May 12 – July 7 Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PM Opening day performances by Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture In collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI), Socrates Sculpture Park presents do it (outside), an exhibition conceived of and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. With historical antecedents in Dada and Fluxus, do it (outside) is a selection of artists’ instructions interpreted by other artists, performers, community groups, and the public all within an exhibition space designed specifically for Socrates by Christoff : Finio Architecture. In the last 20 years, versions of do it have been presented in over 50 venues worldwide, giving new meaning to the concept of the “Exhibition in Progress.” do it (outside) at Socrates will be the first presentation of the exhibition in New York City and the first to be presented completely outdoors in a public art venue. Exhibits Folly 2013
May 12 – August 4 Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PM tree wood by Toshihiro Oki architect p.c., with team members Toshihiro Oki, Jen Wood, and Jared Diganci, is the winning proposal for Folly, an annual design and build competition organized by The Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park. This residency and exhibition explore the intersections between architecture, design, and sculpture through an interpretation of the architectural folly. Especially popular among the Romantics of the 18th and 19th centuries, architectural follies are small-scale structures, which often have no discernible purpose and are generally placed within a garden or landscape as a means to draw the eye to specific points or to frame a view. The folly is a perfect subject for architects to investigate materiality, spatial interaction, and concepts about our built environment. This architectural folly is about the ideals of Nature and Man-made coexisting in our increasingly crowded world. This simple structure is composed entirely of 2×4 studs and nails bought from the local hardware stores. The trees fill the structure. A single chandelier will hang inside among the leaves and chime in the gentle winds.

An installation by Heather Rowe May 12 – August 4 Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PM Brooklyn-based artist Heather Rowe investigates the transitional space between architecture, sculpture, and installation through perspectival framing, formal inversion, and material deconstruction. Rowe’s latest work, Beyond the Hedges (Slivered Gazebo), is an installation of spatial slices and fractured corridors presented outdoors at Socrates Sculpture Park. Beyond the Hedges (Slivered Gazebo) inverts the routine relationships we have with our surroundings by restructuring the familiar and re-imagining architectural experiences. While we often experience architecture in a state of distraction, Rowe invites us to examine its details recombined as sculpture. Beyond the Hedges interprets the traditional gazebo or trellis—structures typically placed within a park to frame picturesque views—as a sliced and cropped dimensional space that, sandwiched between pieces of plywood, becomes the framed view. Suspended within the plywood shapes are fragile moments of the garden pavilion, frozen in precarious states of decay or undoing, that are inspired by the line drawings from Peter Joel Harrison’s illustrated book Gazebos and Trellises (see image left).

2013 Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition September 8, 2013 – March 30, 2014 Opening Sunday, September 8 • 2 – 6 PM This annual exhibition features 15 new commissions by the 2013 Emerging Artist Fellows. EAF13 artists work in the Park’s outdoor studio throughout the summer to create sculpture and installations that respond to the landscape in mysterious, compelling, and, at times, provocative ways. Rather than being a zeitgeist or thematic exhibition, each artist has a distinct artwork that embodies his or her individuality, passion, and exploration of art in the public sphere. Kite Flight Saturday, May 11 • 11 AM – 2 PM Socrates and The Noguchi Museum present this annual kite event. Using recycled materials, children and their families draw inspiration from the Park’s fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline to build and decorate kites, and then fly them in the Park.

LIC Bike Parade Saturday, June 8 11 AM – 3 PM: Bike Repairs / Helmet Fitting & Giveaway / Workshops 3 PM: Parade along Vernon Blvd. (leaving from Broadway entrance gate) 3 – 5 PM: Waterfront Celebration at Queensbridge Park
In preparation for the parade, children and their families are invited to repair their bikes with Recycle-A-Bicycle; get free helmets and fittings with the Department of Transportation; and decorate their bikes with Socrates artists. Summer Solstice Celebration Friday, June 21 • 5 PM until Dusk Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ annual Solstice event to welcome the summer and celebrate the longest day of the year! Be creative in Solstice art-making workshops presented in partnership with Free Style Arts Association, Materials for the Arts, The Noguchi Museum, and Queens Museum of Art; get your face painted by Agostino Arts; have a picnic; and enjoy the view as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline! This season Socrates taps into ancient Mayan energy while we recharge our mind, body, and spirit. Participate in a special Solstice ritual performed by Urban Shaman Mama Donna, practice yoga at sunset, or take part in an event-culminating, community drum circle with Toca & Alé Alé Drummers... but not before the evening gets kicked off with an exhibition of action-packed, high-flying Lucha Libre! (Masked Mexican Wrestling).

