Summer is here. Memorial Day weekend has arrived. Without a doubt, it’s my favorite time of year. I think summer in the Hamptons is unmatched by anywhere else on Earth. We have a lot to be thankful for. Just to be in the Hamptons is the true luxury, and with family and friends by your side, life here can be the very best. But with this comes a few responsibilities. Recently I noticed something about the Hamptons for the first time: its beautiful scent. One night, when I reached Westhampton after my drive from Manhattan, I opened my window to get some fresh air. The mix of salt air and spring woods poured into my car and I was struck by the noticeable difference from the air in Manhattan. It made me think about how important it is for us to treasure nature in the Hamptons and protect it from harm. Conservation and the environment on the East End should be No. 1 on everyone’s list. To learn about what you can do to become involved in protecting the Hamptons, please visit peconiclandtrust.org, nature.org, and groupfortheeastend.org. This year, we are celebrating Social Life’s 13th anniversary. We know some of our readers keep our magazine in their homes for years. I’ve even seen issues from 10 years ago sitting on cocktail tables throughout the Hamptons. We are humbled to be part of your home, and appreciate your loyalty. This year, we welcome you to our luxury content and event coverage. We strive to deliver engaging reading material in our pages, to keep your eyes and thoughts busy all summer long. Inside the magazine we publish fashion to profiles, wellness to real estate, and let us not forget the event-photo pages. We look forward to being a part of the Hamptons community and our readers’ lives this year and for years to come. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

I
t’s hard for me to believe that I’ve been coming to the Hamptons for over fifteen years. How did the time pass by so quickly? On my first visit, I stayed with a college friend in East Hampton. I remember how the unexpected juxtaposition of farmland and powdery beaches — a veritable cornucopia of nature — communicated a serene completeness that filled me with such bliss. The mixing of awe and pleasure that is inspired by nature’s beauty has an energizing value. It recharges and renews: one of the very reasons to commune with nature. It’s easy to take the East End’s completeness for granted. How can one stay grateful and in awe of what has become expected and familiar? Yet staying inspired is critical because that’s our connection to the East End’s renewing energy. In order to truly recharge, one has to reconnect to the very first feelings that the Hamptons beauty inspired within us. So make sure to carve out time to watch a sunset. Personally, I love riding a bike to the marshes and eating a croissant while watching the sun melt into fiery pinks and purples. Unplugging from the stress and chaos of the daily grind and communing with the environment and all things living gives us a sense of interconnectedness. This summer, I hope everyone feels a sense of commitment to our environment and translates commitment into specific action. Creatures have a soul and a unique character and — just like us — a will to live. Animals come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, but they share the very same things in common with us: They want to live with their loved ones. They want to be free and safe. Currently the main foundation I have been donating to is Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation that combats the dog meat and cat meat trade in Asia, but if you prefer to focus locally, there are a multitude of organizations. Last Chance Animal Shelter, right here in Southampton, and the North Shore Animal League are two organizations that I hold especially near and dear to my heart. Your choice to give back will make a difference in the world around you. We all have unique ways of sharing the abundance we are so lucky to enjoy. The process of enjoying the East End and then sharing that joy with the world is a personal one. Have fun with it and enjoy this beautiful weekend!

Bedroom Ready Designers have taken lingerie out of the boudoir and onto the streets. Get sexy this summer and rock a slip dress out for a dinner date. Or take a slinky silk number that was once only meant for your comforter’s eyes out to lunch. Designers from Celine’s Phoebe Philo to Alexander Wang have made it very clear: bedroom eyes are not just for the boudoir. Shine Bright Sequins shimmered everywhere on the spring 2016 runways this year. It’s a look we love because it’s effortlessly glamorous with a ton of sparkle and shine. Designers like Marc Jacobs and Alber Elbaz brought us back to the ’70s disco era, while others, like Hedi Slimane, created a modern glittery look that could be worn during the day. This look is for the girl who is constantly jet-setting from a music festival to that art biennial. She’s fun and knows how to keep her Instagram feed as sparkly as her dress.

Jetsetter Style: A Fairy tale Escape In South Tyrol By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.
A
part from a small translucent plaque bearing the name Bad Schöergau, there is nothing else to suggest what lies behind the wooden gate on this quiet, winding street cocooned in the mountains of South Tyrol, Italy. In this northern section of Italy, over 60 percent of the inhabitants speak German. The hotel is elegantly understated, peppered with art from local artists. It has clean lines and a low-key palette with hints of blue, umber, and dusty pink. The result is highly personal and nostalgic. You feel as though you have returned home after a long journey. By night, the interior is suffused with a warm golden glow that is echoed on the exterior by handblown glass lamp posts along the walkways. The hotel has been run by the same family for hundreds of years. The current guardian of the property is Gregor Wenter, a man who reinvented this hotel’s aesthetic and taste, ushering Bad Schöergau into a carefully poised modernity. The Bad Schöergau (bad means bath in German) has a longlasting tradition as a farmer’s bath. The hotel’s own water source has been used as healing water since 1624. The water
contains ferric sulphate, sulphur and many other healing minerals that swirl around the oval wooden masterpiece that is the hotel’s pool. The food, meanwhile, is just as restorative and intoxicating. Harboring ambitions to produce more complex food, Gregor created a kind of culinary wonderland delivering a full experience you never knew you wanted to get lost in. Taking center stage is the signature dish, pine risotto. The food is produced right in the vicinity with home-grown products of nearby farmers. The Veranda Inn restaurant just earned its first Michelin star, further adding to the property’s culinary success story. The wines were excellent. Not only does Gregor have a wine cellar of over 400 wines, but he created his own white wine, Solaris. This propietary wine is offered only at his Veranda Inn restaurant. Every moment is orchestrated to drive home one fact: this is no ordinary hotel you are staying in. bad-schoergau.com/en

Sexy Summertime Hair With temperatures warming and summer excursions beginning, it’s time to switch up your hairdo to a summer style that’s easy and breezy. Take a cue from master stylist and co-founder of the Warren-Tricomi Salon in East Hampton, Joel Warren, who’s had his hands in the manes of celebs like Minka Kelly and Ivanka Trump, among others. The Fishtail Braid When summertime humidity kicks in, instead of fighting frizz, try a carefree go-to hairdo like an ethereal, intricate-looking fishtail braid for those overly sticky days. The fishtail braid is my favorite plait because it’s easy to undertake and it looks fabulous on anyone. Joel Warren guides us on how to achieve this simple trendy braid: First, gather your hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and tie it with an elastic. Next, split the hair into two even sections; unlike a classic braid the fishtail requires only two sections. Hold one strand in each hand and use your finger to separate a small section of your hair from the outer edge near the elastic and cross it over to the opposite side. Pull tightly and repeat all the way through, trying to grab the same size (about a half inch) sections from each side. Secure with a small elastic, then gently tug on the braid with your fingers to loosen it for an effortless beach-vibe look and voila!
Treat Your Hair Warren explains that the best way to protect your hair from the summer elements is to wet your hair with clean water before going into chlorine or the ocean. This allows the hair to absorb the clean water instead of the salt or chlorine and will help keep your hair healthy throughout the warmer months. Additionally, it is important to constantly condition your hair during the summer to help protect from the dryness of the weather. Visit the Warren-Tricomi Salon, located in the heart of East Hampton, for a deep conditioning hair masque. The salon combines the unrivaled talent from the industry’s most illustrious hairdressers with an unrelenting commitment to immerse each client in the ultimate atmosphere of luxury. You’ll never want to leave. 64 Park Place, East Hampton; 212.262.8899

High-Heel Foot Makeover Surgery By Madison Cole
A
dmit it: For a lot of us, counting down to Memorial Day means getting summer-ready. We load up on green juice and cut down on refined sugar. We hoof it to bootcamp and laserderm facials. But, between mouthfuls of microgreens and interval training sessions, we probably forget to take care of one thing: Our feet. We do a lot to stay healthy and, well, flawless, but we do most of it in sky-high heels. And foot problems, particularly bunions and hammer toes, are a natural product of experiencing life with a three-inch lift. So, how should we face beach days and summer soirées with bulbous, bent toes that feel as bad as they look? Well, rather than hide our feet in the sand, hobble through cocktail hours or embrace black-tie flats, we could follow the crowds of hopelessly devoted heel-lovers to the Manhattan office of Dr. Neal Blitz. Over the past few years, the New York–based reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon and his “high-heel makeover” have earned a global following. Through his signature procedure, Dr. Blitz has helped thousands of patients get rid of their toe woes and hold onto
their shoe collections. Bunions are exceedingly common in the U.S. — more than half of American women suffer from the unsightly and often painful condition, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Despite the common misconception, a bunion isn’t exactly a growth. It’s a bone that’s shifted out of place. “It’s really the misalignment of the big-toe joint pushing out on the skin from underneath that causes the bony prominence,” says Dr. Blitz. While some doctors believe bunions only afflict people who are genetically predisposed to the condition, other foot experts say bunions are often a casualty of logging miles in stilettos, whether or not bunions run in the family. Support for this position dates back to at least the 1940s, when a podiatrist named Samuel Shulman discovered that people who didn’t wear shoes simply didn’t get bunions, a common issue in America even then. Shulman made the connection during World War II when army duties brought him to China and India. He spent over a year surveying thousands of people,

often laborers in rural communities, about their footwear and foot problems. The takeaway? No shoes, no bunions. More than 70 years later, here we are: Addicted to our heels and suffering the consequences. Wearing high heels — even a pair of four-figure stunners — is an ideal way to shift the big-toe bone over enough to create a bunion. Walking in a stiff high heel shoe at a steep pitch puts excess pressure on the ball of the foot. That pressure causes the big-toe joint (or occasionally the pinkie-toe joint) to give way to a visible protrusion. But, Dr. Blitz is more focused on alleviating suffering than taking away anyone’s heels. Because he gets it. There’s something about a high heel that injects polish and authority into any outfit, in any situation. It’s not just us; one recent study found that women project status through the height of their heels. And in a 2014 study, people rated women sporting heels as being more attractive than their unperched counterparts. Rather than tell someone with bunions to change their shoes, Dr. Blitz uses his patented surgical technology to change people’s feet — and, of course, fix them. Historically, bunion removal was considered a tricky procedure. At one point, surgeons used hundreds of different operations — only a few have survived the test of time. And most of the remaining options require six weeks of immobilization. Enter: Bunionplasty®, a Blitz-signature procedure that revolutionized bunion surgery. In an effort to shorten recovery time, Dr. Blitz developed an implantable device
(a titanium plate and screws) that holds the bones steady and matches the curvature of a patient’s anatomy. The pioneering (and patented) plate design lets patients leave procedures on their own two feet. His recovery allows patients to walk on the operated foot in a small surgical shoe without the need for bulky casts or crutches. His patients also get to leave without feet full of scars. Rather than make the surgical incision on the top of the foot (as is traditionally done), Dr. Blitz performs his Bunionplasty® procedure from the side of the foot and uses plastic surgery techniques to minimize scarring. Dr. Blitz brings the same approach to fixing hammer toes, which form when long, bended toes buckle at the joints. As with bunions, hammer toe complaints are common among high-heel wearers, and Dr. Blitz frequently addresses both issues at once. To fix a hammer toe, Dr. Blitz performs toe-shortening surgery, a selfexplanatory procedure that’s become popular among both women who have hammer toes and those who want to prevent them from forming. This year, as we head into summer, consider staying a foot ahead.

ABOUT FACE
Andrew Jacono, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director of the New York Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery
By Matt Rushing
T
he practice of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery is an evolution, and the most successful professionals in this space are those who marry cutting-edge techniques and procedures with the ever-changing demands of their current and prospective clients. Dr. Andrew Jacono is regarded globally as not only an authority in the discipline, but also as an artist. From minimally invasive face-lifting and anti-aging techniques to the most complex reconstructive procedures, Dr. Jacono is respected by his clients and peers. Matt Rushing: What sets your practice apart from others in this space? Dr. Andrew Jacono: Customized care. From the minute you step foot into my office, both my staff and I provide each patient with care tailored to his or hers individual needs. Today, customization extends to the actual procedure — the ability to offer variations in technique based on patient needs is important in achieving desired outcomes. MR: What is the biggest mistake people make when considering cosmetic surgery? AJ: Thinking that every feature works for every face. Oftentimes, patients will bring pictures of celebrities and request that their own outcomes look identical. Using a 3D imaging system, like the VECTRA M3, I can offer patients both pre- and post-procedure references: the ability to literally visualize what one or more procedures will look like and then comparing the results.
MR: Social media selfies seem still to be popular. What advice would you give a patient considering plastic surgery to correct selfie flaws? AJ: Depending on the issue being addressed, there might be a non-surgical, more temporary solution that the patient should consider prior to undergoing surgery. Liquid facelifts and rhinoplasties that are performed with injectables are very popular today and require no downtime. MR: You are well known for your philanthropy. What causes in particular are top of mind? AJ: I have just returned from a mission in Ecuador with the HUGS Foundation, a nonprofit organization that delivers medical care to children in developing countries. Organizations such as Beyond Our Borders and Healing the Children, as well as my son’s charity, T.H.A.I. (Through Healing All Indigent), an organization that helps children in developing countries who have cleft lip and palate deformities are all close to my heart. MR: Looking ahead to 2017, what trends do you think we’ll be talking about this time next year? AJ: I am currently lecturing on the future of minimally invasive plastic surgery procedures and rapid recovery methods. These topics will continue to be at the forefront of the conversation in 2017. Everyone wants in on the undies game these days, and while lots of styles look amazing on an impossibly chiseled model, they don’t always ensure that region of your body is awash in pleasure. Enter Pengallan. Elegantly cut for ultimate range of motion and no rideup, this high-end boxer is about as close to bespoke as you’re gonna get. If you are rich, you may as well feel it.

