Thirty years ago a bold plan was launched by the visionary artist Mark di Suvero to transform an abandoned waterfront site into a vibrant urban space for producing and presenting art alongside diverse community programming—free of charge and accessible to all. Mark had the dream, vision, and fierce drive to create a place for artists and a green space for the neighborhood. Artists and the community have been, and will be, the driving force of the park—historically, today, and into the future. Socrates as an organization believes in the transformative power of art, community building, and the stewardship of our natural world. Socrates takes these beliefs and puts them into action everyday within an open, welcoming environment. For 30 years, we have put these ideals into practice by supporting the realization of over 1,000 artist projects, cultivating an urban oasis, and serving our community through arts education and creative experiences for thousands of families and children of all ages. I invite you to join us throughout the season to celebrate three decades of Socrates and am thrilled to share with you our 2016 Exhibitions & Public Programs, a special anniversary season that builds upon past accomplishments and looks ahead to the park’s future. Our spring exhibition, LANDMARK, will consider this unique site in the context of local and global issues by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural, political, ecological, and demographic transformations. I am also pleased to introduce new programs, including a monthly jazz series and the debut of the Young Dancemakers Company, to our expanding schedule of events and performances. We are incredibly grateful for strong partnerships—many longstanding, others new this season—with more than 50 civic and cultural partners; together, we are able to offer a dynamic range of programs, from creating jobs for local residents to presenting international films, for more than 150,000 people annually. We are also grateful to our Board of Directors, and our individual, foundation, and government supporters, whose generosity ensures that park admission and every program is offered FREE. Every Day. 365 days a year. What makes the park so special is not any one singular activity, but rather the totality of the creative ecology and spirit that is cultivated here. When I tell someone I work at Socrates Sculpture Park, more often than not, I am greeted with a spontaneous response, “I love Socrates.” It is the kind of place that engenders deep attachment and appreciation for its distinctive role in the cultural life of the city. I want to thank the extraordinary staff, as well as our artists, partners, community, and ardent supporters for making Socrates such a wonderful place. — John Hatfield, Executive Director

FEATURING PROJECTS BY ABIGAIL DEVILLE BRENDAN FERNANDES CARY LEIBOWITZ JESSICA SEGALL CASEY TANG HANK WILLIS THOMAS MEG WEBSTER and a video series commissioned by ARTPORT_MAKING WAVES
In celebration of Socrates Sculpture Park’s thirtieth anniversary this year, we present LANDMARK, a park-wide series of eight artist projects that address the singular history and vision of the park, while looking forward to its future. LANDMARK’s series of commissions and projects mark the land literally and symbolically, addressing the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time. Each piece engages with the terrain of Socrates uniquely, whether through the site’s physical topography, diverse neighborhood, ecology, or social history. Together, these works share an impulse to reclaim and revitalize, and thereby reinforce founding principles of the park. Some projects physically mark the land in striking manners, while others are more elusive, dispersed, and ephemeral. At 70-feet in diameter, Concave Room for Bees, a new earthwork by MEG WEBSTER, anchors the exhibition. As a living sculptural installation that will evolve over time, it comprises more than 400 cubic yards of fertile soil reaching six feet high, planted with flowers, herbs, and shrubs that attract pollinating creatures. Visitors are invited to enter the work and experience a multisensory mix of botanical aromas, insect hums, dewy air, and vibrantly colored flora. LANDMARK is made possible, in part, with major support from the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation.

