PUBLISHER’S LETTER

August is a great time to be in the Hamptons. Summer is at its peak and the time is perfect to relax at the beach, or spend a day by the pool. I suggest unplugging from the digital world and let your real life unfold instead of spending your time on social media. Wellness seems to be on everybody’s mind nowadays. Biking, yoga and getting exercise is at the forefront of my mind on the weekend. Spending time in the Hamptons and getting fit will make everything feel better. With many wellness spots scattered all over the Hamptons, it’s easy to find the perfect place to work out, meditate, cycle, or take a yoga class. As the summer continues, please support the Southampton Hospital. You can contribute at southamptonhospital.org Summer is going by quickly, and it’s time to spend some long weekends in the Hamptons. Enjoy August!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

As the season began, it almost didn’t seem like summer at all, but now it feels more like it used to. August in the Hamptons is something to be so grateful for. We are lucky that this month is still a multicolored sunset, lobster rolls by the pool, a perfect bike ride through Sag Harbor . . . . none of these things are out of our reach. Our freedom to enjoy the Hamptons is truly a gift. As the months have rolled by and we have all made adjustments to the new normal and hit our stride, now is the time to relish the quiet beauty of the East End and contemplate our role here. There are so many charities and ways to give back. There are many meaningful ways to move through these days. There also seems to be hope filtering in through the cracks of all that we’ve witnessed since this momentous shift. Most are now wearing masks, more and more individuals continue to come together to help each other, and the hope of a vaccine lingers on the notso-distant horizon. I know there is still a lot that is grim and things that take us aback. Although I believe in a positive attitude, I also believe that you can’t be blinded by only focusing on the good. There is a lot that we still need to work on as a society, but I do feel we are heading in the right direction. Wishing all of you a very blessed August. With love,

Devorah Rose

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

Summer is in full swing on the East End, and one business thriving this season is the Hampton’s luxury real estate market. As New York City residents departed to their beach homes during the Covid-19 lockdown, many homeowners decided to make the Hamptons their primary residence for year round living. The increased demand in houses for rent and sale ignited bidding wars on coveted properties resulting in a real estate price surge reaching all-time highs, breaking records. Undoubtedly, the Hamptons are known for being a seasonal retreat for residents of the New York metropolitan area and one of the best summer getaway destinations in the world. Now, in the privacy of their own homes, people can work remotely, students can learn virtually, and families can enjoy more time together and outdoors, which has transitioned the East End from solely a summertime hotspot, to potentially a homeowners’ primary residence for year round living. The remarkable real estate options for discerning buyers span from oceanfront estates with resort-style features to private picturesque enclaves on sprawling fields. Private residences on the East End are now increasingly sought after causing a declining inventory. Many of these spectacular homes are custom designed and offer luxury features such as tennis courts, pools, in-home gyms and private docks, all perfect for stay-at-home restrictions. With endless activities available-boating, swimming, golfing, shopping, and entertainment, I couldn’t think of a better place than the Hamptons to call home. Enjoy your summer and continue to stay safe!

The hottest month of the year is here, and between the sun, sand, and chlorine, August can take a toll on your hair! I spoke with Marcus Hoey, hair guru and Glamsquad regional hair expert on how to protect your hair from the sun, heat, and humidity…

Glamsquad Beachy Wave spray, glamsquad.com, $26

Marcus Hoey

What are your top tips for summer haircare? Always use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. I also highly recommend a UV-protective beach spray. My go-to is the Beachy Wave spray by Glamsquad (glamsquad.com, $26). It does wonders to give hair the natural texture you get from humidity, but with hold. It also protects your color from UV and UB rays and keeps hair hydrated with coconut water.

How can we protect our hair from the summer elements? Use a leave-in conditioner. I love the GSQ by Glamsquad heat protectant (cvs.com, $8) with macadamia butter to hydrate and protect hair from hot tools and the harsh effects of the elements. Can wetting your hair with water before you go swimming help to protect it? Yes, it does help because it’s a first line

Jennifer Behr Juliette bobby pins in champagne, jenniferbehr.com, $225 of defense before your hair hits chlorinated water. The best way to protect hair from chlorine is to apply a little coconut oil to your strands before going in the pool. Do you recommend applying hair masks in the summer? Yes, absolutely! Anything to help hydrate hair in summer months will help. I love the Glamsquad’s Re-Treat (pictured on the left page) because it hydrates and nourishes hair with mango butter and watermelon fruit extract. How can women protect colored hair throughout the summer? • Use a color-treated shampoo and conditioner. • Keep hair out of chlorine as much as possible, and when you do take a dip in the pool, make sure to rinse right after you get out. • Always wash hair with cool water as opposed to warm.

earing hair out over botched home cuts and dye jobs? Dreaming about the day when you can go back to the salon? Worry no more. My Darling Ivy, the hotter-than-tongs Chelsea salon owned by Manny Rolon, Mark Bustos, and VJ Moscaritola is again open for business. “The days of talking to yourself in the mirror as if you were your own client, while you attempt to color or cut your hair are safely coming to an end,” says VJ. “Women are thirsting for a return to glamour,” explains Manny, New York City’s stylist par excellence, “but after months of being cooped up inside, they’re seeking a new elegance — unstudied and unfussy, but always effortlessly chic.” Of course, a lot of effort goes into looking effortless. Whether it’s correcting the self-inflicted wounds of quarantine or adding life and luster to dull hair, landing on a new everyday look, or choosing a style for a special event, Manny and his team go over every detail. According to Manny, having been caught off-guard these past few months, his clients not only want to look great but also want to be better informed. Which is just as well because Manny, who hails from three generations of hairdressers, and is an educator for the revered Oribe brand, is a font of hair knowledge. As is his team of star stylists. And it’s not just the women who are treading a path to My Darling Ivy, and evolving. “Male clients have learned to deal with the awkward grown-out phase through the stay-at-home months,” says Mark. “And sometimes a good reshaping is all it takes to convince them that they can pull off more than one look.” Although the layout and design of My Darling Ivy already had allowed for over six feet of separation between styling chairs, in

an effort to further adhere to social distancing measures, the salon will be expanding its business hours to allow for a lower occupancy level throughout each day. “More than ever, we as hairdressers and salon owners realize how important our roles are in people’s lives,” says Mark. “We are going above and beyond to keep everyone comfortable, safe, healthy, and feeling more beautiful again.” In addition to My Darling Ivy, the trio owns Silver Vine Room in Summit, New Jersey. About these two salons, VJ says, “We think it’s key to spend extra time with guests, not only focusing on their look but also conversing and sharing stories and experiences about these unprecedented times. This has been a time of much solitude, and having the time to sit and catch up is as important as hair care itself!” My Darling Ivy 444 West 17th Street mydarlingivy.com 646.838.9313 Social Life

HOW TO AVOID OVEREATING WHILE WORKING AT HOME By Kristy Rao

H

ave you been finding yourself in your pantry more often than you would like to admit? Do you have an outof-control feeling when it comes to regulating the frequency and amount of food that you consume when working from home? If so, you are not alone! In the last month of social distancing, many of my clients have told me they are experiencing cravings and finding it hard to not over-indulge. The most common triggers for this are boredom, stress, uncertainty, and an accessible pantry. Here is some advice on regulating your food intake in the time of Covid-19. Keep processed foods out of your house. If you feel the need to stock up on treats for your kids, store them in the basement or the garage where they are not in regular sight. This works especially well if you have a second refrigerator in the basement. Often, out of sight is out of mind. Stock up on whole foods. Remember that an excess intake of refined carbohydrates and added sugars may suppress your immune system. Making vegetables easier to snack on than processed snacks will help you increase your intake of vegetables when hunger strikes. Pre-chop vegetables like bell peppers, celery, and broccoli and keep them in the refrigerator with hummus or guacamole for an easy grab. Consider time-restricted eating. This means restricting your eating window to 8 or 10 hours. For example, consume food between 10 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and then abstain from eating again until 10 a.m. the next day. For some, waiting a few hours after waking up to eat your first meal can significantly help to reduce cravings throughout the rest of the day. As an added bonus, restricting an eating window has been associated with a slew of health benefits like anti-aging, weight loss, reduced inflammation, improved insulin resistance, and more. Drink herbal teas and plenty of water. Hydration is incredibly important for regulating your food intake. It also helps deliver oxygen to your cells, enhances energy, and promotes bowel regularity. The body has a hard time distinguishing between whether you are hungry or thirsty, so be sure to drink throughout the day. If you are bored but not hungry, opt for making an herbal tea or drinking some water. I’ve been drinking Kevita’s watermelon rose kombucha, fruit-infused water, and peppermint tea on the regular. It definitely prevents me from snacking. Avoid eating anything that is not in a bowl or on a plate. When you’re at home, it’s easy to stop by the pantry on the way

