s and I’ve never stopped expanding,” she says. “I successfully navigated through a myriad of markets, credit crises, 9/11, and 19.5 percent interest rates. Through it all, I never stopped. It’s because I work hard for my clients. I work hard . . . period.” Lisa Maysonet Group Maysonet at Sotheby’s International Realty sothebyshomes.com/nyc/agents/lisa.maysonet Social Life

NEW ORLEANS THE BIG EASY IS OPEN By R. Couri Hay

THE FRENCH QUARTER New Orleans has been in Phase Two of its reopening since early June. Restaurants, bars, shops, gyms, and salons are operating at fifty percent capacity. The fun hasn’t stopped, but social distancing and masks, always important accessories in New Orleans, is now de rigueur. Walking around the French Quarter in New Orleans is an immersive art experience replete with live music on every block, historical architecture from the mid-18th century, tap dancers, fantastically costumed revelers no matter the month, amazing food and smaller Mardi Gras parades every Sunday all year long. Let’s not forget the voodoo culture — ghosts in every nook and cranny and cemeteries where everyone is buried in crypts aboveground. From the moment you enter the Quarter, you are transported into another world — a world of endless fun and bottomless drinks. It’s perfectly legal to carry a drink up and down Bourbon street, as long as it’s not in a glass container. The size of the crowds depends on the time of year, the weather . . . and the current pandemic. The French Quarter is not just for revelers, however; it is an area steeped in history; its charming streets lined with elegant houses behind whose facades lie palm-shaded courtyards complete with gurgling fountains. MARDI GRAS 2021 IS UP IN THE AIR In April, the mayor of New Orleans, Latoya Cantrell, said that canceling Mardi Gras in 2021 “is something we have to think about.” Mardi Gras has actually been canceled 13 times since its formal inception in the mid-1800s, most notably during the Civil War and both world wars. It’s hard to imagine calling off festivities, but time will tell if a scaled-down celebration would be more appropriate because of Covid-19.
New Orleans, Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras means “fat Tuesday” in French, and it literally refers to the last night of eating rich and fattening foods before Ash Wednesday, the first of 40 days of Lenten restraint and piety preceding Easter Sunday. This Tuesday date changes from year to year, and it will be February 16 in 2021. But Mardi Gras, also known as Carnival, really refers to weeks of celebration that begin on January 6, the Christian feast of the Epiphany. While Mardi Gras celebrations occurred in Louisiana as far back as 1699, it wasn’t until 1856 that a group of businessmen formed a secret society to organize a formal parade in New Orleans, and established the first of the krewes (alteration of crews), social clubs that host various parades. The two oldest and most famous krewes are the Mistick Krewe of Comus and Krewe of Rex. Social Life

MEETING OF THE COURTS In New Orleans, there is more to the tradition than raucous parades and bead-strewing crowds. The krewes are real social clubs that even today hold invitation-only masked balls throughout the season. Women start dress fittings as early as the prior spring, and Mardi Gras formally concludes just before midnight with a ceremony known as the “Meeting of the Courts” in which Krewe Rex’s king and queen of Carnival leave their ball to meet with Comus and his queen at the Mistick Krewe’s ball. The scene there is one of parallel worlds, where the high society of New Orleans present their daughters at a traditional debutante ball while the wildly dressed parade-goers swirl around everywhere. I remember being an escort at Comus, the chicest of the two balls, back in the day when Caroline Kennedy also attended.
Royal Sonesta Hotel
WHERE TO STAY IN THE FRENCH QUARTER
THE ROYAL SONESTA HOTEL My favorite hotel is The Royal Sonesta, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. This luxury hotel, which reopened on July 1 with state-of-the-art safety procedures, is located at 300 Bourbon Street. It’s in the middle of everything and within easy walking distance of the top restaurants, shops, museums, and the center of old New Orleans, Jackson Square. The Royal Sonesta building dates from 1890 and was a brewery before becoming a five-star hotel. The Bourbon Street address was originally a residence in 1721, when the city of New Orleans was first laid out, but by the 19th century it had become a winery. In 1890, the American Brewing Company purchased the winery, expanded it to encompass the entire city block, and in 1969 the landmarked complex was transformed into a luxury Sonesta Hotel. Prices range from $250 to $2,400. You can get a room at the Sonesta with a balcony facing Bourbon Street, the best choice for those who want to stay off the street but up all night while Bourbon Street jams. I chose to stay on the concierge floor in the rear of the hotel, which is very quiet and private. A dedicated concierge can make your restaurant and club reservations. The concierge knows the city and is happy to suggest outings, from museums to ghost tours. The hotel also boasts a rooftop pool; a 24-hour fitness center; business facilities; a cool jazz club with live performances; and Le Booze, a destination whiskey bar.
