Samsung Exploring New Possibilities for Developing its Own OS The giant company is successful with its Android line of smartphones and tablets. Speculations are on for Samsung to make its own smartphone OS to be independent and have complete control over its hardware and software. Samsung is a big name in the smartphone and tablet market. Its Galaxy S series of smartphones has been the biggest hit of all times and it gives a strong competition to iOS based phones. Samsung prominently makes use of Google’s most popular OS – Android and now the toughest question for Samsung to address is – whether it can make it big without Google’s Android. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam quite strongly mentioned in a meeting on Friday that Samsung should consider making its own operating system and stop relying on Android for its future success. More than 20 million units of Samsung’s Galaxy S III have been sold out till date, which clearly signifies Samsung’s strong hold on the smartphone industry. Samsung has had the taste of developing a mobile operating system with its ‘Bada’ OS and it functions successfully in certain parts of the world. But Samsung has received all the popularity with the Android platform. So, will it be equally successful if it designs its own full-fledged mobile OS. Another question to be addressed is - does Samsung need to think about making its own operating system. Apple has been exceptionally successful with its own operating system of iOS, while RIM was not so fortunate with its own version of OS. Samsung will definitely be more in control if it can smoothly manage the hardware and the software of its own smartphones. Samsung has all the resources required to come up with a powerful operating system and give a tough fight to Apple, Google and Microsoft. Samsung has designed an OS – Tizen in collaboration with Intel and it is considered to be compatible for all smartphones and laptops. It is not sure whether Samsung is intent on leveraging Tizen for all its upcoming products or is it contemplating of designing a new OS. Its recent patent problem with Apple is what is forcing the company to stay away from Android and focus on developing a unique operating system. McAdam called Samsung ‘a dark horse’ in the mobile market and also referred to Samsung as ‘a potential elephant in the room’. This portrays his faith in Samsung to be an independent brand and in its power to be the provider of world class smartphone and tablets. Provided the fact that Samsung can build its own working OS, it is necessary to know whether it can be as popular with its new OS as it is with the Android based smartphones and tablets. Android is a popular operating system and Samsung makes Android more interesting and lively. It is the combination of both

that gives Samsung the success and fame it enjoys today. Will Samsung risk its name and popularity for making its own OS is something that smartphone users will have to wait and watch to know.
