SIBA Staff will be working in the SIBA Hub throughout BeerX UK so if you have any questions about the event itself, where things are happening, or even how you buy beer tokens, then come over and we can help.

There will always be at least one member of staff on the SIBA Hub, but actually most of the time many more Team members will be around (think of the SIBA Hub as our base of operations!) so if you do have questions on specific areas of SIBA business, from Government lobbying and campaigning, to how best to market your beers or use the assured seal, then come over and we will do our best to help put you in touch with the right member of staff.

Opposite the SIBA Hub you will also find the Napthens ‘Legal Lounge’, a dedicated networking and working area for Delegates to use between sessions or whenever you need to catchup on work or emails.

Free water

Please note free water is available from the fountains in the Atrium.

Quiet Zone

Need a reset away from the bustle of the event? Room 22 and the space outside it (up the stairs opposite the entrance to the BeerX hall) is a dedicated quiet zone. No phone calls please!

Whatever the question, the SIBA Hub information desk is where to get the answer!

Richard Naisby The Chairman’s introduction

Welcome to Liverpool and SIBA BeerX 2023. This is the 10th running of our industry-leading exhibition and the biggest and best yet.

We aim to have something for everyone, at whatever stage of a brewing career you are - from the homebrewer looking to turn their hobby into a business; to the grizzled brewhouse veteran - this industry has a habit of setting new challenges and the 2020s are certainly no exception. After a gruelling few years we now have to look to the future. Whether it is the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (Scottish, English or Welsh) or the environmental legislation associated with Net Zero, SIBA BeerX has advice and guidance for your brewery.

None of this would happen without the support of our valued Supplier Associates and the Exhibitors, whose stands are featured throughout the hall. Their contributions and particularly those of our sponsors Kegstar and the stage sponsors (Charles Faram; Breww; Crisp Malt) are vital to be able for us deliver such a vibrant and dynamic event. Thank you.

The organisational centrepiece of SIBA BeerX is our Annual General Meeting, and as your new chairman I look forward to welcoming some lively and informative discussion. The resolutions for debate have come from the eight SIBA regions and the board. They will frame the structure and future of our organisation and it is important that you have your say.

The programme features many notable speakers over both days and our transatlantic keynote address is given by Bob Pease of the Brewers Association.

SIBA BeerX is organised by a small team of incredibly hard working people. I’d like to thank them here and I hope you pass on your appreciation throughout the event.

The networking and social aspect of BeerX is as important as the formal business in the ACC. There is a wide range of fringe events taking place throughout the week in locations around Liverpool.

In the centre of the hall is our Bar. This features the finest beers from around the UK, as decided by you - the brewers. The national champions of the SIBA Independent Beers Awards are judged on Wednesday afternoon. Pete Brown will announce the winners on Thursday evening. Pete is in for a busy couple of days, as he announces the SIBA Business Awards on Wednesday evening. I hope he manages to find time for a social beer. Throughout the event, I hope to join him and as many SIBA members as possible for a chat - and a beer.

Cheers!

CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION 7
2023 15-16TH MARCH, LIVERPOOL 2023

Andy Slee welcome to

Welcome to BeerX, the UKs premier brewing event which aims to show the independent brewery sector at its very best.

This is my first BeerX as SIBA Chief Executive but have experienced great events in previous years. I would especially like to thank the entire SIBA team for the work they have put into making these next few days the best they can possibly be for everyone.

This year we have invested in a new system which will speed your entry into the arena and make sharing details easier between delegates and exhibitors. This will help everyone get maximum benefit from their time in Liverpool

Over the next couple of days there will also be plenty of discussion on a wide range of content, including a keynote talk from Bob Pease of the Brewers Association in America, SIBAs equivalent stateside. Bob is a hugely experienced advocate for craft beer and I personally wish him the warmest of welcomes to Liverpool.

Featuring again in 2023 will be our hugely popular tastings featuring beer from Brew York, Deya, Vault City and a dedicated home-brew sessions led by Andy Parker from Elusive about taking the leap from amateur to professional.

Our annual beer awards will this year include both our inaugural SIBA International and Homebrew Beer category winners to back up winners from our eight regional cask, keg, bottle and can awards

In these challenging times independent brewers have never needed a strong SIBA more so I welcome the brewing world to Liverpool and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the two days.

If brewers can’t get together to talk about their opportunities and challenges over a beer then who can!

Cheers

We are always on the lookout for experienced judges to join our competitions at both our Regional competitions across the UK and our National Finals at BeerX, so if you’re interested simply email beercompetitions@siba. co.uk with a brief outline of your experience, as well as where in the UK you would be available to judge, and we’ll do the rest.

Producing greattasting No and low alcohol beers sustainably

Host: Charlie Gorham (Charles Faram)

Speaker: Sam McMeekin (Gipsy Hill)

Sam McMeekin of Gipsy Hill has big plans for his brewery in 2023 - expanding their range of low and no alcohol beers whilst improving the sustainaility of the brewery itself. As SIBA looks ahead to improving sustainability across the sector, this session gives a snapshot of how one brewery are tackling the issue head-on, whilst responding to the consumer demand for lower alcohol beers.

