The “B” Conference USSSA has 22 teams and is always one of the most competitive categories. It combines the emerging new bloods with the veterans.

In 2013 (3) three Major teams will take the field. Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton, the reigning Major World Series Champions, Resmondo/Worth (FL) and Shoppe/TYJA/Louisville Slugger (TN).
program will be Conference and Major World Series Champion again in 2013. Softball Today polling highlighted one thing, that many of the A & B programs were welcoming the opportunity to compete with the Major teams more than ever before. The strength and talent has now been distributed across the landscape of lower programs. This should provide younger talent access to making its mark in today’s Conference USSSA program. We hope this creates more A&B upsets of the 2013 Major team’s. The teams to watch at the top of the A division are GTL/Doerflinger/R&M Metals/Easton (IA), Nordkap / Suncoast Reebok (MN), Albicocco/The Scene/Easton (NY), and Demarini/Dirty/Xtreme Athletics (FL). We think they are the class of the eight “A” programs. GTL/Doerflinger/R&M Metals/Easton are back as the defending A World Champions with some solid additions and sponsorship. The four mentioned contenders should have some epic battles during the season. There will be no doubt that Linedrive, Taylormade, 4-TheFallen, and Sonny’s will have much to say as well. The division is ripe with competition for 2013. The strong A team’s combined with a strong collection of B programs should create an exciting “A” World Series in 2013. The “B” Conference USSSA has 22 teams and
is always the most competitive category. It combines the emerging new bloods with the veterans. It is often considered a division where solid defense, athleticism, and pitching reap its rewards when all is said and done. The early favorites are Red's Astros/Louisville Slugger (IN), OC Swats/Easton (CA), Baugh Ford / Mojo / Louisville Slugger (MI), Buzini/Buffalo Wild Wings/Worth (MS), and Xtreme/Miken (MN). This only being 25% of the division leaves plenty of room for Famous/ Easton, Pure Romance, PrimeTime/Easton, Headhunter Chronicles/Baden, and an always strong Fence Brokers Inc/Hubs Pub/Game Time Supply/Worth and Combat Rockstar. All of these teams have benefitted from the distribution of talent and new sponsorship dollars. They still revel in beating each other because ultimately they are eligible for multiple USSSA World Series events. The stronger “B” teams are fearless. These programs will knock off the teams above them because the times have changed and USSSA has helped in 2013 in several ways. The Conference “B” tournament champion can earn a Major World series birth. This is a great division of teams to watch within Conference USSSA with many of them regional. The “C” Conference USSSA division is now at 12 teams. Since more than half are unknown
Softball Today • March 2013
The 2013 Conference USSSA has begun another season that should prove to be its most exciting and competitive from top to bottom. It is difficult to argue that the Conference is not only successful but it is flourishing. It appears there will be 45 conference teams in 2013. They breakdown as three (Major) teams, eight (A) teams, twentytwo (B) teams, and twelve (C) teams. There is no denying the USSSA Conference has grown softball into a talent rich competitive series. Today to be the best is to consolidate resources with quality sponsors to compete nationally. Talented players and sponsored teams can experience the Conference and compete at a level that promotes better competition. Under the Conference USSSA format the “B” and “C” teams enjoy the opportunity to compete against “A” or Major teams. There are many quality players spread throughout Conference and non-Conference “B” and “C” teams. This is the top series that promotes all levels of men’s slow-pitch softball together. This year looks to see a more competitive balance across the 23 tournament events and multiple World Series. The broadcast of Conference events can be found on several online sites and the Major World Series will be covered on ESPN 3 and USSSA Live this season. The tournaments also include non-conference teams. The anticipation around on-field competition has garnered much attention. This season Conference USSSA has a very balanced and talent rich “A” & “B” program with wholesale consolidations in the “A” program team’s. It should prove to be a very competitive season across the board. We polled coaches and players in the Conference and the consensus is there has been a serious collection of All-Stars on the top 4 programs. Overall, most believe this is the year to knock them off as many teams are talent rich with up and coming future stars seeking to make their names and give recognition to their sponsors. In 2013 (3) three Major teams will take the field. Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton, the reigning Major World Series Champions, Resmondo/Worth (FL) and Shoppe/TYJA/Louisville Slugger (TN) are talent rich and will be formidable each weekend. They all have very successful histories and each have added new personnel. The changes on the field have placed some emphasis on adding younger, more up and coming talent to mesh with their already proven veterans of the game. The teams will be very strong and will certainly renew annual rivalries as Resmondo/Worth looks to get back on top throughout the 2013 season. We believe a major

The teams to watch at the top of the A division is GTL/Doerflinger/R&M Metals/Easton (IA), Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok (MN), Albicocco/The Scene/Easton (NY), and Demarini/Dirty/Xtreme Athletics (FL).

