Hope and Love is something we are called to share Did you know? The passion flower has a resemblance to the instruments of the Passion: The leaf – the spear The five antlers – the five wounds The tendrils – the cords of whips The column of the ovary – the pillar of the Cross or the cup The stamens – the hammers The stigma the sponge steeped in vinegar The three styles – the three nails The corona within the flower – the crown of thorns The flower keeps open for three days – Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. As we’re still in Easter time I thought you might enjoy reading one of these ‘Do you know’ oddities that people seem to enjoy pointing out (I must admit I enjoy them too!) The Passion Flower was given its name by the Jesuits apparently. I hope, like me, these odd comparisons strike a chord in you and prompt you to recall that there are so many things in our world that remind us of our Trinitarian God. Maybe the pleasure of these kinds of trivia are that they take us back into the sacrifice of Jesus and the joy of Easter Sunday, which is every Sunday by the by. Goodness knows, in the present economic climate when so many people are vulnerable to redundancy and poverty, we need these times of recalling and reliving the Christian Gospel. The Easter message has resonated down the centuries and is no less needed today. It can bring a special meaning to all those who are feeling at their most vulnerable in these difficult times. The Christian message of Easter is greater than the chocolate giving, Easter eggs and cards, nice as they are. The message of Easter and indeed of every Sunday is with all that might assail us there is always hope. And hope is something we are called to share alongside love. We had our time of repentance and thoughtfulness during Lent, we’ve had the pleasure of Easter Sunday, we always look outward but now more than ever we take this message that is so essential to us, a message of love and hope, out into a needy world.

Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation Saturday 25th May at 7:30pm A concert by Yate Choral Society At St John’s Chipping Sodbury Exactly one week before the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation in 1953, the first half of the concert will focus on coronation anthems. Zadok the Priest by Handel was written for the coronation of George II and has been used in every coronation since then (as well as it opening being used in TV adverts). I was Glad by Parry is a dramatic piece written for Edward VII’s coronation and used at each subsequent coronation. Daughter of Ancient Kings by Elgar was written for Queen Alexandra and The Queen also by Elgar was written in 1911 for Queen Mary, wife of George V. Although written for earlier Queens the words are very suitable for our own Queen. The second half is devoted to The Saint Cecilia Mass which brought it’s French composer Charles Gounod the acclaim of Paris at its debut, and has captured the imagination of the choir with its, by turns, beautiful and exciting passages. UP You lovers of the English language might enjoy this. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.' It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special. A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a shop in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost a quarter of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so........it is time to shut UP! Now it's UP to you what you do with this. 7

Women Bishops A lively and engaged group of laity and clergy gathered in Cirencester in March for the first of five meetings to discuss the November defeat of the Women Bishops Measure in General Synod and also the actual workings of all levels of Synods. People shared what they felt when they heard the result of the vote and brought up the various questions it raised for them. For some it was a shock, while others were not surprised, but were deeply disappointed nonetheless. Many wondered how it could have happened, given the high level of diocesan approval, and also wanted to know what they could do to become involved and what was happening currently to move the matter forward. It was news to some that the “electors” for both Diocesan and General Synods are the members of Deanery Synods, so standing for that office is the first step to having a real voice at all levels of governance.
From the Dean of Women Clergy, Canon Robbin Clark
Gospel music for congregations Penny Lyon and Kevin Washburn have been leading the Gloucestershire based Beacon Gospel Choir since 2004. They are now looking to bring the uplifting sounds of Gospel music to congregations across the region. If you would be interested in having ‘Out Of The Ashes’ come to play a part in your service, run workshops etc, then they would love to hear from you info@yourchurchevent.com for further details.
Informational papers were distributed and may be accessed on the diocesan website, including a comprehensive and optimistic report from the General Synod Working Party, which met in February with fifteen consultants, and plans to report to the House of Bishops in May. The bishops will then determine what to bring to the July meeting of General Synod.

centred on Jesus Christ - That’s why we start with prayer. The church praying together and gathering together to pray is something that draws other people to faith. The pilgrimage ended with choral evensong in Chichester Cathedral.
Archbishop’s pilgrimage
Archbishop Justin Welby went on a five day pilgrimage before his enthronement on Thursday 21 March. He began in Norwich and went on to Coventry, London, Southwark, Truro and Chichester. Prayers were a major feature of each visit. The Archbishop said “I think the key thing is to remember to be

Vicar included her in a topic on prayer by saying that Greta always knelt for prayer before she started cleaning.”
The Late Greta Evans R.I.P. Greta died on 1 March and her funeral took place at Westerleigh Crematorium on Thursday 14 March when we gave thanks to God for her life and commended her to her loving heavenly Father. Greta was well-known around St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury because she cleaned the church for many, many years and acted as a verger for weddings and funerals for a long time as well. Sadly, she had to go into Stanshawes Nursing Home in 2005, so I never met her. But, various people gave me memories of her, which I’d like to share with you. · “The church was always spotless and Greta spent most Wednesdays, Thursday, Fridays and Saturday mornings cleaning, sweeping and polishing. She would never make life easy for herself by using a mop, preferring to get on her knees to wash the floor.” ·
· ·
·
“She was quite a small lady, but the energy and speed she put into sweeping the church path and the pavement directly outside the church had to be seen to be believed. It was a case of ‘Look out!’ Greta’s commitment and dedication were immense as she clearly spent many more hours at the church than she was paid for.”
·
“She always wished people to call her ‘Mrs Evans’. After someone became a churchwarden, she said to them, ‘You can call me Greta now’.”
May Greta rest in peace and rise in glory. JK
Benefice Retreat 2013