Something for Everyone By Jacob Puck
apovana in Sag Harbor is well known as the Ashtanga Healing Center of the Hamptons, offering classes in classical yoga, pranayama, Ayurveda, chanting, meditation, and philosophy. Tapovana’s owner and teacher, Corey De Rosa, explains below about the practice, its benefits, and why its practice extends beyond poses to ancient gastronomy. Jacob Puck: What is the philosophy behind your yoga practice in the East End? Corey De Rosa: Tapovana’s philosophy of health and wellbeing are based on yoga, Vedanta, Ayurveda, and meditation, which are the culmination of thought and ideas, put into practice, that come from the Vedas, the oldest Sanskrit literary text. It has been our mission to bring this eternal wisdom to the mainstream: to create a multi-sensory healing environment based on the ancient Indian principles of self-realization. JP: How is your practice unique? CD: I don’t like to think of what we offer as unique. We study and practice to do the best we can to share the classical path laid out by the Sage Patanjali in the text, Yoga Sutra. While it is difficult to date, it is estimated that this collection of aphorisms is approximately 2,000 years old. JP: What do you think is the biggest misconception about yoga? CD: That it’s a physical practice. So, people often think: I can’t do it; I’m not focused enough; I’m not in the right shape; or simply, It’s not for me. However, if done under the right guidance, with consistency and awareness, yoga and its multitude of lasting physical and mental benefits, is for anyone. In fact, at first, it will require a lot less time than one might think. JP: What is most fulfilling for you about your practice? CD: There are so many fulfilling aspects to this practice. One of
the greatest ones is seeing people cultivate strength and courage through disciplined effort, to persevere in a mindful way when they are confronted by a fear, or some other disturbance to their senses. JP: Are your classes appropriate for beginners? CD: The beauty of this system of yoga is that traditionally it is taught in a way that makes it appropriate for everyone! As long as you have a mind, a physical form, and any amount of breathing capacity you can learn yoga from us in the traditional way we learned from our teacher in Mysore, India. The necessary information is transmitted from teacher to student individually. Ancient Vedic wisdom tells us that although our energetic essence is absolute (and the same in all living beings) our individual makeup, our nature, is unique. This one-on-one way of sharing yoga lets us cater to each practitioner, while following a tradition and framework that leads us back to our pure state of existence: bliss! JP: When we spoke recently you were extremely busy cooking for 20 people. What was that about? CD: We at Tapovana use Ayurveda and its practices as one of the traditional Vedic tools to help advance to our natural state of balance. Ayurveda can be thought of as a 5,000-yearold holistic healthcare system, also stemming from the Vedas. One of the practices that we engage in and offer at Tapovana is regular seasonal detox programs, using a correct daily routine (dinacharya), regular exercise, and meditation, and, of course, deliciously prepared meals! I have found that this is a great way to share this life-enhancing information, because not everyone is interested in doing yoga or spirituality at first, but everyone eats. From fat to fit through freezing with Coolsculpting
Dr. Jacquie Smiles
By J.O. Stefano
J
ust a few years ago, Dr. Jacquie Smiles created JustMelt, a technologically advanced medspa with a fleet of all the top FDAapproved machines in the world for body contouring, right in the heart of Manhattan. Today, JustMelt offer patients the perfect blend of aesthetics and science for their body, skincare, and weight-loss needs so they can get their confidence back with cutting-edge non-surgical procedures. “I’ve always said that beauty begins and exudes with a healthy smile, but I’ve expanded it to the rest of the body,” says Dr. Jacquie. “As an artist, it is extremely gratifying to not only create a perfect smile but also to help people achieve inner beauty externally from head to toe.” What’s burning hot in 2016? According to Dr. Jacquie, you better get from the back of the line to the front now for CoolSculpting, one of the most superior, non-surgical techniques that eliminates fat forever.
“We’ve never seen anything like this,” says Dr. Jacquie. “The CoolSculpting procedure is proven, safe, and effective. The days of costly, time-consuming, and painful downtimes from invasive surgeries are over for so many people. My clients are getting “wow” results and they love how their clothes fit better, feel better, and look better.” What is it? The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting — so you’ll look great from every angle. And, Dr. Jacquie has built her reputation on perfecting the procedure in her exclusive Manhattan medspa. “CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure, and I have been blown away by patients’ results!” says Dr. Jacquie. “What’s most rewarding is the complete experience: my patients felt great.” How does it work and where did this come from? According to coolsculpting.com, scientists at Harvard observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. The scientists realized that the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. The idea that cold can target fat cells — without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue — was the insight behind cryolipolysis, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based. “Fat cells frozen during the CoolSculpting procedure gradually die off and leave the body through the body’s natural elimination process,” says Dr. Jacquie. “That’s why the results are long-term. The fat is gone for good! And, untreated areas will have no change in fat cell distribution.” Jacquie says that years of research have gone into this technology, and thousands of patients speak to its success. “CoolSculpting is not a fad because it’s based on sound science,” she says. “Leading researchers and doctors have published scientific and clinical journal papers, medical meeting posters, and technical reports hailing its success, and I’m on the front end, working with patients every day who are saying ‘Just freeze it at JustMelt.’ We are, and they love it!” justmelt.com

Pain free dentistry, fact or fiction? FACT!
DR. Kenneth Mark Anti-Aging Dermatologist
By Al Parker
By Carlos Lacayo
Dr. Kenneth Mark and Aviva Drescher
T
here are three things that people fear most: the IRS, sharks, and dentists. Yes, they all are synonymous with pain. Or, at least they used to be! “I’ve spent my entire professional life working to remove dentists from that list, and with every new innovation I offer, I’ve gotten closer and closer,” says Dr. Jacquie Smiles, who has practices in Manhattan, Woodbury, and Monroe, and currently the only dental and orthodontic practice to offer The Wand. “Now, I can say that we are there 100 percent with how we administer anesthesia.” The main cause of pain during the injection of an anesthetic is not from the needle penetration, says Dr. Jacquie; it’s due to the flow of the solution into the tissues too quickly, which creates pressure as the solution tries to spread throughout the area. “This pressure and pain, sometimes referred to as the ‘burst effect,’ is what’s so uncomfortable both during and after the actual injection, and, depending on the area where you are injecting, the pain can be very intense,” says Dr. Jacquie. “Not to mention, the mere sight of a needle triggers anxiety that dental phobics, and average patients, experience when they visit the dental office for treatment.” The Wand, now offered exclusively at Dr. Jacquie Smiles’ offices, addresses these fundamental problems with technology that ensures every injection can consistently be performed below a patient’s pain threshold. “This new way of injecting also eliminates the collateral numbness of the cheek, lip, and tongue that many patients find annoying and frustrating,” says Dr. Jacquie. What does it all mean? No pain and time gain. Says Dr. Jacquie: “We’ve elevated dentistry to a pain-free, anxiety-free experience, which allows you to get in, get out, and get on with your day without a numb face!” For more information, visit drjacquiesmiles.com.

Dr. Mark, who has offices in Southampton, East Hampton, New York City, and Aspen, is a nationally recognized injectables expert, who specializes in Botox and fillers such as Juvéderm and Voluma. “Voluma is the greatest filler ever invented for both adding volume and lifting the face. When done properly, the results are incredibly natural,” says Dr. Mark. Dr. Mark prides himself on his knowledge of anatomy and mastery of precision — learned from his skin cancer and plastic reconstruction training — and applying them to the cosmetic procedures he performs. An example is the recently approved, non-invasive treatment for fat removal under the chin, called Kybella. “This is one of the most gratifying procedures I perform, as simple injections literally melt fat away,” he reports. Nicole Scherzinger , Simply Unexpected By Devorah Rose and Lizabeth Zindel Photography by Gian Andrea di Stefano
“Growing up I always felt like I had been given something different. I would always say, ‘I’m the alien,’ ” Nicole Scherzinger confides. “But when I’m singing or performing or being creative that’s when I feel complete, when I feel whole, when I feel like I’m here for a reason.” As a young girl, music was constantly on Nicole’s mind; she lip synced to Whitney Houston daily and belted pop tunes at family barbecues. She dreamed of a life filled with song and is now living that dream, having cultivated a career of independence and versatility. Scherzinger has taken on a wide range of roles including the lead singer of the Pussy Cat Dolls, a judge on the reality TV show The X Factor, and the winning contestant of the tenth season of Dancing with the Stars. Her career has led to a variety of collaborations with artists from Slash to Andrea Bocelli. The partnership with Slash, the lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, happened in 2010 when he phoned her. “He heard this song of mine from the Pussy Cat Dolls called I Hate This Part, and he said that he loved it and couldn’t believe that was my voice.” Scherzinger agreed to collaborate and the duo
recorded a song called Baby Can’t Drive, with Roadrunner Records. Scherzinger loved singing with Slash at live concerts. “We have done a couple of live performances together, and when we do, that is my favorite. I’m a big rock chick at heart. I just love to get revved up on stage,” she says. On the other side of the musical spectrum, Scherzinger had the honor of singing last year with Andrea Bocelli, one of the world’s greatest tenors. This summer, she will be performing with him at the Hollywood Bowl as well as at other scheduled venues in Europe. Scherzinger recently performed in London. She starred as Grizabella in the West End’s revival of Cats, joining forces with the iconic Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her performance garnered a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She fondly remembers first learning she landed the part. “I was in the middle of doing a dangerous stunt on I Can Do That, a show for NBC, when I was told. I felt ecstatic.” Cats is based on T.S. Eliot’s book of poems about wondrously-named felines, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

The show transports the audience to inside the world of Jellicle cats, a unique breed that sing about their individual qualities before attending the Jellicle Ball, where one will be selected to rise to the supernatural Heaviside Layer for rebirth. To prepare for the role, Scherzinger took time to observe the behavior of abandoned felines. “When I found out that I was going to be a cat — and not just any cat, but a bit of an older cat — I went to an animal shelter in London to study strays. I studied older cats, I studied young cats, I studied their reactions and how they moved.” Scherzinger took us inside the rehearsal process. “There was a true craftsmanship behind what we did. How we broke down a song had so much meaning and so much depth — more than anyone can fathom. We would have really meaningful conversations about Grizabella: Why she would turn her head and why she wouldn’t turn her head. Why she would lift her arm and why she wouldn’t lift her arm. There was a reason for every little thing that we did. Nothing was thrown away.” While drawing inspiration from the original production of Cats that premiered in London in 1981 and New York City
in 1982, the London revival featured several musical updates, including a rapping Rum Tum Tugger, and additions to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hauntingly beautiful song Memory, which Scherzinger performed every night to a packed house at the London Palladium. “There is one section: a memoir dance before Grizabella sings her first memory. I was blessed enough to convince Andrew to make it longer. He actually wrote new music after all these years. I wanted it extended because I thought there was more of a story we could tell there. With that extension of music we had to do an extension of choreography to tell the story.” Scherzinger had the honor of working with Dame Gillian Lynne, who choreographed and worked as the assistant director on the original production of Cats with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Scherzinger says, “I worked really hard with Gillian Lynne. She is ninety-one years old and she’s had a legendary career as a ballerina, choreographer, and director. She is still as hard as anything and she is graceful and beautiful and she is royalty, but she will still make you cry. She had her artistic

vision and I had my artistic vision. She would usually win.” Scherzinger was scheduled to bring Grizabella to New York City this year, but chose a different direction. Instead of Cats, Scherzinger will be a judge on the UK’s X-Factor. Andrew Lloyd Webber, winner of two Tonys for Cats, wasn’t shy about expressing his displeasure with her decision. Our cover girl alluded to it quickly, by saying, “I look forward to doing Broadway when the time is right.” While partnering with outstanding artists has been a theme throughout her musical journey, Scherzinger holds a special place in her heart for the iconic singer of Purple Rain. “One of my biggest mentors and one of my closest friends was Prince,” she says. “He always brought out the best in everyone. He always inspired me to be the best and keep pushing, so that’s what I’m going to do. Prince found me at my early stages. It was well over ten years ago. He was my brother and my close friend and my teacher and my mentor. He taught me a lot about music.” Although Scherzinger has traveled all over the world from an early age, she embarked on her first trip to the Hamptons
a few years ago. “My whole life I always wanted to go to the Hamptons. Even though I’ve been to the South of France and have traveled a lot, the Hamptons is a place that I really wanted to see,” she says. “I thought that the Hamptons was an upper echelon place where the untouchables go and that it would be so fancy. I imagined that everything would be New England style and that the homes would be shabby white chic with columns. I thought one day I was going to get into the pearly gates of the Hamptons.” When she first stepped foot on the East End, however, she was surprised by how the picturesque stretch of Long Island didn’t match up to her preconceptions. “When I went to the Hamptons I loved it because it wasn’t pretentious at all. l thought it was beautiful, laid back, easy living.” Her favorite things about the South Fork are getting on a bike and riding everywhere, not being bothered, and getting ice cream. “It was so serene. The Hamptons is so picturesque and so beautiful and there is so much character. It’s stunning. I’ve seen some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life here. The Hamptons offers the best art show ever.

