PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Welcome to our New York autumn issue. As we are best known for our Hamptons issues in the summer, please note we publish two issues in the city for our loyal readers. In the future, we will continue to publish these issues every fall and winter in addition to our six summer issues between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The autumn season in Manhattan is exciting. Crisp air, colorful foliage, and new offerings from this great city’s cultural institutions. The city has so much to offer this time of year that it can be quite difficult keeping up with it. From charity events to the opera, theater, and museums to fabulous shopping and great dining, the options to fill our weekends are endless. I highly recommend participating in this city’s vibrant opportunities. This means less social media and more social life. Detach from the digital world and seek out new friendships and adventure in NYC. You will be pleasantly surprised by the results. Now that November is here, you have only short time to enjoy the remaining weeks of autumn. I hope you make it a great one!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Does sweater weather inspire you? It definitely makes me happy because it means holidays and time with loved ones are just around the corner. There are so many things to do around this time in the city! Personally, on particularly crisp days, I love to go to Jacques Torres and enjoy a heavy dark chocolate. As maligned as it is, if you find yourself in yoga pants sipping a pumpkin latte, enjoy it because they’re delicious. I tend to really focus on food this time of year when the specter of a summer body is no longer looming over me. Having friends over for a festive dinner really brightens up my week. I love planning a fun menu with twists on comfort food and enjoy losing a few hours on Pinterest when planning flower decor. Somehow I associate the coming of cold weather with the creation of warm broths, hot beverages, and good times. I hope you connect with both new and old friends while sharing great food together! ’Tis the season! With love,
Devorah Rose

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR
Fall in New York City is a picturesque and magical time of year. Aside from the delightful temperatures and breathtaking foliage, there are countless ways to enjoy the pleasures of this spectacular season. The activities during the fall in this iconic city are endless. From time spent in scenic parks enjoying the changing leaves with stunning shades of yellow, red, and orange, to daily excursions including festivals, parades, street fairs and assorted other events, NYC during the autumn season will undoubtedly create a memorable experience. One of the main events marking the transition from summer to fall in Manhattan is New York Fashion Week where international brands showcase their collections to the public. In this issue, we feature a new contemporary resort-ready clothing brand, Kyle and Shahida that was launched during NYFW by the dynamic American actress Kyle Richards and fashion designer Shahida Clayton. The colorful collection, inspired by nature and wildlife and featuring bold prints, was one of the most talked about runway events having more stars both walking and seated in the audience, than any other fashion show.
Aside from NYC’s luxury brand shopping, chic restaurants, and extraordinary entertainment, autumn activities in New York City are incomparable. From festivals such as the Feast of San Gennaro, the New York Film Festival, the New York Comedy Festival, and New York Comic Con, to various parades such as the Village Halloween Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the city that never sleeps does not disappoint. Don’t forget to visit one of the many parks in the Big Apple such as the world-renowned Central Park, the lovely Prospect Park, or the High Line- an exquisite park running above the streets in NYC; each has its own charm and history. Perhaps, you might want to engage in something a little more physical like ice skating at Rockerfeller Center or running in the New York City Marathon. Whatever activities or entertainment you choose, whether you are vacationing or are one of New York City’s 8 million residents, this amazing city has indescribable charm offering an enchanting fall experience that is simply unforgettable! Warm wishes,
Christine Montanti

I
n a twist of fate, Nigora Tabayer’s namesake line, TABAYER, was born. In 2016, she shared a sketch of a custom initial pendant with the diamond house of Graff, hoping they could bring her personalized design to life. Graff not only produced the pendant, but was so impressed that they encouraged her to return with designs for the remaining 25 letters of the English alphabet. Three years later, in March 2019, Nigora launched her debut Eye Collection during Paris Fashion Week. The Eye Collection, custommade with 18k white gold, VS+ diamonds, and an emerald, has quickly become a style staple — on and off the red carpet — for itgirls, including Vanessa Hudgens, Elsa Hosk, Candice Swanepoel, Bella Hadid, Caroline Vreeland, Shanina Shaik, and many more. This holiday season, the designer presents her “The Third Eye Series” to complement the popular pendants. The line features an array of earrings and rings, adorned with the brand’s iconic pairing of VS+ diamonds and emeralds; each piece is a playful take on the protective eye, TABAYER’s signature emblem. Raised internationally between Europe and the United States by artistic parents, Nigora creates through a global and progressive lens. Through her designs, she hopes to encourage positive introspection and elicit themes of energy, movement, and freedom. ABOUT TABAYER Debuted in Paris in 2019, the house of TABAYER goes beyond making beautiful jewelry; the label was founded to represent personal and individual values. In every design, there are multiple layers of meaning, exploring the complexity, charisma, and creativity of the wearer. Each bespoke piece — 18k white gold, VS+ diamonds, and emeralds as centerpieces — is inspired by the protective eye; the amulets fuse ancient lore and contemporary finery across elegant silhouettes with sweeping lines and striking gemstones. The founder and creative director, Nigora Tabayer, designs with heartfelt depth in mind — she aims to capture a spirit of diverse womanhood and imbue each stone with protection and strength.

Gloomy Florals Don’t pack away your summer florals just yet. If you own dark and gloomy floral prints you can rock them straight through the fall season. Dark and brooding florals were all the rage on the fall/winter 2019 runways. Designers from Alexander McQueen to Dior showed this sweet yet stern trend for autumn. Blossom this season and get in on this edgy look and sport a shadowy flower printed dress, skirt, or jacket.

’Tis the Season for Plaid As colder days sneak in, it’s time to pack away those light looks for warmer days and bring on cold-weather fashion. This season it’s all about layering prints. One of our favorite prints to mingle is plaid. Go full 1990s nostalgia and combine a plaid printed jacket with a matching pair of sneakers and Burberry shades. For a more subtle approach, carry a Marc Jacobs cross-body bag with a plaid strap.

MEET THE DESIGNER HANIA’S ANYA COLE TURNS CASHMERE INTO MAGIC By Cecilia Bloom
H
ania New York, a luxury knitwear collection founded by Anya Cole in 2012, brings cashmere lovers pieces that are individually knit by hand in New York City. The collections are born using Scottish and Italian cashmeres from the finest mills in the world. Light and butter-soft, the pieces have incredible drape and a relaxed silhouette. Inspired by Anya’s background as a classically trained ballet dancer, the designs embody ease of movement, creativity, and individuality. They are simply so soft and sophisticated! Social Life sat down with Anya to learn more about her exquisite cashmere designs. What inspired you to pursue cashmere fashion? The pure luxury of the yarn and the way it drapes and feels on the body. Your pieces are so sumptuous and soft! How do you source the materials? We work with only the finest yarn mills in Italy and Scotland and have them create our own custom twists and colors. The custom twists mean that all our pieces can be machine washed and dried. Empowering women is at the heart of your company mission. Can you tell us how you find local women knitters? It happens organically as each knitter reaches out to family and friends in her community who are gifted knitters. All of our knitters have come to us through word of mouth. Is there one particular piece that truly reflects the Hania New York style? Any of the larger pieces — the bigger the better. I don’t see the larger sweaters as covering up . . . whoever you are will shine through. We absolutely love how you custom make each piece depending on the buyer’s preferences. How quickly can you deliver an ordered piece? Usually it will take a few days for an accessory, two weeks for a sweater, and three to four weeks for a major statement coat.
SocialLifeMagazine.com
What are your thoughts on cashmere in the summer? Cashmere is a natural fiber and so it breathes, especially when mixed with some silk and cotton in lightweight open-weave stitch styles. We make styles that can be fabulous cover-ups or something to wear in the Anya Cole evening at the beach or on a yacht when the ocean breezes can get quite chilly. What is your personal favorite piece? The large Mara sweater — either solid or color-blocked. If Hania had a mantra, what would it be? As my mother used to tell me growing up in Poland, ‘If you need it, you make it.’ Hania New York hanianewyork.com

