During the 19th and 20th centuries children would go “souling” in a similar fashion to carol singing, in which they would ask for alms or soul cakes. A soul cake is like a hot cross bun, but without the currants or the cross on top. We will be holding our annual service of remembrance of our loved ones and friends who have died in recent years. Do invite people you know who might appreciate such a time of reflection and accompany them.
Baptisms: We welcomed into the Church: Olivia Rose Searle on 14 September at St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury Isabella Louise Harris on 21 September at St James’ Church, Horton James Beckett Cheverton on 21 September at St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury Phoebe Elizabeth Thompson on 12 October at St John’s Church, Old Sodbury Henry Ernest Seward on 12 October at St John’s Church, Old Sodbury
Baptism Fun Afternoon The Baptism Fun afternoon (held on 20 Sepember) was a huge, huge success I asked one of the ‘grans’ to write something down for me as I thought it was really precious. Here’s what she said: ‘Talking to my little granddaughter about the Baptism Fun Day, I told her there would be lots of children there who, like her, had been baptised at St John’s Chipping Sodbury. She said she was going to invite Jesus to come to the party. When I asked how she would send the invite she replied that she was writing a letter to Jesus in her mind. I told her that was called praying. A few minutes later she told me she had a reply! ‘Jesus has another party to go to but he will try really hard to come to ours as well’ Just before we were leaving the Church at the end of the afternoon I asked her if she thought Jesus had been at our party. She replied ‘Oh yes Nanna, he was with me in my head the whole time.’

All Souls’ Service 2 November at 4pm in St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury Dealing with grief and bereavement can be difficult and we want to make sure we never forget those who were dear to us after their deaths. All Souls Day, which falls on November 2, is the time in the Church when we have an opportunity to remember family and friends who are no longer with us.
Our next meeting is Monday 10th December at 2:00pm in the Church Centre. The topic is Street Pastors 3
Dear Friends Each year, on the 11th Day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth stop and keep two minutes silence to remember the members of their armed forces who died in the line of duty during World War I. We commemorate the Armistice agreement signed on that day. The Red Poppy written about in the poem, In Flanders Fields, has become the symbol of Remembrance and the Royal British Legion keeps the event alive as its official custodian. This year marks the Centenary, 100 years, since the beginning of World War I, and so the Remembrance events that will take place across the country on the 11th November, and on the Sunday before across the Christian churches, will have a particularly important focus. During Remembrance, we also recall those who have fallen in other conflicts and indeed those actively engaged in our armed forces today. We don’t have to look too hard to find evidence that some human beings continue to be drawn into dictatorship, violence and retribution. The need for peace keeping, defence and military action continues, one hundred years on. One could be forgiven for asking the question, ‘Have we learned anything?’ One of the challenging features of current conflicts in the public consciousness is the connection made between war and religion. People claiming devout religious faith are both the perpetrators and also the victims. In our secularised context, many onlookers become increasingly out of reach to the idea that religious faith can be ‘Good News’. It is tragic that in the UK, Jewish people experience increased anti-Semitism because of what is happening between Israel and Palestine and Muslims suffer increased Islamaphobia because of what is happening in the Middle East. Overseas, Christians too are suffering persecution on an unprecedented scale. Sunday 16th November to Saturday 22nd November is Inter Faith Week. Maybe you have never heard of it? It couldn’t be more important, that people of faith, are able to stand together in the face of corrupted ideologies that erode the message of the Golden Rule we share. As Jesus expressed it: “Do to others what you want them to do to you. This is the meaning of the law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12). This November, let us pray earnestly for world peace and for all those caught up in battle, displacement and prejudice.