Halloween Harvest Festival Saturday, October 19 • 11 AM – 3 PM Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ annual Halloween Harvest Festival. Make a costume with Socrates artists; listen to live music; enjoy a special art-making workshop with Free Style Arts Association; get your face painted by Agostino Arts; enter your dog in our annual Canine Costume Contest; and try harvest foods from local restaurants. This season, invoke the spirits of Queens as we share the stories and legends of this historic waterway. Join the Greater Astoria Historical Society for a walking tour and learn about the horrors and mysteries of the treacherous East River, from churning whirlpools and electric eels. Starting under the Hell Gate Bridge in Astoria Park (Shore Blvd.), tour participants will stroll through Old Astoria Village and walk along the East River waterfront to Socrates Sculpture Park where their journey will culminate with ghostly performances of the area’s haunted history, led by the Hell Gate Kid! the little OPERA THEATRE of NY presents Liberté, Egalité, et Fraternité Sunday, July 14 • 3 – 4 PM the little OPERA THEATRE of NY presents an afternoon of French opera including the work of Chevalier de Saint-George. LOTNY is a chamber opera company whose goal is to strip the artifice away from opera and present it as an intimate experience, enabling the audience to reconnect with the music, the performers, and the story. The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series Thursday, August 1 • 7 – 8 PM Produced in association with SummerStage and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, The Met’s Summer Recital Series returns to Socrates for its third season, featuring three talented young Met singers performing arias and duets from a variety of operas.

Hip to Hip Theatre Company celebrates 7 years of Free Shakespeare in the Park Enjoy a tragedy one week and a comedy the next, performed in repertory by a professional troupe of actors. The Tempest Sunday, August 4 • 5 – 6:30 PM After twelve years on a deserted island, a deposed Duke is now a mighty sorcerer. Love’s Labor’s Lost Sunday, August 11 • 5 – 6:30 PM The King of Navarre and three noblemen take an oath to devote their lives to scholarship for three years – without the company of women. When the Princess of France and three ladies-in- waiting arrive, passion and puns abound. Will the oath hold? Or will the men succumb to the game of love? In this screwball romantic comedy, Shakespeare takes wordplay and wit to dizzying heights. Dance at Socrates Presented in partnership with Norte Maar August 5 – 31, Performances: Saturdays • 3 – 4:30 PM (weather permitting) Hosted by Socrates, Norte Maar, renowned for their cross-disciplinary collaborative projects, presents a new choreographic residency and performance series, bringing New York-based choreographers and their dancers to the Park. Each week during the month of August, a new choreographer will be in residence creating new works on a site-specific stage. Visitors to the Park will witness the working process of these dance-makers and experience fully produced, cutting edge performance every Saturday. SkowheganPerforms Saturday, September 28 • 1 – 5 PM Occupying the entire Park, SkowheganPerforms invites Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture alumni to activate Socrates with an afternoon of performance. The site-specific works are interspersed throughout the Park’s field of public artworks, inspired by Socrates’ unique outdoor setting.

