PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Nothing quite compares to a Hamptons summer. I would say the same goes for autumn. Come September, the Hamptons transforms into a different but equally vibrant version of itself. Events continue without pause, often focusing on a creative community that may not shine as brightly in beach-going months as it deserves. October brings the annual Hamptons International Film Festival, where a mix of established and emerging artists show us their talents. The festival is a highly enjoyable experience. Of course, there are the typical fall activities — apple picking, playing a round at Montauk Downs, or riding your bike through the less traveled Hamptons roads. But, out here, everything seems a little more special. Maybe it’s because eating a freshly picked apple while walking on a sun-drenched beach can’t be beat. In November and December, the Hamptons is still a great place to spend time with family for the holidays. Back in the city, Fashion Week is right around the corner. Since fashion informs Hamptons culture in such a pivotal way, catching a show will always keep you in the know. Manhattan offers endless possibilities for an active social life, but something about the Hamptons offers things I can’t describe in this letter. Trying to find out may define your life.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“To say it was a beautiful day would not begin to explain it. It was that day when the end of summer in-

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

tersects perfectly with the start of fall.” – Ann Patchett Summer is a feeling you can carry with you all year round. The warmth and long days get cooler and shorter, but the memories stay with you. I always suggest taking notes as well as pictures. So many now use Instagram as a type of diary or highlight reel of their lives, but there is something artificial about that if you ask me. You are at your most authentic when you are vulnerable and open. Put pen to paper and jot down your real thoughts, the lessons you learned, the challenges you helped yourself or others transcend. There is so much to learn and to live and to revisit. Who you are today isn’t who you will be a year from now. Of course your core stays the same, but, hopefully, you will evolve, and so it’s important to be able to revisit your thoughts from the past. I think this time of year is wonderful. The closing of the summer season means fall is right around the corner and what’s more beautiful than leaves turning color. I know I’m excited for sweater weather and apple picking. And if you need a little more summer, it’s always summer somewhere! Just remember to enjoy your days and be grateful, and share that with all those around you. Thank you for being a part of our summer. With love, Devorah

BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK TO THE FUTURE By Anthony Michael EDITOR’S PICKS Late August and early September were always my favorite time of the year when I was a kid in the ’burbs. Why? Back to school shopping. It was the time when my parents would splurge. That said, those were the days before the ’net. Hell, those were the days before The Gap, Banana Republic, and even decent outlets. They were the days of (I can barely type it . . . ) Chess King! Those days are over, and so is the summer, so get online and binge like you’re going back to school with our 2018 top picks.

Best Activewear Brand Ilana Kugel Koral

“I don’t believe a woman has to choose between being one or the other. She can be strong and gentle, powerful and humble, fierce and kind,” says Ilana Kugel, the founder and creative director for Koral. In 2014, she launched Koral’s first collection of edgy, feminine silhouettes made from a signature line of high-tech fabrics. Through a design-with-purpose approach, the lux-athleisure pieces balance technical innovation and iconic designs to fit the active lifestyle of today’s modern woman. Koral’s appreciation for balance was inspired. Born and raised in Brazil, she studied art and design at the Universadade Anhembi Morumbi before moving to Los Angeles in 2006. Living in an ultra-health-centric city, she learned to balance productivity and wellness as her lifestyle evolved. When she shopped for workout gear, she found racks of ill-fitting leggings and sports bras that felt neither feminine nor fashionable. “Living an extremely active lifestyle and being from Brazil where it is the norm for everyone to work out at the beach is what inspired my vision of a collection that merged swimwear and active wear,” Koral told mishbish.com.

Best Spin Workout Ruth Zukerman Flywheel Sports

A co-founder of SoulCycle and then Flywheel Sports, Zukerman is the author of Riding High: How I Kissed SoulCycle Goodbye, Co-Founded Flywheel, and Built the Life I Always Wanted. It has been said that Ruth Zukerman has single-handedly changed the indoor cycling genre. As the creative director of Flywheel Sports, she has taken fitness to a whole new level. It all began in the early 1980s when she was offered a job teaching aerobics on the Upper West Side. Years later she was introduced to spin classes, whose physical and mental aspects appealed to her, and which she credits in helping her through a divorce. When her instructor moved away, she took up teaching at the Reebok gym, where she worked for six years. By 2006, she had co-founded the wildly popular SoulCycle and then went on to open Flywheel Sports in 2010. What is the key to the success of her most recent business? Community. “By combining cycling with carefully curated music and setting up in a dimly lit room with exercise bikes positioned in a circle, Zukerman created the Flywheel experience,” writes ozy.com. “The intimate setting offers more than just a workout; it serves up a cycle-loving community.”

DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME: TREATING BAD BREATH By Jacob Puck

Dr. Steven Fox, one of the foremost authorities (and artisans) of veneers and prosthetics. Having partnered with the U.S. government and the American Dental Association to develop many of the products used in oral care today. . .

T

his summer, Social Life has come to know Dr. Steven Fox, one of the foremost authorities (and artisans) of veneers and prosthetics. Having partnered with the U.S. government and the American Dental Association to develop many of the products used in oral care today, Dr. Fox is not only an expert in his office, but is also a leader in R&D—whether or not you’ve ever visited his practice, it’s likely that his work has touched your life. His resume is stunningly impressive. When Dr. Fox was the chairman and CEO of Enamelon, Inc., his scientific advisory board included a Nobel Prize-winner in chemistry, the assistant U.S. surgeon general, and the dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. And then there’s Dr. Fox, himself. Dr. Fox is the only doctor in New York City who has served on the faculties of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the NYU School of Dentistry, served as an officer of Harvard University, and served on a tech board at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a leading expert on dentistry and is frequently tapped by every form of media for his knowledge and opinions. This month we tapped Dr. Fox for his opinion on a silent killer: chronic bad breath and bleeding gums. What we learned is that they might be symptoms of something else that could be very wrong, or could become much worse. “It’s entirely possible that the bacteria in the mouth can have

a very negative effect on the body, including stroke, heart attack, six types of cancer, dementia, and arthritis,” says Dr. Fox. “There can also be periodontal conditions and bone levels can decrease. If you have diabetes, the bacteria can make it worse, and diabetes can make the bacteria worse! People should really pay attention to this.” We wanted to know more. What is your role in reducing or eliminating bad breath? First, I check a person’s bacteria level by examining a sample of bacteria under a special-phase contrast microscope to view the density of harmful bacteria. Then, I treat bad breath with instruments and medication to create a normal balance of bacteria so patients don’t end up with problems potentially much worse than a foul odor. Bad breath is an indication that there may be something going on in the mouth that could lead to larger problems, so we want to get rid of it! What about bleeding gums? It’s the same thing: bleeding gums are caused by high concentrations of bacteria, and when it gets into the blood stream it can cause a whole host of problems. Our goal is to prevent that. It’s hard to tell someone they have bad breath. It can be for a layperson, yes. But if you detect it with someone, you should say something. Avoiding it could lead to significant health risks, or other risks. I don’t mind saying that I’ve saved jobs and relationships. Is it possible that someone simply has chronic bad breath and no other underlying problem? Generally, no. There’s something going on in there, and that’s where I come in. If I can’t immediately identify the issue, then I will recommend a specialist such as a gastroenterologist. What’s the good news? Very often with some dietary adjustments and oral treatment, we can get this resolved most of the time and stave off much worse problems down the road. NOVA LIFT FOR A NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT By Mary Ellen Lynch

W

illiam Greenberg, M.D., is the founder of Youtherapy Medical, with locations on the Upper East Side and in Westchester. His practice specializes in non-surgical anti-aging and aesthetic treatments for the face and body. In this article, I will discuss one of Dr. Greenberg’s favorite choices to lift sagging and slack skin on the face or neck without the risks, downtime, and cost of facelift surgery. This procedure can both turn back the clock for older patients and stop it for younger ones.

NOVA THREADS FOR A NOVA LIFT Nova Lift threads are made from a well-tested synthetic material, polydioxanone (PDO). These safe, absorbable threads can immediately lift and smooth skin, but the process also promotes collagen production, which results in continued improvement as the threads dissolve over four to six months. You have instant gratification as well as delayed gratification that continues for a couple of months. Results should last from 12 to 15 months. If necessary, this procedure is often combined with volumizing fillers when a loss of volume is also present, to create a more youthful look. I know this is true because Dr. Greenberg treated me with this technology twice, two years apart. During my second, more recent treatment, I received the latest generation of this technology, which Dr. Greenberg says works even better than the first. Dr. Greenberg is, in fact, among the first physicians to be trained in this technology. He is not only a pioneer in its use, but he is also associated with its innovations, and he is a physician-teacher who instructs others in this technology’s best practices. In less than an hour, Dr. Greenberg tightened my slack jaw line and eliminated my marionette lines (those vertical lines that descended from the corners of my mouth). I actually first went to him expecting a filler for those lines, but Dr. Greenberg said he could offer me something better and longer-lasting. And he did—and more!

HOW IT WORKS Dr. Greenberg studied my face, pulling my skin this way and that to determine the exact direction the threads should follow for the optimal result. Next, he drew lines on my face that mapped where he’d route the actual threads under my skin. Then he gave me a few quick shots to numb my facial tissues (much like the dentist does before a procedure). Dr. Greenberg has a range of threads to choose from (various lengths and gauges; smooth or barbed), which are pre-loaded onto a thin needle. For me, Dr. Greenberg chose six, 4-inch, 18-gauge, barbed threads—three for each side of my face. Starting on the lower part of my face, in front of my ear, he injected the thread downward toward my chin. As he removed the needle, the barbed thread gripped my tissue just below the surface of my skin, enabling Dr. Greenberg to reposition my skin upward and outward. He did this two more times, each time a little closer to my jaw. Then he did the same on the other side. He also injected a few short threads vertically, around my jaw, to promote collagen production. And that was that. My face was a bit sore that night and in the morning, but Advil was all I needed. Dr. Greenberg asks a patient to return in two months at no extra cost for a couple of extra touch-up threads, which Dr. Greenberg says helps prolong the lift. Dr. Greenberg’s practice is warm and welcoming. He and his staff never make you feel rushed. You also won’t be pressured into procedures or treatments or steered toward buying any of the potions and cosmeceuticals, including Youtherapy Medical proprietary products, which are displayed in the chic lounge. GETTING PERSONAL WITH DR . RAMIN TABIB, NYC SMILE DESIGN By Jacob Puck

W

hat’s the definition of a perfect smile? How has technology changed dentistry? And, why would Dr. Ramin Tabib, one of Manhattan’s most renowned cosmetic dentists, ever want to pursue a career as a short order cook? As Social Life wraps another season, we had one more conversation with Dr. Tabib for the 411 on some technical as well as some personal reflections. How has cosmetic dentistry changed from when you began your practice? For one thing, there have been tremendous advances in how we bond porcelain veneers and crowns to teeth. We can now create a much stronger bond, which increases longevity and also allows for minimal preparation of teeth. Additionally, there have been advances in the strength of porcelains as well as in making them more realistic and lifelike. There has been a consumer- as well as dentist-driven push to make cosmetic dentistry more natural and, at the same time, more beautiful. To what do you attribute the change? Rapidly evolving technology. While it has allowed us to find exciting new solutions to our patients’ needs, it has also required us to be vigilant in responding to an excess of fads: to thoughtfully evaluate procedures before jumping the gun. Dentistry is benefiting enormously from digital technology and automation. For instance, we now can see X-rays of teeth in three dimensions for better diagnosis. And we are able to scan teeth quickly and accurately instead of having to fill the mouth with goopy material to make an impression. One of the keys to your success is your collaboration with your wife, Dr. Elisa Mello. Do you ever disagree about anything? I’m not sure I’d call it disagreement—it’s more like having differences of opinion. We have complementary strengths in dentistry and complementary personalities; they lead us naturally to look at issues from different points of view, and help us form broader, more thorough opinions. This has proven to be most valuable, leading to the best possible results for our patients. What is your definition of a perfect smile? The perfect smile is unique to each patient, complementing their face and natural expression. It should add light to the face, but not be so bright that it’s the only thing you see. A perfect smile should not walk into a room before the person does. You want to enhance the facial features and expressions, to harmonize with them, but not to overshadow the whole picture.

