Taking a Pitch • Always crowd the plate. Use this pitch to practice loading and weight shift, keeping the head quiet. • Roll in on all inside pitches, never allow the inside pitch to back you off the plate. • When taking a strike to allow a base runner to steal second base always drive the hands into the strike zone, and then pull back directly toward the catcher. This should momentarily freeze the catcher.

Sacrifice Bunting • Move up on the plate and to the front half of the box. This will increase the percentage for putting the ball down in fair territory. • Pivot early! As the pitcher reaches the set position, pivot into the proper bunting position. This method will help prevent hurrying the bunt and force the defense to commit themselves. • An early pivot will allow the hitter to be balanced and the ability to “slap” or “push” on command. • Execute your plan by bunting the first pitch thrown for a strike, and placing it in fair territory.

Hit and Run Technique • No thought process is needed! The toughest decision, to swing or not to swing, has been removed. Great call if a player is struggling at the plate. • You will be swinging! There is no need to be in a hurry. Slow all the actions down, center on detail and follow the pitch to the plate. • Think slow motion. There is no need to commit the upper body- WAIT • There will be a lot of holes opening up with the runner going on the pitch, so the key is for the batter to make solid contact and hit the ball on the ground.

Runners @ 2B and 3B (Less Than Two Outs) • It is an automatic “GO” on any ground ball hit to an infielder. The runner needs to get a good jump off the batted ball. • Force the the infield make a play @ the plate. • The worst case scenario is an out at the plate, with runners @ 2B and 3B again. Remember to “wheel” the runner around 1st and take 2B on the play.

Bat Review

Top level fastpitch players love the new Triton™ bats from Louisville Slugger® TPS®. Initially drawn to the unique 3-piece look and bubble transition, players who’ve stepped to the plate with a Triton have quickly learned that it has an extra stiff handle and a very large sweet spot. Triton is unique because it has a proprietary 3-X Composite design with three composite zones – barrel, handle, and Bubble Transition Zone – all made from 100 percent aerospace grade graphite. These three composite zones allow the barrel and handle to be designed and built as individual units. TPS then brings them together with the revolutionary BT Zone (Bubble Transition Zone) that unites the barrel and handle into a more advanced 1-piece bat. “Triton’s BT Zone links the barrel to the handle, optimizing their relationship,” said Louisville Slugger product developer James Sass. That makes a stiffer and stronger bat for outstanding performance.” With composites, performance and durability are dictated by the angle of the fibers and the wall thickness of the barrel. Louisville Slugger TPS’s high-strength fibers used in the Triton allow for the best angle for performance while keeping the barrel wall thin for maximum flexibility and trampoline effect. “We use multiple layers of aerospace grade graphite. These high-strength thin fibers allow us to use more layers for durability and still design a light, thin wall bat for performance,” Sass said. “Our exclusive computer-designed pattern precisely positions the angles of graphite layers, giving the Triton an extra-long barrel with a huge sweet spot and outstanding performance.” TPS embeds a specially-designed toughened epoxy resin to lock the graphite layers together. That’s what forms Triton’s light, durable thin wall design. This exclusive manufacturing process eliminates air between the graphite layers, giving players the ultimate combination of performance and durability. TPS STIFFNESS AND STRENGTH = POWER & PERFORMANCE Serious baseball players have learned that stiff handled bats are better than bats with handles that bend. Stiff handles mean power and performance, the very reason the majority of Major League Baseball® players today choose stiff handle maple bats over pliable ash. Louisville Slugger TPS’s stiff handle bats create more barrel flex, resulting in maximum trampoline effect and outstanding performance. Louisville Slugger TPS was the first bat maker to recognize that stiffness and strength equals power and performance. It revolutionized fastpitch, slow pitch softball, and baseball with its hi-tech stiff handle technology and strong alloys and composites, first with the popular Catalyst® models. TRITON MODELS, LENGTHS, AND WEIGHTS TPS Triton fastpitch bats from Louisville Slugger are ASA approved and available in two models and a variety of lengths and weight to suit any player’s game. The FP91T Triton is a minus 10 (-10) bat available in 30 in., 31 in., 32 in., 33 in., and 34 in. lengths, all with corresponding -10 weights (20 oz., 21 oz., 22 oz., 23 oz., 24 oz.)

