I love June in the Hamptons. Summer is on the way and the warm weather is here. A special day in June is Father’s Day. Spend time with your dad, for I believe family is the key to happiness and a fulfilling life. As I ride my bike through the Hamptons, I see all the reasons why I come out here. My journey takes me down winding back roads, along quiet paths through the woods, past expanses of potato fields, to stretches of sandy beaches. It’s hard to believe that such variety in nature is accessible from one area. And to me the Hamptons is the most beautiful place on Earth. The time I spend in the outdoors I consider some of the best moments of my life. It’s good to do some walking too. When I roam through Southampton and East Hampton villages, I get to see all the stores, activities and people in town. Bumping into friends, or having a coffee at the Golden Pear, is priceless. What a great feeling to be part of a small village, and the feeling of home that comes with it. I can’t imagine another place to build lifelong memories and spend time with family and friends. Coming in July will be many charity events. I urge you to go to as many as possible. Your purchase of tickets helps to support these numerous charities, which rely on our help to succeed in their cuase. These events also help us to keep connected to one another and the Hamptons community. Have a great June! Justin Mitchell

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography.

A few Fridays ago, it was my kind of perfect summer day. The sky was like a thin veil of hematite, clouded and yet the day was bright. The wind had the refreshing chill of freshly washed hands. The beach was overcast without a drop of rain. To lie down in the sand on a summer’s day, listening to the sighing of the water while watching clouds float across the sky in Picasso shapes is a rare and wonderful thing. When is the last time you watched the sky and allowed your imagination to see things in the cloud formations? It was probably a common pastime during childhood years that was then forgotten in adulthood. Childlike imagination can make our perceptions finer, so for a moment, our eyes can see more and our ears can truly hear what is always there around us. This phenomenon is eloquently described by one of my favorite Allen Ginsberg quotes. He says that one can possess more if one is aware of more.

Every American wants MORE MORE of the world and why not, you only live once. But the mistake made in America is persons accumulate more more dead matter, machinery, possessions & rugs & fact information at the expense of what really counts as more: feeling, good feeling, sex feeling, tenderness feeling, mutual feeling. You own twice as much rug if you’re twice as aware of the rug. My wish for this Hamptons summer is that we all move through the summer’s beauty with present moment awareness of the world around us. With heightened senses, I hope all of you feel feelings with intensity and gratitude. Moving through the world in this way, may we all possess more summer! With this joyous childlike intensity I wish that every reader delight in their home, friends, family, and nature with happiness multiplied ten times over. Of course, my editor-in-chief letter would not be fully mine if I failed to mention animals. I recently saw a picture of a dog cuddling next to its master who was surrendering him to a shelter. In case you didn’t know, dogs are hardwired to be loyal to their owners — so much so that when a dog sees their owner their brain releases the same chemicals our brains release when we are in love. You are your pet’s entire world — sun, moon, and stars. So if you yell or punish an animal instead of gently correcting them, the animal will feel as if the entire world has turned against them. Can you imagine such an overwhelming feeling? Please be kind to your pets. Do not purchase an animal unless you are willing to make a responsible life commitment to that pet. And if you have made the wonderful decision to adopt a pet at a shelter, I recommend adopting an older dog. This group tends to be housebroken and trained. Also the older dogs are more aware that you are saving their life and will shower you with appreciation and thankfulness. Puppies are wonderful dogs to adopt as well but it amazes me how many individuals are not aware of the amount of work it takes to house train and acclimate a young pet. And with those thoughts I wish everyone a wonderful and happy weekend. Enjoy!

Emotion From Alexander McQueen’s dark dream to Dior’s and Marc Jacobs’ exuberant odes to retro glamour and Old Hollywood, one standout trend of the spring/summer 2016 season was emotion. Designers packed their collections with raw and tumultuous attitudes that took form in bold colors and fantasy-inspired frocks. Wear your emotion on your sleeve this summer and channel your favorite designer in this summer’s bold trend.

Colorless Chic Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you need to pack away your black-and-white looks. Rocking black and white successfully over the warm summer months can be just as chic and sophisticated as working a bold hue. Even the industry’s most famed color lovers have forgone bright fabrics and bold prints for simple and sleek colorless numbers. The idea emerged during the spring/summer 2016 shows that color is so last season.

Jetsetter Style: Curaçao In Motion By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.

C

uraçao: a Dutch-flavored isle with blue seas, white sand, and bold color. This is what comes to mind when first thinking of the country. But more than a beautiful destination, Curaçao is a nation in motion. There is no better place to see the country’s growth than in the culinary arts. Local dishes include Dutch and Indonesian favorites, of course, with the freshest local seafood at many casual beachside bars. That we know. However, a new generation of foodies is reshaping the contemporary culinary scene. Millenials are buying abandoned plantations and restoring them to their former glory. Hofi Cas Cora is one in particular that focuses on delicious farm-to-table produce and organic ingredients.

It’s not just the young millennials that are trying to make a change. Dinah Veeris is a 77-year-old herbalist who has spent the last 20 years personally planting and nurturing herbs and plants from around the world. Her many different plant species have become essential to Curaçao’s herbal remedies. She now has more than 300 different plant species growing in her tiny garden. In case the blossoming food scene isn’t enough to convince you to book your stay, JetBlue now has direct flights from JFK to Willemstad, Curaçao’s capital. As if you really needed another reason. Head to curacao.com/en for more information. Or book your stay now at the posh Avila Beach Hotel at avilabeachhotel.com

Beach Days Should Be Bunion Free By Madison Cole

N

othing beats a beach weekend. We bask in the sun, soak up the summer vibes, and get a break from the beeping devices and recirculated office air that dominate our Monday-to-Friday routines. We live for these weekends and we come alive during them. But nothing throws a bigger wrench in seaside bliss than feeling uncomfortable in your own skin. No, we’re not talking about your body. (Bootcamp paid off.) We’re talking about your feet — the feet you’re digging in the sand and covering with a towel. You’re not the only beachgoer with toe woes. Bunions plague a lot of weekend warriors who refuse to put their non-stop schedules, or high-heel obsessions, on hold. Crushing it in three-inch platforms is your M.O. Unfortunately, it’s also your Achilles heel. But, there’s no need to spend another summer hiding and hurting. Instead, head to Dr. Neal Blitz for a foot fix. The New York–based reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon is known around the globe for perfor ming pedimiracles. Through his signature high-heel makeover, Dr. Blitz has helped thousands of people walk pretty and pain-free, without sacrificing their shoe collections. A lot of us have bunions. By current estimates, more than half of American women deal with the unsightly protrusions, and many don’t understand what they are. A bunion may look like a growth of some sort, but it’s actually a bone that’s shifted out of place. “It’s really the misalignment of the big-toe joint pushing out on the skin from underneath that causes the bony prominence,” says Dr. Blitz. Why are half of us plagued by the big-toe bulges? Well, some of us can thank our genes. But the bulk of us should also thank the towering heels that pair so well with our jeans. Developing bunions isn’t a nature-versus-nurture issue. Some people will get bunions despite donning flats, perhaps because they’re biologically predisposed to the condition, while others will wind up with bunions purely because they worship at the Louboutin

altar. Either way, sauntering through life on slanted soles doesn’t help. Walking in high heels means walking at a steep pitch, which strains the ball of the foot. As a result, toe joints (usually the big toe and sometimes the pinkie toe) get moved and bunions form. Let’s not pretend flats and heels are in the same ballpark. Highheel shoes have been a source of grace, glamour, and extra inches for hundreds of years. But the uber-tall stilettos that we hold so dear only surfaced around 1950, when Christian Dior and Roger Vivier unveiled the iconic Louis Heel. So, Dr. Blitz doesn’t make patients give up their pumps. Instead, he upgrades their feet to fit their footwear. Through patented surgical techniques, Dr. Blitz changed the game of bunion removal, traditionally a difficult procedure. For years, there was no “right” way to fix bunions; surgeons used hundreds of operations, most of which have faded into history. Even today, however, commonly used procedures leave patients immobilized for six weeks. Not so with Dr. Blitz’s signature procedure, Bunionplasty®. Dr. Blitz invented an implantabe titanium device that holds bones steady and conforms to the anatomy of a patient’s foot. Thanks to the revolutionary design, patients can walk out of surgery — literally. No bulky cast, no crutches, no forced bedrest. Instead, they’re on the mend and on their feet. And they’re not worried about hitting the beach with exposed toes. We all deserve summer vibes, from dawn to dusk, head to toe. Let Dr. Blitz get you yours.

Trifecta Med Spa: CoolSculpting By Winter Fairchild

W

ho loves popsicles? I certainly still do! It’s interesting to note that CoolSculpting — a procedure that melts away resistant fat — actually has a connection to these icy treats. Doctors observed that kids enjoying popsicles began to form dimples. The dimpled areas had been exposed to the highest amount of cold, which caused fat cells to be permanently flushed out of the body. Doctors dubbed this phenomenon “popsicle panniculitis” and it was the inspiration behind CoolSculpting, an effective, FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure. “The patient can see results,” says Dr. Edward Fruitman, the medical director of Trifecta Med Spa. The applicator freezes fat on the stomach, love handles, thighs, or double chin. The fat crystallizes because it is so sensitive to cold. Only fat cells are affected in this process. Unlike trying to target an area through exercise or diet, CoolSculpting gives practitioners a precise, measurable tool that can be applied to the specific target area. “Eating right is very important but there are many women now who want to keep their curves, but emphasize a thin stomach. Coolsculpting is great for that,” says Dr. Fruitman. “Also there are women who cannot lose their fat despite efforts in the gym and with a nutritionist, so this is also a great technique for them. Especially if they want to avoid an invasive procedure.” With cool sculpting there is no downtime, no needles, and no incisions. For those who are afraid to go under the knife, the procedure is ideal and now there’s even a new

applicator to treat the area under the chin. Also newer technology promises new applicators that will be able to deliver the same or better results in half the time: 35 minutes instead of 60. Most clients say it’s painless. At the most, you just feel a slight discomfort. “We have a relaxing room with Netflix options. It’s important to feel distracted so the time can melt away while the fat does as well,” Dr. Fruitman confides. “We like our patients to be very happy with their experience of the treatment itself as well as the results.” The staff at Trifecta Med Spa are charming, helpful, and very informed. This writer highly recommends going to their beautiful offices for treatment.

The Male Bag – Dashing dads By Anthony Michael

Tongs for the grill? Um, no. A USB cord woven from golden threads? He’ll lose it. A bottle of rare Scotch? Yes! But, why not something unique? Here are our recommendations for helping you bring out the best in him this Father’s Day.

Martial Vivot martialvivot.com

You know that feeling when you check into a hotel room and quite unexpectedly discover the bathroom toiletries are so good that you begin hoarding them? Martial Vivot’s collection of men’s hair and facial products elicits that same emotion. Named for the proprietor of the samenamed men’s salon at 39 W 54th (which, by the way, has been called the “best” in the city by GQ and New York Magazine), Martial Vivot is the epitome of luxury. Start with the shampoo and conditioner ($91 for the gift set). Free of the additives that tend to shorten the lifecycle of growth, the shampoo’s constellation of natural ingredients balances sebum (your scalp’s essential oil), stops dandruff in its tracks, improves color retention, and otherwise energizes the noggin for optimal performance. Finish with Martial Vivot’s Creme ($28). It shines: literally. Plant oils ensure this with the added benefit of eliminating fly-aways and frizz. A collection of vitamins and other things that sound super healthy keep the shafts strong.