What is the most important thing someone can do to maintain a great smile besides brushing and flossing regularly? Have regular checkups and professional cleanings and —equally important—maintain a diet that promotes dental health and makes teeth resistant to decay. Stay away from sodas and sports drinks (particularly those containing sugar). They are extremely acidic and will melt away the enamel of the teeth over time. If you hadn’t become a dentist, what would you be? I’d probably be looking for a career where I could express my creativity. I was always fascinated by architecture, and also love comedy and cooking. So maybe a short order cook. A really funny short-order cook. In a kitchen of my own design, of course. LUXURY SCENTS THE WORLD OF MICHAEL DEHN’S HIGH-END FRAGRANCES By Anthony Michael

M

ichael Dehn was quite literally born into the fragrance industry. He is a fifth-generation prodigy of a scent-driven family. Michael’s great-great grandparents started the family legacy when they opened Dehn’s Flowers in Saratoga Springs, a flower shop still in operation today. Fast forward to Michael, who created the luxury fragrance brand Gibson & Dehn. Borrowing from 125 years of family experience in botanicals, scent development, and business expertise, his success is unsurprising. Inspired by his childhood surroundings, experiences in landscape design, and natural resources, Dehn’s line of luxury candles and diffusers are evocative of his youth in Saratoga Springs. Saratoga-inspired scents, such as Regatta, Saratoga, and Beekman Street, were instant successes and quickly adopted by retailers across the country. It wasn’t long until his olfactory and business acumen led him to develop private-label fragrances for some of the world’s most prestigious brands, including The Plaza Hotel, Harry Winston, Cartier, Hilton, and SEED, meaning you may be well aware of Dehn’s creations without ever having heard of him.

Inspiration for his private label offerings came from many places for Michael, who had previously worked as the North American brand manager for British Airways’ Concorde. There he was responsible for conceptualizing the Concorde Terrace Lounge in North America, which led to the realization that atmosphere can be greatly improved and distinguished through scent. In creating private-label fragrance, Michael “wanted people to walk into a place, like a hotel, and through scent remember that they had been there before.” To him, it was about developing longstanding familiarities revolving around scent. Gibson & Dehn’s expansion into private-label scents came about naturally; the brand offers full-service product development supported through a white glove client experience. Michael works with his clients from inspiration to completed product, ensuring clear delivery of their vision by creating complex blends of supreme fragrance oils set within a brand-identifiable vessel. “The most important part of creating private-label candles is to create a distinct, signature scent for the brand. This is especially important for hotels,” Michael said, “as it has to be unique and able to extend throughout the room and to its other amenities.” “Everyone wants to own luxury, but few want to pay for it,” Michael stated in reference to his dedication to creating affordable and high-end scents. The candle industry was recently valued at $4.2 billion, perhaps because of the customarily high price-point, but due to his family’s five generations of fragrance entrepreneurship, Gibson & Dehn’s retail offerings are reasonably priced. As for the future of his namesake brand, Michael says he will continue to produce his ozone scents “reflective of winds, oceans and the outdoors,” while also releasing masculine fragrances of amber, sandalwood, and cedar. The candle market has had a long, upward trajectory, and Michael’s family history and dedication to craft ensure that the Gibson & Dehn brand will lead the pack. As cosmetic surgery is at an all time high, one plastic surgeon has taken these procedures to a new level. Celebrity Plastic Surgeon Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S. uses technology to obtain the best results. Modern Mommy Makeover

If childbirth has made some changes to your body that you would like to correct, the Modern Mommy Makeover provides the right combination of Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Breast Augmentation, with or without a Breast Lift and Vaginal Rejuvenation to help restore your prepregnancy shape. Dr. Greenberg uses his Rapid Recovery System to have you looking your best in the shortest amount of time possible. The Modern Mommy Makeover is a highly individualized plan created to meet each patient’s specific needs and aesthetic goals. A Greenberg Modern Mommy Makeover can consist of both surgical and non-surgical procedures to address concerns of the breasts, abdomen, arms, and thighs. Dr. Greenberg performs procedures such as Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift and Breast Reduction surgical procedures to re-shape the breast tissue as well as a tummy tuck and liposuction to restore the abdominal area closer to its pre-pregnancy contour. Minimally invasive treatments to treat stubborn cellulite such as Cellfina or Cellulaze are combined to create a smoother silhouette. Surgical and non-surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation are performed to restore and rejuvenate the delicate area of a woman’s intimate region with minimal downtime and recovery. In addition to these body contouring and enhancement procedures, both surgical/non-surgical facial treatment options such as injectables and/or laser procedures can be added to the customized plan for a complete and polished look.

Not Just for the Girls… Male Treatments

In the past, cosmetic surgery procedures were primarily for women. However, with the great advances and opportunities for men of all ages to achieve the physique they have always imagined, more of our patients are seeking male procedures. Dr. Greenberg can help you achieve a tighter abdomen, reduce the fatty pockets on your chest, give you hair transplants, and much more. Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States, and Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg has performed thousands of procedures over the past 22 years. Using only the latest technology, he strives to achieve the best in body contouring by using a combination of techniques which are customized to each patient to ensure optimal results. Male breast over development (gynecomastia) affects 40 – 60% of all men and the cause is often unknown. Dr. Greenberg has extensive experience in male breast reduction and will treat you with sensitivity and customize a procedure tailored to fit your body contour. Male Breast Reduction Surgery can help to achieve a flat, firm, tightened look. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can perform male breast reduction surgery to help you regain confidence by making your chest appear flatter and more contoured.

Using a fusion of ground breaking technology, you can achieve the look you are striving for with minimal to zero downtime.

Hair restoration or hair transplants are sought by men when age, hormones or heredity causes male pattern baldness, a permanent thinning and/or loss of hair. Dr. Greenberg uses NeoGraft the first and only Class One FDA Listed automated medical system for hair restoration. This system harvests, collects, and implants individual follicular grafts for a natural look. In follicular unit micrografting, Dr. Greenberg will take individual follicular units from the back of your scalp and transplant them to the balding or thinning areas in the front. Once the follicular units are transplanted, they will continue to grow naturally. This hair restoration procedure is painless, takes just a couple of hours to complete.

Facelift

Unfortunately, nothing stops the aging process – not even a facelift, but a facelift can turn back the aging process by 10 years. Facelifts improve the visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening muscles and removing extra sagging skin from the face and neck. Facelifts will correct and tighten both the skin and deeper muscular layers of the face. Facelift surgery can make you look younger, but will not give you a totally different look. Dr. Greenberg has perfected the art of the facelift and has performed thousands of facelift procedures. Using the most advanced techniques, Dr. Greenberg restores facial contour with minimal swelling and bruising resulting in a natural outcome.

Eyelid Surgery

The eyelids are often the telling sign of a person’s age. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg uses state-of-the-art technology and lasers to correct droopy upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes. As we age, we begin to develop droop or “puffy” eyelids. This process starts in the 30’s and 40’s and progresses with the aging process. These changes usually occur because over the years, the eyelid skin thins, loses tone, and becomes more susceptible to gravity. The fat pockets gradually herniate forward which can cause bags in both the upper and lower eyelid. As you age, your eyes look more baggy and tired. Expect a refreshed and rejuvenated look with natural results where everyone will notice but no one will know.

Facial Fat Transfer

Over time, aging and environmental factors can impact the appearance of the face, resulting in lost volume and reduced definition. A facial fat transfer, also called fat grafting or fat injection, can restore a more youthful complexion, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and improving contour. It is a simple and safe procedure, during which Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can transfer fat cells from one area of your body to another. When applied to the face, this procedure can refine and enhance the lips, cheeks, jaw, eyebrows, under-eye area and forehead for natural-looking results. Since this procedure uses fat from your own body, there is a reduced risk of infection and complications. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can design a treatment plan tailored to your goals and natural features.

Non-Invasive Treatments

Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery offers a fleet of cutting-edge lasers and high-tech devices to ensure a rejuvenated and more youthful look. Treatments such as Ultherapy lift and tighten the neck, chin and brow as well as remove lines and wrinkles on the chest. Coolsculpting and Sculpsure are nonsurgical body contouring treatments performed when diet and exercise are not providing the ultimate look you are working so hard to achieve. Our advanced Laser Hair Removal device treats the entire body in 20 minutes without the discomfort and time associated with older devices. Miradry reduces excessive underarm sweating, and is a lasting solution that can make embarrassing sweat a thing of the past.

Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg has continually been recognized as one of the Best Cosmetic Surgeons* in New York and is frequently called upon by various media outlets for his plastic surgery expertise. He is the author of the book A Little Nip, A Little Tuck, Dr. Greenberg hosts New York’s only two Cosmetic Surgery Radio Shows, “Nip Tuck Saturday’s with Dr. Stephen T. HAIR REJUVENATION AND TRANSPLANT EXPERT By Jacob Puck

I

t’s important to be an informed consumer. If you’ve been a loyal reader of Social Life this summer, you now know a lot about Keith R. Durante, M.D., and his medical and surgical treatment for managing hair loss, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and even beards. You’ve learned about his passion for philanthropy and the tragic circumstances that steered Dr. Durante to a life led with greater purpose. His soonto-be-published memoir is about his life-changing experiences and the power of forgiveness. Dr. Durante has been featured in each of our summer issues, which are online at sociallifemagazine.com. Dr. Durante is a highly experienced, fellowship-trained micro-vascular surgeon who decided to parlay his experience into another medical discipline that requires micro-surgery: hair transplants. He wanted to help people live their lives to their fullest in a new way: hair loss management and hair transplants for both men and women—a field that also requires aesthetic vision. What are some common treatments for hair-loss management? It could be as simple as lifestyle changes, specific hair vitamin therapy, or topical medications. Among the more common procedures are injections of PRP (platelet rich plasma) in conjunction with LLLT (low-level laser therapy), both of which stimulate hair follicles and improve blood circulation in the treated area, encouraging hair growth. Hair restoration can often be done with no IV’s, no scars, no pain or bleeding, allowing you to get back to your routine in a matter of days. Results depend on the cause, site, and severity of hair loss. I can often help patients to the point where their situation is tolerable for them. And for others I can achieve results that don’t indicate there was ever any hair loss. Is it true the average person waits five to seven years before getting a transplant because of misinformation and anxiety, which can actually lead to psychological depression? Yes, and men and women need to know this is a treatable problem that can be corrected in a doctor’s office and may not even require surgery, but only medical management. A lot of patients don’t know this and suffer the same type of depression they might experience from a much more serious medical diagnosis. What’s on the horizon for hair-loss management? The treatment of hair loss has really been revolutionized and is constantly evolving. We already can avoid scars and bloody procedures, but we also better understand the causes of hair loss. There is a lot of biology involved in hair management and the treatment protocol is

different for each patient. Procedures are always getting better, and it’s a bright future. Personally, I continue to evolve, too. If you want to treat patients differently, you need to think differently. That’s what I do—treat the cause before addressing the effect, and how I will always make sure that I am ahead of the curve when it comes to hair loss management. Hair transplantation has evolved into a minimally invasive, one and done procedure with a beautiful, natural look and a change that will last a lifetime. It will be my privilege to evaluate you at my new state-of-the art facility on Fifth Avenue. Thank you, readers and Social Life’s great staff for a signature summer! Keith R. REVEALING A HOLLYWOOD SECRET By Cassandra Thompson

W

orld-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. John Mesa uses his love for design to sculpt beautiful faces. Initially hoping to become an architect, Dr. Mesa chose to go into the medical field because he could combine his love of form with his passion for biology and working with people. The result? An incredible opportunity for patients who want the chiseled V-shaped face he has perfected. For a long time, actresses, singers, and even plus-sized models like Ashley Graham somehow magically achieved the chiseled face so many women crave. Unlike our bodies, we can’t work out our cheeks and jawline at the gym. So how did so many actresses like J.Lo and Angelina Jolie get such an incredible, chiseled look? After speaking to several beauty insiders, I learned about buccal fat removal. And after doing a lot of research and talking to friends, I heard about Dr. Mesa. I chose to meet with Dr. Mesa because his before-and-after images floored me. As a plastic surgeon, his results are subtle, yet they make a dramatic and beautiful difference for the patient. Dr. Mesa informed me that the solution to chubby cheeks is a well-kept Hollywood secret, one that may explain the reason Bella Hadid and Kim Kardashian have faces that once looked soft and now look tight and chiseled. According to Dr. Mesa, the procedure itself is straightforward, but if performed by the wrong doctor, the consequences can be serious. The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia, and the patient is awake during the surgery. For those like me who are afraid of general anesthesia, this is ideal. All a patient has to do is open his or her mouth so that Dr. Mesa can create tiny incisions on the inside of the cheeks to remove the perfect amount of fat. Cheeks are not all Dr. Mesa works on during the procedure.