Kristy Rao, Photo by Frank Rocco

to the bathroom and eat a handful of pretzels. This would be absolutely fine if the process did not repeat itself six times in one day, which is more likely the case. When you avoid eating any food not served in a bowl or on a plate, you prevent mindless food consumption. This also makes it easier to exercise portion control. Avoid stress eating. Instead, take a half hour walk, call a friend, or meditate before indulging in something you might ultimately regret eating. Become more aware of your feelings, and let yourself feel them without eating. Food can be a source of comfort, but your health and your relationships will be better off if you reach for the phone rather than for a cookie the next time you’re looking for comfort. LIVE AND HEAL HEALTH AND LIFE COACHING By L. A. Dawson

n the seventh anniversary of my having neurological paralysis from Lyme disease and suffering a devastating treadmill injury, I wondered if I would ever work again. Although many problems had been solved, some complications and symptoms persisted. I exceeded milestones I had set for myself, but as an author, sitting was my daily necessity. Yet sitting was a painful reminder of all that had happened and the things I couldn’t do anymore. Thankfully, I now have tools to make sure muscles are firing and it’s now possible for me to sit for hours while I write. Focusing on what I had accomplished, and not what was still ahead of me, I decided to give back and help others on their own journeys to better health. In April 2019, I enrolled in a health- and life-coaching school. My launching of Live and Heal Health and Life Coaching is a natural progression of writing health and wellness articles and finishing the final leg of my own healing journey. My niches include Lyme disease, weight loss, digestion, PTSD, and trauma. Personally, I used holistic modalities to regain my strength and offer this in my coaching practice as well. I teach holistic modalities to clients and also speak at events of like-minded health-conscious people. One of the most important concepts is learning to re-frame our lives with positive thoughts and words. Claiming your illness or weakness or problem attracts negative energy to an already compromised body. Using grounding and visualization are wonderful tools for meeting life’s challenges calmly. Putting our feet on the ground (grass or sand) can realign our body’s energy in a positive way. Visualizing our healing in a positive light changes the landscape of how we feel and how fast we heal. I offer cleanses and guide my clients in their renewed gut health. The focus is on anti-inflammatory protocols with discussion about the effect of lectins in our diet and food sensitivities. I also share healing recipes and give help with food prep and shopping. Reading labels is imperative so that we can count chemicals not calories. Certain chemicals have a negative effect on our bodies. I also do ninety-day coaching programs and six-month programs for total transformation. All programs meet the client where they

nna Avaliani, MD, one of the best physician artists on Park Avenue, specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures. Celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, and entertainment as well as corporate executives come to Dr. Avaliani for her exceptional experience, artistry, and attention to detail. These attributes combined with her warm and caring personality have brought many referrals to her growing practice. Her state-of-the-art laser center was honored with the prestigious Cynosure Center of Excellence Award. She was also named a RealSelf Top Doctor, an award given for her contribution to medicine and patient education. Dr. Avaliani is a true laser expert, offering the latest technology available on the market to treat virtually all skin concerns. One of her absolute favorite treatments is the revolutionary skin-rejuvenation treatment PicoSure Focus. It’s fast, effective, and treats many skin concerns, hence it’s the gold standard treatment for skin rejuvenation. PicoSure treats dark spots, sun spots, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, surgical scars, stretch marks, and more — in less than 15 minutes and with virtually no downtime. One morning last week, I went to Dr. Avaliani’s chic office to have a slew of sunspots removed from my face, including one the size of a dime in the middle of my cheek. I felt comfortable with this physician who has impeccable credentials. I knew this award-winning laser surgeon would expertly choose the proper attachments and settings for my exact skin type and skin issues. Pico derives from picosecond, which is one trillionth of a second. PicoSure delivers picosecond bursts of energy — rather than heat like other lasers — to gently target and more effectively eliminate problem areas without harming surrounding tissue. PicoSure has trademarked the term Skin Cell Activation, which is a way of describing how PicoSure works. It literally activates cells to produce important proteins that signal other cells to begin a healing response. Not only will my sunspots fade in a few weeks, but the ultra-short bursts of energy have signaled my body to produce collagen and elastin for improved facial rejuvenation. The number of treatments can vary from one for simpler sunspots to several for wrinkling and tattoos. What was the treatment like? It was a multi-step process that Dr. Avaliani explained carefully as she proceeded. No numbing is required; I held a hose that flowed cold air as the laser passed over my face. It was easy to direct the soothing air wherever the SocialLifeMagazine.com

Before

After

laser went. Dr. Avaliani encouraged me to speak up if I needed a break at any point, and she asked me how I was doing as we went along, but really I was fine. Because the bursts of energy are ultra-short, the feeling came and went literally one trillionth of a second at a time. Even though I had sunspots on every section of my face, and some fine lines above my lip, the entire treatment was over in just minutes. Dr. Avaliani applied sunscreen to my face, gave me simple, printed instructions, and said I could apply makeup immediately. For a few hours my cheeks were pinker than usual and my skin felt tight, but by late afternoon all pinkness and sensation had disappeared. There’s no real downtime — for anyone. A week later, things are progressing exactly as Dr. Avaliani predicted. Although my sunspots have darkened — the expected phase before they fade away in a few weeks — their pigment is shattering. My body’s healing response is underway. An unanticipated bonus for having sunspots on my nose is that I already have smaller pores for the first time ever! Expect the best of care from Dr. Avaliani’s practice, from a warm welcome to a caring follow-up call after receiving the best in cosmetic medicine. HOMEMADE HEALTHIER SUMMER MARTINI RECIPE! By Liana Werner-Gray

W

ho else wants to get a dose of vitamins while also enjoying a refreshing summer martini? Homemade cocktails that are healthier than usual are the most fun to make! Many of us are making more of our own meals than ever before, and a major benefit to this is that we get to see and control all the ingredients that go into them. The same is true for cocktails. We can filter out sneaky ingredients that can cause migraines, crazy hangovers, inflammation, or overnight weight gain. Cocktails often include refined white sugar or corn syrup. Instead, we can use fresh fruits and even vegetable juice to create a cocktail that gives us vitamins and antioxidants as well as a nice buzz! I’m so excited to share this recipe with you. As a nutritionist, I am often asked, “Can I drink alcohol and be healthy? . . . What is the healthiest alcohol I can drink?” To determine whether an alcoholic beverage, or any food for that matter, is healthy, simply think, What process did this go through to get to where it is right now? The healthiest foods are ones that are

the most whole, plucked straight from your own garden ideally. For alcohol, think wine, tequila, and vodka. Wine comes from grapes, and a lot of love and care go into the production of most wines. Tequila comes from a cactus. Vodka can come from vegetables or wheat. I prefer vodka from potatoes, but I recently came across coconut vodka, which I used for a watermelon martini recipe included here. During quarantine I finished writing a new book, AnxietyFree with Food, which comes out in December. During my research, I was pleasantly surprised to find studies that have shown drinking certain alcohol in moderation contributes to good mental health. One study showed that women who drink one to two glasses of Champagne or wine a night have less stress and anxiety than someone who doesn’t drink at all, or someone who drinks three to four a night. For men it was two to three a night to relieve anxiety. As long as a drink isn’t loaded with added sugars, I am convinced we can enjoy drinking in a healthy and balanced life. Social Life

Watermelon Martini Total time: 10 minutes Makes 4 martinis Serves 4

My book 10-minute Recipes has an array of adult beverage recipes, so I figured what a great time to put all these recipes to use! I recently got a new Nama juicer and have been experimenting with all kinds of juices. If you have kids, you can serve them a fresh juice mocktail! I love making green juice, beet juice, and even almond milk and oat milk. The Nama juicer is cold-press technology, which means you can make a bigger batch and drink it three days later, because it doesn’t lose nutrients like juice from a fast juicer that oxygenates the juice. Plus, the Nama extracts more juice from fruits and vegetables. The pulp is near dry, so you get more for our money! It’s definitely worth checking out, and I have a code you can use: Liana to get 10% off your juicer at namawell.com Liana Werner-Gray Best-selling author of The Earth Diet, Cancer Free with Food, and 10-minute Recipes Nutritionist at Complete Wellness NYC @LianaWernerGray lianawernergray.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

