Žilvinas Kempinas Scarecrow May 11 – August 3 Opening Sunday, May 11 • 2 – 6 PM
Image: Detail of Kakashi, 2013, by Žilvinas Kempinas at Museum Tinguely, Basel, Switzerland. Photo by Daniel Spehl.
Scarecrow is a new site-specific installation by Žilvinas Kempinas, an internationally acclaimed artist based in Queens. Stretching across 250 feet in the park, this is the largest installation in the 28-year history of the park.

Minimal and magical, the sculpture is a kinetic pathway composed of over 200 mirrored poles connecting energetic slopes of silver Mylar ribbon overhead. The continuous motion of the ribbon, as it responds to the wind-currents, echoes the natural flowing of the water nearby and stands as a shimmering optical horizon alongside the East River. This ambitious sculpture is the artist’s first major outdoor installation in the United States and is made possible, in part, by generous gifts from the Lewben Art Foundation and Martin Z. Margulies.
Paweł Althamer Queen Mother of Reality a Performa comission for Performa 13 May 11 – August 3 Opening Sunday, May 11 • 2 – 6 PM
Image: Queen Mother of Reality by Paweł Althamer.
10
11
Queen Mother of Reality is a monumental, mixed media sculpture of an elegantly reclining figure that is peacefully situated in the shaded southern section of the park. The sculpture, commissioned by Performa, was originally presented as part of the Polish Pavilion Without Walls for Performa 13. The artwork is dedicated to and inspired by “Queen Mother” Dr. Delois Blakely, a U.S. Ambassador of Goodwill to Africa. Queen Mother of Reality serves as a call to highlight the numerous displaced and homeless of New York City—Dr. Blakely’s paramount cause. Continuing Althamer’s dedication to social collaboration, the foundation of most of his work, Queen Mother of Reality will engage audiences through interactive programming co-organized by Socrates and the artist that will invoke Dr. Blakely’s pursuits of social justice and community building. The first program is a Mother’s Day celebration during the opening on May 11, featuring art-making workshops presented by Minor Miracles Foundation and an experimental social project titled Nails Across America by artist Breanne Trammell. Queen Mother of Reality at Socrates is presented in collaboration with Performa, and in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
Austin+Mergold SuralArk Folly 2014 in partnership with The Architectural League of New York May 11 – August 3 Opening Sunday, May 11 • 2 – 6 PM SuralArk by the architectural firm Austin+Mergold is the winning proposal for Folly 2014, an annual design / build competition co-organized by The Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park. This residency and exhibition explores the intersections among architecture, design, and sculpture through an interpretation of the architectural folly.

Conflating the form of an overturned ship and a typical suburban house, SuralArk will provide shelter for respite and contemplation for thousands of park visitors this summer. This large-scale installation, part ship and part house, spans over 50 feet with an elevation of 16 feet, but despite this scale it does not provide escape from the rising water levels at the edge of Socrates park, just merely the suggestion of future or past rescuing. Representative of the increasingly blurred lines between city and suburban environments and rural living, Austin+Mergold’s SuralArk is covered in a patchwork of vinyl siding – a material often used on nearby queens residences. At Socrates, SuralArk is light permeable and emits a warm glow as the sun bleeds through its surface and is illuminated from within at night. Folly 2014 is made possible by a generous grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
Meschac Gaba Citoyen Du Monde Broadway Billboard 2014 May 11 – August 3 Opening Sunday, May 11 • 2 – 6 PM
Image: Detail of Citoyen Du Monde, 2012 by Meschac Gaba.
14
15
Citoyen du Monde, the park’s spring Broadway Billboard by Beninese artist Meschac Gaba, is the artist’s vision for a global flag. Created by elongating individual flags from every country in the world into narrow triangles that converge at a central point, this optically spectacular work presents an image of idealism and optimism for resolution of the difficulties and crises that divide our world. The singularity of each flag is lost in the rhythm of the composition as is the case in the age of globalization where national borders merge into the international. Citoyen Du Monde is presented courtesy of the artist, Stevenson, Cape Town and Johannesburg, and Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York.

16
17
The park’s annual fall exhibition features 15 new commissions by the 2014 Emerging Artist Fellows. EAF14 artists are selected through a highly competitive application process and work in the park’s outdoor studio throughout the summer to create site-specific sculpture and installations. Their work responds to the park’s landscape in mysterious, compelling, and, at times, provocative ways. Rather than being a zeitgeist or thematic exhibition, each artist has a distinct artwork that embodies his or her individuality, passion, and exploration of art in the public realm. During the course of the summer, the public can view and experience the artists creating and installing their works in the park. EAF14 is made possible due to the generosity of the Jerome Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Community Trust.