Review: Louisville Slugger Triton FP91T The Triton FP91T was the perfect weight (Minus 10) for our high school aged reviewers. The first impression of the Triton FP91T was the fact that this bat has a smooth unique design. Our hitters put this bat to the test with well over 350 swings. Our reviewers across the board echoed the fact that this was a high performance bat. Several of our hitters felt this was the best Louisville bat they had ever swung. The bat consistently produced crisp line drives and all of our power hitters on hand were able to constantly go deep throughout the hitting session. The comfortable grip and overall feel of the bat were well appreciated. Our reviewers had no problems delivering great comments about the bat. “This bat is the hottest bat I have ever swung.” Said another reviewer, “I would definitely have to say this bat is in the top one or two best fast pitch bats out here. I can hit consistent line drives or I can take the ball deep. This is hands down my favorite Fast pitch bat.” After several hundred swings the bat showed literally no signs of durability problems.

Fearsome Pick: Florida Gators, 19-2 overall (As of March 6, 2009)

Perhaps the largest obstacles to all of the NCAA for the 2009 season are the ladies of the Florida Gators. We all remember their dominating performance during the 2008 season ending with a jaw-dropping record of 70-5 overall and concluding last year as the number one ranked team. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that we welcome them back as our number one pick for the 2009 season.

Returning to the pitching mound this year is senior Stacy Nelson who, last year, demonstrated a stellar performance with 363 strikeouts among 47 wins. The two-time NFCA and Easton All-American selection was also selected as the 2008 SEC Pitcher of the Year and was named one of the top-10 finalists for USA Softball National Player of the Year.

10

Joining Nelson on the mound is sophomore Stephanie Brombacher who went undefeated last year in 20 games with 123 strikeouts among 25 walks giving her an impressive five-to-one strikeout ratio. She will, undoubtedly, complement Nelson very well on the mound. Among the smokin’ Gators’ pitching lineup are returning senior centerfielder Kim Waleszonia, and two NFCA and Easton All-Americans, first baseman senior Ali Gardiner and sophomore second baseman Aja Paculba. With this impressive line of returning players, the light can do nothing but shine down on the Florida Gators.

Fearsome Pick: Washington Huskies, 17-0 overall (As of March 5, 2009)

Helping to fortify the top of the NCAA rankings for 2009 are the Washington Huskies who have really come out swinging for the fences and are delivering a bang worthy to be one of the most dominant teams out there. The Huskies are a huge breakout team from last year climbing from their number 32 spot with an overall record of 30-25 at the end of the 2008 season, to their current number 3 spot in the NCAA rankings with a perfect record of 17-0. There is no dispute that these ladies will be at the top of the heap for quite some time this season. One of the Huskies’ strongest assets is their overall team experience. First baseman, senior Ashlyn Watson, returns to the team, and not without bringing back her hot bat. With honors from ESPN: The Magazine and the Pac-10, and outstanding performances last year against powerhouse squads such as Arizona State and Florida, Watson will definitely be a player to keep an eye on. In fact, she has already began to shine as a key player against San Diego State earlier this season and finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the game while going 5-for-7 with two runs and five RBI in three games that weekend. Watson has much experience by her side this season as well. As a matter of fact, there is so much great talent returning to the team that the inner-team competition is through the roof. Junior pitcher Danielle Lawrie and senior infielder Ashley Charters, who both made the all-tournament team at the 2007 World Series, return as well. Huskies coach Heather Tarr commented, “We have a lot of talent and versatility. I’m going to have a hard time figuring out who to put in the starting lineup, and that’s a good thing.” Washington Huskies first baseman Ashlyn Watson Photo courtesy of University of Washington Athletics

Fearsome Pick: Alabama Crimson, Tide 13-1 (As of March 3, 2009)

Continued from page 10

The ladies of the Crimson Tide roll in as our number 3 pick thus far for the 2009 season. After an impressive run at the Women’s College World Series last year, these ladies have returned and have brought back some offensive firepower with them. Between going 58-8 on the 2008 season, ranking number 2 in the nation at the conclusion of last year, winning the SEC West by eight games, and making their 5th WCWS appearance in eight years, there is no reason why we shouldn’t see them giving the very top contenders a run for their money this year. Last season, Alabama set a school record for the most games won at the WCWS, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they went all of the way this year.