San Diego, CA-This time of year always reminds us of the goodwill and sacrifice people make for others. It can be contributions of civilian community service members, Law Enforcement, First-Responders, Wounded Warriors, and our Retired and Active Duty service members. A time of giving too many of the less fortunate who serve us. We are honored by the recognition of our Active Duty military personnel and veterans for their tireless commitment to our freedoms. As many long-time softball players know the annual pilgrimage to the Marine T4T/Wounded Warrior/Operation Mend Classic and participation is a rebirth to renew old friendships and contribute to worthy causes.
8
Wounded Warrior Sgt. Odin Ayala enjoys the festivities.
A time to celebrate life to help less fortunate children, service men and women, and their families throughout the United States experience the joy of our holidays up to Easter; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable resources - our children; to unite all members of our local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign that touches so many families. This event also coincides with a corporate awareness fundraiser to benefit Southern California Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org and give recognition to Operation Mend http://operationmend.ucla.edu to help change people's lives in a positive way. The National Program Director stated "this event always represents giving and those who benefit from all the participants gifts, are the real winners. It's inspiring to see many of the same people each year competing, contributing, and having fun." This event over 2 years has grown into the finest collection of local, national, and corporate supporters, the best of the best in helping Wounded Warriors and Children" The play is extraordinary featuring 15 teams this year. It should be pointed out that in 2012 the event added new corporate sponsors that donated over $42,000.00 directly to various support programs. A huge cash of Toys was donated that benefitted Toys-For-Tots. Their generosity remains anonymous by request. A new program added this year was special programs for deployed service members' children to have multiple sports training clinics and computer education. It includes professionals in softball, baseball, football, Lacrosse, swimming, and soccer. Easton Sports Chris Chaney, Brett Helmer, and multiple professional athletes will be participating in this program in 2013. Yet it is the generosity of all the players and sponsor's
contributions that makes these gifts and giving to needy children, service member's families, Operation Mend, and Wounded Warrior Programs so impactful. There is strength in numbers. The history of the softball event gifting mirrors the efforts throughout the years of the United States Marine Corps incredible Toys-For-Tots program. The Open Division of 15 teams played in a Bat Provided EASTON BRING UR REAL SKILZ format, saw strong performances all day from multiple Command, Civilian, and Contractor teams. The Homerun Competition was won by Marine David Thompson with 9 HR's out of 11 pitches. The tournament concluded with undefeated Powerhouses TSE TRADITION and WARRIORS-1 in a final that saw incredible defense early with a final inning finish that would rival any softball championship. TSE TRADITION riding a 5-run lead in the top of the seventh would soon be tested. Warrior-1 down 7-2 rallied with a "Showtime"style 16-run seventh on 3 grand slams and two 2-run homers. TSE TRADITION now a bit staggered entered the bottom of the seventh down 18-7. Four 2-run HRS with one out cutting the lead to 18-15 including a 450 foot bomb by MVP & Marine David Thompson inspired a rowdy crowd. After four hits by TSE TRADITION, the lead was narrowed to 18-17. Warriors-1 walked the bases loaded after the second out of the inning. The game in the balance, a two run single by Pitcher Chris Chaney gave TSE TRADITION the victory 19-18. It was a truly exciting tournament final. The Tournament MVP was Marine David Thompson of TSE TRADITION and Major Armando Delsi was the Offensive MVP. Chris Chaney was the Defensive MVP with TSE TRADITION. The winning team of TSE TRADITION donated the generous prize package and awards back to one of the event beneficiaries.