I highly recommend you stay in the French Quarter proper. Good choices here include the historic Cornstalk Hotel with only 14 rooms. Originally a private home dating to 1816, the hotel’s name comes from its iron fence depicting cornstalks, erected in the 1850s by the owner as a remedy for his Iowa-born wife’s homesickness. The building is reputed to be one of the most photographed in the French Quarter, and elegant rooms range from $100 to $300 per night, depending on the season.
RESTAURANT R’EVOLUTION One of the Quarter’s top dining spots is Restaurant R’evolution, created by the world-famous chefs John Folse and Rick Tramonto. Highlights of the superb menu include fire-roasted oysters; a double-thick veal chop; grilled swordfish with oysters; beer-battered crab beignets; and “death by gumbo,” which has roasted quail in it. For dessert, I recommend you ask for a split plate. I had the famous coconut bread pudding crème brûlée and the warm chocolate cake.
CELEBRITIES AS GRAND MARSHALS Over the years, Mardi Gras has been a mecca for celebrities of all kinds. They also serve as grand marshals for the various parades. They come from the world of sports, screen and stage, TV, music, literature, and art, and have included New Orleanians Patricia Clarkson, Anthony Mackie, and Harry Connick Jr.

THINGS TO DO & SEE BOURBON STREET & ROYAL STREET The number one thing to do is walk around and soak up the music and the atmosphere of the French Quarter. It is unlike anyplace else in the world. Every street holds special magic and beautiful architecture. Bourbon Street is a boozy scene, but go one street over to Royal Street and you’ll find a more refined vibe. Check out the antique shops and don’t miss M.S. Rau, arguably the finest antique store in America, which has just doubled its exhibition space to almost 50,000 square feet. At this 112-year-old family-run emporium, you’ll find a trove of rare antiques, art, and jewelry. Some of the highlights currently for sale include the English King Edward VII’s “seat of love” — a sex chair custom-designed for his youthful escapades in Paris ($68,500); a rare 17th-century Italian Baroque wroughtiron safe ($98,500); a 15-carat sapphire ring by Fred ($698,500); and René Magritte’s Le Carnaval du sage, a painting of a nude, masked woman, (price upon request. Think in the millions).
Jackson Square, Photo courtesy of neworleans.com
JACKSON SQUARE & THE BASILICA Jackson Square is the center of the French Quarter and has been since the city of New Orleans began in 1718, when it was built by the French as a military parade ground named Place d’Armes, later named Plaza de Armas by the Spanish. The layout was inspired by a 17th-century square in Paris, the elegant Place des Vosges. Surrounding Jackson Square are some of the city’s top destinations — the St. Louis Cathedral, one of the country’s oldest basilicas; the Cabildo, formerly the seat of the Spanish colony; and the Presbytère, originally built to house clergy. The latter two are now part of the Louisiana State Museum. Even with its long history, Jackson Square is still vibrant, popular with locals and visitors. In the surrounding area, you’ll find open-air markets for artists showing their wares; the French Market, the oldest of its kind in the United States, the famous Café du Monde; and the Mississippi River.
HISTORIC HOUSES If you like history, the French Quarter is steeped in it. There are several historic homes open to the public. Two of the finest are the Hermann-Grima House and the Gallier House. HERMANN-GRIMA HOUSE | 820 St. Louis Street This 1831 Federal-style home includes a large courtyard and outbuildings like stables and slave quarters, showing how prosperous families lived in that age. Quite a bit of the antique furnishings in the home belonged to the Hermann or Grima families. The original owner, Samuel Hermann, a trader, went broke when the cotton market collapsed in 1837. He then sold the property to Felix Grima, a lawyer. In 1975 it was turned into a house museum.