Returning double-threat, Charlotte Morgan, will be one of the largest powerhouses for the team. She not only stands as an outstanding pitcher, but can also blast one out of the park. Last year, as a first-team All-American she was the only player in the country to rank in the top 30 nationally in batting average (.417), home runs (19) and earned run average (1.27). She also led the nation with 79 RBI, which set both Alabama and SEC single-season records,” according to Rolltide.com. The list of achievements by Morgan from the 2008 season is endless, and with her being one of the only girls who can “hit the tree,” the 2009 season looks just as promising. Everything seems to be falling into place for Alabama. Morgan will be joined by two of the teams other great sluggers, Brittany Rogers (.452, 60 stolen bases), and Kelley Montalvo (.373, 10 Hrs). Together, this fearsome trio will prove to be very threatening to the opposition at the top of the list. Coach Patrick Murphy commented, “We stayed a little bit longer in Oklahoma City last year, but we want to stay a little bit longer this year, too.”

Fearsome Pick: UCLA Bruins, 19-2 overall (As of March 3, 2009) When talking about the top NCAA teams in almost any sport, you will find the UCLA Bruins to be at the top of the scoreboard, and softball is no different. Last year, during the 2008 season, the main goal, just as any team, was to qualify for a trip to the Women’s College World Series and take the national championship home. The lady Bruins put forth a valiant effort defeating their Pac-10 rival Arizona during first round play, but falling just short of their ultimate goal. This year, starting with a 19-2 overall record and current number 4 ranking in the nation, the Bruins are back with a vengeance. Perhaps the fiercest tools the Bruins arsenal have had come back to them are their pitchers. Sophomore Donna Kerr looks to be very promising this year after having a very solid freshman year. Kerr turned in an impressive freshman campaign, leading the Bruins with a 0.93 earned run average, which also ranked seventh in the nation. She went 14-2 with 132 strikeouts in 105 2/3 innings and came up with big performances against a pair of teams that advanced to the Super Regionals a year ago. She also threw the 16th perfect game in UCLA history against Saint Peter’s on March 2 during a tournament in her hometown of San Diego. This is very impressive for someone whose collegiate journey began just a year ago. -Statistics courtesy of UCLA Bruins SoftballKerr will be paired with fellow pitchers juniors Whitney Baker and Megan Langenfeld. Bruins head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez commented, “Megan has great experience as either a starter or closer and has done well in the postseason too. Whitney has great tools and movement and is ready to make an impact in the circle in 2009.” With this determined group of girls, the 2009 season is looking very fruitful for the UCLA Bruins.

Fearsome Pick: Oklahoma Sooners, 15-3 overall (As of March 3, 2009) The athletes of the Oklahoma Sooners pose one of the largest threats to all of the NCAA teams out there this season, partly because their returning squad is one of the most experienced they have ever had. With the return of three All-Americans from the 2008 team, who rounded out a solid season with a record of 47-14 and ranked number 12, the preseason votes favor the Sooners very heavily. For the first time since 2000, it was unanimously agreed upon that the Sooners would be the most likely to take the Big 12 title. For 2009, the Sooners saw the return of two of their most accomplished hitters, among other things, senior Samantha Ricketts junior and Amber Flores. Each have already earned All-American honors with Ricketts achieving the honor in 2007 and Flores in 2008. The two combined for 97 of Oklahoma’s RBI and 123 hits in 2008. Flores led the team with a .381 batting average last season, while Ricketts was third with a .352 clip. With these two ladies returning to the spotlight, there is no doubt that we will see some very exciting action during the Sooner games this year. –Statistics courtesy of Oklahoma Sooners SoftballJoining Ricketts and Flores will be a powerful and promising lineup. A trio of incoming freshmen – all pitchers – will be key to Oklahoma’s success in 2009. Allee Allen and Kirsten Allen, along with Oklahoma product Samantha Bachman, will be called upon during the season. Head Coach Patty Gasso believes the performance of this group will directly relate to Oklahoma’s success. For 2009, it looks as if this experienced Sooners team will have a thing or two to teach the rest of the NCAA. Behind The Facepaint:

Brittany Black

Softball Today • FEB 2009

By Dave Utnik

14

HAYMARKET — It wasn’t so much the sun that Brittany Black was concerned about. The eye black she wore had nothing to do with reducing a late afternoon glare. Black just wanted to look intimidating. One smudge of dark grease on her angelic face wasn’t getting it done, so teammate Courtney Liddle leaned in close and swiped another big chunk down Black’s cheek. “We do it like all the college players do it and we smear it,’’ Black explained. “We think it’s so cool. It definitely gets us pumped up. We feel like we’re intense.’’ The biggest games require a more deliberate touch — and much more eye black. Not that the Battlefield senior really needs any help in the menacing department. She has a 60-plus mph rise ball, bright red contact lenses and a .800 slugging percentage to take care of that. Black has pre-game rituals like anyone else and some of them date back all the way to Little League and her first season of travel ball with the 10-andunder Vienna Stars. Back then, the big thing was stopping at 7Eleven for apple juice and HoHos. Now, it’s face paint

and sitting alone in the dugout on the afternoons when she’s pitching. “I feel so much more relaxed when I’m quiet,’’ Black said. “I’m a quiet person on game day because I’m always trying to get my head back into pitching or hitting. “I just like going out there and doing whatever and having fun unless it comes to softball. Then I’m really competitive.’’ Black is a cheerful, fun-loving teenager when she’s finishing off a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone or picking up a spare at Bowl America, but put a softball in her right hand and only one thing matters — winning. As a two-time all-star with the Gainesville Little League, Black realized at a young age that she belonged on the softball diamond. Even then, she could throw harder than most other girls. “I don’t know where the power came from, but that’s just the way it was,’’ she said. It’s not just her arm, either. Black’s bat has some thunder in it too. She uses the same swing at Battlefield that she learned seven years ago with the Stars — one predicated on bat speed, bent legs and relaxing. She hit .368 as a freshman in one of the state’s most competitive districts and has served as the Bobcats’ cleanup hitter in virtually every game since. As she begins her final high school season, the lefthanded hitting Black is still one of the state’s most imposing players. She went 12-1 with seven shutouts and a .046 ERA last spring, while batting .400 average and driving in 30 runs as Battlefield won a school record 25 games and reached the Group AAA state championship game in just their fourth varsity season. “She’s really had an impact offensively,’’ Bobcats coach Joe Schelzo said. When Black swings, most of the time she makes contact and that is a big reason the Bobcats captured the Northwest Region Tournament championship for the first time in 2008. “It feels nice knowing that we came together the way our coaches wanted us to,’’ Black said. “We had a lot more talent this year. We’ve all grown and matured.’’ At 18, the Austin Peay recruit already has plenty of big-game experience dating back to an ASA National Tournament appearance with the 10U Vienna Stars, a Pony National championship with the 12U

Shamrocks and a fourth-place finish at ASA Nationals with the 16U Shamrocks. “I think I really started to like softball so much when I started playing for the Shamrocks. It’s so different from Little League. It was a lot more fun going to different places and winning large trophies,’’ said Black, who made her first Shamrocks team in 2002 after following one of her friends, Langley’s Kelsey Green, to tryouts. It didn’t take long for Black to make an impact, either. In her second season with the 12U squad, the Shamrocks went 10-0 at the 2003 Pony National Tournament of Champions in Sterling. Now, as a member of the 16U squad that also features Battlefield teammate Kaitlyn Sileo, Osbourn’s Lori Botkin and Kaitlyn Barbour of Brentsville, Black has established herself as a high school ace and a Division I signee. Since bursting onto the scene as the Little League all-star who hit from the left side and threw from the right, Black has grown up to become an honor student and the News & Messenger All-Area player of the year. On the wall beside her bed hangs four prized certificates — one for each of the home runs Black hit during the 2005 Pony National tournament — and her name is also prominently featured in the Pony record book for the perfect game she threw during the 2004 season. “It feels like so long ago. I remember having it, but I don’t remember anything specific about it just because I’ve played so many games since then,’’ Black said. “It’s definitely a great achievement to have, just knowing that you’ve done it.’’ The perfect game occurred while Black was still attending Bull Run Middle School. Much has happened since then. For one thing, she’s given up volleyball — but not surfing the net or talking on her cell phone. She’s developed other interests as well. Two years ago, for example, Black joined the Robotics Club at Battlefield, but softball remains her true passion. As a young girl, she often dreamed about where the game might take her: To the Rising Stars Showcase in Florida, to the Independence Day Invitational in Boulder, Colorado and, one day, to Oklahoma City for the ASA Gold Nationals. Black also envisioned a day when she might help a fledging high school program compete for a berth in the Group AAA state tournament. “I couldn’t wait until I got to high school,’’ she said. “In every game we have to prove ourselves and prove something new and something different.’’ Exceptional