Dr Sebagh Sun & City Protection SPF 50+ drsebagh.com Don’t want to shell out a kingly sum for serum and salves? Stem the aging process with Dr Sebagh Sun & City Protection SPF 50+ ($50). This is like hazmat gear for your face: The highly innovative cream not only shields skin against the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays, it also provides protection against HEV (high-energy visible) light emitted by smartphones, tablets, laptops, and the sun. And we didn’t even know that we were supposed to protect against our laptops. Dr Sebagh delivers ultimate protection and peace of mind.
Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Men molecular-cosmetics.com Yes, it’s a strange name for a men’s product, but Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Men ($215) is perhaps one of the best, and certainly most effective, men’s 24-hour moisturizers available. Yes, it does have a lot of fancy ingredients (purslane, skullcap, and telomerase, to name a few), but who cares? The luxurious, unscented cream is absorbed quickly, reduces redness and swelling immediately, and leaves you looking fresh and vital right after application. Invite Babs to your face for a little pre-party with the Dr. Barbara Sturm Clarifying Serum ($250). DR . STEPHEN T. GREENBERG INSIGHTS FROM CELEBRITY COSMETIC SURGEON By Blaire Bass
C
elebrity cosmetic surgeon Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg has 25 years of experience and has performed thousands of surgeries and procedures. Social Life Magazine sat down with him to learn more about his practice and perspective. He is a leader in cosmetic surgery who offers cutting-edge technologies and advanced procedures in his state-of-theart Manhattan and Long Island surgical centers and med-spas. Can you describe your philosophy on beauty regarding plastic surgery? I want my patients to feel good about themselves, and I always strive to provide patients with a natural result with minimal recovery time. Many of my patients tell me that after their procedure, their newly found confidence allowed them to go for that job or promotion, get back into the dating scene, or even just wear the clothes they always dreamed of. Oftentimes, they tell me that no one can pinpoint that they’ve had a procedure, but do notice that they look refreshed, younger, and more vibrant. I help their outer appearance reflect their inner beauty. Do you believe plastic surgery can help a person’s self-esteem? Absolutely! It’s what drives many patients to come and see me and my staff. It’s always amazing to see the difference in how a patient sees themselves from their first consultation to their post-operative checkup. They walk taller, wear clothes more comfortably, and you see a sparkle that just wasn’t there before.
Are men fans of plastic surgery? Yes, and the number of male patients seeking cosmetic procedures is growing. About 30% of our practice is now men’s procedures, and they are requesting all kinds of non-invasive and surgical procedures. We perform the latest hair restoration procedure, called NeoGraft, which uses the patient’s own hair! Many men have also begun to see the benefits of procedures such as liposuction, male chest reduction, face and eyelid lifts, Botox and fillers, and are also enjoying treatments in our med-spa. Which procedures are common among teens? In addition to our teen skin program at our med-spa, we see teens for a variety of surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, otoplasty, female and male breast reduction (gynecomastia), and other corrective procedures. How effective is a mini facelift? It can be very effective for the right patients. I evaluate each patient thoroughly, and once we discuss their aesthetic goals, we determine the best course of treatment. Patients can see a refreshed and natural result with a mini-facelift, and because it’s less invasive, there is very little downtime. Oftentimes, I combine a mini-facelift with J Plasma, my Plasma-Lift, to achieve greater skin retraction. What is all the hype about a new injectable called Jeuveau? Is it really the #Newtox? It can be confusing for patients to navigate the variety of injectables on the market. It requires the guidance of an experienced, credentialed physician to help patients who are seeking aesthetic injectables to select the appropriate material specifically for their individual needs. Jeuveau is the newest neurotoxin in the marketplace and relaxes the muscles (just like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin) to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows. The result is a smoother, refreshed appearance. Fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm are injected underneath the skin to restore lost volume and provide a rejuvenated facial contour. Another injectable we’ve seen gain popularity is Kybella, a treatment that eliminates the small, stubborn pockets of fat located under the chin. Kybella injections are performed in my office, can be done in just minutes, and involve minimal discomfort. The results are amazing! 212.319.4999 | greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com Social Life

O
n the seventh anniversary of my having neurological paralysis from Lyme disease and suffering a devastating treadmill injury, I wondered if I would ever work again. Although many problems had been solved, some complications and symptoms persisted. I exceeded milestones I had set for myself, but as an author, sitting was my daily necessity. Yet sitting was a painful reminder of all that had happened and the things I couldn’t do anymore. Thankfully, I now have tools to make sure muscles are firing and it’s now possible for me to sit for hours while I write. Focusing on what I had accomplished, and not what was still ahead of me, I decided to give back and help others on their own journeys to better health. In April 2019, I enrolled in a health- and life-coaching school. My launching of Live and Heal Health and Life Coaching is a natural progression of writing health and wellness articles and finishing the final leg of my own healing journey. My niches include Lyme disease, weight loss, digestion, PTSD, and trauma. Personally, I used holistic modalities to regain my strength and offer this in my coaching practice as well. I teach holistic modalities to clients and also speak at events of like-minded health-conscious people. One of the most important concepts is learning to re-frame our lives with positive thoughts and words. Claiming your illness or weakness or problem attracts negative energy to an already compromised body. Using grounding and visualization are wonderful tools for meeting life’s challenges calmly. Putting our feet on the ground (grass or sand) can realign our body’s energy in a positive way. Visualizing our healing in a positive light changes the landscape of how we feel and how fast we heal. I offer cleanses and guide my clients in their renewed gut health. The focus is on anti-inflammatory protocols with discussion about the effect of lectins in our diet and food sensitivities. I also share healing recipes and give help with food prep and shopping. Reading labels is imperative so that we can count chemicals not calories. Certain chemicals have a negative effect on our bodies. I also do ninety-day coaching programs and six-month programs for total transformation. All programs meet the client where they

Some of the most popular are listed as follows. TIGHTEN AND CONTOUR • Ultherapy — uses ultrasound to tighten skin by promoting collagen, and usually only one treatment is necessary. • TempSure ENVI, Tempsure Firm, and Tempsure Vitalia — FDA-approved in 2018, uses radio frequency (RF) to tighten skin anywhere on the body, from eyelids to vaginas. • Genius RF — a radio frequency microneedling device to smooth and tighten skin virtually anywhere on the body. • Sculptra Aesthetic — an injectable to fill deep lines, folds, serious wrinkling, and hollows. It works by promoting collagen over time. • Nova Thread Lift — absorbable PDO threads that work immediately to lift skin. They promote collagen and result in continued improvement as they slowly dissolve over several months. SocialLifeMagazine.com

DR . ARASH AKHAVAN AN APPROACH ABOVE REPROACH By Jacob Puck
K
nown for diligent attention to detail and exceptional client relationships, Dr. Arash Akhavan is the founder of Manhattan’s famed Dermatology & Laser Group and in short time has become a legend of cosmetic medicine in the New York City area. As summer winds down, and people head back to the city, back to real life, and back to (ugh) reality, Social Life Magazine wanted the skinny on what separates the good from the great in the area of cosmetic surgery. One thing we hear often is that patients who want realistic and lasting results really should consider a cornucopia of possible treatments. It’s true. Too often the practitioner takes a singular approach to treatment — over-reliance on one cosmetic procedure modality, whether injectables, surgery, lasers, or something else. This mistake can be due to the physician’s inexperience, or the physician’s and/or patient’s poor sense of aesthetics. Also, in many cases, due to the high cost of many devices and products used in cosmetic procedures, some practitioners may not have the devices and products necessary for providing a complete, natural-appearing aesthetic solution for their patients.
Tell us about your solution. The solution to this problem is our trademarked STL Method, which stresses the importance of approaching every cosmetic concern with an effort to smooth and tighten the skin and underlying structures, and lift treated areas against gravity. To smooth-tightenlift the face, neck, or body we use a variety of techniques depending on a patient’s individual needs and the area being treated. For example, in one area, we may use a combination of lasers, injections, and creams; in another area, we may use ultrasound and radio frequency-based devices, threads, and growth factor injections. We have set recommendations that over a decade of experience have proven effective in specific cases, and we would love to discuss them with you. Let’s focus on the face — when summer’s over is when a lot of people want to make some improvement. Our goal for the face and neck is to smooth away fine lines, tighten the skin to make deep folds less apparent, and to lift the skin to
reveal the beauty of the normal contours of the jawbone, chin, and cheeks. We do this by: • erasing sun damage and building collagen and elastic tissue in the superficial skin; • building collagen in a deeper layer of connective tissue called the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system), producing a skin-tightening effect; • restoring volume to areas where it has been lost; and • lifting the skin against the muscles and bones beneath. What does this involve? First of all, everyone is different, but it’s possible that some combo may include a combination of fractional resurfacing lasers with or without microneedling, PRP injections, and Botox for muscleinduced wrinkles; generating broad swaths of new collagen across both the superficial skin layer and deeper collagen layers; and lifting the sagging tissue back into place. Social Life

Dr. Arash Akhavan and Alyssa DiBenedetto
So, what’s involved in smoothing? The superficial skin is managed through a combination of fractional resurfacing lasers with or without microneedling, PRP injections, and Botox for muscle-induced wrinkles, all paired together with a good at-home skincare regimen that includes regular use of sunscreen, antioxidants, and skin brightening creams. Let’s keep going — how about tightening? To tighten the skin, we need to generate broad swaths of new collagen across both the superficial skin layer and deeper collagen layers. These deep layers of collagen are too deep to get to through the surface using lasers or microneedles. The way to get to these deeper layers is by using radio frequency or ultrasound wavelengths of energy. In our office we use both. The heat that is generated in the deeper skin safely stimulates collagen production uniformly over broad areas of skin, effectively shrinking skin that has been stretched out through aging and returning it closer to its natural size. And last but not least, lifting? As we age, the skin and subcutaneous fat loses its firm attachment to the underlying facial muscles and bones and starts to sag with SocialLifeMagazine.com
gravity. A key part of facial and neck rejuvenation is lifting the sagging tissue back into place. This can be achieved by a combination of replacing lost volume in the deep fat and muscle layers with fillers and rebuilding the collagen in the deep attachment of the skin to underlying tissue through use of ultrasound technology. Further lifting can be achieved by use of biocompatible and absorbable PDO (polydioxanone) threads that stimulate collagen production; the threads themselves are degraded by the body over the course of six months without any scarring. It sounds like it can be complicated. That thinking is a barrier for many people, but most people find their procedures to be very manageable. People just need to take the first step and get a consult!

GREAT HAIR NEVER GETS OLD By JaCoB puCk
Sonsoles Gonzalez
W
omen shouldn’t have an expiration date. That philosophy, says Sonsoles Gonzalez, was the impetus for the wildly popular Better Not Younger hair, scalp, and inner-health line geared to the 45+ set. “My passion is to empower women who know and feel like there is still a lot to get done! It’s important for everyone to understand that life doesn’t end at what has been defined as middle age,” says Gonzalez. “Despite what society thinks, women are powerful at this age, and they have an enormous amount of confidence.” Gonzalez, a veteran of Procter and Gamble and L’Oréal, and one of the masterminds behind big name commercial brands like Pantene and Herbal Essences, knows something about hair and scalp . . . and the ways that age impacts their health. “When I retired, I started to realize that there simply weren’t any great hair products for people my age,” says Gonzalez, who is 54. She explains that many are not aware of changes in the body chemistry that impact hair density. More troubling, she says, there are surprisingly few national brands that are formulated to respond to these changes. “I kind of always joked when I reviewed product briefs targeting women 18 to 44: What’s happening with women over 45? The reality is that hair changes a lot, but the brands never addressed it,” she says. As women age, hair follicles shrink and the body produces less sebum, which makes hair drier and thinner. On top of that, women are getting the greys, coloring, and doing other processing that impacts the quality of hair and scalp. “It’s a perfect storm for the hair,” she says.
So, she got to thinking about formulations and branding. “One of the things that was important to me was to ensure that the brand wasn’t about turning back time, but rather celebrating women my age. Most brands only speak to millennials,” she says. “Brands that do speak to older women focus on gardening, or cruise ships, or spending time with their grandchildren.” With that, Better Not Younger was born, and Gonzalez began to change the narrative in the industry, the one that suggested that youth was the only standard of beauty. Better Not Younger, which launched in March as a premium brand, is a collection of treatments designed to respond to a specific age-related hair or scalp concern. They are formulated to handle strands that are fine, fragile, frizzy and chemically-treated, and a dehydrated scalp with diminished follicles. Better Not Younger’s haircare products are packed with essential oils and ceramides, and its Significant Other Hair Fortifying supplements are loaded with biotin, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, and D3 to promote healthy hair growth. “The line is doing exceptionally well,” says Gonzalez, who gives kudos to Matt Kandela and Blake Enting from the New York agency Dear Future for helping articulate the brand’s positioning. “It’s proof that we are still out there, we are having fun, and we want something other than what’s traditionally been offered.”