Horse first, cart follows
F. WOODRUFF
Many people suffer from low esteem, they look at a seemingly capable one and wonder how they managed to be full of confidence and able to achieve so much. I read this article by Richard Rohr and it spoke to me. Hope it does to you too. One of Jesus’ most revealing one-liners is, “Rejoice only that your name is written in heaven!” (Luke 10:20). If we could fully trust this, it would change our whole life agenda. This discovery will not create overstated or presumptuous individualists, as is usually feared but instead makes all posturing and pretending largely unnecessary. Our core anxiety that we are not good enough is resolved from the beginning, and we can stop all our climbing, contending, criticising, and competing. All “accessorising” of any fragile self, will show itself to be a massive waste of time and energy. Costume jewellery is just that, a small part of an already unnecessary costume. Most of Christian history has largely put the cart of requirements before the “horsepower” itself, thinking that loads of carts, or the best cart, will eventually produce the horse. It never does. The horsepower is precisely our experience of union with God. Find God, the main source for all, and the spring water will forever keep flowing (Ezekiel 47:1-12; John 7:38) naturally. Once you know that, the problem of inferiority, unworthiness, or low self-esteem is resolved from the beginning and at the core. You can then spend your time much more positively, marching in the “triumphal parade” (2 Corinthians 2:14), as Paul so playfully calls it. Adapted from Richard Rohr The world says ‘I love you IF…..’ God says ‘I love you EVEN if……’

Letter from Bishop Martyn
Chipping Sodbury Chaplaincy- Steering Group There is a proposal to start an ecumenical chaplaincy for business in Chipping Sodbury High Street and adjacent roads. This would be similar to the Yate Shopping Centre chaplaincy, but would involve agreements with more businesses for visits and casual encounters. The High Street would be split up into parts with a dedicated volunteer chaplain. In order to get this off the ground Peter Fewings is working with Janet Bearne in the Baptist Church. We need a strategic person to sit on a steering group who can help us with the planning, marketing and structuring of this to get it off the ground by the middle of next year or possibly Easter. 6
I am very pleased to be able to write with the news that we were notified yesterday by Church House, Westminster that the Metropolitan Police, following their enquiries, are to take no further action against Bishop Michael. He has himself issued a statement saying: ‘It was right that the allegations should be fully investigated and I am gratified that the police have completed the investigation and concluded that there are no grounds for further action to be taken. My family and I are profoundly grateful for all the support and affirmation we have received through this very difficult time.’ As in any case of this nature, national church safeguarding processes must continue to be followed. We do not know yet how long this will take and we await the outcome of that process and continue to pray for Bishop Michael, his family and all those affected by these events. Thank you for your ongoing support and prayers. Yours in the service of Christ, The Rt Revd Martyn Snow, Bishop of Tewkesbury
Leaving our comfort zones
BENEFICE RETREAT
We all have comfort zones – those places where we can relax with a high degree of satisfaction. And in today’s world we surely need them… So what would induce us to step outside…? Whether we find it easy to love other people or not, it was a command that Jesus gave - to leave our comfort zones and go out to make disciples of all nations. The call here is for commitment. The word 'mission' implies going out, being sent, leaving our comfort zone behind - just for the sake of other people. These are people deserving of God's love and blessing; deserving too of our love and compassion. With so many people starved of love and attention today the imperative of the Gospel seems even more urgent. 'Going' can be just out on the streets of Chipping Sodbury on a Saturday night as a Street Pastor. Or it may mean uprooting with family to go to foreign parts, as did Jon and Jo Parsons to work in Kibera 10 years ago. Such a move may feel far from comfortable at first, but grows on you as time goes by and as meaningful relations are established. It could also be fraught with risks: Alan Henning went out on a dangerous mission and it cost him his life. Or it could simply mean getting out of our armchair and visiting the neighbour across the street. A lot simpler in many respects – but maybe equally difficult. It all comes down, in the end, to doing what God calls us to do – however small or big. Obeying can bring great blessing. And if you want to pray for missions – something that can be equally important – there is the monthly Global Action Prayer meeting in the Church Centre… 8pm on every 3rd Monday Frank Gray