He really goes the extra mile to cater to each person’s individual goal. If needed, he will perform liposuction on the neck and chin to achieve a chiseled jawline. And, if requested, he will add fillers to create sexy high cheekbones. After the procedure the downtime is minimal. Dr. Mesa estimates that 90% of his patients experience only one or two days of swelling. The other 10% have four or five days of swelling. Dr. Mesa says, “Patients tell me that they begin to experience the final results between the third and the fourth week.” According to my friend who told me about Dr. Mesa, she saw results in just ten days. As amazing as this procedure sounds, Dr. Mesa did warn me Social Life

that “Buccal fat removal is not an easy procedure. An inexperienced doctor can really damage the face. They can cause facial paralysis or cut one of the salivary ducts in your cheek. Cutting the salivary duct would result in facial swelling for several months.” That’s one of the reasons I felt it was important to write this article and tell people about this experienced and trusted doctor. It’s important to empower people with choices to make the right decision for themselves. After meeting Dr. Mesa and moving forward with buccal fat removal, I talk about it all the time. Recently, I met someone in the Hamptons who also had the same procedure with Dr. Mesa. We shared stories about this doctor, who is SocialLifeMagazine.com

MARISA HOCHBERG’S MECCA OF WELLNESS AT THE SURF LODGE By Lizabeth Zindel

W

ith her close connection to Montauk and her own powerful journey with health and fitness, Marisa Hochberg shines as the superstar director of The Surf Lodge’s new Wellness Program. While growing up on the Upper East Side, Marisa Hochberg spent her summers in Montauk with her family. “There is something about Montauk . . . the air, the beaches, the people, the vibes, the bucolic setting that sets it apart in the Hamptons. When I get to Montauk I take a deep breath, and even with my eyes closed I know I am here,” Hochberg said. As the wellness director of the iconic restaurant and hotel, Hochberg has introduced an amazing comprehensive take on wellness for the individual looking to start a new routine, stay healthy while traveling, or gain advice from experts. The program caters to people of all ages and even has some mommyand-me wellness events slated for the rest of summer 2018. “I saw that The Surf Lodge was the destination for music, art, and cultural events out East. Celebrities and talents would come all the way to Montauk to go to The Surf Lodge for curated programming, and I thought Why can’t we do this for health and wellness?” Hochberg said. She approached the founder of The Surf Lodge, Jayma Cardoso, who loved the idea. “We have really built out a SocialLifeMagazine.com

strong wellness program that we hope to take along with The Surf Lodge brand to our new locations as we expand,” said Hochberg. This summer, Hochberg curated a sensational slate of activities, which includes classes from leading wellness studios and instructors in the fitness space, ranging from yoga to highintensity cardio and boxing. She has also organized a series of impactful talks to educate people and inspire them to lead healthier lives. This summer’s motivational speakers included Max Lugavere, the author of Genius Foods, Bobbi Brown, Dr. Frank Lipman, Deepak Chopra, and Esther Perel. “Ten years ago, I didn’t even try to go to The Surf Lodge because I was a size 14/16,” Hochberg admitted. “On my own, through a healthy diet and exercise, I lost 75 pounds and have kept that weight off since,” she said. Hochberg lost most of her weight in the South Fork. “Montauk sort of became like my best friend, cheering me along every step of the way,” she said. “If anyone ever told me when I was struggling with weight loss that I would be in the doors at The Surf Lodge, let alone directing its wellness program, and having worked with the wellness brands that I have, I would have called them crazy. Never give up on your goals and dreams,” she said.

ALWAYS LEAD WITH LOVE WAITING ONLINE FOR LOVE By L.A. Dawson

o stay enlightened as the seasons change, please take the time to nourish all of you. When the mind, body, and soul are acknowledged together, evolution occurs in the ways we view the world. Being open to change and realizing that we are never too old to learn allows us to be present and aware. Doing this can open your heart to receiving love. And love is paramount to good health. I wrote Waiting Online for Love as an introduction to the online dating world, with a sprinkling of tips for keeping true to yourself. Staying true is important because our character, integrity, and honesty are what define us to ourselves and others. Online dating can be exciting and filled with promise. We all can use the promise of hope. Ultimately, online dating does work for many people. I enjoyed writing Waiting Online for Love because it made me look at other people’s habits and happiness factors. Happiness is a choice. But often it is easier to blame someone’s reaction to us than to blame our own thoughts and actions. I am always trying to keep my thoughts and words positive so that my actions are positive. If not, my positive goals will be cancelled by negative thoughts. This is not the legacy I seek. Love is the ultimate goal for many of us. The silver lining when writing about online dating is the personal discovery that I share with my readers. We all walk in different “love shoes,” but most of us want to be on the receiving end of true love. As I delved into the subject, I learned so much about the similarities in everyone’s journey.

Photography by Linda Stark, starkstudionj.com

If we are all more alike than we think, than finding a romantic relationship should not be difficult or painful. Allowing ourselves to be shut off from love because of a bad experience will absolutely not serve us in finding self-awareness. Being self-aware is like knowing our “love temperature” at any given moment. There is no fail-proof plan for finding love online. Your experience will be shaped by the way you approach it. Your own positivity can become your compass in this frenetic world. Seek the wonders of the moment with each new experience. w Join me on this journey of love with a signed copy of

TRANSITIONING OUT OF SUMMER By Stacey Griffith

T

he time has almost come to deflate your Funboy floats, pack up your summer clothes, and pull out your Cucinelli cashmere. Ugh, it’s my least favorite moment of the year when beach season ends. We all thrive in the sun, so how do we continue the magic of summer into the next three seasons? I have some ideas. First, summer isn’t reeeeeally over until the 22nd of September, so there’s no need to end the vibe just yet. I think if we empty the farm stands of their stock and bring it back to the city for a few last get-togethers it may help. If you have an outdoor space back home, invite friends over on the weekends and have a couple of last hurrahs. Go out with a bang back home. It’s also a great time for the kids to hang out with their pals before re-entering the land of learning! End of summer also becomes the quiet time for most amusement parks. Gather your gaggle of girls and head to the rollercoasters. A nice thrill of serotonin and one last funnel cake won’t hurt a girl, and the lines will be short. If coasters aren’t your jam, then maybe one last spa day together to rev up your self-care vibration to deal with the early mornings of breakfast-making and late-night homework sessions.

Try to squeeze in as much outdoor activity as you can before daylight ends early. Power walk the parks. Go on a nature hike a couple of more times. Maybe take a drive to the Hudson Valley for some antique shopping, and hit up the cheese store! If you have the time, plan a trip or two to the Hamptons. Take advantage of the calm vibes that resonate with the end of summer. It really is a beautiful time of year. Most of the SoulCycle studios are still open out East, so finish up that last piece of your fitness goal by doubling up on classes, and maybe even stopping in for that hot yoga class you never made time to do. Many boat rentals are still available, so plan a boat trip to say goodbye to the Atlantic until next summer! The art of seasonal transition is in your attitude. Sign up for a class, take a new position with a charity you are involved in, and plan your active life into your agenda as if it is as important as your career. The healthier you is the better you. Everyone benefits from that version of who you are. Mental clarity is a key component to living the next three seasons to the fullest. Don’t let the end of summer get you down. Instead plan, plan, plan to eat smart, sleep smart, train smart, and love smart! See you on the flip side . . . Social Life

HELPS BRING HOPE TO SOUTHAMPTON

By Carlos Lacayo

Husband-and-wife duo Jamie and George Hess spend their days working high-powered jobs in lifestyle PR and music marketing respectively, but share a passion for fitness that drives their relationship. George proposed to Jamie on a treadmill at Barry’s Boot Camp, and from there, they began documenting their fitness journey on social media, including their adventures with their three-year-old son, Mason. They share daily #fitspo on their @NYCfitfam Instagram account, and were named one of the “7 Fittest Couples on Instagram” by Women’s Health.

On a beautiful August morning, 515 participants, including CBS’s Blue Bloods star Lorraine Bracco, Wilson, and Jenny and John Paulson, gathered at the starting line of Hope for Depression Research Fo u n d a t i o n ’s (HDRF) third annual Walk of Hope + 5K Run to Defeat Depression. The high-energy crowd set out at 9am to complete a 5K course around Lake Agawam and raised more than $250,000 for advanced depression research. HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss said, “Depression is the number-one reason in the world for disability and the leading cause of suicide. We want people to know there is help, and we need more research if we are going to turn the tide on depression and suicide in this country.” This year, the Walk of Hope + 5K Run was heralded by the Week of Hope, a Southampton village-wide effort in to raise mental health awareness. More than 90 stores “turned yellow” by placing two-foot wide yellow statement balloons by their front doors symbolizing their hope and commitment to reducing the staggering statistics of depression. The Walk of Hope + 5K Run signals the lead-in to the 11th Annual Luncheon Seminar to be held on November 6th, 2018. The event will focus on “Brain Health and Wellness – the Science of Self Care,” and will honor public figures speaking out about depression and salute the research progress of HDRF’s acclaimed team of world-renowned neuroscientists. ON BODY REJUVENATION

ON FACIAL REJUVENATION

What is the solution for saggy fat arms? Bat wings? In the past, the only solution for loose skin on the arms was a procedure called brachioplasty. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, often in the hospital. Although it provides excellent results, it entails a lengthy scar down the arm that patients hate. We are now excited to be able to use radio frequency (RF) technology to “shrink wrap” the arm by tightening the skin and melting the fat without the lengthy scars of a brachioplasty. In addition, we are able to sculpt the arm at the same time in order to make the muscles show and give the appearance of working out. So in essence a scarless (two small incisions) arm lift. What is the name of this procedure and does it also work on other parts of the body? The procedure is called Bodytite (scarless arm lift) and the maker of the equipment is InMode. It can be done in any area of the body where there is fat, with or without loose skin. For example, inner thighs, knees, and love handles are common areas. It is performed under local anesthesia in the office and is the first technology that is able to tighten skin up to 40% in one session. What is the downtime for Bodytite arm sculpting? Downtime is 48 hours with results at six weeks. The tightening continues for up to one year due to the latent heat effect of the RF energy. So with time a person’s arms show markedly improved results. Can Bodytite be used on a woman’s tummy after having children? Depending on how loose a patient’s skin is after child-bearing, Bodytite can be a solution for those women who don’t want a tummy tuck with the accompanying lengthy scar and the downtime. The ability to offer this new solution to patients today, that was not available in the past, is what gets us excited as plastic surgeons, as our mantra should always be “innovate.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

What is Embrace RF and how is it different from a facelift? Embrace RF is a new breakthrough technology that utilizes radio frequency (RF) waves to tighten skin and melt fat. It is not a substitute for a facelift as it specifically addresses the lower one-third of the face and neck. It works well for patients who may not be ready for a facelift (sagging not bad enough, too young) and yet exhibit early signs of aging, such as jowls and loose neck skin. Where is it performed and how long does it last? Embrace RF is performed in an office setting under local anesthesia. It is a one-time procedure that takes about 45 minutes. The results can last anywhere from four to five years, depending on the patient’s skin quality. We are working closely with the technology as it also has potential for patients who have already had a facelift and exhibit early signs of recurrence of jowling or neck looseness. Currently this patient group is not ready for another facelift as it still may be early for a repeat procedure, so this might be a great solution for them. What is the downtime? Embrace RF belongs to the category of minimally invasive procedures. So a patient can obtain very good results without having to undergo a major procedure under general anesthesia with a lengthy downtime. The recovery for Embrace is on average 48 hours with final results seen at six weeks. As the skin continues to tighten due to the RF energy, patients will continue to see results for up to one year.

ANNA AVALIANI, M.D. THE LASER QUEEN OF PARK AVENUE By Frances Gormley Photography By Marsin Mogielski

Anna Avaliani, M.D., is medical royalty when it comes to noninvasive cosmetic surgery. Her Upper East Side bespoke practice offers the best and latest in FDA-approved lasers and other technologies to smooth, tighten, re-shape, contour, and rejuvenate.

PATIENT ROSTER A loyal clientele is the hallmark of Dr. Avaliani’s practice. She treats a growing number of physicians; celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, and entertainment; and corporate executives. It’s worth noting that many of Dr. Avaliani’s patients have been referred to her by other satisfied patients. Her younger patients start preventive procedures like Botox and fillers in their mid-twenties. These sorts of treatments help skin retain its natural youthfulness—an insurance against wrinkling and sagging. It’s possible to postpone indefinitely the need for invasive plastic surgery. This is especially true because this Golden Age of cosmetic science will continue to invent miracle treatments. Dr. Avaliani’s middle-aged and older patients benefit from technologies and treatments that make them look years younger, and, with proper touch-ups, stay that way for a long time. PHILOSOPHY

TREATMENTS

Dr. Avaliani believes in a true physician-patient relationship, one that meets the standards of her medical training and board certifications as well as her own moral compass. Her patients, who are remarkably loyal, seem to understand this and appreciate her level of care and how well she connects to them. “I believe in the natural look and aging gracefully,” she says. This means that Dr. Avaliani will recommend only treatments that she believes will meet a patient’s expectations. She listens carefully to what patients envision for themselves and what procedures they mention on their own. Sometimes she might suggest a treatment that is different from what a patient asks for. Sometimes she might have to gently tell a patient that an expectation is unrealistic.