The house they were about to move into was still under construction, which was probably a good thing since Kaitlyn Barbour took one step into the unfinished basement and instantly came up with a revision to the floor plan. “There was this wide strip,” she explained. “And I said, ‘You know what this is perfect for?’” Since architects don’t always have the same vision as teenage softball players, a batting cage hadn’t been drawn up in the original design. That wasn’t a problem for Kaitlyn, who decided that she could probably construct one herself. “She bugged me until I ordered the net,’’ her father, Anthony, said. “And she helped me build it.’’ For nearly three years now, Kaitlyn has spent more time swinging a bat in her basement than she has hanging out in her bedroom. She’s smacked thousands of softballs into the protective net and, with the help of a personal trainer, has become the best hitter on a Brentsville High School squad that is preparing to defend its Northwestern District championship. “It’s the best idea we ever came up with,’’ Kaitlyn said. “I’d rather go down there any day and hit a bucket of balls than play X-box or Playstation2.’’ There are few things that rival Barbour’s desire to play softball. She is a gifted singer in Brentsville’s advanced chorus, a Youth For Tomorrow volunteer and is leaning toward a career in criminal justice. But softball ranks approximately

“a bajillion’’ times higher on her priority list. That isn’t likely to change anytime soon, particularly since she batted .432 out of the cleanup spot last spring and had already accepted a scholarship to play Division I softball at James Madison University. “I’m really proud of her. Some of that stuff didn’t come naturally to her,’’ Anthony said. “She’s worked hard away from the practice field.’’ Kaitlyn’s reputation is known well beyond the borders of the tiny Virginia town of Nokesville. The first summer she played organized softball as a member of the 10U Manassas Blaze, who captured the Babe Ruth state championship. The following year, she was part of an ASA state title team and Kaitlyn was just an eighth grader when she played on the 16U team that won the Babe Ruth World Series in 2005. “We knew when she came up here as a freshman she was going to do big things for us,’’ Brentsville coach Amy Beard said. Barbour’s main desire is to tear the cover off the ball with one swing. “She loves to hit. She probably loves that more

than anything,’’ Anthony said. “Her passion is hitting the ball.’’ Kaitlyn, who had a .878 slugging percentage and led the Tigers with 32 RBI as a junior, has played three different positions — starting at third as a freshman and at first last season before moving to catcher last spring — but her spot in the heart of the order rarely changes. There are two reasons for that: Beard likes her aggressive approach at the plate and, with every swing Barbour takes, there is the chance that she will hit a ball out of the park. “That’s the type of hitter she is,’’ Beard said. Barbour takes the same approach regardless of what team she is playing with. Last spring, she helped the Tigers finish with their best record since 1998 as they went 19-2 overall and reached the Group AA, Region II semifinals. “We count on her experience a lot. All the girls look to Kaitlyn and now that she’s moved into the catcher position she’s the field general,’’ Beard said. “She wants to be successful at every level of softball. She’s got her goals and they are set high, which they should be.’’

Softball is getting more competitive every year and players are always looking for new ways to get better and get an edge on their opponents. One of the ways players do so is by learning from elite players and coaches at various clinics around the country. These clinics often take place at local colleges. However, a different kind of clinic will take place in February 2010. For the first time ever, a softball clinic for fastpitch players, coaches, and their families will take place on a cruise ship! A few months ago, Reece Oslinker of

Smooth Sailing Cruises has decided to organize and put together a “floating” softball clinic designed for female players between the ages of 10 and 18 and their coaches. While cruising in the Caribbean, participants will have a chance to meet and learn from great softball minds like Olympic softball star Monica Abbott, Dave Peatkau, an internationally recognized hitting specialist and several additional coaches and specialists. A wide range of topics will be covered during the week including hitting, pitching, training, and recruiting. The cruise will leave Fort Lauderdale on February 13th, 2010 and will stop in the Bahamas, Key West, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman. Of course, in addition to the sessions, there will plenty of

Olympian Monica Abbott other family activities to make this a once in a lifetime experience. If you would like more information about the clinic, you can visit the clinic website at: http:// www.softballcruise.weebly.com

The H2 Hybrid’s exclusive design creates a lighter handle transition which means a longer barrel and bigger sweet spot. The H2 Hybrid builds off the success we had in baseball with Exogrid. It became baseball’s leading bat and the choice of the best hitters. The H2 Hybrid, with its industry leading ST+20 alloy barrel and 3-X composite handle, seamlessly provides the outstanding performance of a 1-piece stiff handle design. The move to a full 100 percent graphite composite design in the transition area, from handle to barrel, allows for a handle that’s extra stiff because graphite is lighter and stronger than aluminum. A stiff handle produces more barrel flex, resulting in maximum trampoline effect and, ultimately, outstanding performance. “The last thing you want at the moment of contact is for your bat handle to flex,” Sass said. “When the handle flexes, the barrel can’t. That reduces trampoline effect. The H2’s stiff handle produces maximum barrel flex for the power all fastpitch hitters seek.” And the barrel’s ST+20 alloy provides outstanding strength and toughness to produce the performance, feel, and sound that top fastpitch players demand.