GALLIER HOUSE | 1126 Royal Street The 1860 Gallier House was the home of James Gallier Jr, one of New Orleans’ most prominent architects. It was a home highly innovative for its time, one of the first in the region to have both hot and cold running water, and offers a glimpse into the era’s elegant lifestyle and design.
was invented and named for John D. Rockefeller, America’s richest man at the time. Today, the restaurant is still run by descendants of the founder, Antoine Alciatore, and it has served over four million oysters since 1840 to the likes of Brad Pitt, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Sydney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, almost every U.S. president since Herbert Hoover, and John D. Rockefeller himself.
NEW ORLEANS CEMETERIES
GALATOIRE’S For several generations of New Orleans’ residents, Galatoire’s, founded in 1905, is the place to go for lunch. Families have their regular tables and waiters. Founded by the Frenchman Jean Galatoire and still run by his descendants, signature dishes include trout Marguery, turtle soup, crabmeat ravigote, and oysters en brochette. I had the trout sautéed with crab meat; the more traditional way here it to deep fry the trout. Mick Jagger, Harpo Marx, and several U.S. presidents have dined here. Tennessee Williams, a regular, liked to sit at the front window, and Mark Twain described Galatoire’s pompano dish as “delicious as the less criminal forms of sin.”
New Orleans cemeteries are notable for their ornate mausoleums. Because the city is below sea level; bodies cannot be buried underground or they’d float to the surface. Many cemeteries are open for tours, including the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the city’s oldest, c.1789, which houses the tomb of the voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Another tomb here that has yet to be filled, a white pyramid, is where the actor Nicolas Cage plans to be buried. The 19th-century Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, located in the city’s Garden District, may look familiar, because it has appeared in music videos by LeAnn Rimes and New Kids on the Block, and in the films Double Jeopardy (1999) and Dracula 2000 (2000). Lafayette No. 1 also serves as the fictional resting place for characters in two Anne Rice novels, Interview with a Vampire and The Witching Hour.

FRENCH QUARTER DINING ANTOINE’S The Quarter is not all honky-tonks and jazz bars. There are toptier restaurants here, some with over a hundred years of history. Top among them is Antoine’s, where the rich-sauce oysters Rockefeller Oysters Rockefeller at Antoine’s, Photo courtesy of Antoine’s
CAFÉ DU MONDE & CAFÉ BEIGNET You can’t come to New Orleans and not have beignets; this simple dish is made of fried dough covered in powdered sugar, served hot either on a plate or in a bag. If you don’t mind standing in line for an hour, you can go to the famous Café Du Monde in Jackson Square, but if you want the exact same dish, and you want it fast, go to the charming Café Beignet across from the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street. Here you can take in live jazz while you enjoy the supreme decadence of this legendary New Orleans confection. THE MARDI GRAS MUSEUM Even if your visit to New Orleans is not during the Carnival season, you can experience some of the magic with a visit to The Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes & Culture. It has rotating exhibitions about the tradition, its movers and shakers, and costumes from the personal collection of the museum’s founder, Carl Mack. Don’t miss the costume closet, where you can try on the glittering bejeweled creations and be a king or queen for the day. You’ll want to take a lot of selfies — this is a fun stop.