If a noninvasive cosmetic procedure exists that has been cleared by the FDA and has evidence to support its efficacy and safety, Dr. Avaliani will offer it to her patients. She uses the latest models with the latest attachments for devices in her practice. Facial cosmetic treatments and body-contouring are the most commonly requested procedures. Dr. Avaliani can successfully treat just about every body part, including tightening vaginal walls with radio-frequency, eliminating gummy smiles with Botox or Dysport, and using fillers to minimize prominent veins and the thin skin of aging hands. If you visit Dr. Avaliani’s website (dravaliani.com), you’ll see a menu of treatable body parts and treatment options, including a variety of lasers, radio-frequency and ultrasound devices, and a complete range of fillers to smooth, contour, plump, and reshape. Details are below about the most common procedures Dr. Avaliani performs in the suites of her beautiful office.

Her latest honor is the Elite SculpSure of North America award for providing best patient results and the most treatments performed in the United States and Canada combined—more than 5,000 since 2016.

SCIENCE & ART Dr. Avaliani’s expertise results from her solid medical education and credentialing combined with her artistic judgment and skill. Dr. Avaliani has an artist’s eye and vision, which inform her treatment design for each patient. This is critically important because lasers, other devices, and injectable products are only tools. It is Dr. Avaliani who controls the variables for each device or product. For example, devices may have different attachments and intensities, and Dr. Avaliani is expert in the nuances of operating and timing various devices. Dr. Avaliani is also expert in choosing the best device. Fillers require a professional knowledge of anatomy for safe and natural results. It is professional judgment and skill that ultimately determine the result of any procedure. SocialLifeMagazine.com

One and Only Triple Body Center in the Country SculpSure + CoolSculpting + EMSCULPT: BURN FAT & BUILD MUSCLE! Achieving a dream body is possible without surgery. Dr. Avaliani is a true expert in noninvasive total body contouring and her center offers all of the latest FDA-approved technology to eliminate stubborn fat and help build and tone muscle. The right expertise and the right tools are extremely important. Dr. Avaliani is the only Elite SculpSure Provider in North America. Her practice is the only center in NY that offers dual SculpSure machines and is the first to offer SculpSure Submental, the newest SculpSure applicator to treat under-chin fat. She has been providing FDA-approved SculpSure treatments since 2016, and she quickly parlayed her body-contouring skills into the No. 1 SculpSure practice in the world. She chose SculpSure as her preferred treatment for fat reduction after doing extensive research. She says SculpSure does much more than destroy fat cells; it can improve cellulite as well as treat never-before-treated areas such as inner knees or a back hump. And she says she has never had uneven results. With two SculpSure machines she can double the body area being treated in one 25-minute session or treat couples or two friends who come together. There is little to no discomfort during the procedure and zero downtime. SculpSure is the only total body-contouring device on the market to treat body and chin fat at once. The body applicators can be used on the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, bra rolls, under-butt rolls, knee-fat pads, and more.

Two to three treatments per area, four to six weeks apart, is the norm. Dr. Avaliani’s body-contouring expertise is heightened with the addition of the latest model of 2018 CoolSculpting technology with all applicators. She added CoolScupting because so many people came in asking for it. She can now offer her patients a trifecta procedure when she combines SculpSure and CoolSculpting at the same time. Both technologies allow Dr. Avaliani creativity in how she handles different body types, body parts, and fat density. Three machines equal a triple win. EMSCULPT is the new noninvasive mommy make-over. Dr. Avaliani’s was the first center in the country to offer EMSCULPT, which is the world’s first and only HIFEM technology (high-intensity focused electro-magnetic energy) to help build and tone muscle in areas such as the abdomen and buttocks. One 30-minute session is equivalent to 20,000 abdominal crunches or 20,000 squats. You don’t have to be a mommy to benefit from EMSCULPT! It works great for all women and men.

ULTHERAPY & TEMPSURE FOR SKIN TIGHTENING The evidence continues to grow for Ultherapy, an approved ultrasound technology that tightens and lifts skin by promoting the production of collagen. Only one treatment is usually necessary to lift skin over two to three months, for results lasting up to two years. Ultherapy is a face-lift alternative, and it can also be used to tighten and smooth the neck, brows, décolletage, arms, thighs, and abdomen. TempSure ENVI is a totally painless radio-frequency (RF) technology that became available only in 2018. It’s the world’s first full-body skin tightening system. Its various applicators can be used to tighten eyelids, elbows, and even vaginas. Plus, it works on cellulite. Unlike other technologies, TempSure ENVI works equally well on all skin colors and skin types. RF is a heat technology, but unlike previous RF devices, TempSure is exactingly precise about delivering focused heat to tissue for a specified time.

PICOSURE FOCUS FOR SKIN RENEWAL “This revolutionary treatment to rejuvenate skin is one of my absolute favorites,” says Dr. Avaliani. This fast, effective treatment is the gold standard for dark spots, sun spots, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, surgical scars, stretch marks, and more—in less than 15 minutes and with virtually no downtime. “Pico” derives from “picosecond,” which is one trillionth of a second. PicoSure delivers picosecond bursts of energy, not

heat like other lasers, to gently target and more effectively eliminate problem areas without harming surrounding tissue. PicoSure has trademarked the term Skin Cell Activation, which is a way of describing how PicoSure works. It literally activates cells to produce important proteins that signal other cells to begin a healing response. Usually one to five treatments can deliver PicoSure’s magic.

Dr. Avaliani may be a laser queen, but it is her patients who receive the royal treatment from Dr. Avaliani and her caring staff. CHARLIE WEBER HOLLYWOOD’S HOTTEST COMMODITY By Christine Montanti Photography by Ben Miller & ABC/Craig Sjodin

Photography by ABC/Craig Sjodin

From the moment small town Missouri native Charlie Weber moved to New York and set his heart on the pursuit of acting, his career skyrocketed: first working as a model, then steadily becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest actors; currently he remains at the top of his game with both gratitude and humility. The star of ABC’s suspenseful drama series, How to Get Away with Murder, plays the pivotal role of Frank Delfino, the mysterious bad boy and legal associate on the network’s scandalous show where lawyers and law students alike have darker secrets than the clients they are defending. Viewers can’t seem to get enough of the indisputably genuine actor whose trendsetting style and handsome demeanor come to life again for the fifth season when this shocking TV series premieres Thursday, September 27th at 10/9 C. The American actor got his start in front of the camera modeling for Abercrombie & Fitch’s catalog and later by posing for iconic Ralph Lauren advertising campaigns photographed by the legendary fashion photographer, Bruce Weber. Acting was in Charlie Weber’s blood, and in no time he was off to Los Angles where he landed roles in the film Broken Hearts Club, the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and all three CSI: Crime Scene Investigation shows. On ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, Weber plays opposite Viola Davis who portrays Annalise Keeting, a powerful criminal defense lawyer and professor of law, who selects a group of students to intern at her firm and who are immediately involved in a murder. As for what it’s like working with the critically acclaimed Emmy Award winning actress, the former model reveals, “In the beginning you’re sort of awestruck by the fact of who is across from you. But over time, Viola has become a friend and a colleague and a mentor in a lot of ways—as far as acting is concerned. Now she’s just like my friend, “V”, and she is this warm, cool, funny person, and we just talk about our kids and what’s going on. It was intimidating to work with her at first, but now it’s just a real pleasure. She’s a really sweet person!” Weber’s character Frank is a womanizing tough-guy on the legal drama series, which happens to be quite the opposite of the down to earth Midwestern actor. “I get to see the world through the eyes of a man that is very different from me,” Weber reveals. “Sometimes you see an actor playing a sort of a version of himself, whereas Frank and I have very little in common, so it is kind of cool to step out of myself and be him for a while. He is a really layered guy, and over the years it’s been interesting to see him change his persona and get to some sort of sense of honesty. Being able to get to explore this complicated man has been a real treat for me as an actor!” Social Life

As for what viewers can expect to see on the fifth season? During season four’s finale, viewers were left with many cliffhangers. One of the final scenes shows Frank speaking on the phone to a mystery person while he’s watching from a distance, a new character, Gabriel Maddox, sign up at Middleton University. Weber reveals, “The season is going to open up, and that is where you’re going to find Frank and figure out why he is there. Over the course of time, you will find out who is on the other end of that phone and who Gabriel Maddox is and what is he doing there.” He adds, “All of the cliffhangers will get addressed over the course of time.” Aside from the hit TV show being a fascinating mystery series, the show addresses important issues and relationship dynamics such as addiction and LGBT affairs. When questioned about the show’s valuable content Weber responds, “For us, we are just making a show where people are living honest lives, you do find yourselves in these situations. We are just trying to portray real people, and if that can open up a dialogue about stuff, we are thrilled about that.” When the busy Hollywood actor is not working, he is a devoted father and loves spending time with his 13 year old daughter. And what does Weber’s daughter think of her dad’s acting career? “She’s not impressed!” Weber reveals. The star explains how his daughter won’t be following in his footsteps to pursue an acting career . . . at least not for the moment. “That’s a good thing, and if she wanted to act, I would support that as well,” Weber explains. “She’s a little artist, and right now at 13, she wants to be an animator. She goes to animation camps, and her school offers a lot of cool art classes; we are just pursuing that for her right now. If that changes, I will support whatever else that she wants. She is a legit artist and she has that gift!” Another very important aspect of the Jefferson City native’s weekly routine is carving out time for fitness. “I can’t go more than a few days without working out; it’s something I have been doing my whole life. It’s sort of a need and not even a choice, and I do enjoy it. It’s really a nice thing, and it’s a big part of my life. “Weber was extremely disciplined playing football in high school and college where he attended one year at the Univer“I really enjoy escaping sity of Missouri before moving to New York. He explains why into these characters. I he didn’t chose to pursue a footcan create a character ball career, “I will admit that leap to college where everyone was that can do anything. I big and strong and fast was such can create a character a leap in talent. It was cool to see but also kind of scary. I love that can do things that football very much, but I was losI am not capable of. . .” ing my passion to actually play it. SocialLifeMagazine.com

I think to play at that level, you have to be all in; I wanted to go see what the world was all about, and my head was just already gone. It was a real pleasure to be part of that team for the year, but it just wasn’t my path, and I knew it, even when I went to that year of college. I just wanted to know for sure, and it became very clear.” As for his love of the craft that helped cure his shyness as a kid, the former athlete reveals, “I always knew I wanted to act. Despite being shy, it did help me come out of my shell in a way, yet I still felt safe. I really enjoy escaping into these characters. I can create a character that can do anything. I can create a character that can do things that I am not capable of, and I think I fell in love with that.” It’s been life altering that’s for sure. I always wanted to act, but as a kid from a small town in Missouri, you don’t know how that really works or what you can do, so I just sort of went out into the world and let it unfold, and luckily it worked out!” ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder premiers Thursday, September 27th at 10/9 C

ANA OLIVEIRA THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NEW YORK WOMEN’S FOUNDATION By Jean Shafiroff

F

As a former board member and a longtime supporter of The New York Women’s Foundation, one of my top goals has been to make sure that as many people as possible know about the work of The New York Women’s Foundation. Ana, can you tell our readers about the top three goals of the foundation? Let me begin by thanking you for this opportunity. For over three decades, The New York Women’s Foundation has been working to ensure that women can thrive and live free of violence. In many ways we are one of the best-kept secrets. This is something we are working hard to change, and your support has been instrumental in raising our profile.

ounded in 1987, The New York Women’s Foundation is the top women’s foundation in the U.S. and second in the world for grantmaking. The foundation boldly invests in organizations and female leaders that strive for justice, economic security, safety, and health for women and families. It promotes women’s leadership, gender equity, and asset-based community approaches. The foundation goes beyond funding to deliver the resources and networking opportunities that emerging organizations and leaders need in order to continue to progress and succeed.