ANGELO DAVID WHY YOU HAVE THIN HAIR & WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT By Ann Grenier
P
eruse through Instagram long enough and you are sure to observe your feed graced with pictures of women sporting long, outrageously thick or highly-pigmented hair. Hair has always been a significant element of style and self-expression, but the outrageous, over-the-top looks have become more mainstream than ever thanks to the growing supply of faux hair, hair color technology, and celebrities setting trends that throw convention or achievability out the window. The result? More women — and men — feel that their natural hair isn’t growing as long or as thick as they’d like it to, and are turning to places like Angelo David Salon to get answers and find solutions. Over the last few years, Angelo David Pisacreta, the owner and creative director of Angelo David Salon, has seen a steady increase in young women coming in for consultations to discuss their thinning hair. Despite the trend for thick luscious locks, the reality is, thinning hair and hair loss is a growing concern for good reason. Forty percent of women have visible hair loss by the time they reach age 40, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Two-thirds of men will begin to see hair loss by age 35, according to the American Hair Loss Association, and after 50, 85% of men and 50% of women will experience some form of pattern hair loss. So, what’s causing this trend to rise, and what can we do about it? This is where Angelo comes in. Hair loss and thinning hair has been his specialty for over 25 years, as he grew up around hair his whole life. His father, Carmine, was a pioneer in men’s hair styling, and taught Angelo how to make toupees and wigs.
When Angelo opened his salon, which now lives on Madison Avenue, he created a space for women and men to come in and speak candidly about their hair issues in a private consultation room, and he could make a custom wig or hair piece to exactly match a client’s natural hair. Angelo and his team can create fully customized wigs, couture hair extensions, hairpieces, toppers, clip-in extensions, ponytails, fillers, or even bangs. Part of what makes Angelo David Salon special is The Couture Hair Boutique, which displays samples of all the hair additions right on the salon floor. The Couture Hair Boutique is an interactive experience for clients, who can take the hair off the shelf and touch and feel the hair for themselves. When women understand that the celebrities they see on TV and on the internet with thick long hair are wearing additions like those offered at Angelo David Salon, it changes the way they feel about it. rom Montauk to Brooklyn, Punch Pedal House is receiving rave reviews from those brave enough to give it a try. The fitness studio houses both HIIT indoor cycling and boxing bootcamp, allowing members to reap the benefits of these two dynamic workouts in one place. Created by a former D1 athlete, Joey Foley, and a classically trained ballerina and fashion model, Nada Vasilijevic, the workouts are designed to change your body through carefully crafted classes. An interview with Joey and Nada follows. What would you say is the most difficult part of running your own fitness studio? Nada Vasilijevic: Balance. Our lives are limited outside of the studio due to our perfectionist personalities. We take on all the responsibilities: janitorial, front desk, instruction, you name it. We did this to experience and understand every aspect and then teach our employees how we need our business to run. It’s about building a strong foundation, one that allows us to stand apart and create a loyal following. What sets your cycling and boxing bootcamp classes apart from the rest? Joey Foley: We’re like Instagram. We respect the idea and pathway social networking sites like MySpace paved for us, but we’re the next generation. Our formulas have been methodically designed based on the training practices of athletes who have competed. There are similarities to outsiders, but unless you have taken our spin and boxing classes, you might as well think all cycling and boxing classes are alike.
A client said that we are the unapologetic approach to fitness. We want you to be bold, but composed. Take life and love it, but still make your story with authority. It is an experience and workout that comes second to none. How do you describe your style of teaching? NV: Our styles are similar but different. Joey has always used sports as an escape. so when he opens the door to his clients everything disappears: worry, distress. And he inspires his class to do the same. I, too, encourage my class to forget about their stress and just be in the moment with me. I want them to overcome their physical limits, enjoy the music and the choreography, and let the endorphins take over. We both strive to have our classes leave better than when they came in. What’s next for Punch Pedal House? JF: Because of the success of our pop-up in the Hamptons, we will be looking for a good partner/landlord that wants a stable, longterm client. Someone who is willing to take a chance on us and believes in our philosophy. There is a real demand for indoor cycling and boxing classes Out East, and it’s pretty much an open market. We are looking at studios in Manhattan. We are ready to expand and we have the demand. We have people coming from Manhattan to Brooklyn daily. If we can succeed in this little section of Brooklyn, Manhattan will be a lot easier. All ventures have their issues. This is a marathon not a sprint for us. “When I met Dr. Roman, I’d been having pain on the outside part of my hip for years that worsened despite steroid injections. I told him that I was diagnosed with bursitis. HOW TO KEEP THE SUMMER BALL ROLLING By Stacey Griffith Founding instructor of Soul Cycle, Best-Selling Author and Podcast Co-Host of THE WAY
L
et’s be honest: Summer is most likely everyone’s favorite season, and, frankly, you look and feel your best from June through September. I happen to be slightly jaded as a transplant Californian when it comes to summers in NYC . . . because they actually end. When you are a resident of any coastal West Coast city, summer is never really over; the days just cool off a little come November. There are no heavy jackets to bring up from a basement, no gloves, no chunky cable-knit sweaters. There’s no need for a monster closet in Los Angeles unless your last name begins with K. I never imagined a day when I’d have to send a rollingrack of jackets to The Real Real because I had accumulated too many over the past decade because of the global warming crisis, aka the coldest %$#&^*# winters in Manhattan’s history. I’m already bracing for my seasonal depression. Let’s talk about it. Hanging on to summer as long as we can should be our goal here, together, all of us. Let’s make sure we take advantage of every second we can up until Thanksgiving. I am begging all of you to ignore the No White Pants After Labor Day rule. It’s not 1950, and we do not live by the rules of archaic commercialism precepts, so we can start there. When you come to the Hamptons during the fall, promise me you will carry the spirit of the summer into your lives by buying every single sale item of clothing that is associated with the Hamptons, for it will make you happy when you wear it wherever you go. SoulCycle has Hamptons-related swag like no other, so be sure to drop into the Barn location on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton before you leave town. Let’s not forget our local farmers. We keep their businesses thriving by eating their delicious veggies, fruit, and in some cases their wild caught fish, so make sure you load up the car with everything you can squeeze onto your Escalade dashboard. Fruit and veggies when in season are superfood for your body. Best you get them into your system before the summer crops are depleted. Make sure to stop by one last time to your favorite Hamptons restaurants, shops, car wash, flower guy, manicurist, hair salon, and give them a little something to say thanks. Many of the people who work out here are seriously wiped when the summer crowd leaves, and that little sliver of appreciation does not go unnoticed.
I plan on squeaking out every last bit of summer by teaching out here on weekends if I can until the Barn doors close in mid-November! Social Life

TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELING By kristy rao
A
s a nutritionist, my job is to help my clients maintain healthy lifestyles, even while traveling. Together we make a solid plan, so that they won’t steer too far off course. Whether you’re staying with friends or at a hotel, below are my top tips for traveling:
1
Think ahead and avoid airline food. Bring a big salad with chicken to eat on the plane. Pack healthy snacks such as organic trail mix (raw cashew nuts, goji berries and cacao nibs) and hard boiled eggs. Plan B is to fast during your flight. Timerestricted eating has a slew of health benefits.
2
Remember your vitamins: vitamin C and/or a multivitamin to prevent getting sick. Probiotics are insurance for traveler’s belly. Take melatonin (and an eye mask) on international flights to align with your destination’s bedtime. This plus fasting prevents jet lag.
3 4
Call ahead to request that the hotel remove all food except fruit from your room. Avoid temptation . . . and over-pricing.
5
Don’t be afraid to customize a menu. Opt for a plain vegetable omelet. Ask for berries and honey to top plain yogurt. Opt for a lean protein and ask for steamed vegetables on the side when ordering dinner.
6
Discover farm-to-table restaurants. Search directly in Google, Yelp, or Trip Advisor for keywods like “grassfed” or “gluten-free” along with “restaurant” and the name of the city you’re visiting. My favorite one in the Hamptons is Babette’s in East Hampton.
7
If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, perhaps they give access to one. The Mill House Inn in East Hampton will give any of their guests a day pass. They also have bikes on the premises. Remember your sneakers and workout clothes.
Kristy Rao in the waterfront home at 124 Brennans Moor, Water Mill. Contact: Dawn Hagen, The Brennan-Hagen Team, Saunders & Associates
8
Your hotel may also offer a yoga class, so be sure to request the schedule in advance. Some studios even offer newcomers a free first class.
9 10
Walk often. You will discover new things and offset any moderate indulgences.
Pack a travel-sized blender and some packets of your favorite protein powder. I recommend plant-based ones such as Standard Process or Sunwarrior.
It’s easiest if you pick a hotel with healthy options. My pick in the Hamptons is definitely the Mill House Inn: toxic-free products, ionized alkaline reverse osmosis water, and plenty of healthy breakfast options. They even have oat milk! That being said, vacation is not a good time for weight loss. Instead, make maintenance your goal. And, enjoy! Social Life

Google health food stores in the area. Stock up on nondairy milk, water, fruit, precut veggies, hummus, raw unsalted nuts, and plain Greek yogurt or a coconut-based one such as CocoYo. Pick up some green juice, smoothies, and some healthy meals to keep in the fridge. Keep a healthy treat on hand to resist desserts. I recommend Hu Kitchen chocolate bar and hunks (especially the cashews + vanilla bean). Have a few pieces and keep it at that.

