PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Nothing quite compares to a Hamptons summer. I would say the same goes for autumn. Come September, the Hamptons transforms into a different but equally vibrant version of itself. Events continue without pause, often focusing on a creative community that may not shine as brightly in beach-going months as it deserves. October brings the annual Hamptons International Film Festival, where a mix of established and emerging artists show us their talents. The festival is a highly enjoyable experience. Of course, there are many fall activities the Hamptons has to offer — apple picking, playing a round at Montauk Downs, visiting vineyards, or riding your bike through the less traveled roads. Out here, with the natural surroundings and time spent at the ocean, everything seems a little more special. In November and December, the Hamptons is still a great place to spend time with family for the holidays. Back in the city, Social Life will be publishing October and December issues. Manhattan does offer endless possibilities for an active social life, and we will continue to cover it. Even though I’m fond of New York, there is something about the Hamptons I love but can’t describe in mere words. I recommend trying to find out why spending time in the Hamptons may define your life.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I hope each of you has enjoyed the season with intensity and gratitude. Personally, the way I achieved this was by pushing myself to try new things by exploring life outside my familiar Hamptons routine. Yet there are things that never change: how much I enjoy spending time with those nearest and dearest to me. Every year I grow more grateful for my closest friends. Moving through life with gratitude has truly changed me by making me much more present. In fact, from Cicero to Ferris Bueller, many have acknowledged the importance of gratitude. Cicero said that thankfulness is supremely important by stating, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” And who doesn’t know the iconic line from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” Now think about it, Ferris Beuller isn’t saying to pause and complain about someone’s driving or fret over goals or judge others. He is saying to stop and feel grateful for every little thing because that is the only way you can really enjoy life. Stop and be thankful. Push the negativity out even for a moment and list all the good things or you may miss them. I’m most thankful for the love of my life, my husband. I know a thousand Instagram memes say this but life truly is at its most wonderful when shared with your best friend. Whether it’s your spouse, life partner, best friend, or a cherished family member who’s your partner in crime, your loved one deserves a note of sweet words, a reminder of a happy memory, surprise homemade cookies, or . . . The list of ways to express gratitude can go on and on. I don’t know about you, but another thing I enjoy and am grateful for is a stunning September sunset. I’m looking forward to the fall. From apple picking to watching the leaves turn bright colors, I cannot wait to enjoy our next season in the Hamptons. Wishing all my readers good health and happy adventures! All good things to come,

This Labor Day issue features American businessman and philanthropist James C. Metzger, Founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, the leading insurance brokerage and financial services firm on Long Island. The prominent entrepreneur is a former Long Island high school and college star athlete proficient in the sports of football, basketball and lacrosse. Metzger has always felt that the confidence and success he acquired through participating in these sporting activities helped build his brand. The celebrated athlete instinctively knew early in his career that he wanted to give back to both individuals and groups, especially to sports communities. The CEO’s philanthropic donations are widely distributed to various sports and educational programs and include local community and national charitable organizations: the American Heart Association, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island, St. Jude Children’s Reseach Hospital, the Hempstead
Police Athletic League, and countless other programs including his 1.5 million dollar donation to Hofstra University. Over the past six years, I have had the pleasure of working closely with James Metzger, and the experience has been truly inspiring. Metzger thoroughly enjoys mentoring as well as sharing his philosophy for success with promising entrepreneurs, student-athletes, and communities less fortunate. His passion and effort in helping others is incredibly moving. I am eager to witness what’s happening next for this distinguished businessman and philanthropist. As Labor Day is upon us, it’s hard to believe that the summer season is coming to an end. It feels just like yesterday we kicked off Memorial Day weekend. There are still many activities to enjoy on this Labor Day weekend such as The Hamptons Classic Horse Show located in Bridgehampton, and numerous possibilities to take you right into the fall season: pumpkin picking at Hanks Pumpkintown in Watermill, shopping in one of the many historic villages on the East End, or simply spending time with family and friends in the privacy of your own backyards. I am pleased to announce that we are continuing with our New York City Fall/Winter issues and look forward to connecting with you in the city that never sleeps!

ara Shala is an internationally renowned jewelry designer whose innovative approach combines classic sensibility with high-tech production. Her designs have been featured in mainstream publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and the Washington Post, and consistently appear on runways during Fashion Weeks in New York City and Milan. In only a short time, Sara Shala Fine Jewelry has become a thriving business. Today, Hollywood stars, recording artists, and popular internet influencers wear her distinctive earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Each Sara Shala design combines luxury and femininity. Although she has traveled extensively, Sara discovered she never has to leave New York City to be inspired by diverse cultures and lifestyles. And all of her pieces are crafted in NYC, home to some of the world’s best jewelry manufacturers. Through her personal experiences, she came to understand that each day presents a variety of occasions for the modern woman and, therefore, opportunities for a variety of looks. She aspires to make elegant, stunning, yet transitional pieces that have been inspired by her own life, from running errands to business lunches to galas. Besides her love for fashion, Sara is also passionate about charitable causes. She donates to and raises funds for causes such as UN Women, Doctors Without Borders, the IRC, St. Jude’s Hospital, the United Negro College Fund, and others. MEET THE DESIGNER LISE LIBBY By Blaire Bass
The Art Is in the Wearing The Undiscovered Jewel of Jewelry Social Life editors searched high and low for uniquely gorgeous jewelry this summer. We set out to find designs that are out-of-theordinary and can be worn on various occasions. We certainly found a designer who stole our hearts. Lise Libby’s stunning designs are feminine, flowy, and bejeweled, and we can’t get enough of them. After wearing her pieces every day this summer, I sat down with Lise Libby to learn more about her designs and inspirations. What inspired you to start designing jewelry? My children inspired me. As the mom of three girls, doing crafts was a staple in our house, something we enjoyed doing together. As my children grew up and went to college, the girls encouraged me to pursue a creative outlet and I began designing jewelry. I wore my creations and received compliments and even had strangers ask me where they could be purchased. Within a few months Lise Libby was born. We love how you construct each and every stunning piece yourself. Do you have a favorite item that you make year over year? I don’t have a favorite item that I make year over year. I love creating, and my greatest joy is creating new pieces each year.
Ashley $100 Coin and baroque pearls on sterling silver snake chain. We wore it long, doubled, and also as a lariat. We even wore it as a bracelet!
SocialLifeMagazine.com
Cherie $130 Tie Cherie in different ways, including as a bracelet. This has been our everyday accessory. It will keep you looking polished and poised even when going casual.
Tell us about the various pearls you use to strike that gorgeously elegant look. I work mainly with freshwater pearls. Pearls come in many shapes, sizes, and colors and are a timeless fashion statement. The simple grace of pearls can make a great accessory to any situation, whether you’re going to the office or have plans for the evening. Can you tell us about the versatility of your pieces? Many of the necklaces can be worn in more than one way: long, wrapped, a lariat, or your own creation. If the Lise Libby brand had a motto, what would it be? The art is in the wearing. How would describe your designs? Unique inspiring fashion statements, each one named after a special person who has inspired me. Lise Libby liselibby.com
Linda $150 These abstract grey baroque pearls, also known as angel wing pearls, are exquisite and our absolute favorite. No two angel wing pearls are alike!
Fiona Vanessa $25 $25 Stack these stunners on your wrist for a funky, delicate, and fashionable look. We just love them!

WILLEM FASHION’S NEXT AVATAR By George Wayne Chapter #1 was my riff off Max’s Kansas City (legendary underground club in ’70s NYC). Chapter #2 was inspired by Montauk and in particular the photographer Peter Beard. Chapter #3 was inspired by the late artist Dash Snow, with a focus on both a post 9/11 Downtown NYC vibe and one of Dash’s favorite films, Clint Eastwood’s Pale Rider meets the early California gold rush.
W
ho will be America’s next great menswear avatar? GW is placing every last bet on WILLEM, born from the imagination of the fashion talent Sean McDonagh. WILLEM New York is McDonagh’s increasingly buzzed about fashion line. His novel and completely literate and original approach to the classic all-American silhouette is the sort of thing you would expect from a lateral thinker with a history degree from Harvard. His breakthrough spring/summer 2019 collection was inspired by 1970s Montauk (where he has spent most every summer of his 25-year life). And the collection he interpreted through the works of the famed photographer Peter Beard has been a seminal and instant hit. It’s time to meet the coolest young menswear designer in America as he prepares to launch chapter #3 of his line this autumn. Yours is clearly a meta-modern, post-millennial approach to fashion design. Talk about the ethos of the fashion brand WILLEM. It’s about telling a story and having the silhouette and the narrative driven by those who sort of inspire a cool, cultural significance in their own original way. My line is super niche that’s for sure and that’s the way I want to keep it. Each collection is a capsule collection, or, as I prefer to call it, a chapter. SocialLifeMagazine.com
Hence, next season’s signature classics from the house of WILLEM, which will debut in October in your Manhattan pop up. The drape of that navy overcoat in wool-cashmere is an instant classic. The leather vest and the broadbrimmed hat is signature Dash Snow. Your take is so cool and so modern. Talk a bit about Chapter #2, your spring/summer 2019 collection inspired by Montauk through the lens of Peter Beard. That all began from spending summers in Montauk since I was two years old. There is so much more to Montauk than the town and I have always, ever since I was a kid, always been fascinated by the Andy Warhol estate. And no one really realizes that the oldest cattle ranch in the United States is also in Montauk. Montauk is so much more than the Sloppy Tuna. So the fascination started with the Warhol estate and then I realized that Peter Beard was Andy’s next door neighbor . . . and from that Chapter #2 evolved. For me there is some kind of magic in the Montauk air. The look book for that collection was also shot at the Warhol estate. And the photographer was Terrence Connors, a cool Montauk local. This collection is an inspired blend of Beard and his muses from Montauk to Kenya. Without question WILLEM is the coolest and smartest menswear of the 21st century. There is no question a future CFDA for Menswear Design is in your cards, Sean McDonagh. And the best way to find the brand is . . . ? To visit our online e-commerce site: willemnyc.com