DEMARCHELIER RESTAURANT A TASTE OF FRANCE COMES TO LONG ISLAND’S NORTH FORK By Harry Brads
Emily and Benjamin Demarchelier
T
he family owned and operated French restaurant Demarchelier has arrived on the North Fork’s dining scene, in the charming village of Greenport. This new incarnation of the Upper East Side classic is currently located at the Menhaden Hotel, an AHEAD Americas 2020 Virtual Awardwinner. Led by siblings Emily and Benjamin Demarchelier, the North Fork newcomer is a family affair that builds on the legacy of the Demarchelier family’s eatery in New York. Serving traditional French fare, popular dishes include the steak tartare appetizer, duck à l’orange, and moules marinière entrées. The menu is paired perfectly with a wide range of predominantly French wines. Since the original Demarchelier opened in 1978, it has worked to bring a little piece of France to New York. Every
meal that leaves the kitchen expresses the soul of authentic French fare. Demarchelier continues to be a family-owned and family-run restaurant. Its comfortable, colorful, warm, familial spirit makes it a neighborhood fixture, ideal for a quick bite to eat, a romantic rendezvous, or a meal with your family. In the fall, Demarchelier will be opening a Greenport bistro at 471 Main Street, recreating the same ambiance as the Upper East Side, just a little more casual. Demarchelier looks to bringing to the North Fork of Long Island another taste of France! THE RAM’S HEAD INN TIMELESS AND CAPTIVATING By Rolise Rachel
O
n Shelter Island, the restaurant at the Ram’s Head Inn is now open for outdoor service, and the hotel is open at 50% capacity. This hidden jewel of Shelter Island is timeless and captivating. Tourism on the island began in the 1800s when New Yorkers sought solace and wanted to escape the heat of the bustling city. The island is known for its New England style and has become a goto when seeking a quaint but refined and less polished destination. Mrs. Joan Covey of Great Neck built the inn and then invited her swanky 1920s Gold Coast crowd with lowered rates in 1929. We must remember that 1929 was the beginning of the worst economic downfall in the history of the industrialized world. Her guest list must have been tremendously impressive, replete with important names from the political, financial, and art worlds. Think of Gatsby’s crowd on vacation out East in a private hamlet, at a private inn. The restaurant offers dinner every night with all-day service on Saturdays and offers a Sunday brunch. Chef Joe Smith returns this season with his famous, locally sourced menu featuring freshly caught seafood and Long Island duck. Of course, the Ram’s Head Sunday brunch that leads into Sunday jazz evenings remains a favorite summer event for locals and visitors. Live music played by local bands is usually offered in the lounge several times a week and is currently available on the patio and streamed online via the Ram’s Head Inn’s Facebook page.
If you have time, take a stroll through the bar area filled with memorabilia about local and global interests, including physics. The Ram’s Head Inn was the site Robert Oppenheim chose for a 1947 physicists conclave on foundational quantum mechanics. Today, the current owners, husband-and-wife James and Linda Eklund, who have owned the inn since 1979, invite guests to enjoy the picturesque sunsets, fine dining, and New England-style accommodations. The lush sloping lawn offers Adirondack chairs for sunset cocktails, a quaint gazebo that overlooks Coecles Harbor brimming with sailboats, and a view to the bay beach across the street. The inn’s dock can accommodate boats coming in for dinner or for an overnight stay. Guests also have their pick from a fleet of sailboats, kayaks, and paddleboards and full access to the onsite tennis and bocce courts. “We attribute the inn’s success and longevity to its accessibility and incomparable setting. Guests need only to walk out onto the front lawn to be immersed in the beauty of their surroundings and the undeniable charm of being on an island,” said Linda Eklund

SAL STRAZZULLO STRAZZULLO LAW By Carlos Lacayo
Sal Strazzullo at Pietro’s Fight
ITALIAN-AMERICAN There are few lawyers in New York City who are more committed to their clients than Sal Strazzullo. It’s no surprise that Sal is the type of lawyer to take on tough cases. Growing up as a first-generation Italian-American, he attended public school in the middle-class neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, which had a graduation rate of less than 40%. Later on, Sal attended John Jay University where he studied political science before attending New York Law School. THE REAL DEAL, WSJ, CNN & FOX In 2001, Sal started Strazzullo Law, a general practice firm specializing in all areas of the law, including real estate and estate planning as well as criminal and civil litigation. Strazzullo Law was founded while the devastation of 9/11 lingered throughout the city. He had taken the bar exam only months before, essentially leaving his future up in the air. “I didn’t know whether or not I passed until November,” Sal says. He moved his office to a Brooklyn outpost where he continued a real-estate practice that eventually grew into trusts, 1031 tax-deferred real-estate transactions, and estate planning. Sal has become the go-to firm for real-estate closings, representing buyers and sellers in all areas of the transaction. He has represented some VIP names in banking like HSBC and Citibank and has been featured on The Real Deal, CNN, Fox and Friends, Good Day New York, and in the Wall Street Journal.