REBECCA RAU By Carlos Lacayo ART & ANTIQUES DEALER COMES TO THE HAMPTONS Rebecca Rau is the fourth generation of her family to get involved in the art and antiques business in New Orleans. “On one hand it always felt inevitable that I would join the family business,” Rebecca confided, “I also felt a desire to carve out my own goals and plans, but the reality was my interest kept coming back to fine art.” Rebecca oversees strategic development at M.S. Rau, the internationally acclaimed dealer in fine art, rare antiques, and jewelry. Founded in 1912, the 108-year old family-owned business has grown to be one of the largest galleries in the country. Through the years, M.S. Rau has sold and exhibited works and antiques bearing notable names, including Vincent Van Gogh, Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill, Elvis Presley, and Prince. Rebecca grew up to understand M.S. Rau, “I started to appreciate how special the gallery is, and I felt the responsibility and desire to help shape it for the future.” HAMPTONS VIRTUAL ARTS FAIR This year, M.S. Rau will show work at the Hamptons Virtual Art Fair, a 3-D event that welcomes collectors to view art safely from home. Rebecca believes M.S. Rau’s, 19th century and early 20thcentury art, including Impressionist works, will catch the eye of art enthusiasts. “We have a large collection. Over time, a larger portion of our collection moved into the 20th century, but we focus on art across history, with the 19th century being a historic strong suit,” Rebecca explained. Rau will be showing masterpieces by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, René Magritte, and Norman Rockwell, to name but a few. “Hopefully, this event will help us meet Hamptonites and expose them to what we do, but because this is an online event, it’s open to people from anywhere,” Rebecca said. “I feel like we have the best of both worlds between meeting new collectors and being able to share this project with our audience as well.” hamptonsvirtualartfair.com RAU FOR ART FOUNDATION Rebecca is also the director of the business’s philanthropic organization, the Rau for Art Foundation. It was founded in 2012 to celebrate the company’s centennial and support future artists in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. The foundation provides art supplies to classrooms in need, as well as college scholarships to talented high school artists, through its annual art competition. Usually, there

is an awards luncheon for the finalists, but Rebecca was forced to be creative during the pandemic. “We surprised all of the winners at their homes with their awards, big checks, and TV cameras,” Rebecca said, “It was really uplifting, especially since these kids have been cooped up at home.” The coming academic year will mark the foundation’s tenth anniversary and Rebecca will announce an exciting new development for the celebration. A MUSEUM WITH PRICE TAGS With new one-of-a-kind objects consistently coming through M.S. Rau’s doors, Rebecca jokes that people often call them “a museum with price tags,” but loves that there is always something unique to share every time clients visit. Looking to the future, Rebecca said, “We are always searching for rare and important items to offer our collectors. That’s our bread and butter and that’s what we will keep doing.” M.S. FIRST LADY OF PHILANTHROPY

JEAN SHAFIROFF By Bennett Marcus Photography by Michael Paniccia

The philanthropist Jean Shafiroff is a longtime leader on the New York-Hamptons charity circuit, chairing numerous fundraising events each year and donating to countless causes with which she is not directly involved. Holding an MBA in finance from Columbia University and having worked in both public finance and private partnerships on Wall Street, Jean’s business acumen and fundraising capabilities are in high demand among charitable organizations, and she sits on the boards of multiple foundations. A humanitarian and author hailed as New York’s First Lady of Philanthropy by both Hello and Hola! magazines, Jean is also a fashion lover, known for her iconic sense of style. She has built a museum-worthy collection of designer and couture ball gowns that she plans to donate to a museum one day, and has often appeared on best-dressed lists. In 2018, LookOnLine recognized Jean on its international best-dressed list alongside Anna Wintour and Meghan Markle. “I was in good company!” she says with a laugh. Now that the global Covid-19 pandemic has brought changes to every aspect of life, the in-person galas which are a major source of funding for nonprofit organizations have come to a halt. Yet Jean has not slowed her philanthropic work, but has adapted to the situation, nimbly shifting her charitable activities by advocating publicly on national TV and radio for causes such as food banks, organizing virtual fundraisers, and even hosting a television show that highlights various philanthropic organizations and their leaders. Jean has also somewhat refined the focus of her donations to help alleviate the immediate needs associated with the pandemic, including hunger and animal welfare, as Americans

suffer widespread illness and unemployment due to the coronavirus. “This is a year of tremendous transition for everyone,” says Jean, who has been sheltering at her Southampton home. “We’ve never lived through a pandemic; we’ve all had to switch gears.” TV SHOW FOCUSING ON PHILANTHROPY SUCCESSFUL PHILANTHROPY, Jean’s new weekly television show, debuted on LTV in the Hamptons. Each episode features Jean interviewing charity-world leaders from the community and beyond. Based on her book of the same name, the show, which airs four times per week, promotes the premise that anyone can be a philanthropist by donating time, knowledge, and available resources. The project came together quickly. Early in the pandemic, while appearing on a variety of national TV news programs to advocate for various causes, it was suggested to Jean that she consider hosting her own television program, and she was immediately intrigued with the idea. Producing and hosting the new show is hard work, but she loves it. “I don’t think there’s a talk show like this,” she says. ADAPTING PHILANTHROPIC WORK: FOOD PANTRIES, COVID FUNDS As soon as the Covid-19 restrictions took effect and inperson fundraising galas were no longer feasible, Jean began making several national television and radio appearances to advocate on behalf of food pantries, racial justice, and animal causes. Regarding the recent concern about Covid-19 and animals, she often discusses the very few cases where animals Social Life

contracted the virus, and also explains CDC guidelines for pet owners. “I did a lot of research, and continue to do so,” says Jean. “As of this date, there has not been one confirmed case of an animal giving a human the virus. So I report this in the media, and talk about how adoptions are up.” In recent months, Jean and her husband, Martin, have shifted some of their charitable donations to Covid-19 funds and to food pantries like Heart of the Hamptons in response to the pandemic. “I am impressed with the work of the food pantries during this crisis, and I feel compelled to donate,” she says. Some organizations with which Jean has long been involved, and whose covid-19 funds she has supported include American Humane, New York Women’s Foundation, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Southampton Animal Shelter, NYC Mission Society, Global Strays, and Surgeons of Hope. With social upheaval across the country, Jean has also been advocating for racial justice via her social media channels. “I believe that racial justice must be achieved very soon.” She also uses her social media platforms — she has some 490,000 Instagram followers — to promote several charitable causes. NEW ROLE AT AMERICAN HUMANE A longtime animal welfare advocate, Jean was recently appointed an American Humane ambassador, and then the national spokesperson for American Humane’s Feed the Hungry program, which gives grants earmarked for food to animal shelters across the United States. “Many animals are going hungry because a tremendous amount of funding for rescue centers has dried up,” she says. “It is a great program and I am honored to serve as the national spokesperson. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000 to feed 1,000,000 animals. We have already raised more than half that amount and given out grants to feed 550,000 animals.” Jean serves on the boards of the Southampton Hospital Association; the honorary board of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation; the New York Mission Society; the French Heritage Society; the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT; The Jewish Board (honorary trustee); Global Strays, an animal welfare nonprofit founded by her daughter. For her philanthropy, Jean has been honored many times by organizations, including the Stonybrook Southampton Hospital, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, New York City Mission Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Surgeons of Hope, and even Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. Jean is a former board member of the New York Women’s Foundation, and she remains extremely active with this foundation. A Catholic, Jean has also been honored for her work by The Jewish Board and Hadassah.

VIRTUAL GALAS With in-person charity galas for such worthy organizations off limits during the pandemic, virtual fundraising has become the norm. Jean recently served as a host and chair of virtual galas for the Stonybrook Southampton Hospital and the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, respectively. She believes that these alternative types of fundraisers are a good way for people to stay involved with the causes they support. “We all miss the big galas, but we are grateful to stay virtually connected.” The day we spoke for this article, Jean discussed her role as the chair of the Southampton Animal Shelter’s Matching Fund Program, for which the shelter hopes to raise $500,000. We are not holding an event. We are a group of people who have formed with a common goal; we have weekly conference calls, and we are dedicated to the cause.” In the fall, she plans to be involved chairing and hosting other virtual galas as they are planned. GRATEFUL, HOPEFUL Jean loves the Hamptons and is grateful to be here. “We have six adults and five rescue dogs in my home. I’m being very careful because I would not want to get the virus or spread it, and I also would not want to be a burden on the hospital system,” she says. She and her family have been entertaining a bit, outside in their backyard with small groups who are all socially distanced and masked. Jean loves to entertain — in 2018, she was listed as one of the nation’s top 100 hosts as reported in Town & Country magazine — but, of course, this is not the year to hold big parties. Jean and her family have been ordering takeout meals from area restaurants to help support the local business community. “We have so many great restaurants in the Hamptons and new ones are always opening up. I especially love Sant Ambroeus, Nick & Toni’s, Tutto il Giorno, Bamboo, and Naia.” Despite the difficult challenges facing us, Jean is hopeful. “I am very pleased to see how people in philanthropy have come together to assist during this pandemic, especially since it is very difficult for many charities to raise funds at this time. It is wonderful to see so many people supporting one another and showing compassion. It is key to reach out to others and show compassion. If we all work together and support one another we will have a much easier time getting through this pandemic.” Photography: Michael Paniccia Hair: Henry de la Paz for Warren Tricomi Make-up: JP Ramirez Cover Dress: Dolce & Gabbana Social Life

CATCHING UP WITH THE TRAILBLAZING ENTREPRENEUR

BETHENNY FRANKEL By Devorah Rose

ethenny Frankel, multifaceted and always busy, is still hard at work during the new normal. Recently, she poured herself into helping front line workers while continuing to explore her creative side through a new fashion project. Until we can all catch up with Bethenny on her new podcast, Just B, we can hear more details about all the things that have been keeping her busy.