SUMMER STEWART FASHION-FORWARD ECOLOGICALLY SOUND CLOTHING By Cecilia Dawn What was the driving force behind founding an ecologically sound clothing brand? Authenticity is at the center of everything in my life. After being in fashion for over 15 years, I have watched the industry adapt to new standards to support our ever-changing environment. Working in fashion I saw firsthand how damaging the industry can be to our planet. I’ve always reflected on my own footprint and have been mindful of how I can improve. I want to show that fashion can become a part of the solution by using recycled materials.
I
n 2018, Summer Stewart launched a sustainable athleisure brand focused on providing fashion-forward ecologically sound clothing, marrying her love of fashion with her love for planet Earth. Her goal is to make classic athleisure with designer details for the fashion-forward babe. You can see the latest Summer Stewart designs at the launch party on Saturday, August 31, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., 478 W Lake Drive, Montauk. It’s free and open to the public. Social Life sat down with Summer to learn more about the inspiration behind her phenomenal designs. How did you get into the world of fashion? Growing up I always had a very entrepreneurial spirit and a keen love of fashion. At fourteen, I was cast in an Abercrombie campaign, which launched me into the world of fashion. I began modeling and quickly moved to New York to pursue all things fashion. I met Richie Rich and convinced him to sponsor me for an internship with Heatherette. I began to develop my love for fashion and chose to leave modeling to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology later that year. SocialLifeMagazine.com
Do you have plans to expand into other types of fashion? I am definitely open to expanding into other areas of fashion as we grow. I think the most important aspect of our brand is to stay true to our customer. We want to fulfill a need in the marketplace for fashion-forward athleisure that you can wear during your workout or at brunch with your besties! My favorite part about our designs is that I can pair them with my favorite handbag, hoops, and heels to be prepared for yoga, followed by a night out on the town. Do you have a favorite piece? It’s so hard to choose, especially with this collection. I have a go-to piece to wear depending on my mood. If I’m in a rush to get to yoga, it’s the Venice set in black, or if I’m heading to an event with friends, I’ll throw on the Turn Up the Heat body suit with a blazer. Sometimes I just want to chill with my boyfriend, and I know I’ll be cozy in the Sk8te or Dye set. It’s truly a labor of love and I can’t choose! Favorite quote? Oprah’s “I love bread.” I love bread too, Oprah. I also love pizza, pasta, and french fries. I try to live a healthy lifestyle, balancing my love of carbs with my love of working out! ANGELO DAVID REVITALIZING YOUR BEAUTY CONFIDENCE WITH COUTURE HAIR By ElizaBeth Taylor Photography By Jaime Pavon The famous 18th-century English poet Alexander Pope wrote, “And beauty draws us with a single hair.” The modernday world appreciates luscious locks the same way. Gorgeous hair makes one feel alive and sexy. It is the thing most desired by individuals experiencing hair issues. Angelo David Salon strives to make each client look stunning and feel worthy of poetic sentiments. The salon’s creative director and owner, Angelo David Pisacreta, wants to bestow each client with his gift of beauty confidence. To sit in his chair is a new sort of salon experience — something magical and transformative. This hair illusionist uplifts the soul. His Midtown Manhattan salon is one of the best in the industry and a destination for boosting your self-assurance. His world-renowned techniques and wealth of knowledge make him one of the leading artists performing hair miracles. “Almost half of all women have thinning hair, which is really distressing to them,” says this gifted stylist. “Great hair is part of women’s self-esteem, and by working with women to help solve fine- and thinning-hair problems, I brought my artistry to the next level.” His vast experience has made him a master who specializes in hair health and growth for both his female and male clients. Clients around the world have experienced the wonder of his work, including even those who suffer from alopecia or hereditary hair loss. Addressing underlying issues is just the beginning of Angelo’s skill set as a master stylist. Reflecting on the passion that drives him, he explains, “I’m a veteran in the industry, with prestigious clientele and a salon on Madison Avenue. I’ve become an expert in haircare because I live and breathe it every day. I am always looking for new ideas and I love being a pioneer in what I do.” Angelo is also the incredible inventor of his popular line of couture hair. Angelo David Salon is the world’s only salon that offers completely customized couture wigs, hairpieces, extensions, additions, fillers, clip-on bangs, and ponies that are 100% human hair. This luxury hair can command as much as $3,000 to $10,000. “Faux hair has now become part of our culture; it’s no longer taboo to talk about it.” Hairpieces may be prevalent in salons, but according to Angelo, “You must know how to do it right and go all in.”
Angelo David
At Angelo David Salon you can choose from dozens of extensions and additions, as well as dozens of different application methods. Groundbreaking attachment techniques include strand-by-strand, hot fusion, cold fusion, micro-cylinder, bonding/adhesive, linking, and tube shrinking. This master stylist says, “Couture hair is not only to address thinning hair. It has become part of the culture in fashion, editorial, and television. Don’t be fooled by celebrities changing their look overnight. This is made possible with couture hair, and more and more people are embracing this lifestyle.” Every component of Angelo David Salon’s couture hair is designed on-site by professional wig tailors who match each client’s hair texture, type, and color. “The wig tailors customize hair and alter it just for you,” Angelo declares about his dedicated team. Across the board his inspirational fervor for beauty makes Angelo a shining example in the industry, with no signs of slowing down. Innovation and creativity are what drive the accomplishments of the salon. It is this outlook that helped him formulate his successful Hair Detox hair-revival supplement. The exclusive lifestyle supplement combats the problem of unhealthy hair by correcting nutritional deficiencies, environmental aggressors, and hormonal imbalances through natural nutrients that are specifically selected for their traditional and scientifically supported combinations. Key vitamins, herbs, amino acids, and antioxidants are carefully balanced in the unique stressrelief blend, which includes biotin, mixed phytosterols, ashwagandha root extract, L-theanine, holy basil leaf power, astragalus root powder, gotu kola powder, and saw palmetto berry extract. It is the first lifestyle dietary supplement with all-natural ingredients that are specifically selected to help improve the effects of stress and, at the same time, detox your system. Hair Detox also addresses the different supplemental needs of men and women. The men’s formula contains saw palmetto, a known DHT (dihydrotestosterone) blocker. DHT is known to play a role in male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). The women’s formula includes cranberry fruit extract to promote urinary tract health and L-cysteine, which contributes to protein-building in cells. With use of Hair Detox, positive change is in store. Angelo has constantly evolved his portfolio and business by enhancing offerings at the salon. Angelo David Salon is a modern, meticulously designed facility that offers a spa-like experience. It boasts 2,500 square feet with seven private VIP hair suites, a hair-extension styling bar, a beauty concierge department, a beauty lounge, and a couture hair boutique. The boutique offers both couture and ready-towear styles, so that most clients can have the hair they want the same day they walk in the door. The location houses a full-service salon with an open area facing Madison Avenue where you can have the perfect cut, color, and style. The salon also offers a range of bridal services, including up-dos, styling, and makeup for the bridal party. There is also a private consultation room that comfortably allows you to discuss your concerns and vision for your hair. Additionally, unique to the salon is the sale of Angelo’s Flex SocialLifeMagazine.com
Brush, which molds to the curvature of your head, detangling knotted hair and cleaning your scalp. The Flex Brush provides the perfect amount of pressure and stimulation, not hurting your scalp and not tearing at your hair like rigid brushes. “We have industry veterans visit the salon and they are blown away by what we’ve created here,” notes Angelo. Undeniably, this is a man who can help you wow a crowd. Angelo can restore confidence to women and men no matter how difficult their hair problems may be. There is simply no stopping the magic from sparkling with Angelo David Salon. angelodavid.com Facebook: @AngeloDavidSalon Instagram & Twitter: @AngeloDavidHair

I WISH I’D LOOKED INTO REGENERATIVE MEDICINE FIRST! By Stephen Roman, M.D. Founder, RegeneSpine, Regenerative Spine & Joint Institute
“When I met Dr. Roman, I’d been having pain on the outside part of my hip for years that worsened despite steroid injections. I told him that I was diagnosed with bursitis. He examined my hip with an ultrasound and told me that I didn’t have bursitis. Instead, it was a case of gluteal tendinitis and steroids wouldn’t help. He then performed a procedure using my own cells and my pain is now gone.” words of a patient
R
egenerative medicine is a new field that has brought us revolutionary treatments for orthopedic and spine problems that were previously treated with steroids and surgery. STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY can be one of your best chances to regain your health, mobility and freedom. Throughout your body there are many cells with innate healing capacity. These include mesenchymal stem cells which are located throughout the body especially in your bone marrow and fat. For over 15 years, I have provided care to thousands of patients, just like you, including professional athletes, with various spine and joint disorders, arthritis, and pain
issues. I have been pioneering new treatment methodologies to enable patients to use their own cells to help with their spine and joint challenges. We offer FDA-compliant regenerative therapy for issues such as: spine pain, joint pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, hip pain, and much more. When a patient has a painful joint, many doctors still recommend steroid injections. A question I am often asked is, “What are the advantages of getting a regenerative or cellular joint Stephen Roman, M.D. treatment, instead of an oldfashioned steroid injection?” I’d like to invite you to a special webinar that I’ve put together to answer this question. I prepared this webinar so you can understand the risks of steroid injections and to prompt you to do your own research on regenerative approaches. DR . SHARYN LEWIN A HUMANITARIAN-PHILANTHROPIST & THE LEWIN FUND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN FIGHTING WOMEN’S CANCERS By Fallon Harrington
T
he Lewin Fund to Fight Women’s Cancers is dedicated to combating the serious challenge facing one in three women and their families — cancer. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Sharyn Lewin, a renowned gynecologic oncologist and Castle Connolly Top Doctor in New York City, The Lewin Fund is a family fund that not only helps women with cancer, but is also committed to wellness and prevention initiatives to keep women cancer free. This fund began through a generous gift from a woman who lost her battle to uterine cancer. So grateful for Dr. Lewin’s passion to help, she wanted to support expanding Dr. Lewin’s vision and expertise to more people across the nation. The Lewin Fund’s mission focuses on addressing the massive unmet funding needs for research, education, prevention, and support for women with cancer. The fund is particularly focused on underserved communities. “Not All Cancers Are Pink” is a trademarked slogan of the Lewin Fund. Studies show women’s cancers, other than breast cancer, are poorly funded across the United States. Here are some examples of how The Lewin Fund is making a difference in our area: SUPPORT SERVICES: NEW YORK First, The Lewin Fund strives to help not just women but also their families, supporting them in a myriad of ways as they face cancer. For example, it funds a transportation program at Mount Sinai Hospital to help women travel for chemotherapy and doctor appointments. It also funds a Bronx-based program, The BOLD Brothers/ Sisters Program at Albert Einstein, to support children whose moms and grandmothers have cancer. It supports the Woman to Woman Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, a peer mentoring program. PREVENTION & EDUCATION INITIATIVES Second, the Lewin Fund focuses on prevention. It hosts free community events to help educate the community about cancer prevention and wellness. Some of the events include “Own Your Health Power Panels,” “Tell 10 Women Events,” “Latina Summits,” and the “National Education Symposia.” INNOVATIVE RESEARCH: MEMORIAL SLOAN-KETTERING CANCER CENTER The Lewin Fund supports several innovative research projects, with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, for example. It has also embarked on precision medicine studies, including ones on genetics and immunotherapy.
Dr. Sharyn Lewin, Steven M. Cohen
STEVEN M. COHEN, SPECIAL ADVISOR The Lewin Fund has many supporters from all walks of life. The fund’s voluntary board of directors carefully vets proposals for funding opportunities. Special advisors are also on hand to provide insight and support. Steven M. Cohen, a special advisor to The Lewin Fund, explains that partnering with and supporting The Lewin Fund is a deep passion for him. He is committed to helping with fundraising efforts, identifying strategic partnerships, and engaging in community outreach on behalf of the organization. With a background in technology and capital markets, Cohen plans to launch a hedge fund focused on blockchain and digital assets. This fund will have a strategic alliance with The Lewin Fund. THE FORCES BEHIND THE FUND Both the founder and the executive director of The Lewin Fund, Dr. Sharyn Lewin designed the organization’s strategic vision and oversees the operations. She serves as the chief ambassador, at the helm of advancing the mission to invest in grassroots initiatives and research that directly support women who are afflicted with cancer, and their families. She brings more than 20 years of medical research, and community outreach experience to her role and is a long-time advocate for women and women’s health initiatives. Dr. Lewin’s father, Thomas J. Lewin, Ph.D., is the fund’s treasurer. He grows the strategic vision for the fund and supports its operations. He is professor emeritus of international business history at the University of Kansas. rom Montauk to Brooklyn, Punch Pedal House is receiving rave reviews from those brave enough to give it a try. The fitness studio houses both HIIT indoor cycling and boxing bootcamp, allowing members to reap the benefits of these two dynamic, workouts in one place. Created by a former D1 athlete, Joey Foley, and a classically trained ballerina and fashion model, Nada Vasilijevic, the workouts are designed to change your body through carefully crafted classes. An interview with Joey and Nada follows. What would you say is the most difficult part of running your own fitness studio? Nada Vasilijevic: Balance. Our lives are limited outside of the studio due to our perfectionist personalities. We take on all the responsibilities: janitorial, front desk, instruction, you name it. We did this to experience and understand every aspect and then teach our employees how we need our business to run. It’s about building a strong foundation, one that allows us to stand apart and create a loyal following. What sets your cycling and boxing bootcamp classes apart from the rest? Joey Foley: We’re like Instagram. We respect the idea and pathway social networking sites like MySpace paved for us, but we’re the next generation. Our formulas have been methodically designed based on the training practices of athletes who have competed. There are similarities to outsiders, but unless you have taken our spin and boxing classes, you might as well think all cycling and boxing classes are alike. SocialLifeMagazine.com
A client said that we are the unapologetic approach to fitness. We want you to be bold, but composed. Take life and love it, but still make your story with authority. It is an experience and workout that comes second to none. How do you describe your style of teaching? NV: Our styles are similar but different. Joey has always used sports as an escape. so when he opens the door to his clients everything disappears: worry, distress. And he inspires his class to do the same. I, too, encourage my class to forget about their stress and just be in the moment with me. I want them to overcome their physical limits, enjoy the music and the choreography, and let the endorphins take over. We both strive to have our classes leave better than when they came in. What’s next for Punch Pedal House? JF: Because of the success of our pop-up in the Hamptons, we will be looking for a good partner/landlord that wants a stable, longterm client. Someone who is willing to take a chance on us and believes in our philosophy. There is a real demand for indoor cycling and boxing classes Out East, and it’s pretty much an open market. We are looking at studios in Manhattan. We are ready to expand and we have the demand. We have people coming from Manhattan to Brooklyn daily. If we can succeed in this little section of Brooklyn, Manhattan will be a lot easier. All ventures have their issues. This is a marathon not a sprint for us. Punch Pedal House punch-pedal.com

