Dear Friends, During this period after Easter, the Sunday readings trace the story of what happened to Jesus’ disciples after Jesus’ resurrection. At first, we find them bewildered: Jesus appears here, then disappears there, a sighting then, but a vanishing now; one minute you can touch Jesus; the next, he seems like an apparition. They don’t know what to do now. They try to return to their fishing jobs and fail. After that particular episode, we find the last words that Jesus says to Peter in St John’s Gospel is, “Follow me!” “Follow me!” That’s the gospel command in two words. Those two words lead to new life in Jesus. The disciples seek to do this, they receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and really are empowered to follow Jesus and invite thousands of people to follow Jesus and become Jesus’ disciples – and the early church came into being. With an Institutional Church as we have, it’s very easy for us to lose the fundamentals of what the Gospel (The Good News of God) is all about. We can think that church is represented by this model: Church = Building + Priest + Sunday Services If we think about fund-raising, it’s often all about keeping this model alive and we can very easily become curators of a historic building and not much else. If this model was offered to those early disciples, they would have been exceedingly puzzled. They saw the church as meaning this: Church = community + faith + action The church is essentially a community of people drawn together by faith in and encounter with Jesus Christ as Lord, which leads them into action in the whole of life, living a different set of values from what would otherwise be the case. This “living” will involve a wide range of “actions” including both attitudes (such as listening or generosity) and actions (service, confrontation or care). Sometimes the most important change a church can embrace is a change of attitude rather than any organisational change. As we approach the feast of Pentecost this month, which the Church often calls the birthday of the church, I invite you to think about what changes might be needed in your own church community to make the church more like the early church’s model. It is this model that will lead to more people being drawn into discipleship – to following Jesus. And it is the Holy Spirit, that God offers us, that will empower us to make the changes God desires. “Come, Holy Spirit, empower us and give us a right judgement in all things.” With my love and prayers,

Mothers’ Union On Monday 8th April David Hardwick gave us a very interesting and informative look into Local Mining. It is amazing to see how this was so influential around here, and many signs are still around today, such as old buildings and mounds of dust left after the coal had been removed.
Marriages: We send our congratulations to: Chantelle Clark & Ashley Matthews on 16 March at St John’s, Old Sodbury Kelly Hemmings & Luke Maby on 22 March at St John’s, Old Sodbury
Funerals:We extend our sympathy to the families There are still lovely walks and cycle paths where tracks for trains, which carried coal that came out and wood for pit-props that went in, used to be. How times have changed: children do not work from such a very young age down the mine and can go to school without financial ruin to their families.
and friends of:
Thomas Wigmore on 22 March at St John’s, Old Sodbury Maurice Holder on 28 March at Westerleigh Crematorium (Lois) Sheila Lewis on 28 March at St John’s, Chipping Sodbury
The Mothers’ Union Overseas support their communities by helping families to be more self reliant through farming projects that mean produce can be sold to bring in more supplies, and by helping to dig wells so that everyone benefits from clean water, meaning they don’t have to use water that comes from highly polluted rivers. The next meeting of the Mothers’ Union here is on Monday 13th May at 7:45pm in the Church Centre. It is about the work of the local Magistrates’ Court. We all see more cases referred to Yate on the television, but what happens after that?
IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU COULD TURN JUST A LITTLE BIT OF THAT WINE BACK TO WATER?
Bible Mnemonic?
On Saturday 25th May we are having our Annual Coffee morning. Plants, cakes, books, tea and coffee will be served in the Church from 10am so please come and support the work of the Mothers’ Union here in the Sodbury Vale Benefice.
A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "Okay, What does the Bible mean?" "That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly," It stands for Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.”
God Bless and thank you . Jenny 4

Cathedral chimes sound again The chimes of Gloucester Cathedral have started ringing again… after a gap of over twenty years. Money came flooding in from across the Diocese, after Canon Jonathan MacKechnie-Jarvis requested donations towards their restoration in lieu of a leaving present. Jonathan said: “I really wanted to hear those chimes again, so this is my leaving present to the Cathedral. I am so grateful to my colleagues and to my many friends in the parishes for their generosity”. He continued: “This is an amazing piece of our heritage. Two of the bells date from about 1400. The hour bell weighs three tons - the only medieval bell of that size to survive. And two of the chime tunes are ancient Plainsong melodies, more than a thousand years old. Put that together with solid-state circuitry and surely this is something unique.” There is a different tune each day of the week. The chimes will ring at 8am, 1pm and 5pm (4pm on Saturdays and Sundays) and are heard about a minute after the hour bell.