Your name has become synonymous with helping those on the front line, specifically with providing medical masks. What an incredible journey you had to help our medical workers! Looking back, what was your most shocking discovery during your search and what did you learn from the experience? Navigating relief work is treacherous business and extremely urgent. Each situation has gnarly roadblocks to navigate. The PPE distribution involved cutting through many corrupt business practices. Each disaster adds a new element of education to this journey that continues.

Senlis is a feminine and stunning line that is created by women for women. What does working beside and supporting a woman-run business mean to you? I respect women who care about attention to detail, who are courageous enough to be entrepreneurs and strong enough to make a mark. Is female empowerment something you think about more because you are raising a daughter? It’s not something that I really think about. I think it’s just something that I am and I’m sure that I lead by example. You have always been known as someone who doesn’t hold back and truly tells it how she sees it. Is this what one should expect from your new podcast, Just B? The podcast is utterly unfiltered. choice but to be honest about my opinion. It may not be popular, but diluted I am not. I’d rather not do a podcast than to do a watered-down hesitant version of the truth. Let’s roll. . . . There is something very zen in the title Just B. It almost feels like there is encouragement toward self-acceptance and peace. Do you feel like you’ve come to a point in your life where you’ve embraced the idea of a que sera, sera attitude? Is acceptance something you practice? I’ve made some really courageous and daring career decisions. When I jump, I fly. I don’t make business choices because of money but rather because of passion. It’s a liberating place for me, and I definitely am at a transitional crossroads point. How much have your life and daily habits changed due to Covid, and are there pieces of that new normal that you enjoy? I really do normally live this way. I am an extreme homebody. I don’t really make many social plans and really avoid them because I end up cancelling. I work very well in adversity and flourish during challenging times. I am very good in a crisis and very productive in creating my own structure. If Bethenny a decade ago were sitting at a table with you enjoying a latte, what advice would you give her? Be organized. Execute. Don’t procrastinate. . . . I did give SocialLifeMagazine.com

myself this advice and I listened. I’d also say not to worry but I wouldn’t listen. You can’t be who you’re not. I only sweat the small stuff. You’ve created many businesses during your storied career. Are new ventures brewing right now? Anything you can share with us? I have entered the fruit preserves business as an extension to salad dressings, popcorn, coffee, supplements, apparel, and shapewear. These categories have been alive for almost a decade and they now are really successful. This Skinnygirl brand is going the distance. The Big Shot with Bethenny films in the fall. We are producing two other shows to be announced in the near future. The podcast will be incredible, and I have a few brand surprise tricks up my sleeve. My business at HSN is expanding into other categories as a result of its tremendous success there. I’m creating a brand there as well. Business is absolutely excellent. I have reorganized and shifted and we are lean and a well-oiled streamlined machine. What is your ultimate creative dream? Is there a goal you would like to reach above all else? Or is there a simple joy that you look forward to working on in the future? I just take things day by day. I love real estate and home design and being outside and athletic and being with my daughter. I’m a very complicated simple person. Xo

SIMPLY ICONIC : DISCOVERING YOUR FAVORITE SONGWRITER

DESMOND CHILD By Devorah Rose

How old were you when you sang Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer at the top of your lungs with your closest friend . . . or Aerosmith’s Crazy? You probably know by heart the lyrics to Joan Jett’s I Hate Myself for Loving You. You’ve definitely been at a party when the DJ played Livin’ La Vida Loca or Shake Your Bon-Bon and, inevitably, you were unable to stop yourself from dancing. These songs are all so stylistically different, yet they share one thing in common. Let’s up the stakes of this guessing game. What do Shakira, Barbra Streisand, Kiss, Selena Gomez, and Hall & Oates also have in common? These artists have all co-written the songs you love with Desmond Child. He has been writing your life’s playlist — the hits you’ve daydreamed and cried to — for several decades. After taking a moment to contemplate the type of talent one must have to create such varied music, I did my best to ask Desmond the questions I think we are all dying to know the answers to.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

You’ve co-written songs with incredible artists who have unique voices and personas — from Katy Perry to Alice Cooper to Cher. How is it possible for you to be proficient for so many different and unique voices? One of the gifts my mother gave me was the strong ability to empathize with the many artists I collaborate with. I put myself in their shoes, and then through time, into their minds, hearts and souls with the power of my creative imagination. I believe that when an artist chooses a song or part in a film or play there is something they need to connect with on a deep level so they can evolve as human beings. For those that listen or watch their performances, we get to connect their story to ours. The arts help us to become more human and relate to each other as equals. There are those who consciously or subconsciously don’t want this, so they push for more cuts in the arts, which hurt all of us.



F E AT U R E S

Ricky Martin and Desmond Child; photo by Curtis Shaw Child

How do you switch from co-writing something like La Vida Loca to writing for say Aerosmith or alongside Barbra Streisand? I read that Picasso once said when asked about his little known poetry, ‘A true artist must be able to sail to different shores.’ I enjoy the richness of every genre of music but what puts the wind in my sails is the message . . . what the words are saying. Words can be set to any style and the artists will dictate the musical atmosphere for their story. Can you speak about inspiration and what fuels your writing process? I was born an artist . . . my mother was an artist . . . it’s in my blood. Anything I see or feel can ignite a creative journey. I never run out of ideas . . . only coffee. What are your writing habits? Do you write every day? I write when it’s time to write. I show up whether in person or these days on Skype or Facetime ready to enter the sacred creative circle with my co-writers and be totally in the moment with them. Nothing else exists for me during those hours.

How did you learn to play music? My mother played both guitar and piano by ear, and so I grew up playing music by ear as well. Music has a way of embedding itself into our subconscious. For millions of years music was an oral history that was passed down from generation to generation. I am a part of that tradition. Later, I attended and graduated from NYU with a bachelor of science in music education. There I learned a classical approach to music that deepened my understanding. How did you get involved in the Kaufman Music Center? My dear friend and fellow ASCAP board member Joel Beckerman asked me to do masterclasses in songwriting with Kaufman students and I loved it so much, especially the Cover Me event where they took turns performing my songs. I wish I had had the Kaufman Music Center when I was growing up. I was impressed by the caliber of students and their eagerness to learn. I was especially surprised by the youngest member of the class, who was very skeptical and kept challenging me and questioning everything I said. That’s great! I love the hard questions. That’s how it should be. I think the Kaufman Music Social Life

Center should serve as an example for other cities and communities across the U.S. to create similar schools. Can you speak to us about your latest project? I have a new No. 1 hit with Swiss artist Ava Max called Kings & Queens, which makes it my official sixth decade for No. 1 hits. I’m releasing a fun single called Viva La Diva with Countess Luann of The Real Housewives Of New York City next month. On October 2nd, BMG Rights will be releasing the two re-mastered albums from my original pop band, Desmond Child & Rouge. I’m putting the finishing touches on my autobriography, DESMOND CHILD • LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER • BIG SONGS BIG LIFE, with David Ritz, to be released at the beginning of 2021. What is one of the driving forces behind writing your autobiography? I wrote the book for my sons to get to know me as a person. That’s how I will get to live forever inside their hearts. They will get to feel who I am. And that’s how it is when I read my mother’s poems. I get to experience her as a fellow human being. I get to deeply experience her uniqueness. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What do you see in the future and what is your ideal project? I love Broadway musicals and have been working on one titled Cuba Libra with my collaborator Davitt Sigerson. It’s the true story of my family before and after the Cuban Revolution. I’m also developing another musical titled Bye Bye Love. which tells the bigger-than-life love story and celebrates the music of husband-and-wife songwriting team Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. When did you fall in love with music? My mother was the late Cuban songwriter and poet Elena Casals, known today as ‘La Musa’ (La Musa Awards / LatinSongHall.org). I grew up listening to her write her soulful boleros and didn’t know that most people didn’t write songs. I thought it was the way everyone expressed their emotions and told the story of their lives. So as soon as I could crawl up onto the piano bench, I was plunking away and singing along, learning how to rhyme words and compose melodies and chords. I connect to my mother through her poems, and I’m working right now on a collection of her work called My Cardboard Boxes / Mis Cajas De Cartón (elenacasals.com). With all these new incredible projects in the works and a No. 1 hit single, I know I’m elated and full of anticipation to enjoy what’s to come!