LAUREN JENAI CO-FOUNDER OF CROSSFIT By Bennett Marcus
Lauren Jenai became a fitness mogul as a co-founder of CrossFit “I was not in the fitness industry — or fit — when I got involved with CrossFit,” says Lauren. She met Greg Glassman, her ex-husband, at Gold’s Gym in California. Glassman had developed a training method which he called CrossFit, and Lauren became his client. “I was an unfit person trying to become fit, and had tremendous results with his program, and became very passionate about it,” she says. Needing help, Glassman asked Lauren to work with him, and she spent over twenty years developing CrossFit into the global industry that it is today. MANIFEST APP: SIMPLE FITNESS AT HOME The couple split in 2013, and Lauren sold her CrossFit shares for over $20 million. “That was traumatic for me,” says Lauren. No longer working to help people, Lauren became depressed, and realized that she needed to do something. She spent a long time determining why people don’t exercise, or find it intimidating. Her findings resulted in Manifest, an app that she will launch in the fall after five years of research and testing. The program ties movement and diet to key health parameters like cholesterol and glucose levels. The simple exercises can be done at home, with dumbbells or even with object like jugs filled with water. “The workouts relate to movements we do on a day-to-day basis, like lifting things overhead, sitting down and standing up, and you can do those things in your home with objects that might already be in your house. It’s not intimidating, and it looks at exercise from a different perspective.” bemanifest.com

TIPS FOR STRESS RELIEF By Kristy Rao
A
Kristy Rao Potography by Frank Rocco
s a holistic nutritionist working mostly with New Yorkers, I see how stress takes a toll on health. In fact, New Yorkers report an average stress level that surpasses the national average. Obesity and sleeplessness have risen. Chronic stress can lead to chronic disease. Elevated cortisol levels can wreak havoc. Cortisol is linked to high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, accelerated aging, and depression. Stress causes digestive upset and even reduces the diversity of gut bacteria. The solution isn’t to avoid stressful events, as they are inevitable. It’s how to handle them. Here are my suggestions for reducing stress. • Breathe. We wouldn’t be alive if we weren’t breathing, right? But when was the last time you took ten very deep breaths? Breath is one of the most powerful yet underused ways to lower stress. To harness its power, breathe through your belly. Close your mouth and inhale deeply and exhale through your nose. Deep breathing literally increases the supply of oxygen to your brain, promoting a sense of calmness that will enhance your ability to think clearly. • Get quality sleep. Sleep affects all aspects of our lives. Studies have shown that those who have good quality sleep also have a lower cortisol response to stressors. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep in roughly the same time period each night. • Meditate. I teach all of my clients how to meditate. It’s a powerful tool to guard against emotional eating and also simply to bring down cortisol levels. Meditation is heralded by some of the most successful people, such as the hedge fund manager Ray Dalio. He and I were taught TM by the same instructor. On Twitter, Ray said TM has “been the single most important reason for whatever success” he has had. So, if you don’t believe me, take it from a billionaire. • Spend time in nature. A 15-minute walk along the beach has been shown to improve both mood and memory. We also need Kristy Rao at the home at 124 Brennans Moor, Water Mill. to get enough natural light, especially in the winter. FROM SMITHTOWN GOOD . . . TO GLOBAL GREAT The Journey of
ROB PANNELL By Patrick Shannon
Recently I asked the lacrosse pro Rob Pannell if he was going to the Hamptons for the weekend. He gulped, then chuckled as he said, “What? I haven’t been to the Hamptons on a summer weekend since I turned pro seven years ago in 2012.” He had a workout that morning, practice that afternoon, and a game with the New York Lizards the next day (Saturday). This, another step along the way that has led to a hallmarked career as one of our country’s most outstanding lacrosse players. Rob was born December 11, 1989, in Smithtown, New York. Months before there must have been a distribution of athletic gene pixy-dust that found its way to Rob’s DNA. Rob’s father, Robert, played baseball and football at Brown University. His uncle, Jim Metzger, is the brother of Rob’s mother, Susan. Jim is a former Half Hollow Hills High School and Hofstra University All-American lacrosse player for whom the men’s and women’s lacrosse offices at Hofstra are named. This athletic gene pass-on is not unique to Rob. His brother, James, played lacrosse at the University of Virginia, was an All-American, and is a professional lacrosse player in the PLL. However, as any professional athlete will confirm, nature certainly plays an important role in what gets you to the show, but ultimately it’s the nurture side of the formula that develops the motivation, dedication, and determination to give you what it takes to become a pro. Rob’s early growth and development in sports was rather normal. A three-sport athlete, he honed his overall skills playing football and basketball in addition to lacrosse as a youngster.

JUST PLAYING GAMES Rob attended Smithtown High School. He played on the varsity lacrosse team for three years and led Long Island in scoring his senior year with a school record 130 points. Rob was named offensive MVP of the team that season and earned a place on Newsday’s All-Long Island second team. After the season, he was named to the 2007 high school All-American team. He also played football, basketball, and golf, earning Academic All-Division honors for football in his senior year. Even with all of these accomplishments, he was an under-recruited senior leaving Smithtown. Size matters, and it doesn’t, so for a 5' 9", 160-pound prospect, most recruiters need to be grabbed by the collar and told to watch, because not every good to great player is 6' 1" to 6' 3" and 210 to 230 pounds. He had scholarship offers for college, but nothing from the powerhouses of college lacrosse.
AND THEN IT WASN’T JUST A GAME Uncle Jim (Metzger) inserted himself and a teammate of his from Hofstra, Vinny Sombrotto. Vinny was an All-American at Hofstra, played on four USA World Championship teams, and is a National Lacrosse Hall of Famer. They contributed heavily to the nurture side of the equation, and suggested he look at a PG year at a prep school where he could be seen competing against some of the best players in the Northeast, and continue to get the benefit of an academic experience at one of the best prep schools in the country. He attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, where he played basketball and lacrosse during a post-graduate year. He set a Deerfield lacrosse record for points in a single season with 99, and was named most outstanding attackman in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference. Additionally, he earned the Stewart Lindsay, Jr. Award for the outstanding attackman in Division I high school lacrosse.

COLLEGE AT CORNELL Conversations about college after Deerfield were different, very different. And, the commitment Rob and Cornell made to each another in 2008 changed them both. His freshman year, Rob was the Ivy League rookie of the year, and set the Cornell rookie record for points in a season, finishing with a team-high 67 points. He earned third-team All-American honors after his first college season and was named first-team AllIvy League. Cornell made it to the finals of the 2009 NCAA championship. Rob led the team in postseason scoring with 16 points over four games, including a six-point effort against the University of Virginia in the semifinals. After a big freshman year, sophomores usually face opposing coaches who make a point of drawing them back to earth. That was not the case with Rob. For the 2010 season, he was named as a first-team All-American, a first-team AllIvy League selection, the Ivy League player of the year, and the USILA’s Jack Turnbull Award winner as the outstanding
attackman in Division I. His 80 points made him the thirdhighest scorer in the league. In just 25 games he tallied 100 points, the fastest Cornell player to do so since Tim Goldstein 23 years before. Cornell made it to the final four of the NCAA tourney that year. Looking in the mirror and looking forward, as a junior Rob repeated all the awards and recognitions from the previous year. His 89 points in 2011 led all players in the league, but Cornell made it to only the second round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Virginia. Rob was voted the national player of the year by the coaches of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and presented with the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the NCAA’s most outstanding player in men’s college lacrosse. He was nominated for a 2011 ESPY for best male college athlete. He was one of five finalists in the category and the only lacrosse player ever to be nominated. Before the start of his senior season at Cornell, the New Social Life

Rob scored 16 points in the first two games of his senior season, but he broke his left foot in the second game against Army. Rob tried, but could not rehabilitate his foot in time for the NCAA tournament. Cornell did not make the NCAA tournament in 2012. Rob applied to the Ivy League for a fifth year of eligibility and was allowed to return to the school as a super senior for the spring semester and was eligible to participate in the 2013 lacrosse season. He led Cornell in scoring for the fourth time in five years and finished second in the NCAA with 102 points. Cornell made it to the semifinals of the 2013 NCAA championship, losing to the eventual champions, Duke University. At Cornell, Rob set the record of 354 all-time career NCAA points. The record stood until 2015, when it was broken by the Albany attackman Lyle Thompson, with 400 career points. Association and received his second Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the NCAA’s most outstanding player in men’s college lacrosse. He was the Ivy League’s first ever three-time player of the year award winner. In May 2013, he received the Tewaaraton trophy. This trophy honors the Native American heritage of lacrosse. Tewaaraton is the Mohawk name for a game the Mohawks and other tribes played, the progenitor of present-day lacrosse. Since 2011, The Tewaaraton Award has been given annually to the most outstanding American college lacrosse men’s and women’s lacrosse players. It is the lacrosse equivalent of football’s Heisman Trophy.

THE PROS Rob was the No. 1 draft choice in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft. He was selected by the New York Lizards. During his rookie season (2013), Rob recorded 42 points (25 goals and 17 assists) in 10 games. He ranked second in overall points, second in goals, and fourth in assists in the league among rookies. He was selected to his first MLL AllStar game in 2013 and was named the 2013 Cascade Lacrosse rookie of the year. In 2014, his second year with the New York Lizards, Rob was selected to his second All-Star game appearance and named an MLL All-Pro. He led the Lizards in points with 33 goals and 23 assists. Rob lead the Lizards to a playoff appearance, losing to Denver in the semifinals. Rob’s third year in the league included his third consecutive All-Star selection and he was named MLL All-Pro for the second time. He led the league in scoring with 68 points, 38 goals, and 30 assists, only the third player in MLL history to
have at least 30 goals and 30 assists in a season. Rob led the Lizards offensive attack all the way to the MLL championship game. He scored four goals and one assist in that game with the Lizards defeating the Rochester Rattlers for the 2015 MLL championship. Concluding his fourth year in the league, he was named the Warrior Lacrosse offensive player of the year. He broke the single season points record with 74 points on the way to his second consecutive scoring title. Rob led the league in points with 42 goals and 32 assists, becoming the second player in MLL history to record at least 30 goals and 30 assists in two or more seasons. Rob is the first player to score 40+ goals and have 30+ assists in a single season. He recorded a career high 8 goals and 9 points versus the Charlotte Hounds. He quarterbacked the New York Lizards to the No. 1 offense in the country and the team’s third straight playoff appearance. In 2016, Rob was named to his fourth consecutive All-Star team and third consecutive MLL All-Pro team. Social Life