Utilizing Easton’s patented Visual Composite Technology (VCT), the Synergy Reveal bat features a composite construction which includes a clear composite glass outer diameter that allows both players and officials to see the bat’s design lay-up. This visual technology is made possible by Easton’s Strained Energy Optimization patent. The benefit of VCT is that it allows Easton to design high-performance bats that protect the integrity of the game. When the design of the Synergy Reveal is compromised, the outer diameter of the bat will show delamination markings. Delaminations are breakdowns in the epoxy resin system that hold composite structure together. A delamination greater than 1” in any direction deems a bat illegal for play - as it signifies that the bat’s performance level exceeds association performance standards of 98 MPH. Bats without delaminations are legal for play and will provide great Synergy performance players have known for years.

Miccosuckee Redefines “Home Team”

42

Las Vegas, Nevada - Of all of the teams at the AthruZ Las Vegas Winter Spectacular, the Miccosukee Indian Gaming team may have taken the prize for the most unique. The team is made up of men, all of whom live on the Miccosukee Indian reservation in the Everglades, just outside of Miami. A woman, Doreen Osceola-Willie, who was one of the few women in competitive softball to coach a men’s team, also coaches them. Miccosukee didn’t go without adversity on the way to their Men’s D championship. They snuck past Canada’s Touchdown in the second game, 1614, and lost to Custom Truck of Nevada, 21-20, to set up an all-or-nothing championship game later that day against Custom Truck, which was unbeaten going into the final day. With the game on the line, Miccosukee rallied in the top of the seventh, but Custom Truck loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Miccosukee pitcher Danny Cares induced a ground ball to third base and Jose Valets saved the game to end the threat. Osceola-Willie said she didn’t doubt the outcome even though her team trailed entering the final inning. “I just told them I thought we would win,’’ she said. “We were confident we could pull out the victory and we went out and did it, but it was kind of scary at the end.’’ Miccosukee trailed by more than 10 in the championship game before the bats came out. It was the first major tournament-win in Las Vegas for Miccosukee, even though the coach had been trying for several years to go to more national events. Most of everyone on the team lives on the reservation, which is headquartered at the Miccosukee Reservation and Gaming Resort, about 18 miles west of the reservation. Most of the players are Native Americans and that, Osceola-Willie said, was a key part of the team’s success. “We stuck together because we are a family, all living close and seeing each other all the time,’’ she said. “It’s a great bunch of people and it was fun going to Las Vegas to just have some fun. Winning made it even more fun.’’ Cares pitched most games and never hid his combative attitude. “If someone ever went to the plate looking cocky, Danny always came up with the strikeout,’’

Osceola-Willie said. Kevin Best was his catcher. Jamie Garcia, Timothy Nolos, Louis Rivera and Jose Valest rounded out the infield, but depending on the situation, Osceola-Willie was never afraid to bring in a fifth infielder. “We study the other teams and go batter by batter,’’ Osceola-Willie said. “Whatever the situation is.” Our outfielders can track down fly balls if we move someone to the infield, but if we see a hitter who we know can go for the gaps, we go with the extra outfielder. All of our players are versatile and can play wherever we need them to play.’’ Shawn Cambreder, Paul Silipposn, Gabriel Caride and Nick Bland made up the outfield. It was the second major tournament win for Miccosukee, which won the 15A Nationals in 2007.

Men’s Class E Brick by Brick: Rebuilding Punishment The team that hangs together stays together. That’s the message Curtis Izard; leader of the Southern California Punishment that won the Men’s Slow Pitch E division at the AthruZ Las Vegas Winter Invitational, said was the key to his team’s easy win. The Punishment won all six of its games on the way to the title and was never seriously threatened. They dominated Canada’s Livin’ Large easily in the final two games and racked up 36 runs in the semifinals.

