Dear Friends, It always feels peculiar writing this letter in early November to talk about Christmas – even though the shops are reminding us how many days there are until 25 December! When I was 11 years old, I was introduced to Charles Dickens’ book, A Christmas Carol. It tells the story of Scrooge and his tormenting spirits. Ebenezer Scrooge is a mean and intimidating character, who lives to make money, has a “thing” about time and very little else. He certainly has no use for religion or sentimentality. The spirits who visit him disturb him greatly, pointing out all the things he has done wrong in his life. The last spirit takes him into the future, where he sees a man who has died in his sleep and a discussion going on as to whether this man should even have a funeral service because no one would come to it. This dead man was Scrooge. Scrooge wakes up from these visions of the spirits and understands that it’s now or never. Is it possible for him to mend his ways and alter his destiny? Scrooge realises that he’s been given a reprieve. He has another opportunity to be more human. Many of us will recognise Scrooge’s struggles. He lived in a prison of his own making, the doors sealed with a bitterness he wouldn’t let go. The good news is that we can learn from the past, changing now so that we can create a better future. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and loves us enough to help us to change. If you are still making a Christmas list, think of some of these timeless gifts that won’t cost you anything, except perhaps a little pride; mend a quarrel; release a grudge; apologise; forgive someone who has treated you wrongly; write an over-due thank you note; tell someone you love them; give something away. At Christmas, we remember God’s gift to us of Jesus. Jesus came to us as a human being to enable us to become the human beings that God created us to be. Focusing on Jesus rather than on ourselves will give us the sort of life that is worth living. Happy Christmas! With love and prayers, Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:jane@kenchington.plus.com

Prayer Help Needed
The Health Shop
The Street Pastors go out as a team of four to care for and chat to those leaving the pubs in the High Street in Chipping Sodbury from 11.00pm to 2.30am each Saturday. And yes, it would be good to have more trained people from the local churches to be joining them once a month, but this request is for more people to pray. Each Saturday 4 or 5 people have agreed to pray for the Pastors. It is fantastic when some turn up to pray at our Hall through until 2.30am. The team have mobiles and can phone through with a request, if a fight breaks out or there is a needy person in tears, for example. It is also great if some come to pray at the Hall from 10.30pm to 11.00pm. Are you ever on your way home from a meal out or cinema trip at that time? The front Hall door is open for that half hour. You’d be so welcome if you just popped in till they go out onto the street. Parking is generally easy and there are very few people about by the Clock. The other way to support is being at home and praying. All prayers are answered in some way. Please speak to one of the team, or call Jenny and Peter Llewellyn on 01454 318442. for more information. Thank You

A prayer bringing children in need to God – Mark 10:14 Gracious Lord with arms outstretched wide you said, ‘Let the little children come to me’. And they came. You took them up in your arms; laid your hands on them; and you blessed them. Gracious Lord with hearts heavy with their pain, we bring the little children to you again. And we pray that you make us your outstretched arms to the vulnerable; your hands to give to those who are disadvantaged; your blessing to each precious one – today and always. Amen. Hilary Hurley

Our New Archbishop of Canterbury
Richard Kenchington Domestic Structural Engineer
The Right Reverend J u s t i n Welby was educated at Eton and T r i n i t y College Cambridge, spent 11 years as an oil executive earning a six-figure salary back in 1987, but gave it up to train to be an Anglican priest. He took a degree in theology at Cranmer Hall in Durham, where he studied from 1989 to 1992. "I was unable to get away from a sense of God calling," he said in a recent interview. "I went kicking and screaming but I couldn't escape it." The life-changing decision followed a personal tragedy in 1983 with the death of his seven-month-old daughter, Johanna, in a car crash. "It was a very dark time for my wife Caroline and myself, but in a strange way it actually brought us closer to God," he said. Even while working as an oil company executive, Justin had become a lay leader at the charismatic evangelical Holy Trinity Brompton church in London. Later, after ordination, he became curate in the village of Chilvers Coton with Astley, near Nuneaton. In 2002, Justin Welby became canon at Coventry Cathedral, then In November 2011, he became Bishop of Durham, Bishop Welby will be enthroned as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral on 21 March, 2013.