Co-Founder of Vault City, former homebrewer and Heriott-Watt graduate, Steven has helped build one of the UK’s most celebrated and unique sour-beer breweries. Vault City have made a name for themselves with boundary-pushing beers that deliver a range of flavours few breweries have managed to harness.

Steven and his partner Adele, along with former brewer Jonathan Horn, founded the brewery officially in 2018. But for several years before that, Steven had been brewing on a semi-industrial basis from his own flat, with brew kit in the cellar and beer taps in his kitchen!

Speaker: Sam McMeekin

Sam McMeekin is co-Founder and CEO of Gipsy Hill Brewery. After spending a few years working with NGOs and microfinance institutions in sub-Sharan Africa, Sam moved back to the UK and fell in love with brewing. He got his GCB from the IBD in 2015, an MBA from London Business School, UK in 2012 and a BA from Stanford University, USA in 2005.

Getting access to market via pubs is a huge issue for all independent breweries, but at the same time pub companies recognise the consumer demand for quality, flavoursome craft beer from local brewers.

For many independent breweries pubpartnerships can be the answer, allowing brewers to get their beers on the bar whilst increasing over profitability for the pub-owning company. This sessions sets out the opportunities and pitfalls that face brewers entering into partnerships with pub companies.

Speaker: Rich Craig

Rich has spent the past 20 years in hospitality; managing and building pub businesses with a focus on design and brand. His attention to detail and creative vision has formed Big Smoke’s recognisable look and feel both in its pubs and brewing business.

Yeast & fermentation profile: A comparative tasting of DEYA beers

Host: Neil Walker (SIBA)

Speaker: Gareth Moore (DEYA)

In this tasting session we will be exploring the often forgotten hero in the flavour profile of beers, yeast. The variety of yeast or fermentation method used can have a huge impact not only on the flavour and aroma of a beer, but also it’s carbonation and mouthfeel.

In this tasting we’ll be challenging your palate and asking you to think more about yeast, exploring a range of hugely expressive beers from DEYA.

Speaker: Gareth Moore

Head brewer Gareth Moore joined DEYA from Gloucester Brewery in 2016 and his first beers poured in DEYA’s 800ft2 Taproom in May 2016. Steady Rolling Man, DEYA’s flagship beer established itself as the best pale ale in the UK on Untappd shortly after, while DEYA became the highest rated independent brewery on the site.

The SIBA Craft Beer Report 2023

The SIBA Craft Beer Report is the most definitive annual look at the independent craft beer market in the UK and the challenges faced by the country’s independent brewers. The aim of the SIBA Craft Beer Report is to offer insight and ideas that SIBA members and retail customers can take away and consider when making strategic decisions. To make it as comprehensive as possible, as well as analysing the results of the latest annual SIBA members’ survey, we have also analysed the most recent industry data available and taken a much broader look at the market as it stands in 2023. We have also commissioned some exclusive new consumer

research through YouGov to help uncover underlying trends.

The report has been written and researched by SIBA Independent Brewer magazine’s Editor Caroline Nodder, with input from the wider SIBA team, using the following key statistical sources and reports to help draw out emerging trends and highlight potential future growth areas and opportunities for independent craft brewers and beer retailers.

Don’t miss the presentation of the report’s key findings as part of the launch during the SIBA AGM.

Are you proudly independent?

Six years ago, SIBA launched the Assured Independent British Craft Brewer scheme to help in differentiating our members’ beers from mass produced global brands. Since then the majority of SIBA members have started using the seal on their bottle and can labels, pumpclips, social media and websites – we’ve even seen member taproom floors and delivery vans carrying the seal.

Our 2022 members’ survey found almost all SIBA brewers (96%) are now aware of the scheme, showing the growing importance small brewers place on signalling to consumers that your beers are genuine craft products from a small independent producer.

We have now also launched a simplified version of the seal which is perfect for using where space is at a premium on can labels etc, as well as a Welsh language version for our members in Wales & West who display dual language text on all their products.

If you don’t currently use the seal or would like access to any of the alternative versions, visit the SIBA Members’ Toolbox ‘Filing Cabinet’ and click on the Artwork & Logos section.

Beer drinkers can be sure that wherever they see the seal – be it on a pumpclip, bottle or can label – the craft beer they are drinking is the real thing.

What to look out for in the Budget at BeerX

There will be some political drama at BeerX this year with the Budget falling on the first day (Wednesday). We will be screening the Budget on the Hop Yard Stage from midday so you can watch the build-up during Prime Minister’s Questions before the Chancellor stands up to speak at around 12.30pm. So what should you be looking out for which will impact small breweries?

On the 1 August the big bang changes to the whole of the Alcohol Duty System are planned to come in including converting Small Breweries Relief into Small Producer Relief and introducing the Draught Duty Relief for large containers. We’re expecting that the final details will be announced in the Spring Budget on 15 March including the legislation and guidance.