"A" National Champions Sonny's Softball Club based out of Casper, Wyoming.

Oklahoma City, OK. --- A rite of passage for all ASA National Slow-Pitch Champions is a weekend in Hall of Fame stadium. It's now consistently broadcast on media where everyone has the opportunity to watch. The viewership and fan attendance was a record in 2012 and was hampered by a constant rain all day Saturday. A welcomed rain for the 2012 ASA "A" National Champions Sonny's Softball Club based out of Casper, Wyoming. This year featured defending Champion Annihilation/Easton that was still one of the true all-star squads and a recent two time winner under different names. Easton's Brett Helmer was looking for his 5th ASA title going back to Chaney's/Easton in 2006. The quality of players and parity certainly has improved in the 2012 National Championship. The challengers to the throne in 2012 were powerhouses Desert Falls/Demarini/Dirty (4th), Nordkap (5th), U.S. Armed Forces (9th), Team Reebok/Longhaul/TYJA (9th), Sonny's Softball Club (1st), and 3rd Street Financial/Team Cincinnati (2nd). In the past favorite teams such as Team Combat/Pacific Headwear (10th), Diosa (7th) BBS/Miken (5th), and Shoppe/Team TPS/Elite (9th) have struggled at this championship. The tournament moved along very quickly as many of the early favorites fell to red hot newcomers. The final four of this event was lead by winners bracket champs 3rd Street Financial/Team Cincinnati with a collaboration of the Queen City's best Non-RPL players. Desert Falls lost a closely contested game to 3rd
Street 37-36. Sonny's sailed past Annihilation/Easton with an upset 36-30 scoring 15 runs in the 5th inning. Sonny's looked poised with consistent hitting and strategic homerun usage. It proved important in their ladder games. The winners finals was now set as Sonny's Softball Club based out of Casper, Wyoming would face 3rd Street Financial of Cincinnati, Ohio. This Saturday night game was well fought throughout. 3rd Street Financial, the favorite at this time, mounted a 5th inning barrage to draw the game close at 27-26. The 6th inning ended with Sonny's on top with a 36-32 convincing lead. 3rd Street battled with defense to hold Sonny's scoreless in the top of the 7th inning. 3rd Street Financial began the bottom of the 7th trailing and quickly cut the lead to 1 run 36-35. They loaded the bases and with the game in the balance 3rd Street Financials Dan Houchin stepped in and blasted a game winning walk-off grand slam to win the game. They would now await the winner of Annihilation/Easton and Sonny's Softball Club. Sonny's started slowly trailing Annihilation by 8 runs in the 3rd inning. Sonny's jumped on Annihilation pitching in the 4th and 5th innings scoring 22 runs and lead after 6 innings. Sonny's reached the top of the 7th inning with a 7 run lead and 2011 defending National Champions Annihilation appeared confident with 3 remaining bombs. Annihilation cut the lead to 4 runs in top of the 7th with men at first and second. What happened next was the unthinkable for Annihilation; a force play at 2nd base on a smash followed by a snap throw and backdoor tag out at third base for the second out. The batter then attempted to capture second and was tagged out. It was an amazing 4-
6-5-6 triple play to end the contest. Sonny's would now have to double dip a powerful 3rd Street Financial for a revenge National Title fight. The Championship game was a battle of wills as both teams started sluggish. It was Sonny's that took control of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings and took a 20-8 lead into the seventh inning. Sonny's was lead by Chris Greinert (MVP & 1st Team All American) and fellow 1st team All Americans Jonathan Lenz, West Guill, Lexi Ramirez, and Manny Lariano. 3rd Street Financial mounted a late inning comeback but would lose 20-15 as Sonny's now smelled blood in the water and a National Title looming. The "if" game featured intense action on both sides of the ball and that impacted the final results. 3rd Street Financial controlled the early innings with defense and a resolute offense and lead Sonny's 18-10. Sonny's found their offense in the 6th inning with a 7 run outburst and went into the 7th inning down 18-17. The 7th inning was a nail biter and held all the anxiety one could take with the ASA "A" National Championship in the balance. 3rd Street Financial had two outs with a runner on first in Sonny's top of the seventh. Sonny's Brian Faria stepped in and launched a timely 2 run-homer that gave Sonny's a 1 run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Sonny's pitcher Danny Lopez (DLO) fighting a broken thumb stepped in and served up three outs with a line drive to first and a 5-3 groundout. The game ended in DLO'S glove as he snared a smash directly at him for Sonny's "A" ASA National Championship in 2012. "This was very satisfying for us who were together all season and giving Sonny this ASA Title means a lot to each of us," stated tournament MVP and first team All American Chris Greinert.