Outdoor Cinema 2013 Celebrating the Cultural Diversity of Queens Presented in partnership with AT&T Wednesdays, July 3 – August 21 • 7 PM (weather permitting) Socrates Sculpture Park, in collaboration with Film Forum and Rooftop Films, presents this annual international film festival, which focuses on a different country or culture each Wednesday evening. Launching a new curatorial partnership with Film Forum for our 15th anniversary year, this program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the cool waterfront breeze as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and, for yoga, bring a mat or a towel. Yoga Saturdays • 9:30 – 10:30 AM & 11 AM – 12 PM Sundays • 10 – 11 AM Kripalu Yoga is a system of Hatha Yoga that integrates body postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, and meditation. Taught by Monique Schubert and Yojaida Estrella, participants are encouraged to integrate their yoga practices with this very special waterfront environment of nature and art. Tai Chi Sundays • 11 AM – 12 PM Led by certified instructors from the Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA, these classes offer the opportunity to learn Taoist Tai Chi, improve one’s health, relax, and exercise in an outdoor setting among changing exhibitions of contemporary sculpture.

Adult Workshops Design/Build Sponsored by Build It Green! NYC Sundays • 2 PM – 4 PM Learn skills to combine art, engineering, design, and construction during these workshops for adults, held in the Park’s outdoor studio. Join instructor Luz Flemming as he guides you to create simple yet well-crafted furnishings to take home. Many of the projects are derived directly from Italian designer Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione DIY furniture designs, featured in Socrates spring exhibition do it (outside). A small materials fee is required. Reduced fee is available for those that would like to take advantage of more than one workshop. Bench, from an Enzo Mari design May 19 Learn to use reclaimed materials to build a bench for your living room or yard, while using basic techniques for structure and aesthetic. Lamp May 26 Use household items to design and make an area lamp, with an emphasis on the use of commonly discarded items. Coffee Table, from an Enzo Mari design June 2 Make your own coffee table using existing materials and supplies, while learning how to give the table your own personal finishing touches. Frame June 9 Build a frame for your favorite photograph, painting, or text, and then bring the frame to life with decoration of your design. Participants are encouraged to bring items to adorn their frames. Chair, from an Enzo Mari design June 16 & 23 This workshop will focus on the construction of an indoor/outdoor chair. Being one of the more advanced designs of the summer, this workshop will span two Sundays and will challenge the participants to build a structure that will be strong and beautiful. Pillow June 30 Take reclaimed materials to design and create a pillow for your couch, chair, pet, or footstool. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own reclaimed materials, whether it be used jeans, shirts, jackets, or dresses with cool patterns.

Days of Heroes April 11 – May 18 • 3:30 – 5:30 PM In collaboration with Minor Miracles and City Year, participants will work on weekly lessons plans relating to exciting and rewarding careers in the New York City Police Department (NYPD), New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and Emergency Medical Services Division (EMT), the Urban Park Rangers, and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This 6 week, creative arts workshop will intertwine career exploration, fitness, life skills, and self-empowerment, introducing participants to NYC’s most courageous professionals. Participants will to meet face-to-face with decorated professionals to hear about life on the job and to celebrate the bravery of hometown heroes. LeAp’s Public Art Program empowers young people to have a voice in their communities by expressing themselves on major social issues through the creation and public exhibition of art. Young Choreographers Program Presented in partnership with Norte Maar August, Performances: Saturdays • 3 – 4:30 PM (weather permitting) Presented in conjunction with Dance at Socrates, this public program offers four young choreographers (ages 14-18) an opportunity to make a new short dance with guidance from a Norte Maar choreographer in residence at the Park. Challenge your imagination and learn some tricks to create your own mobile by re-purposing simple household and recycled materials. Dream-Big Catchers with Janelle Iglesias May 25 Learn to create your own version of a Native American Ojibwe dream catcher. Do you sometimes have nightmares? Have you ever watched your pet dream? Do you have big goals for your future? Dream catchers were created to help clean the air of bad dreams so the good dreams could have a clear path to your mind and heart. Using natural materials from the Park, learn traditional and new techniques to create a personalized dream catcher to take home as a gift or hang above your bed as a charm. Heads on Sticks with Beth Garrett June 1 Repurpose your plastic bags and help save the environment! Come experience how you can turn your plastic bags into expressive puppet-like heads that we can stick in the ground like a scarecrow or raise up as we march around the Park in a parade. You will discover the beauty in the color and print of the plastic bags while working in this environmentally friendly, sculptural art form. Extreme Makeover - Bike Edition June 8 • 11 AM – 3 PM Transform your bicycle, tricycle, or scooter into a mobile work of art and then flaunt it in our annual LIC Bike Parade!