It’s a very special place for me.” So what’s next for Scherzinger? She will be starring in ABC’s remake of Dirty Dancing. For those not familiar with the film, Dirty Dancing centers around the romance of Baby, a young woman vacationing with her parents at a resort, who gets swept off her feet by Johnny, a working class dance instructor. Scherzinger’s character, Penny, is Johnny’s dance partner. The magical book and score for this movie made it a classic! Scherzinger feels blessed to have stayed on the musical path she has aspired to since her childhood. She says, “I’ve been on tours around the world so I’m right on track for making music, being on stage, touring, and doing what I’ve always loved.” She urges young people to “create your own world, create your vision, be original, don’t be a copy.”

hen summer begins depends on your perspective. Summer begins in the minds of many on Memorial Day weekend and not on June 20 as the calendar suggests. Yet, one could argue it comes even sooner, as an idea that serves as inspiration for yet another time to dream and plan once more. With the first whiff of spring in New York City came the April showers that brought May flowers and warmer temperatures that inspired us to begin dreaming of long days by the ocean from Westhampton to Montauk; leisurely brunches that barely leave us enough time to go for a swim; naps after a few too many Bloody Marys or mimosas, and wines or ciders from The Wine Stand at Wölffer Estate Vineyard. Yet, what I have learned about planning on the East End in the summer is that it can be as useful as the plans you might
make on a Friday and Saturday for what you intend to do after Sunset Fridays and Saturdays at The Wine Stand. You see, you might just want to make those plans on the fly, after you have had time to relax, unwind, escape, and listen to some music before deciding what is “critical” for you to do. The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry, as the cliché warns. Sometimes we fall and can’t get up and sometimes we lay down with a bottle of Rosé and can’t get up either. In recent years, the source of my summer inspiration, reminding me that anything is still possible even when I’m willing to count myself out before anyone else has, is real Upper East Side New Yorker and former Palm Beach native, Elizabeth Finkle Sans (“Liz”), who has gone from cancer survivor to designer (Pearls4Purpose), yogi (partner at Lokaa

Time spent in the company of Liz and her amazing partner, Stephen Sans of Hamptons Tax Advisory Services, and their wonderful children has been healing and transformative. No matter what else I have planned on the East End, when I am out here, for selfish reasons I seek out their energy. Many of my plans that were to only start at the Swordfish Beach Club in Westhampton Beach, with me as their sixth wheel, often never make it beyond that. To my happiness gurus, thank you for making many a summer and my life better than it might otherwise have been had I continued on with my other plans. I have learned that it matters not what you missed out on or thought that you might have missed out on. Happiness can come by letting go of what comes next and just allowing oneself to live in the present moment, space, and time. For that reason, a part of the Hamptons that I had spent less time in until recent years will forever be a happy place for me. There are so many worthwhile things to do all along the full length of the East End, even in quiet pockets where the goings-on are low key and more intimate. Over the years, I have attended, covered, and photographed nearly every charitable and cultural happening; had cocktails and intelligent conversation in some exceedingly beautiful homes with some incredibly fascinating, intelligent, and worldly people, some of whom might truly even be classified as insane, arrogant, egotistical, self-righteous, self-important, and incredibly delusional — but quite entertaining and informative nonetheless. Points should be given for showing one’s true colors so as not to mislead. In that regard, I have not often been misled out East, at least with regard to the character or integrity of anyone or anything. In the Hamptons, I have had the opportunity to cross paths

and mingle with people whom I might have otherwise escaped connecting with in New York City or elsewhere. Although the truth is I might even have been better served had I not crossed paths with some of them. I do not feel that way about cats or dogs: most of those meetings have been far more uniformly positive, uplifting, and growth-oriented experiences. I am kidding . . . but not really.
gfee vs. gfe Yet, the one constant has been the incredibly well-maintained environment that has served as the atmosphere for these random meetings, conversations, or dialogues, if you will. There is a glory in the character and integrity of nature in these parts. And the simple fact is that there is a reason for that, actually many reasons for that, which all point to the diligent work of Group for the East End (affectionately referred to as “the Group” or “GFEE”).
Katherine Birch
“We have a choice — protect the nature of this very special place or allow it to be ruined. We are learning from the declining wildlife species that we need to be better stewards of the land, the water — the entire East End.” ~ Katherine Birch It is no coincidence that Wölffer Estate, beginning under the late visionary Swiss industrialist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Christian Wölffer, chose to support the Group early on. Perhaps he understood that his fortunes as well as those of the region’s other wine growers, required making a stake in the preservation of the character of the unique natural environment on the East End.
HISTORY
Jesse Mejia, Paul Jowdy, Stefano Tonchi
Established in Bridgehampton in 1972 in response to broadbased community concern about the future development of the region, the Group has served as eastern Long Island’s full-time professional community advocate for conservation for nearly 45 years. During this time, the Group has developed a reputation for achieving lasting conservation success, with the support of broad-based civic, business, and elected constituencies, Social Life

by advancing realistic solutions to complex problems; mobilizing informed citizens; advancing rational discourse; and educating the next generation of leaders to existing, emerging, and future challenges. Despite significant development of the East End over the last 45 years, the relentless efforts of the Group are reflected in the continued character and integrity of the area’s beaches, wildlife, water, and environment. They are a testament to the meaningfulness of the Group’s work. Today the Group’s yeoman work in protecting the East End environment is still widely recognized and respected and yet even more critical today than it was at the date of the Group’s founding. Certainly there are numerous worthwhile charitable and cultural organizations that are worthy of your patronage and support, a number of which we will continue to highlight here in this column, but I implore you still to consider even just your own self interest and the health, welfare, and happiness of your loved ones, family members, and fellow members of your own local community when you think of the relative importance of the Group. GFEE is not to be confused with The Girlfriend Experience, the Starz Limited series, based on the original film starring Sasha Grey, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The series is written and directed by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz, and stars the beautiful, talented, and intensely complex Riley Keough. But maybe it should remind us of the fact that beautiful things must be carefully and meticulously maintained lest they lose the character and integrity of their inner and outer beauty and their real or perceived value. Besides which, woman is nature and we ought to at least treat Mother Nature the way we would the most precious young feminine child, a beloved sister, wife, or mother. A society that places a relatively insignificant value on women or the natural environment will quickly and disastrously erode into an eternal abyss. Doubt me? Would you travel to the East End if the beaches were lined with oil, trash, and dead wildlife and there were never any pretty women in bikinis, but rather just middle-aged men in Speedos? Or worse, you could not drink the water flowing into the pipes in your homes? What has happened in Flint, Michigan, alone, ought to give one sufficient reason to

keep the Group adequately funded as a steward of our mutual interests here on the East End. If JFK were alive today, he might say: “Ask not what the East End can do for you [because we already know how much happiness it provides us all with] but ask what you can do for the East End.” After all, when it comes to caring for the nature on the East End, keep in mind the Group is often comped at a higher rate, similarly, we all get a far greater bargain for service for that extra “E” from the GFEE. And what the Group has been doing for decades has and continues to go on in the shadows benefitting us all whether we support them vigorously or not.
THE BIG EVENT: SWING INTO SUMMER AT THE BRIDGE! The Group’s annual benefit, Swing into Summer at the Bridge!, will take place Saturday, June 18, from 6:30 to 11:30, at a new venue, The Bridge in Bridgehampton. Guests will be dazzled by spectacular sunset views of Peconic Bay and they’ll sip specialty cocktails and an assortment of delectable wines from nearby Wölffer Estate Vineyard, the event’s exclusive wine sponsor. While strolling around the hilltop clubhouse by architect Roger Ferris, they’ll nosh on hors d’oeuvres and and bid on items in the super silent auction, which
includes a unique opportunity to train as a Navy SEAL for a day. Once the sun goes down, a scrumptious dinner prepared by The Bridge will be served, and then internationally renowned DJ Sam French will spin his irresistible tunes and get everyone dancing under the stars. Swing into Summer is being hosted by The Bridge’s owners, Stéphane Samuel and Robert M. Rubin, who are dedicated to maintaining the site with the utmost respect for the environment. Co-chairs include Katherine and Marco Birch, Elaine Crocker, Graciela and Munir Dauhajre, Grace Koo and Kerry Heffernan, Genevieve and Rob Lynch, Robbianne Mackin and Dave Jasper, Susan Abdalla and Peter Stern, Kim White and Kurt Wolfgruber, and Donna Winston. Notably, in recent years, the annual gala has been attended and supported by a who’s who of the East End, including Alec Baldwin, Billy Joel, Nicole Miller and Kim Taiple, Patricia Duff, Louis Bacon, Susan and Louis Meisel, Jackie and Peter Schellbach, and the Wölffer Estate Vineyard family. The focus of this year’s fundraising is the state of water quality in the region. “The Group has been working for more than four decades to protect our bays, harbors, and drinking water on the East End,” stated the Group’s board chair, Katherine Leahy Birch. “In addition to bringing awareness to this critical issue, the financial support we receive for the event will help us make sure children can swim and fish in our coastal waters without getting ill, and we’ll always have fresh, clean water to drink.” Michelle Farmer of Michelle Farmer Collaborate with boutiques in Bridgehampton and Palm Beach, reflects on why many East Enders ought to be compelled to support the work of the Group. “The beauty of the Hamptons is breathtaking. It is a unique and spectacular place that I feel blessed to call my home. I support GFEE because they work tirelessly to preserve the delicate balance of local wildlife, water, and environment of the East End of Long Island.” If you live here, you are the beneficiary of their work whether it is reflected in the character and quality of the water you drink, the fish you may eat, or the water you swim in, or simply the enhancement to your own property value through their conservation efforts in maintaining a unique and beloved community, one like no other place on Earth. If you summer here and simply believe that we cannot let this special place become like just any place, then you also share the mission of the Group. And if you have not supported or patronized the Group for the East End in recent years, consider becoming a member of the Group, make a one-time donation, or attend the annual benefit. For more information, including on how to support the Group or attend Swing into Summer, please visit groupfortheeastend.org Until next time, I hope to see you at the Group for the East End’s annual gala, Swing Into Summer at the Bridge. The Best Parties Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal celebrated the 15th anniversary of The Tribeca Film Festival that they co-founded to help revitalize lower Manhattan. Jason Bateman, Kevin Spacey, Karolina Kurkova, real estate investor Steven Vornea, Sigourney Weaver, Katie Couric, Viola Davis, Paul Rudd, Jane Fonda, director Spike Lee, and Ethan Hawke were among those who attended the 200 screenings of movies, documentaries, short films, and a slew of sexy parties. James Franco, who premiered his latest film, King Cobra, about the rise of gay porn star Sean Paul Lockhart said, “I’m going to try to not let anyone put me in a box, and that certainly applies to the things I do outside of acting.” This annual cultural gathering allows filmmakers and artists to leave their mark through music, film, video games, and online work. This year’s top movies included The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea starring Jason Sudeikis, Jessica Biel, and Maisie Williams; A Hologram for the King with Tom Hanks; The Meddler featuring Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne; Mr. Church, starring Eddie Murphy; All We Had, which was directed by and stars Katie Holmes; Custody, starring Viola Davis; and director Logan Sandler and executive producer Randy Harris of Live Cargo, co-starring Dree Hemmingway, Keith Stanfield, Sam Dillion, and Leonard Earl Howze. The Hamptons Film Festival is always a highlight of the fall season and will start on October 6. hamptonsfilmfest.org

THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION Interview with Barbara Poliwoda, Regional Director By Jean Shafiroff
JS: Has the event been a big fund-raiser? BP: Since its inception, the Hamptons Heart Ball has raised over $10 million for the American Heart Association. The gala has been attended by hundreds of social, business, and community leaders, and it receives widespread media attention each year. JS: What does the American Heart Association do with the money it raises? BP: Donations to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are crucial for the fight against heart disease and strokes in communities across the United States. Gifts fund innovative research for the prevention and treatment of these devastating diseases, the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in America. And support enables us to fight for stronger public health policies, improve the quality of health care nationwide, and provide lifesaving information to all Americans. Only the United States government funds more research than the American Heart Association. In all, we spend nearly 80 cents of every dollar on research, education, and community outreach. JS: Where can someone go for support or information? BP: We have a fantastic website that has an extensive amount
Photo of Jean Shafiroff by Michael Paniccea
JS: Can you tell us about the upcoming 20th anniversary gala in the Hamptons? BP: On June 25th, we will celebrate the twentieth anniversary Hamptons Heart Ball. The event is widely recognized as one of the premier philanthropic and festive events in the Hamptons. An elegant and diverse representation of the social, corporate, and medical communities of the Hamptons, Long Island, and New York City, the event will celebrate the community’s support of the life-saving mission of the American Heart Association. This year we are honoring you, Jean, along
with legendary cardio-thoracic surgeon and professor, Dr. Frank Spencer. We will also give a tribute to all the past honorees and chairs. Some of our past honorees include Christie Brinkley and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The gala promises to be very exciting! We will have a great cocktail hour, an exquisite dinner, a terrific auction, fabulous dancing, and great entertainment.
Barbara Poliwoda
Jean Shafiroff: What are some things the public should know about the American Heart Association? Barbara Poliwoda: While medical technology has made tremendous strides in curing illnesses in the last few decades, heart disease remains what it has been for a long, long time: the nation’s No. 1 killer. We are the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. We were founded by six cardiologists in 1924, and our organization now includes more than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters. We fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide critical tools and information to save and improve lives. Our nationwide organization includes 156 local offices and more than 3,000 employees. We’re the nation’s leader in CPR training. We provide sciencebased treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals. We educate lawmakers, policymakers, and the public as we advocate for changes to protect and improve the health of our communities. Each year, stroke and heart disease kill more than 811,000 Americans. Some form of cardiovascular disease affects more than one in every three adult Americans.