By eliminating vibration, it allows us to crank up the performance on an end-loaded barrel without sacrificing confidence. So if you’re feeling deranged, pick this sucker up and start swinging out of your mind.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., --- At Walt Disney World, the softball season never ends. Disney Sports offers amateur athletes, coaches and their families the opportunity to train, compete, gain recruitment and celebrate like the pros at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. From Disney Softball Spring Training, which includes teams from all over the country, high school and college, to the rest of the year when travel teams ranging from youngsters playing fast pitch, to veterans playing slow pitch, the nine fields at Disney’s wellmanicured ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex are packed throughout the year, but getting to Disney is just the start. Disney didn’t make its fortune offering freebies, so teams at every level have to start raising funds in advance. To help, Disney offers financial assistance through fundraising programs, early registration discounts, and multiple team incentives. Disney makes every effort to attract teams from around the country at every age and skill level. From attending national trade shows and clinics to create awareness, to having their sales team get in touch with travel teams and high schools, Disney’s goal is to allow every athlete the opportunity to experience playing at the next level at ESPN
Wide World of Sports Complex. “We contact them year-round,’’ said Jeff Sturgeon, Manager of Sports Development at Walt Disney World. “We want the best teams we can get and we make sure to fit it in to their schedule.’’ The peak time of the year is March and April, when high schools and colleges from all over the country flock to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for Disney Spring Training. More than 400 high schools and colleges came to Florida this year to participate in multiple sports including softball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and golf. Almost half of those schools attended for Softball Spring Training. “We make sure to follow the school calendars when we invite them,’’ Sturgeon said. “Of course schools can contact us as well.’’ The cost of getting to Disney is on the shoulders of the
team, but once the team gets to Disney, there are certain perks. According to Sturgeon, they get plenty of practice with experts, access to the theme parks, hotel discounts and complimentary ground transportation. There is also a discount offered to families that travel with the teams. Disney Spring Training offers the ability to customize your schedule with practices, official games, and/or unofficial games. Sturgeon said that all game balls, umpires, scorekeepers and trainers are provided by Disney. Customized dining options are also available including boxed lunches that can be delivered to the field after your game. As for taking part in Disney Spring Training, all high school teams must adhere to their high school state federation’s rules and regulations. Application deadline is normally around the end of October, but you can save money on the entry fee cost by registering earlier in May. “We get plenty of people here for Softball Spring Training,’’ Sturgeon said. “The big event is girls softball in the spring, but the adults take over around September. We are busy all year, the place is in great shape, and everyone has a great time.’’ For more information, contact the Disney Spring Training Softball Sales Team at (407) 938-3801 or by visiting disneyspringtraining.com.

