Sofía Sánchez Urbano
An efficient and creative young architect interested in architecture for the citizens. I see architecture in urban projects, as well as in little details such as a handle. In my experience I have in group and individually worked in Spain and abroad. Also, I believe that we get to know the architecture through our travels and language skills.

Pop cultural center / “Battersea Power Station”, London Master thesis of architecture / tutor: Luis Pancorbo
The project takes into account the proximity of the station to the Thames River to create a path around the river that would communicate the Nine Elms area on its northern perimeter. The project consists of the transition and communication between the vertical plane “attached” to the east building of the Battersea Power Station, and the “empty” horizontal plane between the buildings of the station. In order to create this, the vertical modulation of the previous vertical structure is adopted. The transition between the two planes works through of vertical bands, modulated according to the aforementioned structure to accommodate communication elements and the primary and secondary entries. When we reach the horizontal plane these bands “land” creating a square. Height differences allow the visitor to rise to the museum entrance. The main material in the enclosure is metal grid, which allows a translucent effect and at the same time a structural resistance in a walkable roof. The vertical structure of this layer follows the modulation of the bands by pillars HEB-500 type. The beams are performed in-situ and space them “trays” support described below. It is taken as a reference the structure designed by Marcel Lods in the second half of the 20th century, whose floor is prefabricated, and streamlines the process.

“Bombyx Mori”
Contest: Urban renovation and library, Almeria, Spain Colaboration with Javier Ciancas Martínez
MOMBYX MORI, aims to be a driving element that brings together urban cultural activities and creates a recognizable Almeria for the citizens of this city landmark. There are two different areas in which it acts differently: -Santos Zarate road side: Composed of walls parallels to the front facade. These walls will break crosswise to make way for the new circulations. -Concordia road side: It has greater spatial movement due to its tectonic structure inside. It is where the parts of the broader program are located. Our parasite ascends to the floor, guiding the visitor from the access toward public parts that need immediate access. These areas are communicated inside the building or across the courtyard through gateways. This double movement allows different combinations to cut the passage depending on the activity being performed. We continue ascending to the first level where there are more obvious differences between the languages of the two sides. In the Concordia part of the floor structure disappears between the first and second floor to form a single height that hosts the Reading Room and Newspaper Archive on the mezzanine. Below the mezzanine continues, in the Santos Zarate side, the books lodge which is compressed between the following load-bearing walls, creating close areas to work. It includes the bibliographic resource and the children’s reading room, whose access is totally separate from the access to the general reading room. The second level of the Santos Zárate side deals with the administrative area. Furthermore, the second level of the general reading room has access to the terrace directed to the south, where outdoor events will be organized.
VELUX Contest: A miraculous Apparition
Every seven years, the image of the Virgin of “El Rocio” is taken from his village to another called ‘Almonte’, where originally the 15th century apparition took place. On August 18 of each year, when the sun sets, members of fraternities cover the figure of the virgin entirely and carry it through the dark and dusty road. Our intervention improves the transition to natural light to stimulate the mystical moment when the Virgin and the pilgrims gather in the morning. The project consists of a cocoon that works like a torch along the dark road. The cocoon is made of a textile composite that is structured by cells which combine two different technologies: The external part using photovoltaic cells to generate electrical charges to activate the movement of opening and closing of the fabric. Inside, each cell has the geometry of a small dowel and light that forms the stable geometry when the textile polymer closed. The material used for this special material is also known as “artificial muscle”. It is made of two laminar conductive polymer bonded together by a layer of polyelectrolyte. The direction followed by the bulk flow of electrons makes conductive polymers stretch and shrink, respectively.
“DECUT” Neighborhood and urban regeneration / Barrio del Pilar in Madrid Spain Projects 8 - 2013
Group José González Gallegos The current situation in the del Pilar” is rather a degraded Because of this present gaps in that would return the character necessary to unify the residents in
neighborhood of “Barrio place due to its history. the block, a performance to the neighborhood is the place where they live.
The operation makes a straight cut 6 meters high in this group of buildings, providing a unique joint between blocks, releaseing communications and offering a variety of functions. The program consists of different levels: First we hace basic functions in the block perimeter that are shared between residents such as laundry, clothesline and workshops. The closer we get to the central blocks, we find more general functions for a bigger amount of people. To connect the “CUT” to the neighborhood, we use walkways and bridges linking the project to the site and ensure the option of multiple entries, from the shopping center or the subway. Finally, the “CUT” affects nearby plants spreading to nearby homes with “porosity,” while those that are farther away are more private. There are different forms of occupation through convertible furniture and walls that can be collected during the day, changing the concept of space according to what is needed.