I have been so impressed with the work of the foundation and have been so fortunate to be involved with your work. Ana Oliveira, you are a dynamic and visionary leader. Times have changed radically from last year; the world is suffering from a pandemic. What is the foundation doing to support women and girls affected by the crisis? Jean, first I’d like to thank you for your generous support of our work and then your involvement as a host, co-chair, and underwriter of many of our events for the past 10 years. In the wake of Covid-19, our grantee partners confirmed that the pandemic was taking its gravest tolls on the city’s most marginalized communities: girls and women; transgender, gender-

nonconforming, nonbinary (TGNCNB) persons; individuals from communities of color and immigrant communities; older women; and women and girls with disabilities. Through our Resilience NYC: COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund, we were able to quickly provide additional support to financially stabilize small grassroots organizations, to provide healing and

MARY E. FRANK JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS MARY E. FRANK, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF THE PARRISH ART MUSEUM By Jean Shafiroff

Mary, how did your involvement with the Parrish Art Museum begin? When you are passionate about art, it is important to visit and support museums where you live. On my first visit to the Parrish, Trudy Kramer, the director at the time, took me through the entire collection and I was hooked. As president of the Miami Art Museum, I worked with Herzog & de Meuron, the same architects who designed the Parrish. I often compared notes, first with Trudy and then with Terrie Sultan, the director who followed after Trudy. Terrie's vision and determination persuaded me to join the board in 2017. With Terrie’s resignation from the Parrish, we have begun the search for a new director, knowing that someone will succeed her, but we will never replicate her remarkable contributions to the Parrish.

Now that the Parrish has re-opened its doors, what’s in store? Everyone feels safer outside now, so we’ve created a new outdoor sculpture initiative, including four iconic Jaume Plensa heads in the South Meadow, and a classic Jim Dine work appropriately titled Wheatfields. A monumental work by Joel Perlman, a neighbor who is known worldwide, is sited in the North Meadow. Outdoor programs include live concerts with worldrenowned musicians and critically acclaimed films, including a two-day Black film festival in collaboration with Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center. We’re delighted to reopen our galleries with three exhibitions, organized by the chief curator, Alicia Longwell. My favorite is Southampton Suite, a group of large-scale paintings by Lucien Smith that evoke a gentle rainfall on a summer day — marking Social Life

the artist’s first museum exhibition. Jackie Black’s Last Meal exhibition is a series of 24 photographs by the Shelter Island resident depicting death-row inmates’ last meal requests. The vibrancy of the images creates a stark contrast to the context of the meal. The largest exhibition, drawn from our deep collection of works by Fairfield Porter, presents poetry and paintings by Porter and friends — including Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Frank O’Hara, and James Schulyer, who visited the artist in Southampton and Maine for decades.

How can people volunteer at the museum, or donate to support the Parrish through ‘Save the Plate’? We are very grateful to our volunteers for their dedication and passion. At this time, we’ve put those opportunities on hold. Concerning donations to ‘Save the Plate,’ you can make your contribution online at parrishart.org/midsummerparty2020 or contact Kendra Korczak midsummerparty@parrishart.org with any questions.

The Midsummer Party, sadly, was cancelled. Any plans for this year? Gala co-chairs Debbie Bancroft and Preston Phillips came up with a creative reimagining of our largest annual fundraiser, called ‘Save the Plate.’ In lieu of a virtual gala, we are offering supporters a limited-edition artist’s plate, an adapted design by Mary Heilmann — a renowned artist in the Parrish collection — of her painting Waimea, 2020. We are counting on past supporters to continue their tradition of giving and establish a new artistic legacy. Mary Heilmann

Supporters will receive a specific number of limited-edition Mary Heilmann plates based on the contribution, beginning at $500 up to $100,000, with many levels in between. A contribution to the museum is more meaningful now than ever. The museum serves many communities. What is its role for the future? Visitors come from around the world to see our building and visit our galleries. We rely on our international reputation to raise support for the most important group that we serve, day in and day out: the diverse year-round community. Our annual student exhibition is a 65-year tradition, and I am very proud of our long and enduring partnerships with organizations and cultural institutions, including the Southampton Youth Association, Alzheimer Foundation, Sag Harbor Cinema, and Eastville Historical Museum. What sparked your interest in and commitment to the art world? I have always been passionate about art. Growing up with very modest means, I visited many museums, pored over art books, and dreamed of finding a way to fill my life with art and share the joy it brings. I am incredibly lucky because that dream came true, both academically and economically. The Parrish gives me the opportunity to help make dreams come true for others who share my passion. Working through this challenging time is one of the most difficult, and most fulfilling, things I have ever done.

AI WEIWEI, JACK LERNER LARSON, WILLEM DE KOONING, YOKO ONO, ROBERT INDIANA, FERNANDO BOTERO & ISABELLE BSCHER Artist Ai Weiwei @ LongHouse Reserve

LongHouse Reserve’s spectacular art-dotted gardens in East Hampton are now open for members and the public, with safety measures in place. The 16-acre reserve, including a museum, was founded by Jack Lerner Larson in 1986. On view is the celebrated artist Ai Weiwei’s show Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Bronze. Twelve monumental bronze animal heads — each ten-feet high — represent the traditional figures of the Ai Weiwei’s Zodiac Heads @ LongHouse Chinese zodiac. Speaking on his art and legacy, Weiwei says, “The art always wins. Anything can happen to me, but the art will stay.” This is the third time the controversial Chinese artist has shown his work at LongHouse. In 2013 the artist received the LongHouse Award while under house arrest in Beijing and had to pirate out his acceptance speech via video. WeiWei has donated a Lego portrait titled Zodiac (Rabbit) valued at $150K to LongHouse’s online benefit auction. The LongHouse gardens are artfully strewn with work by Willem de Kooning, Buckminster Fuller, and Yoko Ono, to name but a few. longhouse.org

Isabelle Bscher Shows Botero in the Hamptons

Fernando Botero, whose works are in MoMA and other museums around the world, has become famous and rich by painting, well, fat ladies and gentlemen. An online exhibition titled BOTERO: Recent Works is now available to view virtually on Isabelle Bscher’s Galerie Gmurzynska’s website. In this new

series of watercolors, Botero uses the canvas itself in his artistic palette. Botero highlights the physicality of the material in these portraits, which are a playful and serene celebration of life. Botero said, “What makes watercolor special and different is that the light comes from the whiteness of the support. That’s why some areas in the works are left unpainted. In contrary to that concept, most of the times in my oil paintings the colors cover all the surface.” The online show also includes some classic Botero works, including Woman in a Shower and horse sculptures. In response to the pandemic, Bscher, a third-generation, international gallerist, Botero’s Woman in a Shower quickly pivoted to virtual exhibitions to make the artwork accessible to collectors and art lovers around the world. Her three galleries in Switzerland remain open with social distancing guidelines adhered to. Bscher’s NYC Galerie Gmurzynska, at 43 East 78th Street, is currently showing works by Robert Indiana virtually or by appointment. gmurzynska.com

Wes said, “I wanted fame, but I thought it would be incremental; I became afraid of the overnight-sensation thing.” Kelly Reilly, who plays Costner’s feisty daughter, confided, “I love strong women in films that are allowed to play women and not male fantasies.”

RACHEL’S RADAR RIDING HORSES DURING COVID-19 By Rachel Heller

Rachel Heller and Georgina Bloomberg

R

iding a horse is an exciting experience for many people. During this pandemic, it’s a way to be active and take your mind off the reality of what’s happening around us. It’s a way to breathe in the fresher air and feel just wonderful! As a child, I was always more interested in riding my pony and learning how to care for the animal than spending time with my toys in my bedroom. Being alone with a horse is so life changing. I rode at Two Trees and those early years of pony camp taught me how to care for others, animals, and the importance of responsibility. Riding for me started at age four. It was not only my favorite sport; it was my life throughout my school years. I started my riding career with jumping and later switched to dressage. For me, dressage was beautiful and more about precision than anything else. It was special to combine the physical thrill of riding a horse with caring for an animal that relied on just me for its water, food, and, most importantly, love. There are many beautiful stables in the Hamptons, and I suggest taking a lesson or two at each barn to find your perfect match. My favorite for riding in splendor out East is Campbell Stables in Water Mill, owned by the family of my friend Seth Campbell. But each stable is beneficial for a different reason. For example, if you don’t have your own horse, it’s important to find the right match. Teacher, rider, and pony or horse go hand in hand. It’s a formula that must be correct and safe. I never ever rode a horse that was green until I was advanced. You never want to ride a horse with a bad temper, because it might

bite or exhibit other aggressive and scary behavior. I suggest beginning riders get comfortable and strong on a schooled horse first. You’re not going to learn math by starting with a calculus problem. First the basics must be mastered. You get your legs strong before you can walk. The strength you need to ride a horse comes from your core. Riding is a centered sport, which teaches one balance and good posture. Unfortunately, one of the most exciting horse shows of the summer, The Hampton Classic, is no longer scheduled to take place due to Covid-19. People had come from all over the world to ride and be a spectator. I spoke to two friends who ride. Alex Hamer said, “I’ve been riding every single day during Covid and it has been so helpful. It’s easy to social distance because you are at least six feet away from another horse anyway. Another friend is a polo rider who frequently travels with his team, and lately he’s been in Palm Beach and Wellington, Florida, training polo riders in a pony camp. He loves working with the children. We spoke about how hard it is to train when all the gyms have been closed. You can Google “horseback riding Hamptons” to find a wide selection of stables throughout the Hamptons. Their websites will give you info on hours and programs available for adults and children. You’re sure to find a stable that fits your needs. Rachel Heller Instagram: @rachelhellerxo Social Life