The Great Writer ? There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed a desire to become a "great" writer. When asked to define "great," he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, wail, howl in pain, desperation, and anger!" He now works for Microsoft writing error messages
Thank you… to all of you who gave so generously to the harvest appeals. A lot of money was raised from Old Sodbury for Aid Ukraine and bags and bags of food were taken to the Yate Food Bank and the Sisters of the Church. A car full of fresh vegetables and tinned goods were taken to the Sisters of the Church from Little Sodbury.
Thank YOU all! 7
Heaven’s Grocery Store I was walking down life’s highway a long, long time ago. One day,I saw a sign that said “Heaven’s Grocery Store”, As I got a little closer, the door came open wide, And when I came to myself, I was standing inside. I saw a host of ANGELS. They were standing everywhere. One handed me a basket and said,”My child shop with care”. First I got some PATIENCE, LOVE was in the same row, Further down was UNDERSTANDING, you need that everywhere you go. I got a box or two of WISDOM, a bag or two of FAITH. I couldn’t miss the HOLY GHOST for he was all over the place. I stopped to get some STRENGTH and COURAGE to help me run this race. I didn’t forget SALVATION for SALVATION is free, So I tried to get enough of that to save both you and me. Then I set off to the till to pay my grocery bill, For I thought I had everything to do my Master’s will. As I went up the aisle I saw PRAYER and just had to put that in, PEACE and JOY were plentiful; they were on the last shelf. SONGS and PRAISES were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then I said to the Angel, “Now, how much do I owe?” He smiled and said “Just take them everywhere you go”, Again, I said “How much do I really owe? “he smiled again and said: “MY CHILD, JESUS PAID YOUR BILL A LONG, LONG TIME AGO,” 8
STAMP APPEAL
wearing one on their lapels as they turned their thoughts to those who had fought in the conflict. The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veterans today: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress. The Royal British Legion, which was awarded the Royal title in 1971, continues to work to improve their lives. Today, more than 45 million poppies are distributed each year with 95 percent of people taking part in Remembrance events. This year it has set a national fundraising target of £42 million towards helping men and women of the military. To find out more about the work of the Royal British Legion and how you can support it, visit www.britishlegion.org.uk/
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a disease of the eye that leads to loss of vision and blindness. The Charity RP Fighting Blindness works hard to stimulate and fund cutting edge research to find a treatment or cure and support those affected. RP affects some 25,000 people in the UK alone. We are currently running a used stamp appeal - we are asking if you could take a few moments each day to tear off the stamps from your letters and save them until you have a fair number (perhaps enough to fill a jiffy bag or similar) and post them into us; we can then sell them on to stamp dealers. There’s no need to steam or peel them, just tear the corner of the envelope off. Whether British or foreign, franked or not, we would really appreciate you sending them to us, as every little helps. When the fighting of the First World War finally ceased, many people wanted to find a way of honouring the thousands who had died – as well as providing for those soldiers who had been left injured from the conflict. Three years after the guns went silent, in 1921, the British Legion was formed. The organisation adopted the poppy as its symbol of hope and remembrance,

Its deepest power was simply in the reading of names. Names are so precious, the way in which we are known to each other as father, son, daughter, husband, partner, lover and of course they are the way in which we are known to God, whom the psalmist says formed each one of us in our mother’s womb, who calls us, who holds us as beloved. As the names of those killed in the Great War recede into the carved stone of our memorials it would be easy to forget. In this centenary year let us remember them, the humanity, the vulnerability, the uniqueness of each person, and those who loved and mourned them. In our world today where still innocent victims of every race and creed lose their lives in war and conflict, it is in this remembering that we discover anew our common humanity, our hope for peace and commit ourselves to a better future, for which they laid down their lives that we may have a new heart and a new spirit. Neil is the beneficiary of a bursary scheme partnership administered by the National Trust on behalf of the Heritage Lottery Fund. This has provided Neil the rare opportunity to work in a Cathedral Workshop for 18 months during which Neil will work towards his NVQ Level 3 Heritage Skills. We are very pleased to have welcomed Neil to our team and it is a pleasure to see him progress steadily in his craft. In the picture we can see Neil working on a piece of the Lady Chapel Quatrefoil roof vent which has, by the time you read this, been fixed in position to a very high standard of workmanship overall. Well done Neil!
Youth Mentoring in Yate and Chipping Sodbury Steve Clayson who worships at Christ the Rock and who is an Assistant Head at St Mary Redcliffe School in Bristol, has set up a Youth mentoring programme in Yate. This programme is designed to support the most vulnerable and isolated young people in our local community. Steve is looking to expand this programme and needs more mentors. This is a fantastic thing to be doing in our local community. If you are interested, do look at the website: http://xlm.org.uk and speak to Jane.

