Soloists Carter Rowell, trumpet, Emma Tranum, French horn, and Ian Rigg, trombone Preparing Anthony Plog's little-known Triple Concerto has been an unusual challenge for conservatory musicians Carter Rowell, Emma Tranum, and Ian Rigg. They have not been able to find a full recording of the piece to guide them - in fact, this may be only the second time the work has been performed! "We really have to be creative and figure this out for ourselves," says Emma. All three are seniors at Olympia High School and believe their years of playing together have helped them tackle this demanding work. "We've played together in various different groups since 8th grade and I have gotten to know their playing extremely well," says Ian. "This is an incredibly important factor in playing a piece as difficult as the Plog is, because a large part of playing this kind of music is all about communication between me, Carter, and Emma." "We really know each other as musicians and work well together after so much time spent making music together," says Emma. "I think that as a whole is more important than any of our individual strengths." All three students have great respect for each

other's musicianship. "Ian and Emma have always been driven to master any piece of music put in front of them," says Carter. "I'm excited for the concerto to showcase Ian's excellent tone and Emma's proficiency in technical excerpts." Ian adds, "The greatest strength that both of my colleagues share is a wonderful sense of time and pulse as well a very sweet tone that makes it a pleasure to play this piece with them."
L-R: Emma, Carter, and Ian. They have a combined 18 years in SOGO. Carter plans to study biomedical engineering at University of Washington next year while continuing to play trumpet. Emma and Ian both plan to study music, with Emma at Central Washington University and Ian at Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

About the Music
Overture to The Magic Flute, K. 620 (1866) Triple Concerto (1995) By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
By Anthony Plog (1947-present)
Austrian child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent much of his youth on tour throughout Europe. He performed on keyboard and violin and played for European royalty. By the time he was eight years old, he had composed his first symphony, and at twelve he had composed his first opera.
Anthony Plog has had a rich and varied international career in music—as a composer of operas, symphonic music, and chamber works; as an orchestral musician, soloist, and recording artist; and as a brass teacher and coach at some of the great music conservatories internationally and now online to students around the world.
The Overture to The Magic Flute was completed two days before the premiere of the opera. Mozart conducted the premiere himself. Sadly he died only a few months later at age 35. The opera tells the fairy-tale story of a handsome prince who rescues a lovely princess from her sinister mother, the Queen of the Night. He is guided by a magic flute which protects him from many dangers on his journey.

The Triple Concerto for trumpet, horn, trombone and orchestra exploits many different textures both within the solo group and the orchestra itself. Each of the solo instruments is called upon at times to play as a soloist, and at other times as a chamber musician. In the first movement a calm and lyrical introduction begins the piece, only to be interrupted by energetic allegro. The third movement is again an allegro, and after a cadenza featuring the three soloists thematic material from the first movement is re-introduced, leading to a final coda. Nimrod from Enigma Variations, Op. 36 (1899) By Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Edward Elgar was from a small English village. He was an excellent violinist, played the bassoon, and worked as a church organist, but he had no formal training in composition. He is best known for Enigma Variations and for Pomp and Circumstance, a staple of high school graduations across the United States. Enigma Variations is comprised of 14 variations on an original theme. Each variation was inspired by an important person from Elgar’s life. Nimrod was for a friend who encouraged him in his composing career. It is frequently used by itself in England for funerals and memorial services.
About the Music
Finlandia (1900)
By Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) When composer Jean Sibelius was born in a small Finnish village, his country was under control of the Russian Empire. He wrote Finlandia in protest against the Russian occupation of his homeland. Finlandia begins with a strong motif in the brass. The turbulence in the piece represents the struggle of the Finnish people. Later the woodwinds introduce the Finlandia hymn motif. Then the tempo becomes faster, the brass fanfares return, and the piece rushes to its triumphant end. Sibelius’ works are so strongly associated with the struggle for Finnish identity that the Finnish 100 mark bill featured his image until the euro was adopted in 2002.

C
ameron May, can you give us a sneak peek into next year’s 20th anniversary season?
I’m going to stay pretty tight-lipped at the moment! But I can say that the Conservatory Orchestra didn’t play any French music this year, so we are going to remedy that on the November concert.
SOGO conductors Jennifer Marin, Greg Allison, and Cameron May
We also have a couple of anniversaries to celebrate (not least our own 20th!), and one of these falls very close to the date of our May concert.
I am very excited to celebrate our past, present, and future over the course of the 2019-2020 season, and I will see you all on the journey!