Several LANDMARK projects directly address the intricate interaction between human and environmental forces: Half Moon by ABIGAIL DEVILLE utilizes found materials and simultaneously bears witness to and transforms public neglect, decay, and marginalization. Resonating with the site’s historic role as ferry slip and landfill, as well as its new position in a post-industrial neighborhood, the sculpture addresses issues of migration and immigration. JESSICA SEGALL’S Fugue in Bb is a salvaged piano harp turned into an observational musical beehive. As the active bee colony interacts with the piano strings, the piece becomes a sound installation, as well as an homage to nineteenth-century Astoria, which was once a major industrial port and hub of piano manufacturing. CASEY TANG’S Urban Forest Lab has grown into a self-sustaining entity over the years. Through successive plantings of different flora, the forest garden becomes a living repository of perennial vegetables, where visitors can explore various concepts of sustainability, as well as human relationships with nature, ecology, agriculture, and food. Housed in a red shipping container is an anthology of videos from the series, Cool Stories for When The Planet Gets Hot, presented by ARTPORT_making waves. Compiled from the organization’s biennial competitions of art videos that address climate change, these stories link the park’s local plot of land to the global dialogue surrounding climate change, stewardship, and sustainability.

Elevated at the main entrance is HANK WILLIS THOMAS’ From Cain’t See in the Mornin’ Till Cain’t See at Night (from Strange Fruit), 2012, part of Socrates Sculpture Park’s Broadway Billboard series. Thomas’ striking billboard confronts the viewer head-on as the first image the visitor sees upon entering the park, stimulating a dialogue on the relationship between land, labor, American history, culture, and race. As part of LANDMARK, artists have also contributed subtle gestures or interventions that address the park’s social role within the community. Customized caution tape, entitled Marked Space, by BRENDAN FERNANDES confounds an administrative mechanism, provoking questions about the language of authority and assumptions about borders and boundaries. With Honk If U Love Socrates Sculpture Park, CARY LEIBOWITZ emblazons the park’s Bobcat loader with playful bumper stickers that undercut the seriousness of this prototypical emblem of masculinity. Highlighting Socrates as both a social space and place for making, Open Seating is a series of open design chairs created by JONATHAN ODOM and painted by volunteers, staff, and youth participants in the park’s education programs.

HOU DE SOUSA STICKS, 2016
Presented in partnership with The Architectural League of New York The Folly program has traditionally investigated the intersection between sculpture and architecture through the conceptual framework of “follies”— temporary structures that intentionally serve no utilitarian purpose. This year, marking the program’s fifth and the park’s thirtieth anniversaries, Folly 2016 builds on past projects to fuse form with utility, or FOLLY to FUNCTION. The result is a durable structure that explores the relationship between art and architecture, while also creatively enhancing the park’s education studio, where more than 10,000 students participate annually in art-making classes. HOU DE SOUSA is the winner of FOLLY to FUNCTION — the 2016 competition presented by Socrates Sculpture Park and The Architectural League of New York. Their winning project, Sticks, is a simple lattice assembly of standard dimensional lumber that improves the education studio by providing flexible shelter and shade. The inner layer of this structural exoskeleton can be used as shelving, display areas, or as a trellis system. Sticks exceeds the realm of the functional by playfully illustrating its own design and construction. Finally, its porous façade reflects the park’s spirit of accessibility and dedication to transparency of process. We thank our steadfast collaborators, The Architectural League of New York, and our visionary guest jurors: Jarrod Beck, Artist and 2012 Emerging Artist Fellow; Stella Betts, LEVENBETTS; Lauren Crahan, Freecell Architecture; and Giuseppe Lignano, LOT-EK. Folly 2016 is made possible, in part, with major support from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

The Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition is a fundamental element of Socrates Sculpture Park’s visual arts programming and a highly anticipated showcase for exceptional artists. This competitive summer residency program and exhibition annually awards fifteen artists the opportunity to envision, produce, and exhibit sculpture, performance, and installations in the park. In a city where there is a premium on space and production facilities, this opportunity provides a unique platform with rare resources for artists to create large-scale sculpture in the public realm. To mark the park’s 30th anniversary, Socrates challenged artists to propose projects for EAF16 that specifically address social, ecological, or political issues pertinent to the history, present, and future of the park. Between May and September, these fifteen selected artists will work on-site, whether within the outdoor artist studios or on park grounds, to create original works for the fall exhibition. We are grateful for the participation and insight of our EAF16 Curatorial Advisors, Larissa Harris, Curator, Queens Museum of Art, and Amanda Hunt, Assistant Curator, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and thank them for thoughtfully reviewing this year’s proposals. EAF16 was made possible, in part, with major support from the Jerome Foundation and the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation.