In 2017, Rob played in 11 games with the New York Lizards. He was named an MLL All-Star, finishing the season with 49 points, 23 goals and 26 assists. He missed three games due to a thumb injury that required surgery midway through the season. During year six, Rob played in 13 games with the New York Lizards, breaking his own single season scoring record with 78 points on 43 goals and 35 assists. His previous single season scoring record was 74 points. He was named Coca Cola MVP, Warrior Offensive MVP, and an MLL All-Star for the sixth time. Rob is finishing up his seventh season with the New York Lizards. This is the final year of a three-year deal that he signed with the team during April 2017.
TEAM USA Without fail, when athletes have the opportunity to wear our nation’s colors and represent the United States, they describe it as something so special that they often have a hard time talking about it. Most pros don’t get the chance. Rob did, and he was quite proud of it. Rob was a member of 2014 Team USA that won silver at the World Championships in Denver. He was named the world’s most outstanding attackman and he was named to the All-World team. Rob led the world championships in scoring with 17 goals and 15 assists for a total of 32 points. His total points are second all-time in the Team USA scoring books for points in a tournament. Rob also had seven goals in USA’s game against the Iroquois. The 2018 world championships were played in Israel in July. At the games, Rob helped Team USA bring home the gold medal, assisting Tom Schreiber for the game-winning goal in a 9–8 victory over Canada with less than one second remaining in the game. Rob tallied 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points during the games and was named to the All-World team for the second time.
THE FUTURE Lacrosse is going through an interesting time right now. Participation in the game has continued to spread outside its Northeast roots. Today there are more than 826,000 players registered with USA Lacrosse. As professional sports grow, competition creates opportunity. At the professional level, SocialLifeMagazine.com
lacrosse is experiencing many of the same things baseball, American football, basketball, and hockey did during their development. Lacrosse has two pro leagues now, the MLL (Major League Lacrosse), and the first year PLL (Premier Lacrosse League). When we asked Rob about the future of the game, he said, “…I’m really looking forward to seeing what develops. The game is going to be elevated. It is just going to get better. The best players want to play against the best, and people want to watch the best. We’ll see what happens shortly.” Yes, we will, and we’re looking forward to it too. Good luck. RUSSO’S ON THE BAY By Patrick Shannon
T
PREFACE
wo years before I started my insurance business on Long Island in 1989, Frank Russo opened Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, Queens. With interest and regard, I watched him develop his banquet hall, restaurant, and food service business into one of the most successful hospitality operations in New York City. Every move he made was thoughtful and deliberate. Most important, among his business decisions has been choosing whom to hire and promote. Featured here are eight individuals whose combined service for Frank totals more than 215 years! To them and hundreds more, Russo’s On
The Bay is much more than just a job, it’s a way of life. And to Frank, they are “keepers.” I’m thankful to Anthony Gurino, a vice president at my firm, Whitmore Insurance, and a family friend of Mr. Russo, for bringing this business to us. It has been my privilege to help Frank protect his success. James C. Metzger CEO & Founder Whitmore — The Agency Social Life

Superstorm Sandy Cripples Howard Beach, October 29, 2012
R
ecently, I spoke with Frank Russo, the restaurateur of Russo’s On The Bay, Vetro Restaurant & Lounge, Russo’s On The Bay Gourmet as well as the provider of NYC Department for the Aging meals. Looking for insights as to why and how Frank built one of the most successful and acclaimed hospitality establishments in New York City, we found proof that good guys don’t finish last! In what follows, you’ll find out more about Frank, his hospitality business, and eight of his employees, including some responses to direct interview questions. Frank, after Superstorm Sandy, you began feeding the neighborhood as soon as you could get your kitchens going. Why? I didn’t know if I was going to be in business after the storm. The people in this community were the ones who built this business. They were out of power and gas for weeks. They needed help. I had food and staff that could help, so we just did the right thing. Howard Beach, like many other communities on the Queens shoreline, was devastated. For some, homes were completely gone. For almost everyone else, life was turned upside down. While Frank and his team began to rebuild their business, they also continued to support families in Howard Beach and the Rockaways, for weeks and then months. At times, they served as many as 600 people a day. It was well beyond what a banker’s ledger would say was best for the business, but Frank didn’t care about the money; he cared only about his people. Everyone we spoke to at Russo’s described Sandy in his or her own way as a defining moment for the company. Before we introduce them, here’s a little background on Frank Russo, and Russo’s On The Bay. As a young boy in Queens, Frank worked for his father and uncle at Villa Russo. There, he learned exemplary service and exquisite cuisine combined with professional attention to detail was always the best way to achieve customer satisfaction. SocialLifeMagazine.com
When Frank opened Russo’s On The Bay in 1987, his vision for the Russo brand was much more than an award-winning restaurant. He was committed to providing a venue and experience that families and friends would never forget. Among the Russo brand’s attributes is the significant role it plays in the most special moments of families’ lives. Russo’s is a multigenerational company, serving a multicultural community. Russo’s hosts events spanning some of their customers’ lifetimes, from baptisms to communions to sweet-sixteens to weddings. Most important, while Russo’s may serve more than 5,000 people in a week, every meal is planned and prepared to be top-restaurant quality. Finally, the most essential virtue in the Russo organziation is loyalty — from owner to employees, employees to owner, and from the Russo organization to their customers and community. Frank asked me to talk to a handful of his most trusted people. The theme that unfolded was how professional and personal success at Russo’s have been achieved by hard work, trust, and loyalty.

PJ Connolly COO & Junior Partner 30+ years at Russo’s
Michael Russo Facilities Director & Junior Partner 30+ years at Russo’s
PJ started at Russo’s as a food runner when he was in high school. He watched Frank, only thirty years old at the time, steering the ship on Cross Bay Boulevard. “I did whatever they asked me to do, and better yet, just tried do whatever I could do.” PJ had options. He went to college in North Carolina, studied accounting, and played on the golf team. He went to culinary school, and continued his education, becoming an award-winning sommelier in the process. With a business background, knowing his way around the kitchen, and being a wine expert, he’s the perfect Russo’s COO.
Mike, no relation to Frank, began at Villa Russo as a 15-year-old busboy. “Namesake or not, everyone earns their keep at Russo’s,” says Mike. Being good with his hands and head, Mike stepped up by demonstrating finer fixer talents, like troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading facilities. When old enough, he became a bartender too! Clearly, demonstrating his worth, Mike made the move to Russo’s On The Bay with Frank. Smart, resourceful, and excelling at what he did over the years, Mike was awarded responsibility for all facilities, including legal, insurance, and valet management. Talking about how Frank continually invests in new and renovated elements of the facilities, Mike beamed describing the recent work completed on two special event rooms, the Encore and the Paragon, as well as work on the lush garden and spectacular fountain.
Why did you keep coming back to Russo’s on your college breaks and summer vacations, and after college? I just loved the business. I couldn’t get enough of it. Yes, he was hooked and dove deep. PJ, what is it like working for Frank? For one thing, I’m proud. Russo’s is a great place to work. I can’t tell you how motivating it is to help people celebrate such special occasions and create unforgettable memories. Frank inspires me to work hard. He leads by example — he works hard every day, every night. He is a great boss.” PJ lives on Long Island with his wife, and four children.
Mike, you’ve worked for Frank for a long time, what’s that like? Hmm . . . where do I start, where do I stop? First off, he treats me like a son. And [with a chuckle] that can come with tough love too. He cares for people, and is very approachable. With Frank, it is always family first. As a result, you don’t want to let him down. His smile, too, is infectious. Mike and his wife, Joanna, have twin boys with whom he loves to mountain bike. Social Life

Cathy Burns Accounting 31+ years at Russo’s
Carol Silva Corporate Division Event Coordinator 25+ years at Russo’s
Cathy started with Frank as a part-time receptionist, then moved into the business office during the time of calculators and spreadsheets written in pencil. She moved up and has stayed on, in payroll and accounting. On June 8, Cathy celebrated 31 years at Russo’s On The Bay. “Working at Russo’s is like having two families,” Cathy said. “And, then when you watch two generations of customers celebrate christenings, showers, sweet sixteen parties, and weddings, it is just amazing. Working for Frank is amazing too. He seems to have a Midas touch. He has a tough shell, but he is a loving, caring man. I lost my home in Sandy. He helped me when we needed it.” Cathy now enjoys her grandchildren. “I bring home our Russo’s rainbow cookies, and the kids jump for joy. They think I work in a magical castle,” she laughs.
Carol started at Russo’s as a server and will be retiring soon, leaving her post as the corporate division events coordinator. Asked to describe her career at Russo’s, she simply responded, “Blessed.” Then she added, “Mr. Russo gave me what I needed, in terms of scheduling flexibility, so I could do my job, care for my family and spend quality time with them. And, when I got sick, again, the support was there.” Carol, her husband, and their four children live on Long Island. Christina, Carol’s daughter, was married at Russo’s On The Bay. “It was really a very special day, just beautiful. I thought the staff would take extra care of us, but it was just beyond anything I ever imagined. We were so grateful.” One of the things most important to Carol was the quality time with her family the scheduling at Russo’s gave her. Now she enjoys that kind of time again with her daughter’s two children.

F E AT U R E S Spiros Kannavos Russo’s Group Executive Chef 5+ years at Russo’s This is the new guy on the block. Compared to the rest of the team, he is a newbie. However, he, too, has spent his entire life in the hospitality business, starting at 13 in his family’s restaurant. The Kannavos family ran their business for 30 years. After it was sold, Spiros met Frank through family friends. Today, Spiros runs the back-of-the-house operations for Russo’s On The Bay and Vetro Restaurant. His strengths are building teams and product innovation. The creative side of Spiros got Frank’s attention. Spiros is very hands-on. He designed new menu items, developed delectable sauces, and created exquisite desserts. But Frank had something more planned for him. For the last three years, in addition to his back-of-thehouse responsibilities, Spiros has been working closely with Frank on the Russo’s Fresh Gourmet line — 3-cheese blend risotto bites, sauces, and much more. Later in the fall, items from Russo’s Gourmet line will be available in the majority of Costco stores in the Northeast (Midwest to come). The way you came to Russo’s was different from the others I’ve talked to. What was that like? At first, honestly, I thought it was going to be a little uncomfortable. Working at Russo’s On The Bay is not easy. Frank demands a lot. But, he really cares about his people. He treated me like family. And, I do feel like I am part of this family. Spiros lives on the North Shore of Long island with his family.
Billy Gibleski Director, Russo’s NYC Department for the Aging Program 26 years at Russo’s Billy lives in Howard Beach and has been working with Frank more than 25 years. He found out about a job at Russo’s while he was attending a wedding there. “They are looking for cooks upstairs,” a friend mentioned. That was 1992. He eventually became the kitchen manager at Vetro before Frank redirected him to head up a new piece of foodservice business for the company. Bill’s group at Russo’s On The Bay works with the NYC Department for the Aging. Every day they deliver 1,100 to 1,200 meals to twelve senior centers around the city. Billy gets great satisfaction knowing the product they produce and serve the seniors is top quality. “Every day the food is cooked fresh, nothing is frozen. It’s great to watch these folks enjoy top-restaurant quality meals. No other caterer else does this like we do,” Billy says proudly. You’ve lived in Howard Beach and worked at Russo’s On The Bay for a long time. Any thoughts? Yes, I’m lucky to work here, and to know Frank. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but it is like being part of a family. Frank is tough, but he cares about us and our families. He’s generous and caring. It is a great place to work.” The Howard Beach thing is interesting. I think Russo’s and Howard Beach kind of define one another, and the company is known and respected here. I was in the Miami airport not too long ago; a gentleman saw me wearing a ROTB [Russo’s On The Bay] jacket, and out of the blue said, ‘Hey, I know Russo’s. It’s great!’ Felt good. Social Life