Growing a Singing Church
Bishop John’s Christmas Letter When our children were very young and more recently with grandchildren the wrapping paper of Christmas presents sometimes appeared to be as exciting as whatever was wrapped up inside. One year the church used a slogan “Christmas unwrapped” to encourage people to engage with Christmas. In spite of hard financial times, for most Christmas will include good food, Christmas decorations, presents, time with family and friends. But there is more. However exciting outer wrapping may be, once we take time to unwrap the gift inside, the gift at the heart of Christmas, there is something to be even more excited about. Christmas is the great unwrapping of God himself. God chooses to come and live as one of us, a fully human life. We witness the vulnerability of a new born baby born in unhygienic surroundings. Early on there is an attempt on his life by a power-crazy local ruler. Jesus and his parents become a refugee family in Egypt. Jesus is God’s love-gift to the world. He entered a world with plenty of confusion, insecurity, pain, suffering and violence. He was known as the Prince of Peace. During his three years of ministry he constantly released God’s love and healing power into broken, bruised and damaged lives. The world hasn’t changed much. Jesus is still God’s love-gift to a needy world, God’s love-gift to individuals who long for security, a deeper meaning and purpose in life. We mustn’t mistake the wrapping for the gift. The gift needs to be unwrapped. I hope you may take time this Christmas to visit a church near you, to enjoy the carols, hear afresh the Christmas message, put yourself in the way of God’s love unwrapped in the birth, life, death on a cross and resurrection of Jesus – there is no greater gift. A very happy Christmas to you all. The Bishop of Tewkesbury, Rt Revd John Went
The aim of the day was to help all church members participate more fully in the singing which enlivens our worship and binds our community together. We began with tea, coffee and biscuits to refresh the body, then a morning prayer service to refresh the spirit. The day was led by Ian Yemm who explained how we should breathe and why breathing is the most important lesson of the day. After many different exercises we all began to lose our tenseness. We started with a psalm and continued learning works which we could sing both together and in a round. We dined in the church centre on four varieties of soup and a mind boggling selection of puddings provided by Dorothy Downing and Christine Stephens. In the afternoon we sang both in a circle in the lady chapel and in the pews, it was obvious how much better the sound was when we sat in circle and could hear one another’s voices rather than in the pews when only one or two other voices could be heard. The poor acoustics in the different parts of the church were also ably demonstrated by Graham Newman who played both organ and Clavinova for the day. The day was rounded off by a short evening prayer service where we sang some of the music which we had learned during the day. Many thanks to Ian and Graham and the thirty odd choristers who attended what turned out to be a Fantastic Day. Watch out for the next group singing day! Bob and Sue Alcock

I think our first year can be summed up as a full measure of blessings, tears and laughter in equal parts. The blessings are almost too numerous to mention. In previous updates I have reported the significant items which have been financial, food, volunteer time and facilities gifts. These have brought us to the end of our first year without debt, a distribution operation at The Candle, a storage area, more than 5 tonnes of food in stock and a volunteer pool of more than 60 people. We have been astounded by the generosity of local people and organisations in all of these provisions. For example, there have been 27 local harvest festivals which have provided almost 2 tonnes of food. (I must admit that 50 kgs was out of date and the record was set by a box of tea which went out of date in October 1991 – Happy 21st Birthday!!!) As you are aware, the food parcels we give are only part of the service. This is where the measure of tears I mentioned in the opening lines comes in. While the parcels are prepared, we talk to the clients to try to understand the circumstances they face and guide them to help. There are many tears during these chats – both from the clients and from us. I close with a huge thank you to everyone who has helped to support the scheme throughout the last year and hope that you will continue to keep us in mind through the coming months Robert Vernon. 1 Corinthians 16:14 12

First lyfe forum held at Lee Abbey Several Bible Society staff members and more than 30 g u e s t s attended the f i r s t international lyfe forum at Lee Abbey in October. The forum, entitled A Residents' Guide to the Kingdom of God, looked at developing a deeper life with God, what we understand by 'the kingdom of God' and 15
how this might shape the way we engage with our contemporary culture. In the beautiful surroundings of Lee Abbey (with no mobile or wifi signal!), the forum provided plenty of opportunity for reflection, conversation and interaction, as well as times of teaching, prayer and worship. Speakers covered topics as diverse as “four great questions (asked by every worldview)”, “campaigning for the kingdom in culture” and “50 shades of grace” – with an emphasis throughout on how 21st century Britain and the kingdom of God might be connected. You can find out more about lyfe – a series of resources for connecting God and everyday life – at lyfe.org.uk