SKINTOLOGY MEDSPA MANHATTAN THE BEST IN BEAUTY & BEYOND By Blaire Bass
N
estled within a gorgeous space in Midtown Manhattan is the jewel of all med spas: Skintology MedSpa Manhattan. With a focus on promoting health and well-being, Skintology MedSpa uses a comprehensive and personalized approach to both minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures. The field of aesthetic medicine and surgery can be overwhelming for people, so the spa’s philosophy is to educate and provide clients with tools and resources to guide smart decision-making in areas that concern appearance, age, and sexual wellness. Social Life sat down with Skintology’s business owner, the board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden, to learn more about her magical med spa: It’s been said that looking great these days is a lot easier than it was just ten years ago. How have things changed and what are people doing differently? New procedures, lifestyle choices, and new at-home skincare products have helped patients be more informed. Minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments that can yield good results with little to no downtime have also added to increased accessibility of cosmetic procedures, making it easier to look your best. Botox, dermal fillers, noninvasive fat reduction, laser hair removal, and other beauty treatments have become popular over the years. Many of our patients flock to our medical-grade skincare products, such as ZO Skin Health or SkinCeuticals to help overcome concerns such as discoloration or acne scarring. What are some popular procedures? Non-invasive body sculpting treatments are very popular now. CoolSculpting is a fat reduction procedure which works through a process known as cryolipolysis to freeze fat cells under the skin, which enables your body to naturally process and eliminate those cells to give a slimmer look. An alternative to CoolSculpting is SculpSure, which uses heat to target and melt small pockets of stubborn fat in just 25 minutes! SocialLifeMagazine.com

Are there any new beauty techniques or procedures that we should know about? At Skintology, we offer so many modern and innovative options. The Vampire Facial has grown extremely popular in recent years and involves microneedling and PRP (platelet rich plasma) to expedite healing for glowing results. We also offer radiofrequency microneedling (Vivace) which can help with pigment and texture. Any tips to help us get a great derrière? Sculptra is an alternative to a surgical version of the Brazilian buttock lift. This dermal filler can be injected into the buttocks to build volume and to create a full and more round appearance.

DR . KAVEH ALIZADEH PIONEERING BREAST ENHANCEMENT By Jacob Puck
K
aveh Alizadeh, M.D., the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, is a prominent leader in the field of plastic surgery. The unique and effective procedures that he has developed for women seeking breast enhancement are regarded as some of the most successful and enduring in the field, garnering many awards. Seeking new options that have longer-term results with less scarring, women are turning to Dr. Alizadeh for procedures such as his pioneering and trademarked breast-lift techniques. One is NaturaBra, which provides unique internal support. Another is NaturaGlow, which transfers a woman’s own fat to shape and support her breasts. Do you have statistics about the increase in breast surgery? The latest update that I have from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that, in 2018, 300,000 breast augmentations and 109,000 breast-lift procedures were performed, which is more than double what was reported in 2000. This is partly due to advancements in technology and less-invasive techniques with quicker recovery. Can you explain your proprietary NaturaBra procedure and why it is revolutionary? Traditional methods simply lift everything up and suture the skin. But breast skin lacks integrity, and it will eventually fall. The NaturaBra technique uses a woman’s own tissue to create a second layer of support, which becomes an “an internal bra” that support the breasts, especially important when implants are involved. We have also combined this procedure with a woman’s own fat to avoid the use of implants altogether. What are the benefits? Longer-term support and minimal scarring. How is its effectiveness? This is what’s really exciting. We have shown that our results hold up over time: in a 10-year follow-up of over 500 of our patients, more than 80% reported maintaining the results. What other procedures would you count as cutting edge? Until recently, the only option for scarring around implants was to replace them with new implants. Now, with our NaturaGlow procedure, I can remove implants and achieve the shape a woman wants with her own soft tissue creating soft curves and contours.
What are the advantages? Women need not worry about potential complications from silicone implants, such as leaking or scarring, or be concerned with having foreign objects in their body, and the recovery is much simpler. Plus, we often perform a Robin Hood effect: take fat from the areas that have plenty to give (thighs, buttocks, and flanks) and donate it where it’s needed most. Kaveh Alizadeh, M.D., F.A.C.S. NAOMI WATTS CAREER REACHES SPECTACULAR NEW HEIGHTS
Naomi Watts’s list of accomplishments and exciting new projects seems to be endless this year. It’s no doubt that this gorgeous superstar continues to dazzle audiences and the camera. Naomi Watts embodies the meaning of 50+ and fabulous. At 51, Watts is busier than ever. Let’s face it, she’s on fire, snagging the lead role in the Game of Thrones prequel. And, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She’s starred in Showtime’s The Loudest Voice series this summer and in Luce, a new film that debuted in September about a married couple who is forced to reckon with their idealized image of their son after an alarming discovery by a devoted high school teacher threatens his status as an all-star student. Watts speaks with a soft Australian accent, bearing little resemblance to her often high-strung or intense screen characters. Her shy smile and feminine manner hint at how her emotions are simmering very close to the surface. It’s hardly surprising that she’s earned two Oscar nominations (for playing a tsunami survivor in The Impossible and a grieving mother in 21 Grams) and is recognized as one of the finest actresses of her generation.
SocialLifeMagazine.com
“I haven’t really come across any age barrier yet — I actually believe that the work I’m doing now is more interesting than ever,” Watts says. “I had some fear about what effect getting older would have on my career, and it’s an issue that women run up against in this business. But there are so many more interesting stories that you can explore when you’re older and able to play women who have experienced so much more and have so much more to say about life.” In recent years, Watts has delivered stirring performances in The Glass Castle, The Wolf Hour, The Book of Henry, Demolition, and the short-lived TV series Gypsy, all of which draw on her unique talent for expressing intense emotion and a deep sensitivity. All of you Game of Thrones fans out there likely knew that Watts had signed on to the prequel, which she cannot comment about beyond saying that she is thrilled to enter the GoT universe: “It’s a fantastic world, isn’t it? I think there’s so many brilliant elements to that series that make it very exciting, very appealing. I don’t want to dig myself into a big hole here! [laughs] All I want to say is, it’s very exciting . . . I’ll say that again and again and again — and nothing else.”
F E AT U R E S
The prequel starring Watts began production in 2018, well before GoT ended. This series takes place thousands of years prior to the show as we know it and chronicles “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” This past September, it was reported that a second prequel was nearing a pilot order. This second GoT spinoff will reportedly focus on the House Targaryen and Daenerys’s (Emilia Clarke) ancestors. In her recent Showtime television drama series, The Loudest Voice, Watts portrayed the news anchor Gretchen Carlson, who had accused the CEO of the Fox News Channel, Roger Ailes (played by Russell Crowe), of sexual harassment, which eventually led to the end of his career. Watts recalled that working with Crowe brought out her best work: “[Russell] is a powerhouse. His voice. His sense of power. It’s scary being in a scene with someone in that part who is really thriving in it.” The 51-year-old actress is currently filming the Australian drama Penguin Bloom in Sydney, her adopted hometown after growing up in England before her mother moved the family to Australia when Naomi was 14. She remains best friends with Nicole Kidman, whom she met while they were both starting out as actresses and auditioning for parts in Sydney. Watts lives in New York City with her two sons, Alexander, 10, and Samuel, 9, from her 11-year relationship with Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan). Following their split in 2017, Watts has been in a relationship with her Gypsy series co-star Billy Crudup. You’re consistently playing roles where you’re usually confronting serious issues that resonate with most women. I’m drawn to those kinds of women because they reflect my own personal experience. Almost all my friends are like that, and I enjoy exploring their thoughts and behaviour because it resonates deeply with my own feelings and personal evolution. I’m finding that I’m [getting] . . . to inhabit deeper characters now. Life gets deeper as you age and that leads to finding roles where you have a much more profound perspective on your world. It’s a very good place to be. We’re now seeing more women’s stories being told and more women’s voices being heard in Hollywood. Did that make it all the more important for you to play Gretchen Carlson in The Loudest Voice? I connected to Gretchen Carlson because her story speaks to women everywhere. Being able to tell her story was a great privilege because she endured so much. She suffered acute emotional and sexual harassment, and yet she managed to

empower herself and fight back. She has the courage to insist that she be valued for her work and how she fought back against this very powerful man who was her boss is a story of survival and emancipation. I felt a responsibility to help bring her story to light, which is very uplifting and inspiring and which will speak to most women and encourage women in similar situations to defend themselves and call out this intolerable behaviour. She unwittingly helped launch the #MeToo movement through her actions that ultimately evolved into the unfolding of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and how so many women came together and collectively told their stories, their versions of the facts, one after the other. How do you view the struggle against sexual harassment? It’s been going on for far too long, and it’s been a turning point in history. When we look back on Carlson’s battle five or ten years from now, we’ll see how it was a critical turning point for women. Most women have been harassed at least Social Life
F E AT U R E S
once in their life, regardless of their specific job or position in a company. I mean, sexual harassment has been a systematic problem across society. I think we’re witnessing major changes unfolding in society and I never expected it to happen with such intensity. I thought it would happen. I hoped it would happen one day, but now I’m seeing really big changes taking place in front of and behind the camera. In the film Luce that came out in September, you play a mother trying to be the perfect parent to an adopted son. As a mother of two young boys yourself, how do you sort out all the feelings that moms experience in trying to be the ideal parent? Moms are always multitasking and struggling to get their kids ready for school, making sure they’re eating properly, and usually racing around trying to get things done during the day. Working moms also have the stress of wanting to succeed in their careers and still make sure they’re spending enough time with their children. You’re always plagued by guilt and no matter how much you get done, you’re always thinking you could have done better.
As your children grow older, do you look forward to letting them see some of your films? I can’t wait. For the moment they’ve only seen a few clips here and there of my movies, and they’re going to have to wait several more years before I can show them more. I want my kids to be proud of the work I’ve done, and I look forward to the time where they can really see what their mother has been doing all this time when I’m away from home! Would you prefer that your children avoid following you into the acting profession? I would hope that they develop many different interests in life and then see where that takes them. What would worry me is how they would deal with the uncertainties of the business. I struggled a lot early in my career and I know so many actors who worked hard and didn’t find a lot of success. It can be a hard life. I told my mom when I was 17 that I was quitting high school [to pursue acting] and I know I would never let my children do that.