Amanpuri: Thailand The WorlD’s Most Exclusive Hotel By Joe Alexander
Aerial View of Amanpuri
Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theatre, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton.
Aman Junkies Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and their six children along with Jason Statham and his fiancée, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, were among the rich and richer who made the 20-hour trip from NYC to Phuket, Thailand, this year. It’s a long flight, even on a private jet, but once you touch down, the magic carpet rolls out. We were met by a white-uniformed greeter from the Amanpuri, who escorted us to a chauffeured black BMW that whisked us to the hotel. Looking out the window, you see a poor third world country streaming by until you swing into the long, palm-lined drive to the resort’s enchanted garden. The teak buildings are built in the traditional Thai style with whimsically peaked and winged roofs. The architecture echoes the Royal Palace compound in Bangkok where King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara live. Frederic Varnier, the charming and erudite head honcho here for the past 15 years and members of his sarong-wearing staff meet
us, bowing in the time-honored greeting. Here you will find a collection of the world’s savvy cognoscenti who are called “Aman junkies” because of their loyalty to the brand. This list includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Kate Moss, Mick Jagger, Harrison Ford, Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
Adrian Zecha The Amanpuri was built by legendary hotelier Adrian Zecha in 1988. It was the first in the Aman Resort Group of hotels and resorts that now span the world from Turks and Caicos and Bali to Sri Lanka and Tibet. Zecha, Omar Amanat, and Vladislav Doronin own the Aman Resort Group. I wandered down hand-hewn stone steps surrounded by greenery to a tiny rock peninsula on the property. This idyllic spot, edged with swaying palm trees, overlooks Pansea Beach. The soundtrack was provided by a gentle wind and white caps rolling picturesquely against the boulders that create this stone

jetty. A young Thai girl led us to the outermost table, one of only four, perched eight feet above the sand and sea. She held back simple wooden chairs and placed pressed white linen napkins on our laps. The menu was something you would expect at Sant Ambroeus, not on a rock in Thailand. The chef proves masterful and the cuisine an unexpected delight: healthy, sophisticated, and scrumptious. Under a majestic palm tree acting as our umbrella, I looked out over the multi-blue-hued sea, feeling relaxed and comforted. This table exemplified the exquisite experience that is the Amanpuri.
Louis Tomlinson have all slept here as well as scores of others who don’t want to see their names in print. The management has been known to send out boats filled with security to bribe and shoo away the paparazzi who train their long lenses on the celebrity guests. Over the holidays they spied on Brangelina and reported that their son Pax had hurt his leg while jet skiing. When one of these villas goes on the market, it fetches $10 to $25 million.
Every detail at this flagship hotel is elegantly curated, from the fragrant, cool towels and the refreshing hibiscus teas that await you at every stop to the refined taste exercised in the execution of the pavilions and reception areas. The most extravagant way to stay here is in one of the 30 private villas that spread out over the hills looking down at the ocean. These range from a two-bedroom compound with a private pool and separate pavilions for dining and lounging for $3,800 a day to a grand eight-bedroom house with a live-in housekeeper and chef for $14K a night. The Pavilions For a romantic rendezvous, I’d suggest staying in one of the 40 glamorous stand-alone pavilions that face the sea and are near the beach, bar, pool, and restaurants. These rooms are spacious and well thought out; they also boast their own outdoor dining and lounging pagoda. The bedroom is a sleek dark wood cocoon with sliding teak doors and windows that either seal you in or open to the views of the sea and the tropical gardens that surround you. The twin bath and dressing rooms make it easy for a couple to get ready simultaneously. Every day brings a surprise: the Buddha in your bedroom is draped with a fresh frangipani lei, floating orchids fill your bathtub surrounded by lit candles, a package on your pillow bears a gift of a white silk scarf, white orchid plants punctuate your room, and fresh fruit and cookies are always left on a tray. Service is silent and they time it so you never see it happen.
Puri Naoki Although you can go into Phuket to eat, it’s easier to dine at the resort. Room service is swift, but we started every day with breakfast in the main pavilion facing the Olympic-sized, black-tiled pool that is surrounded by gray chaise lounges. The
food here is on a par with the Carlyle in NYC or the Rosewood in London, with freshly brewed coffees and teas and homemade breads and jams. There are lots of healthy choices: try the fresh fruit smoothies, egg white frittatas, or the openfaced Thai omelet. Yet, I couldn’t help but miss the lavish buffet breakfasts you find in European hotels, but the Amanpuri is far quieter than a normal five-star hotel and you never wait for anything. You can choose from three separate restaurants and cuisines. The Tiger restaurant serves Thai food, but if you want a hamburger, it’s done just like at home. The Italian restaurant offers perfect pastas and a heavenly tagliatelle lamb ragu. Puri Naoki serves Japanese fare: order the sushi, grilled yellow fin tuna, and the tangy hot and sour soup with floating shrimp. To work off the calories head to the hotel’s state-ofthe-art gym, which sits atop a bluff. Every treadmill offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the sea and long stretches of beach. You can hire a trainer to put you through your paces or there’s a yoga master who conducts a class in the mornings. Sweat in Nirvana. Recover in the elegant spa. It is a quiet oasis and all they want to do is pamper you. Order up the Royal Thai massage, invigorating facials with local herbs, or expert mani-pedis. My favorite treatment was the foot massage with

Andaman Sea salt and roasted coconuts. After lunch, nap in the shade, then rent jet skis and go exploring. All watersports are offered here, from snorkeling and waterskiing to sailing and paragliding. As I swam in the sea, it was hard to envision the tsunami that hit the area twelve years ago, in 2004. Thankfully, few signs remain of the devastation that it wrought.
Later, the lapping waves lulled us to sleep in our beds. Amanpuri, the stuff dreams are made of. aman.com 66.76.324.333 amanpuri@amanresorts.com
Between 4:30 and 5:30 there is a not-to-be-missed ritual in the teahouse overlooking the pool. A gaggle of maidens make traditional Thai pancakes, the size of silver dollars, over a charcoal stove while a musician softly plays an indigenous instrument. These tiny treats are beyond yummy; try the banana, mango and chocolate, or go rogue and have one made with sweet onions. They melt in your mouth so you have to be careful not to eat too many. The ladies also serve cold ginger tea with mango juice and offer pumpkin and banana bread and coconut cookies if you want to switch things up. Luckily, tea time is exactly one hour or you’d need to wear a caftan to the beach. We went swimming at sunset; the water was warm and the sun’s last rays reflected off the ocean as we body surfed and played in the waves like happy seals.

What’s Doing in Phuket
Tiger Kingdom
By Joe Alexander
Tiger Kingdom You have two choices at Tiger Kingdom: suspend good judgment and enter a caged area with a large group of playful tigers or stay behind the bars. Naturally we went in. For 2,500 baht, 90 U.S. dollars, these keepers allow you to pose and pet three sizes of Indochinese tigers: small, medium, and large. And when I say large, I mean 400 pounds. The keepers ease you into a tightly fenced area through double gated cages. That’s when I should have turned around, but I pressed on. The experience with the baby cubs was cute, the teens were thrilling, but the parents were scary, especially when a gang of six monster sized cats started fighting in one corner of the pen while we were sitting 20 feet away stroking their grandfather. Our two so-called trainers carried slim sticks and that was it between us and the tigers. We escaped quickly but not before we took a stream of selfies holding a tiger’s tail. On the way out I jokingly asked if anyone had ever been killed or
mauled. The owner said, “No, but a man did get bitten in the leg last October and is coming back to face his fears this year.” Great news! It was exciting but I’m not sure I’d have risked it if I’d heard that story first. These tigers are definitely not drugged; they were wide-awake and hungry. We went at 5 pm and stuck around to watch them tear through huge slabs of raw meat at 6 for dinner. I would suggest going right after breakfast when, hopefully, they’re feeling less frisky. I felt safer visiting a family of gorillas in the jungles of Rwanda that we weren’t allowed to touch and where the gamesmen carried machine guns. tigerkingdom.com
Zip-Lining at Hanuman I decided to go on an eco-adventure and headed to Phuket’s ultimate jungle experience, zip-lining at Hanuman. I put on my harness, strapped on my helmet, and climbed 30 minutes up steep, rocky terrain to a ladder that led to a platform on a tree.

Before I could say wait or stop, I was hooked onto cable and pushed off a landing from the tallest tree I’ve ever seen, whizzzzzzz. I was too petrified to scream. Then, presto, I landed effortlessly on another platform wrapped around another gargantuan tree. In the end it was easy, fun, and exhilarating. We continued to zip around the jungle and trek over shaky wooden bridges. When we had to zoom straight down, I felt a lump in my throat but in truth anyone from 13 to 80 could enjoy this experience that made me feel like Tarzan or Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark. flyinghanuman.com

This is a brutal sport and inevitably someone ends up bloodied and being carried from the ring. You can’t come to Phuket without being solicited to see a “sexy show.” The problem is there’s nothing sexy or fun about these ping-pong shenanigans in the grungy, sad clubs that line Bargate Street, the town’s infamous red-light district where they sell “sex” at a discount. In truth The Box in NYC does it better. What is fun is the notorious Lady Boys show at Simon’s Cabaret. Over 80 transexual performers dress up like Ziegfeld show girls and cavort through campy routines in a fast paced hour-long show. Six of these lady boys are real stars, who look and move like a cross between delicate geishas and leggy Vegas show girls. The costumes are as elaborate as anything Josephine Baker ever wore and they change clothes for every number with alarming speed. The Chinese fan dance was particularly convincing but the serious fun is in the side alley where 80 ladies and a dozen chorus boys line up for selfies. For 200 baht ($6) you get to pose with the lady of your choice. Once on the street, these ladies get very aggressive and their voices and manner are anything but feminine. This is where they make their tips and they will do anything to get your attention. A few of them are “real beauties” as Andy Warhol used to say. I got the feeling some of these ladies would be willing to work after work. phuket-simoncabaret.com

Finding Avalon in Palm Springs
Avalon, Palm Springs
By Anthony Giampetruzzi
C
ontemporary modern is king in the Hamptons, but those in the know will attest that the East End is far from the mod homeland. Palm Springs, California, took that trophy long ago, and, in recent years, the statuette has taken on considerable shine. The legendary weekend getaway for the jet set of L.A. and its luxe environs, this fabled Coachella Valley oasis is once again attracting the easygoing chic to its posh but devil-maycare hotels, the eager-to-impress to its photo op parties, and would-be aesthetes to take a crash course in what has to be the
largest concentration of mid-century modern architecture and design in the United States. You can cram a lot into a long weekend in this easy-to-get-to destination … or you may just want to plant yourself at a pool and breathe in the ultra clean desert air before taking in a party or an evening of hotel bar hopping (the Amigo Room at the Ace Hotel is not to be missed). Regardless of your poison, there are some must-dos.
Kelly Wearstler at Avalon
Where to stay Easy. The newly-named Avalon Hotel Palm Springs has been sitting in stunning contrast to its desert setting since the 1930s, nestled between downtown’s main drag and the foot hills of the rugged San Jacinto Mountains. Its Spanish architecture is punctuated by a series of secluded, private villas, most of which surround one of the property’s three exclusive pools. The Avalon prides itself on “holding an affinity for oneoffs, anomalies, and the irrefutable allure of a personal touch — our trademarks are small batched. Think of us as your own private hideaway. All you have to do is stay.” Do it. Social Life
Refreshed at Chi Chi
Consider a bungalow or premium courtyard studio for easy access to the best pools in Palm Springs; extreme peoplewatching from the privacy of your own room; and proximity to Chi Chi, which serves up some of the freshest West Coast cuisine in the desert. Renowned designer Kelly Wearstler’s careful touch is experienced everywhere with modern baroque furnishings and charismatic finishes. From custom terry robes and Italian designer linens to exceptional Momo bathroom amenities from Davines, and a curated minibar, the rooms wow. Whether you are relaxing in your digs, lounging by a pool, or seeking a more formal sit-down, Chi Chi restaurant’s specialized menus and innovative Latin standard dishes will leave you feeling both satisfied and refreshed. Whatever you decide, don’t miss the grilled chicken and watercress salad by the pool for lunch and the seabass veracruzanna for dinner. Estrella Spa is named for the original hotel property where a full menu of the usual (although not the ordinary) is supported by nods to alchemy, holistic health, and global herbal medicine. Where to eat and drink Palm Springs is on the cusp of becoming as important a destination for food as it is for its glam. Workshop Kitchen and Bar is a case in point. The elegantly spartan interior is supported by a menu with local farm-to-table options ranging from artisanal smalls, organic kumquats, Murray Farm’s cherries, pepitas, balsamico, pumpkin seed oil, pecorino romano — insane!) to mouth watering plates, Temecula Farm’s honey and lavender glaze, duck confit lentils, bloomsdale spinach, rhubarb — explosion!). What to do Though not on the scale of the manses on the East End, the modern architecture of Palm Springs is no less impressive — mainly because this is where today’s top architects and designers draw their inspiration. Don’t attempt a self-guided tour through the dense neighborhoods, especially if you want to find homes of bygone celebs. Donald Wexler, Richard Neutra, and GeorgeAnderson are all well covered during a Palm Springs modern tour. Be sure to make a reservation well in advance. Though not for the faint of heart, the Palm Springs aerial tramway, commonly known as the Palm Springs tram, offers the best views in the greater Palm Springs area from atop San Jacinto Peak. Bring a jacket: daytime desert weather doesn’t apply here, where you’ll likely find patches of snow. Visit the bar for a high-altitude bev. By all means, shop and prepare yourself for the very real possibility of shipping home some modern treasures from the likes of Le Corbusier, Eames, Saarinen, and Prouve. The inventory here is amazing if not overwhelming. eff Muhs is a painter, sculptor, and designer living and working in Southampton. Muhs is represented in New York by Lyons Wier Gallery and Cheryl Hazan Gallery, Brintz Galleries in Palm Beach, Joan McLoughlin Gallery in San Francisco, and McNeill Art Group in Southampton. His work will be on view this summer with McNeill Art Group at Art Southampton, from July 7 through July 11.