Blast to the Past: DIY Lava Lamps with MicroEmpowering June 15 Create a lava lamp using everyday household items and recycled materials. These vibrant, mesmerizing lamps give a retro feel to any room, while also teaching participants basic scientific theory. Artists Studio: DIY Paints with MicroEmpowering June 22 Travel back in time and learn how the old masters made paint. Using all organic materials you too can produce vivid, rich colors to begin creating your very own masterpiece. Produce Art with Molly Smith June 29 Using produce from our Greenmarket, explore a variety of ways to create art! You can paint with a vivid rainbow of colors made from vegetables and stamp patterns and shapes from the fascinating interiors of cut vegetables. Upcycled Art with Bernard Klevickas and Barbara Lubliner July 6 Make a collaborative sculpture while recycling plastic waste. Learn techniques to transform plastic bottles and scraps into sculptural elements that will become part of a beautiful, glistening hanging sculpture. Plaster Casting the Fantastic with Lars Fisk July 13 Using clay and plaster, make fantastical, whimsical objects from a mold that can be painted, decorated, carved, or made in multiples. Landscape Translation with Rachel Higgins July 20 Like extraterrestrials trying to understand a new planet, participants will chart and re-discover the Park as a site for exploration. With an introduction to simple printmaking techniques, we will create physical impressions of our environment by creating colorful texture rubbings and prints of the surrounding surfaces. Resist and Deposit with Travis Boyer July 27 While discussing the art of resist dying as it exists on many continents, we’ll look at inspirational materials and create a one of a kind cold wax to dye fabrics using stamps, brushes, and a small Indigo dye vat. DaDa Hats and Pop Art Heads with Travis Boyer August 3 Costumes everyone! In this craft action workshop, create narrative headpieces from your wildest imaginations. Whatever Floats Your Boat with Lillian Gerson In collaboration with Astoria Boaters and Long Island City Community Boathouse August 10 We’ll make miniature toy boats and rafts from a variety of materials and set them to sail. While we learn about the history of NYC’s waterfronts, we will experiment with how to make our own sculptures float. Then, we’ll test our boats in a kiddie pool before a group launch from kayaks at nearby Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove.

Wearable Works of Art with Lina Puerta August 17 During a walk around the Park, we’ll collect interesting objects whether natural or not. Such found pieces will then be turned into wearable works of art – necklaces, pins, bracelets, and more! Participants may also bring recyclables from home, such as plastic shopping bags and bottle caps. Mixed Media Weaving with Free Style Arts Association August 24 Learn to create your own dynamic weavings made of a diversity of repurposed “textiles” such as leaves, sticks, plastic bags, ribbon scraps, and more overlooked but ever-present supplies. Plastic Bag Couture with John Hatfield August 31 Have an embarrassing stash of those thin plastic shopping bags in your apartment? Seem like a waste? Turn them into a large fashionable tote bag of your own brilliant design. This simple cut and fuse process with an iron turns throwaways into a colorful, customized tote bag. And the Winner is... with Elissa Goldstone September 7 Show the world that you’re a Socrates All-Star and hit one out of the Park! Using a variety of decorations and paint, make your own trophies, medals, and championship rings to award yourself for being Major League material. Summer Memory Box with Linda Ganjian September 14 What are your favorite memories from the summer? How can you recreate them? Inspired by the art of Joseph Cornell, we will use a variety of traditional and non-traditional art materials to make memory boxes. We will sculpt and paint, cut and glue, assemble and embellish, and add glitter when necessary, as we find ways to represent our summer stories in a neatly packaged container. Concrete Poetry with Seldon Yuan September 21 Have a favorite word or a word that you think is funny or interesting? How about ‘Lollypop,’ or ‘Banana,’ or maybe your own name? Turn your word into 3-dimensional sculpture... literally. We will rearrange our crafted words to see how their location changes their meaning. Words can be much more than just words! Fiesta Time with Shaun Leonardo September 28 Welcome to the Mexican tradition of piñatas. Piñatas are brightly colored papier-mache sculptures, filled with treats and bashed open during festive events. Participants will learn different techniques on how to decorate the papier-mache and plaster skin of piñatas that will be filled and delightfully smashed!