THE BIGGEST LITTLE GAME IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL It’s a Family Affair By Patrick Shannon With Contributions By Kerry C. Regan
PREFACE “This year is college football’s 150th anniversary; it is a very special time for the game,” said Jim Metzger, the CEO and founder of The Whitmore Agency, and namesake of the recently renamed James C. Metzger National Football Foundation Suffolk County Chapter. “Last year 47 million fans attended college football games. The sport has an amazing ability to draw massive numbers of people together and provide life-long remembered experiences. On November 16, there will be an event that rises to the highest level of college football uniqueness. Two Division III schools, Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland will meet for the 61st time to play for the Cortaca Jug. They will do so, as no other Division III schools have ever done, playing the game at MetLife Stadium, home of the National Football League’s New York Giants and New York Jets. And, there is a wonderful, personal, family story unveiling on the following pages. Enjoy it. We at Whitmore want to thank Bob Garone, the president and founder of Rosemar Construction; Ithaca College; and the National Football Foundation NY Chapter for the privilege and opportunity to be the presenting sponsor of the 2019 Cortaca Jug.”

HISTORY The Cortaca Jug is the trophy given to the winner of the annual college football game played between the Red Dragons of the State University of New York at Cortland and the Bombers of Ithaca College. The match-up is one of the most prominent in Division III football. The Cortaca game typically sells out, with thousands of fans packed into either the Cortland or Ithaca stadium. The Cortaca Jug was introduced to an already competitive rivalry by the captains of the two teams. In 1959, while driving in nearby Homer, the Cortland football captain, Tom Decker, stopped at a yard sale and purchased a $2 jug from a local farmer. He thought it could be used as a trophy during the annual game between the two teams. After meeting up with his friend, the Ithaca football captain, Dick Carmean, the two painted the jug blue, gold, red, and white in honor of both schools’ colors. The first Cortaca Jug recorded scores until the mid-1980s, necessitating a second jug that sported following decades’ scores. After 2015, Cortaca Jug II was also full, and Cortaca Jug III was introduced. There have been 16 pre-Cortaca Jug games and 60 Cortaca Jug contests. Ithaca leads the overall series 40–33–3, and the Cortaca Jug series 36–24. As with traditional Division III ri-
valries, attendance is generally good, often counting into the thousands. The New York City Chapter of the National Football Foundation, host of the 2019 Cortaca Jug game, has announced that ticket sales for this year’s game have set an alltime record for a Division III football game. With just over six weeks to go, sales have exceeded 39,000 tickets for the game. The previous record of 37,355 was set in 2017 for the “Johnnie–Tommie” game between two Minnesota universities (St. John’s vs. St. Thomas) held at Target Field in Minneapolis.
$2.00 jug started the tradition in 1959.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the National Football Foundation’s Mark Hudak and MetLife Stadium in support of holding the game in such a remarkable venue,” said Susan Bassett, an associate vice president and the director of intercollegiate athletics at Ithaca College. “To have the opportunity to compete on that field is something that I know our coaches and players will cherish for the rest of their lives.”
NO. 51 AND THE INSIDE STORY As Ithaca is looking to make it three in a row over Cortland on November 16, Ithaca’s leading tackler, linebacker, and co-
captain, Nick Garone ’20, will be directing the Bombers’ defense at MetLife Stadium wearing number 51. Number 51 is familiar to two previous Garones. Bombers Bob (’87) and Bobby (’15) wore the number when they played. All will be in attendance in a few weeks. This game will be the ninth straight Cortaca in which a Garone has participated as either a player or coach, beginning with Bobby’s freshman season in 2011. Eleven is the number of Cortaca games in which the Garones have participated to-date, posting a record of 6–5 as players, all while wearing the unofficial family number. That’s a lot of Cortaca history in one family, although the success has been a bit of a mixed bag. Bob was an All-American center whose teams went 39–7 in his four-year career, including winning all four Jug games during an extended period of Ithaca dominance. His oldest son, Bobby, was an all-conference center and long snapper from 2011 to 2014. Unfortunately, it was during a time when Cortland was hot, and took all four Jug matches during those years. Bobby’s brother, Nick, has helped restore the family’s winning ways. Last season, he registered seven tackles and a sack in Ithaca’s 24–21 victory. And while Nick will be the Garone patrolling the MetLife turf in November, it was dad (Bob) who has helped set the historic Jug game in motion, serving as a metropolitan New York

representative to the nonprofit National Football Foundation (NFF), which invited the two schools to play the game as part of a celebration of the 150th season of college football. Bob was a standout on the gridiron and graduated with a degree in exercise science. IC has always been a special part of his life. Although his wife, Lori, went to Cortland for three years (my goodness), the family blood runs Bombers blue. In fact, Lori’s younger brother, Jason Nichols, played for Ithaca, and developed into an All-American linebacker too. All three of Bob’s children became Bombers. His daughter, Carly ’16, was captain of IC’s volleyball team; number 51 wasn’t an option on the volleyball scorecard, so she wore number 15. Both Bobby and Nick say their dad didn’t push them to go to IC. But, Bobby noted, “I always had interest in Ithaca, between stories from my dad and my uncle playing there.” When the time came to pick a school, the choice came down to red (Cortland) or blue (Ithaca). Cortland offered him a chance only to walk on, so the decision was easy. “I told myself: I’m going to Ithaca, and I want to destroy Cortland when we play them,” he said. Alas, the football gods were not on Bobby’s side when it came to Cortaca games. Not only were his Ithaca teams winless against Cortland, one of those losses was perhaps the most painful one in Cortaca history. As the last seconds ticked
down in the 2014 game, Cortland hurriedly set up to attempt a game-tying field goal, but their holder was late getting on the field, then he fumbled the snap. Amidst the ensuing chaos, he recovered to find a receiver had slipped into the end zone and hit him with a game-winning touchdown pass. Just like that, a win became a loss — one that was replayed on ESPN’s SportsCenter several times. Bobby was standing on the sidelines at the time, and as the play unfolded he said he was so upset that he tried to run out on the field to stop it, but a coach grabbed him by the shoulder pads. When Cortland scored, he collapsed to the turf. “It was devastating to say the least,” he said. “I can still see it.” So can Nick, who was a spectator at that game. “It was like a nightmare,” he said. “I remember watching it unfold and saying, ‘How does this happen?’ Although Nick had heard about the Jug from listening to his father tell stories from his playing days, going to the games took it to another level. “Once I saw my first Cortaca, I realized how big it is and how crazy the rivalry really is,” he said. “I couldn’t even hear myself think.” An All-State player in his senior year at Eastport South Manor High School, Nick knew he was going to play football in college and was recruited by more than a dozen schools, including some in Division IAA and Division II. “It was a big decision, but I really focused on Ithaca,” he said. “My brother and father played here, my sister went here, and I’d been coming to games since 2011, so I felt comfortable there.”

A business major and first-team All-Conference honoree last year, Nick’s team has a 2–1 record in Cortaca games, and his family has been to all of them, which has been especially rewarding for his older brother. “One of my regrets is that we never beat Cortland, so it’s really been rewarding to see my brother beat them a few times,” Bobby said. For years, the Garones have had a built-in family reunion with Cortaca. This year the game is not far from Bob’s firm, Long Island-based Rosemar Contracting (where Bobby currently works). The gathering is going to be be huge. They expect dozens of extended family members to attend, as well as several dozen former IC teammates and high school friends. The family began planning the tailgate in the spring. As a player, Nick is thrilled. “I never thought I’d play in MetLife,” he said. “I don’t have words for it. It’s going to be crazy. Hopefully, we’ll bring the Jug home again this year.”