Izard said it’s because the team is constantly together on and off the field. It was their first season together but everyone, Izard said, had known each other for years, so building a new team, based in the Bakersfield, Calif. area, and was easy. “We know each other and we have hung with each other so long that it made sense to make a team out of it,’’ Izard said. “Since the first game we played together, we knew we had something special.’’ When it came to the semis, Livin’ Large was able to put 21 on the board and still never came close. Izard said that the Canadians weren’t feeling well and that they had just run out of steam by the time the finals rolled around and the Punishment meted out a 14-2 win. Izard said the key was building a new team this season, building from the ground up and working their way up through the Southern California ranks. Success was nothing new. Punishment finished fourth in the Western Worlds and it didn’t hurt that most of the team spends a lot of time having fun in nearby Las Vegas anyway.

Woman’s Class D Chicked Out Forces Oposition to Check Out If girls just want to have fun, Chicked Out had a blast winning the AthruZ USSSA Las Vegas Winter Spectacular Women’s D bracket. Chicked Out had home field advantage since they are based in Las Vegas, but they were hardly challenged on their way to the title,

control anyway. He said he had one “political coach,’’ a “phone calls’’ coach, a “batting order’’ coach and any others who wanted to volunteer for anything that came up. Izard turned over his head coaching position to Mike Valderinos this season and said he had no problem making the change after going out on top with the win in the Las Vegas tournament. The team expects to go back to Las Vegas in March for the Budweiser Extravaganza.

Izard has known most of his players for years and said he isn’t even aware of all of their full names. Everyone on the team has a nickname, and that’s how they are best identified. Uncle Lou is the pitcher and he throws to catcher Josh Grubbs, or sometimes to “Shaggy.’’ Chris Robertson (C-Rob) holds down first and his brother Josh Robertson (J-Rob) is at second. They are brothers who are about 6’-5”, range from 260 to 280 pounds and can hit the ball a mile. Victor Chavez is at short at Chris Reyes (C-Ray) mans third. It’s a tight infield that allows Izard to go with a 4-4 defense most of the time. In the outfield Dennis Cruz (D-Way), Guillermo Martin-DelCampo (G-Mo), John (Little Johnny Long), Mike Valderinos (MeHo) and Robert Kyle handle the outfield on a rotating basis. Keith Smith played utility all season. It was truly a team effort, including the decisions made from the top. Izard gave up the managing role this season, but said that he never wanted total

knocking out Lady G’s from New Mexico in the finals, 20-14. Chicked Out swept all six games in the tournament. Coach Jason Pasco said his team has fun on the field and even more off of the field. “These girls know how to have fun,’’ said Pasco, who is in his first year of coaching after a long playing career. “That brings them together and we can always find something fun to do in Vegas.’’ Chicked Out is a closely-knit team that had only four new players to blend in with the new coach this year. It didn’t take long for the rookies to mix with the veterans and by the time they entered the Las Vegas event, Pasco was feeling pretty good about his chances. The championship win, by six, over the Lady G’s was the closest game of the tournament. “Even the new people on this team knew everyone from softball for awhile,’’ Pasco said. “Our team knew how to have fun and also knew when it was time to concentrate, so it was a mix of hardcore softball and hardcore fun. We all agree on this team that this is serious to us, but if we go too hardcore, it doesn’t work. So we play hard, we practice hard, and we have fun.’’ The pitcher was Tammy Habig, who hadn’t played softball in about a year before the tournament since she was busy giving birth. Pasco said she didn’t miss a beat in her comeback. Chrissy Evans was catcher and the infield was rounded out by Lisa Doner, Brit Cannavino, Cami Marrott and Becky Lloyd. It was an infield that packed a punch. Evans finished the tournament with a .773 average and Lloyd led the team with a .773 average. The outfield also came through with Nancy Grove and Kelly Yurchick hitting over .700 while Veronica Villa made several assists from the outfield to go with several diving grabs. The players have been playing softball long before they ended up on Chicked Out. Pasco said almost all of them were college softball players and, to get to the elite level, the experience was important. “To get to this upper level, experience is important, along with having played together so long,’’ Pasco said. “This is a team that is going to stay together for a long time and we plan to be competitive not only in Las Vegas but anywhere we play. We are built to last and I can see us being competitive for a long time.’’ Chicked Out plans to play in the World’s at Walt Disney World in September, but it should be the same team that won the Las Vegas tournament on their home field. Whatever happens, Pasco said, the girls are going to have fun.