SATURDAYS 12–3 PM
Saturday Sculpture Workshops (cont’d) May 21 Gigantic Sculptures Made Small with Linda Ganjian Imagine you were given the opportunity to design a gigantic sculpture that would take up the entire park. What would you do? Would you “glam” it up, making a shiny glittery disco ball on a pedestal, or would you build an elegant skyscraper with a playground on every floor? Using an assemblage approach, we will realize that sculpture on a smaller scale as a model. We will start with a cardboard base outlined with the park’s landscape. Then we will let our imaginations run wild! We’ll use cardboard, paper, pipe cleaners, fabric and trim, and all sorts of odds and ends to realize the unrealizable. May 28 In the Neighborhood with Yana Dimitrova What makes a city a city? What do we need in our communities to call a place home? How can we design a space that is comfortable, empowering, exciting, walkable, and is a safe city for all? In this workshop participants will be led through a series of activities to help them understand city systems and their meaning, while also experimenting with various found objects, paper, and other materials. Participants will first design their own neighborhoods, then collaborate to create literal bridges to connect them and make a city. June 4 Nation Building with Zaq Landsberg Have you ever imagined creating your own nation? During this workshop, participants will make their own flags and mythologies. Employing a mix of drawing, graphic design, and creative writing, participants will also think about their project in relationship to a larger global context. By developing their own national identities, participants can redefine and shape the local environment they live in. June 11 (begins at 11 AM) LIC Bike Parade Transform your bicycle, tricycle, or scooter into a mobile work of art and then flaunt it in our annual LIC Bike Parade! Artists will also be leading workshops in spoke cards, banners, and a large-scale collaborative human-powered parade float. 35

We’ll start with an array of socks and other materials to create animal puppets, such as giraffes, elephants, monkeys, caterpillars, and friendly monster puppets. You will learn the basics of puppet-making and how to add unique features using fun accessories! June 25 Tin Can Totems with Paul Duncan Bring in your used, medium-sized tin can to create a recycled totemic sculpture. Based around Jamaican sculptural techniques utilizing raw material, you can make your own metal sculpture by flattening a tin can and combining it with found objects and other common items. This sculpture, with its tree-like structure, is designed to bring elements of nature into your otherwise urban design. July 2 Constellation Poetry with Carolyn Ferrucci Engage your senses and create your own Galaxy at Socrates Sculpture Park! Using simple writing and drawing prompts, participants will observe their surroundings and create constellations based on what they see. When everyone adds their constellations together, we will create a mini-Galaxy out of our connected dots. July 9 (begins at 11 AM) Festival of Kites & Kayaks Using recycled materials, children and their families draw inspiration from the park’s fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline to build expressive kites and then fly them in the park. Teaching artists from Socrates and The Noguchi Museum will lead workshops for participants of all ages to produce and personalize handmade kites that explore ideas of flying, freedom, and community. July 16 Sailing Away with Linda Ganjian Make your own fantastical sailboat in celebration of City of Water Day! Add sails, flags, banners, or pictures of your pet–anything that expresses who you are and what you love. Take the boats out for a spin in the river or in your bathtub. 36

After several tries at this new technique, participants will choose one drawing to elaborate on. Using various materials such as pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, beads, fabric and other sculptural objects, participants will transform their drawings into sculptural drawings that bring to mind the “likeness” of their family members. September 17 Dreamcatcher with Pam Reyes Let’s transform the education area into a largescale dreamcatcher! Using dreams as inspiration, participants will create a sculptural object that they will attach to a web-like structure made of fabric and strings. Families are also encouraged to elaborate, reassemble and modify the “dreamcatcher” to suit their dream objects. The workshop will result in an accumulative, collaborative installation. September 24 Memory Maps with Pasqualina Azzarello As Saturday Sculpture Workshops come to a close, participants will be prompted to reflect and identify cherished memories from Socrates Sculpture Park or their own local neighborhoods.