Announcing New Benefice web sites at svbcofe.org.uk

Good communication lies at the heart of any healthy community. It reflects the heartbeat of its members, it builds relationships – and it keeps people suitably informed. One vital area of communication these days is through the Internet and the various related technologies that now provide the primary channels through which many of us communicate. We still have the old channels too – like telephone, writing letters, newsletter, and even faceto-face…! And they are still very important and have their own place. In the Benefice things have been moving on and amidst all our busyness of activities, work, church and meetings there are some improvements now available that permit a lot of change for the better. We are trying to see how we can improve our use of these … One big issue that has been at the heart of these changes is the Benefice web-site. It has served its purpose over the past few years but now needs a makeover. And part of that makeover has been the registration of a new domain… svbcofe.org.uk The new Benefice web site is found at http://svbcofe.org.uk. There are also subdomains for each of the four churches. These are linked directly to the main site but can each have their own administration and be maintained separate from the main SVB site. With the new domain has come the opportunity for new e-mail accounts for benefice staff and others who may need them. Their old e-mail addresses will continue to function but from now on the main e-mail addresses will be as follows:

During these days of new technology and social networking an organisation’s web site is effectively its shop window on the world. People can look up the site and browse at their leisure to find out who we are, what we do, how we connect with the community, etc. It is also for new people moving into the area or visiting. The web site becomes our ‘Welcome Mat’. It also become part of our identity – who we are, and what we value. For that reason we need to publicise it, and include it in our publications, on our notice-boards, or when we engage with people in writing. Next time you are on your computer, iPad, or smartphone do take a look at the site – and bookmark it. It has taken many hours of work and there are still many gaps to be filled. In the meantime if you have any pictures you would like to share or items to be posted do contact me at admin@svbcofe.org.uk. Thank you for your patience. Your suggestions and criticisms will always be welcome as we strive to make it better for everyone – the communities we serve as well as ourselves. Remember:

Old Sodbury Church Harvest Supper Many thanks to all who attended the Harvest Supper, together we raised £643.50 for Aid Ukraine. We have received this letter of thanks from the speakers Tony and Winifred Fry:
Dear Friends at Old Sodbury Parish Church. We would like to express to you all our sincere thanks for the wonderful support you have given to Aid Ukraine by the way of Harvest proceeds. Thank you so much for considering our charity for the year. We can assure you this financial support will help many people in Ukraine who are in extreme poverty especially the elderly, widows and widowers. The financial support which we are enabled to send to Pastor Paul Nazaruk makes it possible for him to take Christmas gift boxes to children and food parcels for the poor, as well as the Christmas message by way of literature, books and Bibles which are printed in Lutsk by the Christian Missionary Press. All gratefully received by all those visited personally by Paul and Church workers. Our special thanks again for the lovely evening we had with you and the fellowship enjoyed by us both. God's richest blessing. Tony and Winifred Fry and the Trustees of Aid Ukraine
Bishop Michael’s farewell service not going ahead Bishop Martyn announced at the Diocesan Synod on 11 October that with the full agreement of Bishop Michael and Lambeth Palace the service scheduled for Saturday 8 November will not go ahead. Bishop Martyn said “I know this will be a huge disappointment to many of you, and it may be that some time in the not too distant future we may be able to hold a public service to mark the ending of Bishop Michael’s ministry here in Gloucester”