Strazzullo Law’s New Tribeca Location
SEA WORLD, FOXY BROWN & OSCAR DE LA HOYA Sal has represented NYC’s elite in some of the most highprofile criminal cases in the past decade involving sports players, supermodels, actresses, and rappers. Some clients included the top Dutch model Roosmarjin de Kok; Foxy Brown; the president of Sea World in a security fraud case (at the same time, he represented this client on the sale of his condo in TriBeCa); Silvia Mena, who sued the Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth; and Milana Dravnel, who filed a $25 million defamation suit against the boxer Oscar De La Hoya. While representing his high-profile cases, Sal also represents the full range of people throughout New York City, his hometown. A PART OF THE COMMUNITY Although Sal has become known for his high-profile criminal cases and television appearances, he spends a lot of time with the real estate division of his firm. Even during the pandemic, Sal has closed over 40 transactions related to the buying or selling of properties. “Although buying and selling have slowed down a bit, there were already many deals in motion before the pandemic, and in the past weeks there’s been a resurgence of buyers and sellers,” says Sal. NEW TRIBECA OFFICE Strazzullo Law recently opened a new office in Tribeca. This will be the firm’s fourth physical office, with two in Brooklyn and one in Italy. Strazzullo Law also has two satellite offices: one in Battery Park, and one on Park Avenue. Sal says these six offices give him the capacity to tend to the needs of specific communities. The new Tribeca location was previously a spacious, street-level retail store. “I want to be a part of the community, and trapping yourself in a stuffy tall office building is a thing of the past,” he says. Tribeca is also like a second home to the Strazzullo family. “My kids go to school in Tribeca, my wife shops here, we eat at restaurants in the neighborhood, I go to the gym in Tribeca, so it made sense to have an office here,” he says. DDC, the world-renowned design/furniture studio designed the new space with the help of Daniel Hakakian, DDC’s vice president. CHILDREN’S HEALTH COUNCIL Sal is a member of the Ben-Bay Kiwanis Club, a group of politicians, mayors, and district attorneys who are involved with a variety of projects, which include fundraising, community service, and assisting children locally and worldwide. Sal is also a member of the Children’s Health Council, which raises funds for pediatric research at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Hospital. SocialLifeMagazine.com
MASTER OF UNCERTAINTY During the pandemic, Strazzullo Law stayed open because of the exceptional real estate transactions and 1031 exchanges the firm handles. Employees could work remotely, and everyone in the offices practiced social distancing. “I wanted to be able to put my flag up and show that we were still here. Right now there are a lot of opportunities out there, just like there were post-9/11 and the Great Recession of 2008. I have no doubt that post-Covid, there are going to be opportunities that people are going to regret not taking advantage of.” FAMILY FIRST Sal is most proud of his beautiful, growing family. He considers his greatest accomplishments to be marrying his beautiful wife, Alison, and raising his three children, Michele, Annunziata, and Emilio. The Strazzullo family resides in Battery Park.

