The committed committee of “Friends of Old Sodbury” recently held a coffee morning at the home of Sarah Weaver. As well as coffee there were plants, home made cards, jams and preserves and jewellery. As a result over £300 was raised for the church.

Dear Friends, 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James' Version of the Bible. Some people say that at the time when it was produced, this was the most influential publishing event in the English-speaking world. The words on the title page of the King James' Bible run as follows: "THE HOLY BIBLE: Containing the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out of the original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. By His Majesty's special commandment. Appointed to be read in churches. Imprinted at London by Robert Barker. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty." The "former translations" are those of Tyndale and Coverdale, combined in the Matthew's Bible of 1537 and issued in 1539 as the Great Bible, the first to receive the royal imprimatur and to be placed in churches. A translation by Protestant exiles (the Geneva Bible) was the Puritans' favourite and the Bishops' Bible of 1568 was supervised by Archbishop Parker. King James' Bible was more than a light revision, however, and reigned supreme for nearly 300 years as the English Bible as the result of its scholarship. This translation had far-reaching effects on society in England. The Bible became so central to national life that one scholar has spoken of the English inhabiting a Biblical culture as a result. The advent of the KJV Bible helped to create the identity of the English language and inspired writers and musicians to embrace Biblical themes in their works; the Bible served as a critique of authorities; and it inspired hope and action in people, sometimes encouraging them to challenge the status quo in their Society. This month the Church remembers William Tyndale who was one of the Reformation martyrs, burned at the stake for having the courage to translate the Bible into English. His passion for making the Bible accessible to ordinary people puts us to shame when we so often take the Bible for granted and rarely allow it to really challenge our lives. William Tyndale spent some of his time as a Chaplain to the family at Little Sodbury Manor. To mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the KJV, Bishop Michael is coming to preach at St Adeline's, Little Sodbury on Sunday 16 October at 6pm. Yate and Chipping Sodbury Foodbank. "A helping hand, a listening ear and a caring heart." What is a Foodbank? A foodbank collects food and then distributes it to provide short term relief to people in crisis. Why? The main reasons for feeding people are: i. Benefit delay ii. Low income/debt iii. Redundancy iv. Chronic, sudden illness v. Bereavement How? 1. Collecting the food Food is donated by shoppers, supermarkets, churches and schools. The food is generally tinned or packet with a long shelf life. 2. Collating the food The food is sorted, date controlled, weighed and packed into food boxes, each of which contains sufficient food for three days for a family of four. 3. Identifying the clients Vouchers are issued by Social Services, Health centres, schools, other charitable operations (e.g CAP advisors, Citizens Advice Bureau, Surestart, etc.) and churches when they identify people in crisis. In some instances, people will be "signposted" to the foodbank (e.g. by Jobcentre Plus). In the main, the foodbank will rarely identify its own clients and will not be involved in assessing need.
The client leaves with three days worth of meals for their family. Food boxes can also be provided to other charities and agencies for their clients with immediate needs, dependent on donations. The Need Government Indices of deprivation show that there are more than 13 million people in the UK living on the edge of poverty. Despite much of Yate and Chipping Sodbury appearing to be reasonably affluent, some of those 13 million will be in our midst. There are 32,500 identified deprived areas nationally. 162 deprived areas are in South Gloucestershire and 19 of these are in Yate and Dodington. Consequently, Yate and Dodington is designated a Priority Neighbourhood." What Support is required? The plan would be to sign up to membership of the Trussell Trust Network of Foodbanks. The rationale is that the Trust has now "seeded" 100 foodbanks across the country and has produced professional marketing materials, operating manuals, outline business plans, guidelines for hygiene, safety and legal impacts and they will provide training for volunteers. Last year they fed over 60,000 people. The ability to "network" with others who have been through the process will be valuable - it is logical to avoid re-inventing the wheel. Gloucester has a foodbank under this umbrella and Easton will be starting theirs on June 7th.
Signing up for a three-year contract with the Trussell Trust will cost ÂŁ1500 and the Diocese of Gloucester's Director for 4. Chipping Sodbury PCC is currently in discussion about joining in this initiative. Personally, I believe we should be joining in. Food Banks are being set up in other parts of our diocese. This isn't some "Yate novelty venture." The vision has come from Christians who long for the church to serve the needy in their local community. It is all about responding to the imperative in scripture - Isaiah 58:10 & Matthew 25:35 and it's all about Preserving Self Esteem and Reviving Hope. Pastors party The newly formed Chipping Sodbury Street Pastors held a get together in the garden of one of their members as the forecasters promised barbeque weather. It was barbeque weather - as soon as it was lit it started to rain! which is about normal for a summer gathering.

Bishop Michael's Letter Broken Society, Broken Christ In October we have the party conferences and then the return of parliament. No doubt in both there will be analysis of the August riots on our city streets. Reflecting on what happened and on things that were said in the immediate aftermath are important if we are genuinely to learn and to address the issues. There are some mistakes that are easily identified, things said or policies adopted in the heat of the moment that, in retrospect, we ought to regret. Can it really make any sense to evict from their homes people whose children were involved in rioting, adding to the homeless population and putting some vulnerable people on the streets? Is there a real case for putting in prison a mother of young children whose sole crime is to receive stolen goods? Although a short sharp experience of prison might well teach some foolish young people a lesson, will sentences of several years in prison really improve them or society? Christianity with its concern for justice and for the poor has things to say when we are exploring such questions. More fundamentally we need to explore the statement that our society is broken, or even sick. Again Christian faith has something to say. It talks about brokenness, looks to the brokenness of Jesus on the cross and invites us to share broken bread, a sign of the fragility of our lives. Clearly our society is, at a certain level, a fractured one, but the response to the riots also showed a society in which there is solidarity with neighbours, compassion for the 12suffering, and respect for one another.
That impressive gathering of thousands to honour the three men who died in Birmingham defending their community showed that. The truth is that human nature, the human nature of each one of us, is a mixture of good and evil. We are fallen humanity, capable of heroism and of love, but spoiling it often by selfishness and sin - and that is a kind of sickness. But that is not just about some disenchanted "underclass". It is part of each one of us. It is why we need a Saviour and have one in Jesus, who was broken that we might be put together again. From the Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt. Revd. The hassocks at St Adeline's, Little Sodbury, have been looking the worse for wear for some time. Nancy Nagle solved the problem by organising sponsorship for new Kneelers. She has persuaded most of the congregation to sponsor one or more hassocks. The sponsor chooses the design, and if they wished can do the needlework themselves, as some have, but for others volunteers were found to do the work. The hassocks were then expertly put together by Alison Barton to produce the finished article. On the evening of Wednesday 17th August the church held a viewing at St Adeline's to show off the new hassocks and thank all the sponsors. The hassocks were laid out in front of the altar, acknowledging the sponsors and making a very colourful display. Light refreshments and wine were served and about 40 people attended, viewing the new kneelers and having a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thanks to Nancy, Alison and all the needle workers (not all ladies).