Journeymen wearejourneymen.com

Admit it. Grown men shouldn’t have to smell like freshmen. Problem is, most guys pluck their deodorant from the shelf with the reckless abandon of a pimply plebe. Journeymen began after one SoCal surfer admitted to his friend that he had recently been accused of smelling like cheap drugstore deodorant (shocking). This encounter inspired the friends to transform an overlooked category into a sophisticated alternative that would elevate every guy’s dopp kit. That means you too, Montauk. Choose from the stick ($18) or the spray ($18). Both offer an all-natural blend of odor suppressors highlighted by cypress leaf and a smoky red cedar. When it comes to feeling (and smelling) fresh, there’s no need to invoke the kid in any guy.

Croota croota.com

These days, you’ll be hard pressed to find your guy a pair of underwear that reconciles style, sex appeal, and comfort. Thank god for the Aussies. Croota’s extensive collection crosses over just about every fit and cut you can imagine, and every one of them makes you look and feel both naughty and nice. For extreme comfort, go with a seamless boxer brief ($23.99). Really, he’ll forget he’s wearing undies altogether: extra stretch and more space where he needs it. For a more traditional fit, the Tartan criss-cross ($27.99) offers a simple waistband and trim that keep the focus on the pattern . . . and maybe the package?

Baxter of California baxterofcalifornia.com If your guy’s a veteran of the Baxter brand, tell him to clean up with the rich, luxurious lather of the new vitamin cleansing bar ($42 for a set of three or sold individually), available in three signature scents: bergamot & pear, Italian lime & pomegranate, and flora & cassis. Think he’d like to give Baxter a preliminary spin? Baxter of California’s travel kit comes with travel-friendly, leak resistant, and TSA-approved bottles of their best sellers. Whether jetting off to far corners of the world or around the corner to the gym, he’ll move freely with Baxter of California essentials in tow. ($50) Hey, it’s a great excuse for you to plan a trip.

Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Energized lacoste.com What will become of Rio? That’s the question on every international sport fan’s mind this summer. Eh, let it go and bring the games to your guy. Lacoste recently introduced Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Energized (interesting name for a fragrance, no?), a new limited-edition scent to pay tribute to the iconic brand’s sporting heritage and passion for the game. Fiery ginger and cool mint notes complement cedar leaf and citrus. You’ll definitely cheer.

Timoteo timoteo.net Here’s a tip: if your guy’s got good thighs, don’t let him hide them behind a dreary pair of board shorts or dumpy khakis. Timoteo’s Daytona short ($60) is a lightweight, summery canvas that falls generously above the knee, and does a great job accentuating all assets. Available this summer in four hot new colors, the Daytona fits true to size. That said, guys with bigger than normal legs, quads, or butt, be sure to order one size up.

A new you: conversations with Dr . Stephen T. Greenberg By Mamie O’Halloran

D

r. Stephen T. Greenberg, a well-known and well-respected name in cosmetic surgery, finds that each year the influx of new patients after Memorial Day increases. Before the summer gets into full swing, consider making an appointment for a consultation. What’s hot going into this summer season? In a recent interview with this magazine, Dr. Greenberg said that his most requested service is breast augmentation — especially for Dr. Greenberg’s ultra-popular (and one-ofa-kind) 24-hour rapid-recovery breast augmentation. “In the past, recovery might have required considerable downtime and discomfort in the days following surgery,” says Dr. Greenberg, a nationally renowned cosmetic plastic surgeon based in Southampton, Woodbury, and Manhattan. “After my mini-incision rapid-recovery breast augmentation procedure, not only are patients pleased with their new and natural look, but they recover quickly and easily.” With significantly shorter recovery time, Dr. Greenberg’s patients are often back to their normal activities within 24 hours of surgery. In addition, Dr. Greenberg reports that new implant types allow him and his team to do what he calls “customizable breast augmentation,” where his team can specifically match an implant to the patient’s anatomy. “The new tools bring us to perfection more efficiently than ever before, and the amount of time it takes caters perfectly to hectic and demanding schedules,” says Dr. Greenberg. “These days, you can expect to be back at work or back on the beach in a matter of days.” Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, Woodbury Office

Dr. Greenberg is a nationally recognized board-certified plastic surgeon, with offices in Southampton and Woodbury, Long Island; on Park Avenue in Manhattan; and in Boca Raton, Florida. He is exceptionally well known and is a frequent guest on television and radio broadcasts, with featured appearances on Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Dr. Oz, and CBS Evening News. He is often cited in print as an expert, hosts his own weekly radio show, and publishes a weekly newspaper column. Dr. Greenberg was also voted one of the Best Cosmetic Surgeons on LI for several consecutive years (LI Press). greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com Social Life

Emma slater Uninhibited By Christine Montanti Photography by Vital Agibalow for Hensel USA

My very first conversation with Emma Slater is over the telephone. It is late in the evening in early spring and she is on the East Coast visiting family. Enamored with her undeniable talent as a professional dancer on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, I am eager to learn more about her celebrity. We are finalizing the details of her upcoming cover shoot and, needless to say, Emma is an absolute delight to speak with. “Hi, Christine,” Emma says enthusiastically. “Thank you so much for this opportunity!” Immediately I am mesmerized by her proper English accent. Together we begin to go over the timeline of the photo shoot and later we speak about her current trip to New York. Emma explains how she is traveling with her boyfriend, Sasha Farber, who is also a professional dancer on the hit TV show. She tells me how in the midst of their busy family trip to the Northeast, they have arranged a number of coaching sessions with aspiring ballroom dancers in several local dance studios. Emma explains that they are also scheduled to perform at various charity events while in town. I comment to Emma on the telephone how pleased I am to hear that she and Sasha are back together. I had the pleasure of working with Sasha a year ago for an editorial feature in

this magazine, and he was so much fun to collaborate with. Emma confesses to me, “Sasha and I have been back together for about a year now. It’s funny how you can take a break from each other and then you’re able to really put things into perspective. It was really quite cool that we did that. Sasha and I have had a relationship for five years and he is actually the reason why I am on the show. I owe that to him. He arranged for me to have a meeting with the producers so that we can work together and it was so sweet of him and it worked out really well.” I arrive on location early in the morning the day of the photo shoot. It is a beautiful warm spring day. I am pleased to see that the hair and makeup stylists are already set up and awaiting Emma’s arrival. The location is a private estate that is absolutely breathtaking. The residence is situated on what seems to be endless acres of property and it is surrounded by a natural fence that consists of the most majestic trees I have ever seen. Inside the home there is an enormous contemporary kitchen that we are using for our staging area. In the background I hear a gentleman saying hello to someone who has just knocked on the door. As I turn to see, in walks Emma.

fe a t ures Conservatively dressed in a striped blouse, blazer, and denim jeans, Emma politely makes her way over to me. We greet each other and then I take a moment to admire her natural beauty. I notice her curly blonde hair is now very straight. It’s cut in a way that happens to frame her face quite beautifully. She has on just a touch of makeup and her skin looks absolutely radiant. I offer Emma a cup of hot coffee as she takes a seat in the hair stylist’s chair. We immediately start conversing about her experience on DWTS. “Eight seasons ago I joined the troupe of DWTS, Emma tells me. “The troupe choreographs many of the artists’ performances, especially at the start of the episode and then again at the end. Three seasons in, I became a professional dancer on the show and I was paired with a celebrity. My first partner was Bill Engvall. He was a blue collar comedian and he was loved so much by the audience watching at home. We actually made it all the way to the finals. He was so charismatic and such a loveable man that people really warmed up to his personality. They found him to be the most relatable; therefore, we did really well.” I ask Emma if it is an exhausting experience having a job as a professional dancer on the show. Emma takes a sip of her coffee, looks up at me, and says, “DWTS is very demanding. You have to decide what your partner looks good at doing and what they don’t look good at doing. It’s like you are constantly assessing the situation, and if something doesn’t work you have to change the routine.” As the stylist creates beautiful soft curls with Emma’s hair, we continue talking about the show. I ask Emma if she has encountered any difficult partners. Emma responds, “I have never had a difficult partner. Generally the celebrities really want to be on the show. It’s such a fun TV show and it is so enjoyable. It’s a really a great experience whether you are at week one, or you win the mirror ball trophy. The experience is life changing. It brings out the best in people.” Emma is finally finished with hair and the makeup artist escorts her over to a tall stool. I take a seat next to the stool at a massive dining table so we can continue talking. The makeup is spread out on a dazzling countertop adjacent to the table that is made out of ice quartz. I have never seen a countertop so beautiful. The homeowner explained to me that the ice quartz has healing properties in it which can help to purify your body and the environment. After the makeup artist shows Emma some photographs of the makeup style we are going for today, Emma begins to tell me about work she was involved in prior to DWTS. “I was in a production, that was sort of the London version of Broadway,” Emma explains. “I actually did Broadway in 2009. The production was called Burn the Floor. That is where I first met other professional dancers, such as Sharna Burgess, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and Sasha Farber. Quite a few profes-

sional dancers from DWTS originated from Burn the Floor. I am really grateful to that show because it got me into a world tour. Traveling is something that I really like to do. I really believe that you should see the world before you leave it, and the opportunity to travel has been amazing. I absolutely love it.” While the makeup artist is doing the finishing touches on Emma, she tells me about a feature film she starred in. Emma enthusiastically explains, “I had the opportunity to do the movie Mamma Mia! 10 years ago. I was 18 when we filmed it in North London. I had been on tour when the agent that I was working with called me and said I had to come to this audition. My agent explained that they were looking for someone just like me. I ended up leaving the tour to do the movie. At the time I didn’t know that Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth were part of the movie. When Meryl walked into rehearsal I nearly died. It’s a musical and there is this part in the movie where Meryl does this split in the air and she was amazing. She has the best work ethic.” Emma even sang on the soundtrack. She insists that she wouldn’t go so far as to say that she is a singer, but growing up she did get involved with musical theatre. It is now time to get Emma dressed for her first look so we can begin shooting. As we walk to the dressing area toward the grand entrance of the house, Emma describes to me what her career aspirations are for the future. She explains that during the live broadcast of Dancing with the Stars, she hosts All Access, which broadcasts live during the show. “It is kind of like live streaming,” Emma says. “They have different cohosts each week. A lot of people from the show do it. Hosting is something I found a love for. During the off season, if we are not touring with the Dancing with the Stars production, we have the opportunity to do some hosting. For me, hosting is a passion I found out about later on in life. You can be yourself and be natural. I think it would be really fun. I have never been passionate about anything else other than dancing. I definitely want to put the focus on my career toward hosting in the future. Wouldn’t that be the most amazing job in the world: to travel and to host?”

BRING IT ON . . . By Christopher London Gregory Partanio and ManhattanSociety.com

Bring It On At first I didn’t have the will to carry on Illusions in my mind Like that picture when you feel you can’t go on Like you’ve been left behind Life goes on, now Take me to that funky place where you and I were born. Carry on, now Psychedelic tendencies of love will bring it on Bring it on Bring it on, Bring it on Don’t wait until tomorrow . . . ~ SEAL (1994)

O

n any given day, the news — whether local, national, or international — can give us something to feel profoundly unsettled about. Because we live in turbulent times, it’s easy to lose sight of the meaningful collaborative work being done by leaders in our public and private sectors that may not just sustain our civilization but advance it dramatically in the coming years. Negative things will always happen but to focus on them to the exclusion of the positive alliances, collaborations, and partnerships between business, government, and community leaders may give a wrong impression of our destiny as a people and how we can effect change. It is important to remind ourselves that when we collaborate, partner, and align, we contribute toward making possibilities for humanity endless.