DAVID WILDENSTEIN & LUCREZIA BUCCELLATI A FIRST LOOK AT THEIR ULTRA-PRIVATE ECO-ESTATE By Ann Grenier

O

ne of Connecticut’s most stunning and expansive equestrian estates is now available for private viewings for the first time. The sprawling 152-acre country escape comes courtesy of David Wildenstein — whose family controls the Wildenstein Institute, the world’s foremost art organization — and Lucrezia Buccellati — the scion and co-creative director of the renowned Buccellati jewelry brand. The property is a marriage of rustic American tranquility and Italian luxury, located just 80 minutes from Manhattan at 1 Glenn Brook Farm Road in the quiet town of Sherman, in Fairfield County. Neighbors include bold-faced names such as Diane von Furstenberg, Bob Iger, Jeffrey Toobin, and Rob Zombie. “Wildenstein and Buccellati: These names are associated with fine art and the most exquisite jewelries, things that are beautiful, ultra-luxurious and chic,” says Classiques Modernes’ lifestyle and realty expert, Loy Carlos. “David and Lucrezia are also true nature lovers who wanted to create a forward-looking agricultural estate for the production of eco-friendly, renewable crops like hemp and medicinal plants. It’s a different kind of luxury lifestyle that is both mindful and principled, and very much aligned with who they are.” “Lucrezia and I wanted to build a home where we could enjoy the serenity of the woods, a return to quiet nature,” says Wildenstein. “She loves horses and I enjoy farming. We were growing hemp, for example, to explore its use as a viable alternative for wood to use in construction, to help combat global warming.

We are very much into organic farming as well. Sherman feels like a countryside within five minutes of suburban amenities and recreational facilities that are also essential to our family.” The listing agent, Kenneth J. Moore, president of Classiques Modernes, says the estate is one of just five properties in the area boasting more than 50 acres. Built with easy expansion in mind, the 7,000-square-foot, open-loft-style mansion features vaulted cathedral ceilings in the great room, six bedrooms, and seven marble baths. Indoor amenities include a recreation room, home theater, gourmet kitchen with custom walnut millwork, Miele appliances, and a grand terrace overlooking the bucolic grounds. For the owners, the terrace was a very important consideration. “Lucrezia very much wanted the house to feel open and the outdoors to be a part of our everyday living. It is something we enjoy whenever we are in Italy and the type of lifestyle she is accustomed to,” explains Wildenstein. Surrounded by land trusts on three sides, the land comprises 25 acres of fields and 127 acres of woods, two scenic ponds as well as an 11-horse barn and staff quarters. Because there are no conservation easements, the estate is ideal for agricultural and equine use, or even as a serene corporate retreat. Better still, it is subject to Public Act 490, meaning that real estate taxes are just $22,000 per year. Classiques Modernes International Realty classiquesmodernes.com/properties Social Life

Sunset in Key West

EXPLORE HISTORIC KEY WEST, FOUNDED IN 1829 Why not take a road trip on your way to or from Palm Beach or Miami if the thought of getting on a crowded plane makes you anxious during these challenging times. When the weather cools down on the East Coast and Florida beckons, don’t overlook the many charms of Key West, which is surrounded by sparkling blue water and has dozens of delicious and safe outdoor dining options. WORLD CLASS BOAT RACES This picturesque city, founded in 1829, is especially interesting if you’re a history and architecture buff, or have kids who like shipwrecks, buried treasure, and running around Civil War-era forts while jumping on old cannons. I was there for the famous Race World Offshore World Championships, when high-speed powerboats race around Key West Harbor at speeds of up to 140 miles per hour. Passengers in the massive private yachts get an up-close view. This year the famous race will be held from November 8 to November 15. I stayed at Pier House, where my balcony faced all the fast-paced ac-

Walking in this area, you see all the Victorian mansions, and the hotel is within walking distance to most of the important historical attractions. pierhouse.com You can also rent a classic Victorian and bring the entire family for a fun trip. OCCUPIED BY PIRATES Key West was controlled throughout the years by Spain, Britain, and Cuba, and was home to Bahamians and pirates at times, until finally, in 1822, the United States claimed it. American businessman John W. Simonton, who purchased the island from a Spanish naval officer for $2,000, immediately started using it as we do today — spending the winter there and returning to his home in Washington, D.C., for the warmer months. As an entrepreneurial businessman, Simonton looked to develop the island. He divided it into lots and successfully lobbied to establish a naval base. Industry followed, and by the 1830s, Key West was the richest city per capita in the United States, and by 1889, it was the largest and wealthiest city in Florida. Social Life

Calvin Klein’s Octagon House

FAMOUS RESIDENTS & MARGARITAVILLE Over the years its Victorian charms attracted a who’s who of renowned residents, the most famous of whom was Ernest Hemingway, whose former home is now a fascinating museum. Many other literary lions have made their homes in Key West, including the poets Robert Frost and Wallace Stevens, the playwright Tennessee Williams, and the authors Shel Silverstein (who lived there until his death) and Judy Blume (who still lives there). The prolific author Meg Cabot, whose Princess Diaries series of books were adapted into movies starring Anne Hathaway, is also a resident. Other famous folks who have called Key West home include President Harry S. Truman, who spent winters in his home dubbed the “Little White House.” The fashion designer Calvin Klein lived in the iconic Octagon House; the professional baseball pitcher Bronson Arroyo was born there; and the actress Kelly McGillis even owned a restaurant in town. And, of course, Jimmy Buffett, who rose to musical fame while living in Key West and established his Margaritaville empire there.

WHAT TO DO IN KEY WEST ERNEST HEMINGWAY HOME Ernest Hemingway moved to Key West from Paris in the 1920s, and later the family of his then wife Pauline bought the couple a Spanish-style walled compound, where he penned works, including The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Green Hills of Africa, and To Have and Have Not. Hemingway lived in the house from 1931 until 1938, and his ex-wife Pauline remained there until her death in 1961. It is now a museum and National Historic Landmark, and houses Hemingway memorabilia, including his typewriter, his iron-framed bed, and a urinal he brought home from Sloppy Joe’s bar, repurposed as a fountain. Roaming the grounds are over 40 cats, many of them six-toed descendants of Snow White, a white six-toed feline given to Papa Hemingway by a ship’s caption. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Hemingway House

The house was one of the first in Key West to have indoor plumbing and a swimming pool, which was a major undertaking at that time, and extravagantly expensive at $20,000, around $250,000 today. While Hemingway had planned the pool, his wife Pauline oversaw its construction while he was away working as a war correspondent covering the Spanish Civil War. Legend has it that upon returning, Hemingway was so enraged by the costs of the half-finished project that he flung a penny to the ground and said, “Pauline, you’ve spent all but my last penny, so you might as well have that!” She had the penny embedded into the cement surrounding the pool, where it remains to this day. hemingwayhome.com GO FISHING LIKE Ernest Hemingway PAPA HEMINGWAY Key West is a fisherman’s paradise — deep-sea fishing in the Florida Straits for game fish (Hemingway’s and President Truman’s favorite) as well as fishing around shipwreck reefs for snapper and grouper, and fishing along inshore channels and mangrove islands. Guides and charters for all levels are available. f la-keys.com/key-west/ fishing PRESIDENT TRUMAN’S LITTLE WHITE HOUSE The Little White House was built in 1890 as naval command headquarters and

earned its current name when President Harry S. Truman used the place as his winter home from 1946 through 1952. In 1911 it was turned into a single-family dwelling, and President William Taft stayed there in 1912, on his way to Panama to view the canal under construction. Thomas Edison stayed in the house during WWI, helping the U.S. Navy develop underwater weapons. After Truman’s visits, subsequent presidents stayed there, too. The museum displays Truman memorabilia in the rooms where he and his wife, Bess, lived, including his famous “The Buck Stops Here” desk sign. trumanlittlewhitehouse.com MEL FISHER’S TREASURE MUSEUM Mel Fisher was a treasure hunter whose most famous find was the Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sunk in 1622, from which Fisher’s company recovered $450 million worth of, well, treasure, including 40 tons of gold and silver, over 100,000 Spanish coins known as “pieces of eight,” Colombian emeralds, and other valuable artifacts. This motherlode was especially sweet for Fisher, who had spent 16 years and a lot of money fruitlessly searching for the sunken treasure until his shipwreck recovery team discovered it in 1985. A 1986 movie about his life, Dreams of Gold: The Mel Fisher Story, starred Cliff Robertson and Loretta Swit. The Treasure Museum gives a remarkable look at the recovery and has artifacts from this and other shipwrecks. melfisher.com Gold Coins Mel Fisher Treasure Museum