Theodoro “Do” Lambasi Chef de Cuisine 40+ years at Russo’s
Joe moved to Queens from Italy when he was 15 years old. “I didn’t speak English. Didn’t really know anyone either,” Joe told me. “Five days later, I’m working at Russo’s On The Bay, and here I am, 30 years later.” Joe started as a busboy and said he would do anything, whatever needed to be done. Now, Joe is Russo’s director of events and manager of dining services. But he says, “I’m the maitre d.’ It is my job to build relationships and make people happy and satisfied. No customers, no Russo’s, right?”
How many great meals, functions, and events has this man designed and managed over more than 40 years? He has been with Frank since the beginning. We’re sorry we weren’t able to catch up the “Do.” However, not surprising, given the demands of the chef de cuisine for this entire enterprise. He did send us a picture though.
Surprisingly, during our interviews, not once did the actual word “loyalty,” come up. Just like this story proves nice guys don’t finish last, it also proves something else: actions speak louder than words. You don’t ever have to say you’re loyal when you are. Note: Earlier we mentioned Anthony Gurino, the family friend of the Russos. Anthony has been one of the lucky generational customers of Russo’s On The Bay, and describes providing the insurance coverage for his friend the pinnacle of his career at Whitmore. JESSE WARREN JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS JESSE WARREN, MAYOR OF SOUTHAMPTON By Jean Shafiroff Why did you decide to run for mayor? I decided to run for Southampton mayor because I believe that Southampton needed a change and an updated and new vision for decades to come. Interestingly, I have never had interest in politics, but I knew that now was the time to get involved in order to help our community. Having an inclusive and open government that engages our community and that also brings in the many industry leaders who reside in Southampton is extremely important. We have an amazing community, and it is important to engage everyone and work together. Additionally, as a business owner, I also care deeply about our downtown, which is replete with record vacancy numbers and needs change and new energy. And equally if not more important, I care about our environment and water quality and want to make sure we protect our land and water ecosystems for the future.
Can you tell us more about your campaign? The campaign started off as a small team of volunteers who believed we could accomplish a task that almost no one had achieved before, which is winning a mayoral election against an incumbent sitting mayor. When we began our petition process in order to collect signatures to appear on the ballot, it was largely considered to be improbable. Our team worked extremely hard to make sure that we met almost every voter in the village, we performed well in the debates, and ran an aggressive social media push and direct mailing campaign combined with yard signs and phone banking. We had volunteers of all backgrounds and all ages, and we were able to build incredible

Inauguration was on July 1, 2019, and it was one of the highlights of my life. I could not be more honored to serve Southampton and to bring the much-needed change that our community has asked for and deserves. Jesse, what are three major issues facing Southampton that you’d like to address as mayor? How do you plan to work on these issues? The platform consists of a number of key items. 1. Vibrancy in our downtown: Southampton Village unfortunately has a number of vacant storefronts on Jobs Lane, and we wanted to help bring businesses to Southampton Village, and create an environment that fosters entrepreneurship and investment in Southampton. I would also like to see more restaurants and more good SocialLifeMagazine.com
restaurants in our village, which will require water-treatment options and potentially a sewer system. Currently the health department will not allow additional restaurants in Southampton, so it’s important to work to improve this. 2. Clean water and a clean Lake Agawam: Southampton Village is home to Lake Agawam, one of the most polluted and toxic bodies of water in New York State. Our lake is polluted due to blue-green algae blooms that produce cyanobacteria, which is dangerous to the central nervous system. It is generally believed that the lake could never be cleaned or remediated, but I refuse to subscribe to this mindset and believe that we can accomplish this goal. While this will take many years to fix, this is a critical issue and something I am committed to. We will clean our lake by reducing nitrogen loading, encouraging innovative/alternative (I/A) septic systems as well as introducing sewer options to our village. We will also reduce runoff, create buffer zones, and employ new technologies such as natural treatment centers.

The gala honored the philanthropist Katharine Rayner, and the artist Carrie Mae Weems. Wilson said, “Carrie is radical and elegant, an unparalleled image-maker who stands resolutely for social justice. In her pictures, she questions the contradictions between past and present, between theater and documentation, and between history and memory.” Other artists whose work was featured included Gillian Walsh, LEIMAY, and the Daxophone Consort with Daniel Fishkin, Cleek Schrey, and Ron Shalom. Domingo Zapata
If you see a man dangling from scaffolding 15 stories above the sidewalk at One Times Square, where the New Year’s Eve ball drops, don’t panic. The artist Domingo Zapata is painting Life Is a Dream, which is also his mantra. Flowers, flamingos, and polo ponies, and other references to his past art fill a 15-story canvas that wraps around the iconic building. “For me it is an honor to be part of the story by creating Life Is a Dream, the largest mural in New York. I want to convey this message to people from all over the world who visit Times Square and who can enjoy and get to know my art.” dzapata.com Domingo Zapata @ One Times Square
earlier this month. Taylor dubbed the Rolls “The Green Goddess” and had it painted the same shade as her wedding dress when she said I do to Eddie Fisher in 1959. Although she had their initials intertwined on the car’s doors, the marriage fizzled after Taylor went to Rome to play the role of the world’s greatest beauty in Cleopatra and fell in love with her co-star Richard Burton. Liz dumped Eddie, but kept the Rolls, and married Burton in 1964. Next up at Guernsey’s is the sale of the Torah Ark and an important group of 12 letters written by the painter Marc Chagall. The lot also includes a self-portrait of the artist. The sale takes place at the Fifth Avenue synagogue on September 19. guernseys.com

Waldmann in Southampton
The jeweler Jay Waldmann has been interested in beautiful and precious things even from a young age. Twenty years ago, Waldmann opened a jewelry store in Southampton as a satellite to his flagship store in Dusseldorf, Germany. The shop, located at 25 Main Street, sells vintage jewelry, including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and pieces from the 18th to 20th centuries that bear stamps from such luxury brands as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Bulgari, and Tiffany. The shop also sells vintage watches, including rare Rolex’s with handpainted, colored dials from the ’60s and ’70s. Hurry in this weekend because the Southampton store is open only until September 2, but the shop in Dusseldorf is open all year. waldmanninc.com

On August 3, the Hamptons celebrated our heroes when Operation Warrior Shield (OWS) hosted a fundraiser and dance party at the Hedge Club, in Southampton, the newest arrival on the Hamptons party scene. Operation Warrior Shield’s primary mission is to provide comprehensive programs for service members, veterans, and first responders, with a focus on healing their hidden wounds through no-cost, holistic wellness services and connecting veterans to resources that address unemployment and homelessness. OWS is joined in this effort by both the David Lynch Foundation, which trains veterans in transcendental meditation (TM) for PTSD, and Brig Gen Loree Sutton, MD, the director of veterans services for the City of New York. According to the VA’s national suicide data report, 22 veterans, many young, commit suicide daily. Operation Warrior Shield and other organizations sound a clarion call for the need to assist military and their families, who fight a daily battle for improved quality of life and a path to physical and mental health and well-being. operationwarriorshield.com

JOHN BRADY OF SAUNDERS & ASSOCIATES BEST IN HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE By Cecelia Dawn 40 BAY VIEW AVENUE, AMAGANSETT | $1.095M
“There’s Amagansett . . . and there’s everywhere else.”
J
ohn Brady grew up in Montauk, graduated in 1996 from East Hampton High School, and attended SUNY Maritime College Merchant Marines to study mechanical engineering. Prior to his real estate career, John and his wife, Paty Brady, owned a marketing company in Mexico. A consistently top producer since entering real estate in 2006, John has been mentioned on the Fox Business Channel with Neil Cavuto and the BBC, and in Crain’s Business, the Financial Times, the New York Post, the London Daily Telegraph, Dan’s Papers, the Independent, the East Hampton Star, Social Life magazine, and on the front page of the Southampton Press, and has been featured in Hamptons Real Estate Showcase magazine. John studies the real estate market like a stock broker studies stocks. He says, “As an expert, it is my responsibility to know the numbers.” John is a firm believer that you can’t truly know your market unless you work all aspects of it. This includes new construction, luxury homes, land, developments, first-time homebuyer programs and financing, foreclosure (REO), and short sales (default servicing). John is knowledgeable about all of them. Since 2006 he has been responsible for 50 to 70 new transactions every year (compared to the national average of 4 to 6 transactions per agent per year). The Brady Team consists of the team leader and listing agent, John Brady; three specialists: Patricia Brady, Lourdes Alban, and Brooke Bramoff; and a full-time administrative assistant. He and his team are based in the East Hampton and Westhampton Beach Saunders offices.
It’s hard to believe that you can have this remote getaway on Napeague Bay, where only 11 owners on this street get to have this beach all to themselves. This property is just nine lots from the beach. It’s a builder’s own home that was expanded in 1993 with the living room, impressive stone fireplace, second story master bedroom with wood-burning fireplace, full bath with Jacuzzi, and access to the attic with at least 6 feet of headroom for storage. The original part of the house consists of three additional bedrooms, two baths, a den with wood-burning fireplace, and the open kitchen with sliders to the back deck. Whether this is a year-round home for the fantastic school in Amagansett or a summer getaway, it is a unique location. There is also room for a pool. There are wetlands to the rear of the property, so the options for a pool will be between the main house and existing garage or substituting the detached garage for an in-ground pool. The owner put it best, “It’s the quietness that I loved for so long at this location.” Not until you arrive, do you realize that there’s something so special about the Napeague. Enjoy the serenity and just let it be. NOEL ROBERTS BRINGING EXCLUSIVITY AND PRIVACY TO NEW HEIGHTS IN HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE By Cecilia Bloom
N
est Seekers International’s Noel Roberts wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when he moved to the Hamptons in 2016. While living in Manhattan, he was instrumental in arranging financing for Hamptons-based real estate developers, but truth be told, he had never stepped foot on the East End of Long Island. What was originally a sixmonth working holiday turned into a permanent stay. Noel quickly realized why the Hamptons captures people’s hearts — from the luxurious homes and beaches to the dining and art scene. With a decade of real estate and business experience, Noel works with individuals, investors, and developers interested in the Hamptons most coveted properties and specializes in new developments and value-added projects. He has a successful track record of guiding local real estate developers through the process of identifying suitable properties, negotiating deals, arranging financing, and helping to ensure a smooth and successful closing. A high-touch salesperson known for his extensive market knowledge and his unmatched devotion to clients, Noel’s success is based almost exclusively on referrals. He earns the respect of his clients by working tirelessly on their behalf and by offering candid advice. Noel also uses the latest media and advertising technologies and is the founder of Hamptons Spectator, a lifestyle and real estate publication based in East Hampton. Before moving to the Hamptons, Noel lived in Manhattan, where he provided consulting and capital-raising services to both residential and commercial developers. Recently, Noel launched Hamptons Private Client (hamptonsprivate.com), a unique service for both sellers of high-end real estate who prefer privacy and distinguished buyers. This new venture represents an inventory of off-market properties and coming-soon listings. Off-market listings are properties that sellers have decided to sell, but prefer not to list on the open market. In some instances, prospective purchasers may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Hamptons Private Client offers more than real estate opportunities. The goal is to bring together prominent individuals and families SocialLifeMagazine.com