This Q&A is a perfect example. There are so many things that I would like the readers to know about our work, but if I have to pick three, they are the following. The foundation funds grass-roots, women-led nonprofits that have the solutions to improve economic opportunity, safety, and health for women and families in the most underinvested parts of New York City. What makes us unique is that, very often, we are the first or largest funder that an organization has—we’re not afraid to take risks. More than 80% of the organizations we’ve funded over our 31-year history are still in business serving their communities. Our donors see us as a great destination for their philanthropy because we invest in women’s leadership to ensure grantee partner success. In addition to supporting their missions financially, we invest in the leaders themselves. We equip them with coaching, training, and networking opportunities. We believe that collective giving is a powerful tool for making change. The money we invest is raised from women and men from all backgrounds and means—everyone is welcome. We are committed to the premise that everyone can and should be a philanthropist. SocialLifeMagazine.com

This spring, you announced an exciting partnership with Tarana Burke, the founder of the Me Too Movement. What are you planning to do together? Many people think the Me Too Movement is new. In fact, Tarana Burke created Me Too more than a decade ago to help survivors realize that they were not alone. We thought, What if she had the attention and funding she deserved back then? How much further along would we all be? So we created our first national fund to support Tarana’s work and other community activists focused on preventing and ending sexual violence, with an emphasis on the healing and leadership of survivors. We are thrilled to have Tarana as a partner in this critical mission. I am so pleased to host a cocktail party for the foundation at my home on September 17th. What can guests expect? As a longtime ambassador for the foundation and former board member, one of the most powerful things you’ve been able to do for the foundation is build energy and excitement for our annual gala. You have done this through your wonderful tradition of hosting a pre-event gathering the month before the gala.

It’s a generous gesture that is so much more than a party. It has been instrumental in engaging supporters in an exciting setting. Champions who are willing to introduce us to their networks are absolutely key to increasing our audience and raising funds to support our mission. Events like your cocktail party provide a wonderful way to invite a grantee partner of ours to speak. We want our supporters to hear directly from community leaders about the work they are doing and about how our investment in their organizations is making a difference. Can you tell our reader about the foundation’s upcoming annual gala on October 15? We are proud to announce that we will celebrate the anniversary of the Me Too Movement at our Radical Generosity Gala at the Plaza Hotel. Jean, we are very pleased to have you as a co-chair once again. For sure, it will be an inspiring evening. We will salute Tarana Burke and other leaders who have supported Tarana and the Me Too Movement. I can’t announce all of the honorees just yet, but I can confirm that the actress and activist Alyssa Milano will be with us.

Radical Generosity Gala Date: Monday, October 15, 2018 Time: from 6:30 to 9:30 pm Place: The Plaza Hotel This gala honors leaders in philanthropy, business, the arts, and social justice. The foundation hopes to raise $1.2 million during this elegant evening of dancing to live music, fine dining, and a silent auction. I just go hard.” His co-star Henry Cavill, who also played Superman in Justice League earlier this year confessed, “I’m a giant softy, but I honestly think it’s probably considered more masculine to be emotionally connected.” Cruise’s leading lady, Rebecca Ferguson, said, “I’m actually playing a real bad***, after this: Rose the Hat, who likes torturing people in The Shining.

ONE BLUE SWEATER By Somers Farkas

THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF CAPITALISM

O

nce upon a time in the 1970s, a young, bright-eyed girl from Virginia received a special sweater of soft blue wool, with two zebras and a mountain stitched across the front. She wrote her name on the tag and wore it everywhere. When she outgrew her cherished sweater, she gave it to Goodwill. About 15 years later, while working in Rwanda, she saw a young boy wearing that very sweater. She rushed over, and there, on its tag, was her handwritten name, Jacqueline Novogratz. To Jacqueline, this blue sweater proved human connectedness and how what we do (and don’t do) affects people all around the world. Her best-selling memoir is titled The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World.

In the early eighties, Jacqueline left a promising career on Wall Street and began a quest to change the way the world tackles poverty. In East and West Africa she met those exploited or overlooked and witnessed the cycle of dependency that governments and philanthropy often create for those in need. Jacqueline wanted to bridge the gap between the social impact of pure philanthropy and the efficiency and scale of marketbased approaches. Jacqueline realized that if capitalism can move markets, then businesses and entrepreneurs could create sustainable solutions to the problems of poverty. With moral imagination and a bit of audacity, Jacqueline founded Acumen in 2001—and revolutionized philanthropy. This nonprofit, global venture fund supports socially driven entrepreneurs, providing them with critical early-stage capital to achieve their visions. The organization invests philanthropic dollars, or “patient capital,” in start-ups that offer life-changing goods and services. These ventures create long-term solutions that strengthen societies and give individuals the chance to change their lives. Since its inception, Acumen has invested over $114 million to build nearly 109 innovative enterprises that address the problems of low-income consumers across Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and the United States. Products and services range from solar lanterns to high-producing chickens to waterless toilets for slums that lack basic plumbing. An example is d.light, one of Acumen’s first investments in solar energy. Sam Goldman, a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin, West Africa, founded the company after experiencing the inefficiencies and dangers of kerosene—toxic and flammable — in his non-electrified village, and, unfortunately, the predominant source of energy in West Africa and in most low-income communities around the world. After a kerosene lamp tipped and burned Sam’s neighbors’ house to the ground, nearly killing their youngest son, Sam knew he had to do something to eliminate the use of kerosene around the world. With Acumen’s support, Sam has almost reached that goal. In 2007, Sam and his partner, Ned Tozun, founded d.light, a social enterprise whose mission spurred its development of the world’s most affordable solar lanterns (A1), solar home systems, solar-powered cell-phone chargers, and HD TVs. Today, d.light has impacted more than 100 million lives across 62 countries, and is on track to become a multi-billion dollar Social Life

social enterprise serving hundreds of millions of customers. What about America? Low-income Americans also face acute challenges. Nearly 47 million live below the poverty line; close to 80 million can’t afford to see a doctor, and 68 million have either limited access to financial services or no bank account. In 2016, after 15 years of tackling poverty across the globe, Acumen turned its focus on the United States. Seed and Series A capital for social enterprises are not readily available around the country; Acumen America, with critical early support provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Barclays, and The Hitachi Foundation, launched a portfolio investing in three sectors it finds most strained: health, workforce development, and financial services. Together with private philanthropy, Acumen America invests in companies that develop sustainable business models to move millions of Americans out of poverty. For example, Felix Ortiz III is a first-generation American whose love for the United States inspired him to enlist in the army after high school. After his service, Felix recognized that the army’s career and alumni programs were ill-equipped to SocialLifeMagazine.com

help him or many of his fellow veterans find a job. Felix knew he had to create a solution that would help veterans and others overlooked by employers because they lacked higher education or certifications. In 2015, Felix launched Viridis, a cloud-based platform that connects veterans and community college students to employers with middle-skill positions. In 2017, Acumen invested early-stage capital in Viridis; today, the company has raised more than $10 million and partners with 24 college districts to serve more than 325,000 students. Viridis also partners with the California Community Colleges System, which adds an additional 114 schools and 2.3 million students that Viridis services. These are two of many examples of how Acumen’s patient capital changes the narrative of poverty. There is a lot more to be done, but with Acumen leading the charge, many people’s lives will have happier endings.

RACHEL’S RADAR INSPIRATION: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? By Rachel Heller

T

his summer I concentrated on empowering myself to make inspired change happen in my life by taking the initiative and being persistent about meeting my goals. Mindful living is extremely important to me because this is what can help me grow and expand my horizons. For example, I spent time visiting galleries and museums because I love art and it inspires me to be creative beyond my comfort zone. This past Saturday, I ran into the furniture designer Max Eicke, whom I’ve known for a few years. This artisan in his 30s designs and creates unique contemporary furniture that he displays at Max ID Studio, in Bridgehampton (by appointment). His studio is truly inspiring and worthy of a visit. In Sag Harbor I discovered an untouched strip of beach while visiting my family friend Vanessa Rome of Vanessa Rome Interiors. Her house is situated on a beach that recalls my memories of Romazzino beach in Sardinia. The home is perfectly Zen and was beautifully decorated by the gifted interior designer Vanessa herself. She has managed to incorporate the feeling of a top luxury spa into an everyday home you don’t want to leave. Sag Harbor itself has become an equally inspirational village for me with its unique contrast of new cool spots paired with old charming ones. This transcendent suburban vibe is unequaled. Later that evening, I had another amazing experience as the day came to a close, in a way that was not the usual. My radar is always on the move, so I accepted an invitation to the omakase hotspot Sushi by Bou in Southampton. The restaurant has Blade aviation fly fresh sushi fish from NYC to ensure that it has the freshest fish on the East End. The tasting menu, bite by bite, and flavor by flavor, was revelatory about the possible artistry of sushi cuisine. Prior to going to Sushi by Bou I stopped by the hip clothing store Cabana in Southampton for a new outfit. I found a fabulous ensemble perfect to wear for a Hamptons evening and off I went. I look forward to sharing where my radar takes me in the next season. You may follow me on instagram @rachelhellerxo for more Radar excitement.

THE “MAIN” EVENT By Jacob Puck

So, what’s all the fuss about?

I

t’s a rare occasion when a property comes on the market that is architecturally exquisite, steeped in history, and ultimately breathtaking, but that’s exactly the case with 238 Main Street in Sag Harbor. “From my perspective, 238 Main Street exemplifies the Hamptons, its unique aesthetic, and just about everything that makes it a desirable locale for the highest net-worth individual looking for a slice of provenance,” says Mark Baron of Brown Harris Stevens and an invitation-only member of Luxury Portfolio International. Baron has anchored his partnership with fellow broker Jane Babcook. The pair are the new Hamptons super-team and share all exclusive listings. “To say 238 Main Street is one-of-a-kind is a bit of an understatement,” says Babcook. “This is the type of listing that makes me very proud to be in this business.”

This historic Nathan P. Howell house is the largest property on renowned and highly desirable Captain’s Row, and is a rare example of period architecture that has been impeccably renovated to the highest level. Built in 1833, 238 Main represents Sag Harbor’s most elaborate Greek Revival architecture, expanded and remodeled in the Italianate style in 1850. Original details have been maintained and are found throughout, including double-hung sash windows, shutters, acanthus leaves, and exquisite moldings. The expert craftsmanship, fine millwork, antique wide-plank floors, and marble mantles will transport you back to a time when a person’s home was indeed a castle. The main residence offers over 10,000 square feet of living space on four levels, featuring seven bedrooms, eight full and one half baths. Arched entries lead through gracious hallways to grand lightfilled parlors with ceilings that soar higher than 10 feet. This stylish landmark home also features a superbly appointed epicurean kitchen, nine fireplaces, two staircases, an elevator, and a cupola. Rare for an in-town property, 238 Main Street is situated on over an acre of pristine land in the heart of the village. It’s absolutely unique. The elaborately landscaped grounds and beautiful gardens provide the utmost in privacy and include a gunite pool and a fourbay, climate-controlled garage with an art studio attached. “Each summer, people always ask which property is my favorite listing, and this one is at the top of the list,” says Baron. “Both Jane and I consider it an absolute privilege to represent the most prestigious property in the village. The Howell home dates back to the most successful whaling families on the East Coast, making it particularly special for Jane and me, who are both entranced by the water.” Baron and Babcook were the obvious choice to list 238 Main Street. Industry leaders, they now comprise “Hamptons Luxury Agents.” The pair has established strong connections, particularly in New York and Florida, expanding their reach and creating even more value for their clients by putting their listings front and center in some of the most affluent markets, including Europe. The asking price is $14,750,000.

DOTTIE HERMAN CEO OF DOUGLAS ELLIMAN By Bennett Marcus

EYE ON REAL ESTATE Dottie Herman is the CEO of Douglas Elliman and a radio host. Herman, who owns thirty percent of the company, purchased it in 2003 in partnership with Howard Lorber, and today Douglas Elliman has over $27 billion in annual sales and 7,000 real estate agents. Herman is self-made, starting as a broker on Long Island and later building Prudential Real Estate into a powerhouse in the region. Once established in the Hamptons, Herman realized that all the competing firms were local. “We opened in Manhattan, and I was the first company with an agency that ran from Manhattan to Montauk,” Herman says. On her popular longtime radio show, Eye on Real Estate, she and other experts give advice on real estate, including legal and mortgage topics. Podcasts are available from iTunes.

PHILANTHROPY Herman is active in a number of charitable causes, including those supporting research in heart disease and breast cancer. She has long been affiliated with the Breast Cancer Research Fund, founded by the late Evelyn Lauder. She is also involved in Stony Brook Hospital’s pediatric oncology program. This spring, she was one of the recipients of an Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Her fellow 2018 honorees were Prince Albert of Monaco and Rita Moreno. “It was very patriotic, and I was very proud to be an American,” Herman says.

HONORED AT THE UN Last year, Herman was honored at the UN, receiving the Pioneer Award for Business at the organization’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Day event. Instead of a trophy, needy African children participating in an art therapy program gave her a painting they’d made themselves. “They got a picture of me, and they painted themselves and me in the picture,” she says. “They were little kids, and they painted an award for me, and it was so touching that I will treasure it for the rest of my life.” This fall Dottie will be honored at Denise Rich’s Angel Ball.