Oklahoma is built around the best. In softball, a dominant pitcher often times is the difference that determines the outcome of a game or even a championship. The Sooners have one of the best pitchers in college softball in Keilani Ricketts. Last year, she steered Oklahoma to the Women’s College World Series for a second straight year before the journey fell just short in a back-and-forth best-of-3 championship series not decided until the third game. This season, Ricketts is at it again, making the Sooners contenders once more. In early April, the Sooners were the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Understandably so, after an impressive showing a few weeks earlier at the Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Oklahoma went 5-0 with five shutouts at the Fullerton tournament. The Sooners outscored their opponents, 33-0. Ricketts allowed just six hits and three walks, while striking out 27 in 17 innings to go 3-0 in the tournament. That included a 4-0 shutout over No. 14 Arizona in which she allowed just three hits. She also had three hits and drove in two runs from the plate during the tournament. “She was on her game,” Oklahoma first baseman Lauren Chamberlain said of Ricketts following the win over Arizona in an interview with SoonerSports.com. “I think that gets the rest of the team on her level. We see her excitement on playing a ranked team and just getting after this win, and we just want to get on with it.” Ricketts improved to 13-0 following the win over the Wildcats in which she struck out seven and walked one. Chamberlain hit a pair of home runs in the win, cranking her third leadoff homer of the season. She also belted a solo shot to left to lead off the fourth inning. “I was just trying to be productive at the plate, get things going for my team,” Chamberlain said. “This is a momentum game, and I was just trying to use my leadoff spot to get things going.” Outfielder Brianna Turang went 2 for 3, Ricketts was 1 for 2 and center fielder Destinee Martinez was 1 for 3 with a stolen base. Oklahoma’s win over Arizona bumped the Sooners’ record to 9-1 against ranked teams through that point in the season. Oklahoma outscored those 10 opponents, 61-4. “I think we just go in with a mentality of bowing up, and that we’re ranked No. 1 for a reason,” Chamberlain said. “We’re just trying to keep playing Sooner softball.” Michigan went 4-1, picking up three big-time wins over Pac-12 perennial powers. The No. 15 Wolverines beat No. 18 Washington, 6-1, as freshman Sierra Romero hit two solo home runs, Lauren Sweet blasted a three-run homer and sophomore pitcher Sara Driesenga allowed five hits and a walk while going the distance to pick up the win. By Jeff Berlinicke A softball pitcher is so much different than a baseball pitcher. A baseball pitcher gets the ball once every five days and is on a strict pitch count. Softball is another story. Many of the best high school teams in the nation use one pitcher the majority of the time and, when it’s time for the post-season or the regular season, a girl can pitch as many as four complete games in one day, then be expected to go right back at it the next day. Then, add the responsibility that comes with being the most important player on the team. Good softball teams rarely get into high scoring shootouts. Typically, at the highest level, it comes down to one run. One bad pitch can ruin everything. That’s a load for anyone to carry. Besides that, many great softball pitchers are usually the cleanup hitter, the one that has to score the winning run at bat, then hold onto the lead from the mound. Here are four pitchers who love the responsibility and, ,after chasing a state high school softball championship, are moving on to the next level at Division I.

Delanie Gourley lifted El Capitan High to new heights than the school had ever achieved, and that was in only her junior season. They defeated arch-rival Santana for the first time in years, then did it again to win the CIF San Diego Championship game. It was the first title in school history, and they’ve been playing softball for more than 40 years at El Capitan. Is chasing the San Diego California Interscholastic Federation Record of 1,106 Ks, Gourley was named the 2012 Softball Athlete of the Year at the 2012 Prep Athletes Awards Gala, hosted by the San Diego Sports Commission. She tallied 345 Ks her junior season, 335 her sophomore
BAYLEE CORBELLO
(Sam Houston High School, Lake Charles, La.)
Sydney Littlejohn has already had plenty of success. Her 16-select travel team, Texas Glory-Naudin faced some of the best travel teams in the country last summer. She went 6-1 with a 1.72 ERA and struck out 69 batters in 53 innings.
