Soeun Park Design Portfolio Fall 2023

Hi, my name is Soeun Park and I am a fourth year architecture student seeking a four to eight month internship from January to April, or August 2024. I am interested in the narratives of a space and how design can communicate information, stories, ideas and emotions. I want to create meaningful architecture that is both beautiful and functional. As well, in a rapidly developing, ever-changing era, I am interested in flexible, adaptable and sustainable practices - exploring passive design strategies, energy conservation and green technologies. I am excited for the opportunity to expand my learning and experience in architecture and its various interdisciplinaries, while contributing to the sucess of your firm. The following is a collection of selected work that represents my interests, skills and creativity - I hope you enjoy!

Employment Reference for Soeun Park

To Whom It May Concern, It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Soeun Park. Soeun was employed by BNA as a co-op student in the fall term of 2022. During this term, Soeun worked a hybrid work mode where she worked remotely from home for 4 days and in the office for 1 day. She worked on the construction document set for a large-scaled condominium project. We found Soeun to be a quick learner and responsive to feedback. A few examples of the work she was responsible for include but not limited to: setting up all the slab edge drawings required for the project, tagging all wall types in every unit plans, as well as locating all automatic door operators per code requirement. She worked predominantly in Revit when working on the construction document set. Prior to starting her work term, Soeun was provided with a list of Revit training tutorials and best practice guidelines to go through as preparation. Her hard work paid off because she was able to complete her tasks in Revit with accuracy and efficiency. She also took our comments about the drawing set seriously and was able to fully complete given tasks with precision after initial round of comments. Soeun is well organized and successfully managed and tracked all the different types of working drawing tasks and helped to develop our bid set. She made sure the information she was responsible for on the CD set was always up to date. Soeun is motivated, reliable, and very hardworking. It was a pleasure working with her and I recommend her to any potential employer without hesitation. Yours very truly,

The Collective is an affordable cohousing proposal design development and housing alienation in Preston, Ontario.

ned to address transit-oriented neighbourhood

MTSA Neighbourhood Design In collaboration with Phillis Yang Completed in April 2023

Located on the block of the new proposed ION LRT stop, this strategy encourages its flourishing future as a significant urban plaza. The two residential developments primarily house families, elderly, new families and single parents supported by a daycare, elderly care facility, pharmacies, clinics, a communal kitchen and cafe. The collective offers a range of one to five bedroom units, providing adaptable spaces for families as they grow or change. The overall development strategy aims to revitalize Preston as the downtown it was and accommodate the projected density by introducing the redevelopment of the “T zone,” the intersection between the green corridor along the Speed River and the downtown corridor along King Street, at which the LRT stop is also located. The proposed strategy suggests mid to high rise residential developments, public amenities, and a pedestrian friendly King Street.

The building is composed of a concrete superstructure clad with an aluminum composite panel system. Precise material selection and simple construction will keep costs and waste low, to prioritize affordability, equity and inclusivity for all incoming residents. The southeast building features a greenhouse, edible garden and green roof, providing a sense of autonomy to the familities, all while thriving in a social living environment.

To preserve the contrasting nature of these two programs, a communal eating and reading space provides the connection. Each program is separated into its own block and glass volumes are used to transition between each interior space, as well as from the interior to exterior courtyards. The volumes are orientated in such a way that encourages dynamic circulation and consequently creates courtyards, each designated with a different purpose in order to fully utilize the outdoor space.

Form Follow Fungus is a proposed high-rise which aims well as explore ideas of ecology in the context of skyscra

s to address a number of Toronto’s housing needs, as aper design.

Beebreader/Buildner’s ”Skyhive 05” competition, shortlisted In collaboration with Avina Gonen, Grace Liang, Megan Sousa Completed in June 2022

The tower is located at the major downtown intersection of Bloor St. and Spadina Ave., a walkable distance from the University of Toronto campus - making it an ideal location for students and young adults entering the workforce. The program is divided into four components: retail and office spaces, student living, single and double rooms, and resident amenities.

The project employs a system of fungi-shaped planting terraces to filter the tower’s greywater and use it to humidify the “core” where mycelium, the precursor to fungi, can be cultivated quickly and harvested to support the building’s mechanical systems. Mycelium is used in both dried and living form as an insulation method. Mycelium composite can be packed once harvested into humidity controlled panels to use as living insulation, or the dried medium is poured into panel units, demoulded and through chitin fuses, formed into tough building-ready material.

Paul Pfeiffer Exhibition MOCA Geffen Contemporary, LA Due to open in November 2023 The 30,000 sq ft. exhibition design for artist Paul Pfeiffer at MOCA Geffen Contemporary in LA includes a series of wood-frame construction volumes reminiscent of film production studios where large video works and installations will be placed. Known for his photography, video works and large-scale installations, Pfeiffer cleverly manipulates popular media, images and video technology to reveal the ‘constructed’ truth beyond. For this project, I mainly worked on the 3D digital model on Rhino, conceptual collages on photoshop and illustrator for the client, and a physical detail model per client request. I was also involved in the biweekly meetings with the client, the MOCA staff, and their architects who were working on the construction set simutaneously.

Little Rascal Nolita, NY Construction to begin in January 2024 This mediterrean bar/restaurant renovation aims to reflect Turkish culture, art and colours throughout the design. For this project, I was mainly involved with digital modelling the space on Rhino as well as schematic design collages on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Later, I worked on the construction set on AutoCAD, consisting of the demolition plan, construction plan, RCP, interior elevations, wall types and details.

Participant INC Gallery SoHo, NY Due to open in late Fall 2023 Partipant INC Gallery is a not-for-profit space that overtime has become an unofficial community hub for avant-garde. It hosts an exhibition space, open storage for artsist estates represented by Participant INC, and an open work area for the staff. For this project, I was mainly involved with digital modelling the space on Rhino as well as schematic design collages on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. These images were later sent to the client for review.

Dune House Upstate, NY Design Development Phase This luxury residence in Upstate NY features a open floor plan, an abundance of communal living space, numerous bedrooms for the large family with views towards the river and natural landscape. For this project, I was mainly involved with digital modelling the space on Rhino as well as schematic design collages on Enscape, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. These images were later sent to the client for review.

Grand Studio Design Build Program UW School of Architecture, Cambridge, ON May to August 2022 Tiny Home - Exterior Greenhouse Addition Exhibited at Cambridge City Hall for six weeks beginning September 2022 In partnership with the City of Cambridge, Grand Studio at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture launched the Tiny Homes project, led by John McMinn, and offered as an elective to students during my 2B semester. The initiative explored tiny homes as a prototype for a fast, accessible and affordable housing solution. The two mirrored halves feature a greenhouse and an off-grid, insulated living shelter. Throughout the four months, my group and I worked on the exterior greenhouse portion of this tiny home alongside the workshop staff and professors. Some of the tasks included drafting 2D drawings with dimensions in Rhino, learning about wood member connections and different construction tools, ordering materials and building the frame.

Personal Work September 2019 to April 2020 Many of the pieces made during this time was an opportunity for experimentation of mixed media art. On a variety of canvases, I enjoyed working with paints, markers, pencils, pens and stencils to observe relationships between people, spaces and everyday objects.