Summer Outdoor Art-Making Workshops Presented in partnership with Con Edison.
Weekdays, July 8 - August 30 10 AM – 12 PM & 1 PM – 3 PM These free workshops offer diverse groups of children from neighborhood youth agencies, community groups, summer schools, and day camps the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities inspired by exhibitions at the Park. Artists run two sessions of their workshop each day of the week and teach children fundamental and contemporary art-making techniques. Groups can sign up for a single workshop or a combination of weekly workshops. Registration and scheduling will be on a first come, first served basis. Note: For groups only, by pre-registration (deposit required, returned upon arrival) Get in Shape With Your Own Shape with Mads Lynnerup July 8 – 12 What does art and physical exercise have in common? Using wire and plaster gauze, participants will make their own unique shapes and transform their sculptures into a creative piece of fitness equipment. Once all the sculptures are completed the whole class will do a group fitness exercise together using their own sculptures. Exquisite Corpse Mud Speak with Rachel Higgins July 15 – 19 Get your hands dirty and uncover the imagination of your friends! Based on the Surrealist game in which words and images are collectively assembled to create blind collaborative drawings, participants will translate the words and ideas of their peers into 3-dimensional figures using clay. We will learn basic assemblage techniques and create an exquisite creature of our collective minds! Amphoras for Us with Cecile Chong July 22 – 26 Inspired by traditional and contemporary signs, symbols, logos, and historical figures across cultures, participants will design and paint their very own amphora (classical vase) out of plastic bottles. Build a Meal with Chakaia Booker July 29 – August 2 Using clay and discarded organic, manmade, and craft materials, participants will sculpt food items from each of the food groups to build a balanced meal. Each group can make a favorite dish, snack, or come up with their own food creation. Bon appétit! Watercolor for a Brighter Future with Lillian Gerson August 5 – 9 What do you think the world will look like in 100 years? Lets paint it! First we’ll watercolor the world as we see it today. Then we will imagine what the future will look like, while discussing subjects like climate change, rising seas, and increased pollution. We’ll paint our ideas of what nature and human civilization will look like in years ahead, and overlay our future and present day images to create our very own multi-layered, time travel picture.

Printing in the Park with Rob Swainston August 12 – 16 Nature printing is a time-honored printmaking technique in which natural objects are used to print. After learning some simple printing techniques, participants will go on a short scavenger hunt in the Park to find something to use from nature. Did you know leaves can be inked and printed like a relief, wiped and printed like an etching, or used as positive/negative stencils for hand printing?! Coat of Arms with Kimberly Kay August 19 – 23 Young student, fly your flag higher! While examining symbolism, participants will develop their own personal Coat of Arms. We will start with drawings that we transfer to fabric flags. Whether their crest be flanked with bears, lions, stars, or dolphins, participants will work with a variety of textile applications and skills to turn these designs into expressive flags to be flown high. Totem Poles with Paul Duncan August 26 – 30 The word totem is derived from the Native American Ojibwe word odoodem, meaning “his kinship group.” Each participant will generate a symbol that has personal power and meaning, then as a group add them together to form a powerful totem. Using a variety assemblage techniques and materials, participants will collaboratively construct a group totem pole reflecting their ‘Kinship Group.’
Coastal Classroom
In partnership with City Parks Foundation (CPF) Tuesdays – Fridays, and some Saturdays/Sundays April – August (weather permitting) Socrates hosts this experiential education program at Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove. CPF’s Coastal Classroom works with schools and community groups and is designed to cultivate knowledge, awareness, and stewardship of the East River and the tidal waters that surround New York City. Socrates Sculpture Park is the only site in the New York Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations in a unique outdoor environment that encourages strong interaction between artists, artworks and the public.