MENTORING Even as a top executive of a large company, Herman takes the time to mentor others. “At the end of the day, I think when you’re a leader, whether you’re male or female, people look up to you and respect you, and really my biggest passion is being able to give back and make a difference in people’s lives.” She feels that everybody needs a little reassurance at times. “I get a lot of joy out of doing that, being there and helping people, and showing them that you can grow to wherever you want if you really want to do it.”

ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN

Herman also advocates for women over 50 in the workplace. “I really think that you can almost become invisible, and I work on awareness, on giving those women confidence. You have to really feel confidence in yourself and what you do and who you are.” SOULCYCLE AFICIONADO Herman is a longtime SoulCycle member. “My first spin was at Sag Harbor 20 years ago, when no one even heard of it.” And she loves the ocean. “There’s something about the ocean; it moves me; it’s got a personality of its own.”

COLLECTS SHOES

Another passion is shoes, but Herman goes beyond the closetful of designer footwear. She collects actual shoes and miniature versions, and displays them as artwork. “My collection includes shoes from different eras, from the 1800s to the 1970s when the wedges were in,” she says. “Well, they’re back in again.”

Or imagine that skinny-dipping moment when you’re alone with your partner, late at night. It’s connecting your soul and body in a basic element, water. BUILDING VALUE IN HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS INSIGHTS FROM A SEASONED HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE BROKER By Ed Bruehl

A

s a seasoned, licensed associate real estate broker with Saunders & Associates, I’d like to share some tips about building in the Hamptons and how to identify investment value in the properties. It’s all about the land. Once you’ve identified that special parcel, then build a smart house filled with all the must-haves that buyers today demand. And build to the reasonable dimensions that today’s buyers want. After years of showing and selling homes in the Hamptons, gleaning buyer feedback along the way, and really studying and understanding local market data, I believe the answer to building value in the Hamptons real estate market is not complicated but takes planning and commitment. Here are a few important things to consider: a a a

$3MM market, especially if they are looking for a new home. At this price point, most, if not all, of the new and loaded houses are asking $4MM++ for houses that are 5,000 square feet and more. But the market for these larger, more expensive houses is lukewarm at best. Times have changed . . . today’s buyer is happy in their 1,500-squarefoot New York City apartment and will be equally happy in a reasonably sized, four-bedroom home under $3MM. But we have a very limited inventory to show, unless it’s in a challenged location or requires a big renovation project. The latter is a smart buyer-strategy, if you have the time and energy.

A perfect example of what I’m talking about. 5 Rolling Wood Lane, East Hampton, is a newly built and custom-designed classic colonial that belongs on the pages of a storybook. It’s 3,600 square feet and the asking price is $2,500,000.

Work with a veteran local broker who knows the market and then partner with a fair and quality builder. Build a simple house that most people will like. Don’t build a spec house or a McMansion. Build a smart mini-estate and load it with all of the modern amenities and extras people want.

What do people want? They want:

Newly built on a nice quiet street; privately sited and professionally landscaped; loaded with today’s amenities like a great room, big doors and windows, a mudroom, beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms (all en-suite), upstairs laundry, open-kitchen with island, outside covered dining; walk-out and fully-finished lower-level with steps to a bluestone patio around a sunny pool, a mahogany outdoor shower, and a beautiful newly sodded yard that is flat for throwing/ kicking a ball. And, yes, this list is a result of what every buyer has either specifically asked for or what I have literally lost a deal over.

Local market data and thoughts: There is little or no inventory to show buyers looking in the under

A

s a top 10 agent at Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Southampton, I have helped my beloved clients and customers purchase and sell real estate from Southampton to Amagansett. Living in Water Mill with my husband, two children, and a Jack Russell and Labrador pup. I certainly relate to those who want the best for their families. Properties in the Hamptons are exquisite. ATLANTIC CITY OCEAN RESORT CASINO By Joe Alexander

MARK WAHLBERG “I’m honored to be here,” said Mark Wahlberg before cutting the ribbon at the official opening of Ocean Resort Casino on June 28th. “It’s such an amazing opportunity for everybody to be a part of the community, to be a part of our family, to share our family’s experience with the families of Atlantic City and the people who come from all over the world to visit this great destination.” The movie star added that his brother Paul had joined him for the ceremony, and that AC is close enough to his home in Boston that his mother, Alma, can drive there. She came to the grand opening as well, along with his wife, Rhea, and their four kids.

A RENAISSANCE FOR ATLANTIC CITY

The opening of Ocean Resort marks a rebirth for Atlantic City. The 60-story luxury hotel boasts a 138,000-square-foot casino, 160,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, over 1,300 luxurious guest rooms, oceanfront amenities, nightlife options, and 16 restaurants, including the chef Marc Forgione’s American Cut (americancutsteakhouse.com), Dolce Mare, Amada, and Harper’s—all run by renowned chefs.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE

Wahlberg is no stranger to Atlantic City. He was a producer on Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s Prohibition-Era-drama set in Atlantic City, and that ran for five seasons. “It’s great to see how much development has gone on even since the last time I was here,” Wahlberg told the crowd. “The city has continued to grow and to flourish, and I’m honored to be a part of it.” Bruce Deifik, Ocean Resort’s developer and majority owner, is bullish on Atlantic City, noting Stockton University’s new $220-million campus, a huge medical center expansion, and other new developments in the city.

MARK WAHLBERG, AN INVESTOR Wahlberg and Diefik are friends, but the actor did not simply lend his star power to the opening ceremony as a favor; he’s an investor in Ocean Resort Casino. “Mark loved the idea of being involved in such a beautiful place, and he also thinks that Atlantic City has turned the corner, building a solid foundation under its feet,” Deifik explains.

IVAN KANE’S ROYAL JELLY BURLESQUE

Ivan Kane is a burlesque legend, opening his first club in L.A., and another in Las Vegas. The Los Angeles Times described it as “truly burlesque reinvented.” This outpost at Ocean features dancing and burlesque on multiple stages, with overthe-top costuming and light shows. Expect classic burlesque to a swinging live jazz band, plus an outrageous, extravagant burlesque show set to rock ’n’ roll music. royaljellyac.com

1,399 ROOMS & SUITES AND MORE ON THE WAY

There are 1,399 rooms at the Ocean Resort Hotel Casino, and every single one features unobstructed views of the ocean through floor-to-ceiling windows. If you get tired of watching the rolling tide, you can watch your 46-inch flat-screen television from your huge bed. My favorite is the one-bedroom corner suite, which has a separate living area and an extra half bath. Everything is state of the art, with fine millwork, and large, luxurious baths stocked with Molton Brown body and hair care products. Over the next 18 months, Deifik plans to add more rooms in the the main tower, bringing the total room count to nearly 2,000 rooms. theoceanac.com Social Life

BRUCE DEIFIK MEET THE HOTELIER By Joe Alexander

OCEAN RESORT CASINO Bruce Deifik had never set foot in Atlantic City until May of 2017, but one year later, he opened the city’s newest mega property: Ocean Resort Casino. Previously the $3-billion hotel casino Revel had gone into bankruptcy, and Deifik put down a nonrefundable $10-million deposit to take over the contract. “Over the last 15 months, I’ve lived in Atlantic City 90 percent of the time, leaving my home and offices in Denver to make sure that we got this done right,” Deifik said shortly after the June opening.

ATLANTIC CITY

He’s bullish on Atlantic City and its future. I looked around and started to understand the history of AC, the people, the beach, the boardwalk, and the ocean,” said. Deifik fell in love with the project. “I looked at the property and I realized it wasn’t just one of the great properties in Atlantic City; it was one of the great properties in the world,” he said. “There are not many properties that are architecturally more beautiful, more capable, and higher-quality construction than Ocean Resort Casino.” The building is the tallest in Atlantic City, and the second tallest in New Jersey. The building was newly built and didn’t operate for very long before closing, which helped in getting it up and running in a short time. “It was in very good condition,” Deifik said. Their first step was listening to what people liked and did not like about the Revel, and a big one was that the property had not been open to the boardwalk. There was a wall—Deifik likens it to a prison wall—that he took down and replaced with a set of grand staircases that lead to the boardwalk.

THE CASINO

They rearranged the entire casino floor, putting in the latest machines. “The flow and the sightlines are completely different from before. We changed every filter in the place, every light bulb, every drain, all of the basic stuff.” Everything was painted, cleaned, and scrubbed. In the hotel rooms, most of the carpeting was changed, and the millwork upgraded, even though the rooms were in immaculate shape. “We paid very close attention to what people said that we need to do, and we did it,” Diefik said. “So the bottom line is there’s nothing that customers felt was an issue that we haven’t addressed, and we continue to address. At the same time, we’re doing other things that we felt needed to be changed to make the property more viable.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Shanina Shaik, Bruce Deifik and Heidi Klum at Ocean Resort Casino

TOPGOLF & SPORTS BETTING CENTER

They brought in Topgolf, added a sports-betting center, and have an ownership stake in all 16 of the restaurants on the property, which helps them provide topnotch service and better accommodate patrons. “There’s great optionality here,” says Deifik. “You can stay at our place and go to a concert at the Hard Rock, or vice versa. You can stay at the Borgata, come eat dinner at our place. You can play Topgolf at our place, go to the other places, walk the boardwalk, get on the beach. A lot of other areas that have one property or many don’t have that kind of optionality.” theoceanac.com

JOEY MORRISSEY CLUB KING IN ATLANTIC CITY By Joe Alexander

Heidi Klum and Joey Morrissey at HQ2

OCEAN RESORT CASINO Having run some of the Hamptons and the city’s most successful nightspots, including Pink Elephant, M2 Ultra Lounge, Crobar, and Mansion, Joey Morrissey brings a wealth of experience to his latest venture, HQ2 Beachclub & Nightclub at Atlantic City’s Ocean Resort Casino. HQ2 will be open all year and has already attracted Mark Wahlberg, Heidi Klum, Jamie Fox, and Victoria’s Secret Angels Alessandra Ambrosia, Leomie Anderson, and Shanina Shaik.

NIGHTLIFE INNOVATOR During Morrissey’s 30 years in the business, he pioneered nightlife innovations such as promoters to bring crowds to clubs, bottle service as a way to increase revenues, and an early YouTube channel that broke ground in the days before social media.

In addition to running his own venues, Morrissey was the go-to person who brought in crowds and renowned DJs to such legendary venues as Studio 54, Palladium, China Club, Roxy, Tunnel, Limelight, Pangea, Marquee, and many others in the city and the Hamptons. To fill these vast spaces, Morrissey came up with the concept of hiring club promoters: the people who put you on their lists at the door. “I started the promoter system. It’s based on a Wall Street principal,” he explains. “I was like the top broker who has many brokers under him. My promoters brought in people, and they in turn brought in more people . . . And then I started making lists.” All of that kept drawing more and more people, so he had to find larger spaces and ways to accommodate everyone. “So I started doing a Friday, a Saturday, a Sunday, a Monday, a Tuesday. Soon I was doing seven days a week.”

CLUB FLYERS & PROMOTERS

BOTTLE SERVICE

Morrissey got his start in the 1970s, before the era of cellphones and the internet, so he was always collecting contact data in order to get in touch with people. Voila, the door-list was born. And flyers were the way to get the word out. “I created the whole guerrillamarketing concept, where you hand out a million flyers. The other club owners hated me,” he says. But they all followed suit.

Morrissey says he was not the first person to establish bottle service, but he was the person who turned it into an industry staple as we know it today, starting back in 1996. He had a perfectly sound business reason for instituting bottle service: increasing revenues in small venues. Even with a door fee, only a limited number of people could fit inside. He set up banquettes to the side so his better Social Life

T R AV E L

customers could be more comfortable in a crowded space. A group he worked with in the Hamptons liked what Morrissey had done, and they later opened a club in Miami called Chaos that was strictly bottle service. “I think they’ll probably be the guys who’ll be credited with it,” Morrissey says.

SOUND FACTORY— PIONEERING THE DJ AS STAR

In 1998, as DJs were beginning to rise to fame, Morrissey was promoting the opening of Sound Factory, in Manhattan, and focused on just the DJ, a tactic that proved wildly successful. He went on to work with the biggest names in the business, including Swedish House Mafia, DJ AM, DJ Khaled, DJ Clue, Jazzy Jeff, Jermaine Dupri, and Funkmaster Flex, to name a few. “There were some big DJs, but the most you ever paid them was $1,000,” he says. Sound Factory had a fantastic sound system, and the owner wanted him to promote the music as the main attraction. It worked, but Morrissey says he didn’t realize at the time how it was changing the industry. “The DJs started to become bigger than the promoters, so then DJ prices started to go up.” In the late 1990s, Morrissey booked Dutch DJ Tiesto at Limelight, and paid him $2,000 plus airfare and hotel. “I don’t know where all these people came from, but it was packed,” he says. The gig was such a success that afterward an agent guaranteed Tiesto $1 million per year. “That started it,” says Morrissey. “All the clubs started paying these DJs a tremendous amount of money.”

