OPEN ARCHITECTURE 5th semester, research
Group/individual:

Site:
Nørre Vosborg, Denmark
Brief:
A transformation process of an existing architectural work. The research of this semester functioned as preperation for our study trip to Camino de Santiago in the spring-semester.
Project introduction:
This research semester has been a continous process of gaining knowledge about a buildings typology, form and other spacial qualitites. Our case study was to examine the new hotel-barn at Nørre Vosborg, a transformation-project by the architectural firm Arkitema. Through different phases, a new architecture developed. The final result should remain open; it should be able to transform and adapt to other situations on new parameters. In our process of creating a new architecture, it became important for us to focus on certain spacial qualities. Light; its way of creating and revealing spaces, Transitions - from inside to outside/dark to light, and the large, open rooms of the hotel-barn.

A SECLUDED RETREAT 6th semester
Group/individual:
Anahita Koosha
Site:
Santiago de Compostella, Spain
Brief:
Transformation of a historic ruin, and thereby making a temporary shelter for those walking the Camino de Santiago.
Project introduction:
The Camino de Santiago is the name of any of the pilgrime routes which all leads to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella in northwestern Spain. Today, people choose to walk the Camino for many different reasons; either being religious, spiritual or simply as a break from their regular lives. When walking the Camino you slow down, you just walk. This project provides a proposal to build an untraditional ´albergue´ within a historical ruin in Santiago de Compostella in Spain. The spanish word ´albergues´, is a system of pilgrim hostels, a unique feature which provides the basic functions for the human body; water, climate, shelter and food. We want to provide a place which can meet more than just the physical needs. A secluded retreat, a comfortable place to stay as your journey comes to an end.
7
8
It varies how people chose to walk the Camino, some chose to walk alone, others walk in groups. Throughout the decades the popularity of the Camino routes has grown, and continues to do so each year. On the road you meet many different people, varying both in age and nationality. The social aspect of the Camino is inevitable. When one reaches the Cathederal the mindset change, you have completed the many weeks of walking. The ruin is situated just 1 km away from the Cathederal, and makes it an ideal place to provide a temporary stay for the pilgrimmers.
The very characteristics of this ruin is the variation of the different spaces, as some a large and open, others are small and closed. The thick stone walls and the spaces which are framed, puts a great emphasis on the desire for seclusion, privacy and isolation.
9
10
The ruin is situated on the very border of Santiago de Compostela, in a deep valley where the Ponte Sarela river runs through the city. The history shows us that the river has made it ideal to have industrial complexes placed here. This is also the case of our ruin, which for many decades served as a leather factory.

courtyard
This project consists of five dwellings, independent from one another, each with their own personal courtyard. In addition to the dwellings, a sixth volume functions as reception. In terms of construction, the dwellings are prefabricated modules, built up by a steel and in a portal framed structure. Both the interior and exterior walls are covered in wooden panels. The choice of material makes the dwelling both an inexpensive and also a light volume which easily can be lifted and placed into the ruin.

The spaces within each volume is organised so that the more extrovert spaces, kitchen and combined living room, are facing the courtyard. Bathroom and sleeping arrangements are hidden in the more private areas of the dwelling. A solution due to the minimal space was to have a mezzanine sleeping area in the pitched roof. In this room we have also placed a skylight. With the two openings on each side of the dwelling, light enters through during all hours of the day.
On the facade towards the courtyard, the wall will have a large glass opening. The idea is to create a transparent boundary between the internal and external space. The large opening consists of glass accordation doors which can be modulated and allowing natural light and fresh air flow through. In the common room of the dwelling, you will have a view towards your own intimate courtyard. The opening creates a view without sacrificing the privacy; the planned landscape of levels, the placement of the other dwellings and the old ruin walls screen your own personal space.

In the placement of the dwellings we have made a connection to the ruin, emphasising its structural and aesthetic value. Light enters through a great variation of openings; there is no order regarding size nor placement

CITY UNIVERSITAIRE II 4th semester
Group/individual:

Site:
City Universitaire, Paris
Brief:
Urban planning involving the problematic peripherique in Paris, as well as housing for students and families.
Project introduction:
Our site consists of three different areas; the City Universitaire, Gentilly and an area of appartment complexes on the border of Montrouge. City Universitaire has qualities which makes the neighbourhoods attractive for the inhabitants. Both areas consists of open and public spaces which opens up for interaction. The apartment complexes on the other hand are large, identidal buildings, creating an introvert environment, where the in-between spares are not cared for. In our assignment we want to extend the university park, over the Peripherique, and creating a connection ot Gentilly and Montrouge. On our extended new landscape, covering the Peripherique, new student housing is built. This area becomes an in-between space which reaches out to all three areas. Along with student housing we want to create an open public space which is inviting for all citizens in this area of Paris.

An idea to create an artificial landscape. This landscape will stretch all the way from the uni-park, and all the way towards the bridge crossing autotroute du soleil. In this way, the habitants of the three different areas will be connected. On this new landscape there will be units of student housing, and a public park.

Site:
Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Brief:
Transformation of an unhabited lot in a traditional puerto rican neighbourhood.
Project introduction:
In Old San Juan, the renaissance ideal of symmetry and order is reflected in the architecture of the city. In short, San Juan consists of buildings, streets and the city plazas; zones of private and public zones. A typical residence includes the zaguan, salon and patio. The patio functions as the center of the residence, and is important both socially and climatically. The many rooms and openings gives good solution to ventilation in this hot and humid climate. In our project we want to create two dwellings. Although the inhabitants will have their own seperate unit, the patio will function as a meeting place. This challenges the traditional puerto rican way of living, in which there is strict seperations between the public and the private. In this project we want to emphasize the history of this plot, and therefore preserve most of the existing material at the site. Also, we want to learn from the local building-tradition, as well as the climate.

In this project we want to keep the existing walls surrounding the residences. The old walls tells us something about the history of the site, and gives us an insight into the traditional building traditions and materials. In consideration to the aesthetic values of the existing, we want to keep the exterior stair of bricks, and also build the new residences of this same material.

Project introduction:
During the last years Thisted municipality has made different buildings available for the Aarhus School of Architecture, as a part of a larger research project. In the spring of 2012 three buildings were placed in the hands of firstyear-students, which resulted in an exhibition at the school. The exhibition is something we wanted to take a step further at Krabbesholm Højskole. As a part of the research project, the exhibition revolved around the demographic changes happening in Denmark, in which the population moved in a large extend from the provinces towards the larger cities. This development left a large amount of empty buildings, which led to almost abandoned villages. To investigate this problematic issue, we as the students, tried to see how the buildings had potential to be something new. Through a selective and systematic dissection of the buildings, we came to understand what was left behind, regarding the physical material as well as the history and it’s memories. The exhibition at Krabbesholm is a further development from the first exhibition, and consists of material from the three houses, as well as the documentation of the process.