‘Impossible’ is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing. This is a toast to those of you who in the face of challenges say, “Bring it on . . . don’t wait until tomorrow.” Referenced below are the deeds of some notable folks working today to create a better world tomorrow.

HEALTHCORPS LED BY LISA OZ and DR. mehmet OZ HOST LARGEST FUNDRAISER YET TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD OBESITY HealthCorps is a national nonprofit organization that gives teens tools to improve physical and mental health so they can learn to live more productive and happier lives. NIGHTLIFE By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan

Summer Movies

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans rock in Captain America: Civil War, which kicked off the blockbuster season with a tongue-in-cheek series of bangs and bombs in the Marvel Comics’ hit. Scarlett Johansson, who plays hard-hitting Black Widow confesses, “I don’t do damsel in distress very well. It’s hard for me to play a victim.” Sadly Johnny Depp is being dragged through the muck by his money grubbing, bisexual wife, the mediocre actress Amber Heard, who is trying to steal the spotlight while Johnny still shines as the Mad Hatter in the eye-popping 3D spectacle Alice Through the Looking Glass by director Tim Burton. Depp said, “To be honest, if I’d been asked to play Alice I would have.” Anne Hathaway returns as the White Queen and said, “I’ve been lucky. My only jobs have been babysitting and acting.” And that’s why some people “hate” her. George Clooney and Emily Meade score big in the action-packed Money Monster. Clooney said, “As you get older, you start to simplify things; it’s better than the other option, which is being dead.” The fast-paced film is directed by Jodie Foster and captures both the shady shenanigans on Wall Street and the behind-the-scenes excitement of TV. Jodie Foster said, “We’re not saying in this film that the system is wrong. But what we are saying is that there are abuses to the system that are built into human nature.” And exactly when did Jodie first figure that out?

The Southampton Animal Shelter Interview with Jonathan M c Cann the board president of the Southampton Animal Shelter By Jean Shafiroff

T

he Southampton Animal Shelter, located in Hampton Bays, is ranked among the top 10 percent of shelters in the United States in terms of care for animals, adoption rates, and training. Jean Shafiroff, who has been a significant fund-raiser and donor for the shelter, and has chaired its gala for the last four years, will again chair this year’s gala on July 16. She recently interviewed John McCann.

The Southampton Animal Shelter is called a ‘no-kill’ shelter. Jonathan, how do you define that? Dogs at the shelter are not euthanized except in rare cases of severe medical, psychological, or incurable illnesses. The last thing we want to do is euthanize a dog. This is rarely ever done.

That is a shame because pit bulls were the hero dogs of World War I. Sadly, the public perceives pit bulls as an aggressive breed. Jean, I know you own and have rescued pit bulls so you know that this is generally not the case. They are not necessarily aggressive dogs. Proper behavior has to be taught. What can shelters do about dogs that haven’t been adopted? They need to find new ways to help them. Most of these dogs can lead happy and productive lives out of shelters. Here is a perfect example. We had two pit bulls at the shelter. One was here for five years and the other for a year. We decided to find jobs for them. We found a trainer who was able to teach them how to sniff for bombs or drugs. The five-year-old dog did so well that he was immediately adopted by a police department in Georgia.

Jonathan McCann

But all this requires training. A shelter has to be adept at finding good trainers. Playing for Life is a program that our shelter encourages. This program enables dogs to play in groups with trainers every day. The program helps to socialize dogs and keeps them calm. Some dogs are at the shelter for a year or more. Why is this the case? The dogs that are adopted quickly are usually the small ones. They are usually puppies or pure breeds. Unfortunately, dogs that weigh over 40 pounds, mixed breeds, and pit bulls often remain here for a much longer period of time. About 35 percent of the dogs that are at the shelter for long periods are usually pit bull mixes.

society Tell is about the gala? The gala will be held on July 16, at a beautiful private oceanfront estate on Gin Lane in Southampton. We will honor El Faro de los Animals, whose purpose is to alleviate the overpopulation of homeless dogs in Puerto Rico. Over 300,000 stray dogs reside there. The gala promises to be a fabulous party. Music will be provided by Alex Donner and the dinner will be catered by Robbins Wolfe. Last year’s event was completely sold out and we expect the same to occur this year. The Goring Hotel London, England By Joe Alexander

ost know The Goring hotel as the place where Kate Middleton spent the night before her wedding to Prince William in 2011— the spot where the world first glimpsed her Alexander McQueen wedding gown. But The Goring’s royal connection goes much deeper; in fact, it is the first London hotel to be awarded a Royal Warrant from the Queen for its service to Her Majesty’s household, and displays her coat of arms. Located in Belgravia, just a shilling’s throw from Buckingham Palace, The Goring has been an annex for the royal family since it opened its doors over a century ago. In 1945, King George VI, Queen consort Elizabeth, and their daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, celebrated the end of WWII with breakfast at The Goring, The Goring Hotel, London. and a few years later, Princess Elizabeth had the hotel’s pastry chef make Prince Charles’s Christening cake. During Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, the hotel was used as another wing of the palace, taking in royal guests from around the world.

Michelin Star It’s not just proximity to the royal palace that has earned The Goring its gleaming reputation. This year, the Forbes Travel Guide gave it a five-star rating, a category that includes other exclusive London hotels like The Dorchester, The Connaught, and The Lanesborough. Also this year, the Dining Room, the hotel’s elegant restaurant, received its first Michelin star, with

the guide describing the executive chef Shay Cooper’s cuisine as “a really pleasing mix of British classics and lighter, more modern dishes, all prepared with great skill and understanding.” Breakfast in the sunny Dining Room — which boasts illuminated Swarovski crystal flowering branches — was a daily treat.

The Goring Family After 106 years, this hotel, which has been in the Goring family for four generations, underwent a top to bottom renovation. The lobby’s hand-painted wallpaper features a unicorn Social Life

with the royal insignia to symbolize the fact that this is the only hotel in London with a Royal Warrant from the Queen. HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, seven months pregnant at the time, came and painted the mane of this mystical creature, which made for a creative and historic ribbon-cutting moment. The whimsical wallpaper, by Fromental, took four artists eight weeks to paint. It features gorillas, monkeys, seals, polar bears, and more; the animals represent different members of the Goring family, as well as members of the loyal staff. The renovation, carried out by a team of renowned designers (David Linley, Nina Campbell, Tim Gosling, and Russell Sage) extended to every guest room, and even the garden was landscaped anew. Upon unveiling the newly refurbished spaces, the fourth-generation owner, Jeremy Goring, said, “The whole hotel is gleaming for our 105th birthday and the new front hall is gorgeous. It’s what we are all about. It’s luxurious and glamorous, it recognizes our past, but it’s also sophisticated and very contemporary. And most important of all, I think it will make our guests smile.”

Over a Century of History Built in 1910 by Otto Goring, the great grandfather of the present owner, the hotel has been family-run throughout its

100-plus years of operation, and is the only five-star hotel in London still owned by the family that built it. With only 69 luxurious suites and rooms, The Goring is affectionately known as a “baby grand,” and its rooms and suites were stateof-the-art from the beginning, with en-suite baths and central heating, a first for the Edwardian era.

Award-Winning Afternoon Tea Once inside the hotel, you’ll discover The Goring Gardens, one of the largest private gardens in the capital, enclosed by crisp hedges. Wander around and discover The Nook and The Cranny, two secret “green rooms” with wicker furniture and open brick fireplaces. The Gardens and the Lounge Bar are perfect settings to enjoy the award-winning afternoon tea. This summer you can celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday with a special tea that includes Her Majesty’s favorite fruit cake jampacked with juicy raisins, sultanas, and cherries that have been marinated in a heady combination of rum, cognac, and brandy. Ooh la la! In a playful and affectionate spin on the many portraits of the monarch, The Goring has a fashioned a choux bun in Her Majesty’s image, filled with vanilla butter cream, rose flavored crème chiboust, topped with a fluffy pastry crown, and sporting a royally crimson rose petal robe. Yummy!

every night. But watch where you step: there’s a larger version on the floor that you can use as a footrest. Yet another clever trick is that the TV pops up out of the desk, so one minute you’re writing on your laptop and then with a push of a button, presto, you’ve got the BBC giving you all the news.

‘For Kids’ Eyes Only’

The Goring’s Belgravia Suite.

Prince Harry The red-lacquered bar and lounge sports an array of empty gold picture frames, as do the hotel’s hallways. The clue to “why” resides in the frame containing a white glove symbolizing that the Pink Panther has struck and whisked all the paintings away. The original panther, Peter Sellers, was a regular here and inspired this witty touch that adds to the old-school charm of this quintessentially British hotel. This chic lounge has even attracted Prince Harry and his aristocratic posse of pals.

“When I was a little boy I used to love visiting my dad at work. Now my children are regular visitors to the hotel, too,” says Jeremy Goring. “Seen through the eyes of a child especially, The Goring is a magical place; they all love our new footmen in their red coats, and our huge private garden is a great place to let off steam.” The hotel’s intimate luxury extends even to its youngest guests, who will find a famous Goring cuddly “Baaa-bara” sheep of their own, as well as a “For Kids’ Eyes Only:” a pack with their Goring passport, to keep a personal record of their stay, and to collect stamps from each area of the hotel. The chef even invites children down to the hotel’s kitchen to decorate their own cookies and cakes. And let them know if you are bringing an infant: your room will be stocked with a basket of essentials, including lotions, changing mats, bath toys, and bath mats. A welcome touch for busy parents. Bring the family from £750, or $1,079, per night.

The Goring’s Mascot During a recent stay, our cozy room at The Goring was done in a golden hue with brocade wallpaper, wood accents, and burgundy trim, and had a romantic private terrace with a round cast-iron table. This setting overlooking the gardens was perfect for tea or cocktails, which arrived automatically at 5:30 every evening. A red-jacketed footman delivered a silver tray with a sliver shaker, ice bucket, and glass vials filled with all the ingredients to make a Manhattan. This is a fun touch. Rather than mix the drinks for you, they provide a menu card explaining the origins of the drink and how to mix it yourself. It’s a playful way to start your evening. (For guests with children in tow, there are also mocktail ingredients so the little ones can mix their own. They’ve thought of everything! Another amusing touch is the presence of The Goring’s mascot: you’ll find a little sheep, stuffed of course, placed on your bed

of the hotel’s five suites. Quite simply, their duties are to do anything their clients require, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. “In the days of Downton Abbey, footmen were something of a luxury and therefore a status symbol,” says the managing director, David Morgan-Hewitt. “Footmen performed a less essential role than the cook, maid, or even the butler, and were part of only the grandest households. And since a footman was for show as much as for use, a tall footman was more highly prized than a short one, and good looks, including well-turned legs, which were shown off by the traditional footman’s dress of stockings worn below knee breeches, were an advantage.” The very first duty carried out by one of The Goring footmen was to present HRH the Duchess of Cambridge with a velvet cushion, upon which was a sable artist’s brush for those finishing touches on the handpainted wallpaper in the newly renovated Front Hall. Spencer House By Joe Alexander

Spencer House, London.