YOUTUBE PIONEER BEFORE PHONE CAMERAS In 2007, Morrissey started filming at his Chelsea clubs and posting the videos online. Back then, if you had a digital camera, the videos were dark and grainy, especially in dim club lighting. There was a simple reason behind this pioneering push online: he wanted people to see what was happening at his nightspots. “I would do press and they would read about it, but nobody could actually see what it looked like,” he says. Morrissey’s brother was in TV production, so Morrissey hired one of his cameramen who was good at editing, and posted the videos on his website. “I was ahead of my time,” he says. His website looked more like a TV channel because you could click on different videos, and he posted lots of photos, giving it a sort of Facebook vibe. “I was doing social media but I didn’t know how to monetize it. That’s when YouTube had just come out. It was in the beginning stages, so I started before anybody did it,” Morrissey says. “I started editing and producing. If you look at my videos, they look like they’ve been done today.” The videos started getting millions of views, and YouTube contacted Morrissey, inviting him to be an affiliate. “I’m like, what the hell does that mean?” he laughs. They wanted to give him his own channel. “So I signed up for it, and then I started getting checks from them. And I used that money to pay the cameraman.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Alessandra Ambrosio and Joey Morrissey at HQ2

MORRISSEY BROUGHT BIG-NAME CELEBRITIES TO HIS CLUBS Morrissey conceived the concept of paying celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, to show up at his clubs. He would ask them to host a party, and then promote the fact to fill the space. His venues housed parties for the NBA and NFL, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, MTV, the Tribeca Film Festival, and numerous movie premieres. P. Diddy threw his son a birthday party where Nicki Minaj performed, and it was broadcast live on MTV. Beyoncé and Jay Z were also regular guests. Madonna, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Lenny Kravitz, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Sebastian Bach, Rihanna, Drake, Prince, Kiss, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige were among the stars who performed live at his clubs.

MARK WAHLBERG IN ATLANTIC CITY This fall and winter you can expect to see more famous faces at HQ2. Mark Wahlberg has taken an ownership stake in the Ocean Resort Casino, and is opening up a branch of his Wahlburgers restaurant in the hotel. The actor also plans to open a bar here with either an Entourage or Boardwalk Empire theme that Morrissey is helping to design. Wahlberg came to the June opening of the property with a TV crew to shoot scenes for an episode of his A&E show Wahlburgers. “The next day we played golf and made plans for events later this year,” said Morrissey. hq2ac.com

Personally, I’ve had my fill of ski trips after having grown up in Newton, Massachusetts, where tackling the slopes was the recreational go-to. Jackson Hole is near Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, offering an incredible opportunity to commune with nature and explore the varied topography of the area. The resort just introduced TEN, a new pop-up restaurant offering Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, which quite successfully riffs on the fusion mindset elsewhere on the property. Dishes include sushi, ceviche, beef teriyaki and (hold us back) black shrimp aguachile. Also new is an Italian cooking class where guests can learn to make fresh pasta from scratch. This is in addition to established Thai and Mexican cooking classes. For the previously initiated, you know that you can’t beat HAAB, a unique interactive outdoor dining experience that brings to life ancient Mayan traditions, culture, and cuisine. As newbies, we raised an eyebrow when we were escorted into the jungle by Mayan warriors dressed in full garb with face paint and feather headdresses, beating drums, and carrying fire-lit torches (think Survivor meets the Hawaii episode of The Brady Bunch). Following a sundown ritual, the warriors told stories of ancient Mayan culture and customs, as all guests actively participate in the preparation of traditional Mayan cuisine. It was educational and sublime. HAAB takes its name from Mayan astrology, an integral part of the Mayan calendar and culture, and is inspired by the four basic elements of earth, wind, fire, and water, which were apparent throughout the evening. In addition to the healthy cuisine, the spa and resort activities highlight wellness as a priority at Mayakoba. Founded in Phuket in 2001, the Banyan Tree Spa Academy provides dedicated training facilities to ensure that the highly-skilled therapists consistently SocialLifeMagazine.com

deliver the highest quality treatments and authenticity anywhere in the world. The Banyan Tree Spa was created to blend romance, serenity, and exotic sensuality in a true sanctuary for the senses. Features include 16 lagoon- or jungle-view private treatment rooms, as well as massages and treatments in the privacy of your pool villas. Here’s a favorite: The rainforest hydrotherapy experience is unique to this resort, combining the best of European spa and hydrothermal therapy with the essence of Asian wellness philosophy to create a haven of serenity, warmth, and comfort. With eight different hydrothermal therapy experiences, the exceptional Rainforest Trail is designed for a romantic experience, to soothe and revitalize your body, presenting a truly holistic and rejuvenating wellness experience. New this fall, the resort will début a wellness program for travelers looking to stay active and healthy while on holiday. Aptly named the “Healthy Vacation,” it offers guests a suite of wellness amenities and health-minded experiences, including daily smoothie bowls created by a health coach who also provides a 60-minute individual consultation; one yoga class; a cultural activity in the local community guided by the resort’s corporate social responsibility director; and a welcome kit upon arrival with a yoga mat and special gift. Yes, Banyan Tree Mayakoba should make your winter holiday short-list even shorter . . . the only remaining question is “When will you return?” Banyan Tree Mayakoba banyantree.com

FIT FOR ROYALTY EDINBURGH’S THE BALMORAL HOTEL SETS A NEW STANDARD WITH ALAIN ROUX’S BRASSERIE PRINCE By Anthony Michael

I

f you’ve visited a Rocco Forte property, you’re aware that luxury knows no limits. This is particularly evident at The Balmoral in Edinburgh, Scotland, one of nearly a dozen properties in Rocco Forte Hotels’ celebrated portfolio. The Balmoral’s most recent element of wow? The wildly anticipated Brasserie Prince, run by the Michelin-starred chef Alain Roux. Located in the heart of Edinburgh on Princes Street, the new brasserie is fittingly named after the Scottish romantic hero who had close ties to France, Bonnie Prince Charles, otherwise known as “The Young Pretender.” There is no trickery at the Brasserie, where, two hundred years later, Roux created a new alliance of Scottish-and-French-fusion cuisine. Whether you’re staying at The Balmoral or planning a special night out during a stay elsewhere, you will be impressed by the restaurant’s fresh redesign by Martin Brudnizki in collaboration with the Rocco Forte Hotels director of design, Olga Polizzi. It’s all part of a refresh for the five-star hotel’s 188 contemporary rooms and opulent

suites that include the signature J.K. Rowling Suite and the Scone & Crombie Suite; the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Number One; the afternoon tea lounge, Palm Court; and the destination whisky bar, SCOTCH, with over 500 single-malt whiskies to choose among. Roux’s seasonal menu is inspired by Scottish ingredients and showcases his heritage of sensational French cooking. Dinner standouts include Dover sole meunière, Scottish côte de boeuf, and plateaux de fruits de mer. An adjoining bar and lounge area, a destination in its own right, offers beautifully and simply prepared classic cocktails and a food menu of French snacks and sharing platters, also created by Roux. Enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif fireside or a nightcap at the bar. Don’t miss breakfast and lunch. For reservations, visit brasserieprince.com or call 0131 556 2414. CHÂTEAU DE CHAUSSE CÔTES DE PROVENCE AOC, 2016, FRANCE’S NO. 1 ROSÉ ADDS INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR TO THE HAMPTONS THIS SUMMER By Lizabeth Zindel

I

dyllically nestled in France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in the heart of the St.-Tropez peninsula, the award-winning Château de Chausse winery is celebrating the spirit of this summer’s season by offering its Côtes de Provence AOC Rosé, 2016—one of the premier rosés from France—along with five other premium estate wines. Available from select retailers in the United States and online, this should be especially welcome news this summer for international wine connoisseurs who are also residents and visitors of the Hamptons. One reason that the arrival of Château de Chausse should make such a valuable addition to dinner tables and cocktail parties in the Hamptons this summer—and all year long—is the diverse variety of choices it offers. Château de Chausse is an ideal French import, which is notable because it can be difficult to discover the best in SocialLifeMagazine.com

an area that boasts more than 60 wineries and vineyards. Crafting some of the most expressive and natural wines that only the St.-Tropez peninsula region of France can offer—and organically cultivating them from the finest handpicked and hand-pressed grapes on 38 planted acres—this rare and unique collection is available in cases of six with prices ranging between $19.99 and $39.99. Château de Chausse estate lies just nine miles from St.-Tropez. The 135-acre property was originally purchased in 1986 by Yves and Roseline Schelcher, a Swiss couple who increased the 135-acre estate’s original five acres of vines to 37½. Their first official release under the Château de Chausse label was in 1993. After 30 years of ownership, the Schelchers sold their estate in 2016. w For more information, visit chateaudechausse.com.

JOE GURRERA JOE KNOWS FISH By Devorah Rose

Y

ou could say no one knows fish like Joe Gurrera. The deep passion he has for fresh catch can’t be taught. It’s in his blood, how he grew up, and how he has forged his life. Once the youngest kid at the Fulton Fish market, Joe is now the purveyor of gourmet excellence as the owner of Citarella. His newest book, Joe Knows Fish, is an ode to his roots. Within its pages, Joe shares his own favorite recipes, little known tricks of the trade, and most important, tips that make cooking a gourmet fish meal easy. I was lucky enough to catch up with Joe and pick his brain after perusing the book. Here is what he had to say: When was your love of cooking born? One of the first things I ever cooked was a whole fish. It wasn’t intimidating because I was a fishmonger and I knew how to fillet a fish. For a long time, cooking for me was about entertaining. I really wasn’t cooking every day because I was working day and night between the Citarella retail store and Lockwood & Winant wholesale market. I’m not a chef, but I’ve been cooking for over 40 years. I like to eat simply—not a lot of sauces—and I have always cooked the same way, even for guests. I want to taste the true flavors of the food, which is why I value fresh ingredients. I only cook with the freshest foods—and that’s what I sell in my stores too. And now when I have time and a craving for something, I like to get in the kitchen and create. What inspired you to write Joe Knows Fish? Hands down to take the intimidation out of cooking seafood. I’ve been wanting to write this book for years. People are always telling me that they don’t know how to cook fish, that it scares them. I promise, if you can cook a beef steak you can cook a fish steak. It’s that easy. I wanted to write a book for beginners, introducing them to different flavors and textures of seafood. I want people to love fish like I do.

I’m a pescatarian who is intimidated to cook fish. Why do you think so many people are scared to cook fish? Honestly, I think people are intimidated by cooking fish because they didn’t grow up with it. If their families didn’t eat or cook fish, they most likely don’t know what to do with it. They don’t know how to buy, handle, or cook it. People are always worried they’re going to ruin seafood when they cook it. And you know what, if you overcook it, you are going to ruin it. Timing is the most important element to preparing seafood. Because fish is delicate, you have to be extremely focused and not allow for any distractions when you cook it. Pay attention when you’re cooking fish and you’ll be successful. Social Life

“Fish has been my life. I love fish. I eat it five to seven days a week by choice—and I cook it myself. I want to show you how to grill the best branzino, stuff and bake a tender calamari, and broil the perfect red snapper. My goal is to show you techniques that are so simple you’ll feel at ease cooking fish any day of the week.” — Joe Gurrera

What’s the best way to get the smell of fish out of your kitchen? Always turn on your exhaust fan and take out your trash! Don’t leave a fish carcass or skin or seafood shells in your garbage, even for one night! And truth be told, fresh fish shouldn’t smell fishy. If it does, you should rethink your relationship with your fishmonger. It should have a fresh smell, like the sea. And don’t use wooden cutting boards. They hold on to fish odors. Use plastic surfaces instead. What’s your favorite recipe in your cookbook? That’s like asking if I have a favorite kid. I love them all. A few of my signature dishes, though, are my ceviche, which is perfect for summer. Spaghetti vongole is always one of my go-to dishes, and, of course, I could always eat crudo. I even eat scallops raw. I will admit, I do have a particular soft spot for soft-shell SocialLifeMagazine.com

crabs and shad. I think their seasonality makes them special. What’s your favorite meal to prepare in your home in the Hamptons? If it’s just my wife and me, I usually grill whole fish, maybe branzino or porgy, or make something like roasted clams. One of my favorite things to do is cook for a crowd. Some of my favorite dishes to prepare are roasted cod and oven-roasted littleneck clams, with just a light dusting of breadcrumbs; and white-wine steamed mussels are great because you can cook up a big pot of them, and serve with crusty bread to soak up all the garlicky broth. If the weather’s nice, we just bring the pot outside and let people dig in. w To order your copy of

CUTTING THROUGH THE CLUTTER OF EVENT STAFFING By Fallon Harrington Lucas Mendieta

C

utting Edge Elite can deliver the staff you need for any event. This is the promise of the staffing company’s founders, Lucas Mendieta and Nathan Perry, who started the business in 2008 when they were both 25. They have grown it exponentially through hard work into the top staffing agency it is today. Cutting Edge has staffed events for high-profile clients, including Chanel, Google, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, and Beyoncé’s Visual album release party. Cutting Edge Elite was founded on the principles of community and trust. By investing in staff and leading them with the highest standards, Cutting Edge can deploy competent, motivated, and unified teams capable of adapting quickly and providing genuine service for each event. Inspired by their own experiences in events, the founders aim to bring out the best in people and bring them together. Why? Because at the end of the day there is no faking a smile and attitude that impacts every guest’s experience. Social Life sat down with Lucas to learn more about his secrets to success and to get tips on how to staff a party, soirée, or an event of any type.