Old Legazpi market renovation, Madrid, Spain Projects 7 - 2013
Group Ruiz Cabrero Teachers: Gabriel Ruiz Cabrero / Álvaro Soto / Sergio Martín Blas / Isabel Rodríguez Martín Colaboration: Álvaro Rodríguez Caballero / Nacho López Carrizo / Melissa Piret (erasmus) At the edge of the Manzanares River, and at the end of “Madrid Rio”, is located the former fruit and vegetable market of Legazpi. The project, designed by the architect Javier Ferrero Usía and the engineer Luis Bellido, occupies an area of 31,354 m2 and has been in use since the 80s. The project is based on bringing together different functional volumes through the re-use of the existing “street” with 6 m minimal width. The vertical communication is done through vertical lift and stairs and the culmination of this street in the form of ramp that overlooks the square of Legazpi. Downstairs are located the bus station (which solves the accumulation of the square), workshops, coworking spaces, multipurpose spaces that give access to Madrid river, shops, and in the southern corner is located an auditorium. The first floor houses facing the street and Madrid River lie on the one hand, and on the other hand offices and workspacesform the coworking area. The houses are divided into three types according to the number of occupants, 1, 2 or 4, aimed at students and coworking members.

Social housing, Cordoba, Spain Projects 6 - 2012
Group Ruiz Cabrero Teachers: Gabriel Ruiz Cabrero / Sergio Martín Blas / Isabel Rodríguez Martín In the Costanillas Street, across the river from the Mosque of Cordoba, is where the project is situated. Around it, there were a hotel and different sets of houses and the river Guadalquivir. The project consists of several blocks that are organized as terraces at different heights because the area isn’t plane. In this way, each block has a pedestrian access from the street nearby without using stairs. Moreover the garden terraces are a nice and cool place, whose function is to be transit area and playground. To organize the various blocks of flats, the projects uses a grid of 5x5 m, exact mesure of each house’s width. In the basement we find the garage with 90 places and 45 storage rooms. The houses are in a row type, and have two floors each of them. Every block consists of two overlapping houses and walkways are used to communicate the blocks between them. The houses all start from the same base on the ground floor, and develop differently depending on the number of users. (1,2,4 or 5).

House renovation in Entrevías neighborhood, Madrid - Spain Projects 6 - 2012
Group Ruiz Cabrero Teachers: Gabriel Ruiz Cabrero / Sergio Martín Blas / Isabel Rodriguez Martín During the 50s, there was a strong movement of migration from the countryside to the city. In the case of Madrid, the neighborhood Entrevías was designed to receive people from the countryside in the form of social housing for the minimum needs and customs. The housing group was made of rows of houses which depth was 3,6 m since the plan was modulated in a grid of 3,6x3,6 m. At the entrance there was a garden area and behind the kitchen was located a terrace, while the rooms were on the top floor. The project consists of a renovation that brings together two row houses creating one. This way we find 3 concrete walls as the basis of the project structure: 2 on either side and one on the central axis of the project. On the ground floor of the project we found the hall, guest toilet, and the kitchen which gives access to the terrace, and finally the lounge next to the dining room that is double- height. Upstairs there are two bedrooms for single or double occupants and a double room, while the bathroom is common to all of the rooms.

House renovation in Cordoba - Spain Projects 6 - 2012
Group Ruiz Cabrero Teachers: Gabriel Ruiz Cabrero / Sergio Martín Blas / Isabel Rodriguez Martín
Cordoba is well known for the concept of “Patio House” developed in the historic town. This project which is located in the Costanillas Road nº 36 is a house for four users: Two adults and two children. Around the courtyard are the different rooms in the house. On the ground floor there is the kitchen, a guest toilet and the living room. On the first floor we can find the main rooms, among which there are two individuals that face the street while parents double room is illuminated by the yard. On the top floor we have a terrace and a workspace. The courtyard in the project plays an important role as it maintains a cool temperature in summer and can be decorated with vegetation. It is undoubtedly the place where family life takes place, the heart of the house.