HRH Princess Diana This is the house that love built; so it’s understandable that the couples Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild and Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdock both decided to give their respective wedding parties at Spencer House. This magnificent 18thcentury “pile” is owned by the late Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, and is the last remaining private palace in London. It began in 1756 as a love nest by John, the 1st Earl Spencer for his 18-year-old bride, Georgiana Poyntz. The couple married secretly during a ball marking his coming of age at Althrop, still in the Spencer family seat. HRH Princess Diana is buried on a small island there. The young lovers were both exceedingly wealthy and the diamond buckles on his wedding shoes were said to have set him back $50K, so a proper house in town was called for. Lord Spencer chose John Vardy as his original architect and he designed the exterior façades of the magnificent mansion. In 1758 Spencer switched directions and hired James “Athenian” Stuart who created the astonishing neo-classical interiors with its Greek details that remain today. The house was completed in 1766

and immediately declared one of the finest houses that had ever been built in London. In 1986 the financier Jacob Rothschild, the 4th Baron Rothschild and a cousin of Nicky Hilton’s husband, James, secured a 96-year lease and paid to restore the house, state rooms, and garden to their original splendor. Lord Rothschild uses the house’s upper floors as his offices. Queen Elizabeth and her prime ministers have traditionally gone to Spencer House for quiet talks away from the gossips

Kathy and Rick Hilton gave a reception for “Jicky” aka Nicki and James Rothschild, before their wedding, in the Great Room. It was attended by the Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and Denmark; Anne Hearst and Jay Mclnerney; Chelsea Clinton; Naomi Campbell; and Nicky’s siblings, Barron and Paris Hilton. The Palace, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington

Mick Jagger’s ex-lover and the mother of four of his children had both her civil marriage to Rupert Murdock and their wedding party here. Jerry greeted Sir Michael Caine, her children, and assorted media moguls wearing a 20-carat marquise-cut diamond ring set in a platinum band worth $5 million, which puts the first Lord Spencer’s shoe buckles to shame. Jerry confided that this was actually the first engagement ring she’d ever gotten. The historic house was festooned with hundreds of white flowers, including tulips, amaryllis, roses, and gypsophila, which looked lovely in the art and antiqued bedecked first floor rooms that originally took eight years to complete. The priceless paintings and furniture are on loan from the Royal Collection, The Tate Gallery, and The Victoria and Albert Museum. You can book Spencer House for $28,000 a night.

Sexy Fish London’s Hot New Restaurant By Joe Alexander

Berkeley Square Prince Harry; David Beckham and his son, Brooklyn; Matt Damon and the Mrs; and Prince Andrew’s ex, Sarah Ferguson, are among the boldfaced names who have trekked to Berkeley Square to experience Sexy Fish, London’s new culinary and celebrity mecca. What makes this restaurant sexy is the décor and the lighting — everyone looks good in this grand, softly illuminated, art-bedecked space that seats 200. The artist Damien Hirst, whose controversial work of a shark suspended in formaldehyde sold for $12 million in 2005, has created two bright blue bronze mermaids for the bar, and a heroic bronze panel featuring a mermaid and a shark. The architect Frank Gehry, who is responsible for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and New York by Gehry on Spruce Street created a light installation that recreates a school of

swimming fish over the bar. It took 19 of his iconic fish lamps to mimic this spectacular effect. He also made a gigantic black crocodile that stretches across the wall over a raised tier of banquettes, which is the prime seating area for those who want to see and be seen. Prince Harry was in twice one week, with a different girl each time. The hot spot, which has an abstract ceiling mural by Michael Roberts and enough Esmeralda onyx and marble from Iran to replicate the Taj Mahal, was designed by Martin Brudnizki, who is also responsible for the interiors of Annabel’s and The Ivy. The night I was there, the crowd was trés glam. I spotted an attractive couple who couldn’t stop kissing between every sip and nibble — I couldn’t determine if it was the oysters and Champagne, the glow of Gehry’s fish, or, rather, if the fellow had spiked her drink.

The Coral Reef Room Although Sexy Fish, which is owned by the businessman Richard Caring, seeks to emulate the sensual ambiance of André Balazs’s Chiltern Firehouse, I wouldn’t throw away the Firehouse’s private reservation number if you are lucky enough to have it. That’s not to say this Fish isn’t worth sampling, but nothing is going to replace Balazs’s classic take on what an international boite should be. The waiters at Sexy Fish automatically serve edamame at the table instead of bread, which was a welcome and healthy choice. The British-born executive chef, Ben Orpwood, offers up a tantalizing menu. I had the spicy sea scallops followed by a trio of sardines with cherry tomatoes. This dish was light, refreshing, and tasty. My pal had native extra-meaty oysters, followed by a perfectly cooked Chilean sea bass. Other choices included

avocado maki rolls, seared salmon, sushi rice, smoked eel, and baked Alaskan crab and scallops with jalapeño sauce and pickled green apples. And the chef hasn’t forgotten the carnivores: Wagyu beef and perfectly pink lamb chops are both on the carte. For dessert, try the cinnamon doughnuts with chocolate sauce and citrus curd or the mango mochi with mandarin and jasmine sorbet. Yummy! Downstairs is a private room redolent of caviar, expensive wines, and secrets. It seats 48 and is called The Coral Reef Room because it houses two of the largest live coral reef tanks in the world. This is a fun choice for a private party or where you can impress your Russian or Chinese clients. sexyfish.com 020 3764 2000

MEET THE artist: RON BURKHARDT By Kevin Berlin

Social Life presents an exclusive interview with Ron Burkhardt Ron Burkhardt was born in Jackson, Michigan, and lives and works in New York City, Quogue, and Palm Beach. Burkhardt is the originator of three distinct, contemporary, abstract art genres: Notism (primal, hieroglyphic scrawls) since 2001; Earth Art (organic color palettes) since 2009; and LetterScapes (bold, architectural word forms) since 2013. Burkhardt has been honored at international biennales, has lectured at museums, had over 60 exhibitions, and has won over 200 creative awards, including a Medici medal in Florence. Prior to starting his artistic pursuits in 2001, he was founder/CEO/creative director of the blue-chip New York ad agency Burkhardt & Christy, but 9/11 altered his trajectory. His work now resides in many private and public collections, including those of the late Muhammad Ali, Robert Hernreich, Sylvia Hemingway, Shaquille O’Neal, Michael and Benita Romano III, Phyllis George, Bruce Helander, and Rolf Heitmeyer.

Tell me about your new work and projects. The paintings I’m doing now are called LetterScapes and they evolved out of Notism, which I founded back in the late 1990s. Notism is kind of multi-tasking memory fragments, hieroglyphic in style, a lot of scribbled gestural work that grew out of my career in the ad world. I had an ad agency in New York for many years. I was so consumed with keeping up with my daily schedule that I was always making elaborate notes. And as I did stuff, I crossed it out, and people started telling me: “This is so unique, kind of Basquiat-like.” So I had a solo show in SoHo, spring of 2001. That was my first, and probably was going to be it until 9/11 hit. After that I wanted to pursue art long-term and do something more exciting, meaningful, and enduring than witty TV spots.

Ron Burkhardt, LetterScapes KOS, oil and acrylic on birch wood, 18 in. x 24 in., 2016.

Some of those works were just at the SCOPE Art fair in Miami and also at Art Southampton last year. Yes, I was a featured artist at Art Hamptons, showing with Vertu Fine Art out of Boca Raton and they had the LetterScapes on a huge wall. Then I went out the next week to Art Southampton with Leonard Tourné Gallery/New York. And in December I was showing at Art Basel’s SCOPE fair with Modern Masters Fine Art. The Notism is very intricate, maybe cerebral in a sense, but I really enjoy making notes, and the Earth Art are huge sun-bleached outdoor canvases that don’t have much to do with words. Once I got into LetterScapes they became wildly popular, even more so than the other two genres and it’s hard not to go with the flow. But they’re much more difficult and intricate to make than just drawing, throwing paint, and high intensity action. The hard edges are incredibly time consuming: even if you start with tape, it’s never perfect and you have to go over and over it with tiny brushes. So it can take months to make one, really. The color is extremely important in LetterScapes. Yes, I love bold, primary colors. Many times I use the exact paint out of the tube just because it’s so pure and authentic. It also helps

when I go back over it later to perfect it. If I were mixing a lot of colors, it’d be a lot more difficult to keep matching it. But yes, I’m a color fanatic. I love Rothko’s color fields and Miro. Anyone who’s into color is an influence.

aRt Your early inspirations? I grew up in a country town in Michigan and we had a place called the Cascades, which was a huge colored manmade waterfall. Every summer we’d go over there and they had an orchestra playing, and fireflies, and you’d see all these cascading terraces of waters and fountains that would keep changing colors. So I was mesmerized by color at an early age, and the aesthetics of it. It was the perfect outlet. And so the show I did at Leonard Tourné in Manhattan was called City Scapes, and not only was I creating word forms of cities such as Dubai, Tokyo, London, but I was making those paintings in the colors of each country’s flag, which was such an inspired twist. So it was like a new flag for that country but it correlated to the name of the city. It was very unusual. I just loved those. The most recent cities? The show was in New York, but it included international cities of the world. Ron Burkhardt creating Earth Art. I just finished Kos and Paris. Paris is a pretty big painting and Kos is a smaller work on wood but it’s from the Greek islands where all the refugees cross. I was over there sailing last year and it was so inspiring: the color of the water, the sky, the sunsets, and then the flag. The Greek flag work took a couple of months even though it wasn’t all that big, again because of the intricacy.

every artist has a different approach. some just hide in their studios and hardly communicate with others. You travel quite a bit. How does that work for you? Well, I’ve lived in Quogue in the Hamptons for 24 years, until about a year and a half ago, when I started spending a lot of time in Palm Beach. So I spend the winters there now and come back up in the spring to the Hamptons. I throw in trips to California here and there. And once or twice a year I’ll make a trip to Europe for some reason. I’m trying to decide whether to go back. This time it would be Turkey, after an amazing trip last year. There were nine of us on a 150-foot sailboat with a crew of eight, endless wine and food, and we went to ten islands in twelve days. Of course Mykonos and Santorini, anchoring off the coast of each island. Incredible trip. One of the guys on the boat was a Greek ambassador, and he and his wife were kind of taken with the LetterScapes and talking about doing a show at the Athens Museum next year. Your time away from the studio is important and inspiring. Certainly for meeting the right people to make things happen, for exhibitions, to have shows: it definitely helps to be in motion.

MEET THE COLLECTOR: HENRY BUHL By Kevin Berlin

Social Life presents an exclusive interview with Henry Buhl, a philanthropist and art collector

enry Buhl arrived in New York City from Detroit, in 1951, and began his career working for the investment banking house of McDonnell & Co. In 1961, he moved to Geneva after being hired by IOS Ltd to manage mutual funds. It was during his time in Switzerland that he met his now former wife, MarieFrance, and had three children, Christian, Alexandra, and Anthony. In 1973, he returned to New York and continued his career in investment banking. In 1980, he quit the financial world to become a wedding photographer. In 1992, Henry formed The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE), a 501(c)3 organization devoted to helping homeless men and

women throughout New York City. It provides job training, work experience, and a lifetime support network to help program participants achieve their goals and establish economic independence. He continues to work at ACE to this day. Henry Buhl once owned a collection of over 1,100 photographs with the common theme of the hand and representing the entire history of the medium. The collection had been exhibited at many international museums, including the Guggenheim in 2005. In December 2012, Henry sold most of the collection at Sotheby’s. Starting in 2005 and continuing up to the present day, Henry has collected sculptures of hands, exhibiting them in his indoor sculpture garden within his SoHo residence.