Kevin Berlin: You have big plans for this summer… Jeff Muhs: I’m putting together a new series of paintings that will be exhibited at a number of international art fairs this summer and am working on a commissioned public sculpture for eastern Long Island. It will be a large-scale public work, in concrete, which I feel fits in nicely with my 50-year celebration of my life’s work.

KB: It’s your 50th birthday this June. Happy Birthday! Has this inspired your new works? JM: At 50, I’ve been doing this a while. I feel that the work I’m doing now is certainly built on all that I’ve done before and really bringing it into a culmination. It should answer the question of where am I artistically, and how I can use the developments I’ve been working on all my life to propel my art to the next level.
in some cases. The new paintings are huge in scale and go by the name of an exhibition that I had at Lions Wier Gallery in Manhattan. Slip Stream was the title of the show, which refers to the feelings of the gestures and the ways that I am applying the paint to the canvas. The brush is pushing through the paint and leaving a slip stream of paint in its wake. I’m just running with this new energized body of work that I’m doing. Once it happened I never looked back.
KB: Some of the new works include some very largescale paintings. JM: Well, one of the things I’m doing is pressing the limits of my works artistically and physically. Physically being the scale

when I was building my home studio. I had never used concrete before. I needed countertops and a fireplace for my home and figured out a way that I could make them the way that I wanted, and when I realized the potential of the material, that led to the concrete sculpture. I also designed and built the furniture for my home: people became interested it and it began to be shown around in New York and Milan. Again borne out of necessity. KB: I’ve visited your home and studio, and it’s incredible to believe you built it from scratch. Tell us more about it. JM: I was able to design my studio according to my work style. In addition to the painting studio, I have a full fabrication shop. In building most of the home/studio myself I learned different disciplines and materials that I now incorporate into my work.

KB: Unlike so many artists who move to Long Island to live and work, you were born and grew up right here in Southampton. How has that influenced your work? JM: I think that being born and raised here, a unique commu-
nity, makes me in many ways a product of this environment. The natural beauty of the area is always drawing artists here for good reason. It’s an inspiring place to live with the open space and water and the light that we are known to have here, but it’s that and the artistic legacy, including some of the most influential artists of the 20th century living and working here; the proximity to Manhattan, where I attended the School of Visual Arts; all the people who are involved in art: artists, gallerists, collectors who are out here. I am in a way a product of those factors. KB: Some of your childhood experiences here in the area made a strong impression. JM: From an early age, my father, a hunting and fishing guide, instilled in me an intimate knowledge of our local natural environment. Through the 1990s I lived on the barrier beach in Westhampton. In December of 1992, a nor’easter raged into eastern Long Island and nearly wiped out a five-mile stretch of land. The Atlantic Ocean connected with Moriches Bay and many homes were completely destroyed and others were left

KB: Any prediction for the next 50 years? JM: I get the chance to occasionally spend some time with artists who are significantly older than myself and that have been making art for significantly longer than I have been. I feel that the secret to creativity is revealed in perspective over time. Invariably my question to them is always ‘Can you continue to go to the well for 50, 80 years, a lifetime?’ The answer is ‘Yes,’ and I’m looking forward to the future of doing this to my full capacity.

barely standing or buried by the sand and water. These homes, telephone poles, and trees were washed away, leaving a unique, barren landscape with 360 degrees of unobstructed horizon. As a fisherman, I began to spend most of my time exploring the new landscape by kayak. Virgin marshes and tidal flats exposed themselves and the unobstructed vistas revealed the amazing beauty of light, sky, water, and horizon. From this perspective I witnessed the particular scenes and extraordinary events that continued to shape my artistic aesthetic.

Kevin Berlin: What inspired the film? Michael Schindhelm: So there are a number of points. First of all, having lived for almost 30 years under communist rule in East Germany and also the Soviet Union, and actually having moved the same year that Uli Sigg went the first time to China in 1979. The Soviet Union, at the time when the Afghanistan war started was in steep decline and at the same time also China was about to change after a mild step. I have a very great interest in this period because I do think that many things we encounter today, in terms of politics, in terms of social and economic change worldwide, have been triggered there during this period. And I think in particular China played an instrumental role.
other film on the making of the Olympic games stadium Bird’s Nest in China featuring Ai Weiwei who was the go between for architects from Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron, and the Chinese authorities. And the reason why I shot this film is because I thought that the Bird’s Nest will be a symbol for this new China. And I would not only focus on architecture but at the same time try to show how this country tries to gear up for the Olympics to make it a platform to show the world how China sees itself in the 21st century. And Uli Sigg was already part of this film because he was sort of behind the scenes, arranging contact with Ai Weiwei and the architects. And that’s why I got to know him almost fifteen years ago and know more about his collection how he had collected and the way how he had encountered China, how he learned about China. That he spent so much time there,
KB: Your work has also touched on this theme in the past. MS: This is also the reason why I shot some years ago an-
li Sigg was born in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1946. He is a business journalist, entrepreneur, art collector, patron, castle owner, rower (he was Swiss champion in the eights discipline at the age of 22), and a former Swiss ambassador to China, North Korea, and Mongolia, from 1995 to 1998. Uli Sigg began to collect Chinese contemporary art in the 1990s. As a result, he accumulated the world’s largest and most significant collection in this field within a few decades. He has recently fulfilled his promise of giving the collection back to China. The M+ museum in Hong Kong, featuring the Uli Sigg collection, is scheduled to open in 2019.

ichael Schindhelm was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1960, and works as a writer, filmmaker, performing art expert, and cultural advisor to several international organizations. From 1979 to 1984, he studied at the International University of Voronezh, graduating with a master of science in quantum chemistry (cum laude). His three documentary films include The Chinese Lives of Uli Sigg (2016), Bird’s Nest – Herzog & de Meuron in China, co-directed with Christoph Schaub (2008); and Chants of the Steppes (2004). that he eventually came to be there. We befriended each other during this time because I think we felt we had something in common also in taking on adventures personally. We stayed also in touch after I agreed to go to Dubai for a few years and to assist the government of Dubai in setting up an authority for culture and arts. Uli visited me there and we talked again there and talked more about his collection: that he wanted to bring it back to China one day and maybe the time would be ripe to do it soon.
KB: When did you first see the Uli Sigg collection? MS: I went to see Uli Sigg and his wife, Rita, at Mauensee in Switzerland several times since our first encounter for
Bird’s Nest in 2003. He took me around and showed me also in storage. And the collection itself was a really great storyteller, really a source of information and of storytelling about Chinese recent history and modernization and the artists who had created this work are really witnesses of this extraordinary change in economics and politics in this social domain and that is why I felt using the artwork for telling the story both of Uli’s life and at the same time the modernization of China that would be a great adventure. KB: It’s a very ambitious synthesis, because it’s not only a portrait of the artist, portrait of the collector, but also you cover 40 years of very fast moving history. How did manage to unify everything once you understood the story? MS: I think a major point was that I had to re-enact a time and a physical environment which has disappeared in the meantime.
Uli Sigg with artwork, The Newspaper Reader, by Ai Weiwei, The Chinese Lives of Uli Sigg, film still, Filip Zumbrunn.
KB: So a lot of factors came together. MS: In 2008/2009 when I was also working in Hong Kong together with the architect Rem Koolhaas and we were drafting a master plan for the so-called West Kowloon Cultural District and the M+ museum in Hong Kong, which is now about to present the collection of Uli Sigg. When Uli Sigg in 2012 a few years later finally decided to bring the collection to this museum, and made the deal with the M+ museum in 2012, I found now that his story is really complete because from the ’79 incident onwards I would be able to tell the full story, including also the outlook of what is going to happen with his legacy, his collection, after the present time being on display in Hong Kong, from 2018 onwards in the M+ museum.
ART
KB: I was first in China in 1989 and then again in 2009 and it was a completely different world. MS: I can imagine. It was really interesting to see that I had a few young Chinese people on the film set shooting in China, and they were traveling with me, and they were totally puzzled. They had never seen certain things. They had never heard cer-
tain things like we were dealing with in the film so you could really see that this young generation, even though they were smart and educated, they didn’t know much about the history. So that’s why creating a kind of tapestry of the historical development of China over the last 30 or 40 years was the objective. I used the artwork as a tool of communication, and we were also lucky to find some footage nobody has used before from the early ’80s showing public spaces, showing daily life in China in an extraordinary way. All of this helped to create a kind of collage which allowed to re-enact a kind of historic past which has kind of disappeared. KB: You have a very impressive cast including Uli Sigg and many artists, and most of them are noted for being very private. Yet you are able to communicate and bring out a lot. Do you have some thoughts about how to work with such private people? MS: I think first of all what helps is that I met these artists who are slightly older or slightly younger than me. We have

I remember vividly when I lived in East Germany in the early ’90s that suddenly some of these kind of East German public faces of the communist time disappeared within just a few years, due to a very rapid modernization and acceleration of things because also there was a lot of money which suddenly available in particular from West Germany in order to modernize the country by all means. That is why I always thought young people, for example of the generation of my children, actually have no idea anymore what Berlin looked like in 1990 or 1980. And in the same way the young generation of Chinese people and Westerners have no idea what China looked like in 1980 or 1990 or even early 2000s.

to some extent also something in common in terms of political history coming out of the same world system, of course the communists in China were different than within the Soviet Union but we had those things in common. Sometimes I was even able to talk to them in Russian because they would at least understand some phrases if they wouldn’t speak English and very often these guys don’t speak English and Ai Weiwei is still rather an exception in this generation of the people that are between 50 and 60. KB: That’s an advantage. MS: Yes, already this helps. Also just speaking about history, if someone like a Chinese person of their age today speaks about the environment of the ’70s or ’80s before the real new era started they of course it makes a difference if they speak to somebody who has no clear passage coming from their country, or if they speak to somebody who has some idea of what it means under this communist rule. I think this helps to create a kind of intimacy between them and myself and we
spent a lot of time together to not necessarily speak so much about their work, but rather about their life. I found this very intriguing to speak about the life of people who have really undergone this extraordinary change and transformation. KB: In the film, Ai Weiwei suggests that any artwork that is not questioning authority is a fake. There are sensitive issues regarding politics. Did you have a special approach in the film to address some of those issues? MS: Of course you are always in a dilemma if you do something about China, because you want to be sincere, you want to have an autonomous and independent position and at the same time you may want to show it off to people in this country and this is only possible if you find some way to get into the country and I think there is no real sustainable way to do it illegally. On the other hand there is no way to collaborate directly with these authorities as long as censorship is involved. And in the last 40 years historically China was sometimes in a very difficult situation and it needed to be addressed.

Also, you cannot do a film about Uli Sigg starting somewhere in the late ’70s at the death of Mao and ending somewhere in the 21st century and not mention Tiananmen Square for example. So in other words you have to address these politically very relevant aspects of world history, in particular Chinese history and this is something very sensitive to Chinese authorities. KB: And so you did. MS: We had to do this and we had to address this and I was very glad and even surprised to see sometimes how open the artists themselves spoke about their experiences. There is one artist for example who’s speaking intently about the time he was as a student involved in Tiananmen Square, the student protests of 1989 in general, and how extremely frustrated they were afterwards and almost lost and without any perspective. So you can really see that not only oppositional activists but also influential artists open up to these issues in front of a camera knowing that they may also risks things, in particular now that the current situation in China has become even more sensitive and more complicated. I had to show all of this. KB: Would you consider the film a work of art in itself ? MS: Yes I would consider it this way and I made it also this
way. You may know that I am a writer, a novelist, and an artistic writer and that’s why even if it is a documentary in many ways I try to sort of tell a story that often has artistic dimension. The way I see it is that this collage of different layers of materials really allow to tell a story where it seems a blur between a documentary and also fiction. Because as I said before I wanted to re-enact the time and period or the environment that had disappeared. So I had to reconstruct this and so we shot for example also spaces which looked like the spaces where Uli Sigg lived: factories, karaoke bars, towns, hotel rooms, spaces which seemingly disappeared from the landscape of China today but we still found those spaces. I had a location scout so that’s why we really went also to certain spaces to shoot a little bit like in a fiction movie and so it was meant to be a reconstruction of something real. So that’s why I think documentary sometimes involves today these type of things. KB: The film has already been screened in Hong Kong. I understand that there are plans for the film to come to North America? MS: Absolutely. I mean first of all we are still not selling the film in the market because we want to make it to the film festivals and as long as this is still open we will not be offering it to the market. Because some of the most prestigious film

KB: You screened your film The Bird’s Nest in Long Island at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center. MS: You must know Robert Wilson. We did a screening of the film in the Parrish Art Museum around the corner. So that was really quite nice that we had the combination where I gave a talk about Dubai at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center and also in the old Parrish Art before Herzog & de Meuron opened the new museum I had a screening of my Birds Nest film in 2008. And yes, we definitely want to make it to the US with this film too. I think it’s very important because there is this kind of particular type of relationship between the US and China, and even more importantly I think and believe that in a global world we have to understand better one another and help sometimes to understand alien cultures. This is what we always wanted to and art is about.
KB: A bridge motif was important in the film. MS: You see probably in the film that I have used several times bridges. In the beginning of the film you see that we are walking over the bridge to Uli Sigg’s house and in the end of the film you see Uli Sigg walking over a Chinese bridge towards a kind of future. And also in the film you kind of see bridges again and again because Uli Sigg is this kind of builder of bridges. And in my understanding, I think he is this also as an art collector and art is a type of bridge between alien cultures, and that’s why I think it is very important to show this type of film in America. festivals, let’s say Toronto are very instrumental for documentaries, as long as this is not decided we will not sell it because those film festivals accept only films which have not been released publicly. In Hong Kong it was a private event hosted by Art Basel, it was not a public release, so that’s why we are waiting for a response from some of those festivals and once we have received this response we will also sell or offer the film to distributors in other countries including the United States.