SYDNEY LITTLEJOHN (Rusk High School, Rusk, Texas) Texas is noted for its college softball schools and Sydney Littlejohn would have been a natural at Texas, Texas A&M or any of the other powerhouses, but she’s heading east to suit up at Alabama next season. Alabama is a power all by itself, winning the national championship in 2012. At 6-1, 180, she’s big enough for the college game and can bring the heat with her fastball. Littlejohn has already had plenty of success. Her 16select travel team, Texas Glory-Naudin faced some of the best travel teams in the country last summer. She went 61 with a 1.72 ERA and struck out 69 batters in 53 innings. She’ll join a loaded Alabama staff next year, so she won’t be getting the ball every day, but Alabama coach
Patrick Murphy said she’ll be a valuable addition. "Sydney is going to be a great addition to our pitching staff," Murphy said. "At 6-1, her height gives her an immediate great presence on the mound. Sydney has pitched at a high level of competition for years.’’ Littlejohn led her club team to a runner-up finish at the 2011 PGF Fastpitch National Championships, as well as to a fourth-place finish at the ASA Gold Nationals in Oklahoma City in 2012.
SHANNON SMITH
(Milford High School, Milford, Mass.) It takes some time to digest the numbers Shannon Smith has put up during her first three years in high school. Entering her senior year she had a career batting average of .450, struck out 861 batters and has posted a 61-3 career record to go with nine no-hitters and five perfect games. She’s also filled the school showcase with two Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year awards. Smith is headed for the University of Kentucky next fall and she’ll bring her nasty 60-plus mile and hour fastball to go with some devastating breaking stuff. Kentucky coach Rachel Lawson knew she got a steal when she was able to get Smith over some of the more well-known powers. “Shannon not only has an array of pitches, but possesses an outstanding ability to pitch the ball exactly where she wants to when the game is on the line,’’ Lawson said. “This pinpoint precision is essential when facing the outstanding line-ups in the SEC.” For the season, Baylee Corbello went 23-4 with a 0.86 earned run average and 337 strikeouts in 179 innings. At the plate, she hit .496 with 3 home runs and 39 RBIs. One of the homers came in the championship game.

year and 323 her first year at El Capitan. Gourley has eight no-hitters through her high school career and registered a 0.52 ERA her junior season to go along with a .544 batting clip and a .656 on-base percentage. Gourley, also earned a scholarship to travel across country and pitch for the University of Florida. “Delanie is a game-changer and program-changer,’’ said Florida coach Tim Walton. She’s a great kid, fun to watch and she’s truly an infectious player. Delanie is a left-handed pitcher with the ability to be a strikeout pitcher. She knows how to compete to the end and she knows how to win.” With her travel ball team, Gourley led the So Cal Athletics squad to both the 2011 and 2012 PGF 18U National Championship Titles. "It has been a great pleasure having Delanie on our softball team for the past 4 years. She is an outstanding player, but she is also an awesome person. Said El Capitan High school softball coach Joe Cota.
For Baylee Corbello, she wasn’t so sure she’d get a shot at winning her third straight championship last season. Winning championships is all she has known since ninth grade, but her school moved up a class, which meant tougher competition. No problem. Corbello led Sam Houston to a 2-1 win in the state title game, the championship game being a 2-1 win in nine innings. Corbello won the Miss Softball Award by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association For the season, Corbello went 23-4 with a 0.86 earned run average and 337 strikeouts in 179 innings. At the plate, she hit .496 with 3 home runs and 39 RBIs. One of the homers came in the championship game. Unlike many of the top pitchers in prep softball, Corbello, who combines a riser with some great offspeed pitches, decided to stay close to home. She’ll pitch at Louisiana State University, joining a strong freshman class throughout the Southeast Conference. LSU coach Beth Torina said Corbello will be a perfect fit in Baton Rouge. "As talented as Baylee is on the mound, her mental game is what gives her the greatest edge,’’ Torina said. “She is a fierce competitor and will do whatever it takes to help LSU win."