ART That’s quite a jump! Theoretically, my $75,000 jumped to $200,000. Wow! Having been a mutual fund manager earlier in life, I said, This is a better investment than any of my stock picks. For the next six months, I scoured NYC galleries to look at hand photographs before I started to collect. At first I only bought well-known photographers like Mapplethorpe, Irving Penn, Avedon, and Chuck Close, although Close was better known as a painter. I collected for two to three years on my own before hiring Marianne Courville, who knew much more about the history of photography as she studied the subject at the Rhode Island School of Design. Together we decided to collect the history of photography through the subject of hands. Our earliest photo was by William Henry Fox Talbot of Lord Byron’s handwritten stanza from his Ode to Napoleon, taken in 1839. By 1996, just four years after I started collecting, we were given our first show at the Thread Waxing Space in SoHo. From SoHo the show traveled to nine other galleries and universities before the Whitney Museum approached us to mount a major show in 2001.

met. Max asked to come to SoHo to review the photographs the Whitney curators had selected for the show. So far so good. Once here, Max pointed out that about 43 percent of the choices were non-American photographers. Max stated that the Whitney could display only American photographers as the Whitney showed only American artists. He said we could still put on a show of American photographers. I said no because my collection depicted the history of photography and that the earliest photographers were English (William Henry Fox Talbot) and French (Louis Daguerre). Of course! I was most disappointed and thought the world was coming to an end. About two weeks later, Tom Krens, the Guggenheim director called me and said, ‘I understand you had a little trouble at the Whitney?’ He said he would like to send out two curators to see my collection with the idea of giving me a show at the Guggenheim. Three weeks later he called back to confirm that they decided to give me a major exhibition. Actually it turned out to be a blessing in disguise that the Whitney turned me down as the Guggenheim had four times the paid visitors as the Whitney. After a most successful show in 2004, the Guggenheim decided to send the show to the Guggenheim in Bilboa, Spain; Essen, Germany; and St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia. Before traveling abroad, Jenny Blessing, the Guggenheim’s photography curator, and I did question-and-answer exhibition tours with different American groups. We always left a few unanswered topics so that the audience would get involved with questions. When doing the same routine at the Guggenheim in Bilboa with 200 in the audience, not one person raised their hand. At the next stop in Essen, within two and half minutes into our routine, questions Social Life

were asked and one and a half hours of banter took place. St. Petersburg was like the Bilboa experience and Moscow equivalent to Essen. After the collection returned from Europe, it was immediately sent to the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach, but this time with hand sculptures. So your sculpture collection was already on its way? I decided to switch to collecting hand sculptures at around the time of the Guggenheim show, as I felt the photography collection had reached its goal of being a cross-section of the history of the medium and the exhibition marked a good transition point. As the sculpture collection expanded with Man Rays, Picassos, Botero, Rodins, the curators from the

museums wanted more sculptures in their shows. After touring America, the collection took off for Asia for exciting shows in Korea, Taiwan, and China with 28 sculptures and the best photographs. It was a very interactive show also because the sculptures are so dimensional as opposed to the flat works. The show was much more interesting with the addition of the sculptures. When the show was in Asia, Ray Merritt, a lawyer and advisor, suggested that I sell the photographic collection. As most of the better pieces were owned by the Buhl Foundation, the idea was brilliant as all the proceeds from the sale would benefit charities, such as ACE, to help the Social Life

ART because we find that ACE obtains better results with more education. ACE is a 100 percent privately funded organization. Its income has increased from $1,800,000 in 2012 to over $4,000,000 anticipated for 2016, which helps ACE take care of more homeless men and women. It’s been a great ride from collecting photographs and converting them to cash to help the underprivileged reclaim their lives. Congratulations! Any thoughts on what’s next? My plan is to collect more sculptures and expand the indoor sculpture garden, which consists of grass, trees, running water, a path and many more sculptures. Life is still exciting!

underprivileged in America. We approached Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips. All three gave us great offers but Sotheby’s offered to promote the show better than the others by sending a selection of the collection to be offered at auction, around 40 works, to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Zurich, London, and Paris — along with Ray and myself. Wow! Your collections and philanthropy work are closely linked. Can you tell a little more about ACE? In 1992, I started street cleaning organizations called the SoHo Partnership, the TriBeCa Partnership, and six other partnerships that we eventually consolidated into one organization called ACE — The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless — in 2010. Since the beginning, the objective of ACE has been to enable homeless men and women to obtain a full-time job and permanent housing through a four- to six-month training program. The training program education is our number one priority as over 40 percent of all the participants have a 6th grade education or less. When I first started it in 1992, 10 percent represented education and 90 percent cleaning communities. Today ACE’s program is 70 percent education and 30 percent cleaning communities. The percentage of education is increasing every year,

MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS By Kevin Berlin

PARRISH ART MUSEUM PRESENTS RADICAL SEAFARING — A SURVEY OF ARTIST-INITIATED, SITE-SPECIFIC WORKS ON THE WATER On view from May 8 to July 24

T

he Parrish Art Museum presents Radical Seafaring, the first museum survey of artists’ site-specific projects on the water, including journeys, actions, experiments, and performances by artists from the United States, Brazil, France, Japan, the Netherlands, and Mexico. The multidisciplinary exhibition, publication, and program initiative features twenty-five artists or collectives with works that range from artist-made vessels to documentation of creative expeditions to speculative designs for alternative communities at sea. “The increasing number of works created on the water by contemporary artists is approaching the critical mass of a movement like Land Art,” said the exhibition’s organizer,

Andrea Grover, the Century Arts Foundation curator of special projects at the Parrish. “The offshore art projects in Radical Seafaring represent a new form of expression that is especially powerful and timely as climatologists anticipate the effects of rising sea levels, changes in weather patterns, and the impact on coastal zones — especially when one considers that half the world’s population lives within 200 miles of a sea coast.” Radical Seafaring connects what Grover has termed “offshore art” with Land, Performance, and Conceptual Art of the 1960s and ’70s, a period when many artists moved the creative process outside of the studio and exhibited their work in natural and urban environments apart from traditional venues. The contemporary artists in Radical Seafaring continue the interdisciplinary and site-specific practices that began with pioneering artists of that era, such as Bas Jan Ader, Dennis Oppenheim, and Robert Smithson — all of whom are represented in the exhibition. By narrowing this vast area of inquiry to projects on the water, Radical Seafaring provides focus and clarity to widespread creative strategies that embrace the world outside. The tremendous variety, scope, and scale of the projects in Radical Seafaring lend themselves to wide-ranging representation through diverse media, including models, videos, audio recordings, and photographs that document performative and monumentally scaled projects; as well as sculptures, drawings, prints, artifacts, and installations. Among the works on view will be Swoon’s handmade raft, Old Hickory, 2009; Mark Dion’s Cabinet of Marine Debris, 2013; Bas Jan Ader’s installation In Search of the Miraculous, 1975; Simon Starling’s large format projection Autoxylopyrocycloboros, 2006; and detailed models by R. Buckminster Fuller (Triton City Model, 1980); Pedro Reyes (Floating Pyramid, 2004), and Cesar Harada (Protei 010.9 Mini Cargo, 2014).

About the Parrish Art Museum Inspired by the natural setting and artistic life of Long Island’s East End, the Parrish Art Museum illuminates the creative process and how art and artists transform our experiences and understanding of the world and how we live in it. The Museum fosters connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in residence. The Parrish is a center for cultural engagement, an inspiration and destination for the region, the nation, and the world.

An off-site project, Mary Mattingly’s houseboat, WetLand, 2014, will be docked on Sag Harbor’s Long Wharf for use in programs and workshops. The exhibition, featuring projects dating from 1968 to 2016, is organized by four themes: exploration — the quest for new experiences; liberation — self-reliance, the desire to shape one’s world, and utopian impulses; fieldwork — hands-on, methodological information-gathering about the environment; and speculation — using waterways as the stage upon which to build other realities. Radical Seafaring features artists Bas Jan Ader, Ant Farm, Atelier Van Lieshout, Scott Bluedorn, George Brecht, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Chris Burden, The Center for Land Use Interpretation, Steve Badgett and Chris Taylor, Michael Combs, Mark Dion, R. Buckminster Fuller, Cesar Harada, Constance Hockaday, Courtney M. Leonard, Marie Lorenz, Mare Liberum, Mary Mattingly, Vik Muniz, Dennis Oppenheim, The PLAY, Pedro Reyes, Duke Riley, Robert Smithson, Simon Starling, and Swoon.

Sweet solace is talk of the town By Jacob Puck

n case you missed it, the Hamptons real estate market is the talk of the country. But, it’s not just real estate value that’s attracting press . . . It’s just as much about the quality of the inventory available. “The properties that we are listing this year are among some of the most exciting that we’ve ever represented,” said Erik Davidowicz, the director of advertising for Brown Harris Stevens. “This is what is inspiring to us and our clients: opportunities to find solace in grand estates in our favorite corner of the world.”

Boxwoods Hedges Lane, Sagaponack James Michael Howard, the undisputed king of Hamptons interiors, has done it again with this new masterpiece. Located south of the highway in Sagaponack and near the ocean, this 12,000-square-foot manse, on a lush 2.3+/- acres, is a home where every room has its own unique charm and is decorated with antiques, art, and custom made rugs à la Howard. A total of seven bedrooms, eight full baths, and five half baths ensure extreme comfort. The west side contains a generous junior master, guest bedroom, and a library. The second story landing has a long sitting nook overlooking the great room. There are two en suite bedrooms to one side and a master suite wing to the other. The master has a private balcony as well as large dual baths. The lower level is completely finished and decorated to the same level of detail as the rest of the home. It has two additional en suite bedrooms and exercise room with a connected massage room.

You may need a good rest after what can be accomplished from a gastronomy point of view. In fact, the main level boasts an amazing gourmet kitchen with all high-end appliances, which include, but are not limited to, a state-of-the-art La Cornue range that would fill any chef with envy. The great room features double-height ceilings with wooden beam accents that connect to a comfortable sitting room. Below is a recreation room with a kitchenette off to the side and a spectacular home theater — adding to the amenities. Superb craftsmanship extends to the grounds, pool, pool house, and sunken tennis court. The landscaping is professionally manicured with specimen trees and meticulous detail. The pool house, itself, has two half baths, and a lower-level lounge with a window looking out to the pool. Truly high-end and one-of-a-kind, it could be yours. Offered at $18,995,000. RaiSiNG tHE BaR By anthony MiChael aymond Labarbara is making a name for himself in the luxury home market. He comes to this market with vast experience in all aspects of commercial building. The stunning mansion he’s now building has convinced him that the luxury home market is where he belongs. “It was on a lark, but I feel that I’ve found my passion,” says Labarbara, who admits that he’s thrilled to be branching out. “I loved what I was doing, but commercial building can become boring,” he says. “There are always complications and challenges that keep things interesting, but it lacked any level of excitement. I find that, in the Hamptons, there is a passion and a thirst for quality that has really inspired me to pursue a new direction.” The estate Labarbara is working on is more than 20,000 square feet, and he’s managing the entire project. He can’t reveal the name of his client (“It’s someone very big”), but he’s grateful for the opportunity to have a huge hand in creating something from scratch. “It’s not like taking someone else’s molding and attaching it to the wall; it’s like creating the molding, piece by piece,” he says. “It’s much more involved and much more interesting. Everything is just special about it.” Labarbara has an eye for key collaboration, and this is what gives him an edge. Enter Brad Grossman of 1640 Management, who has a famed background in luxury residential construction and hospitality. The pair are working together on high-end projects, and Grossman says that Labarbara brings something unique to the luxury residential construction space. “His ability to manage the site and keep things moving is really indicative of his background. There are a lot of questions that need to be asked and answered on a regular, if not daily, basis,” says Grossman. “There is a tremendous amount of collaboration and communication between everyone involved in the work.”