For our leaders we have both lieutenant and captain training, and then a bartending course as well. Ninety percent of trainings are taught by my business partner, Nathan Perry, and myself. Do you have any tips for those looking to plan an event? First, make sure your staffing agency has employees who are W2s, not 1099s (independent contractors). Not having properly insured staff opens the door to many legal liabilities for planners, caterers, and their clients. Second, planners need to have the correct ratio of staff versus guests to ensure everything is executed properly. You should also take into consideration the layout and logistics of the event to determine how much staff is needed. What is your personal commitment to your clients? We’ve built our company with heart and compassion. If I didn’t start Cutting Edge Elite, I’m not sure where I would be. I was homeless for a few years and was working as a janitor prior to getting into events, so I know firsthand what it’s like to be on the other side of the fence. So, failure isn’t an option for me. I work the events alongside my team because I want to earn our staff ’s respect as well as better understand each client’s logistics and priorities. Cutting Edge Elite ceenyc.com

Is there a magic formula for staffing an event? When it comes to staffing, we treat it like a match.com, because we have to match up the staff ’s personalities with the client’s and then think about how the staff operates as a team, their skill sets, strengths, and so forth. It’s very much like a game of chess where we have to position all the right players in their given spots. How do you ensure your staff is experienced and up to par? Our staff go through our extensive workshops. It is a long process. After the initial interview, they’re invited to an orientation where we speak more about the company, go through the do’s and don’ts and explain what sets us apart from competitors. We have a catering 101 workshop where we go through all aspects of the party from first arrival until breakdown, and what the catering terminology is. Social Life

PLATFORM: BARTHÉLÉMY TOGUO THE BEAUTY OF OUR VOICE Interview By Deliah Flores Feature Produced By Eve Xanthopoulos

E

ach year the Parrish Art Museum chooses an artist for its Platform project. The mission of Platform is to present process-based projects by a single artist who engages with the museum’s architecture (by the renowned Herzog & de Meuron) and surrounding areas as a source of inspiration for the installation. This year, the artist is the internationally renowned Barthélémy Toguo. His multi-disciplinary work—painting, performance, installation, and photography—addresses issues of migration, mobility, colonialism, race, and the relationship between the global north and south. In a unique partnership with The Watermill Center, Toguo resided at the center in June while he created watercolor paintings and a boat for his new version of his installation Road to Exile, adapted for the Parrish. The exhibition will also include photographs from his series Stupid African President and postcards from his Head Above Water, a project that engaged Hamptons residents. I spoke with Corinne Erni, the Parrish Art Museum’s senior curator of ArtsReach and special projects, about this exciting and unique installation: Platform: Barthélémy Toguo | The Beauty of Our Voice. Social Life



ART

Why did you choose Barthélémy Toguo as the Platform participant for 2018? I picked the artist because I knew him from before. I had cofounded ARTPORT_making waves, a curatorial practice that uses art to raise awareness of climate change, and Toguo participated in our project at the U.N. climate change conference in Paris, in 2015. I find his work appealing and aesthetically beautiful, but also thoughtful. For him art is really his life, and he integrates it into every aspect of his life.

tion, ‘Where do I fit in American society?’ His question reflects his curiosity about young people’s thoughts on their future and local community.

This is also the first time that you are collaborating with The Watermill Center. Can you explain this collaboration? It’s been a wonderful experience. The Watermill Center, which was created by the theater director and visual artist Robert Wilson, hosted Barthélémy Toguo for a two-week residency. This was a great collaboration, and allowed us to have the artist in the Hamptons while he created the artwork that is on view.

I think it’s noteworthy that Toguo’s engaging the community in order to create his installation will make the exhibition more accessible for the local audience. Yes, and that’s why it was very important for the artist to spend time here in the Hamptons. He’s also very curious about the Hamptons and that inspired his work. Hopefully the students will come back with their families to see the postcards that they submitted. They can see their own work on the walls and we’ll all see their thoughts as part of the exhibition. I think that’s a great way to bring people into the museum.

Can you describe how Hamptons residents were involved in the Head Above Water aspect of the upcoming exhibition? We did a postcard project that allowed the Parrish’s education department to collaborate with The Watermill Center’s education department. We went into different schools and worked with many local students in the area, which was really wonderful. The artist gave participants postcards and asked them to answer the quesSocialLifeMagazine.com

I was very curious to hear what young people think about the community. The Hamptons has a complex social makeup: we have the summer residents and we also have the year-round community. In some schools in the Hamptons, almost 40 percent of the school population comprises Latino students and other immigrants.

w The exhibition is on view until October 14.

A BOOK TO MAKE YOU LAUGH . . . AND WONDER INVASIONS ON HICKORY ROAD BY JIM DELAY By Patrick Nicholas

Invasions on Hickory Road is a mystical yet insightfully comic story of the folks who live in a sunny suburban neighborhood.

EDITOR’S PICK

PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY ENTRANT CRITIC’S RATING:

HHHHHHHHHH Plot: Delay slowly and skillfully builds suspense through uncommon circumstances and characters, unveiling public and private secrets—some quite benign, others explosive. The novel unfolds in a manner reminiscent of a play, with crisp dialogue, theatrical introduction of characters, and descriptions that mimic stage directions. Looming behind the individual dramas unfolding between players in the novel is the greater issue at hand—the neighboring home invasion epidemic. Prose: Delay incorporates a variety of literary devices into this ambitious project, including soliloquies, correspondence between characters, and dramatic writing. The layers of texture in the prose create a playful and unexpected reading experience. Originality: Darkly absurd humor, a unique concept, and wonderfully eccentric characters result in a highly original and entertaining novel. Character Development: From the “roll call” introduction of each resident to the eventual discussion of their intertwined relationships, Delay’s novel offers a theatrical mosaic of diverse characters facing existential and interpersonal conflicts and crises. Read the first chapter on Amazon. The book is available in paperback and Kindle editions.

RONI WILLETT

JORDAN FINE

YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST

ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS

UNITED HATZALAH & SHALVA Roni Willett, at 23, is moving into the spotlight as a young philanthropist. She’s actively involved in multiple causes, including United Hatzalah, which provides “specially equipped motorcycles in Israel that allow a trained medical professional to get to an emergency situation in 90 seconds,” says Roni. At a recent benefit at her parents’ Hamptons home, which she designed, Roni took one for a spin. “It’s not easy to ride,” she laughs. israelrescue.org Roni also supports Shalva, an Israeli organization that supports children with disabilities, the USC Shoah Foundation founded by Steven Spielberg, and Art with Purpose. shalva.org

THE ROBIN HOOD FOUNDATION Roni’s a regular at Hamptons galas, including Apollo in the Hamptons at Ron Perelman’s house. This year, Jamie Foxx pulled her onto the stage to dance. She and her family also support the Michael Milken Prostate Cancer Foundation event at the Parrish Art Museum. apollotheater.org

THE UN’S AFRICA HOUSE In September, she’s curating the artwork for Africa House, a space used by African heads of state and delegates during the UN General Assembly.

PARISIAN LEATHER JACKETS BY NOUR HAMMOUR Roni is a financial analyst in New York. She graduated from USC, and is now in a USC graduate program founded by music industry moguls Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. Over Labor Day weekend, she’s hosting a presentation for the Parisian designer Nour Hammour. nour-hammour.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE PINK STAR Pink diamonds represent only one tenth of one percent (.0001) of all mined diamonds. Pinks can wholesale for $25,000 to $40,000 per carat. “That’s the pricing that pinks can fetch,” says savvy Jordan Fine, one of the world’s foremost experts on natural color diamonds, and president of JFINE, a boutique firm in Rockefeller Center specializing in jewelry made with pink diamonds. This year the Pink Star diamond sold at auction for over $70 million.

ACCESSIBLY PRICED PINKS Now, JFINE has made the highest quality pink diamonds available at accessible price points. “Not everybody can spend $10 million or $20 million on a stone, so in this collection we have pieces that start at $1,500 retail,” says Fine. “We really wanted to make pink diamonds something that everybody could afford and make a part of their lives.”

J.LO’S COLOR DIAMONDS Consumers have become more aware of color stones, in part because of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, who received a 6-carat pink diamond during her ill-fated engagement to Ben Affleck. J.Lo mended her broken heart later with a 14-carat blue diamond from her ex-husband Marc Anthony. Perhaps, her current beau, Alex Rodriguez, will buy her the Pink Star. Uma Thurman and Adriana Lima are among the fans of jewelry by JFINE.

LONDON JEWELERS The JFINE line is sold in NYC and the Hamptons at London Jewelers. “Now that we’re making jewelry with pink diamonds in them, a lot more people are adopting it for bridal, for special gifts, and for anniversaries,” Fine says. jfineinc.com

CHEF JOSH TANNER

ROBERT’S STEAKHOUSE

NEW YORK PRIME BEEF

CHEF WILL SAVARESE

TORY BURCH Chef Josh Tanner has cooked for many celebrities, including the designer Tory Burch. New York Prime Beef, the premiumbeef cross-country delivery service Tanner runs with Pacifico has Tory Burch as a regular customer in the Hamptons and NYC. Tanner has worked in the culinary industry for most of his life. His titles have included farmer, chef, grocer, buyer, and business executive. He is involved in all the day-to-day activities at the Bronx-based New York Prime Beef, including sourcing, aging, and the distribution of the best steaks on the planet. NYPB personally reviews each order before it’s packed and signed to ensure quality.

FARM IN THE CATSKILLS

Tanner lives on a farm in the Catskills with his wife and four young children, where they are restoring an 1830s former boarding house. They raise sheep, goats, turkeys, and chickens, all free-range and organic. They also host farm stays.

NEW YORK TO ATLANTIC CITY The critically acclaimed executive chef Will Savarese helms Robert’s, one of New York’s top steakhouses. In June, Savarese reopened a Robert’s outpost at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. He’s received three three-star ratings from the New York Times during his career: La Cote Basque, La Cremaillere, and The Tap House, all in NYC.

HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO A seasoned veteran, Chef Savarese also spent time as a private chef. Savarese said, “Being back in Atlantic City is a great thing for me, especially being back at Robert’s.” Saverese says, “I am glad to be a part of the Hard Rock’s opening and hope that it can help bring this city back to life and people back to the Jersey shore.”

AMERICAN WAGYU KOBE-STYLE GOLD LABEL

About fifteen years ago, looking for a more balanced life, he took a position with Whole Foods, where he worked for a decade. Based in Colorado, he and his wife acquired some dairy goats and got their first taste of farming. After moving East, Tanner worked as a consultant for meal-delivery companies like HelloFresh and Blue Apron. Josh is up at the crack of dawn, doing everything on his farm himself, including butchering chickens and turkeys for customers. His kids are following in his footsteps. “They learn about responsibility and that you have to take care of an animal, or it just doesn’t survive.”

Chef Savarese not only oversees every item on the menu, but also ensures food is uniquely prepped. “Americans, in general, always have a love for meat, especially steak. We offer six different cuts of steak, appealing to different people. We also have other great options from pastas to seafood. What truly sets us apart is our on-site dry aging process that I oversee. We go beyond the normal 28-day drying; you’ll taste the difference.” Robert's Steakhouse’s most popular items include the American Wagyu Kobestyle Gold Label cube and seared sea scallops.