Couri also appears on CNN, PBS, FOX and VH1 commenting on Hollywood. He lives in NYC and Southampton and is the CEO of his own PR firm.
On August 3, Amanda Hearst, the great granddaughter of the media mogul William Randolph Hearst, married the movie director Joachim Rønning, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated Kon-Taki; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Johnny Depp; and the upcoming Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, starring Angelina Jolie. The three-day fairy tale wedding began at Hearst Castle
in San Simeon and ended with a dinner at the Château Marmont in Los Angeles, where the couple met three years ago. Thus, the couple dubbed their nuptials “A Tale of Two Castles.” Amanda wore a white, pearl-encrusted, short dress by Viktor & Rolf to the rehearsal dinner in the castle’s dairy barn. The dinner had a Norwegian theme in honor of the groom’s native land. The event maestro David Monn

brought in live deer with huge antlers for the guests to pose with before entering the barn furnished with long tables that accommodated 150 guests. The ceiling was draped in blue silk, and the Norwegian flag was placed at one end of the space. The elaborate buffet was set up in front of the fireplace, which was bedecked with greenery and flowers, and the well-worn wooden tables were festooned with small vases filled with colorful field flowers. THE DEER & THE DAIRY BARN The bride’s chic mother, Anne Hearst, dressed in a navy blue column by Alexander McQueen, and her husband, Jay McInerney, greeted guests. Among them were Anne’s handsome and highly eligible son, Randy Harris; her sisters, Victoria and Patricia Hearst; Sharon Bush and her daughters, Ashley and Lauren, and Lauren’s husband, David Lauren; Jerry Bruckheimer; Paula and Tony Peck (Gregory Peck’s son); Hilary and Bobby Marx (the son of Zeppo Marx and the step-son of Frank Sinatra); Stellene Volandes, the editor in chief of Town and Country; George Farias; Robert Zimmerman; Luigi Tadini; Hassan Pierre (Amanda’s business partner at the sustainable fashion house Maison De Mode); Liliana and William Cavendish, and their daughter, Georgiana; Anne Barrish; Cornelia Bergmann; Judith Israel; a group of Anne’s friends from San Francisco; and a large contingent of Norwegians, including Joachim’s parents and brother. Joachim’s father charmingly played the guitar and sang some of his remarks. There was also an amusFront of Hearst Castle ing toastmaster who introduced twenty friends who spoke throughout the fun evening. THE BALL The black-tie ball started with a reception on the castle’s terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean, after the intimate wedding in one of the castle’s smaller cottages. The bells in the twin towers rang to announce the arrival of the bride and groom at the castle’s front door. Amanda was stunning in a white, sustainable dress with silhouetted flowers, by Oscar de Renta’s Fernando Garcia. The dinner was held on a second terrace, with the castle’s magnificent façade as a backdrop. Each of five tables was covered in a white and gold brocade tablecloth and set with white and gold china. The tables were decorated with a centered silver candelabra and bowls brimming with pastel roses and fruit, including cascading grapes. My favorite course was the titanic slice of caviar pie that kicked off the sumptuous dinner. A highlight of the evening was when the groom sat at the grand piano to play and sing the song he had com-
posed to commemorate the occasion. He did this just after giving a moving speech, thanking the bride’s family for welcoming him into the clan. The seated dinner was followed by dancing to a live orchestra, in a Moroccan-themed open-air pavilion adjacent to the legendary Neptune pool. After the first dance, (to the Disney classic “When You Wish Upon a Star”) and the cake cutting, Amanda changed into an elegant white sheath dress with a floating panel, by Galvan; her chignon was secured by a wreath of diamond flowers. After the dessert buffet, Amanda slipped into her going-away dress, a short pale pink confection printed with flowers, by Giambattista Valli. After midnight, the radiant couple descended the castle’s grand staircase as the evening’s final gesture. The guests tossed pink rose petals as the couple drove away in a cream-colored vintage convertible to the property’s private airfield, where they zipped off to Hollywood for their first night together as Mr. and Mrs. Rønning. But wait, there’s more. The wedding guests went to an after party in the Senator’s House at the nearby Hearst Ranch built by William Randolph Hearst’s father, Social Life

Senator George Hearst, in 1878. We sat around bonfires, sipped more Champagne, and nibbled on sinfully delicious Mexican fare into the wee hours. THE CHÂTEAU The final night of the wedding festivities was hosted by Joachim at the Château Marmont in Los Angeles. Drinks were served in the penthouse that Howard Hughes once called home, and the walls were covered in photos of the couple, many taken by the groom. This reception was followed by a dinner in the Chateau’s fabled gardens. Paris Hilton, a childhood friend of Amanda, manned the turntable for the post-dinner dance. Guests included Lydia Hearst and her husband, Chris Hardwick; Anne’s glamourous niece Gillian Hearst Shaw; Fran Drescher; Mai Musk; Justine and Robert Bloomingdale; Kathy and Rick Hilton; and 175 others of that ilk and stripe. In lieu of gifts, the couple asked for donations to Amanda’s nonprofit animal foundation, finn2finnalliance.org. Don’t’ be shy. You can donate too! THE WEDDING PLANNER During the toasts, the happy couple thanked their wedding planner, the extraordinarily tasteful and savvy Alison Mazzola, for making their fairy tale a reality. mazzpr.com Interior of Hearst Castle

CHÂTEAU MARMONT By R. Couri Hay
A
mong the luxurious Los Angeles hotels catering to the jet set, the Château Marmont stands apart. Now in its 90th year — an eternity in youth-obsessed Hollywood — the aristocratic dowager of Sunset Boulevard remains as popular today as ever. This year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z held their Oscars after-party there — in the Château’s garage! — welcoming A-list guests like Rihanna, Adele, Jennifer Lopez, Serena Williams, Adam Driver, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and 2019’s best actress winner, Olivia Colman. LA LA LAND, A STAR IS BORN & OLIVER STONE’S THE DOORS Countless movie scenes have been shot in the hotel, among them some in La La Land, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born, Oliver Stone’s The Doors, Almost Famous, and Myra Breckenridge. Sofia Coppola’s 2010 film, Somewhere, filmed entirely at the hotel, was an ode to the place, with the protagonist, played by Stephen Dorff, living at the Château. Coppola has been visiting the hotel all her life, and her father, the director Francis Ford Coppola, often checked in for prolonged stays, holing up in a suite or bungalow to write his scripts. THE GREAT GARBO, BETTE DAVIS, HOWARD HUGHES & AMANDA HEARST + JOACHIM RØNNING The Château Marmont is steeped in Hollywood legend. Judy Garland sang by the lobby piano. Greta Garbo lived there under the pseudonym Harriet Brown. Jean Harlow honeymooned at the hotel. Howard Hughes hid from the world here in the penthouse, where years later Amanda Hearst and Joachim Rønning had a second wedding celebration. In the 1950s, the Château Marmont was the only L.A. hotel to welcome Sidney Poitier as a guest. There are the wacky anecdotes: Jim Morrison fell from a balcony; James Dean jumped through a window to audition for Rebel Without a Cause; and a member of Led Zeppelin drove his motorcycle through the lobby. There’s also darker history here: Bette Davis fell asleep with a lit cigarette, nearly causing a fire, and John Belushi overdosed in a hotel property bungalow. ANDRÉ BALAZS & OLD-WORLD CHARM The Château Marmont opened in 1929 with a design based on a French castle in the Loire Valley, and the present owner,
André Balazs, purchased the hotel in 1990, but left the Old World charm intact during updates. Originally built as an apartment house, the 63 rooms, suites, and bungalows function as homes; proportions are gracious, and many suites have kitchens and sitting rooms, and some have formal dining rooms and private terraces. The place is imbued with a subtle chic; there’s a bit of the feeling of old Hollywood glamour. The intimate indoor dining room, famous garden terrace, and lobby bar are favorites with the Hollywood crowd. “Please refrain from taking photographs” is printed on the menus. OH, CANADA! FOUR SEASONS TORONTO By Anthony Michael
T
he verdict is in: There is absolutely nothing to dislike about Toronto, arguably the most urbane (and friendly) city in all of Canada. Don’t even get me started on adjectives — diverse, eclectic, fashionable, laid-back, artsy — I could go on and on. Perched on Lake Ontario’s northwestern shore, this vibrant metropolis should be manna for New Yorkers. With a smattering of soaring skyscrapers offset by lush green spaces, chic boutiques juxtaposed with an endless array of vintage shops and upscale eateries, well, dwarfed, by the number of sumptuous international cheap eats, Toronto is, upon first glance, a little Big Apple. Soon enough, you’ll realize that you are indeed away. This is Canada, after all, and despite being in the country’s largest city, (and considered the world’s most global city) the vibe is decidedly chill. Enjoy it. Among the city’s most elegant and luxurious digs is Four Seasons Toronto, located in the Yorkville neighborhood. A short walk to chic shops in Yorkville and nearby Bloor Street, the city’s most elegant restaurants and galleries, and a collection of world class museums, this well-placed five star is also just minutes from the financial and entertainment districts. Speaking of Yorkville, book a spacious Yorkville Premier Room, marked by a sleek, modern design, expansive city views, floor-toceiling windows, and a host of amenities, including an ultra high-def smart TV, in-room iPad to access Four Seasons services, and a Bose stereo system and charging stations. Four Seasons signature beds dressed in lush linens ensure extreme comfort. The bathroom feels like a mini-spa, bedecked in granite and featuring one of the largest soaking tubs we’ve ever experienced. If the en suite tub isn’t quite enough, make your way to the spa, arguably one of the largest and most fully-serviced in the city. While there is no shortage of treatments, go local and take in a coffee &
maple sugar scrub, which is inspired by that oh-so-patently Canadian flavor. Designed to deeply exfoliate and infuse skin with ultimate moisture, the process is finished with an ultra-hydrating shea butter application to leave skin smooth and replenished. Flavor is the name of the game in Toronto, and while some of the planet’s most interesting eats are within a short walk, consider an onsite indulgence with Café Boulud. Hailed as one of the city’s best restaurants, Café Boulud, is the chef Daniel Boulud’s reimagined French Brasserie . . . with many Canadian twists. You simply can’t go wrong with the plats du jour. Another local favorite is confit de canard, a thoughtful duck leg confit and foie gras with farro fennel, pomegranate, and carrot purée. Bring a glass of wine (or craft brew) back to your room and enjoy having gotten away from it all, Canada-style. Four Seasons Toronto fourseasons.com/toronto Social Life

THE FANTASTIC FOUR FOUR PREMIER DESTINATIONS TO VISIT THIS SUMMER By Norah Bradford
W
orn out by socializing this summer? Pack those bags and head to one of these fantastic four destinations after Labor Day and before the obligatory changing of the wardrobe . . .
The Delightful Dorchester, London dorchestercollection.com The hotel’s name comes from the 1792 private residence of the Earl of Dorchester. This Dorchester’s prime location opposite leafy Hyde Park was home to the American embassy before being rebuilt as a hotel in 1931. Now a Grade II Listed building (England’s equivalent to landmark status), its interior has been maintained to five-star standards. The bar mixes magical cocktails under the leadership of Giuliano Morandin and dining will be re-imagined in The Grill under the stewardship of the new head chef, Tom Booton, this autumn.
The Marvellous Le Meurice, Paris dorchestercollection.com Charles Augustin-Meurice wanted to attract British travelers seeking somewhere to stay in Paris, and so in 1835 Le Meurice was born. Today, Le Meurice has a global clientele, although the same basic premise underpins the establishment: to be your home while visiting Paris. It is located across from the Tuilleries and a short walk to the Louvre and has one of the world’s most talented pastry chefs, Cedric Grolet, and the two-Michelin star Restaurant Le Meurice Alain Ducasse. Leaving the property is challenging. Stay in the new rooftop suite with a patio offering 360-degree views of the Paris skyline and leaving will likely be impossible. SocialLifeMagazine.com
The Captivating Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic casadecampo.com.do Casa de Campo Resort & Villas is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and attracts affluent travelers with a mixture of spacious hotel rooms, suites, and luxury villas. Gourmet cuisine and fine wines and spirits are abundant throughout the destination’s restaurants and bars, a 370-slip marina, equestrian club, La Terraza Tennis Center, and 245-acre shooting club. For more than 40 years, this discreet enclave has been a favored escape for the world’s financial moguls, politicos, and Hollywood elite, including Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Michael Jordan, and President Bill Clinton.
The Superlative Shangri-La Hotel, Paris shangri-la.com/paris The former home of Napoléon Bonaparte’s grandnephew, Prince Roland Bonaparte, remains on the site of Shangri-La Hotel Paris, in the heart of the city and around the corner from the exclusive fashion designers on avenue Montaigne and avenue George V. While royalty no longer lives here full time, the attentive staff and discreet check-in ensure you receive the royal treatment right from the start. Many rooms have an unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower. Ask for the Krug Terrace, a speakeasy-style bar inside room 410. Its patio has a limited number of must-have outdoor tables with direct views to savor. Dine at La Bauhinia and enjoy a selection of light dishes inspired by French and Southeast Asian cuisine.

don’t know about you, but rather than feeling bittersweet as September approaches, a different emotion takes over: wanderlust. Wait. Is that an emotion or a primal urge? COPENHAGEN, DENMARK: THE UNVEILING OF KONGENS NYTORV SQUARE AND GAME SEASON
TRONDHEIM, NORWAY; ON TOP OF THE WORLD Trondheim, Norway, located on the imposing Trondheim Fjord, is just sixty miles south of the Arctic Circle — yes, that’s getting away from it all. That said, it is the third largest city in Norway, and instantly recognizable by its streets lined with colorful homes and filled with historic monuments. September through October is a perfect time to visit, with milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful colors (the nights also begin to get dark again, allowing for starry skies and possible glimpses of the northern lights). Two can’t-miss autumn citywide events are Trondheim Pride (September 6–15), central Norway’s largest LGBT+ event, and the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival (September 23–29). Nearby, the town of Røros is known for leading Norway’s local food movement and making the entire region a foodie destination. Our lodging recommendation is the new Hotel Britannia which Henrik Dahl Jahnsen opened last April after a four-year,