Raymond Labarbara and Brad Grossman.

“It’s really important to have someone to bring it all together and manage the site down to the last and most minute detail, and that’s a talent that Ray has truly mastered,” says Grossman. “Being able to deal with the architects, the designer, the homeowners, and everyone in between takes a special aptitude.” Grossman should know. He just delivered a large estate in Sagaponack, and he’s on the cusp of starting huge projects in Southampton and Water Mill, the latter of which is out to bid. He says he doesn’t really have a style (“I’ll do whatever the client wants,” he says) but he is just as comfortable with grand traditionals as he is with sleek modern. “I’ve done very intricate houses with fine detail throughout, and I have done, and enjoy, modern and minimalistic. They actually become favorite projects because I get to think in a new way,” says Grossman. “The thing about modern is really training yourself to be super linear throughout the design, whereas a traditional lends itself to having a different approach to every room . . . At the end of the day, we’re lucky to be in the Hamptons, working on all sorts of projects,” says Grossman. “And, it’s particularly rewarding when you are able to forge partnerships, like I have with Ray, that really work.” raygieconsulting@gmail.com 631.889.3481

hat do the hit TV shows The Apprentice, Project Runway, The Real Housewives of New York, and Design Star all have in common? Well, like those in the know who want to entertain in style, they have been choosing Midtown Loft & Terrace as their locale of choice. To be so in demand brings a lot of pride to owner Tarkan Bastiyali, who gets excited when he’s talking about the high-profile gigs Midtown Loft attracts. “Emily Blunt and the cast of the upcoming film The Girl on the Train were here recently for shooting, and it was really an amazing experience,” said Tarkan. “You can’t ask for better publicity than that, and I do believe that it also has a lot to do with the exceptional reputation we have.” Located on Fifth Avenue, Midtown Loft & Terrace offers two distinctly elegant spaces: Midtown Loft and Midtown Terrace at one address. It is popular because of its superior location and the attention it gives its clients. Down to the finest details, Tarkan’s team guarantees that every event hosted at the venue will be perfect.

“We make party, wedding, or corporate events shine with style,” he says. “And our growing reputation for providing the finest quality of services continues to set us apart from the rest.” Tarkan is also committed to keeping pace with trend, convenience, and affordability. Anyone who’s attended an event at Midtown Loft knows that the views are spectacular. You’re practically floating over some of the most iconic buildings in the area. So, what could possibly make the venue pop even more? “How about a retractable roof ?” says Tarkan, who reports that he commissioned one from Europe for Midtown Terrace. “With such an extravagant upgrade, we’ve not only increased the comfort of our guests and expanded our offerings, but also ensured that guests no longer need to rent a tent.” He said the roof, in addition to a brand new lobby, allows the venue to accommodate larger or multiple events at one time. These are just some of the big things that were on track for 2016, but Tarkan says it will always be the little things that set Midtown Loft & Terrace apart. Doormen, TV screens, up-lights, gobo lights, draped ceilings, a variety of chandeliers, and illuminated high-top tables and ottomans . . . these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the details that get raves from our clients,” he says. “And then when you add a fantastic view of the Empire State Building and Marble Collegiate Church, it just doesn’t get any better.” midtownloft.net

A Day in the Social Life Montauk By Karen Holly Berliner

P

icture this: sharing a giant bucket of lobsters, oysters, and clams on the beach at lunchtime; sunning and surfing the weekend through; or at night, squeezing into your fanciest little black dress with your old ragged flip flops on your feet to go party hopping; or just plain relaxing. Sound nice? While you don’t have to travel to the ends of the Earth to enjoy this, consider traveling to the ends of Long Island to Montauk. It’s hard to say exactly what it is that separates Montauk from its Hamptons sisters, but it is, indeed, a destination with unique offerings. Maybe it’s the laid-back, unpretentious vibe that attracts both surfers and socialites alike. From its famous landmark lighthouse perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the craggy coastline of Montauk Point State Park to its beautiful beaches and waters brimming with fish, this small seaside village is a destination apart from the rest. Peppered with high-end boutiques, a variety of hotels and guest houses, along with top-notch restaurants and

health-inspired venues, you can visit and do absolutely nothing or absolutely everything you wish. We start with the Montauk Salt Cave. Enter this cavernous space and take in its walls, built with pure pink Himalayan salt rocks and complemented by the floor, which is completely covered with salt. Prepare yourself for a 45-minute session where you will enter the cave and settle into a zero gravity chair surrounded by loads of healing salt. In addition,

Reiki is offered, along with healing through sound via crystal singing bowls and massages. The salt is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal, so take in this unique health treatment with its salt-saturated air, rich in natural mineral elements like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iodine, bromine, copper, selenium, iron, and more. We do as much, and leave feeling both relaxed and invigorated at the same time, the perfect balance. Next, we drive over to Gurney’s Inn Resort and Spa, situated on a sparkling and pristine stretch of oceanfront. This year-round resort offers a 2,000-foot private sandy beach for its 146 rooms, suites, and beachfront cottages all with ocean views. In addition,

five outstanding dining and drinking venues allow for a choice of food and drink, from elegant seasonal cuisine to casual fare with inventive craft cocktails. We plan to use the acclaimed spa renowned for its traditional European amenities, designed to cleanse, heal, and enhance overall well-being. We try out the Roman bath, Finnish rock sauna, Russian steam room, and Swiss shower: looking to experience all hydro therapies. Gurney’s world-famous indoor ocean-fed seawater pool with its panoramic views is outstanding. In the morning, we enjoy brunch at the onsite casual spot, Tillie’s, with its inviting American kitchen and seasonal classic cooking. We choose the brunch buffet and allow ourselves a little old-fashioned comfort-food indulgence. Afterward, we lounge the day away on the beach and prepare to eat dinner at sundown. We choose the Clam and Chowder House at Salivar’s Dock, a TLC-driven, family-run establishment, proud to serve fresh and local seafood provided to them by numerous Montauk commercial fishing boats. Featuring an inside bar, outside bar, sushi bar, and a top deck that overlooks the harbor, the place is lively without being over the top. The mood here coaxes us to drop all worries and woes and simply enjoy. We choose the oysters casino, crisp and savory with bacon atop, while at the same time plump and juicy. Next we share the jumbo soft shell crab sandwich and some sushi, which comes served fresh and artfully plated with such delicacies as squid (ika), a salmon-skin roll, and the signature shana roll:

shrimp tempura, avocado and seaweed salad wrapped in soy paper with kani and mango sauce on top. The next day is overcast so we enjoy a lengthy beach jog and head over to Naturally Good Foods and Café, Montauk’s primary health food store. In addition to a grocery department that is stocked to the brim with organic produce, cosmetics, vitamins, and herbs, is a fabulous breakfast and lunch menu, with many great choices. Specials made daily include homemade soups and veggie burgers, burritos, salads, and wraps, among other choices.

We share the signature sandwich, The Bruce, made with freshly caught, local yellow-fin tuna and served on seven-grain bread. We add a hummus platter and fresh garden salad and opt to eat outside in this spot’s private garden. We meet other diners and converse in between bites, an unexpected pleasure. For dinner we decide to visit the new kid on the block: Arbor. Located in the space formerly occupied by Ciao by the Beach, this new place offers a Mediterranean menu with a casual chic vibe, prepared by Pierre Sudre, the executive chef. The exterior space is accented with an arbor entrance and is hugged by lush gardens that contain a circular outdoor bar. The interior is airy and light, with a 30-foot bar, a sunken dining area, and half walls. The menu offers inventive choices such as crab dijonaise and local clams, a charcuterie and cheese plate featuring duck rillette and cured meats and charbroiled oysters with blue cheese butter. Main plates include free-range chicken with roasted potatoes, lemon, and basil or for a lighter dish, homemade pizzas such as seafood pizza with crab, sun dried tomatoes, shredded mozzarella, and caramelized onions. An expansive wine list by the glass or bottle, a nice selection of beer, and creative cocktails round out the beverage program perfectly. Saturday morning brings pristine blue skies and the smell of salty air. With several beaches to choose from, we can hop from one to the next. While Lake Montauk is a small gentle beach with warm shallow waters, Gin Beach is located on Block Island Sound east of the jetty, and it boasts calm waters and sparkling clean sand. Looking to end the weekend with something new and refreshing, we visit Duryea’s, which has opened this season under new ownership. We hear that the authentic Montauk vibe of this his-

toric fish market and lobster deck has remained the same and without compromise, while the space has been super refreshed with comfortable banquette seating, teak deck furniture, and simple dinnerware. In matching this vibe, the menu here is now served family style, with popular menu items including crab cakes, grilled or steamed lobster, classic clam bake, Duryea’s famous lobster roll, soft shell crab po-boy, and seafood towers of raw bar and sushi galore. We enjoy a private label Belgian White brew beer from the Crooked Ladder Brewing Company in Riverhead, NY. For on the go, their fish market features fresh local seafood along with farmto-market products such as Fairview Farm homemade jams and preserves and Backyard Brine pickles. We order some fresh-catch choices and ice pack it to bring back home. We pack our bags and begin to make our way back from Montauk Point passing through the last of Montauk into Amagansett. In the middle of nowhere on the right we spot a sign up ahead. In nondescript caps it reads LUNCH, but in mixed letters underneath the words “The Lobster Roll” reveals its identity. The place from the outside isn’t much. Once we go inside we find that there is even less to talk about: no frills, no glitz, no glamour; just a bare-bones seafood-lovers’ paradise of a menu, including such favorites as steamers and broth (South Fork classic soft shell clams), creamy lobster bisque, and plain whole steamed lobster. This iconic spot now offers a food truck for off-premise catering events. It will also be co-branding a Lobster Roll t-shirt with Showtime in promoting season three of The Affair. So much fun! They now offer a gluten-free menu, including homemade

cupcakes, homemade no-sugar-added pie, no-sugar-added ice-cream, and a gluten-free beer. Their expansive bar menu now includes several innovative summer cocktails. There’s always room for more so we munch, crunch and doggie bag it when we can dine no more. We doubt that any of it will actually make it all the way home! To be honest, it never really does.

f you’ve ever been to Maine, you know that blueberries are something special. Not a summer event goes by when there isn’t a pie, cocktail, or spread made from these delicate little bubbles of flavor. For us, Vacationland can be found on the East End where we know that this is the way life should be! And, part of that life is ensuring that our treats — for ourselves and our kids — are delicious and nutritious. In the case of frozen blueberry mint yogurt pops, you get a trifecta with the addition of refreshing. This treat is truly healthy. Blueberries are packed with fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and phytonutrients, which are all great at warding off heart disease and helping keep cholesterol low. Meanwhile, using Greek yogurt instead of cream and replacing refined sugars with agave help to eliminate guilt. No matter: they are simply delicious and the perfect addition to any event. about andrea correale and elegant affairs Andrea Correale, the president of Elegant Affairs, is a celebrity caterer and the national entertaining expert for Lenox China and OK TV. Directions: 1. Blend the blueberries in a food processor or blender into a smoothie-like consistency. 2. Pour the thick blueberry liquid into a large bowl. Stir in the agave/honey and chopped mint. Add the yogurt and very gently mix everything together. If you want a tie-dyed look to your popsicles, do not fully blend the yogurt and blueberries. 3. Pour mixture evenly into each popsicle mold. If your mold has slots for sticks, you can insert them before freezing. If not, freeze for two hours before inserting the sticks. Continue to freeze for an additional 4 hours or until frozen. 4. Run popsicle molds under warm water to easily remove.