All Ithaca – Bobby, Nick, and Carly
Bobby shares his brother’s excitement, but he notes the game will also have a slightly somber tone. “It’s going to be bittersweet when Nick graduates,” he said. “Ithaca College football has been a big part of all our lives for the last eight or nine years.” Bob has also taken stock of the final chapter of the Garone family’s Cortaca book. “I’m very proud that my children went to Ithaca College and experienced what I did there,” he said. “And to watch my two boys play in Cortaca — a game I played in — that’s special to me.” At press time both teams are 6 and 0. JEAN SHAFIROFF NEW YORK’S FIRST LADY OF PHILANTHROPY AND STYLE ICON By Bennett Marcus Photography By Michael Paniccia
Through her innate generosity and concern for humanity, Jean Shafiroff found her life’s calling: philanthropy. For years she has been a powerful leader, putting her boundless energy behind worthy charitable organizations both local and international, and today is at the pinnacle of New York’s philanthropic circles. “I feel very lucky to be able to do the charity work that I do,” she says. “I think that it’s a great blessing to be in the position that I’m in. I’m very fortunate that I can help others.” Jean sits on the boards of multiple foundations, chairs numerous events, and donates to many causes with which she is not directly involved. “When it comes to giving, Jean Shafiroff leads the pack,” says Elsie McCabe Thompson, the president of the New York City Mission Society, an organization with which Shafiroff has long been actively involved. A humanitarian and author hailed as New York’s “First Lady of Philanthropy” by both Hello and Hola! magazines and several other publications, Jean is a fixture at charity galas in
both Manhattan and the Hamptons, where she has homes. A fashion lover known for her iconic sense of style, she often appears on best-dressed lists. Last year Look Online named her to its international best-dressed list; others on that list included Anna Wintour and Meghan Markle. “I was in good company!” Jean says with a laugh. Jean earned an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University, and worked in both public finance and private partnerships on Wall Street, and her business acumen is in high demand among charitable organizations. She also holds a BS in physical therapy from Columbia University. This summer, she chaired galas for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and the Ellen Hermanson Foundation. In August, Jean and her husband, Martin, were the honorees at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s 61st annual Summer Party, which she has chaired three times in past years. Jean has been instrumental in raising large sums of money for the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “Healthcare is very im-

portant, and supporting the local hospital is probably the most important thing to do in the Hamptons. It would be difficult to live in a community without a good hospital,” she says. Equally important for her is the fact that the hospital serves the entire community. “That fact is key. Just like any other community, we have people who are not wealthy. They need to have service, and I love that the hospital never turns anyone away. It’s a hospital for everyone.” Jean recently joined the board of the Southampton Hospital Association, her eighth board appointment. She serves on a wide variety of charity boards, including the New York City Mission Society, the French Heritage Society, The Jewish Board, and the Couture Council of the Museum at F.I.T. A prolific host, she entertains frequently in her homes. Recently she was listed by The Salonniere as one of 2019’s top 100 American party givers. Every weekend throughout the summer, her Southampton house is filled with guests. “A summer home is to be shared and enjoyed by loved ones and friends.” She also holds events at her homes for the causes she is passionate about. Among her soirées this year were ones for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the New York City Mission Society, and Surgeons of Hope. “I like people. I’m a people person,” she says, and she is happy to host party guests if they’re making the effort to learn about a charity. There is little rest for this dynamo, and in the early fall she chaired galas for the New York Women’s Foundation, Surgeons of Hope, and the Dominican Women’s Development Center. In November she will co-chair the French Heritage Society Gala.

Jean is a hard worker and states, “The philanthropy I do is definitely year-round.” At the Surgeons of Hope Gala, the actor Diego Luna and businessman Maurice Lévy of Publicis Groupe were honored. The organization’s mission of providing free heart surgery to children in developing countries is especially intriguing to Jean. “They do wonderful work, and save so many lives,” she says, adding that she visited their facility in Nicaragua when she was in that country in 2016. “The children never would have received their life-saving surgery if these top heart surgeons hadn’t traveled to the country.” Jean emphasized Surgeons of Hope in our discussion because she has become interested in global philanthropy. “I have traveled to many countries, including Cambodia, Nicaragua, Colombia, and China. In these and other countries I have seen enormous poverty and hardship. It is hard to view this and do nothing,” she explains. She has long supported organizations that provide assistance worldwide, including the Cherie Blair Foundation, which creates economic opportunities for women. “The Cherie Blair Foundation helps women around the world to get jobs, in places like India and elsewhere, and it’s growing rapidly. I’m very impressed.” Last December Jean traveled to London to support Walking with the Wounded, a charity that helps UK military veterans, and of which Prince Harry is a patron. “It was very exciting to meet Prince Harry. I think the royal family are great role models, and they do so much for people in the United Kingdom and internationally, and they really use that platform to do good.”
F E AT U R E S
Jean’s two daughters have followed in their mom’s footsteps. Her youngest daughter, an animal rights advocate and philanthropist, formed the charity Global Strays, which helps animal rescue groups in developing nations. “It’s a wonderful charity that is absolutely making a difference,” says Jean, who is on the board. Her older daughter serves on the board of the newly formed charity A Place to Bead Me. In her book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, Jean shares advice for anyone who wants to become involved in philanthropy regardless of financial status. “I believe we can all be philanthropists. Those who have very few financial resources can give time and knowledge.” Those who do have resources, Jean feels, have an obligation to help the underserved. “To do nothing is to waste a lifetime.” Another book is in the works. “Writing a book requires a great deal of research, time to formulate ideas, and then time to write. It is not a simple process to write; however, I am glad that I wrote my first book.” The press plays an important role in spreading news about philanthropy and the people involved in it, Jean believes. “I think it encourages other people,” she notes. She has gotten involved with certain causes by reading about them, including, years ago, about the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Now, she has embraced social media as a way to get her message out, particularly Instagram, where she has over 210,000 followers. “I think that it’s a wonderful platform to promote philanthropy and also to encourage people.” About a year ago, she got serious about it and hired a consultant to help her manage her online presence.
She also uses the platform to promote her interest in fashion, which helps to make her posts fun and eye-catching. “I am on the Couture Council board and try to help promote the work of our designers, particularly some younger, lesserknown designers. You will often see Jean wearing Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera, Victor dE Souza, Malan Breton, and B Michael, among others. Jean collects high fashion ball gowns that she hopes to donate to a museum — someday, as she still very much enjoys the experience of wearing these creations. She is currently in the process of archiving her gown collection with a company called Clio Archivists, the brainchild of two fashion industry insiders, one from Vogue and one who teaches fashion history at F.I.T. What drives her? “I live a good life and have been fortunate to have resources available to me. I believe we are not put on this earth to work with the intention of only giving to ourselves. When we share our resources, we come closer to understanding the meaning of life. With this in mind I remain committed and motivated to move forward with my work in philanthropy.” Follow Jean on Instagram @JeanShafiroff Facebook @JeanShafiroff Twitter @JeanShafiroff Photography: Michael Paniccia Hair: Henry de la Paz, creative director for Warren Tricomi Make-up: JP Ramirez for Angelo David

STEM-CELL DONORS MEET THEIR TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS A California leukemia survivor recently met her life-saving blood stem-cell donor from New York for the very first time at Gift of Life Marrow Registry’s One Huge Night Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street. Alison Roberts, 69, of San Rafael, California, was undergoing treatment for adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) until receiving her transplant last year from Lauren Gaines, 28, of New York City. The Manhattan event planner joined Gift of Life’s registry in 2011 while attending Tulane University. “I’m happy to be able to participate and help someone and their family in such a meaningful way,” Gaines said after embracing Roberts. “This process has allowed me to appreciate the life I have and everyone that’s a part of it.” Gift of Life Marrow Registry also introduced a second donor-recipient pair at the gala. Marcus Haggins, 9, of Philadelphia, who was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, met his life-saving stem-cell donor, Gregory Mitchell, 30, a Baltimore financial advisor. Mitchell joined Gift of Life’s registry during a 2012 donor recruitment drive in Atlantic City. Since its start in 1991, Gift of Life Marrow Registry has grown to more than 347,000 individuals who have volunteered to donate blood stem-cells or bone marrow to save a life. To date, Gift of Life has facilitated over 16,600 matches for those with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell, and nearly 100 other diseases, resulting in more than 3,475 transplants. RACHEL’S RADAR ST. BARTH By Rachel Heller
T
here’s a reason why celebrities, models and It girls consistently escape to the tropical island of St. Barth. It has the sophistication of St.-Tropez with the laissez-fare Caribbean laid-back lifestyle — which means it’s exclusive and high end yet totally unpretentious. You can go to the beach and then straight to a beach club in sunglasses and a wrap. The capital, Gustavia, encircles a yacht-filled harbor, where you might see a private helicopter landing on one of the many yachts in sight. Luxury retailers like Hermès, Bulgari, and Cartier are here too. You can also enjoy fabulous creperies. The first time I went to the island I was in shock. It is breathtaking and has such a vibe. The beaches are picturesque. There are 16 and each has a distinct personality. At Saline Beach you’ll find topless women frolicking in the translucent water and yards of soft, white sand that feels like powdered sugar between your toes. What you won’t find: tourist traps hawking sugary cocktails. Saline, like most other beaches on St. Barth, is rather bare bones — no bars, no shops, no restaurants — so be sure to pack your own water and food/snacks.
If you go to St. Barth and don’t experience Le Ti St-Barth, you’re doing it totally wrong. The most memorable night for me was dressing up and dancing at this great late-night spot. Waiters whisk you into a secret room in the back of the restaurant, dress you up like you’re going to an exotic party, and send you off to the main room totally transformed. If I were to recommend a lodging, I would say stay in a villa. The Eden Rock was damaged during the storm, but honestly the best place to stay in St. Barth is close to the port. You want to be in the action and rhythm of the village and experience its energy. St. Barth has events all year long. Many French holidays and a handful of Swedish ones are celebrated locally; larger international events include annual music festivals in January and August, and the Caribbean Film Festival in April. St. Barth residents have an avid passion for volleyball, and the Volleyball Cup Tournament in July draws big crowds. Instagram: @rachelhellerxo Social Life