Lavaux and Lake Geneva
LAVAUX: WINE HARVEST AND PRIVATE GARDENS There is no more appropriate (or romantic) time than autumn to visit Switzerland’s Lavaux wine region. Overlooking majestic Lake Geneva and a bucolic landscape dotted with wineries and towns that date to medieval times, harvest here — and everything that comes with it — is best enjoyed from the home base of iconic Beau-Rivage Palace. Offering a spectacular vantage point from Europe’s highest mountain range, the hotel is situated at the foot of the Alps on ten acres of private gardens, with greenhouses and wooded parkland, in nearby Lausanne. Guests can arrange a private wine tour with the hotel’s vintage car, or schedule visits to artisanal chocolatiers and watchmakers in the mountains. Dine at the two-Michelin-starred Anne-Sophie Pic, which is currently under the tutelage of its eponymous chef, the only female French chef to hold three Michelin stars in more than 50 years. The restaurant offers a robust list of over 3,000 wines and 75,000 bottles. brp.ch

THE CHARLES HOTEL MUNICH By Anthony Giampetruzzi The Charles Hotel, Monforte Suite
Mathew Ian Bruffell
M
unich, the capital of Bavaria, Germany, is known for many things, not least of all is its proximity to some of the most spectacular destinations in Bavaria and neighboring Austria. Salzburg, although ancient, has been made famous as the setting for The Sound of Music. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a little more than two hours north of Munich, is a charming walled town that is arguably one the most authentic nods to medieval Europe. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, just over the Austrian border, had a tainted connection to the Third Reich as the locale for the 1936 Olympics and Nazi military hospital center during World War II, but has emerged as one of Germany’s premier destinations for hiking, skiing and biking. And, of course, Dachau, the first, and the model for all subsequent, concentration camps under the Nazi regime. This sobering destination, which will result in the need for some serious downtime, is perhaps the most important history lesson you’ll ever learn. Read: Don’t think twice about it. Munich itself is a study in contrasts. Largely destroyed during World War II, its history is a reflection of the larger saga of Bavaria. Grand, imposing, dark, and mysterious, every turn of the Old Town reveals another chapter of this iconic hub of politics, commerce, fashion, and fancy. You’ll want a good guide and a great pair of walking shoes to take it all in. Book Mathew Ian Bruffell
(matbruffell@protonmail.com) with plenty of notice. An expert on Munich, Bavaria, the Third Reich, and the entire Alpine region, Mat’s enthusiasm and passion astounds. Ask Mat about one new attraction you simply can’t miss: the new Munich Documentation Center. This dumbfounding display focuses on the history and consequences of the Nazi regime and the role of Munich as Hauptstadt der Bewegung, “capital of the movement.” Plan on four hours or more, and then head straight to a beer hall. You’ll want a drink. Already exhausted by your options? Start with the basics and book your stay at The Charles Hotel, one of the jewels in the Rocco Forte crown. Located in a unusually quiet district of the city, and nestled between the Old Botanical Garden, the Karlsplatz and the Königsplatz, the Charles Hotel is the ideal starting point for both business and private travelers. At once both modern and harkening to the heady days of this center of the modern world, The Charles Hotel is decked out in quiet natural colors and noble woods and natural stones of traditional Bavarian origin, but offset by offbeat sculpture, paintings, and photography by talented locals. In keeping with the theme of contrasts, the hotel exudes a contemporary vibe while maintaining its mantle of grand: The rooms are, well, roomy, with most overlooking the Botanical Gardens; some of the most stately structures of the city; and, on a clear day, the imposing Alps. Bathrooms complement the beautiful rooms, and one of our favorite touches was the bath amenities, Irene Forte Skincare, created Social Life

Perhaps the property’s pièce de résistance is Sophia’s Restaurant and Bar. The Michelin starred chef Michael Hüsken heads up a brilliant team who stress the importance of regional and seasonal products with some guest appearances from more exotic flavors and ingredients. This is Germany, so think the best meats; the freshest fish; and local vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs. From roasted Arctic char with soubise sauce and sweet and sour onions to duck breast with carrot ginger puree, wild broccoli, and tamarind jus . . . as is typical in Germany, you will likely pass out from food before drink. Whether it’s your jumping-off point, your all-in history lesson, or a combo of the two, Munich is among the best of the best in Europe. Let me inspire you! BY ANDREA CORREALE If the end of summer means a return to reality. For me it is indeed a reprieve from stuffing myself and my guests with endless trays of sinful nosh, and a devil-may-care attitude toward that second glass of Rosé. I like to view September as the beginning of a new year. Naturally, you’re wondering about my favorite seasonal dishes and, voila, they are simple: Indian Summer/Say Hello to Fall Salads. My desired staple is the beet which enjoys a certain cachet in the pantheon of good-for-you foods. Beets are delicious and versatile, and almost always fit well into a healthy and balanced diet. Surprisingly low in calories, they pack a onetwo punch: they are a great source of nutrients, including fiber, folate and vitamin C. Meanwhile, important nitrates play a key role in lower blood pressure and improve athletic performance. And, they are simply gorgeous.

fter months of sand, surf, and lazy twilights, fall is almost here . . . and, as much as we love summer, we are simply crazy about fall. Jewel-toned crispy leaves, perfect temperatures to get stuff done while we can still play outside, cute knit sweaters in fun colors named after vegetables . . . and lots of brunch cocktailing of course! Keep it all nice and healthy, advises Tanya Becker, the co-founder of Physique 57, the innovative barre class approach that has gone from workout sensation to empire since its 2006 launch. With so many options today and our growing knowledge of body chemistry, it is easier than ever before to drink low-cal and anti-bloat. “Here’s a cocktail with benefits I recommend,” says Becker. “It is not just delicious, but great for anyone with belly issues — rich in probiotics!”
Tequila is another way to go for healthy imbibing, notes Sergey Knazev, the co-founder of Perfectomundo Tequila, an award-winning label known for its smooth, rich expression, vanilla nutty flavor, and stellar craftsmanship. Tequila, he explains, is not only a probiotic digestive aid that helps with bloating, but the agave helps to lower our blood sugar, promoting weight loss.
Strawberry Kombucha Physique 4 ounces vodka 12 ounces ginger kombucha 2 tablespoon lemon juice 1 cup strawberries orange bitters to taste “It is best to have strawberry flavored vodka,” she adds. You can also soak one cup of strawberries in vodka for three to four days before. Healthy yes, but yum.
Perfectoginger Paloma 2 ounces Perfectomundo blanco tequila 1 ounce aperol 2 ounces grapefruit juice 1 tablespoon agave nectar 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 ounces ginger Directions are complicated: Mix together all. And drink.
And don't forget about quantity: We don't need Tanya Becker to tell us that while a couple of these divine and somewhat beneficial concoctions won’t harm our fitness efforts overmuch, 14 might be a different story. Let’s raise our fall healthtails and toast goodbye to summer 2019. And hello to a fabulous — and fit — fall and holidays ahead! SocialLifeMagazine.com

F
or most people, it takes a kick in the tush to make a change in their lives. For me, it took a broken elbow. A few months ago, I was working out on a Pilates reformer. The number one rule of using these machines: focus. But to be honest, my mind was in a million different places. I was thinking about a present I needed to buy for a five-year-old’s birthday party my daughter was invited to. I had to get my 12-year-old son to an audition as soon as he got out of school (Could we make it downtown in an Uber in less than 10 minutes?). I was planning my mother’s 70th birthday brunch (mental note: email the baker the cake should say, “Happy Birthday, #Nanadoll!”) and my 15-year-old had left his baseball uniform at home — I had to run it over to practice so he wouldn’t be benched. As I stretched and pulled and twisted and sweated, I could feel the tension in every joint. Ugh! I forgot to send out that email blast about the upcoming DivaMoms book club event Sunday! I had promised three days ago to edit the latest draft of a TV pilot I’m writing. Then the phone rang . . . and I answered it. It was my son’s high school calling about a problem that really wasn’t a problem, and by the time I hung up, I was so frazzled and distracted, I literally fell off the Pilates machine. It all happened in a split second: I didn’t want my face to hit the floor (plastic surgery is so expensive!), so I cushioned the fall with my left arm. I felt a pop, then searing pain. I literally saw stars and thought I would hurl or faint or possibly both at the same time. The instructor and the other women in the class swarmed around me, so I was too embarrassed to do either. Instead, I hailed a cab (with my right arm!) and headed to the nearest hospital. All of the plans I had been trying to figure out went out the window. I was now stuck in the emergency room for three hours, waiting to get X-rayed. When I got home, my arm was in a cast, and I was emotionally upset with myself. My family tried to be sympathetic, but I truly blamed myself for allowing this to happen. Why was I trying to juggle so many balls in the air at once? It was inevitable that one or five of them SocialLifeMagazine.com
would hit the ground. No one has that many hands (unless you are an octopus) — I just didn’t expect to fall with them. My friends like to tease me that I’m Wonder Woman (the long dark hair does bear a striking resemblance). But here’s the thing: Some days, I don’t have my cape on. I can’t do it all, all by myself. As much as I’d like to think of myself as a superhero in heels, I need some time off for good behavior. We give our kids a time out. Couldn’t someone give me one once in a while? Shayna Greenberg, Lyss Stern A friend called to check up on me while I was healing. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Breathing,” I replied. She thought that was the best answer she’d ever heard. And I meant it — that was all I was doing and it was enough. There’s this little reminder that automatically comes up on the Apple watch my kids gave me last Mother’s Day. Once a day, it buzzes on my wrist to remind me to breathe mindfully. Every time I see it, I hit mute. Who has time to take three minutes out of a day to inhale and exhale in a slow, steady rhythm? But I need to make time; we all do. It’s not selfish to make yourself a priority, to allow your babysitter or your husband or your kids to pitch in so you can indulge in a little self-care session. I found that a cast on my arm was a good reason to start. I hit snooze on my alarm. I took a long, hot shower. I poured myself a glass of rosé. I napped on the couch midday. I turned off my phone ringer and refused to check social media for 24 whole hours (Guess what? Facebook and Instagram were still there in the morning!). Amazingly, I found myself feeling less frustrated, resentful, and angry. I felt more zen, chill, and at peace. The next day, things got done, plans got finalized, deadlines got met. I felt more creative, more empowered, more ready to take on the world. Everything came together, and, I swear, it was because my mind was recharged and running on a full battery for the first time in forever. There was no more mom guilt (breaking your arm guarantees you a getout-of-jail pass for practically every task and obligation). My husband felt bad for me and actually volunteered. My cast came off and I was actually a little sad to see it go. My doctor assures me my arm will be good as new, although it might occasionally ache when it rains. I won’t mind. I’ll think of it as my own internal reminder to just breathe. With the hot, sultry days of summer upon us, take the opportunity to breathe on the beach, on a long walk, and be mindful of your inner voice. Enjoy the last of summer before the kids head back to school, and make lots of memories off-line. u Follow Lyss on Instagram @diva_moms and divamoms.com