Little Sodbury
It is with much regret that the trustees of Glenfall House have taken the difficult decision to close Glenfall House. It has been the retreat centre in the Diocese of Gloucester since 1992 and is much loved by many people in the diocese and beyond, making the decision to close Glenfall all the more difficult.
All meetings start at 7:00pm Wed. 3 July at Janet’s; Wed. 9 October at Jan’s; Thurs. 9 January at Brenda’s; Tues. 4 March at Terry’s APCM Sun. 6 April 2014 at 7:00pm in the church.
The reason for closure is financial. Glenfall Trust cannot afford to trade solvently until the end of the year. Due to major works required on the House and to protect the interests of staff and users of the house, they have agreed to close the House on 31 July.
All meetings start at 7:00pm in Kirrin House, Horton Wed. 5 June; Tues. 10 September; Tues. 12 November; Tues. 14 January; Tues. 11 March APCM Tues. 1 April 2014 at Kirrin House at 7:00pm

Glenfall House will honour all bookings made until 31 July and any future bookings already made after this date will be refunded in full. The future of Glenfall is yet to be decided, but its ownership will revert back to the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF).
Annual Visitation Service The Archdeacon’s annual service to induct church wardens and PCC members will be at St John’s, Chipping Sodbury on 22 May at 7:30pm 8
Great buildings, great news In recent days, in the course of my duties, I have had the privilege of visiting Westminster Abbey (for a conference), Westminster Cathedral (for Vespers with Archbishop Vincent) and Canterbury Cathedral (for the enthronement of the Archbishop of Canterbury) and of course our own Gloucester Cathedral (for everything). I can assure you, only one is a regular haunt! One cannot fail to be amazed by these great buildings and the faith that sustains them. Travelling home to the diocese each time, there is an increasing sense of value and faithfulness represented in our great buildings, at Fairford, Tewkesbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham Minster, in the lovely churches of the North Cotswolds and many, many more.
Harp Concert
Greatness is best measured in the faithful witness down the ages by real people in real places. It is measured in people saying their prayers, serving the communities in which we are set and proclaiming the Easter great news afresh. The faithful witness of the churchwarden opening their church day by day or the priest saying morning prayer alone for the people in their care is beyond value. Great places are built upon the foundations of a great faith proclaimed by great people.
Robin will be presenting a programme that is an exploration of music, played on his own handcrafted triple harp. Audiences thoroughly enjoy the wide selection of Robin's programmes, as well as his performance style, that brings each piece to life. The programme includes music from Folk Traditions, the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, with a combination of his own transcriptions and music originally written for the instrument. Originally from New Zealand, over his performing career Robin has played with various orchestras and ensembles, and is now establishing himself as a solo artist. In February 2009 Robin independently released his first solo CD, No Pedals Attached, and he is working on his second. If you wish to learn more about Robin please visit www.robin-ward.com.
When the Easter faith is proclaimed by the Easter people every place is a cathedral of the soul and is a part of the great news (it's better news than 'good') that Jesus is risen and Alleluia is our song. The Dean of Gloucester, The Very Revd Stephen Lake

Christian Aid Week 12 - 18 May Christian Aid's vision is to bring an end to poverty around the world, by tackling its root causes as well as its effects. Today one in eight people are desperate for food. Between us we could feed them all. Last year Christian Aid Week raised 12 .5 million pounds. Three quarters of the money raised came from house to house collections. If you could help collect in your area, please contact Rosemary Thomas on 01454 314286
Bishop John said: “Rosemary and I were overwhelmed with so many coming to join us in the Cathedral for our final service; it was such a privilege to share with you all in a final act of worship involving different individuals and groups of people and a variety of worship. Thank you too for a very generous farewell gift for which we are extremely grateful. We will use some of your generous gift to purchase a piano which will remind us every time we or others play it of 17 very wonderful years in Gloucester Diocese. It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this diocese and to share in worship, fellowship, ministry and mission with so many of you. We take away with us many precious memories and will continue to hold you in our prayers and we hope you will continue to hold us in your prayers.”
Pope Francis: Act, Think and Love like Christ In St Peter's Square on Wednesday, Pope Francis told the 30,000 strong audience, 'A Christian isn’t a person who simply follows some commandments, but is a person who tries to act, think and love like Christ.'