Uli Sigg: While I may deserve your congrats for the donation, the merits for the film are all with Michael Schindhelm. He had the idea, pulled together the resources, and then filmed with great sensitivity what we could restore of my past in China. The film creates all kinds of responses. Basically I am inundated with compliments which ought to go to him. I perceive it to be just as much an interesting documentary about an important epoch of Chinese history as one about me, and so does the majority of the viewers. KB: For you personally, what is the importance of the documentary film? US: Michael forced upon me the discipline to reconstruct my past in China, and it is as good a visual document of my past as it can ever get. And of course I enjoy what the artists say about me: how could it otherwise ever have been forced out of them? KB: At what point along the way did you realize the significant cultural importance of your collection? US: Fairly early in my collecting, when I gave myself a new focus: institutional rather than that of a private collector.
I always believed China would become something big and so would its best artists and its art. And so would its artistic testimony be of importance to the nation itself. Yet where could it be found in the future if no one paid attention? So I gave myself the mission to collect it. KB: You’ve said that you prefer to see yourself as a researcher of China rather than as a collector and Chinese contemporary art. Thoughts? US: Through Chinese contemporary art I find another access to my ultimate study object, which is China itself. I studied it through extensive business experience, through diplomacy, and then through this intense interaction with the Chinese artists. They allowed me to see a different Chinese reality, one that for many years resided in the underbelly of China. Yes, I did acquire some of the results of this research which made me a collector, but this was rather a means than an end — at least for much of my collecting time. KB: What’s next? US: Currently I am busy with digesting the enormous response by the media and the public to my exhibitions in Hong Kong and Bern and to the film — pleasant yet very time-consuming! Only now I can get started to dream up my next big thing. Social Life

August 20: Sweet Poison is a solo exhibition for Pamela Wilson. “Pamela Wilson has built a reputation for works of art that transcend the commonplace to enter the realm of the sublime and otherworldly. She develops exceptionally realistic images that evoke moods, dreams, and memories inspired by real life, and which create a remarkably compelling narrative. She believes that letting ourselves explore the inherent ‘distortions’ in reality is part of what gives us heart, and balance. Addressing ‘beauty’ in a painting feels too passive, and what she is seeking is a psychological moment, a different kind of beauty. She has much to say of the sweet absurdities, which may be great challenges, that we must often endure that force us to become our unique selves.” October 8: Women Painting Women is the third annual juried exhibition. Visit the website at rjdgallery.com/exhibitions for submission information. This is an opportunity for artists to share their voice with other artists and collectors and to help the global conscience toward creating equality for women in the arts.

ary DePersia has been a fixture of East End real estate since 1995. A member of a rare and influential club, he has participated in over $2 billion in transactions, a number that makes him chuckle since he didn’t sell his first house until almost a year and a half into his career. As we jump into the 2016 selling season, he is bringing pure luxury to the market.
48 MADISON, SAG HARBOR To say this property is magnificent is an understatement. A modern 13,000-square-foot edifice, on more than three levels of living space, this renovated early 19th-century Methodist church, has stood sentry over legendary Sag Harbor for nearly two centuries. Situated on its own beautifully landscaped half acre, the dramatic common rooms, wonderfully spaced bedrooms, uncompromising quality, and superb amenities rise to over 50 feet, finishing yet higher at its unique fourth-story bell tower with views over the harbor to the North Fork and beyond. An infinity edge, heated, gunite pool with submerged floating spa are among the updates that have introduced this stunner to a new time. The renovation is compliments of a
masterful collaboration between Bates Masi + Architects, Lettieri Construction, and Gregg Bleam Landscape Architects. It is by far one of the most thrilling contemporary homes ever to be offered for sale in Sag Harbor, or anywhere else in the Hamptons for that matter. With completion slated for early 2017, there is still time to infuse your own personality into the finished estate. Offered at $19,500,000

Unrivaled Wellness and Luxury Living in Brooklyn’s Pacific Park By Ferris Sashins

W
ellness is a trend that seems to be top of mind for a lot of people these days. Between gym memberships and boutique fitness classes there is no shortage of what is available to stay in peak condition. While it’s easy to leave the house to get in some physical activity, a new trend is emerging that helps people achieve their wellness and fitness goals right at home, within the property of their own buildings. Leading the pack in healthy living buildings is 550 Vanderbilt, the first condominium in Pacific Park, Brooklyn’s newest neighborhood. 550 Vanderbilt sits within eight acres of active green space and no detail has been overlooked when it comes to catering to the health and wellness of residents. Designed by Rick Cook of COOKFOX (architect of 150 Charles in the West Village and the soaring One Bryant Park), the building design reflects a strong connection to nature, with plush green spaces strategically placed to help relieve stress
and promote healthy living. The building is connected to Pacific Park and has stunning views of the Thomas Balsley– designed verdant landscape from the lobby, hallways, residences, and outdoor spaces. 550 Vanderbilt also has a landscaped rooftop terrace with outdoor cooking, seating, and DIY planting areas, the latter giving residents the opportunity to grow their own herbs and vegetables. In addition to the connection to green space, the building also offers a robust fitness center designed by trainer Jay Wright of The Wright Fit, an industry leader in designing progressive fitness facility concepts. The fitness center, flooded with natural light, is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment, including Peloton bikes that offer users live, highenergy, interactive spin classes without leaving their homes. Everything residents need to stay fit is right in the building, making it easy to forgo a traditional gym membership.

43 Suffolk Street, Sag Harbor

here is a new standard of luxury in Sag Harbor Village: 43 Suffolk Street. “This extraordinary brand-new home combines everything we love about the Historic section of Sag Harbor, all recreated in an 18th century shell with all the modern interior comforts of 21st-century design and technology,” says Mark Baron. Associate Brokers with Brown Harris Stevens, Mark Baron and Chris Burnside, have combined talents to form one of the most effective and formidable luxury sales and rental teams on the East End. And, while their offerings cover the entire Hamptons marketplace, 43 Suffolk is a harbinger of great things to come from them throughout the region.
Located on the premier residential lane in the Village, the understated façade belies the interior’s grand and gracious scale. The spectacular volumes of the house create both a true sense of open living and intimacy and serenity. It has sweeping loft-like spaces, elegant Venetian plaster walls in every room, and wide-plank hardwood floors, which have been treated with a centuries-old organic Swedish finish. With haute-design lighting and high ceilings throughout, the property showcases the latest in smart-home technology. In fact, the entire house is wired for automation utilizing the Control 4 smart-control system with smart-phone integration. Additionally, remote-control monitoring of temperature,

gas fireplaces, Sonos sound system, radiant heat, and security make for extreme comfort and safety. Every detail is artistically hand-made. Designed by a renowned architect, built by a master builder, and crafted by one of the country’s best woodworkers, all using the finest materials available, 43 Suffolk is magnificent. The hints of old are throughout as well. For instance, Egyptian revival window moldings inspired by the Sag Harbor Old Whaler’s Church, which was designed by Minard Lafever, an influential American architect of churches and houses in the United States in the mid-19th century. It offers over 7,000 square feet, five en-suite bedrooms, including a second ground-floor master, main living room with walls of custom windows, and an enormous 29-foothigh soaring central, stone, wood-burning hearth. It features an intimate, white-oak, paneled library; a superb professional kitchen with a butler’s kitchen attached; and an open dining hall. A vast lounge with fireplace can be found on the mezzanine level. But let’s get back to the kitchen: First, while all the Italian statuary marble throughout the house is sourced from a single block, the book-matched Italian marble kitchen countertop is fabricated to two inches thick. The primary kitchen offers a Wolf range and Marvel wine refrigerator. Meanwhile, a professional chef ’s catering kitchen has a duplicate of every amenity and appliance offered in the primary kitchen. Among the amenities are a Miele espresso machine, a glassfaced Sub Zero refrigerator, and hardware produced in Birmingham, England, and plated with sterling silver. Soft-close drawers and Blum soft-close hinges are throughout.
Upstairs, a generously sized master walk-in closet with custom soft-close cabinetry and his and hers leather watch/ring holders adorn the master suite. The master bath features Thassos marble, double-vanity sinks, a soaking tub, and a spacious shower enclosure. Vanity cabinets feature hand-blown frosted glass with a blue hue, and built-in mirrored television. All bathrooms are equipped with comforting radiant-floor heating. Reclaimed wood veneer imported from Belgium runs along the staircase leading to the lower level. There you’ll find a modern pass-through gas-burning fireplace with a bluestone hearth sourced from Pennsylvania. An elegant glass display wine room with separate Edge Star wine refrigeration units for maximum temperature control will ensure libations are always top notch. A glass display room carport with a custom-made state-of-the-art hydraulic lowering lift makes this level particularly dramatic. The entire level enjoys a central recirculation ventilation system with humidity and dehumidifier controls, while a walk-out from this level uses a thermal sensor to automatically activate radiant heat in the snow. Did we mention that honed quartz absolute tile in the expansive laundry room? The professionally landscaped grounds offer complete privacy while wonderfully curated specimen trees, broad lawns, and a stunning heated gunite pool and summer shower complete this Eden. Surrounded by antique herringbone brick garden walls, a proper stainless outdoor grilling center, and a large radiant-heated stone patio will attract family and guests. With combined experience of over $2 billion in sales and rentals and over 25 years of experience in the luxury market, they offer unparalleled experience, expertise, and service from Southampton to Montauk in every range of the market with a special focus on new top-of-the-line turn-key properties in the most prestigious Hamptons locations. 43 Suffolk is one of the grandest of examples. avier Robles is a Peruvian-born architect, designer, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of international experience. His passion for architecture, design, and art — melded with cultural references — is evident in his vast portfolio of high-profile projects. Robles was named one of New York Spaces magazine’s Top 50 Designers for 2013 and his work has been widely published globally. This vacation home in East Hampton was exquisitely renovated by restoring the existing shell throughout the façade, as well as by adding new mezzanine railing, millwork, carpeting, lighting, hardware, and finishes to the interior. The
main concept was to unify and create a coherent and playful volumetric composition in an existing spec house built in the late 1990s. Mixing large white or neutral painted walls with unfinished painted wood siding and blue-gray accent walls, niches, or rooms was a way to reflect the oceanfront and the scenic landscape surrounding Heller Lane. Sarah Young: Describe your most favorite features of the house. Javier Robles: The house is located in the middle of an almost square lot surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Its location in the site resembles the Villa Savoye in France by Le Corbusier, and that for an architect was a very attractive starting point. The house is completely exposed on all sides, so there is a strong relationship between the land, lot, landscape, and the interiors. SY: Are there any special considerations when designing a beach house? JR: Yes, of course a beach house calls for a more relaxed atmosphere, a casual and easy lifestyle. should reflect that relaxed spirit. In this particular project [Heller Lane], the house is completely open to all sides of the lot and it has a very strong connection between the outside and the inside. SY: Which designers or architects from the past have influenced you and your own aesthetic? JR: Le Corbusier, Lina Bo Bardi, Mies van der Rohe, Carlo Scarpa, Alvaro Siza, Tadao Ando. SY: Do you have a favorite color palette? JR: Grays, blues, metallic colors in general mixed with earthy or patinated colors and textures. I tend to mix and create a color palette based on the project concept and context.
SY: How would you describe your design style? JR: Modernist with clean design language but never sterile, which people have also described as “manly and sexy.” I am very sensitive to light, both natural and artificial. I strive to create spaces where lighting is one of the main elements that helps me define the sensorial experiences of a given room or environment.
Fran Parente Photography
SY: What place does art play in your overall design? JR: A very important role indeed. A house without art for me is a house without soul. Art — whether contemporary, modern, or classic — brings a unique spirit to the house and fills the space in a different way. In most cases it becomes an almost metaphorical experience: the space becomes alive and there is a special connection with its inhabitants. Art, artifacts, objects in general don’t need to be expensive collector’s pieces; they can simply be curated to reflect the owner’s personality or identity.