Shipwrreck Museum

SHIPWRECK MUSEUM The Key West Shipwreck Museum is not enormous, but there’s a lot of lore to soak up exploring 400 years of shipwreck salvage in the Florida Keys. You enter Key West’s past here, as actors, films, and artifacts from long-submerged ships transport you to 1856, when the Isaac Allerton sank. Discovered in 1985, it turned out to be one of the richest finds in history. The museum displays treasures from this and other wrecks. Try to lift the silver bar salvaged from the Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas, a Spanish galleon that sunk off the Bahamas in 1656, and be sure to climb to the top of the 65-foot lookout tower and enjoy the panoramic view of the picturesque city. keywestshipwreck.com FORT ZACHARY TAYLOR A visit to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is a great way to spend a fun day, roaming the walkways and scaling the walls of a beautiful relic dating from 1845. Considered a hidden gem, the site, named for President Zachary Taylor and known to locals as “Fort Zach,” was active in the Civil War, in which Key West, as a U.S. Naval base, sided with Northern abolitionists, unlike the rest of the South. Union troops were sent there to prevent the fort from falling into Confederate hands. The fort was also instrumental during the Spanish-American War of 1898, World Wars 1 and 2, and during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. fortzacharytaylor.com Social Life

Sea Turtle Key West Aquarium

GHOST & GRAVESTONES TOUR If you’ve got young kids, definitely get on the haunted trolley tour and go ghost hunting. This evening bus tour is creepy good fun, taking you past old homes haunted by former inhabitants; the Key West cemetery said to be rife with suffering, lost souls; Captain Tony’s haunted saloon; and the East Martello Fort, where you’ll meet Robert the doll, a bit like Chucky from those scary movies — except this isn’t a movie. trolleytours.com/key-west TROPICAL FOREST & BOTANICAL GARDEN The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is a relaxing oasis away from the bustle, a great way to spend a couple of hours. The 15-acre space has many rare specimen plants, which are identified, but this is not a typical groomed garden — it’s more of a natural landscape, showing us what Key West looked like in its natural state, before the hotels and condos arrived. There are boardwalk paths, making a walk in the forest easy, and you’ll find examples of champion tree specimens here. keywest.garden KEY WEST AQUARIUM The aquarium has exhibits that are both educational and fun. You can get up close to sea turtles, alligators, sharks, and jellyfish, and you can touch creatures like conch, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and even cow nose stingrays! The aquarium’s four resident sea turtles have suffered injuries and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has deemed them unable to survive on their own in the open ocean. The aquarium works with world-renowned veterinarians, and two of these turtles were the first in the world to receive biomimetic prosthetic flippers. keywestaquarium.com PELICAN PATH & HISTORIC WALKING TOURS Key West is compact and extremely walkable, and walking tours abound. One of the best, the Pelican Path historic walking tour, is free. It’s self-guided, takes one to two hours, and there’s a print version online, or the app Explore Historic Key West you can download for free. The tour takes you to historic buildings, like the Old City Hall, but also to all of Key West’s homes of historical importance, including the Audubon House, where naturalist John James Audubon worked and lived; the Robert Frost cottage; and the home restored by Jerry Herman, the Broadway lyricist and composer whose credits include Hello Dolly and Mame. The guide is easy to follow as it starts at Mallory Square in the center of town and gives directions to the next stop, e.g. “Turn right here & continue along Front St. to Clinton Square.” This tour is from the experts at Old Island Restoration Foundation, which also runs the Oldest House Museum, at 322 Duval Street, which is open to the public and is — surprise — the oldest house in South Florida, circa 1829. oldesthousemuseum.com

SUGAR BEACH A VICEROY RESORT & THE CHICEST HOTEL SAINT LUCIA NOW OPEN TO AMERICAN TRAVELERS By Inna DeSilva

W

hen I saw photos of the pop music star Dua Lipa and her boyfriend, Anwar Hadid, on a beach with The World Heritage Site Pitons in the distance, I immediately recalled the dreamlike stay I had at the Sugar Beach resort on St. Lucia this past December. This five-star heaven does everything right. As soon as I left customs, a Sugar Beach representative was there to greet me and offer a cold towel and cool bottle of water. The ride from the airport delighted me with beautiful scenery. On arrival, the friendly front desk offered me my choice of a cold coconut or a chilled local beer. The resort offers guestrooms, bungalows, villas, and private residences. After check-in I was driven by golf cart to my one-bedroom bungalow with a plunge pool and jaw-dropping views. After a nap on a luxurious king-sized four-poster bed, followed by a delectable dinner from room service, I walked down to the fabulous hotel pool for a midnight dip under the stars. The next morning, after a swim in my plunge pool, I made my way to the resort’s Great House for breakfast. As an experienced world traveler, I can attest that the breakfast buffet is a thing of beauty. Only in Europe’s grand hotels have I seen such bounty. The spread included everything from Europeanimported ham to various plant-based beverages, yogurts, freshly squeezed juices, and local honey.

If you can think of it, Sugar Beach has it, and has it from morning until late night. The hotel flies in European products, but unlike other Caribbean islands, St. Lucia can supply its resorts with vegetables and fruits grown in its rich volcanic soil as well as meat from its livestock farms and ranches. Local sources and extraordinary chefs are the reasons Sugar Beach is on a par with great European restaurants. This cannot be said about other Caribbean islands. During cocktails with the resort’s GM, Mark Sterner, along with his lovely partner, Kelly, I came to understand why everything at Sugar Beach is superb. Mark’s impressive background includes managing other five-star hotels: The Carlyle in NYC and the legendary Little Dix Bay Resort in the British Virgin Islands. Managers like Mark Sterner have been molded in European hotel schools, where the approach is to do whatever is necessary to please a client. They are taught that luxury is attainable with hard work. The island has plenty of things to do and see if you can tear yourself from the exquisite beach. From a chocolate plantation tour to hot mineral springs to zip lining to hiking, St. Lucia is an island to fall in love with and Sugar Beach is a world-class resort to return to time and again. viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/sugar-beach Social Life

SAFFORIA SAFFRON THE IT ELIXIR By George Wayne

Yass Grayeli, Esq. Founder & CEO of Safforia Photography by Borzu Ravan

Rosé is out and the elixir is in. And most pointedly, the Safforia saffron elixir, a ready-to-drink saffron potion. Elixirs were gaining traction as the next it energy drink before the pandemic sent the U.S. mood into a spiral. But now more than ever, the mindilluminating and naturally euphoric holistic quaff is exactly what the world needs. You drink it on its own, or you can pair it with your best tequila to guarantee the most naturally euphoric night of drinking you’ll ever have — and not wake up with a searing hangover the next morning. It tastes good and immediately adds brain rhythm. It’s great for your mood, focus, digestion, and stamina. This is the gush from its creator, Yass Grayeli. And GW cannot gush more. Because saffron is the world’s most expensive spice, I can only afford to have one bottle every other morning with my multi-vitamin regimen that starts the day. Another when the 3 p.m. slump sets in. A preworkout quaff before pounding the weights at the bespoke gym in Tribeca — if and when it reopens. Safforia is the perfect holistic energy drink. The effect is immediate — an immediate uptick to your emotional well-being. Seriously. It adds an instant lift to the overall cognitive function. Safforia truly elevates the mood in the most fabulous fashion. Yass’s grandmother’s depression led her to seek a holistic solution, and her research led her to saffron. It turns out that saffron is closely tied to Iranian culture, and as an Iranian-American, Yass was especially pleased with her discovery. It’s also been used for centuries in Indian Ayurvedic potions.

