Dear Friends, By the time you read this we’ll be in the middle of our Harvest Festivals and Harvest Suppers. After a wash-out of a summer, autumns in England can often be like Indian summers and the blackberries and the rose hips gleam in the hedgerows. Harvest celebrations always remind us of the plentiful supply of food we have in this country and prompts us to be generous towards those in need. I read that even though many people starve in the world, there is more than enough food in the whole world to feed the whole world…and things have gone terribly wrong. Whilst people in the west have image problems and starve themselves or constantly diet to lose weight, millions in the Global south hunger. Harvest also reminds us of God’s great generosity to us. We so often take what we have for granted when all that we have are sheer gifts from God. God’s giving is super abundant. Stories of the feeding of the five thousand and when Jesus turned water into wine at Cana illustrate this point. After the feeding of the five thousand, there was food left over. The quantity of wine that had been made in what was said to have been Jesus’ first miracle was a crazy amount. It would have been impossible for the people to have drunk it all at that wedding celebration! But stories such as those are meant to give us a glimpse of how generous God is towards us. And what are we like in return? At the moment, the lectionary readings for Morning Prayer are taken from the Acts of the Apostles. In reading from this book in the Bible, I am reminded yet again about how the early Christians lived. We’re told that they shared everything they had with one another and with those in need. We’re told that they organised collections of money to send to other Christian communities who were in need. Their default setting seemed to be that of giving away themselves to one another and giving away what they had to one another. And in a funny way (and it happens so often) in living that generous attitude, they were enriched themselves. It didn’t make them poorer and it made them happier. So this autumn, despite the economic hardships we face, let’s open up our hearts to receive from God thankfully and give to others joyfully. It’s the only way to live. With love and prayers,

Hi tech tributes on gravestones
Steve Blakeney Plumbing and Heating
A funeral director has come up with a hi tech way of letting people find out more about who is buried at a grave, by using a mobile phone. A QR code, a square barcode, is etched onto gravestones, memorials or plaques on benches. All grave visitors have to do is scan the stone with their mobile to see a biography, pictures, tributes and videos of the dead person Funeral director Stephen Nimmo said: “It’s a positive way to remember someone. “People often look at gravestones and wonder who a person was. " By using the codes they can find out all they need to know.” The square Quick Response codes cost up to £300 with a £95 charge for the web page.

Gloucester Cathedral tops Which? Travel survey
THE HEALTH SHOP
Gloucester Cathedral is in the top five UK historic attractions, according to a survey published in the September issue of Which? Travel. Which? members were asked for their views on their favourite historical attractions and each property was rated on various elements such as value for money and quality of information. Gloucester Cathedral ranked in joint second place alongside the Houses of Parliament with a mark of 84% in the survey, while Stirling Castle topped the polls at 87%. The Which? article commented: ‘Other cathedrals including St David’s, Salisbury and Canterbury, scored well in our survey, but Gloucester received particular praise: “A most magnificent cathedral – wonderful stained glass windows and a superb pipe-organ” said one respondent.’

InterCare - Medical aid for Africa Last year when my Dad passed away I found he had many unused medicines. I looked into the possible recycling of these and learnt about InterCare. Collection is normally done by GP surgeries, but none in this area were participating in the scheme. So I went to the charity myself via the Internet and got a list of the medicines they were after I subsequently was able to send them a box of medicines which they acknowledged as being extremely helpful If any of you have unused medicines, you would like to see recycled then look at their web site - www.intercare.org.uk or ring 0116 2695925 For a little cost, for the postage, you may be helping to save a life. Benefice Retreat Saturday 8th September saw St John’s Church turned into a spectrum of colour, cakes, flowers, vegetables, fruit and photographs. The annual Summer Show was full of Jubilee and Olympic themed entries, and the stalls reflected the same theme. We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather which brought a steady stream of visitors to the church and for the more energetic a climb up the tower. A very enjoyable day, and as we packed up and went home, our thoughts turned to the Summer Show for 2013; Watch out for a few surprises.!

Bishop Michael launches a new book In September Bishop Michael launched his latest book, Jesus and Peter: Growing in Friendship with God. The book looks at the relationship between Jesus and Simon Peter, as the gospels tell it and also how that relationship develops after the ascension and as Peter takes the leadership in the young church. He also looks at how Peter moves from follower to committed disciple and then into a relationship that feels more like friendship. The book has been written for anybody wanting to get a little deeper into faith or discipleship, including those right at the beginning of that journey, dipping a toe into the pool of discipleship. The book is published by SPCK, price £9.99. ISBN 978028106754. It can be found on the SPCK website and in a number of bookshops, including the Gloucester Cathedral shop. www.spck.org.uk From “Our Diocese” (www.gloucester.anglican.org),

Faith at Work Speaking at the end of the Paralympic Games, Lord Coe celebrated both them and the Olympics as a festival of sport that had been 'Made in Britain'. The Olympics' opening ceremony had a similar theme with its evocation of idealised rural life giving way to the Industrial Revolution when Britain became known as the 'workshop of the world'. As a church, we have sometimes been hesitant in celebrating the world of work. The recent Harvest Festivals can helpfully point us to the importance of the agricultural economy and environmental issues (though we must be careful that they avoid a romantic ideal of farming). Some parishes make a special point of engaging with the farming community around this time of year, seeking to pray for and serve them more effectively. But what of other spheres of work? While churches are often comfortable praying for caring professions (teachers, doctors, nurses and so on), how often do we pray for and engage with those in other sectors such as business, finance, or service industries, as well as the unemployed? Jesus calls us to follow him in all aspects of our lives. For many of us it is in the workplace that most of our time is spent. Jesus recognised this in his teaching in which he drew on scenes from everyday life - labourers waiting to be hired, an unjust steward, wise and foolish builders, a shepherd looking after his flock. He used these everyday scenes to give us glimpses of God's Kingdom. Much of his own life was spent as a carpenter in
the family business. So as a church we are challenged to make connections between faith and work, and to enable each other to live out our discipleship in the world. In the latest issue of Inspires, the diocesan magazine, you'll find an article that explores these issues further. Do take a look. May we encourage each other in making stronger links between our faith and daily life. Visit the website— www.gloucester.anglican. org or pick up a hard copy of “Inspires” in your church. Revd Canon Andrew Braddock, Diocesan Missioner From “Our Diocese” (www.gloucester.anglican.org),
THE COCKEREL CROWS AGAIN at St.John's, Old Sodbury. The old much battered cockerel which has not been seen from our church tower for many a year, has, thanks to the efforts of our keen volunteers, now been re-furbished & re-erected and is to be seen from some miles away in all its glory, catching the sun with its new gold paint. A special thanks should be given to Julian & Wills Shipp who very kindly provided a magnificent purpose built support structure all carefully installed so as not to damage the stonework on the tower, and upon the top of which the cockerel proudly sits. We now have Flags flying & Cockerel's crowing. The Shipp family will also be providing a suitable plaque to commemorate the occasion.

Val and Stuart’s Leaving Service
good “boss” and everyone for their support of her ministry.
At the end of August we had a Benefice service to say goodbye to Val and Stuart. The services was well attended with each of the four churches well represented Val described the stages of her life using a picture, with clowns in, that she had painted. She gifted it to the church, much to Stuart’s delight, and it now has pride of place near the Lady Chapel.
At the end of the service Jane made an emotional presentation of a gift of a cheque to Val from all the congregations of the benefice in thanks for the time she spent with us. Val thanked Jane for being such a
The bring and share lunch afterwards was held in the church due to adverse ground conditions at the rectory. There was a plentiful and varied spread and everyone had a great time eating and chatting.