Mill House Inn

ome places never get old. The Hamptons can be counted among them. Let’s start with the shoreline here. This area offers world-famous beaches: one of America’s Gold Coasts along with Palm Beach and Malibu. Main Beach in East Hampton, for example, is routinely ranked among the top ten in the country, providing the perfect blend of nature and an expertly constructed man-made environment. Wealthy summertime residents flock to beaches that are protected by a conservation easement dating back over 300 years. This makes Main Beach a great place for star-spotting, since many actors often visit this sandy stretch for its idyllic setting within a small village. Towering sand dunes and blue water are irresistible. Then there’s the actual village of East Hampton. Voted “America’s most beautiful village” by National Geographic, the approach from 27 begins with a lovely block-long pond, flanked by rows of historical inns, green acreage, specialty boutiques and, of course, a landmark windmill or two. East Hampton hosts us this weekend. Luxurious B&Bs and beloved historical homes sit beside chic boutiques along Main Street, with galleries, antique shops, museums, and premium restaurants all adding dimension and vibrancy. Palatial estates and sprawling retreats blend seamlessly with coastal scenery

expressed through beaches and fragrant wine vineyards, making for a sublime destination. Before settling in, we stop along the way at Smokin’ Wolf BBQ. This casual spot features such mouthwatering goodies as BBQ pulled duck with sautéed mushrooms and Asian sauce. For a more American classic choice, there’s smoked BBQ ribs or an all-natural half BBQ chicken. For a big appetite, the combination BBQ meat platter with two sides and corn bread is perfect. Pulled pork, brisket, Social Life
smoked sausage, pulled chicken, turkey, a quarter BBQ or a quarter roasted chicken make for a feast. We opt to eat outdoors and people-watch. It’s a fun way to bring in the weekend. Next, we head over to Main Street and straight into the driveway of the Mill House Inn, a boutique destination open year round. Upon entering, we are immediately charmed by the welcoming staff, fully poised to make every wish come to life. The décor is pristine white furnishings with a casual beach vibe and is graced with antique furnishings. We awaken on Saturday morning and take stock of the brisk air wafting in from our open window; just perfect for a stroll to the beach. Breakfast is included in our rate, and is an event here. The menu offers tasty and inventive choices, with a variety of berries, fresh yogurt, and fruits beautifully plated. There are a variety of teas and coffees, the latter brewed in a way that is unique to the inn. The Mill House provides an easy map with a walking trail that leads directly to the beach. As a gift, the inn provides delicious snacks: cookies made on the premises, kale chips, artisan cheeses, and meats such as duck salami and select smoked meats. The walk does us good and afterward, we complement it with a yoga stretch at KamaDeva Yoga, where we could choose among a number of yoga styles that vary in their emphasis of poses. Owned and operated by one of this country’s yoga pioneers, Jessica Bellofatto, the studio runs scheduled sessions at all yoga levels. We note that Jessica also offers the only Boga Yoga floating studio in the Hamptons, where classes are held on stand-up paddleboards and combine traditional yoga postures while floating in flat water. Being novices, we enjoy an open-level class and stretch it out. We have worked up an appetite, but we would like to continue our health-conscious morning with clean eating. In that spirit, Babette’s is a perfect choice for lunch. A fun and eclectic restaurant, organic, local and seasonal foods are served here, with a lively and social vibe adding to the fun. We sample the falafel plate with fresh hummus and taboule atop tomato, onion, cucumber, and organic greens, served with grilled garlic sesame pita crisps. It’s fresh and bountiful. We add a grass-fed organic beef burger (hormone and antibiotic free) on a multigrain bun with tomato, greens, pickles, and onion. We have trouble deciding on the many extras we can add to our burger, but settle on gorgonzola and avocado. Our burger comes with a side of steamed seasonal vegetables and a choice of brown rice or sweet potato fries. Iced cold watermelon mimosas are refreshing and sparkly. A gluten-free menu is available too. After lunch, we drive over to East Hampton’s historical
district and arrive at our next lodging spot, The 1770 House, an 18th-century inn located right on Main Street, but as private as can be. Obvious in this landmark’s architectural restoration is the skilled craftsmanship of its owner, Hamptons luxury homebuilder Ben Krupinski. Enter to find eight beautiful guest rooms, most appointed with fireplaces and all with private baths, allowing for both relaxed comfort and extreme pampering. For dinner, we crave Bostwick’s Chowder House and delight in the fun décor. This space features a casual atmosphere with a seaside theme. Light colors, exposed wood, and accents like surfboards and beach art on the walls contribute to the laidback ambiance. The outdoor area features several tables with market umbrellas for guests to take in the summer air while enjoying fresh seafood. The seafood is fresh and plentiful and we enjoy a feast of it, sharing steamers, corn on the cob, and an order of clams on the half shell. Starters include New England or Manhattan clam chowder and lobster bisque. Locally sourced fried oysters with remoulade sauce, baked stuffed clams, calamari, and steamed mussels round out the menu choices. Fried seafood favorites abound: clam bellies, clam strips, shrimp, fish and chips, oysters, and flounder. Fresh whole lobsters are always available, gleaming bright red and overhanging the serving platters, and served with hot drawn butter, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. Daily blackboard specials feature fresh fish entrées, such as potato crusted halibut, grilled tuna, and more. Desserts feature tall root beer floats
and fresh soft-serve ice cream. Domestic and imported brews, wine by the glass, and a limited selection of bottled wine are also offered. Taking in the last remnants of fresh air, we sit outdoors in the casual patio area. We enjoy some soft-serve ice cream and after we try to count the stars, we head back into town, anxious to experience our final lodging spot. The refurbished Baker House 1650, with its magical arched entryway, awaits us in its entire splendor. This boutique hotel is stocked to the brim with luxe and contemporary enhancements: flat screen TVs, Bose stereos, iPod docks, minibars, wireless internet access, L’Occitane toiletries, Frette towels and robes, two-person Jacuzzi tubs, and antique claw-footed tubs, with most bedrooms offering wood-burning fireplaces. A luxurious common living room with a large fireplace makes for great socializing. A fully appointed dining room and a well-stocked bar and library add dimension. The onsite Baker Spa has a Jacuzzi tub, steam shower, and sauna and offers everything from facials to massages. We sneak a dip in the infinity pool, a teaser to the beach swimming we will do later this season, then enjoy a power nap. The next day is spent lounging at the beach, enjoying a strong sun. For dinner we visit the Highway Restaurant & Bar. Referred to by regulars and locals as an “upscale diner,” the

tique furnishings all complete the ambiance with polish and authenticity. An intimate in-house dining room adds character to the mix, decorated with cream curtains and walls and high-back rattan chairs with colorful cushions. On clear and sunny afternoons, step outside into the inn’s natural sanctuary, replete with a garden patio and quiet sitting nooks, ideal for a lazy afternoon’s cat nap. In the garden, alfresco seasonal dining is offered, set around a fountain, with patio seating, and perfectly manicured landscaping. A quaint carriage house with an upstairs loft is another option in lodging, ideal for a romantic getaway. The 1770’s intimate tavern in the basement, serving gastro-pub fare, offers delicious bites on the premises. The executive chef, Michael Rozzi, has developed a fine dining menu of New American cuisine while the wine director, Michael Cohen, sees to perfect wine pairings.

vibe is friendly yet not in the least compromised by this. The menu is innovative: honest contemporary American food with a strong and interesting Thai influence. We enjoy Thai basil beef massaman curry with sweet potato, perfect on this crisp night. We are seated right in front of a crackling fireplace and the warmth radiates around us. Pork and shrimp summer rolls with sweet chili and hoisin sauces cut the heartiness of our main course. Kale salad with carrots, radishes, and a ginger soy dressing do the same. Grilled rack of lamb with pea and quinoa, tabouli, and mint tahina add dimension in flavor and texture. The Highway offers food to-go for home, beach, or catering. On Monday, it’s time to depart. Looking for lunch, we stop at The Clam Bar. The casual, summery atmosphere here is perfect for a quick stopover or for lingering over a nice meal with friends. Featuring tables with umbrellas and a bar area with stools looking into the open kitchen, the chef/manager, Brian Mooney, is happy to schmooze with you and discuss his beloved local oysters as well as catch-of-the-day fish. The clams on the half-shell, steamers, and oysters are iced and tasty. The specials board reflects what is coming off the boats that day. The lobster roll is signature and popular: overstuffed with fresh lobster meat. Fried clams are perfectly seasoned and not the least bit greasy. A slice of key lime pie finishes our meal nicely. Tonight we will dine at Winston’s. Veteran local chef Winston Lyons offers a Caribbean-centric menu specializing in seafood and steak. Upon our arrival, this spot is already bustling with return diners as evidenced by the delightful banter exchanged between guests and wait staff. If you’re lucky enough to get here while soft-shell crab is still in season, try a dish of it perfectly spiced and sautéed with some fried plantains on the side, or the jerk chicken, fresh and juicy with just the right amount of heat. Winston’s signature coco punch with Shellback spiced rum, Finlandia coconut, Chambord liquor, and orange and pineapple juices is smooth and cuts the heat nicely. For dessert, be sure to order the signature bread pudding, worthy of a visit all for itself. With sated appetites, sun-drenched tans, and a bunch of memories, we plan our return trip back to East Hampton, Montauk, Westhampton, Bridge, and Sag. As I said, some things never get old.

Fiesta Tequila Summer By Sharon Roth
H
eralded in by Cinco de Mayo, May is tequila month, unequivocally the most sumptuous, savory way to kick off a Hamptons summer. And healthy too! Ok, reasonably. According to a recent article in Forbes Magazine, tequila can aid digestion, lower cholesterol, and is a much tastier headache cure than Advil. And as a boon for the sugar conscious, tequila’s simple sugars break down in the body more easily than other alcohols, making it better for the body all around — inside and out. The catch, however, is in the quality. Unlike so many other things, with tequila you do get what you pay for. Mexican law requires that its tequila be produced only in certain areas of the country, where the microclimate assures the best quality of blue agave, the only plant from which Mexican tequila derives. Most tequila actually comes from the area around the city of Tequila in the Mexican State of Jalisco. American law permits a label to style itself tequila even while containing up to 49 percent other substances, most commonly cheap, sugar-based, highcalorie alcohols. Though a bottle may be labeled tequila, what is inside may be the equivalent of a sloppily crafted frat party mixed-drink guaranteed to leave a monster headache in its wake. The solution? Buy and serve your guests only premium tequilas
whose labels assure you it’s made from 100 percent Mexican blue agave. The newest premium tequila on the market — aptly named Perfectomundo has taken the classic art-form of artisanal tequila and elevated it by using 100 percent estategrown blue agave in a proprietary recipe, distilling it multiple times for superior quality, purity of flavor, and a smooth, rich earthiness evocative of the Mexican soil from where it hails. Celebrated as one of most interesting new products at the 2016 Wines & Spirits Wholesalers of America Conference in Las Vegas — where it also happened to win the Best Tasting Blanco and Añejo awards — and selected as an official tequila of ChefDance at the Sundance Film Festival, Perfectomundo is manufactured by Fabricas de Tequilas Finos, one of the oldest and most prominent Mexican tequila distilleries. Co-owned by music producer and Grammy nominee DJ Paul Oakenfold, the brand already has a celebrity following and has been featured at numerous film and music events around the globe. The Perfectomundo tequilla family retails for $39 (Platinum Blanco), $49 (Classico Reposado), $80 (Deluxe Añejo). Spicy and delicate, Platinum tequila Blanco offers intense, sweet notes of blue agave with a touch of white pepper and cascade of lavish vanillas. Classico Reposado is an 80 proof, 100 percent de agave artisanal tequila aged for eleven and a half months in new white oak barrels to develop its intense, full-body agave flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel. And the sparkling jewel in the Perfectomundo crown is Deluxe Añejo, a one-of-a-kind sipping tequila, aged a full three years in charred French and American oak and aged Bourbon barrels, then perfectly blended by a master distiller. “This careful process creates a delectably smooth result that rivals master cognac and single-malt blenders of France and Scotland,” notes Perfectomundo co-founder Sergey Knazev. Best way to serve your summer party guests? Try the Hamptons Perfectomundo, a simple poolside refresher of Blanco stirred with lemon zest and a sprig of rosemary. With our long-awaited balmy beach days finally here, revel in one of many spectacular Hamptons sunsets, put your toes in the sand, and raise your favorite tequila to summer 2016!

Sparkling lover? Sure you are! By Catharsis Ray
E
ven if you’re a diehard beer guy or a vodka-drinking socialite counting calories, can you resist bubbles — especially on the most special occasions? (And, if you’re in the Hamptons, those occasions are many.) Bubbling to the top of the top of an exclusive list of preferred labels is Rotari and its Metodo Classico, northern Italy’s version of Champagne. While Prosecco’s explosive popularity has put Italian sparkling wine on the map in the United States, a lot of wine lovers are unaware that Metodo Classico is quite different from Prosecco in terms of its process and quality. Metodo Classico sparkling wines such as Rotari are made with the same meticulous techniques as Champagne, specifically with second fermentation in the bottle, which produces the effervescence and complexity of flavor. The Italians have put their stake in the fertile ground when it comes to quality, for both their red and white varietals. In fact, wine production regulations in the Trentodoc appellation, home of Metodo Classico, can sometimes be even stricter than the exclusively French sparkling wines. Rotari is located in a valley of the Dolomites, a range within the Italian Alps. This area produces elegant, complex, and aromatic Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Meunier grapes thanks to a pristine environment and unique microclimates. “It’s become my go-to for most parties, and I always hide a bottle or two for myself,” says Santi Trampel, a New York– based communications professional and Italian wine expert. “Sometimes I find myself torn between an exceptional but overpriced Brunello and the crisp elegance of Metodo Clas-
sico.” Trampel agrees that the workmanship of Metodo Classico is just as meticulous as Champagne’s. As for Rotari, it’s made with more rigorous production methods than its own appellation requires and is aged in the bottle for at least two years before appearing on shelves. The eco-conscious will be happy to know Rotari practices sustainable winemaking with the utmost care and respect for the environment and vineyards. Beginning this spring, Rotari will release vintage-dated wines, meaning the wines are made from grapes harvested in the same year, a further commitment to quality from the winery. The best part — it’s an everyday luxury: Rotari’s new vintage-dated Brut and Rosé will be around $20. Look for them at the best East End parties this summer.