A key decision is whether the Chancellor increases the Draught Duty Relief from 5%. This is a lower rate on all larger containers over 20 litres in size and SIBA has been calling on the Chancellor to go further and Make it 20% by increasing this relief to 20% to give pubs and small breweries the boost they need. We’ll also be looking out for a workable solution to takeaway beer from pubs and bottle shops which could be banned under the changes. If you don’t catch the Budget then you

can come along to my session on the Alcohol Duty System changes at 2.15pm on Thursday at the Steep Stage where I’ll go through the latest iterations and explore the future beer trends.

The Chancellor will also be making a decision on the headline rate of duty from 1 August. Readers will remember that the rates were frozen last year by one Chancellor in September, then raised again by another Chancellor in October before being frozen until the summer in December. The question is will he freeze them again? They’ll be plenty of pressure on him from politicians and breweries to do so, especially when large scale changes are coming in on the same day.

Energy costs continue to weigh heavily on every brewers’ mind and so are likely to feature in the Chancellor’s Budget. Will he build on the announcement we had earlier in the year on the Energy Bill Discount Scheme and the Energy and Trade intensive Industries (ETII) Scheme? We’d expect at least some further details to be announced explaining how small breweries can apply for ETII and what assistance they will receive. We’d also like the Chancellor to go further and provide assistance to small breweries to reduce their energy use by, for example, installing green technology such as solar panels or CO2 recovery systems. SIBA believes that small breweries would benefit from tailored Government policies that help small companies go green and make the transition to Net Zero.

Sustainability is an area we’ll be covering at BeerX and I’d strongly recommend you attend some

brilliant sessions on Thursday which should coincide with a special announcement on this topic from SIBA. At 1pm on the Future of Brewing Stage we’ll have the Making the move to sustainability session with Zevero and Deya outlining ways to calculate and reduce your carbon emissions. Straight after will be a session exploring the impact that CO2 recapture technology can have on small breweries. Dalum Beverage Equipment will demonstrate their latest technology which has recently been installed at Ramsgate Brewery. With sustainability being a key part of SIBA’s strategy and something that many small breweries lead the way in, these sessions should be top of your list to attend.

I hope you enjoy BeerX as much as I will – and do grab me for a beer and let me know what SIBA and I can do for you.

SIBA Business Awards 2023

RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN THE INDEPENDENT CRAFT BEER INDUSTRY

The SIBA Business Awards seek to congratulate excellence in the brewing industry across a variety of categories, from pump clip, can and bottle design, to efforts taken by brewers to make their business more sustainable, innovative or successful, as well as naming the UK’s best bars, restaurants and retailers of craft beer from independent breweries.

The SIBA Business Awards 2023 also include a new Award for “Empowering People”, seeking to highlight independent craft breweries who go above and beyond for the members of their team; empowering staff to achieve more in their professional career, introducing initiatives and incentives which create a positive working environment, or providing benefits or support mechanisms which encourage a happier healthier life for employees.

“The brewing sector is an incredibly hands-on and collaborative industry and the wellbeing of employees is at the forefront of all successful brewing businesses. This new award seeks to highlight the breweries in the UK who are not only supporting their staff but helping them to have a happier, more successful working life.” Neil Walker, SIBA Business Awards Chair of Judges.

The new categories introduced last year for the “UK’s Best Independent Craft Beer Retailer – Online”, “UK’s Best Independent Craft Brewery Webshop” and “Community Engagement” will also return for the 2023 Awards.

Pete Brown to present the SIBA Business Awards 2023

The SIBA Business Awards 2023 will be presented by acclaimed beer author, journalist, broadcaster and consultant Pete Brown. Named British Guild of Beer Writers’ “Beer Writer of the Year” in 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2021, Pete has won three Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards, been shortlisted twice for the Andre Simon Awards, and in 2020 was named an “Industry Legend” at the Imbibe Hospitality Awards.

This new award names the UK’s best independent craft brewery webshop. Entries should demonstrate how the brewery webshop offers a positive user experience, intuitive and attractive design, and of course excellent customer service. Finalists: Black Sheep, Hand Brew Co, Siren, Wiper + True

For all aspects of effective marketing and communication strategy, including general or specific campaigns, promotions, PR, social media activity, product launches etc.

Community Engagement

Sponsored by: Napthens

Finalists: Adnams, Full Circle, Moongazer, Signature Brew

Best Individual Design

Sponsored by: Croxsons

Finalists: Anspach & Hobday, Full Circle, Red Willowg

For a single design of bottle, can or pump clip that clearly stands out, gains point-of-sale market advantage and ultimately drives the purchase of a brewery product.

Strong traditional designs are welcome, but entries are also sought for contemporary and original artwork that puts a brewery’s beers at the forefront of the evolution of point-of-sale as an essential marketing tool.

Multiple entries from a brewery are welcome, but should be entered separately and any entries which contain a range of designs within a ‘concept’ or ‘brand’ should be entered into the Total Concept Design Category below.