NEST SEEKERS INTERNATIONAL’S MIKE FULFREE FROM MODEL TO POWER BROKER By Blaire Bass “It’s all about building relationships and maintaining these relationships at the highest level. I measure my success by the level of customer satisfaction and service I deliver in each and every transaction,” says Mike Fulfree, dubbed “Mr. Southampton” on the real estate circuit Out East. A Nest Seekers sales star, Mike believes that selling someone a home in the Hamptons is helping them invest in their future. Whether it’s for a first-time home buyer, someone looking for that perfect vacation home on the beach, or simply for investment, it can all be found right here in the Hamptons. The clientele in the Hamptons is so diverse,” says Mike of his clients and customers. “I have worked with people from all over the world. Many of whom call a piece of the Hamptons home. It’s a challenge, but this is one of the best real estate markets in the world. It’s so gratifying when I am able to bring a buyer and seller together.” Prior to launching his Hamptons real estate sales career, Mike enjoyed a hugely successful international career modeling for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Diesel Jeans, Frankie Morello, and Alexander McQueen. He was named Model of the Year in 2008 and worked with the likes of the photographer Bruce Weber for Vogue, the iconic beauty Brooke Shields, and the Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel. He attended Fashion Week around the world and lived in Italy from 2009 to 2012. While visiting the Hamptons with his family, he fell in love with the culture, the spectacular beaches (especially off Dune Road) and the adventurous nature of the outdoor lifestyle one can enjoy Out East. “Deep-sea fishing on the ocean after heading out of Star Island Marina in Montauk over the summer is one of my passions. Taking time with family and friends is most important. There’s nothing better!” A connection to the community drives Mike’s charitable efforts. He is associated with the Wounded Warrior 32-mile race; he cycled the TD 5 Borough race raising funds and awareness for the Lupus Foundation of America; and he’s raised money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Mike’s tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit drive him to search for listings daily for his buyers, renters, and sellers. Making those connections successful for both sides of the deal is what Mike says, “makes all the effort worthwhile.” Nest Seekers International Michael Fulfree Licensed Real Estate Salesperson 20 Main Street, Southampton michaelfulfree@nestseekers.com o/ 631.287.9260 | c/ 631.560.4030 SocialLifeMagazine.com

rom Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island, Gary DePersia has participated in nearly $3 billion of real estate transactions since 1995. With hundreds of his exclusive listings sold and closed, as well as matching hundreds of his own buyers and renters with the right properties, Gary’s nearly 25 years in Hamptons luxury real estate has generated benchmark sales. You may have heard people refer to him in real estate circles as the “go-to man.” A year-on-year member of The Corcoran Group President’s Council, he qualified as a national standout in 2008 when he was ranked as the nation’s 4th top broker. And just this spring, the Real Deal recognized him as the 3rd ranked broker in the Hamptons with $83M+ in residential sales of $10M+ properties. Gary realized early on the importance of deep local knowledge and the benefits of expert marketing, which other brokers have come to emulate. Knowing each buyer or renter has a personal idea of what defines the best Hamptons experience, Gary is well versed on the inventory of each village and hamlet on the East End.

elling 15 to 20 properties every year — even in last year’s challenging environment — Dawn and Frank Bodenchak are among the busiest brokers in the Hamptons! “We try to create value for clients,” said Frank. And they have. The Bodenchaks have sold over 40 pieces of land or tear-down houses over the past few years — many under the radar — and have helped developers, builders, and end-users turn $1M to $7M parcels into $5M to $20M special properties, often achieving record prices on resale. “Most recently, we helped contribute to the land development and design inspiration for this year’s “Holiday House,” a spectacular designer showhouse at 90 Wild Goose Lane in Water Mill South. It was designed by the architect James Edward Theiss and built by the extremely talented Michael Cerbone. It’s listed by Sothebys International Realty for $10.9 million,” said Frank. EVENTS LIKE NO OTHER WITH 4PM EVENTS WANT TO WOW YOUR GUESTS? MEET TATIANA By Cecilia Bloom
I
t’s 4PM. Do you know where your event planner is? If it’s Tatiana Byron Marx, then she is wherever you are anywhere over the globe, making sure your event is like no other. Tatiana’s roster of clients includes some of the biggest blockbuster names. Known as the “arbiter of great style and entrepreneurial prowess,” Tatiana takes Lionel Richie and Tatiana Byron Marx event planning to the highest level in creativity and quality, with a major splash of “wow” factor. Social Life sat down with Tatiana to discover her secrets to success. What was your big break into the world of celebrity events? I was hired to do a series of events for Roc-A-Fella Records at the Cannes Film Festival. For two weeks, I produced multiple events for Damon Dash and Jay-Z that were co-hosted by celebrities like Penelope Cruz and Leonardo DiCaprio. Those high-profile parties introduced me and 4PM Events to some of the biggest names in the industry and helped legitimize my fledgling brand. What would you say was the most out-of-the-box event you’ve planned? The most incredible event was a dinner party at Versailles. We transported our guests back to the 17th century at the height of Louis XIV’s extravagance, influence, and power. If you’re going to
go big, Versailles is your place! Guests arrived by horse and carriage and were greeted at the entrance of the palace by acrobats, fire eaters, and a slew of circus performers. After cocktails in Versailles’ remarkable gardens, we escorted our guests into the Hall of Mirrors, where we had designed and built a 220-foot long rectangular table. If you stood at the head of the table, it looked endless! We hired actors and musicians to wear period costumes and created parties within a party throughout the course of the evening, which ended with breathtaking fireworks . . . and a ton of clean-up. What is the most interesting wedding fantasy you’ve made come alive? A few years ago, we worked with clients who did a three-day buyout of Amanyara Resort in Turks & Caicos. The bride envisioned being married atop the pool overlooking the ocean. We designed and built a translucent structure over the infinity pool to support the canopy and act as an aisle for the bride, groom, and officiant. Framed by the sunset’s reflection on the ocean, the bride and groom looked like they were gliding on water as they walked to the altar. When the guests went inside for cocktails, we transitioned the space into a DJ booth and dance floor. Can you share your number one tip or tool for party planning? Lighting, lighting, and lighting. People underestimate its huge effect on the overall look and feel of a party. 4PM Events 4PMevents.com Social Life

ON ‘LOCATION’ WITH LESSING’S HOSPITALITY GROUP By Jacob Puck
R
egardless of whom you ask, the most important forward-thinking aspect of any good event — and especially a wedding — is the location. “Of course, no detail is trivial when you are planning an event to have maximum impact,” says Jennifer Cantin, Lessing’s Hospitality Group’s director of marketing and development. “However, the first and last impression — and everything in between — will be informed by the environment you choose.” Cantin should know. Lessing’s is a sixth-generation, family-owned company that now boasts 120 locations from Montauk to Manhattan, up to Westchester, and down to Florida; wedding and catering venues; 10 full-service restaurants; over 80 corporate and academic dining centers; nine Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza franchises; and a historic inn. “The only thing we don’t have at this point is a barn,” jokes Cantin, with the caveat that she is sure that one is on the horizon. With so many options to choose from, Social Life Magazine challenged Cantin to name her top five favorite fête locales.
1. Whitby Castle, Rye Set on 126 acres, Whitby Castle is conveniently located, yet seemingly worlds away. Perfectly manicured lawns, breathtaking views of the Long Island Sound, a grand ballroom, and two private reception rooms offer the perfect backdrop for any size affair. “There are a lot of brides who really want to have the perfect princess wedding, and this is the perfect locale,” says Cantin. “Just pulling up to a castle, regardless of the event, is a wow moment.”
2. Bourne Mansion, Oakdale This historic turn-of-the-century Vanderbilt mansion offers a traditional and classic setting for the grandest black-tie affairs, from lawn events hosting over 1,000 guests to weddings and corporate affairs hosting 300 guests. Bourne Mansion personifies luxury and grandeur and the elaborate celebrations of yesteryear. “The Bourne Mansion epitomizes the Gilded Age with décor inspired by its founder, Consuelo Vanderbilt,” says Cantin. “It’s also conveniently located, only 90 minutes from New York City — so close yet worlds away.”
3. The Vineyards at Aquebogue, Aquebogue Nestled on the North Fork, The Vineyards at Aquebogue is a captivating setting at any time of year, and for any occasion. “People are discovering the North Fork, and this has become one of the most sought-after venues on all of Long Island,” says

Pelican Club
Cantin. “There is absolutely nothing like hosting an event at a working vineyard, and this one has been completely renovated, while still retaining every bit of rustic charm. It’s true magic.”
4. Pelican Club, Jupiter, Florida Lessing’s newest property, the Pelican Club, takes center stage at its stunning waterfront location. Guests are instantly immersed in the warmth and charm of this classic Floridian venue that features spectacular dockside vistas. “Overlooking the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, there isn’t a prettier property that I’ve seen in Florida,” says Cantin. “Its Bahamian accents are unmistakable, so this huge, event-driven location is unrivaled.”
5. Heritage Club at Bethpage The Heritage Club stands as one of the most celebrated event venues in New York State. Elegance and opulence imbue the incredible ballroom, while award-winning cuisine and remarkable service are the gold standards for this historic and famous Long Island destination. “It’s really hard to beat this location,” says Cantin, adding that the recent PGA Championship really put the property on the map. “Regardless of the event, the Heritage Club is the epitome of wow.” Lessing’s Hospitality Group lessings.com Social Life

FOUR SEASONS O‘AHU AT KO OLINA By Anthony Michael

henever a couple decides to get married, one of their first decisions is where the wedding and reception will take place. The second is where to go on their honeymoon. A destination wedding can narrow decisions to one. Hawaii has long been a luxury destination for discerning couples. Thanks to its fabulous weather, incredible beauty, abundance of private and glamorous locations, and a lack of red tape (this is our 50th state). Hawaii has it all. Hawaii has eight main islands, but Oahu offers the most variety of activities and exclusive lodging. From traditional luaus on the beach to daytrips awash in color, you won’t want for anything when choosing Oahu, the most famed island of all. Whether you’re planning a destination wedding or seeking the perfect getaway after a wedding back home, the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is a perfect choice. A personal sanctuary with chic, light-filled interiors and breathtaking views, the property is renowned for its luxury rooms, five sumptuous restaurants, and
exclusive meeting spaces, including a lovely on-site wedding chapel to exchange vows. Perched on Oahu’s rugged western coast, the spectacular beachfront resort offers vast ocean views of turquoise waters, private white sand beaches, lively pools and lagoons, and a golf course that weaves around waterfalls at Ko Olina Golf Club. Consider a Specialty Suite, a choice that includes an assortment of luxury perks and services. A dedicated concierge will help you create an incredible island escape, arrange for in-suite dining (compliments of the resort), and favor you with exclusive personalized service. This option can take frustrating planning and decision-making out of the equation. In the early evening, make your way to the adult pool, perfect for taking in the famously colorful sunsets on the leeward coast of the island. You can also request a private barbecue dinner overlooking the ocean. From Champagne to fireworks, practically no request is off limits. Social Life