hen I first met Eugenia Kuzmina at the Four Seasons Hotel in NYC, I was struck by her blue eyes that reminded me of Cartier sapphires. The rest of Eugenia — the power behind ModelMomTV — is extremely easy on the eyes. Her lithe figure and hilarious sense of humor make her unforgettable. She is also kind, cool, and fearless. You would need to be fearless to perform stand-up in comedy clubs, especially at renowned places like the Comedy Club
and Laugh Factory. I was lucky enough to catch her perform in NYC, which she rarely does because she lives in L.A. with her husband, Bill Block (Miramax CEO), and three children. Her self-depreciating jokes about being a beautiful blonde bring big laughs and lots of applause. Eugenia is a renaissance woman. Since then, she’s worked all over the globe doing high-end work for Dior, Hermès, L’Oréal, and appearing in A-list magazines like Vogue and Elle. Eugenia’s glamorous work as a model and her committed life as a mother led her to create ModelMom.TV. “I decided to create this platform to share my experiences on modeling, acting, comedy, and motherhood for anyone who is not afraid to live outside the box, follow their dreams, be a parent, and have fun along the way,” says Eugenia. NEW YORK SUPER ATTORNEY RANDY ZELIN HEADS WILK AUSLANDER’S CRIMINAL LAW PRACTICE By Ann Grenier
Randy Zelin, Photo by Patrick McMullan
A
noted trial attorney with a concentration in white-collar criminal defense as well as complex civil litigation matters, Randy Zelin has been named a New York Super Lawyer in consecutive years from 2011 through 2020. He has over 30 years of experience defending individual and corporate clients in both state and federal courts across the United States. Randy Zelin was recently chosen to head Wilk Auslander’s criminal law practice.
Zelin is currently representing Akbar Rogers in the highprofile case that alleges police brutality in Freeport, New York. Zelin has been interviewed by Newsweek on the Akbar Rogers case and other police brutality cases. As a result of the George Floyd protests, Zelin has also appeared on Fox News, Newsmax, and CBS This Morning to discuss police brutality cases. Zelin, who started his career as a prosecutor, has represented many types of business organizations, boards of directors, special committees, professionals, and individuals in all aspects of criminal, regulatory, self-regulatory, and civil matters, including frauds related to securities, banking, tax, customs, bankruptcy, and insurance, to name a few. In other words, Zelin is a true trial lawyer, having built his career trying complex fraud and business crime cases. He hasn’t been named a Super Lawyer for nothing; Zelin has successfully defended many high-profile cases. He received world-wide acclaim for his representation of Lapo Elkann, the scion of the Fiat industrial dynasty, industrialist, and entrepreneur. Zelin negotiated and obtained a dismissal of all criminal charges against Elkann before charges were ever filed in court. In another case, Zelin successfully defended a federal insidertrading case where the government dismissed the case after the jury could not reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared. A highly sought after legal commentator for the media, Zelin regularly appears on Fox News, Fox Business Channel, CNN, CBSN, CNN Headline News, Bloomberg i24 News, AP News, Law and Crime, Yahoo Finance, local network television and in the New York Law Journal, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, where he offers his expertise on a wide range of legal issues and cases. Zelin is known throughout the United States as having successfully gotten a 345-month downward variance for a celebrity client in a federal securities fraud case. His greatest achievements, however, are those that never come to light — where the problem is solved before there even is a problem, where the high-profile client’s problems get no publicity, and where the client never sees the inside of a courtroom.

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT OF SUCCESS uuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Chapter 15 u u u u u u u u u u u u u u
Thou Must Smile In The Face Of Adversity Until It Surrenders You are wiser than most, once you realize that adversity is never the permanent condition of man. And yet this wisdom alone is not sufficient. Adversity and failure can destroy you while you wait patiently for your fortune to change. Deal with them in only one way. Welcome them both, with open arms! Since this injunction goes against all logic or reason, it is the most difficult to understand or master. Let the tears you shed, over your misfortunes, cleanse thine eyes so that ye might see the truth. Realize that he who wrestles with you always strengthens your nerves and sharpens your skills. Your antagonist is always, in the end, JAMES C. METZGER your best helper. Chairman / CEO
Adversity is the rain in your life, cold, comfortless, and unfriendly. Yet from that season are born the lily, the rose, the date, and the pomegranate. Who can tell what great things you will bring forth after you have been parched by the heat of tribulation and drenched by the rains of affliction? Even the desert blooms after a storm. Adversity is also your greatest teacher. You will learn little from your victories but when you are pushed, tormented, and defeated you will acquire great knowledge, for only then will you become acquainted with your true self since you are free, at last, from those who flatter thee. And who are your friends? When adversity engulfs you is the best time to count them. Remind thyself, in the darkest moments, that every failure is only a step toward success, every detection of what is false directs you toward what is true, every trial exhausts some tempting form of error, and every adversity will only hide, for a time, your path to peace and fulfillment.