osé: delicate, golden pink, slightly tart, it is emblematic of balmy summer days, sunset cocktails with toes in the sand, hours of poolside lounging and savory barbeques. “Rosé is the wine to drink over the summer,” says John Caplan, the president of grapeswine.com, named by Wine Spectator as one of the premier wine-selection and delivery establishments in the country. Together with his brother Trevor, Caplan has for more than 20 years led an internationally recognized group of wine advisors that traipse the globe, meticulously examining more than 5,000 vino labels a year and doing the legwork and homework to match the palates of their varied and discerning clientele. How did rosé become the “thing” — synonymous today with luxury leisure in hot spots from Barcelona to East Hampton? All the while overcoming some deep-seated prejudice to pink wine due to its cheap cousin white zinfandel — a sugary, poorly blended excuse for wine that rose to inexplicable fame in California in the 1970s and ’80s. And a “thing” today it is — just ten years ago it took the producers of now popular Provençe rosé Whispering Angel almost a year to unload a batch of 500 cases, while last year 100,000 cases almost sold out. “Rosé is famous because of the South of France,” explains Caplan. “From Monaco to St. Tropez, it became the signature wine.” This was no accident. The Provençe region of France is the motherland of rosé production, where it is considered a local art form and the surest region to buy an optimal summer

rosé. These pale Provençe wines are known for their crisp, dry flavors and notes of strawberry, raspberry, and citrus. Contrary to popular belief, rosé is not made by blending white and red wines. “Most people don’t realize that rosé is actually a red wine made like a white wine,” says Caplan. First of all, rosé is made from red wine grapes. The difference lies in how long you allow the skin to remain in the mix after crushing the grapes. “You let the skin kiss the grapes for just a few hours to make a pale rosé to a few days to give it a red tone, resulting in that gorgeous pink salmon hue,” he explains. “Rosé has numerous red wine characteristics, such as the berry tones, but is fresher and lighter and, therefore, perfect for summer,” he adds. “It can be enjoyed on its own or with many types of lighter fare: salads, grilled fish, cheeses, lean meats.” For summer 2016, the Caplan brothers recommend three Provençe rosés in particular. A complex and vivacious wine with white peach and Woodberry aromas, the Chateau Margui Rosé 2015 is crafted from cinsault, syrah, cabernet-sauvignon, and vermentino grapes and finishes on a splendid mineral imprint. This gastronomic rosé pairs beautifully with summer dinners: tapas, tartares, seasonal vegetables, and fresh local fish. Also high on the list is the 2015 Chateau Paradis Rosé — light and lively with excellent richness and superb notes of red berries, tangerine zest, and wildflowers — it is a classic Provençe rosé and an absolute crowd pleaser . . . the perfect foil for any meal. Known as “Provençe pink gold” is the Chateau Léoube Rosé ‘Secret’ 2015, produced from oceanfront Riviera vineyards that make up some of the most expensive real estate in the world. It originated as a secret bottling its owner made just for his wife. Fashioned from grenache, cinsault, and cabernet grapes, this salmon-hued rosé carefully blends freshness with warm and spicy depth and has an intense nose of citrus and minerality. No matter which pink you drink, and whether lazing or frolicking, it is abundantly clear that Provençe rosé is the perfect complement to a weekend spent in the Hamptons. Grab your favorite label, head to the beach, and savor every last drop of vino and summer under the stars.

NEW YORK’S SASSY SWEETHEART RAINA SEITEL By Jack Tudor

C

atching up with Raina Seitel is truly like chatting with an old friend. After all, her career spans a wide swath of high-profile media. From reporting hard (Emmy-winning) news on all major networks to serving as correspondent on the daily lifestyle show New York LIVE on NBC New York, she’s literally like MasterCard: everywhere you want her to be. Residing uptown with her son, Hunter, and her longhaired Chihuahua, Theo, Raina recently found a slice of time to fill us in on what’s keeping her busy.

Raina on the New York LIVE set with Sara Gore.

Raina and Theo filming in NYC.

Your work life sometimes merges with your personal one. Yes, and it’s exciting when it does. We just did a story about the new Dining with Your Dogs law, and my old-timer, Theo, got to be the star. He sniffed out all the hottest dog-friendly restaurants and we followed along. By the way, he highly recommends the chicken and waffles at The Pavilion.

Hunter and Raina. Photography by Jonas Gustavsson.

Your New York LIVE audience watches you on TV screens and taxis around the city. What are your thoughts on being front and center? I’m grateful that I get to do what I love professionally in the city that I love personally — with the most talented team in television. We explore all the good stuff and call it work! I have pinch-me moments every day because I cover everything from Broadway openings to the latest fitness craze to fashion trends to foodie hot spots. It’s really a labor of love. Was the jump from hard news to entertainment tastemaker a natural progression for you? The thing that drives me most is curiosity. I believe you can never ask too many questions to get to the heart of a story, and you have to listen with wonder. So whether it’s a hard-hitting investigative story like the ones I did at Good Morning America or a behind-thescenes feature on Fiddler on the Roof, it is the same mindset that propels me. I go in knowing what I want to ask but really let the interview unfold and lead me. That’s when the impromptu, most authentic moments unfold.

Since you cover the coolest trends and happenings in New York, what’s the best ticket in town right now? Well, Hamilton, of course. And I may or may not be able to recite every lyric of every song. What is a must do in the city this summer and why? Um, see Hamilton. Seriously, though, you can’t go wrong with the classics like Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks, Shakespeare in the Park, U.S. Open, or Summer at Lincoln Center. What’s NYC’s best-kept secret from a foodie perspective? I have a sweet tooth, so our family’s go-tos are The Little Cupcake Bakeshop on the LES, for vegan cookies and cream cupcakes. And we’re regulars at our neighborhood spot, Levain Bakery. For those who don’t consider cupcakes and cookies a meal, the gospel brunch at the Red Rooster in Harlem is great. And somehow you fit in being a mom too. I couldn’t love any two creatures more than I love Hunter and Theo, and the good news is only one can talk back! Right now Hunter and I are working on a family project: an illustrated children’s book. No matter what we do, it’s always an adventure. Raina will moderate three panels at our Healthy Guru event on July 9. healthyguru.com Follow her on Twitter & Facebook @rainaseitel rainaseitel.com Social Life

MELody MayER’S W EaR W itH a LL: MUSiC to oUR EaRS By JaCoB MurdoCh

M

emorial Day weekend was red hot for the Hamptons mainly because the East End welcomed renaissance designer Melody Mayer to its register of high-end shops. Her new store, WearWithAll, at 10 Main Street near Rowdy Hall, offers something new and original: a boutique and an art gallery. Shoppers can adorn themselves and their homes with art in apparel, accessories, and great paintings from new artists around the world. We naturally wanted to learn more. You are an international success with your designs sold in Bloomingdale’s, saks, Henri Bendel, macy’s, and Harrods. What made you decide to open your own shop? I’ve always wanted my own chain of stores so I could design and choose all the merchandise. Many stores today are just buying safe: regular basic, and that is boring for the customer. That’s why so many stores are not doing well. I believe you have to give the customer many reasons to come out: to socialize, to see, to feel, to touch. We cannot let internet retailing take over. Shopping will always be a great pastime. We need to have adventure. Leave the house. Meet new people. Find new things. But I still will have the greatest virtual reality website in the fall to add to the experience. Why did you decide to integrate a gallery into the shop? I’ve loved art my entire life. I cannot live without music and aesthetics. I wanted to find emerging unknown artists and help them get exposure. Each artist will be featured for one week with seven of their paintings. In August I will then choose a few artists to paint on a jacket I design. oK, let’s get to you. the melody mayer collection is something to behold. What is a must-have this summer? It goes from very colorful to very sexy. I chose amazing fabrics that look like paintings themselves. The maxi dress is very in this year, so I give the customer a few choice styles for that. And then everything is mesh and netting, so I have a few of those sexy looks too. The tops and short dresses are easy to wear but gorgeous to look at.

Melody Mayer in one of her velvet creations.

What inspires your designs? Breathing! Literally every moment of every day inspires my creativity. I am constantly inventing and sketching. Right now I am in the process of patenting an electronic bag I invented: look forward to seeing that in the near future. You also have some curated items? I have chosen to feature a few beautiful artistic collections of jewelry, sunglasses, and hats. I work with all my chosen artisans in curating creative in-style accessories. Each item is a statement piece. You will be complimented wherever you go wearing WearWithAll accessories! What’s in it for the guys? I always believe in including men in the shopping experience. I found this incredible tee shirt company from Paris, making vintage-inspired tee shirts for men. As soon as I signed my lease for the store, I called the owner and handpicked the best ones. How did you settle on the name WearWithAll? People always said I should have a store. I thought of WearWithAll so long ago — knowing how great it would be for a chain of stores. The name says unlimited to me! I designed the logo and the store to look like the first of a chain. A very exclusive chain at that! Price points start at $40 and go to $2,500. From Nightclubs to Museums By Inna DeSilva

n a sweltering Thursday afternoon I watch a tall, handsome friend of mine make a cool entrance into Sant Ambroeus in the West Village. His name is Randy Scott and his face should be familiar to any New Yorker who has gone out to any number of trendy places in the last 20 years. He has been the gatekeeper and host at such favorites as Pangaea, Cain, and The Surf Lodge. I’ve known Randy for many years, and he has always been an ambitious fellow. Still, I was a bit surprised to learn that he was becoming a serious player in the rarified world of art. Randy, who is a born and bred New Yorker, was a drama major at the city’s famous LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts. Afterward he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Hampshire College. He pursued acting for several years and believes his training as an actor helps him understand and communicate well with many of the star artists in today’s contemporary art market. His foray into the art world began as a lark four years ago when his friend, a major gallerist, asked Randy to accompany him to a meeting in Denver with an important collector of 19th-century American art. After cramming for three weeks, Randy made such an impression that the collector walked away with a major Albert Bierstadt. Randy found such joy in the whole process, and he saw that many of his social skills combined with his intellectual prowess could be combined in an exciting new career. That is how Randy’s company Scott Art Inc was born. The company advises approximately eight private clients at the moment. Randy offers services as an art consultant, dealer, and curator. Most of his clients are people whom he met while working in the nightlife business. Many powerful art dealers have his name on speed dial. He is known for facilitating quick sales on unusual pieces for his clientele. To see Randy’s curating talents this summer, stop at The Surf Lodge anytime. Some of the famous names in the art game will be showing prized pieces, some staying in residency, or attending the dinners and brunches that Randy is curating on the weekends. From Chinese activist-artist Ai Weiwei to downtown’s darling Scott Campbell, you will be wowed and delighted by museum-quality art on display at everyone’s favorite hotspot. Randy will be working with five unique institutions to bring the project to soaring heights: Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, Sotheby’s and AW ASIA.