“And how do you think Cleopatra truly conquered Caesar and Marc Antony?’’ Yass quizzes. “Yes, it was her exotic hairstyle, her guile, and Egyptian pearls. But most of all it was the saffronsoaked potions and wines that she used for seduction. Why do you think she and Marc Antony had such combustible sex drives? It was the aphrodisiac, euphoric, and energy-inducing qualities of saffron.’’ Yass calls her Safforia saffron elixir a liquid sunshine in a fourounce bottle. She claims that saffron boosts natural serotonin, which in turn elevates the mood — in the most fabulous way. “Saffron is one of the most potent natural aphrodisiacs and anti-oxidants. That is why it is still the most coveted spice in the world.’’ It’s also expensive, and there’s a reason for that. The saffron pistil can be harvested only on eight days out of the year and it takes 40 man hours and 150,000 blossoms of the saffron pistil to collect one kilo of saffron. Safforia sources its saffron from the Asturias region of Spain. No idyllic idler should be without a six-pack of Safforia saffron elixir stashed in the mini-fridge . . . chilled. It’s the perfect quaff to complement that acai bowl at lunch. And nothing pairs more perfectly with fine tequila than this enticing elixir. You can order via Safforia’s website, as a one-time or subscription purchase. It comes in a box of 6 bottles, in two flavors: Bliss Royale lemonade and Gold Rush passion fruit. safforia.com Instagram: @safforiaelixir Social Life

OLD STOVE PUB REOPENS FAMED DOORS FOR 51ST YEAR By Rolise Rachel

ICONIC HAMPTONS RESTAURANT UNVEILS RENOVATIONS, NEW MENUS, AND EVENTS

Executive Chef Michael Gutowski

Burrata with Grilled Peaches and Balsamic Glaze

Classic Hamptons mainstay the Old Stove Pub is opening its famed doors for its 51st year. The iconic restaurant, live music venue, and celebrity favorite returns to the scene newly restored and featuring new culinary offerings along with some classic favorites. After being closed for renovations three years ago, and briefly put on the market for sale, the new operator and restaurant owner, Joseph DeCristofaro, has decided to turn on the Old Stove Pub’s classic neon sign for business once again. “The Old Stove Pub holds a special place in the hearts of Hamptonites,” notes DeCristofaro. “The history of the pub is so rich, and restoring this property was a true labor of love. We are proud to introduce the new and improved Old Stove Pub back into the community at this moment and looking forward to a very special summer and fall.” DeCristofaro, a Southampton local, born and raised in the Hamptons, is a real estate broker, real estate investor, and entrepreneur. A hospitality industry veteran, his past endeavors include numerous restaurants in the Hamptons and elsewhere. Located at 3516 Montauk Highway, in Sagaponack, the Old Stove Pub is open for dinner service Wednesday through Sunday, year-round. Outdoor dining and a dedicated outdoor area for cocktails will be offered during the summer months.

With customer safety and safe-distancing a major concern, the Old Stove Pub has transformed a large outdoor space replete with a dining patio and large grounds offering picnic tables, waitress service, and light fare. Indoors also offers several dining areas as well, with plenty of room for social distancing. Diners can expect a Mediterranean-influenced and locally-sourced menu with Greek highlights, featuring some of the Old Stove Pub’s best-known classic dishes, such as the Sagaponack dry-rubbed steak and Greek salad. Returning guests will be pleased to find the famed piano tuned and carefully relocated to the porch. The signature artwork by Leroy Neiman still hangs in the indoor dining room. ABOUT THE OLD STOVE PUB This restaurant is famously known for its glowing neon sign, bucking horse statue, porch front piano, and the slogan “When you’re fed up with the chic, come to the Greek.” Originally an 1820 farmhouse, the property became an Irish pub in 1967, a Greek restaurant and steakhouse in 1969, and the rest is history — known for its famous dedicated patrons, live music nights, and classic Greek and steak menu. CHEF SAUL MONTIEL CANTINA ROOFTOP By Aleksandar Nikodin

THE AMERICAN DREAM Saul Montiel, the executive chef of Cantina Rooftop, is a culinary star whose passion for cooking was nurtured by his mother and grandmother. Raised in the humble town of Atotonilco el Grande, in central-eastern Mexico, he developed his cooking skills working at his family’s two restaurants. Attracted to the ideals of the American Dream, Montiel journeyed from Mexico to NYC and worked to support himself and help his family in Mexico. “I came to America at the age of 16 with $25 in my pocket and an English vocabulary of 12 words! My biggest obstacles were the language barrier, supporting myself, and getting somebody to offer me a job without my having measurable experience,” said Montiel. He started as a dishwasher at Diva, Naci Yangin’s hip restaurant in SoHo. Although grateful for the opportunity, Montiel found it difficult to survive working at the minimum wage, even working 60 hours a week. But he had to persevere because he had bought a one-way ticket. Arrive early and leave late was Montiel’s mantra, because this gave him time to observe the cooks and learn to prep in the kitchen. This helped him climb up the ladder. “The dishwashing ended up launching my career!” laughed Montiel.

MY AMERICAN MOTHER Montiel’s advancement through the restaurant industry was swift, from I Coppi in the East Village to the UES’s Amaranth to Tappo on the LES. At Tappo he met his mentor, the chef Jody Williams. “Jody taught me about purchasing, portioning, prepping, and how to run a team,” said Montiel. After leaving Tappo, Williams displayed her faith in the young chef by bringing him to work alongside her at Giorgione and Gusto. “She was more than a mentor, she was like a mother to me, my American mother!” With Williams at his side, Montiel progressed to sous chef at Giorgione, and nine years later, he was appointed his first executive chef position at Gusto. CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN CUISINE In 2018, Montiel joined the Cantina Rooftop team as the executive chef, where he thrived because of his foundation in authentic Mexican recipes in tandem with his adopted Mediterranean techniques. With The Big Ass Taco a confidence molded by experience, he created a fresh contemporary Mexican cuisine, with a menu that rotates every three months. “For example, this summer we will feature a divine guacamole in a lava bowl, a variety of tacos and ceviche,” said Montiel. In a show of appreciation, the chef reopened one of his grandparents’ restaurants after they passed away. “I knew in my heart that I would reopen their restaurants in their honor.” Today Montiel lives with his wife, Eliana, and their two daughters, Ella and Elena. LA BOOM IN QUEENS In addition to his work at Cantina Rooftop, Montiel has prepared a delicious new menu for La Boom, which was one of the most popular Latin nightclubs in New York pre Covid-19. Now the Queens hot spot offers outside dinning at 56-15 Northern Boulevard in Woodside. Montiel is also helping his friend and the owner of Cantina Rooftop and La Boom, Pedro Zamora, with MECENAS, a nonprofit civil association that promotes Mexican art and culture and supports educational initiatives that help develop and integrate Mexican communities. mecenasusa.org Social Life

CRAIG SINGER ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR RETURNS TO HORROR ROOTS WITH NEW FLICK: 6:45 By Peter Elston

Craig Singer

C

raig Singer has directed award-winning indie flicks with the likes of Debbie Harry and Neil Patrick Harris (post the latter’s Doogie Howser period). He’s received an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Primetime Emmy Awards nomination and a Silver Telly Award. He’s launched cutting-edge tech companies that integrated film with the internet and social media. He spent almost a decade working as a creative VP for Disney. Now, he’s back in the director’s chair with a new edge-of-your-seat and eerily timely horror film: 6:45. “I made 6:45 with a wonderful, eclectic group of young talented artists about two weeks before the world turned upside down,” says Singer, whose cast includes Thomas G. Waites, Augie Duke, Michael Reed, Armen Garo, Remy Ma, and Hall of Fame boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. Singer’s longtime writing partner, Robert Dean Klein, penned the script. SocialLifeMagazine.com

“The film imagines what it would be like if the best days of your life suddenly turned into your very worst nightmare and you were forced to relive that same day again and again,” he says. “But the interesting thing is that the plot, which is sort of a Groundhog Day horror, is now very relevant to what we are all experiencing with Covid-19. We all experience the same bad day over and over again. We are all living a sort of 6:45.” With theaters closed and in-person events canceled, the film will make its debut this fall at live-streamed film festivals around the world. Singer first garnered attention at the Cannes Film Festival, where he showed his film A Good Night to Die, starring Michael Rapaport and Debbie Harry. His films also have been shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, Hollywood Film Festival, and LA TV Fest. He went on to make back-to-back films with Lions Gate, before launching his Tribeca-based tech firms, FanLib and My2Centences. When Bob Iger bought out these enterprises in 2008 for Disney, Singer agreed to join the company, developing and producing media for Disney Online Originals. He is also the co-creator of both Ollie Mongo and Cassi’s Poem, along with legendary Rugrats creator Arlene Klasky of Klasky Csupo fame. “I’m getting back to my creative roots with 6:45,” says Singer, who has four new films announced, including TAT, which explores the dark side of memorial tattoos. “I love how 6:45 echoes what people are really going through right now. None of us could have predicted this but it is incredible if not bittersweet timing.” Singer’s other films include Animal Room (Neil Patrick Harris, Matthew Lillard, Amanda Peet), Dead Dogs Lie (Tommy Flanagan, Peter Greene, Gary Stretch), Dark Ride (Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Patrick Renna, Alex Solowitz), and Perkins 14 (Patrick O’Kane, Richard Brake). u For more information on 6:45, visit imdb.com/6:45