Nights are special at the resort. The property recently unveiled an immersive Spa Under the Stars experience offered at the resort’s world-class Naupaka Spa & Wellness Centre. Spa Under the Stars begins with a warm aloha greeting from a personal spa attendant, followed by any combination of whirlpool, steam room, sauna, and the resort’s fifth floor rooftop lap pool. Once fully relaxed, the journey continues as guests are escorted to one of the resort’s oceanfront spa suites, which is transformed into an intimate candle-lit sanctuary. Surrounded by the swaying palms, warm trade winds, and the sound of waves lapping against the sand, couples enjoy side-by-side lomi lomi massages for a truly transcendent experience. Following treatments, guests are treated with Champagne and joined on the resort’s Ocean Lawn by Greg McCartney, a NASA ambassador and professional astronomer who guides guests through the beauty and mystery of the stars in the Polynesian night sky. Our advice? As incredible as the Four Seasons Ko Olina may be, this is Hawaii! Get out and experience it. Nearby is Kualoa Ranch, SocialLifeMagazine.com
the filming location for movies, including Jurassic Park and Godzilla, and home to an array of activities for people of all adventure levels. Go horseback riding along scenic pathways that overlook Mokoli‘i Island. Hike, mountain bike, or drive an ATV through jungle terrain. Or let loose on a ziplining tour, which begins at the top of Ka‘a‘awa Valley. Or, take to the skies. For the ultimate Oahu sightseeing experience, opt for a helicopter tour that flies past the island’s many must-see attractions, including Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Kaneohe Bay, with a tour of the Kualoa Ranch on the north shore. Paradise Helicopters can customize your trip to enjoy every moment in the air. Pro tip: The Four Seasons Ko Olina offers brides “something borrowed,” a Ni‘ihau shell heirloom lei. It’s a 12-strand, 50-inch lei of white Laiki Ke‘oke‘o shells, which are equal in value to an exquisite diamond. This lei, which can be rented, duplicates what was worn by Hawaiian ali‘i, or royalty, on their wedding day. Ni‘ihau shells are the world’s most prized shells, found solely on the private Hawaiian Island of Ni‘ihau, which is also the only island in the world where the Hawaiian language is solely spoken. Yes, think Academy Awards and Harry Winston. But, then again, the entire trip is designed to make you feel like royalty. O‘AHU AT KO OLINA fourseasons.com/oahu

One of my favorites? Butternut Squash! This gorgeous vegetable just screams autumn and, besides looking great, it’s deliciously versatile with health benefits to boot. Whether whipped into creamy soups, a staple of savory sides, roasted and tossed into salads or bowls, stuffed with a plethora of other delicious ingredients, and even used as a pizza topper, butternut squash brings new dimension to lots of fall recipes. Why? It’s delectably silky, with a mildly sweet flavor and works with just about everything. Speaking of sweet, it also can be the anchor of an unforgettable dessert. all in New York. It’s perfect. Amber leaves, hunter green sweaters, long brunches, and the telltale back-to-school invigorating crisp in the air. Winter is coming . . . but who cares? It’s simply glorious — just sit and savor the moment. Naturally, nothing completes our ideal setting more than fall cocktails! Let’s get started, shall we? As the uncontested spot for premier people-watching in the city, Nello’s also still reigns supreme in Manhattan pasta. (With truffles if you want to take out a loan.) And ambiance: along with the (relatively) new Baccarat accents, Marcia Makkos — the wife of owner Thomas Makkos — has turned the legendary Manhattan eatery into a gallery of some of the most majestic Halloween/Carnivale/ Venetian masks ever spotted in the neighborhood, ones she has designed and created herself. We thought the lounging supersized red Valentine’s Day bears sporting Burberry scarves could not be topped. Alas, we were wrong. Worth checking out for sure. While consuming the irresistible culinary decadence, don’t miss the Nello’s Fall Sour — a warming yet tart cooler weather Dionysian confection:
Nello’s Fall Sour
2 oz Bourbon 1 oz fresh lime juice 1 egg white 1 teaspoon brown sugar (It’s their secret. Wait . . . did I say that out loud?) Directions are complicated: Mix all, garnish with cherry and sliced orange. Oh — and drink! Next, after a long walk in Central Park admiring the foliage and a quick stop at the Frick, we are ready for something warm. With fries. And maybe some spinach avocado salad for health. (Or not.) Either way, head on over to Brasserie Cognac East, sit at it’s SocialLifeMagazine.com

famously friendly bar and order the Fire & Spice (Which is — literally — fire and spice. It’s simply delightful with an unforgettable presentation. Just keep all flammable objects at least 20 feet away.)
Cognac Fire & Spice:
2 oz VSOP ½ oz Lillet Rouge ½ oz maple syrup 1 /5 oz Absinthe Superior Mix all ingredients except the absinthe well. Here comes the fun part: In a separate glass, light the absinthe on fire. Pour lit absinthe over cocktail. Watch cool effects for two to three seconds, then put out flame with an inverted glass. Party trick? Perhaps, but it’s the very definition of awesome chic. And delicious to boot. A quick stop at the gym before dinner? Maybe — or maybe a movie with reclining seats for a power nap instead. Either way, wrap your evening at Felice 64. With its candlelit atmosphere and open, relaxed vibe, it’s the perfect Last Stop of the Day. And most creative, supremely tasty fall libation:

Roza, a former successful model and a current cultural ambassador, studied luxury brand management at the prestigious Istituto Marangoni. She has consulted for Cartier, Chopard, Rolls Royce, Damiani, Pasquale Bruni, and Balmain to name but a few. She has also been a columnist and contributor to prestigious publications like Tatler, Vanity Fair, and GQ. Another project in the works is Fashion, Success, and Celebs, a show that will take viewers on a journey to the most exquisite and prestigious designer brands in the world and speak to the celebrities who wear their collections. Under the auspices of the United Nations, she is organizing a sustainable fashion and jewelry exhibition, which will travel the world. Roza supports established and emerging designers who embrace sustainable eco-ethical values in their fashion practices. She uses her influential network to help these designers break into the increasingly challenging fashion industry. In addition, Roza’s philanthropy has included fundraising for various charitable organizations.

WHY ARE YOU OUT AT A MADONNA CONCERT? SHOULDN’T YOU BE HOME WITH YOUR THREE KIDS LOL? By lyss stern Ceo oF diVamoms.Com and Best sellinG author oF MOTHERHOOD IS A B#TCH

he comment was posted about a video I had just put up on my social media of me with my friends at the Madame X Tour at BAM. I read it over several times; I didn’t lol. In fact, I was irritated (hence the reason for writing this essay). Since when do other moms have the right to judge me for needing a little time off ? Yes, I have three kids. Does that mean I’m chained to my children and not allowed to enjoy myself ever? I shook my head in disbelief: In this day and age of female empowerment, are we really mom shaming each other? Motherhood is tough — really tough. I even wrote a book about it called Motherhood Is a B#tch (am now working on the TV show) and know how much we women endure daily. The last thing any of us need is to feel that our fellow parents are perusing our Facebooks and Instagrams in search of something to criticize. I take pride in the fact that my life is a pretty open book: I’m not going to sugarcoat the fact that I need a glass of wine now and then (okay, maybe more now than then) to help me handle the stress of my day-to-day mom duties (try juggling ballet, baseball practice, and the school play, why don’t ya). Sometimes I sneak away to a midday matinee or pretend I have a PTA meeting when I’m really just reading a book in Starbucks. I should not SocialLifeMagazine.com
feel guilty for any of it, especially not for planning a girls’ night out and leaving the hubby home to referee. Yet I find that friends as well as strangers love to weigh in with unsolicited commentary. When my daughter was crying once in a supermarket checkout line, I started singing loudly to distract her. Apparently my slightly off-key rendition of Jojo Siwa’s greatest hits was more offensive to the woman behind us than my toddler having a meltdown. “Really?” she sniffed. “Really!” I shot back. Then I found myself explaining, apologizing, defending myself: “It’s past her nap time . . . she hates waiting in lines . . . that last lollipop put her over the edge. . . .” But do I need to justify my actions or reactions? The fact is, I’m doing the best I can — we all are — every single day, and I’m not perfect (I despise the word “perfect”). Far from it! I screw up big time and often, and I own that fact. Sometimes I order in pizza or Chinese when I’m too tired to make dinner and let my kids stay up past their bedtimes to watch Saturday Night Live. Sue me. That shouldn’t make me a target for bullies bent on out-moming each other. Like all bullying, I understand it’s not about me, it’s about them: the need to camouflage jealousy or insecurities in a shower of snarky remarks. I’m thrilled that your little Lexia knows how to count to 100 and can read the Wall Street Journal (the insinuation being that my kid doing anything less proves I’ve failed miserably as a mother). As moms we are constantly questioning if we’re doing the right or wrong thing. There are so many books, websites, talk shows telling us how to go about our business, it becomes completely overwhelming at times. That’s when you have to take a deep breath and say, “My kids, my rules.” That goes for my Madonna excursion as well. I’m not going to beg forgiveness for having a good time. The more relaxed and happy I am, the better mom I can be to my children. I’m also setting a good example for my daughter: Moms can work and play and have a life, don’t you forget it. As I watched The Material Mom strutting around on stage, the epitome of power and sex appeal, I’ll admit I was a bit envious: I wish I could have her confidence and ability to not care what other people think. The point is, I’m a good mom — no, a great mom — and I know it, despite anyone who has something to say or post to the contrary. Maybe it’s time we stopped shaming and started supporting each other. Sure (to quote one of my fave Madonna tunes) feel free to “Express Yourself ” — but think first about what it’s like to be in that mom’s shoes and cut her some much-deserved slack.