Randy Scott

As Randy and I part to go our separate ways, I am proud of how much he has accomplished and cannot wait to see how far he will go on this wonderful and exciting new path. To see the latest of his projects, follow Randy Scott on Instagram: randyscottnyc

Julie Rose’s Sweet Hospitality By Bennett Marcus

Thirty Years of Dramatic Catering A tenet of starting a successful business is to find a niche and fill it, and that’s exactly what Julie Rose, the owner of Hospitality Group, did thirty years ago when she founded her company. She came to New York to study writing for the musical theater, and after graduation she worked at a kitchen in Queens that catered film and television shoots. She wasn’t so great at working on largescale food prep. “They kind of kicked me out of the kitchen, and said, ‘Why don’t you take the food to the jobs?’” Rose remembers. She became known among the film crews, and eventually she got a call from Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theater, which needed someone to run their concessions. “I asked the people I was working for if they wanted to do it, and they said no, and I didn’t think about it again until I picked up The New Yorker, and saw that David Mamet was doing a play there, and he had just won a Tony for Glengarry Glen Ross, so I thought, What the hell, I’ll call.”

The Walt Disney Company Rose had a success on her hands. “I was a resentful business owner,” she laughs. “I wanted to be in the arts, but I was around the arts, so it was really fun.” The business grew organically. The Beaumont Theater opened a much bigger venue, holding 1,000, so she started hiring people. She read that Disney would be opening a theater, and contacted them. “I was always a marketer,” Rose says. “I’m an extrovert, and I like selling, so it just naturally happened.” Today, her company is in 26 theaters, and is still growing: they added City Center last year. For Disney, Hospitality Group designed a Lion King souvenir cup that is a best seller. “People love it and they are collecting them,” Rose says. Among the stars who have sampled Sweet Hospitality Group’s fare this season are Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda; Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka; and Ivanka Trump. In addition to private parties and benefits the company caters precurtain parties and runs the innovative lobby concession stands we all hit up at intermission.

A Dramatic Departure From Ordinary Rose also sits on the board of the Harlem School of the Arts. This organization recently held a benefit with a Havana theme, and Rose’s staff dressed in Cuban costumes and hats. “Our tagline is ‘A dramatic departure from ordinary.’ It is who we are. Most of us came from a theater or arts background. So for us it’s the fun of putting on a show.” Sweet Hospitality also caters weddings,

Julie Rose

bar mitzvahs, corporate events, and all kinds of parties. Rose keeps up on food trends. Today people want healthier options and some of the theater concessions have more extensive menus than others. One, on Theatre Row, serves empanadas, and the Beaumont offers hummus and cheese plates. The company had a full dinner menu with waiter service at the recent production of Cabaret, starring Alan Cumming, because it was set up as an actual nightclub in Weimar Berlin. The atmospheric environment there spurred Rose into doing more immersive events at private parties. sweethospitalitygroup.com

ioneering the concept of a social concierge service, myEZBZ.com enables its users to have businesses large and small compete on equal footing to earn their trust and solve life’s little problems. The myEZBZ app is a free download for both Apple and Android devices. A user fills out a free request for services ranging from home repairs to finding a new personal trainer, and everything else in between. Users include pertinent details along with images, if need be. The app then uses smart and radius technologies to contact all businesses within the user’s area via email and text — with all of the details provided to the user in real time. Businesses that respond to the user’s request within 90 minutes pay only a $1 fee to EZBZ; a response after 90 minutes is only $3. The user can then pick the best vendor to fulfill the service request from the competing bids. When a user is deciding which service provider is best, they are able to view a company profile for each vendor. Shana Schlossberg is the founder and CEO of EZBZ, Inc. She has a passion for small, family-run businesses, and chose to establish an innovative technology platform to empower them. The platform allows for real-time honest commerce, so a sole proprietor can compete at the same level as a 500-person enterprise. A business can sign up at EZBZ, but EZBZ’s database of businesses comes from a variety of sources. Shana and the myEZBZ team have partnered with other familyrun businesses. to streamline their services. Most recently, EZBZ Inc. launched its partnership with My City Mommy, a network of 100 local mommy sites across the US, to launch a special virtual concierge platform. EZBZ also recently paired up with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce (MCC), which has over 15,000 members and subscribers that serves as a primary resource and advocate for the over 100,000 businesses in Manhattan, to launch a special virtual concierge platform. MyEZBZ has also partnered up with a number of bloggers, magazines, and online communities, offering a one-stop-location for Shana Schlossberg

anything these outlets’ readers may need. Some recent partnerships include family blogger MomRN (momrn.com), momrn.com), parenting momrn.com blog Mom of the Year (themomoftheyear.net), themomoftheyear.net themomoftheyear.net), as well as Westchester NY Moms, a highly interactive local online community of over 8,400 moms in Westchester County. For busy moms, that means they can submit a free online request and have pricing along with availability sent directly to them that same day. For Shana, launching EZBZ, Inc. was never simply about making money; for her as with other social entrepreneurs, it is about creating a product or service that also contributes to the betterment of society and inevitably the world. Being a social entrepreneur is not just about starting a company founded on the principles of ending world hunger or stopping global warming, it is also about starting a company that is socially responsible. For Shana, the motivation was to eradicate the uneven playing field for small and big businesses. Through her experiences working in the corporate world for 15 years, she found that oftentimes those companies which touted themselves as empowering small businesses were often just pushing empty rhetoric. In fact, oftentimes those same organizations sometimes manipulated and took advantage of the very small businesses they claimed to exist to assist. With EZBZ, Inc., Shana has created a platform in which small, local businesses potentially hold the same clout as a massive company. In turn, users in search of quality service will no longer be blinded by a large company’s marketing efforts or by the capital behind top Yelp or Google listings’ positioning and instead will be able to pick a company based solely on their brand reputation. ick Andreottola, the founder and CEO of Status Luxury Group (SLG), says that to call his company a concierge service is a bit of a misnomer. He explains that what SLG truly offers is a network of members and services that allow members to benefit from key partnerships that are forged from a collective desire for the very finest — and even most exotic — experiences.

“Because of the network of trusted partners we have assembled, with two to three phone calls or emails, we can accomplish practically anything for our members anywhere in the world,” says Andreottola. “We are constantly able to broaden our scope, and then pass that on to our customers in a very meaningful way.” For example, short on time and with no boats available, a client in the Hamptons nearly missed fireworks on the Fourth of July. A quick call to SLG resulted in a chartered helicopter within an hour’s notice, allowing the client to get back to the city while enjoying the pyrotechnic display from the air — all the way home. Last year, a client needed a very specific rosé for an event on her yacht, but it hadn’t been released in the United States. “We sourced a case, delivered it, and had it ready on the client’s yacht in time for the party the next day,” remembers Andreottola. Another time SLG had Peter Luger steaks delivered to a client’s private jet within a few hours. What’s important to a client is important to SLG, no matter how unusual. One client had an extremely last minute request to reserve the entire outside seating area of a very wellknown restaurant on West Broadway in SoHo. The occasion: a birthday party for the client’s dog! “And we made it happen,” says Andreottola. “With our exceptional partnerships across the globe, we are able to offer our clients solutions that they may never have considered,” reports Andreottola. “We are consultants with real connections. That and attention to detail are what set us apart.” statusluxurygroup.com info@statusluxurygroup.com Facebook & Instagram: @StatusLuxuryGroup

rom studying psychology and photography at Barnard College, Nomi Ellenson has worked the red carpet for Getty Images and has been published in magazines like Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar. Nomi’s true passion is to encourage women to celebrate their body and she is doing just that in her boudoir photography business. “I get to work with all kinds of women, find out what makes them feel sexy, and then capture that on camera for them to treasure for the rest of their lives.” With her boudoir photography Nomi has crafted a photo business that combines her love for working with people and her creative passions. Her love for lingerie was born from a rich family history in the garment industry. Her great great grandfather opened a linen store in 1888 on the Lower East Side, which is now a lingerie and swimsuit store on the Upper West Side. She grew up with lingerie as a mode for support and expression. “Growing up I would play with all the different bras and underwear. I was always fascinated with what each garment does, and how beautiful the pieces could be.” After college Nomi worked as a bra fitter, but with photography as her main passion, she knew that was her calling. I sat down with Nomi to talk more about her boudoir photography business. How did you become interested in photography? My junior year of college I took a photography class for fun. It was black-and-white film photography and the darkroom. I loved being able to show my world in a visual way. Visuals of the world are so powerful. We are surrounded by them and I’ve always specifically been interested in how women are depicted. When did you decide to become a professional photographer? During my senior year of college, I was taking photo classes for fun and photographing my friends, of all ages, going through the process of finding a bra. I was working towards being a psychologist by interning at Columbia Medical Center in a psychology lab and working on the student emergency hotline. So you made the shift to photography. Why boudoir? In school I learned that powerful photos come from something that is unique to you. Growing up surrounded by my family’s

business of lingerie and swimsuits, I thought a lot about how our bodies are an intimate, beautiful, and difficult subject. Boudoir photography is an opportunity to merge several of my favorite subjects: women, lingerie, bodies, and photography together. With boudoir photography my work isn’t about beauty as one body type. It’s about creating a corpus of work showing my clients looking sexy and feeling their best in their body. i think women in the Hamptons would be interested in the experience of having a boudoir shoot with you, could you please describe the potential experience? Boudoir photography is an opportunity to take special photos of yourself in lingerie. It’s often gifted as a present for someone special. It is a full experience. You get your hair and makeup done, we have music playing, sip on some prosecco, and we then get to take photos. It’s their own photo shoot and I help guide my clients the whole way. there are so many photographers in nYc. What makes a shoot with you different? My main goal is to enable my clients to feel beautiful from the inside out. My mission is to make women see the most gorgeous versions of themselves, and that means, in many cases, showing their curves. I talk to a lot of my clients and their significant others after they’ve received their photos. It brings me so much joy to hear that they love their photos, and what an empowering experience it was. How can women experience their own boudoir shoot? I’m going to be in the Hamptons this summer! I love spending time at the beach and have gotten a lot of requests to do shoots at my clients’ homes, so that’s where I'll be! I also have my personal photo studio in Brooklyn. How can women be in touch with you? I offer a set of services, but I also custom tailor the experience. I’m happy to work with women on the specific visions for their shoot. I start with a consultation and work with the client from there. If you would like to book a consultation or shoot with Nomi Ellenson, she can be contacted at: info@boudoirbynomi.com boudoirbynomi.com

hat happens when two brothers, a cousin, and a friend decide to charter a yacht along the Mediterranean together? Well in the case of Andres, Javier, Mauricio, and Santiago, natives of Mexico City, a luxury spirits company is born. I had a chance to chat with Santiago Martinez, the CEO of The Bar Company, which owns Allaire Collection Privée. His energy and enthusiasm for the project was contagious. “We didn’t want just another brand, but a true luxury brand with the prevailing philosophy of quality, elegance and uniqueness.” After three years of research they started the Allaire Collection Privée with vodka, tequila, and aged rum. The vodka is from Poland and has been distilled six times. The Rum is from Barbados and is aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks. I have tasted the rum and it’s sublime. The tequila is made from blue weber agaves that are slowly cooked to give a perfect balance of sweetness. The tequila is then aged in bourbon casks and filtered with an innovative process to give it a smooth agave flavor. You can find Allaire in such fine establishments as Avenue, Surf Lodge, and Bar SixtyFive at the Rainbow Room. Try these fine spirits this summer and you will be impressed. allaireprivee.com