Chipping Sodbury Festival 7th to the 16th of June. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Festival The programme is, once again, very varied, and there are a number of events in the Church.
To the uninitiated, it looks as though the parishioners of St John’s Church, Mickleover, Derbyshire, are being rather rude. But their tablet computers aren’t for sneakily checking their emails. Instead, they’re a very modern way for them to read hymns and prayers. The idea came about after some parishioners said they were struggling to follow the tiny print in the church’s pocket-sized hymn books because of their deteriorating eyesight. The tablets, with their bright displays and ability to enlarge the text, make it much easier to follow the service. They access the hymns and prayers through a wi-fi network installed in the church cafe next door. It felt like you were holding a hymn book or prayer book, but you didn’t have to rummage around to find the right page. ‘It created a really nice atmosphere for the whole service and was really good fun.’ Parishioners said they were delighted with the mini computers. ‘We are pleased with the progress so far and look forward to see how we can develop things further.’ The church is working with networking company The Cloud, which agreed to donate the tablets to members of the community.
The Festival Service at 9.30 on Sunday 9th June is followed by a reception with refreshments, in the Town Hall, and then there is a concert that evening, back in the Church, of mixed light music, also with refreshments. During the week there are two further concerts in the Church, Chipping Sodbury School on Tuesday and a Harp Recital on the Friday, organised by the Church. Tickets for the former are distributed by the School, and for the latter by the Church. The Combined Schools’ Art Exhibition is mounted in the Church throughout the week and we will welcome all the help that parishioners can give to steward the Church through the days to welcome visitors. There is, as usual a rota in the church for volunteers to choose their sessions. Many other interesting and enjoyable events are arranged during the week and full details are available on www.chippingsodburyfestival.co.uk and in programmes and posters distributed through the Town. Tickets are available from Farrago and Out of the Blue. 11

Garden Open Days (see above) Graham and Margaret Newman are opening their garden in aid of the YateGenieri Link again this year and are hoping for good weather and large numbers as this is the Link's main annual fund-raiser. Last year over £1,000 was achieved. Musicians will sing and play during the two afternoons. Among the performers will be the combined Community choirs of Yate and Sodbury and, if last year's turnout is anything to go by, about 50 singers will come. This year there will be additional offroad parking at Henfield Village Hall. The charity has set up projects such as a Day Care Centre for younger children to begin their education early and to enable their mothers to help cultivate crops. More recently it has started a
micro-loan scheme whereby prospective business women are loaned small lump sums to help them realise their dreams. So, among twelve chosen enterprises, one will be bulk buying cooking oil for resale, another opening a small café at the village's market stall and one making and selling bed sheets. 12

F April Fool’s Day in Gloucester Cathedral
An Easter Monday Pilgrimage to Gloucester Cathedral, the first ever (well, in our time!) and hopefully won’t be the last. During the afternoon people and dogs gathered in the nave to find no chairs and a number of blankets strewn over the floor. A figure appeared who would meander around, interacting with Cathedral staff, and the children as they arrived. It was Roly Bain the Reverend Clown. It was wonderful to watch him gently play jokes, he dusted with his feather duster, slid down the rail of the pulpit and followed the verger about his duties, only to blow the candles out after they were lit. Then came the start of the service proper, Bishop Michael and the Dean of
the Cathedral processing in, escorted by Roly and his feather duster. After a number of joyful songs of praise and worship, Roly embarked on the assembly of the slack rope, and whilst ‘fooling’ around encouraged us all to keep our eyes focused on the cross if we want to reach our destination. Faith is risky and we must learn to trust in God, the cross is there for us to cling to when times are hard. Roly left us with this thought “The foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom” Gathering around the nave altar for Communion brought a closeness to Jesus and what He had done for us 3 days ago. We all left with a sense of purpose and felt it was a very special event that rounded off Holy Week; returning to work on the Tuesday wasn’t as painful as usual. 16