For Rhonda Klch, it’s time to give back By JoJo Greer
R
honda Klch is, by any account, an enormous success. Her firm, Equity First, has grown a reputation for helping businesses and consumers in financial distress for over a decade, offering services to help people resolve many everyday financial problems. Equity First specializes in establishing realistic expectations for everyday living that affect a person’s budget, retirement, savings allocation, credit, and more. Equity First also offers consulting and programs for entrepreneurs and small start-up businesses. The goal is to prepare a business for unexpected expenses and the potential downtime of owning and operating a small business. Rhonda says that many consumers are not aware of their needs, and some can’t get their heads around where to begin on their pathway back to financial health. Consumers rely on their emotions to make decisions, and this often compounds problems. That’s why, over the past year, Rhonda and her team have established Equity First Foundation, a nonprofit 501c3 devoted to helping people and communities get the education they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. The foundation, which provides education, tools, and resources, is quickly growing and often teams with other organizations for a larger reach and greater impact. JG: How did Equity First come about? Rhonda Klch: EFF was developed to offer financial literacy education, which is much needed here on Long Island. Everyone has been affected by the economy of the last few years; no one has been immune. Long Island is my home, and I love it here and want to protect it, help it grow, and keep families living here. My nonprofit allows me to provide the needed resources to the people who live and work here. Financial distress does not discriminate. My goal is to get to the root of the problem and create realistic pathways for my clients, whether in a one-on-one setting or in a workshop. JG: Why do you run workshops? RK: Workshops allow me to help a lot more people at one time. Many workshops have as many as 50 people in attendance. When someone comes in and sits with me one-on-one, I’m able to deal with only one family. At an event, I can help 50 families or more, giving them tools and resources to improve their situations.
JG: What’s the hottest topic you speak on? RK: Home retention is popular. Long Island has a high foreclosure rate and with media attention focused on scam operations, people are afraid to reach out for help. Many families I speak with have tried the loan modification process on their own, only to feel overwhelmed, scared, and anxious because they do not understand the procedures and protocols of the banking industry. In our workshops, we address the concerns and explain the procedures. Many families in our workshops had previously applied for help and were denied. They thought their only option was to sell, because that is what the bank had told them! We offer real information about this very emotional topic. JG: Why do you do this work? RK: It truly is gratifying. I put families back together. It’s exceptionally rewarding to know that we are helping in such a meaningful way. We dig deep, we develop relationships, and we want our clients to succeed. It is very personal and emotional, not just for the client but for our staff. We smile together, cry together, and share in the experience with our clients. We pool together to get the best results possible. We are like having your own cheer squad by your side: we offer support, consulting , and tools to succeed. My staff and I save lives, marriages, and families every day. Some people measure success in money, but we measure success in the number of families that get back on track. JG: Are you partnering with other organizations? RK: We are always looking for opportunities to work with other organizations where there is a great alignment to reach core constituencies who we can impact and help. If they call, we can determine how to make it work! JG: How can our readers help your foundation? RK: As a nonprofit, we rely on donations. We also offer special sponsorship programs. If anyone would like to sponsor a program for children, young adults, seniors, veterans, etcetera, they can mail a donation. We also offer corporate sponsorships where the sponsor can choose a program, attend the workshop, hand out materials, and get involved with the community. For more information, email me at rhonda@equityfirstusa.com or call 631.714.4822 x102 Tax deductible donations can be mailed to Equity First Foundation at PO Box 601; Mt. Sinai, NY 11766. Social Life

A self-made reputation for excellence
Carlyle on the Green
By Jacob Puck
T
here aren’t many people who can drop the name Donald Trump as casually as Steve Carl can. It makes sense the two would be friends. In addition to their kinship in running successful empires, they possess a no-nonsense approach to success fuelled by an uncompromising commitment to being the absolute best at what they do. For Carl, that means running five of the most successful catering companies in the region: Carlyle on the Green, Carlyle of Lawrence, Carlyle at the Palace, Carlyle at the Omni, and Carlyle off the Green. (Of course, two of his highest-profile ventures are his in-house restaurant Taste 99 at the Carlyle on the Green location, and a collaboration with Donald Trump.) A 25-year veteran of the restaurant and catering business, Carl has seen —and done — it all. “I’m self made,” he says unapologetically. “I’m the son of a plumber and a housewife. I’ve raised four great kids. I’ve built many, many companies, having been involved in 42 to be exact. When you add that all up, it makes me very proud.” (It’s worth noting that Carl was named “Father of the Year” by a local organization in 2012.) With a penchant for business from the beginning (he earned a BS in business), Carl got his start in packaging by building a company with annual revenues in excess of $45 million. For him, though, that was more than a lifetime ago. If you ask him
which of those 42 businesses he has enjoyed most, he redirects to the one that is currently most successful: Carlyle on the Green and the other jewels of his catering empire. “It’s probably the most successful catering company on Long Island,” he says, noting that he has over 550 employees overall. “It’s where everyone wants to get married, have golf outings, host their corporate event . . . we do everything. And we do it well.” As for the Trump connection, he was pleased when he was recently approached by his friend’s presidential campaign to host a campaign event/party on Long Island. According to The New York Times, more than 18,000 sought tickets for the event held at Grumman Studios. Reportedly, 12,000 got in, and Carl and his team were ready, as always, for the onslaught. “He [Trump] was thrilled with the event and he made sure to thank me a number of times,” said Carl, acknowledging that Trump is a discerning customer, so the bar was pretty high. “On the other hand, we are business partners, so it wasn’t like he had to go to the Yellow Pages.” Carl concedes that whether it’s Trump or anyone else seeking to have the perfect event, none of it would be possible without his people. “I think what it all comes down to is that I’m good to work for: I’m a good businessman, I’m a good friend, and I’m a great father,” he says. “I have a good reputation, and I like making people happy. That all makes for a really great life.” carlylecaterning.com

SPiNNiNG iNto FAtHeRHood By JaCoB puCk Jp: have you always wanted to have kids? lK: Absolutely. Wolfie was born all naturally at home; he’s an organic baby.
Lee Kalt in the Hamptons
Jp: what about being a DJ prepared you for fatherhood? lK: With every job, you have routines. You have to be disciplined. As a DJ, it’s all about scheduling and being “on” when it’s show time. Naturally the same goes for Wolfie. Jp: sounds great. so, down to business. what style of music does Wolfie respond to? lK: Of course he loves my music, which integrates a lot of genres, but he also loves James Taylor . . . you name it. We often put him to sleep to Pink Floyd. o hear DJ and producer Lee Kalt spin is to truly experience nightlife. An up-and-comer in the early 2000s, he’s among a small club of jocks who have the expertise to detect the vibe of any size room and make it feel like a universe of bliss. If you’re an old timer, you may remember him when he burst onto the New York City club scene as the founding resident of the legendary Sullivan Room. Since then, at residencies and parties alike, he routinely has been tapped to play for some of the world’s A-listers, like Elon Musk, who has enlisted Kalt to provide the music and vibe for Tesla Motors. Early on he also added the coveted “producer” tag to his brand, and he was eventually handpicked by Erick Morillo to be one of the driving forces behind Subliminal Records. Locally, you’ve experienced Kalt all over the Hamptons and most recently at the East End’s hottest night spot, Beautique. Today, he’s taken on yet another role: dad. So, we wanted to learn more about how one of the world’s hottest globetrotting DJs (and our resident favorite) reconciles a life on the go with a family in the making. Jacob puck: You and your wife, malinda, have travelled all over the world, headlining over 100-plus nights a year. the big news last year was that malinda gave birth to your son, Justin Wolf (Wolfie), last July 4th. A bit of a transition, no? lee Kalt: People warned us saying, “Now you’re gonna be up all night.” But the opposite is actually true: Wolfie has us going to bed much earlier. He has gracefully embraced our travel lifestyle with zest and zeal.
Jp: what’s trending in your sets right now? lK: It’s got to be sexy. I like music that makes me feel something. I play all genres of EDM, while mixing in all your favorites from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s through today’s Top 40. Jp: how do you read the audience? lK: I study my crowd, what they might like. I make sure there’s something special in there for everyone, whether it’s old or new. I give people music they can connect with. Jp: speaking of: what’s the one old school song you never tire of spinning? lK: As a DJ, I share my love, admiration and appreciation through my music. This summer you can expect to hear a deluge of David Bowie and a plethora of Prince. soundcloud.com/leekalt

oN tHe WiNGS oF A ButteRFLY By JaCoB puCk lizabeth Arthur is, by any definition, a gifted woman . . . and an inspiration While she may be best known for her exclusive line of Kimimi swimwear, the uninitiated may not know that Arthur is also a teacher and an electrician. “I do three things very well, but fashion is my dream coming true right now,” she says. “I do keep busy, but it’s a labor of love,” says Arthur. “My hope is to be a role model and inspiration to other women.” Arthur, whose unique line of swimwear looks just as stunning on supermodels as it does on plus sizes, says that her creations are meant to exemplify and accentuate feminine beauty and confidence with a wide variety of styles and patterns that are inspired by the natural beauty of the butterfly. “Kimimi derives from kimimila, the Sioux word for butterfly, and, in the spirit of a butterfly, I want women to have wings,” she says. “Kimimi was created to express a woman’s beauty, and to acknowledge that we are all different and beautiful in our own way.” Kimimi’s mission is to transform each individual who wears Arthur’s pieces from ordinary to extraordinary, through a passion for the most exquisite materials and attention to every detail. A New York–area entrepreneur, Arthur has always been inspired by butterflies. As a child playing on the beaches of Trinidad and Tobago, she admired the beauty and individuality of the patterns on their wings when they’d flutter by. As an adult, she’s identified with and been inspired by their process of metamorphosis. Consequently, this led to the name of her latest endeavor. “The beach has always been a part of my life and I have always been discouraged that some women feel like they need to wear a giant t-shirt to the beach rather than a bathing suit,” she says.
A true champion of the feminine mystique, Arthur says that she is never trying to achieve the image that appears on the front pages of magazines or in ads for cosmetic surgeons. “No matter what size you are, you should feel confident when you go to the beach. You should feel sexy and happy,” she says. “A butterfly is never the same, but they are all beautiful. No two women are exactly alike, but we are all beautiful in so many ways.” Arthur says that she derives much of her inspiration and passion from her brother who has been successful in the fashion space. “I always wanted to be like him,” she says. “He understands unique, he understands different, and he really made it. I wanted to be part of that because I always loved it.” With Kimimi, Arthur has truly made it. kimimillc.com

Margaret Butler Women’s Salon Series By Carlos Lacayo
salon series
(Alternative Minimum Tax?)
Cut your alternative minimum tax... Call Henry (AKA The Hammer)
At Margaret Isa Butler’s first salon, Olympic ice dancer Melissa Gregory spoke about her nonprofit, Eduskating, which teaches students Olympic values and skating. Next, Butler gathered women at Michael’s for a discussion about impact investing, as a toast to International Women’s Day. Guests included Tanya Rivero, host of The Wall Street Journal’s Lunch Break, and Tami Kesselman, founder and chief solutions officer for SolveForGood. Butler, a private equity and real estate attorney specializing in mergers and acquisitions, is building community through her salons and recognizing women who make important contributions to society and promote the exchange of ideas, engagement, and collaboration needed to generate creative solutions to social challenges. “In the city, we tend to stay in our own areas of expertise, so you end up with circles of friends who have a lot in common with you. I believe that the best way to be creative, and to make new things happen in the world, is to bring people together who have different ideas and different ways of doing things.”

Butler’s day job at Greenberg Traurig, LLP involves helping fund managers, institutional investors, and family offices buy and sell companies and invest in real estate developments, social infrastructure projects, and public-private partnerships. Since 2009, Butler has led the Harvard Club of New York’s M&A interest group, and in 2013 she was named in M&A Advisor’s “40 Under 40” list. She’s also on the advisory board of the private equity program at Columbia Business School, her alma mater.

The Second Most Famous Hillary By Bannon Race
F
ashion designer, real estate up-and-comer, front-of-the line men’s bespoke shirt designer, amazing who’s who on the scene — is there anything Hillary Flowers doesn’t do? The answer to that question, we assumed, was sleep! But, even with that she surprises. Read on.
BR: You are everywhere and involved in so many highprofile projects. What is your true passion? HF: I definitely have a passion for fashion. After earning a degree in fine art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, I moved to New York City and have paved my way through the industry, starting as a designer selling one-of-a-kind designs to boutiques in New York City. I then had the opportunity to own my own boutique on the Lower East Side for five years, Hillary Flowers Designer Collective, before transitioning to acquiring 20 Peacocks. BR: Let’s talk about your newest venture: real estate. You are listing with Citi Habitats. Any firm would be thrilled to have you. Why did you choose Citi? HF: Citi Habitats is owned by NRT, which owns Sotheby’s and Corcoran, so when the senior managing director, Brian Ullman, invited me to join their Upper East Side office, I couldn’t refuse the opportunity to be with such a renowned team! BR: You are also the doyenne of one of the most exclusive men’s bespoke dress shirt shops in New York City. How did you get into this space? HF: In 2012, I had the opportunity to design custom shirts for

men at 20 Peacocks and have since taken over the company. 20 Peacocks specializes in bespoke, custom, made-to-measure button-down shirts. We have been expanding to suits and ties. 20peacocks.com is by appointment and clients can email me at info@20peacocks.com or feel free to call/text at 718.674.5873 to schedule an appointment. BR: Why should men go bespoke rather than off the rack? HF: Bespoke, made-to-measure is ideal for men because they are guaranteed their desired fit, without compromise or exception. Fit is very personal for each man and some like their fit to be more sculpted to the body while others prefer clothing to be more loose. In addition, some men may have longer arms, a larger neck but smaller frame, broader shoulders, muscular biceps, etcetera. In all cases, we make fit exceptionally comfortable and flattering. Perfection is not an exaggeration or abstraction; we take the time to arrive at it.