CHRISTOPHER RIM COMMAND EDUCATION By Bennett Marcus
STACY KESSLER ACCESSORIES Command Education is one of the country’s most successful education and college consulting firms, with a 94% success rate of getting clients into at least one of their top three schools. “I believe that education should be accessible to everyone,” says Christopher Rim, who founded Command Education in 2015 while still studying at Yale. Many of his clients succeeded, getting into schools like Stanford and Johns Hopkins. “Through that experience I realized my method is good at motivating and inspiring students through this challenging process.” THE WINNING FORMULA Command Education’s unique approach hinges on elite admissions expertise and the science of emotional intelligence. Command Education’s counselors are recent graduates of Ivy League or other top-tier schools, so they all have experience succeeding in the competitive college admissions process. These counselors are close in age to their student clients and are able to advise them on a near-peer level. This helps serve as a bridge between parent and child and leads their student clients to take a counselor’s advice more seriously. Average teenagers are likely to take the advice of an older sibling, so they’re more likely to listen to Command Education’s mentors than to their high school’s college counselors. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE The final piece of the winning formula is EQ, or emotional intelligence. Command Education is founded on the belief that students succeed when they are doing what they are truly excited about. Their aim is not just to help the student get into the best college, but to help them to identify the schools that are the right fit, where they will thrive. commandeducation.com

STEVE MADDEN BREAKS IT DOWN WITH LAUREN KUCERAK
L
auren Kucerak, the founder of Kucerak + Co, sits down with her client Steve Madden, the founder, creative and design chief of Steve Madden Ltd. With a portfolio of leading fashion, beauty, and lifestyle clients, Kucerak has built her company into one of the sought-after agencies in New York. Now, the woman known for arranging the interviews is getting the Q&A treatLauren Kucerak ment herself, courtesy of her biggest client, Steve Madden. The self-made entrepreneur and designer famously turned a small investment and a trunk full of shoes into a billion-dollar fashion dynasty that spans the globe, and he hired Kucerak two years ago to look after his personal publicity. Lauren, you’re responsible for arranging interviews for me, right? Yes, along with other projects. And I’ve been good, right? Always. So, I’m turning the tables and am going to interview you. This should be interesting! Ok, here we go. How do you handle a client like me? You’re fantastic. The trick is letting Steve be Steve. You’re a natural, but it’s in the preparation. Making sure you know everything you need to before. Who’s interviewing you, what the topic or angle is, what they’ve written before, what they’re likely to ask, and anything you have in common with the interviewer — family, background, your interests. I’m a good client, huh? Yes, for many reasons. The media like you because you give them good material. And you’re honest. What’s great is that you and I speak shorthand. I know how you’re going to answer a question before I ask it. SocialLifeMagazine.com
What’s your favorite project at Steve Madden? There are a lot, but I really like Self Made. Mentoring young entrepreneurs with collaborations, roundtables, and networks is really at the heart of Steve Madden, given your path. I’m glad you brought that up; it’s very important to me. You know, I began Steve Madden with just $1,100 and look at us now. I can’t take all the credit as you have to surround yourself with the right people. Because of that, I thought it Steve Madden would be great if we could identify entrepreneurs in all fields and provide them the opportunity to tap into each other’s talents, ideas, and networks through our program. It’s one of many reasons I like working with you. You have a knack for spotting talent and nurturing and mentoring that talent. So, what about you? What’s your path? I can honestly say I paid my dues. I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years, starting in the agency side at Rogers & Cowan, when I did publicity for talk shows like Ricki Lake. This was that time when everyone had a talk show. It was insane, but the best classroom you could imagine. Thankfully, over time I moved into lifestyle, entertainment, and fashion, working with clients like Tommy Hilfiger, the TV show Gossip Girl, and celebrities like Molly Sims and Bruce Willis. And, of course, you. My favorite. I bet you tell that to everyone. Because you’re all my favorites! I have the best clients, who are also friends. And now look at you, running Kucerak + Company. It took a long time and a lot of hard work to get here, but I love every day of it. And like you, I am so fortunate to work with a team of smart, unique individuals whom I get to mentor, but who also mentor me in a way. They keep me on my toes. That is super exciting and makes me love my decision to open my own agency. Kucerak + Company Instagram @kucerakandco | kucerakandco.com

BENTLEY MEEKER LIGHTING, STAGING & ART By Teresa Fisher
Melissa Rivers’ Wedding at The Plaza
THE VISION Vivid memories take the kind of snapshots that are difficult to recreate. Think of the beach on an overcast day — the waves tumble forward, catching any white glow that breaks through the clouds. The familiar image is easy to picture, but the feeling is almost impossible to replicate in a different time and place. But that’s what Bentley Meeker, lighting designer extraordinaire, does every day. He converts physical spaces into inspiring environments, ensuring that weddings, galas, and special occasions feel and look as momentous as the events themselves. An early gig as a Palladium stagehand — during the golden era of Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, who also owned Studio 54 — sparked Meeker’s fascination with Vari-Lite, the world’s first moving light, and “ignited the passion that became my career,” recalled Meeker.
BENTLEY MEEKER LIGHTING AND STAGING In 1990, Meeker founded his company, Bentley Meeker Lighting and Staging Inc., and soon became the go-to guy for VIP celebrations. Meeker “vividly” remembers his first high-profile event: “Eddie Murphy’s 1993 wedding in the Terrace and Grand Ballrooms of the Plaza. “That wedding, more than any other, began a lifelong love affair between the Plaza and me,” said Meeker. Meeker partic-

ularly likes designing weddings “because it’s really about making the best day of someone’s life better.” Over the years, he’s lit nuptials for a long list of famous faces, including Chelsea Clinton, Melissa Rivers, Billy Joel, Robert De Niro, and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas. As Meeker’s spectacular lighting gained widespread acclaim, he’s found fans in fashion — the versatile visionary illuminated Christian Dior’s catwalk at New York Fashion Week. Meeker also flickered the lights on some of New York’s most storied institutions, including charity events and movie premieres at MoMA, the New York Public Library, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the Hamptons he’s lit the Parrish Art Museum and had his own art show at the Southampton Arts Center.
BURNING MAN But Meeker doesn’t only light weddings, A-list events, and formal celebrations; he also creates innovative artistic projects at Burning Man, an iconic weeklong communal experience that defies any simple characterization. Meeker has previously lit the Temple at Burning Man three times. In 2011, 2013, and 2015 he took over 300 fixtures, a mile of cable, and a crew of fifteen to illuminate the festival’s main temple. Seventy thousand participants from around the world were drawn to the site by Meeker’s lights over those Social Life

THE CORE CLUB In 2017, The Core Club, a private members’ enclave with a focus on culture and art, commissioned Meeker, who has been dubbed the “lighting guru” by the media, to create a light sculpture for its lobby. When Meeker isn’t creating art or lambent ambiance for weddings and corporate events or taking part in festival rituals, he enjoys some downtime, playing guitar with his son, Jensen. After 20 years of lighting weddings, parties, public functions, and fashion fêtes, Meeker’s “seen a lot logistically,” and isn’t fazed by the technical difficulties that surface during the design process, specifically in his campaign for quality of light. “Because of the proliferation of fluorescent and LED lights, people are sacrificing quality of light for efficiency,” noted Meeker.
LIGHT X DESIGN Light, in its many facets, is to Bentley what music is to Philip Glass. “Light is the most powerful tool we have to create any feeling,” said Meeker. Growing up between the United States, the Bahamas, and Canada, Meeker was exposed to various forms of light SocialLifeMagazine.com
around the world. When he moved to Manhattan at the age of 14, his passion was ignited. While living in the city he was constantly exposed to illumination; it was all around him so he dove in. Events Meeker has done this year include the MoMA Armory Party, Hudson Yards grand opening, Clinton Foundation spring gala, Men in Black premiere, Love Ball, and Alexander Wang fashion show. Meeker’s first book, Light X Design, is an expansive and beautiful study in what light can be. Images of Meeker’s work fill the pages. “It’s an artbook presented almost like a photo album, but an album for light and the infinite possibilities that lie within it,” said Meeker of his publishing debut in 2010.
LIGHT SCULPTURES During the last five years, Meeker has had multiple museum and gallery shows of his light sculptures, including a one man show at the Whitney Museum of Art, and clients such as Lincoln Center and the Guggenheim. He’s shown at the Garvey|Simon and Penticton Art Gallery in British Columbia. Bentley’s work is also on view at his studio. Bentley Meeker bentleymeekerart.com

CAROLE CRIST & BROCK PIERCE CO-HOST AN EXTRAORDINARY NIGHT FOR PUERTO RICO By Bennett Marcus
T
he Rebuild Puerto Rico Gala will be a highlight of this year’s Miami Art Basel. The gala will raise funds to benefit various non-profit organizations committed to helping the people of Puerto Rico. “Puerto Rico has more artists per capita than any-where in the United States, hence the reason for doing the gala at Art Basel,” says philanthropist, entrepreneur and cryptocurrency pioneer Brock Pierce. Pierce is teaming up with Carole Crist, the former First Lady of Florida Carole Crist and the CEO of CLC Global Advisors, to plan and organize the fundraiser. The event, which will take place at the prestigious Faena Hotel Miami Beach, will not only focus on the damage caused by Hurricane Maria, but also raise awareness of Puerto Rico in general. Pierce often says that “Puerto Rico has a PR problem.” He believes the solution is making people more aware of Puerto Rico’s rich culture, art, and cuisine, as well as the opportunity for economic development and innovative job creation in Puerto Rico. “It’s one of those places that most people have just kind of forgotten exists, and it’s one of the most beautiful aspects of the United States,” says Pierce. Pierce has adopted Puerto Rico as his home and quickly became one of its biggest boosters, helping to fund several projects aimed at improving conditions on the island through his nonprofit Integro Foundation. integrofoundation.com “Brock is Mr. Puerto Rico,” says Crist. “I have never met someone so intellectually engaged, with an ability to mobilize people for good. His sincerity and authenticity, as it relates to his commitment to Puerto Rico and this project, is simply extraordinary.” Crist felt it was a natural fit to join forces with Pierce due to the strong ties between the state of Florida and Puerto Rico, in addition to her company’s mission of “Capital with a Conscience and improving the lives of people.” Crist recognizes that Pierce is “uniquely positioned as a global entrepreneur and philanthropist,” and believes “the gala is a really important project.” clcglobaladvisors.com

SCOTT HALE CURATOR OF LUXURY COMES TO THE HAMPTONS By Fallon Harrington

n a world obsessed with Instagrammable moments, Scott Hale of Sybarite Lifestyle Management is a secret weapon for those aspiring to have every aspect of their domestic bliss perfected. As a lifestyle manager, Scott’s role extends far beyond that of a traditional estate manager, concierge, or personal assistant. Sybarite offers diverse and highly personalized services, including domestic staff training, household and grounds maintenance, home renovations, vehicle fleet care, event planning, and travel management, to name just a few. “I elevate the domestic experience so my clients may live the life that they desire. Life experiences are a bit like theater, and it’s my job to set the stage so clients have more time to enjoy the performance,” says Hale. From an early age, Hale was drawn to hospitality. At fifteen, his first job was in a local restaurant. Working in hotels cemented his decision to attend Cornell University’s prestigious School of Hotel Administration. After graduating, he spent fifteen years working for luxury hotels such as Four Seasons and Regent International Hotels & Resorts. In 2003, Scott moved to Beverly Hills and opened Sybarite Lifestyle Management to put his unique talents to work for a variety of clients, including those listed on Forbes 400: The Wealthiest in America. “I built Sybarite upon the belief that when everything in the home is functioning perfectly, the same precision flows into other facets of a client’s life,” he says. Last year, Scott relocated to Long Island’s East End to bring his unique services and expertise to the Hamptons, while continuing to serve clients wherever he’s needed. What is one thing all your clients have in common? They’ve all worked hard to achieve their success and they all share the challenge of being pressed for time. They’re eager to capitalize on their free time and focus on what is important to them. What drew you to the world of private service? Growing up, I was always fascinated to know what the interiors of beautiful estates and town homes were like . . . My father installed doors for the premier home builders in Washington, DC. I’d wander job sites enthralled by their maze-like floor plans and grandeur. Pairing this early love of residences with my formal training in luxury hospitality made for a natural progression into private service.

What are some of your recommended simple tips for living life more luxuriously? Luxury is in the details and elevating the ordinary. Keep freshly cut citrus in the refrigerator with your favorite pre-mix for effortless, spontaneous cocktails. Crystal barware and linen cocktail napkins make the everyday act of serving a beverage more special. I’m an advocate of being in the moment by disengaging from technology.