In January 2014 Socrates Sculpture Park opened a new exhibition at 1285 Avenue of the Americas Gallery for its first Manhattan presentation in over two decades: Fact of the Matter is a special exhibition that explores the intimate and, at times, difficult relationship that is forged between material and artist. Fact of the Matter brings together nine sculptors, including newly created artworks specifically for this exhibition. Despite a range of backgrounds and experience -- some of the participating artists are at the start of their careers, while others have been internationally recognized for decades -- each has developed an intense dialogue and relationship with a material muse, whether it be steel, plastic, ceramic, feathers, rubber, or wood. Every artist in Fact of the Matter has also presented work at Socrates Sculpture Park and in this way, reflects the organization’s rich history and ongoing commitment to sculpture. Fact of the Matter is sponsored by 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery, in partnership with Jones Lang LaSalle, as a community-based public service. 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery 6th Ave b/t 51st and 52nd Streets Hours: Open Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 6:00pm
Off-Site Exhibition: Parting Jerome W Haferd and K Brandt Knapp July 2013 – July 2014
20
21
Parting, by NY-based architects Jerome W Haferd and K Brandt Knapp, is the inaugural installation for The Lot, a new public site that combines art and green space within a 10,000 sq. ft. lot in Long Island City, Queens— one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city and home to a thriving arts scene. Installed within the landscape of the lot, Parting is a dynamic complement to the new architecture of the neighborhood. It is a sequence of spaces created through a game of occupation, play, and passage that invites curiosity and exploration within thresholds and frames. Parting is Haferd and Knapp’s second iteration of their 2012 installation at Socrates, titled Curtain, which was presented as a part of Folly 2012. Parting is a partnership between Socrates Sculpture Park and Rockrose Development Corp.

Kite Flight Saturday, May 10 • 11 AM – 3 PM
This season the Bike Parade will be led down Vernon Blvd. by Long Island City High School’s very own marching band! The LIC High School Marching Band made its debut in 2012, bursting onto the music scene by performing at sporting events, grand openings, and award ceremonies, and recently played for the inauguration ceremony of Council Member Costa Constantinides. Comprised of 41 dedicated and enthusiastic musicians, most of whom started playing their instrument in high school and love sharing their music with the wider community.
Using recycled materials, children and their families draw inspiration from the park’s fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline to build expressive kites, and then fly them in the park. Artist Miguel Luciano returns to lead a workshop centered on Caribbean kite traditions. Participants will produce handmade paper kites, personalizing them with text and graphics to form poems or personal statements in the sky, which explore ideas of flying, freedom, and community. Workshop space is limited and participation will be on a first come, first served basis. This action-adventure tale is one of William Shakespeare’s most fantastical creations: part tragedy, part comedy, and part romance. When King Cymbeline’s only daughter secretly marries against his wishes, the King banishes his daughter’s newlywed groom. With war looming and an evil stepmother plotting, the spunky princess ventures into the wild to find her true love. Through Cymbeline’s journey, Shakespeare examines a central issue of his time and ours: faith. The Two Gentlemen of Verona Sunday, August 10 • 4:30 – 6:30 PM Kids Program: 4:30 PM Performance: 5 – 6:30 PM A slapstick comedy about love, friendship, betrayal, forgiveness… and a dog. Young Proteus only has eyes for his hometown sweetheart, until he sets eyes on his best friend’s sweetheart. This zany tale of romantic rivals is replete with bandits, disguises, and one of Shakespeare’s funniest clowns, while asking the question: Is all really fair in love?

Socrates Sculpture Park is the only site in the New York Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit largescale sculpture and multi-media installations in a unique outdoor environment that encourages strong interaction between artists, artworks and the public. The park’s existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization, and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity, and improvement of our urban environment. Founded in 1986, Socrates is celebrating 28 years of exhibitions and programming. During this period, the park has been host to over 1,000 artists facilitating the production and exhibition of outdoor artworks and performances. We would like to thank all our supporters, partners, artists, performers, teachers, and public for making Socrates Sculpture Park an extraordinary place. We look forward to seeing you in the park!
